Scott<lb />GOVERNOR<lb /><lb />Greetings,<lb /><lb />It is my pleasure to welcome visitors to our state<lb />today who have come to see another of East Carolina University's<lb />outstanding athletic events.<lb /><lb />Intercollegiate athletics are an important part of our<lb />state's development. Some of North Carolina's most famous sons<lb />achieved their success on the gridiron.<lb /><lb />A fine example of this kind of athlete is Mike McGee,<lb />now the Head Football Coach at East Carolina University. Mike<lb />grew up in Elizabeth City, went to Duke University where he<lb />became an All-American, then became a fine professional player<lb />with the St. Louis Cardinals before entering the coaching field.<lb />His fame and that of others like him has reflected favorably on<lb />our state. Many people from all parts of the nation have come<lb />to North Carolina to see these athletes in action.<lb /><lb />More important, imtereollesiate alhbeties testers tie<lb />spirit of healthy competition. The dedication of these men you<lb />see play in Ficklen Stadium today provides a lesson for all of us<lb />because determination to reach a goal is the very life blood of<lb /><lb />our great country.<lb /><lb />Best wishes for another successful year of college<lb />football.<lb /><lb />Come back to North Carolina often.<lb /><lb />y<lb /><lb />obert W. <lb />The Pirates Club<lb /><lb />In line with the onew look? in football, East Carolina University has consolidated all of its<lb />athletic booster groups into one, cohesive organization " The Pirates Club. Its purpose is to<lb />raise funds, through contribution from the alumni, friends and students, to support the entire<lb />athletic program which includes 13 intercollegiate sports -- football, basketball, baseball,<lb />swimming, wrestling, tennis, outdoor and indoor track, cross country, soccer, golf, lacrosse<lb />and crew. The University needs substantial assistance from friends and alumni to develop a<lb />complete and wholesome program. The Pirates Club is a division of the ECU Education Found-<lb />ation, Inc. Accurate records are kept and audited annually. Funds are budgeted to each<lb />individual sport by the Athletic Director and Athletic Council. Basic membership is $100<lb />annually. However, there is no maximum or minimum that an individual may give in support<lb />of the program. Pirates Club contributions are tax deductible. Club members enjoy many<lb />benefits such as priority in season ticket purchases, special parking at home games, use of<lb />Century Building, complimentary brochures and a monthly newsletter [weekly during football<lb />and basketball seasons], theater-type seats in Ficklen Stadium and cushion seats in Minges<lb />and the satisfaction of a working relationship with an imaginative, growing major college<lb />athletic program.<lb /><lb />1970 BOARD OF DIRECTORS<lb /><lb />GREENVILLE: Dr. M.W. <lb />EAST CAROLINA """ TODAYS GAME ane Ve. way<lb /><lb />By JOHN MONTAGUE<lb /><lb />Director of Sports Information<lb /><lb />Given their first taste of victory, Coach Mike McGeeTs<lb />East Carolina Pirates want more.<lb /><lb />Strong West Virginia comes into Ficklen Stadium this<lb />afternoon and the Pirates, fresh from a 7"O upset of Fur-<lb />man last weekend, have their sights set on an even bigger<lb />upset against the Mountaineers.<lb /><lb />The Pirates snapped a 10"game losing streak with<lb />their thrilling victory in the rain at Furman last weekend.<lb /><lb />- Tailback Les Strayhorn plunged over from two yards out in<lb />the fourth quarter for the gameTs only touchdown. Then<lb />the ECU defense held off a dramatic Furman offensive in<lb />the final minute of the game, Pirate safety Mike Mills<lb />breaking up a fourth"down pass in the end zone to protect<lb />the 7"0 victory.<lb /><lb />Coach McGee had great praise for his defense in the<lb />game. Furman had been averaging over 200 yards per game<lb />rushing and the Pirates, led by tackle Rich Peeler and mid-<lb />dle linebacker Ralph Betesh, limited the Paladins to only<lb />73 yards on the ground. Furman, which saw a four-game<lb />winning streak and chances of a Southern Conference<lb />championship go down the drain, also managed only 85<lb />yards passing and a total of five first downs " none in the<lb />first half.<lb /><lb />The victory was ECUTs first of the year after seven de-<lb />feats. It also was the PiratesT first win since a 24"21 triumph<lb />over Furman on November 1, 1969. The Pirates seem to<lb />hold a jinx on the Paladins, having beaten them the last<lb />five years in a row.<lb /><lb />West Virginia presents a much bigger challenge. The<lb />Mountaineers of Coach Bobby Bowden are eager to rebound<lb />from a 42"8 loss to strong Penn State last Saturday. This<lb />loss dropped West VirginiaTs record to 5"3.<lb /><lb />oThey'll be the best team we'll see all season,? said<lb />ECU assistant Al Ferguson who scouted the West Virginia"<lb />Penn State game. oThey are much stronger than their record<lb />shows. Their middle linebacker (Dale Farley) is a real bear.<lb />HeTs 6-3 and weighs 242 and is a great one.<lb /><lb />oAnd those West Virginia running backs are out of<lb />sight,? continued Ferguson. oThey have so many good ones<lb />theyTre able to use Jim Braxton, one of the top rushers in<lb />the country last year, as a tight end much of the time.<lb /><lb />oAgainst Penn State their backs were slipping a lot<lb />because it was pouring rain and the West Virginia team was<lb />playing its first game of the season on natural grass and just<lb />werenTt used to it. Also, Penn State played a great game.?<lb /><lb />1970 Schedule<lb /><lb />(Results To Date)<lb /><lb />Sept., 12 at Toledo Lost 2-35<lb /><lb />Sept. 19 EAST TENNESSEE Lost 0-10<lb />[Parents Night |<lb /><lb />Sept. 26 at The Citadel Lost 0-31<lb /><lb />Oct. 3. at West Texas State Lost 30-42<lb /><lb />Oct. 10 at N.C. MARSHALL 2:00 p.m.