        <p>Minority Voice Sept 1, -Sept 12, 2008 pg8<lb />NATIONAL<lb />NEWS<lb /><lb />Portion of Slave Burial<lb />Ground Saved<lb /><lb />Special to the NNPA from the<lb />Richmond Free Press<lb /><lb />RICHMOND (NNPA) - A<lb />portion of a 250-yearold<lb />burial ground for slaves and<lb />freed Blacks that now lies<lb />beneath a parking Jot will be<lb />preserved and recognized as<lb />part of the city Ts effort to<lb />confront its slave-trading<lb />history.<lb /><lb />The 50-by-100-foot section of<lb />the former  oBurial Ground for<lb />Negroes ? had been destined<lb />to continue as a parking lot<lb />under the ownership of<lb />Virginia Commonwealth<lb />University,<lb /><lb />However, VCU, which earlier<lb />this summer faced protests<lb />over its failure to recognize<lb />the burial ground, has<lb />changed its mind.<lb /><lb />VCU last week announced an<lb />agreement with the Richmond<lb />Slave Trail Commission to<lb />preserve that section of its<lb />parking lot for a future<lb />memorial and quit parking<lb />cars in that section.<lb /><lb />The university has blocked off<lb />the portion of the parking lot<lb />identified with the burial<lb />ground, but is parking cars on<lb />the rest of the acre-property at<lb />1554 E. Broad St, that it<lb />bought earlier this year, No<lb />timetable has been given for<lb />development of the memorial.<lb />The commission is taking<lb />charge of that effort,<lb /><lb />Council Vice President<lb />Delores.L. McQuinn, who<lb />chairs the commission,<lb />praised VCU for its<lb />cooperation, She said she<lb />plans to hold at least three<lb />public hearings during the fall<lb />to gain citizen views on<lb /> ocreating a fitting memorial<lb />for this sacred ground. ?<lb /><lb />The city-created panel is<lb />developing a series of historic<lb />stops to illustrate Richmond Ts<lb />robust role in the slave trade<lb />and this would be one.<lb />Between 1808 and 1865, the<lb />city was the sécond largest<lb />slave auction site in the<lb /><lb />nation. The burial ground lies -<lb />just north of the former site of<lb />Lumpkin Ts Slave Jail, which<lb /><lb />is part of the trail and where<lb />the commission is ,<lb />undertaking an archaeological<lb />dig,<lb /><lb />Before the Civil War, the jail,<lb />dubbed the Devil's Half-Acre,<lb />was the largest holding pen<lb />for slaves. After the war,<lb />Lumpkin Ts becamie the initial<lb />site for a school for newly<lb />freed slaves that eventually<lb />became Virginia Union :<lb />University. The site lies south<lb />of Broad Street near 15th<lb />street, ,<lb /><lb />Kathleen S. Kilpatrick,<lb />director of the state<lb />Department of Historic<lb />Resources, which has played<lb />a key role in identifying the<lb />burial ground Ts location, said,<lb /> oWe now have a commitment<lb />that will help the |<lb />community, ..do what is right<lb />by those people who lie  T<lb />nearby, ?<lb /><lb />The burial ground was used<lb />from around 1750 to around<lb />1812, after Which the city<lb />approved a new cemetery for<lb />Black Richmond residents<lb />further north. According to<lb />the state history agency,<lb />Interstate 95 was built over<lb />the main portion of the burial<lb />grounds<lb /><lb /></p>
