          <lb />Minority Voice January<lb /><lb />18 - 25, 2008 pg4<lb /><lb />~ Celebrating The Anniversary Of<lb /><lb />_ Civil Rights Revisited Mr JimRouse,<lb /><lb />by Francis Taylor,<lb />Sentinel Staff Writer<lb /><lb />If Rev., Dr. Martin Luther King,<lb />Jr., were alive today, he would<lb />"be looking forward to his 79th<lb />birthday on January 15. Many<lb />have attempted over the years to<lb />ponder how he would feel and<lb />what he would say about many<lb />of the conditions and<lb />circumstances that have befallen<lb />Black people since his<lb />assassination in Memphis,<lb />Tennessee on April 4, 1968.<lb /><lb />From the relatively recent brutal<lb />police beating of Rodney King<lb />that sparked the Los Angeles<lb />Race Riots to the police killing<lb />of Tyisha Miller in Riverside,<lb />California and countless other<lb />acts of undeniable police<lb />misconduct against Blacks<lb />across the nation; an apparent<lb />deterioration of the Black<lb /><lb />family; the abysmal rate of<lb />Black high school graduates: the<lb />proliferation of unwed Black<lb />teenage mothers, and nearly<lb />every other category that<lb />compares and contrasts the<lb />condition of Blacks in the<lb /><lb />' United States, then and now, one<lb />may wonder whether or not the<lb />tireless work of Dr. King and<lb />other civil rights activists has<lb />made a real difference in our<lb />society.<lb /><lb />Arguably the most notable Black<lb />man in modern history, King<lb />will forever be known as the<lb />father of the civil rights<lb />movement, the man who<lb />through non-violent means, led<lb />the struggle for de-segregation<lb />and equality for Black ©<lb />Americans, and the man who<lb />had a dream for a color-blind<lb />America, :<lb /><lb />Despite the modest progres<lb /><lb />States, in 66 itrast to T lh<lb /><lb />of examples of racial T<lb />discrimination against Blacks in<lb />employment, education,<lb /><lb />economic empowerment, police ,<lb /><lb />treatment, and many other<lb />examples that point to a society<lb />that remains lacking in true<lb />equality, King would most<lb />certainly be pleased with the<lb />accomplishments of democratic<lb />presidential candidate, Barack "<lb />Obama, and more specifically,<lb />the citizens of lowa and New<lb />Hampshire.<lb /><lb />It appears that Obama is poised<lb />to symbolically deliver on one .<lb />of the dreams King expressed on<lb />the steps of the Lincoln<lb />Memorial in Washington, D.C.,<lb />at the March On Washington,<lb /> the greatest demonstration for<lb />freedom in the history of our<lb />nation, T on August 28, 1963,<lb /><lb />In that speech, which ranks at<lb />the top of the most powerful<lb />rations in the history of our<lb />nation, along with Abraham<lb />Lincoln Ts Gettysburg Address,<lb />and credited with mobilizing<lb />Blacks as well as Whites to<lb />Support desegregation and<lb />prompted the 1964 Civil Rights<lb />Act and a year later the Voting<lb />Rights Act, King expressed a<lb />dream for his four children,<lb /><lb /> oI have a dream that my four<lb />little children will one day live<lb /><lb />Aside from Obama Ts surprising<lb /><lb />momentum however, one might<lb /><lb />seek to understand why did it<lb /><lb />take so long for King Ts dreams<lb /><lb />to be resoundingly displayed in-<lb />. »America,<lb /><lb />As a participant in the historical<lb />March On Washington in 1963,<lb />this writer has first-hand<lb />recollection of the coming-<lb />together of men, women and<lb />children of all ages, races, and<lb />religious backgrounds who were<lb />moved by King Ts message and<lb />who were inspired to take that<lb />message, and hope, back to their<lb />respective communities.<lb /><lb />Baby-boomers, like myself,<lb />those born in the late 1940s and<lb />in the 1950s still have vivid<lb /><lb />memories of a life and struggle<lb />in this country that seems to<lb /><lb />have been lost among many of<lb />the children and most of the<lb />grandchildren of those baby<lb />boomers. |<lb /><lb />They cannot visualize the<lb />television images of Blacks<lb />being attacked by water hoses,<lb />police dogs, and billy-club T ?<lb />armed police officers on Bloody<lb />Sunday in Selma, Alabama in<lb />1964. They cannot fathom being<lb />denied food service at many<lb />neighborhood restaurants in.<lb />nearly every city in the nation.<lb />And while many may know the<lb /><lb />name, the new generation of<lb /><lb />Blacks may not appreciate the<lb />decision Rosa Parks made to<lb />ignore Jim Crow Laws, which T<lb />subsequently launched the<lb /><lb />successful 382-Day Bus Boycott<lb /><lb />in Birmingham, Alabama that:<lb />ultimately led the Supreme<lb />Court to outlaw racial<lb />segregation on any form of<lb />public transportation.<lb /><lb />. They do not have any.<lb />conception of the number of<lb />Black-owned business<lb /><lb />534<lb /><lb />being denied entrance to a White<lb />movie theater and later allowed<lb />to enter and sit in the Colored<lb />Section T only.