<lb />[Legislature Day |<lb /><lb />Nov. 28 Davidson [at Norfolk] 1:30 p.m.<lb /><lb />The statistics show how strong the Mountaineer run-<lb />ning game can be. Halfback Bob Gresham has carried 91<lb />times for 641 yards (7.0 per carry) and seven TDs so far,<lb />while fullbacks Pete Wood and Ed Williams are not far be-<lb />hind. Wood has carried 107 times for 598 yards (5.6 average)<lb />and five TDs, Williams 98 times for 421 yards and five<lb />touchdowns also. Braxton, when heTs been used in the back-<lb />field, has responded with 291 yards in 40 carries " a super<lb />7.3 average.<lb /><lb />Quarterback Mike Sherwood, who owns practically<lb />every Mountaineer passing mark, has completed 70 of 114<lb />passes for 838 yards and six TDs. His two favorite targets<lb />have been split end Chris Potts, 24 grabs for 257 yards and<lb />one touchdown, and tight end Braxton, 17 catches for 351<lb />yards and five TDs.<lb /><lb />So the key West Virginia players to watch today are<lb />quarterback Sherwood (No. 14), running backs Gresham<lb />(No. 33), Wood (No. 40), and Williams (No. 42) and tight<lb />end Braxton (No. 44) on offense and middle linebacker<lb />Farley (No. 50) on defense.<lb /><lb />The Mountaineers came out of the Penn State game<lb />without any major injuries. However, the Pirates werenTt<lb />so fortunate. Added to the growing ECU casualty list were<lb />punter Tony Maglione (leg), linebacker Don Mollenhauer<lb />(leg) and linebacker Grover Truslow (arm). Both Maglione<lb />and Mollenhauer are questionable for todayTs game " which<lb />presents a real problem for the punting game since No. 2<lb />punter Gerald Wrenn already is lost for the season with a<lb />broken collarbone. This leaves the Pirates without an ex-<lb />perienced punter.<lb /><lb />Seven other Pirates are ailing " four of them like<lb />Wrenn are out for the season and a sixth definitely out of<lb />the West Virginia game. Those out for the year are line-<lb />backer Ron Konrady, offensive tackle Paul Haug, split end<lb />Tim Dameron and middle linebacker David Glosson. De-<lb />fensive end Ted Salmon has not dressed for the last two<lb />games and will again be sidelined today due to a foot<lb />injury.<lb /><lb />Also, defensive tackle Rich Peeler has a bad case of<lb />tonsilitis and center Jimmy Creech a bad ankle. Peeler was<lb /><lb />hospitalized Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week,<lb />but was released at 5 a.m. last Saturday, just in time to<lb />drive all the way down to Greenville, S.C., and play one of<lb />the best games of his career against Furman. How long<lb />Peeler, who is the heart of the ECU defense, can keep this<lb />up is unknown.<lb /><lb />oPeelerTs play against Furman was one of the most<lb />courageous ITve ever seen,? said McGee, oand also one of<lb />the best. Without Rich Peeler, our defense could very<lb />easily have fallen apart and we'd still be looking for that<lb />first win.?<lb /><lb />Getting the first victory of his head coaching career was<lb />a big thrill for McGee. But itTs no secret that beating West<lb />Virginia would be a bigger thrill. :<lb /><lb />oWe catch West Virginia at a good time,? said McGee.<lb />oThey played Penn State last week and have Syracuse the<lb />week after us. They'd better not be looking ahead to<lb />Syracuse, because I can promise you weTll be ready to play<lb />football this Saturday, no matter how many injuries we<lb />have.?<lb /><lb />Following todayTs battle with West Virginia, the Pirates<lb />have only two games left " against Marshall here next<lb />Saturday and against Davidson at Davidson on Nov. 28.<lb />The Davidson game, originally scheduled for Norfolk, Va.,<lb />was switched back to Davidson by the Wildcats because of<lb />a contract dispute.<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY<lb /><lb />Founded in 1907 as East Carolina Teachers Training<lb />School, ECU has grown from an enrollment of 123 in 1909 to<lb />9,997 in 1970. Students come from 97 different counties in<lb />North Carolina, 40 states and 15 foreign countries. Coeds out-<lb />number the male students 5,094 to 4,703.<lb /><lb />ECU leads the South in the preparation of teachers. In<lb />1920 the school was authorized to offer four-year teacher edu-<lb />cation degrees and to grant the bachelor of arts degree. A year<lb />later by an act of the General Assembly, the school name was<lb />changed to East Carolina Teachers College. The president at this<lb />time was Dr. Robert H. Wright, who headed East Carolina from<lb />the date of the first class in 1909 until his death in 1934. Under<lb />his leadership the school had grown to an enrollment of over<lb />1,000 and was now offering a masters of arts degree.<lb /><lb />During the period from 1934 to 1960 the school continued<lb />to grow, though not as spectacularly in terms of enrollment. A<lb />curriculum leading to a bachelor of science degree was authorized<lb />in 1941 as the college expanded to meet needs for occupations<lb />other than teaching. By 195lundergraduate majors were offered<lb />in 17 areas and graduate programs in 10 areas. It was in that<lb />year that an act of the General Assembly changed the name to<lb />East Carolina College.<lb /><lb />It was also during this period that intercollegiate athletics<lb />found a place in the East Carolina way of life. The first football<lb />team was fielded in 1932 under Coach Kenneth Beatty, though<lb />Pirate fans would just as soon forget that inaugural season since<lb />the team lost all five games and didnTt score a point.<lb /><lb />A major turning point for East Carolina came in 1960 when<lb />Dr. Leo W. Jenkins was inaugurated as the schoolTs sixth presi-<lb />dent. Under the guiding hand of this dynamic man, East Carolina<lb />College became East Carolina University [in 1967] and enroll-<lb />ment more than doubled in a 10-year period.