so far. They will lead you on

are values that make us better
people and will carry us a long
way. They are not materialistic
- but spiritual values that shape
us as Christians and humans.

what you do with those things.

Why support Obama?
Are Blacks willing to
mortgage their future just
because a Black man is
running for president? We
may be, but we don Tt know it.
Senator Barack Obama was
an unknown commodity
before he won the Senate race
in Illinois against disgtaced
incumbent Senator Peter G.
Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald pulled
out of the race because of a
sex scandal. Alan Keyes, the
carpet bagger from Maryland,
moved to Illinois to replace
Fitzgerald. Obama beat
Keyes. This was a huge
victory for Barack, if you
believe Keyes ever posed any
kind of real challenge.
It has been said that, 90
percent of what we achieve is
through just showing up for
an event. But when the rubber
meets the road, how do we fill
the 10 percent gap? No doubt
that Obama is an eloquent
speaker. But more than
speeches will be required to
lead America into the future.
On the othe hand, there are
lessons to be learned from
Obama. We should follow his
lead and play ball, even if we
don Tt have the skills, Maybe
we will get lucky and get an
NBA Contract.
Overall, 80 percent of Blacks
support Obama, even though
he has proven to be a light-
weight on a number of key
issues: civil rights, ideals, and
substance. When it comes to.
civil rights, Obama proved
himself to be either inept or
unwilling to appropriately
address issues like the Jena
Six case. Civil rights are the
biggest issue facing Black
Americans, All of our'tights
flow through the Civil Rights
Act of 1964: education, jobs,
and housing. Obama Ts record

we afford to vote for-a person

Remarkable Women for the
Glory of God!!!
Deborah describes herself as oa
mother in Israel ?. We have
become so used to that term
being used to describe someone
of outstanding care and
pastoral concern that we can
easily forget that it is first and "
foremost a statement of facts,
Deborah was a wife and a
mother. In that sense, she
stands in the line of Ehud and
Shamgar, among the most
unlikely of candidates for God
to select. But in another sense,
she was an obvious choice
because of the gifts of wisdom,
judgment and pastoral direction
which she was already
exercising to the great benefit
of God Ts people (4:4-5), She
was serving as mother to the
whole nation at a time when
male leadership was
conspicuous by its absence.
She took the needs of the _

it, but just because people were
so consistently and regularly *
helped by her ministry. That is
the way a gift has to be tested
and proved. She was the first
_ women and only women
_ Tevealed as having exercised
civil authority in Israel, at God Ts
direction. There are many
modern day Deborah Ts who have
to really push pass a lot of
doubters and haters to achieve
_theit God assignment. Although
times have changed I Tm sure she
had to deal with jealousy and
many who didn Tt understanding -
the call and assignment on her
life. What I really admire about F
her is she understood that there
was a job to be done and the
Lord wanted to use her to get it
done. :

she asked the people to fight.

calling the people to battle, She
gave them a commander and the
resources they needed. She also
gave them the word of the lord
that they would win. Under her
guidance, the children of Israel

Standing on the Right Side
of History

All my life I have been
- inspired by the work of Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr, and
my father, a King adviser, Dr.
Otis Moss Jr. The prophetic
brilliance of Dr. King to
speak about democracy and
the divine in the same breath
to this day sends a chill up my
spine. I have asked my
parents often: oHow did you
handle the pressure? ? oDid
you realize you were in the
middle of the delivery room
as America, with deep labor _
pains, gave birth to
democracy? ? My. parents
usually replied with smiles
and southern humility before
adding, oWe were on the right
side of history; ? As the new
pastor of Trinity United.
Church of Christ in Chicago,
I sense the labor pains of "
democracy are once again "
forcing America to give birth
to anew sacred dialogue
about race and class, because
a doctor/preacher has pushed
Us as a Country into a painful
but long overdue labor and
delivery.
I am convinced that
" mnuch of the recent
controversy stems from
the deep racial and
social divisions and
misunderstanding of
African-American
sacred rhetoric:
The words of Dr. Jeremiah A.
Wright have provided the
American people an
opportunity to give birth to a
new conversation about race
or abort the dialogue and.
substitute it with truncated
rhetoric about what should :
and should not be said from
behind the sacred desk. If we
. ?,?xamine briefly the.tradition
Dr. Wright follows, we get a
closer glimpse of the dialogue
I believe « our country is trying
to birth.

truth-tellers, such as Amos

crucifixion of Christ Ts
humanity puts us face to face
with the deep abiding grace of
God wrapped up in the oblue
note ? of Christ Ts humiliation.
The critical issue we are
being challenged to come to .
grips with at this moment is
our ability as Americans to be
bi-cultural. Are we willing to
look through the lens of
shrouded liberty lifted up by
Dr. Wright? Or, will we
_ choose to assume that our
faith tradition, political
perspective and cultural

Vantage point is the only
perspective worth engaging?
What an incredible gift to
give our children, if we.
choose to be bi-cultural :.
Americans instead of ethno-
~ centrists locked in our own ?
limited worldview of
humanity. The pain of this
omanufactured ? controversy
is that our democracy is
birthing a new conversation
into the civic arena on race, or
the grief of our democracy is
_- crying because our cynicism _
aborted her child: When the
history of this moment is
written, I pray we will all be
standing on the right side of
history.

About 100 people attended the annual Freedom
Fund Banquet, sponsored by the Pitt County Chapter of the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored
The Freedom Fund awards scholarships to at least one
Calvin Henderson, Pitt County president of the NAACP.
