        <p>Healthcare Reformed<lb /><lb />ned Into Law !<lb /><lb />Barack Obama speaks to. the<lb />nation following the final vote<lb />in the House of Representa-<lb />tives for comprehensive '<lb /><lb />healthcare<lb /><lb />Sunday Ts vote in the House of<lb />Representatives is huge for<lb />Barack Obama. He found his<lb />voice on healthcare " after the<lb />Special election _in<lb />Massachusetts took away his<lb /><lb />filibuster-proof Senate. He<lb />took an issue that seemed<lb /><lb />dead, a party in disarray, and .<lb /><lb />-an administration on the<lb />defensive and rallied them.<lb /><lb />President Obama has managed<lb />something. that eluded<lb />Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy,<lb />Nixon, Carter, Clinton, and<lb />both Bush Sr and Bush Jr.<lb />Winning national health<lb />insurance " even this weak<lb />version " will be his legacy.<lb />And it restores his reputation<lb />as an effective and eloquent<lb />force. Even more impoftant,<lb />_he avoids a loss that would<lb />have diminished his star to the<lb />vanishing point. Lose this and<lb />he becomes Jimmy Carter, Win<lb />it-and he does what even the<lb />greats could not do.<lb /><lb />And here Ts something people<lb />are missing: this was the<lb />Democrat's signature issue. It<lb />has been since 1945 (when<lb />FDR designed a reform and<lb />left it as a legacy to Truman<lb />who made it the cause of his<lb />life). When was the last time a<lb />Democratic president rallied<lb /><lb />his party on one of their issues "<lb /><lb />and overcame fierce<lb />Republican opposition? Bill<lb />Clinton (1993-2001) did not<lb />manage it once; he won<lb /><lb />essentially Republican issues "<lb /><lb />budget balance, Nafta, welfare<lb />reform. Jimmy Carter (1977-<lb />81)? No, again. To find.a<lb />Democrat winning a contested<lb /> -ylietory on a Demoeratic i: issue<lb />you have to go back to Lyndon<lb />Johnson before the 1966<lb />midterm. Forget the politics<lb />for a moment, On the<lb />substance, I Td consider this the<lb />biggest Democratic victory in<lb />45 years.<lb />And the midterm test that<lb />everyone is focused on now is<lb />shortsighted. Lyndon Johnson<lb />changed America with the Civil<lb />Rights Act (1964) and<lb />Medicare (1965). No<lb />Democrat and few<lb />Republicans would mess with<lb />those laws. Lyndon Johnson<lb />usually ranks as a near great<lb />president - and without<lb />Vietnam he'd rank even higher.<lb />But he got buried in the 1966<lb />" midterm election, For pele<lb />with an eye to history, the<lb />midterm test is not a reliable<lb />one.<lb />Is the health reform good for<lb />Republicans? No, They already<lb />have the anti- ovata<lb />_ erowd sewed up, Before the<lb />vote they could make two<lb /><lb />arguments: |. Democrats can Tt<lb /><lb />get anything done; 2. And what<lb />they want to do is bad " too<lb />much government. Now, they<lb />lose the oDemocrats are<lb />ineffectual ? argument. As to the<lb />second argument, the Dems<lb />havea chance to prove them<lb />wrong with an _ actual<lb />programme.<lb /><lb />But there Ts one final point that<lb />no one should miss. The politics<lb />continues, Democrats have a<lb />chance to reframe this debate<lb />and take their momentum on to<lb />other issues. Republicans will<lb />try to keep portraying<lb />Democrats as wild and out of<lb />control. But look at how zany<lb />the politics have been. The<lb />Republicans dominated that<lb />debate for a year. Then, crazily,<lb />they won a long-shot special<lb />election " and promptly lost<lb />control of the debate. Nothing<lb />became Obama so much as his<lb />response to a stinging defeat.<lb />What's next? Here Ts the<lb />irresistible conclusion: expect<lb />the unexpected.<lb /><lb />lhe Minority Voice<lb /><lb />Newspaper<lb /><lb />Founder/Publisher<lb /><lb />Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />editor<lb />Stephen Johnson<lb /><lb />Contributing Writers<lb />seatrice Maye<lb /><lb />Photos<lb />Jim Rouse / Reggie Price<lb />405 Evans St,<lb />Greenville NC<lb />office 252.757.0365<lb />mvoicenews'<lb /><lb />vahoo.com<lb /><lb />Oprah Winfrey<lb />Settles Ex-<lb />Headmistress T<lb />Defamation Case<lb />By The Associated Press ?<lb /><lb />PHILADELPHIA (AP) "<lb />Oprah Winfrey has settled a<lb />defamation lawsuit filed by a<lb />headmistress she had accused of<lb />performing poorly at her South<lb />African girls school, where<lb />some students claimed they<lb /><lb />were abused, lawyers said<lb />Tuesday, The lawsuit by former<lb /><lb />headmistress = Nomvuyo -<lb /><lb />.Mzamane claimed Winfrey<lb />defamed her in remarks made<lb /><lb />in the wake of the 2007 sex-<lb />abuse scandal at the school,<lb />Mzamane said she had trouble<lb />finding a job after Winfrey<lb />stated she had olost confidence ?<lb />in her and was ocleaning house.<lb />from top to bottom. ? <lb />Page 5 March 2010<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice newspaper r would like t. to run a retraction for the story<lb /><lb />printed in the February 2010 edition<lb /><lb />incident in<lb /><lb />_ by Stephen Johnson editor<lb /><lb />On Feb.6, 2010 between the "<lb /><lb />hours of 7:00 - 8:00 PM. Mr.<lb />Jenkins and his wife were rest-<lb />ing in their bedroom, when they<lb />heard beating at the side door of<lb />their home. Convinced that some-<lb />one was trying to break into their<lb />home they called 911 and re-<lb />quested that someone come out.