<lb /><lb />Today undergraduate majors are offered in 26 fields and<lb />graduate programs in 21 areas. Besides the College of Arts and<lb />Sciences and the Graduate School, there are seven professional<lb />schools: Allied Health Professions, Art, Business, Education,<lb />Home Economics, Music and Nursing.<lb /><lb />12<lb /><lb />The face of the University is always changing. Twenty years<lb />ago there were 17 buildings on a 98-acre campus with a total<lb />physical plant value of $5 million. Today there are 52 buildings,<lb />300 acres and a valuation in excess of $44 million.<lb /><lb />The athletic complex alone takes up 79 acres. It consists of<lb />Minges Natatorium and Coliseum, Scales Field House, Ficklen<lb />Stadium, the Century Club Building, University Field, an all-<lb />weather track and all-weather tennis courts. Eleven intercollegiate<lb />sports have ECU varsity teams " football, basketball, baseball,<lb />cross country, soccer, wrestling, indoor track, swimming, golf,<lb />tennis, outdoor track, crew and lacrosse. The golf team plays on<lb />the Greenville Country Club course and the crew rows on the<lb />Tar River which flows through the middle of Greenville.<lb /><lb />Greenville itself is a town of 30,000, located approximately<lb />halfway between Raleigh [the state capital] and the Atlantic<lb />Ocean. The beautiful coastal plains of Eastern North Carolina<lb />represent some of the richest, unspoiled farming country you<lb />will find anywhere in the United States. Pitt County, of which<lb />Greenville is the county seat, leads the nation in the production<lb />of leaf tobacco. However, the presence of East Carolina Uni-<lb />versity has made Greenville something of a cosmopolitan cultural<lb />center in the heart of this agricultural area.<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />By SONNY LEA<lb /><lb />Sports Information Assistant<lb /><lb />Football for Wes Rothrock is not a game or a past-<lb />time, but a way of life.<lb /><lb />As long as the East Carolina University senior<lb />defensive end can remember he has had a football in his<lb />hands.<lb /><lb />The big reason for this was his father. He put a<lb />football in his young sonTs hands as soon as he was big<lb />enough to hold it and when Wes got to junior high he<lb />had his big chance to start playing.<lb /><lb />He couldnTt play in recreation leagues around his<lb />hometown because in Enfield (population around<lb />3,000), there just werenTt any.<lb /><lb />But, his father, H. W. (Skinny) Rothrock, didnTt<lb />let that worry him. He already had big dreams about<lb />Wes going on to play college football just like he had<lb />done some years before at Wake Forest.<lb /><lb />So, Wes started playing football in junior high and<lb />by the time he made it to high school he was pretty<lb />good. He was so good, in fact, he made All-Conference<lb /><lb />A Tale Of Two ee<lb /><lb />RATE<lb />LOSe-UP<lb /><lb />for three seasons and the Raleigh News &amp; ObserverTs<lb />All-East team as a running back his senior year.<lb /><lb />By his senior year, Rothrock was a household<lb />word around Enfield. Besides the fact that everybody<lb />knew everybody else in Enfield, high school hero Wes<lb />also had a younger brother named Sammy, who was<lb />just starting his football career at Enfield high.<lb /><lb />Wes was a halfback on both offense and defense<lb />during his first three years of high school ball. In his<lb />senior year he was given the nod at quarterback. He<lb />started the first game, but in the second contest a little<lb />skinny ninth-grader named Sammy Rothrock took the<lb />job away from him and kept it for the rest of the season.<lb /><lb />Wes didnTt mind. Sammy was his brother and he<lb />preferred playing halfback anyway. So with a backfield<lb />half composed of kids named Rothrock, Enfield went<lb />on to a 7-2 season, the best in some years in the small<lb /><lb />Eastern North Carolina town.<lb />(CONTINUED PAGE 16)<lb /><lb />15<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />A Tale Of Two Brothers<lb /><lb />(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 15)<lb /><lb />Wes came to East Carolina after a year at Hargrave<lb />Military Academy as a defensive halfback. When he<lb />arrived in Greenville, he was first tried at fullback in the<lb />Stasavich single-wing, but later found a home in the<lb />defensive hackfield.<lb /><lb />All this time, his brother Sammy was drawing all<lb />sorts of raves back home in Enfield, not as a quarter-<lb />back but as a halfback just like his older brother. He,<lb />too, made All-Conference for three seasons and the<lb />Raleigh News and ObserverTs All-East team his senior<lb />year.<lb /><lb />Several schools recruited Sammy, including ECU,<lb />but he finally decided on his fatherTs alma mater, Wake<lb />Forest. He fad a fair freshman season when he started<lb />at defensive cornerback for the Baby Deacons just as<lb />Wes had done for the Baby Pirates. But, in Wake<lb />ForestTs spring game this past April, the younger<lb />Rothrock reached the limelight when he returned a punt<lb />for a touchdown and intercepted two passes.<lb /><lb />As a sophomore, Sammy is playing a vital role in<lb />the DeaconsT hopes. Backing up both the safety and<lb />the cornerback posts, he intercepted a pass against<lb />Virginia Tech, but it was nullified because of a penalty.<lb />His parents were there watching Wake Forest roll over<lb />the Gobblers and after the game the whole family got<lb />together and went to Raleigh to watch Wes play against<lb />N.C. State,<lb /><lb />With all those relatives in the Carter Stadium<lb />stands, Wes knew he had to play well. And he did. He<lb />had his best game of the season against the Wolfpack--a<lb />game the Pirates lost 23-6.