          <lb />_October Issue 2009<lb /><lb />Images of 56 murdered<lb />youth spark calls to end<lb />senseless violence<lb /><lb />By NAYABA ARINDE<lb />Amsterdam News Editor<lb /><lb />This, week Ts AmNews front<lb />page is meant to be jarring. And<lb />heart-wrenching. Does it make<lb />you catch your breath? It is<lb />supposed to. oNinety-nine<lb />percent of those people on the<lb />poster are from South Jamaica<lb /><lb />Queens. The only ones who<lb /><lb />aren't are Biggie from Bed-<lb />Stuy and Tupac {claimed<lb />somewhat by Brooklyn], and I<lb />knew all of them, T T said activist<lb />Erica Ford, CEO and founder<lb />of Life Camp: Inc. oMost of<lb />these children were victims of<lb />_ gun violence, and the age range<lb />is 3 to 25. ? These children were<lb />the victims of drive-bys,<lb />targeted hits and stray bullets.<lb /> oAll of itis senseless violence, ?<lb />said Ford. oThese people are<lb />the reason why I am doing<lb /><lb />what I am doing now. Their<lb />deaths moved me. This youth<lb />violence has made me dedicate<lb />my life to building 4 better<lb />future for the children. That was<lb />why I formed Life Camp, which<lb />is a community-based nonprofit<lb />organization that wants to<lb />provide young people with the<lb />means, resources, tools, hope<lb />and. vision to make the right<lb />choices and develop social skills<lb /><lb />to navigate problems and.<lb /><lb />obstacles that they may face.<lb /> oUnless and until we address. the<lb />undiagnosed depression in.our<lb />community, we will continue to<lb />see acts of yiolence, ? said Terrie<lb />Williams, founder of the Stay<lb />Strong Foundation and author<lb />of oBlack Pain "It Just Looks<lb />Like We're Not Hurting. ? oThe<lb />answer is clear, ? continued the<lb />Healing Starts With Us: mental<lb />health advocate, obut no one is<lb />understanding the reason for the<lb />violence, Every time I hear of<lb />these horrors, I also hear people<lb />asking, What's wrong with<lb /><lb />Greenville Ts Hair Show<lb /><lb />these kids? T They are a<lb />reflection of us. We as adults<lb />are. separate from our own<lb />pain and are not getting help,<lb />and we pass it on directly to<lb />our children. oAll of us,<lb />through learned silence, learn<lb />to absorb. shock and never<lb />speak of it. And so we self-<lb />medicate through violence,<lb />through drugs,.alcohol,<lb />work, anything to not sit with<lb />the pain. We act out, we lash<lb />out. We' want to blame the<lb /> okids, but the answer is us: We<lb />all need help. ?
