        <p>Minority Voice SAT INDICTEL<lb /><lb />REP. WRIG<lb /><lb />REP. THOMAS WRIGHT<lb /><lb />by CASH MICHAELS<lb />The Wilmington Journal<lb /><lb />Originally posted 12/18/2007<lb /><lb />Now that a Wake County .<lb />grand jury has indicted state<lb />Rep. Thomas Wright on five<lb />felony counts of fraud and one<lb />felony count of obstruction of<lb />justice, will the eight-term<lb />Democrat step down for the<lb />good of his district?<lb /><lb />Or will Gov. Mike Easley be<lb />forced to call.a special session<lb />of the Legislature to formally<lb />expel the eight-term New<lb />Hanover " Pender Democrat?<lb /><lb />And if that happens, how will a<lb />majority of the NC Legislative<lb />Black Caucus vote? Many<lb />members stood firmly with<lb />former House Speaker Jim<lb />Black even after he was.<lb />indicted for corruption last<lb />year.<lb /><lb />Will they stand by a fellow<lb />African-American lawmaker in<lb />his time of need, maintaining<lb />that he is innocent until proven<lb />guilty by law, or will the<lb />caucus vote to remove what<lb />many have said is a corrupt<lb />embarrassment to the<lb />Legislature, and the people of<lb />North Carolina?<lb /><lb />Last spring, the State Board of<lb />Elections found evidence of<lb />fraud against Wright, turning<lb /><lb />_ their findings over to Wake<lb />County District Attorney C.<lb />Colin Willoughby for criminal<lb /><lb />prosecution. me AS ot ns i +:<lb /><lb />This week, a ake Wright<lb /><lb />grand jury indicted Wright for<lb /><lb />~ failing to report over $200,000<lb />in campaign contributions as<lb />required by law, and using<lb />some of that money for his<lb /><lb />ersonal use. He was also<lb /><lb />indicted for falsely obtaining a<lb />$150,000 bank loan that was<lb />never paid back..<lb /><lb />If convicted, Wright could<lb />spend up to eleven years in<lb />prison. |<lb /><lb />House Speaker Joe Hackney<lb />announced this week that the<lb />joint legislative ethics<lb />committee is formally<lb />investigating the allegations.<lb />The panel has all of its<lb />evidence, and plans hold a<lb />public hearing in early<lb />February.<lb /><lb />Another special committee will<lb />probe allegations of fiscal<lb />misappropriation that speak to<lb /><lb />» conduct, but not Wright's role<lb /><lb />as a lawmaker.<lb /><lb />After the hearings, a<lb />recommendation as to Rep.<lb />Wright Ts possible ouster is<lb />expected. If it is made, the<lb />governor will then be asked to<lb />call a special one-day<lb />legislative session to make it<lb />official.<lb /><lb />That would be historic. No<lb />member has been expelled in<lb />over a hundred-and-twenty<lb />years.<lb /><lb />Unless Wright throws in the<lb />towel, there is no shortage of<lb />leaders anxious to show<lb />im the door, if for no other<lb />reason than to get him off the<lb />litical radar screen for the<lb />8 elections.<lb /><lb /> o*..»[ T]he leadership of the<lb />local party concluded that<lb />present circumstances require<lb />that the Democratic Party<lb />should begin the process of<lb />looking for another Demoe:<lb />candidate to run for the Hous<lb />18 seat in 2008, ? wrote Jim<lb />Morgan, chairman of the New .<lb />Hanover County Democratic<lb />Party, in statement this week,<lb /><lb /> oFurthermore, we have<lb /><lb />toe as<lb /><lb />Roa Be<lb />%, 3<lb /><lb />communicated to Rep. Wright<lb />our own View that it would be.<lb />in the best interests of Rep.<lb />Wright Ts constituents and the<lb />best interests of Rep. Wright<lb />himself that he now focus all<lb />of his attentions on his legal<lb />affairs while the party focuses<lb />its energies on finding a<lb />replacement to represent the<lb />people of his district. ?<lb /><lb />Morgan continued, oIn past<lb />ears, Rep. Wright has served<lb />is district well. In the énd, if<lb /><lb />Rep. Wright is acquitted, he<lb /><lb />will have every right to.<lb /><lb />criticize his accusers. That<lb />being said, we believe that if<lb /><lb />Wright is to have any liope of<lb /><lb />salvaging his political career,<lb /><lb />he needs to step down now to<lb />concentrate on his legal ©<lb /><lb />defense.<lb /><lb />Meanwhile, the people of the<lb />18th House need representation<lb />from someone who can pour<lb />their full energies into the job<lb />of governing. ? eee<lb /><lb />At press time Wednesday,<lb />Wright still wasn Tt saying a _<lb />word, earlier maintaining that |<lb />only the voters in his New.<lb />Hanover/Pender counties<lb /><lb />- district should remove him<lb /><lb />from office. a<lb /><lb />The growing chorus against<lb />him does not agree. !<lb /><lb /> oI don Tt think the indictment<lb />comes as Surprise to anyone, ?<lb />State Senator Julia Boseman, a<lb />Democrat, told WECT-TV. _<lb /> oTt Ts unfortunate that he did not<lb />step down when asked so this<lb />cloud could be lifted off of the<lb />legislature and Wilmington. "<lb />The people he is suppose to<lb />represent have had no<lb />representation in the house this<lb />session. ? .<lb /><lb />Boseman, in fact, made it her<lb />business to be all over the<lb />media this week to rachet up<lb />the pressure on Wright to step<lb />down now.<lb /><lb /> oWe've had to pick up the...<lb />slack in the Senate and the<lb /><lb />_ other members of the local<lb /><lb />delegation, which we Tre happy<lb />to do but those folks deserve<lb />someone up there fighting for<lb /><lb />' them, someone who is going to<lb /><lb />represent them, and not -<lb />metaecives, she told WWAY-<lb />TV3.<lb /><lb />North Carolina Republicans<lb />also smelled blood.<lb /><lb /> oAlthough I am relieved to see<lb />that we are a step closer to<lb />Justice in this case, it is also a<lb />reminder that a culture of<lb />corruption has been allowed to<lb />reign for too long in Raleigh, ?<lb />NC Republican Party Chair<lb />Linda Daves said in a<lb />statement. oThe Democrat<lb />leadership in North Carolina<lb />has seen disgrace befall many<lb /><lb />of its most powerful members.<lb /><lb />Thomas Wright is another in a<lb />long line to see their misdeeds<lb />finally brought out into the<lb />light. ?<lb /><lb />Senate Republican Leader Phil<lb />Berger echoed that cry.<lb /><lb /> oT call on every member of the<lb />General Assembly to demand<lb />that Representative Wright<lb />resign immediately, ? the<lb />Rockingham Republican said<lb />in a statement.<lb /><lb /> oIf you really care about your<lb />district, it Ts time to step aside, ?<lb />Gov.