<lb /><lb />With both the Rothrocks playing major college<lb />football in the oBig Five?, Enfield has something to<lb />brag about. Not many high schools with an enrollment<lb />of only 150--with about 65 of that being boys--produce<lb />college football players but Enfield has two--and both<lb />have the same last name.<lb /><lb />Every Saturday afternoon this fall, Mr. and Mrs.<lb />Rothrock have been driving around North Carolina--<lb />either to Groves Stadium in Winston-Salem to watch<lb />Sammy or to Ficklen Stadium in Greenville to watch<lb />Wes:<lb /><lb />They are in the stands today watching Wes and<lb />the Pirates battle the Mountaineers because they have<lb />been watching their son play for 11 years now. This<lb />will be the last year they have a chance to watch both<lb />their sons play college ball. Wes will graduate this<lb />spring with a degree in physical education and with<lb />hopes of going on to take a high school coaching job.<lb /><lb />But, Wes will be back next season watching from<lb />the stands, something he hasnTt done since before junior<lb />high school. HeTll even have the chance to watch his<lb />little brother on the college gridiron.<lb /><lb />16<lb /><lb />Good Luck Pisates<lb /><lb />LUM S<lb /><lb />Featuring Food and Beverage<lb />for the<lb />Entire Family<lb /><lb />10TH and COTANCHE<lb />OPEN 24 HOURS<lb /><lb />WE ARE PROUD<lb />TO HAVE BEEN SELECTED<lb />TO PRINT THE FOOTBALL PROGRAMS<lb />FOR THE<lb />ECU FIGHTING PIRATES<lb /><lb />Go Big Purple<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb />Sv<lb /><lb />A 4<lb />qighorid oaivninc<lb /><lb />CORNER 9TH &amp; WASHINGTON STREETS<lb />GREENVILLE, N.C. / PHONE 752-7712<lb /><lb />J<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />Meet Mike McGee<lb /><lb />A New Era Of Purple Pride<lb /><lb />The entire East Carolina football program took on a<lb />youthful look last December with the hiring of 31-year-old<lb />Michael Burnette McGee to be the PiratesT 11th head foot-<lb />ball coach since 1932.<lb /><lb />This Elizabeth City native is already one of the most<lb />respected, most dynamic young coaches in college football<lb />today. Otto Graham, for one, is so impressed with McGee<lb />that he asked Mike to help coach the College All-Stars in<lb />their game against the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City<lb />Chiefs in Chicago this summer.<lb /><lb />Coaching the All-Stars in Soldiers Field was a nostalgic<lb />experience for McGee. For just 10 years ago he captained<lb />the 1960 Stars against the Baltimore Colts. Considered by<lb />many as the greatest Duke lineman of all time, McGee had<lb />capped a brilliant three-year career as a Blue Devil in the<lb />fall of 1959 by winning consensus first team All-America<lb />honors at offensive guard and receiving the Outland Trophy<lb />as the best college lineman in the United States.<lb /><lb />Today that Outland plaque hangs above the fire place<lb />in the McGee home in Brook Valley, a popular new sub-<lb />division of Greenville. Mike bought the home because he<lb />wants to feel settled in Greenville. Having been raised in<lb />Eastern North Carolina, he loves this part of the state. He<lb />also believes in East Carolina University and its future as a<lb />major power in college football. He is dedicated to this<lb />goal, but he knows it wonTt be reached overnight.<lb /><lb />McGee didnTt become the capable football coach he<lb />is overnight, either.<lb /><lb />Following his graduation from Duke in 1960 with a<lb />B.A. in business administration, Mike played three seasons<lb />for the St. Louis Cardinals in the NFL. His rookie season<lb />[1960] he was voted the CardinalTs most valuable rookie<lb />and finished third in NFL voting for Rookie of the Year.<lb />Unfortunately, a neck injury cut short MikeTs very prom-<lb />ising pro career in 1962.<lb /><lb />McGee returned to his alma mater in 1963, joining<lb />Bill MurrayTs staff as offensive line coach. At the same<lb />time he enrolled in graduate school at the University of<lb />North Carolina and received his Masters in education in<lb />1965.<lb /><lb />After working under Murray for three seasons [1963-<lb />65], McGee moved to the University of Wisconsin where he<lb />coached the offensive line under Head Coach Milt Bruhn in<lb />1966. The following season Murray Warmath convinced<lb />Mike to come to the University of Minnesota. So Mike<lb />spent the next three years in Minneapolis, coaching the<lb />GophersT offensive line. In 1967 Minnesota won the Big<lb />Ten title.<lb /><lb />Under these three men " Murray, Bruhn and Warmath<lb />" McGee gained experience that will be invaluable to him as<lb />a head coach. With these seven years of preparation under<lb />his belt, not to mention 10 years of playing at Elizabeth<lb />City High, Duke and in the NFL, Mike was ready last<lb />December when ECU reached out to pick him as the<lb />successor to Clarence Stasavich.<lb /><lb />Building the Pirates into a big winner is a challenge<lb />for Mike McGee. But this man thrives on challenges. Being<lb />successful is largely a matter of pride, says McGee. At East<lb />Carolina McGee calls it oPurple Pride.?<lb /><lb />18<lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>FOOTBALL'S AMAZING MAJORS FAMILY<lb /><lb />by TOM SILER, Sports Editor, Knoxville News-Sentinel<lb /><lb />The Majors football story began<lb />30 years ago. It still goes on and on,<lb />chapter after chapter, sequel added<lb />to sequel.<lb /><lb />Father Shirley Majors started it<lb />all in 1941. And he still coaches,<lb />turning out distinguished teams at<lb />the University of the South (Se-<lb />wanee).<lb /><lb />John, eldest of five sons and now<lb />head coach at Iowa State, was a<lb />great All-America runner at Ten-<lb />nessee in 1956. Bobby, the youngest<lb />son, now a junior at Tennessee, also<lb />is a dazzling runner, safetyman and<lb />punter.