THE<lb />EDITOR.<lb /><lb />Why support Obama?<lb /><lb />Are Blacks willing to<lb />mortgage their future just<lb />because a Black man is<lb />running for president? We<lb />may be, but we don Tt know it.<lb />Senator Barack Obama was<lb />an unknown commodity<lb />before he won the Senate race<lb />in Illinois against disgtaced<lb />incumbent Senator Peter G.<lb />Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald pulled<lb />out of the race because of a<lb />sex scandal. Alan Keyes, the<lb />carpet bagger from Maryland,<lb />moved to Illinois to replace<lb />Fitzgerald. Obama beat<lb />Keyes. This was a huge<lb />victory for Barack, if you<lb />believe Keyes ever posed any<lb />kind of real challenge.<lb /><lb />It has been said that, 90<lb />percent of what we achieve is<lb />through just showing up for<lb />an event. But when the rubber<lb />meets the road, how do we fill<lb />the 10 percent gap? No doubt<lb />that Obama is an eloquent<lb />speaker. But more than<lb />speeches will be required to<lb />lead America into the future.<lb />On the othe hand, there are<lb />lessons to be learned from<lb />Obama. We should follow his<lb />lead and play ball, even if we<lb />don Tt have the skills, Maybe<lb />we will get lucky and get an<lb />NBA Contract.<lb /><lb />Overall, 80 percent of Blacks<lb />support Obama, even though<lb />he has proven to be a light-<lb />weight on a number of key<lb />issues: civil rights, ideals, and<lb />substance. When it comes to.<lb />civil rights, Obama proved<lb />himself to be either inept or<lb />unwilling to appropriately<lb />address issues like the Jena<lb />Six case. Civil rights are the<lb />biggest issue facing Black<lb />Americans, All of our'tights<lb />flow through the Civil Rights<lb />Act of 1964: education, jobs,<lb />and housing. I believe<lb />although times have changed<lb />women still deal with how to<lb />stay true to the call of God on<lb />their life and still remain<lb />humble. Deborah did a good<lb />job juggling this unusual task<lb />the Lord gave her. She showed<lb />great leadership skills to help<lb />achieve the desire of the Lord<lb />by helping, delegating and<lb />participating in a very<lb />important assignment, let Ts take<lb />a look at a Remarkable<lb />Women. She yourself as.a<lb />Remarkable Women for the<lb />Glory of God!!!<lb />Deborah describes herself as oa<lb />mother in Israel ?. We have<lb />become so used to that term<lb />being used to describe someone<lb />of outstanding care and<lb />pastoral concern that we can<lb />easily forget that it is first and "<lb />foremost a statement of facts,<lb />Deborah was a wife and a<lb />mother. In that sense, she<lb />stands in the line of Ehud and<lb />Shamgar, among the most<lb />unlikely of candidates for God<lb />to select. But in another sense,<lb />she was an obvious choice<lb />because of the gifts of wisdom,<lb />judgment and pastoral direction<lb />which she was already<lb />exercising to the great benefit<lb />of God Ts people (4:4-5), She<lb />was serving as mother to the<lb />whole nation at a time when<lb />male leadership was<lb />conspicuous by its absence.<lb />She took the needs of the _<lb /><lb />le to heart, watched over<lb />ti. wnt se things out.<lb />for their best interests. This<lb />was not a role Deborah applied "<lb /><lb />for; it was an assignment the<lb />+ Lord would present to her, She<lb /><lb /> otribes of Isr sought her help.<lb /><lb />was a prophetess. In other<lb /><lb />_ words, God had marked her out<lb /><lb />for a special task by giving her<lb />this gift of his grace; through<lb />which she was able both to<lb />receive and to pass on his word<lb />of truth to his people. So, when<lb /><lb />' Deborah sent for Barak 4:6 it<lb /><lb />was not because she had just<lb /><lb />thought up a bright idea of a<lb /><lb />_ new and clever strategic .<lb />initiative, but because she had<lb /><lb />- feceived a command from God.<lb />_ This is how she regularly<lb /><lb />operated as judge in Israel: she<lb />was a channel of divine<lb /><lb /> revelation, the leader specially<lb /><lb />raised up by God for this time.<lb /><lb />_ She didn Tt wear a badge; she<lb /><lb />didn Tt carry a diploma or even<lb />announced herself as possessing<lb /><lb />it, but just because people were<lb /><lb />so consistently and regularly *<lb />helped by her ministry. That is<lb />the way a gift has to be tested<lb />and proved. She was the first<lb /><lb />_ women and only women<lb />_ Tevealed as having exercised<lb /><lb />civil authority in Israel, at God Ts<lb />direction. There are many<lb />modern day Deborah Ts who have<lb />to really push pass a lot of<lb />doubters and haters to achieve<lb /><lb />_theit God assignment. Although<lb /><lb />times have changed I Tm sure she<lb />had to deal with jealousy and<lb /><lb />many who didn Tt understanding -<lb /><lb />the call and assignment on her<lb /><lb /> life. What I really admire about F<lb /><lb />her is she understood that there<lb />was a job to be done and the<lb />Lord wanted to use her to get it<lb />done. :<lb /><lb />developed over time and<lb />struggles, it comes from a<lb />strength that woman are wired<lb />with. She was an awesome<lb />leader; her leadership gifts<lb />commanded the respect of both<lb />men and women, even though<lb />few women in her day rose fo<lb />leadership positions. Times<lb />have changed and we become<lb />leaders whether we like it or not.<lb /><lb />ne<lb />tof the<lb /><lb />Let Ts take a look at what any<lb />leader even Deborah must go<lb />through. Summarized by one<lb />word R-e-p-e-c-t, a<lb />Respect yourself and those with<lb />whom you work.<lb /><lb />Gaining the respect of other<lb />always begins with respecting<lb />yourself and your associates;<lb />Deborah did this, and people<lb />from all over Israel came to her<lb />to settle their disputes.<lb /><lb />Exceed the expectations of<lb />others<lb /><lb />Few observers might have<lb />expected Deborah to change the<lb />way the Israelites lived. Yet she<lb />raised the standard of living for<lb /><lb /> the common person and returned T<lb />the nation to peace.
