But to<lb />seniors, especially with their<lb />health care costs, it is a big<lb />deal. ? Cost of living<lb />adjustments are pegged to<lb />inflation, which has been<lb />negative this year, largely<lb />because energy prices are<lb />below 2008 levels. Advocates<lb />say older people still face<lb />higher prices because they<lb />spend a disproportionate<lb />amount of their income on<lb />health care, where costs rise<lb />faster than inflation. Many also<lb />have suffered from declining<lb />home values and shrinking<lb />stock portfolios just as they are<lb />relying on those assets for<lb /><lb />income. oFor many elderly, they<lb />don Tt feel that inflation is low<lb />because their expenses are still<lb />going up, ? said David Certner,<lb />legislative policy director for<lb /><lb /> AARP. oAnyone who has<lb /><lb />savings and investments has<lb /><lb />seen some serious losses. ? -<lb /><lb />About 50. million retired and<lb />disabled Americans receive<lb />Social Security benefits. They note<lb />that recipients got a big increase<lb />in January " after energy prices<lb />had started to fall. <lb />Ts ¢ African American Depression<lb /><lb />Obams spoke to Wal Street<lb />today about the need to<lb />carefully guard the apparent<lb />economic recovery, ordering<lb />financial titans to act with<lb />integrity as the recession<lb />slowly dwindles away. But The<lb />New York Times is painting a<lb />much different economic<lb />picture for African Americans.<lb />For blacks in large numbers,<lb />we are not coming out of a<lb />recession we . are<lb />experiencing a depression that<lb />germinated nine years ago, In<lb />addition to that; we are being<lb /><lb />mci<lb /><lb />blamed by disgruntled whites<lb /><lb />for their increasing economic<lb />misery. From The Times:<lb />When you're going down, as<lb />the white middle class has been<lb />doing for several years now,<lb />it Ts all too easy to imagine that.<lb />it Ts because someone else is<lb />| __ climbing up. Over your back.<lb /><lb />- Women.and The Sex Industry<lb /><lb />the:<lb />_ » disproportignately high levels of<lb />foreclosures and unemployment.<lb /><lb />Despite the sense of white<lb /><lb />grievance, though, blacks are the<lb />ones who are taking the brunt of<lb /> orecession, with<lb /><lb />And they weren Tt doing so well<lb /><lb />* to begin with. At the Start of the<lb /><lb />recession, 33 percent of the black<lb />middle class was already in<lb />danger of falling to a lower<lb /><lb /> oeconomic level, according to a<lb /><lb />study by the Institute on Assets<lb />and Social Policy at Brandeis<lb />University and Demos, a<lb />nonpartisan public policy<lb />research organization. In fact,<lb />you could say Tthat for African-<lb /><lb />wrenching article about a terrible<lb />side effect of the economic<lb />downturn. Apparently, more<lb />women are turning to sex work<lb />to make ends meet, because jobs<lb />that pay decent wages are so<lb />scarce. And the Internet makes<lb />it easier than ever for women<lb />with no experience in this<lb />secretive industry to get started.<lb />Your image of who turns to<lb />prostitution may be shattered by<lb />this piece, in which you will meet<lb />characters who could be your<lb />sister, cousin, neighbor... Or<lb /><lb />even your wife: oTake 55-year-<lb /><lb />old Jennifer of the Bronx, N.Y.<lb />who was laid off from her<lb /><lb />Americans the recession is over, //247Ci4! bookkeeping job... Her<lb /><lb />It occurred from 2000 to 2007,<lb /><lb />as black employment decreased<lb />by 2.4 percent and incomes<lb />declined by 2.9 percent. During<lb />those seven years,-one-third of<lb />black children lived in poverty,<lb />and black unemployment - even<lb />among college graduates -<lb />consistently ran at about twice the<lb />level of white. unemployment.<lb />That was the black recession.<lb /><lb />What Ts happening now is more<lb />like a depression..<lb /><lb />Due To The Recession<lb /><lb />husband, a subcontractor, also<lb />got the boot five months ago. He<lb />managed to find a part-time gig<lb />but, despite three decades of<lb />work experience in her field,<lb /><lb />Jennifer hasn't been able to land<lb /><lb />anything. Meanwhile, bills have<lb /><lb />piled up and they Tre six months<lb />behind on their mortgage; that Ts<lb />why Jennifer started turning<lb />tricks on Craigslist. ? The<lb />collapse of the economy is<lb />making these types of choices<lb />inevitable for many women<lb /><lb />_ despite years. of education and " |.<lb /><lb />professional expertise. I have<lb />seen talk of this phenomenon on<lb />message boards as well: Women<lb />turning to strip-clubs and other<lb />venues that they would normally<lb /><lb />-hever consider because things<lb />_ ate that bad out there.