<lb /><lb />It all began because the father, Shir-<lb />ley, married to the former Elizabeth<lb />Bobo, detested farming.<lb /><lb />He had a opiece of ground,? as<lb />he puts it, in Middle Tennessee, not<lb />far from Nashville, but he hated to<lb />farm. He loved football. Shirley, a<lb />taciturn fellow who likes to hunt<lb />quail and rabbits and chew tobacco,<lb />didnTt even have a college degree,<lb />but he got a chance to coach in 1941.<lb />He grabbed it.<lb /><lb />Just One Loss<lb /><lb />He coached at Franklin County<lb />High and at Lynchburg. Huntland<lb />(population 258) lured him away in<lb />1949, by which time Johnny was<lb />ready to ramble with a football.<lb />Johnny scored an incredible 564<lb />points while he played for his fa-<lb />ther, going on to the University of<lb />Tennessee in 1953. Huntland went<lb />on winning, losing one game in six<lb />years.<lb /><lb />There was always a Majors in<lb />the lineup. Joe played next for his<lb />father, then Bill. Just to break the<lb />omonotony? there was a daughter,<lb />too " pretty Shirley Ann, and, as<lb />rou might guess, she was a cheer<lb />eader and later married a football<lb />layer. Larry starred for his father,<lb /><lb />00, but Bobby, the one now at Ten-<lb /><lb />nessee, did not. He came along too<lb />late.<lb /><lb />In 1957, Sewanee hired Shir-<lb />ley Majors. Sewanee gives no ath-<lb />letic aid, has lofty academic levels,<lb />and stresses classical studies as a<lb />sort of prep for the Episcopalian<lb />ministry. But Shirley cracked the<lb />whip and won with the players<lb />available. He had an undefeated<lb />team his second year there, now has<lb />a 13-year record of 66-34-5.<lb /><lb />John led Tennessee to an undefeat-<lb />ed season in 1956 and the No. 2 rank-<lb />ing in the nation. He finished second in<lb />the Heisman Trophy voting and ranks<lb />as one of the brilliant single wing tail-<lb />backs of all time.<lb /><lb />Brother Joe shunned Tennessee,<lb />figuring he was too slow for the<lb />single wing. He tried Alabama, then<lb />transferred to Florida State. His<lb />greatest thrill there was in quarter-<lb />backing his team to a 10-0 victory<lb />over Tennessee in 1958. HeTs now a<lb />lawyer in Tullahoma, Tenn.<lb /><lb />Bill Vs. Joe<lb /><lb />Bill enrolled at Tennessee in 1957,<lb />playing against Brother Joe in that<lb />big upset a year later. Bill was a<lb />great defensive player and single-<lb />wing tailback, finishing in 1960. UT<lb />hired him as a coach. He lost his<lb />life along with two other coaches in<lb />1965 when their car was hit by a<lb />train at a grade crossing in subur-<lb />ban Knoxville.<lb /><lb />Larry, considerably smaller than<lb />John, Joe or Bill, played for his fa-<lb />ther at Sewanee, helping to defeat<lb />Washington and Lee, Hampden-<lb />Sydney, Millsaps and such. He went<lb /><lb />_ into coaching, too, and has produced<lb /><lb />fine teams for high schools in East<lb />Tennessee.<lb /><lb />Bobby, the baby of the family and<lb />the largest as a college player, rolled<lb />up fantastic feats in high school in<lb />football, basketball, baseball and<lb /><lb />25<lb /><lb />SHIRLEY MAJORS<lb /><lb />golf. He finished up at Castle<lb />Heights Military Academy in 1967,<lb />and followed John and Bill to Ten-<lb />nessee the next fall.<lb /><lb />As a 195-pound sophomore, Bob-<lb />by was used as a flanker back and<lb />punt returner. He is not particular-<lb />ly fast but he has a deceptive gait<lb />that leaves tacklers reaching. This<lb />fall heTll return punts again, do the<lb />punting and play the all-important<lb />safety position on defense.<lb /><lb />Saturday is always an exciting day<lb />to the Majors family. No one can rest<lb />until he gets the news on ShirleyTs<lb />Sewanee team, on how Bobby and the<lb />Tennessee Vols did and how JohnnyTs<lb />Iowa State team came out.<lb /><lb />The Majors thrill to every vic-<lb />tory and suffer in every defeat, and<lb />itTll be that way until their unique<lb />story ends"which is likely to be a<lb />long way off.<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />A BIG DAY FOR STAS<lb /><lb />To East Carolina University Athletic Director Clarence<lb />Stasavich, December 4, 1970, will be one of the most<lb />memorable days of his career.<lb /><lb />On that day in Charlotte, three North Carolinians are<lb />to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.<lb />oStas? will be one of them.<lb /><lb />At a time when records are being set and considered<lb />so important to schools, it should perk up the feathers on<lb />the PiratesT parrot to know that oStas? has set a first?T for<lb />East Carolina University. He will be the first from ECU to<lb />be inducted into the stateTs Hall of Fame.<lb /><lb />ItTs not unusual for outstanding athletes to turn to<lb />coaching after their playing years are over. oStasTT was no<lb />exception, but the success he has enjoyed in the coaching<lb />ranks separates him from the crowd.<lb /><lb />oStas? first came to Greenville in 1962, as the PiratesT<lb />head football coach. A year later he assumed the dual role<lb />of athletic director and football coach. Last December he<lb />relinquished his football duties to devote full time to the<lb />ever-expanding job of directing an athletic program at a<lb />major university.<lb /><lb />A virtual legend in his own time in the western part<lb />of the state, Stasavich built a small college football power-<lb />house at Lenoir Rhyne in Hickory, where he coached from<lb />1946 to 1961. His Lenoir Rhyne teams won nine Carolinas<lb />Conference titles and in 1960 claimed the National Associ-<lb />ation of Intercollegiate Athletics national title.