Senator Ransom has been<lb />in public service for a long time,<lb />and richly deserves any honor<lb />that can be conferred upon him.<lb /><lb />Last year John Eckman. of<lb />Lawrence County, Pa., killed a<lb />couple of skunks and sold their<lb />hides for $2 each: He concluded<lb />that at that rate it wonld be a<lb />profitable business, says an ex-<lb />change, to raise the animals for<lb />their hides- He built an enclos-<lb />ure of some two acres, arranging<lb />it so that the animals could not<lb />burrow under the walls, and tiap-<lb />ped some thirty skunks to stock<lb />it. He now has 330, and expects<lb />next year to haye 3,000. The<lb />skunk breeds twice in the year<lb />and produces seven to nine at aT<lb />litter, so the rate of increase: is<lb />kept down by a habit the animals<lb />have of killing the first litter<lb />when the second one is born. Mr.<lb />Eckman feeds the animals with<lb />offal from the slaughter house,<lb />refuse meat and milk. He says<lb />that his pets are very tame and<lb />inoffensive, and never emit their<lb />characteristic. odor save when<lb />fightine.