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately also, many of the<lb />offspring of those baby-boomers<lb />cannot grasp the feeling of<lb />learning that their parent was<lb />denied a job or promotion<lb />opportunity because of their<lb />Black skin. They will never have<lb />the opportunity to sit with an<lb />aunt, grandparent or other<lb />family member who was able to<lb />talk about their parents Tearing<lb />in a segregated South or as a<lb />slave. .<lb /><lb />Similarly, they are generally<lb />oblivious to the fact that King,<lb />along with the Southern<lb />Christian Leadership Conference<lb />(SCLC) and other civil rights<lb />leaders and organizations ©<lb />marched, demonstrated, and<lb />were frequently arrested and<lb />tossed in jail, in pursuit of the<lb />right to vote, equal<lb />Opportunities, and other liberties<lb />that are now usually taken for<lb /><lb />granted.<lb /><lb />At the same time it is also<lb />prudent to point-out other<lb />BGO Ts (blind glimpses of the<lb />obvious). <p>Minority Voice January 18<lb />Excerpt from King Ts<lb />Final Speech .<lb /><lb />I Tve Seen The Promised<lb /><lb />I Tm delighted to see each of you<lb />here tonight in spite of a storm _<lb />warning. You reveal that you are<lb />nee ee on anyhow.<lb />omething is happening in<lb />Memphis, something is<lb />happening in our world.<lb /><lb />As you know, if I were standing<lb />at the beginning of time, with<lb />the possibility of general and<lb />panoramic view of the whole<lb />human history up to now, and<lb />the Almighty said to me,<lb /> oMartin Luther King, which age<lb />would you like to live in? ? " |<lb />would take my mental flight by<lb />Egypt through, or rather across<lb />the Red Sea, through the<lb />wilderness on toward the<lb />promised land. And in spite of<lb />its magnificence, I wouldn Tt stop<lb />there. I would move on by<lb /><lb />, and take my mind to<lb />Mount Olympus. And I would<lb />see Plato, Aristotle, Socrates,<lb />Euripides and Aristophanes<lb />assembled around the Parthenon<lb />as they discussed the great and<lb />eternal issues of reality,<lb /><lb />But I wouldn Tt stop there. I<lb />would go on, even to the great<lb />heyday of the Roman Empire.<lb />And I would see developments<lb />around there, through various<lb />emperors and leaders. But I<lb />wouldn Tt stop there. I would<lb />?,?ven come up to the day of the<lb />Renaissance, and get a quick<lb />Picture of all that the<lb />Renaissance did for the cultural<lb />and esthetic life of man. But I -<lb />wouldn Tt stop there. I would<lb />even go by the way that the man<lb />for whom I Tm named had his<lb />habitat. And I would watch<lb />Martin Luther as he tacked his<lb />ninety-five theses on the door at<lb />the church in Wittenberg.<lb /><lb />But I wouldn Tt stop there. I<lb />would come on up even to 1863,<lb />and watch a vacillating president<lb />by the name of Abraham<lb />Lincoln finally come to the<lb />conclusion that he had to sign<lb />the Emancipation Proclamation.<lb />But I wouldn Tt stop there. I<lb />would even. come up the early<lb /><lb />es, and see a man grappling | |<lb /><lb />With the problems of the<lb />bankruptcy of his nation. And<lb />come with an eloquent cry that<lb />we have nothing to fear but fear<lb />itself, |<lb /><lb />But I wouldh Tt stop there.<lb />Strangely enough, I would turn<lb />to the Almighty, and say, oIf you<lb />allow me to live just a few years<lb />in the second half of the<lb />twentieth century, I will be<lb />happy. ? Now that Ts a strange<lb />statement to make, because the<lb />world is all messed up. The<lb />nation is sick. Trouble is in the<lb />land. Confusion all around.<lb />That Ts a strange statement, But I<lb />know, somehow, that only when<lb />it is dark enough, can you see<lb />the stars. And I see God working<lb />in this period of the twentieth<lb />century in a way that men, in<lb />some strange way, are<lb />responding "something is<lb />happening in our world, The<lb />masses of people are rising up.<lb />And wherever they are<lb />assembled today, whether they<lb />are in Johannesburg, South<lb />Africa; Nairobi, Kenya: Accra,<lb />Ghana; New York City; Atlanta,<lb />Georgia; Jackson, Mississippi;<lb />or Memphis, Tennessee "the cry<lb />is always the same " ?We want<lb />to be free. ?<lb /><lb />And ig a Be that I Tm<lb /><lb />Py to live in this period is<lb />on we have been forced to a<lb />point where we're going to have<lb />to grapple with the problems<lb />that men have been trying to<lb />grapple with through history, but<lb />the demands didn Tt force them<lb />to do it. Survival demands that<lb />we grapple with them, Men, for<lb />years now, have been talki<lb />about war and peace. But now,<lb />no longer can they just talk<lb />about it. It is no longer a choice<lb />between violence and<lb />nonviolence in this world; it Ts<lb />nonviolence or nonexistence,<lb /><lb />That is where we are today, And<lb />also in the human rights<lb />revolution, if something isn Tt<lb /><lb />- 25, 2008 pg6<lb /><lb />The L<lb /><lb />il Willie Center Shinning Star In A Strong Community _<lb /><lb />done, and in a hurry, to bring the<lb /><lb />colored peoples of the world out<lb />Speech cont. pg 9<lb /><lb /></p>