<lb /><lb />His string of successes continued when he came east<lb />to Greenville in 1962. Three of his East Carolina teams in<lb />succession posted 9-1 records and won bowl games [1963-<lb />64-65]. In the second year his Pirates were members of the<lb />Southern Conference [1966], ECU shared the conference<lb />title. His overall record at East Carolina was 50-25-1. His<lb />eight years as head coach marked the most successful period<lb />in the schoolTs 38-year gridiron history.<lb /><lb />When you add this record at East Carolina to his<lb />Lenoir Rhyne accomplishments, you come up with a re-<lb />markable lifetime record of 170 wins, 64 losses and 8 ties<lb />as a college head coach. At the time he retired last Decem-<lb />ber, there were only two other active coaches with more<lb />victories than Stasavich " Paul [Bear] Bryant of Alabama<lb />and Johnny Vaught of Ole Miss.<lb /><lb />A member of the Helms Hall of Fame, Stasavich has<lb />been honored as National Coach of the Year twice [1959<lb />and 1964] and District Coach of the Year five times.<lb /><lb />Born February 9, 1913 at Georgetown, Ill., Stasavich<lb />graduated from Georgetown Township High School in 1931.<lb />In September of that year he came to North Carolina for<lb />the first time - as an undergraduate at Lenoir Rhyne. He<lb />earned an A.B. degree in science there in 1935 and added<lb />his M.A. at the University of North Carolina in 1946. He<lb />was on the Honor Roll as a senior at Lenoir Rhyne and was<lb />named to the Mu Sigma Epsilon honor society.<lb /><lb />38B<lb /><lb />In addition to distinguishing himself as a student,<lb />Stasavich blazed the trail of glory on the athletic field,<lb />playing four years of football, four years of basketball, two<lb />years of tennis and one year of baseball for Lenoir Rhyne.<lb />An offensive end, fullback and defensive tackle in his foot-<lb />ball career, oStas? won All-Conference honors three years.<lb />He achieved the same distinction as a basketball player.<lb />Twice, in 1934 and 1935, he was named to the Charlotte<lb />ObserverTs Flaming Five, an annual recognition of the top<lb />five all-around athletes in North and South Carolina.<lb /><lb />His first venture into coaching came in 1935 at<lb />Campbell College in Buies Creek where he was football line<lb />coach, head basketball coach and assistant baseball coach.<lb />After three years at Campbell, oStas? returned to his alma<lb />mater in 1938 as football line coach, assistant basketball<lb />coach and head tennis coach. His tennis teams won two<lb />conference championships.<lb /><lb />World War II interrupted his coaching career in 1942.<lb />Stasavich entered the U.S. Navy and served with distinction<lb />in the European, Mediterranean and Pacific theaters as an<lb />LST commander.<lb /><lb />After discharge from the service in 1946, he returned<lb />to Lenoir Rhyne " this time as head football coach and<lb />athletic director. It didnTt take long for oStas? to build his<lb />reputation as a winner. In 16 years as head coach at the<lb />Hickory School, Stasavich compiled a spectacular 120-37-7<lb />record and won conference championships in 1951-52-55-<lb />56-57-58-59-60-61. Today he still looks back on the 1960<lb />National Championship as his obiggest thrill in coaching.?<lb /><lb />The single wing was StasavichTs offense. In 1969 he<lb />was the last remaining advocate of this exciting formation<lb />in the major college ranks. He has authored numerous<lb />articles on football in general and the single wing in par-<lb />ticular.<lb /><lb />oStas? is married to the former Helen Warlick of<lb />Hickory and they are the parents of three grown children "<lb />Rebecca Ann, Mary Helen and Walter Lewis.<lb /><lb /></p>

<lb />THE VIKING<lb />BLOOD BANK | en.<lb /><lb />one<lb /><lb />Among the regular contributors to the Viking Blood Bank have been the three football Hall of<lb />Famers shown above: Seated left to right"Elroy (Crazylegs) Hirsch, now WisconsinTs Athletic<lb />director; Al Wistert, former Michigan star and Paul Schwegler, the VikingsT Chief. Standing are<lb />Dick Winslow, accordion entertainer, and Mrs. Mike Carson, a nurse.<lb /><lb />Meet the man who has given away<lb />more than 10,000 pints of blood. He<lb />personally has contributed no less than<lb />62 pints, or close to eight gallons of his<lb />own. His name is Paul Schwegler. Four<lb />decades ago he was an All-America<lb />tackle at the University of Washing-<lb />ton. In 1968, he was inducted into the<lb />National Football Hall of Fame.<lb /><lb />Meet also some of the 220 football-<lb />oriented men who twice each year, if<lb />they are in Los Angeles, donate a pint<lb />of their blood to help those in dire<lb />need. Virile men all, most of them have<lb />a prominent football past, though some<lb />are standouts of other sports.<lb /><lb />Over all, the personable, booming<lb />Schwegler, who has a heart THIS big,<lb />constantly stands as the prodding chief<lb />and cheerleader. When he grabs a fel-<lb />lowTs lapels or buttonholes him, things<lb />happen. What has emerged is perhaps<lb />the most unique life-saving fraternity<lb />of its kind extant"The Viking Blood<lb />Bank.<lb /><lb />It is quite a story, something differ-<lb />ent, something fine, something inspira-<lb />tional. It also is something that tugs at<lb /><lb />you, and makes one glad to know such<lb />considerate and unselfish people are<lb />around.<lb /><lb />The story was born in 1951. Schweg-<lb />ler, now a sales executive at 20th Cen-<lb />tury-Fox, was determined to help a<lb />friend in need, Robert Welch. Welch,<lb />who had produced NBCTs oThe Com-<lb />edy Hour? television show, was suffer-<lb />ing from a bleeding ulcer. Blood trans-<lb />fusions were desperately needed. Re-<lb />sponding to SchweglerTs hurried calls<lb />were 10 football pals. Over a period of<lb />months, no less than 124 pints of blood<lb />were donated for Welch. It kept him<lb />alive"for ten more years, in fact.