<lb />According to Mr. Jenkins after he<lb />informed the 911 operator of his<lb />location she immediately began<lb />asking him if he had a gun. Mr.<lb />Jenkins informed the operator<lb />_ that yes he did in fact own a gun.<lb />She also asked if he had been<lb />outside or knew if the person was<lb />White or Black."He responded o<lb />No, Ihave not gone outside , ?<lb />Flustered with what he thought<lb />appeared to be pointless ques-<lb /><lb />tions Mr. Jenkins again requested -<lb /><lb />that someone come out and hung<lb />up the phone. A short time later<lb />Craven County Sheriff Dept.<lb />pulled up and the beating outside<lb />suddenly stopped. Mr. Jenkins<lb />states. oI can Tt believed what hap-<lb />pened next. After answering the<lb />door the sheriffs just walked into<lb />my home without any introduc-<lb />tion or invitation and again asked<lb />me if] had any guns! ?<lb /><lb /> oyes ?, He responded oI am a 79<lb />year old Veteran and I have a<lb />right to have a gun in my own<lb /><lb />Opening for an<lb />Office . He says the Sheriff stated<lb /><lb />that he was going to take his gun<lb />and grabbed at the barrel of it<lb /><lb />while Mr. Jenkins was still hold-<lb />ing on to it. At this point they be-<lb />gan to struggle for the weapon<lb />while the Sheriff Ts partner simply<lb />stood in the doorway laughing at<lb />the situation. The altercation went<lb />on for a few minutes longer until<lb />the officer grab T held of Mr.<lb />Jenkins neck Mr. Jenkins. states<lb /> oHe grabbed held of the gun with<lb />one hand and the back of my neck<lb />with other twisting and turning my<lb />body in an attempt to get me to<lb />release the gun. ?<lb /><lb />Mr. Jenkins T wife had seen all she<lb />could take as she screamed out ,<lb /><lb /> oLet go of thy-sick husband! ? She<lb />_ ran toward the two men and be-<lb /><lb />gan to struggle with them as well<lb />to get possession of the gun. A few<lb />seconds had past and she manage<lb /><lb />to get hold of the gun and.quickly |<lb /><lb />left the room with it. Tired, ex-<lb />hausted and possibly a little<lb />frighten Mr. Jenkins tells the of-<lb />ficer that he should not be treat-<lb />ing him like this, that he is 79 years<lb />old and very ill . According to Mr.<lb />Jenkins the officer simply re-<lb /><lb />of the Minority Voice newspaper the<lb />question allegedly occurred by the Craven County Sheriff Dept.<lb /><lb />sponded that he did not care.<lb />The other Sheriff who had<lb />been standing in the doorway<lb />watching the events unfold<lb />finally asked if Mr. Jenkins<lb />needed an ambulance and<lb />told the Ist Sfficer T to wait<lb />in ig Car.<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice newspa-<lb />per was unable to contact<lb /><lb />anyone from the Craven<lb /><lb />county Sheriff Dept. for<lb /><lb />comment . We asked-if the<lb />original complaint regarding<lb />the break-in had been inves-<lb />tigated or if the officers in-<lb />volved had been repri-<lb /><lb />manded for their actions. .<lb /><lb />According to our sotfrces<lb />neither have taken place. The<lb /><lb />following day the Jenkins<lb /><lb />Chief Bundy to ask why the<lb /><lb />_ Sheriffs had come into his<lb />home and attacked him as<lb /><lb />they did. He in formed us<lb />that he was told that the De-<lb /><lb />partment would take of any _<lb />- medical injuries resulting<lb /><lb />from the incident and that in-<lb />cident would be taken care<lb />of.<lb /><lb />According to sources of The<lb />Minority Voice newspaper<lb />as described this incident<lb />does not follow any typical<lb /><lb />procedures when trying to -<lb /><lb />secure a gun in a person resi-<lb />dence. In addition, we were<lb /><lb /> informed that any officer<lb /><lb />must be invited into a home<lb />without a prior warrant be-<lb />ing issued. The Jenkins are<lb />still very frightened and con-<lb />cerned for their safety. They<lb />are even hesitant to call the<lb /><lb />- Sheriff Dept. in case of fu-<lb /><lb />ture break-ins.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, the Jenkins<lb />family is no stranger to<lb />trouble i. Living in<lb />Vanceboro for over 79 years,<lb /><lb />a town with a long history ¢<lb /><lb />of racial tension Mr. Jenkins<lb />has seen his fair share of rac-<lb />ist behavior by local law en-<lb /><lb /> forcement . He recalls Like<lb /><lb />many African-Americans<lb />growing up in the segregated<lb />South, he has learned to ac-<lb />cept many things and walk<lb />away from many others. At<lb />one time the Jenkins Family<lb /><lb />lived Om one of the largest<lb /><lb />picture of what perseverance<lb />and hard work can accomplish.<lb />It is Mr. Jenkins belief that all<lb />these attacks that he and his<lb />family have endured over the<lb />years stems from one thing , to<lb />get him to sell his property, a<lb />long time+request from other<lb />local farmers.<lb /><lb />shortly after harvest. He has awoken<lb />to the sight of several burning crosses<lb />in his front yard even as recent as 1982.<lb />His home has been shot upon count-<lb />less times while racial slurs rang out<lb />- from the car. Unbelievably, in all these<lb />cases no charges were ever filed. The<lb />Jenkins remained silent they are a liv-<lb />ing example of Black History a true.<lb /><lb />farms in Vanceboro, a place where he still<lb />resides.