<lb /><lb />A Call for More Blood<lb /><lb />So the story started. Now, 10,000<lb />pints later, who can tell where this<lb />selfless giving to the less fortunate will<lb />end? Spurred by the stimulating moti-<lb />vation of the Welch case, Schwegler<lb />moved on a much wider scale. First he<lb />was heeding a rising call for more<lb />blood which emanated mostly from<lb />friends of the original donors. Then the<lb />pleas from far and wide mounted as<lb />the Welch story spread.<lb /><lb />44<lb /><lb />Schwegler had but one course"get<lb />more blood and get additional men,<lb />particularly former football players, to<lb />participate.<lb /><lb />He went to Ken Hansen, the owner<lb />of Scandia, a Los Angeles restaurant.<lb />It was there that the 10 original con-<lb />tributors had met at noon on Mondays,<lb />prior to visiting the blood bank. They<lb />were part of a frolicsome group, called<lb />The Vikings, which lunched monthly<lb />on the day the restaurant was normally<lb />closed. Their Chief was Schwegler.<lb /><lb />oLook, Ken,T Schwegler said, othis<lb />group has been meeting at Scandia for<lb />some time before going down to the<lb />Red Cross headquarters. Why canTt we<lb />give our blood right here? CanTt we<lb />bring a mobile unit to the restaurant,<lb />have our usual lunch, and make a kind<lb />of party of it??<lb /><lb />oPll not only go along,? Hansen<lb />quickly responded, oITll do more. Ill<lb />provide the lunch and the libation for<lb />everyone who comes and gives a pint<lb />of blood.?<lb /><lb />500 Pints Annually<lb /><lb />The Red Cross was agreeable if 100<lb />pints could be guaranteed. That was no<lb />problem whatever. The program is now<lb />in its 19th year. The Vikings hold their<lb />blood-giving get-together twice each<lb />year, in the spring and in the fall. They<lb />eplaye to) Seandias capaciaya | sulat<lb />means 220 donors at a time, served by<lb />two mobile units. What with other con-<lb />tributions between times, the total<lb />bank odeposits? come to around 500<lb />annually.<lb /><lb />Two Red Cross units are set up in<lb />ScandiaTs main dining room. In atten-<lb />dance are one physician and 20 nurses.<lb />It is a compelling sight.<lb /><lb />Besides Schwegler, past football lu-<lb />minaries who have contributed their<lb />blood include Dixie Howell, Aaron Ro-<lb />senberg, Crazylegs Hirsch, Les Hor-<lb />vath, Al Wistert, Les Richter, Buck<lb />Compton, Bob De Lauer, Tom Fears,<lb />Mac Speedie, Sam Tsagalakis, Doyle<lb />Nave, Leon Clarke, Jack Pardee, Dick<lb />Hoerner, Ray Frankowski, Ernie Pinc-<lb />kert, Nick Pappas, Ernie Smith, Gus<lb />Shaver, Hobbs Adams, Nate Barrager,<lb />George Murphy (the ex-USC star, not<lb />the United States Senator) and Jack<lb />Banta.<lb /><lb />Van Johnson of movie fame once<lb />called upon Schwegler for blood for<lb />Elsie Janis and was a regular donor<lb />thereafter. Other contributors are<lb />Evelle Younger, Los Angeles County<lb />District Attorney, Peter Pitchess, the<lb />county Sheriff, and Attorney Paul Ca-<lb />ruso.<lb /><lb />Thanks largely to eight pints of Vi-<lb />king blood, Keith Higgins is alive and<lb />living a normal life today. In 1957,<lb />when eight years old, Higgins under-<lb />went the first open-heart surgery ever<lb />performed anywhere, at the USC<lb />School of Medicine.<lb /><lb />Besides the hundreds of recipients in<lb />Southern California, patients from<lb />such distant points as Anchorage, Alas-<lb />ka; Portland, Maine; and Miami, Flor-<lb />ida, as well as cities in between, have<lb />benefited.<lb /><lb />Hail to the Chief, not the President<lb />in this case, but to the Chief and the<lb />men of the Viking Blood Bank.<lb /></p>

<lb />Noting The Players<lb /><lb />PIRATES OFFENSIVELY<lb /><lb />Lots of changes in the offensive line last week against<lb />Furman. Guard Mike Kopp replaced John Hollingsworth<lb />at one tackle spot and tight end Bob Hileman moved over<lb />to the other tackle spot, replacing Tim Tyler, who switched<lb />to defense. Sophomore David Callahan took KoppTs start-<lb />ing position (the first start ever for Callahan) and tight end<lb />was taken care of by Tony Maglione, who moved over<lb />from the defense for the first time to rotate with Bill<lb />Croisetiere. The only positions that remained unchanged<lb />in the front six were one guard spot (Steve Davis) and<lb />center (Mark Pohren). Kopp did a tremendous job at his<lb />new position. The Pirates ran primarily to the left side with<lb />Kopp and Davis doing the blocking over there. . .ECU ran<lb />59 times against Furman (a season high) and passed only<lb />17 times (a season low). The real workhorse was fullback<lb />Billy Wallace, who carried 34 times for 127 yards. Tail-<lb />backs George Whitley and Les Strayhorn also ran well,<lb />though not as often. Strayhorn gained some valuable yards<lb />and scored the gameTs only TD in his best performance<lb />since his debut against Toledo in the season opener. He<lb />hurt his ankle against East Tennessee and had been way<lb />off from then until last Saturday. . .Flanker Dick Corrada<lb />wrote his name into the ECU record books two more times<lb />when he caught four passes for 35 yards against the<lb />Paladins. The four grabs gives him a career total of 76"a<lb />new school record, topping by two the 74 by Dave<lb />Bumgarner. The 35 yards gives Corrada 453 this season as<lb />a pass receiver, topping the old ECU single season mark of<lb />450, also set by Bumgarner. Corrada still needs 176 yards<lb />to break the career record for pass receiving yardage "<lb />1,023 yards by Bumgarner. . Punter and tight end<lb />Maglione may miss West Virginia game due to leg injury he<lb />suffered against Furman. This would leave punting up to<lb />either Earl Clary or Jack Patterson, since No. 2 punter<lb />Gerald Wrenn is already out for season with broken<lb />collarbone. Also hurt " tackle Paul Haug and split end<lb />Tim Dameron, both through for season.<lb /><lb />WEST VIRGINIA OFFENSIVELY<lb /><lb />Like Furman, West Virginia likes to run 70 per cent of<lb />the time. However, Mountaineers are bigger, stronger and<lb />faster than Furman and can pass more effectively when<lb />they have to. Top rushers are halfback Bob Gresham (91<lb />carries for 641 yards and 7 TDs), fullbacks Pete Wood (107<lb />carries for 598 yards and 5 TDs) and Ed Williams (98<lb />carries for 421 yards and 5 TDs) and halfback Jim Braxton<lb />(40 carries for 291 yards and one TD). Braxton lines up<lb />more often as a tight end than a running back. 170 of his<lb />yards came in one game " against Colorado State. . .Quarter-<lb />back Mike Sherwood (hit 70 of 114 passes for 838 yards<lb />and 6 TDs) holds almost every WVA passing record. He<lb />needs only two more TD tosses for career record 27.<lb />Favorite targets are Chris Potts (24 catches for 257 yards<lb />and one TD) and Braxton (17 grabs for 351 yards and 5<lb />TDs). . .Gresham, incidentally, needs 211 yards for career<lb />rushing record. He was held to 18 by Penn State last week<lb />when Mountaineers were bothered by wet field " their<lb />first outing on natural grass this season. Tackle George<lb />Boyd will miss his fourth straight game due to an injury.<lb />Other than that, WVA is in fine shape.<lb /><lb />PIRATES DEFENSIVELY<lb /><lb />Shutout win over Furman was PiratesT first white-<lb />washing since a 17-0 conquest of Furman in third contest<lb />of 1966 season. . .ECU defense is riddled with injuries, yet<lb />still managed to play great game against Paladins. Furman<lb />had been averaging over 200 yards per game rushing and<lb />got only 73 on ground against Pirates. . .Pirates rank first<lb />in Southern Conference in team defense, allowing 290.9<lb />yards in total offense per game. Surprisingly, Pirates trail<lb />opponents in total offense by less than 200 yards ~ ECU<lb />has 2,133 yards gained to opponentsT 2,327. . .Tackle Rich<lb />Peeler and middle linebacker Ralph Betesh were standouts<lb />against Furman. Peeler had been in infirmary with acute<lb />tonsilitis since Wednesday, but got out at 5 a.m. Saturday<lb />and drove all the way to Greenville, S.C., for the game,<lb />arriving just two hours before the kickoff. He. was weak,<lb />yet still played a super game. HeTs ECUTs leading candidate<lb />for All-SC honors. Linebackers Grover Truslow and Don<lb />Mollenhauer joined the injury list against Furman, but may<lb />play against West Virginia. Definitely out against the<lb />Mountaineers are end Ted Salmon, middle linebacker David<lb />Glosson and cornerback Gerald Wrenn. The latter two are<lb />out for season as is linebacker Ron Konrady, who was hurt<lb />on first play of season and will never play football again.<lb /><lb />Head Coach Mike McGee goes over game plan with quarterback<lb />John Casazza.<lb /><lb />WEST VIRGINIA DEFENSIVELY<lb /><lb />Middle linebacker Dale Farley (6-3, 242) is one of best<lb />in nation. HeTs back near full strength after a mid-season<lb />injury. Last year Mountaineers had All-American middle<lb />guard in Carl Crennel. . .West Virginia has been extremely<lb />tough to pass against this season, yielding 3 TDs passing<lb />and 17 rushing.<lb /><lb />53<lb /><lb /></p>

He was drafted by the Los<lb />Angeles Rams, but entered the Marines shortly after-<lb />ward, and was named to the All-Sea team. He later<lb />played in 1958 with the Rams, and presently is in the<lb />carpet business in Greensboro. He is married to the<lb />former Sue Lanier of Beaulahville, and they have four<lb />sons. Following<lb />his graduation, he was signed by the Baltimore Colts, but went into the Air Force before<lb />playing any pro ball. His single game passing record of<lb />231 yards was only recently broken, and he still<lb />holds the EC mark of four TD passes in a single game,<lb />and 16 in a season. He was a starter all three years of<lb />his EC career, which was cut short by illness in his<lb />senior year. It seeks to reconstruct the past, to<lb />understand the present, to glimpse and help create the future.<lb />The UniversityTs concerns embrace the breadth of life. . .plants<lb />and animals, manTs health, his polluted environment, his pros-<lb />perity, his comfort, his humanity.<lb /><lb />The more than 20,000 students that WVU serves each year<lb />are young and old. . from every West Virginia county and in<lb />East Africa (where the University conducts a federally funded<lb />agricultural education program). They are coal miners and<lb />industrial workers receiving technical training, company engineers<lb />keeping up with the newest technology, 18 to 21 year olds<lb />discovering the excitement of new ideas, tomorrowTs doctors<lb />and engineers, teachers continuing their education, firemen,<lb />housewives learning about art and how to become wiser con-<lb />sumers.<lb /><lb />WVUTs organization into 17 colleges, schools and divisions<lb />indicates the variety of its intellectual life: The College of<lb />Agricultural and Foresty, College of Arts and Sciences, Center for<lb />Appalachian Studies and Development, College of Commerce,<lb />Creative Arts Center, School of Dentistry, College of Engineering,<lb />Graduate School, College of Human Resources and Educatien,<lb />School of Journalism, College of Law, School of Medicine,<lb />Divisions of Military Science and Air Force Aerospace Studies,<lb />School of Mines, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy,<lb />School of Physical Education.<lb /><lb />The most significant development in WVUTs recent history<lb />has been its emergence as a regional center for graduate and<lb />professional education. For the first time in its history, WVU<lb />awarded more than 1,000 graduate degrees at its 101st Com-<lb />mencement on May 17, 1970.
