As<lb />we put more Blacks in<lb />political offices, our.<lb />condition is worsening.<lb /><lb />There is a national -<lb /><lb />phenomenon that is |<lb />spreading its wings in the<lb /><lb />United States and it is<lb /><lb />ensnaring all Blacks. A<lb />recent study by the Pew<lb />Charitable Trusts shows<lb />that while the middle class<lb />of every other ethnic<lb />group is expanding, the |<lb />Black middle class is on<lb /><lb />the decline, Black children 7<lb /><lb />will not fare as well<lb />economically as their _<lb />parents. More than two<lb />million Black males<lb />assembled on the National<lb />Mall. Since 1995, the war<lb />on Black males has<lb />escalated with no solution<lb /><lb />in sight.<lb /><lb />~ Without the right of<lb /><lb />political representation,<lb />Blacks can only act as<lb />proxies and pawns for<lb /><lb /> those:who have an<lb /><lb />economic stake in this<lb /><lb />~ country. The<lb /><lb />Fifteenth Amendment .<lb /><lb />authorizes Congress to<lb />enact legislation to keep<lb />discrimination out of the<lb /><lb /> polling booth, For ninety-<lb /><lb />five years, voting rights.<lb />abuses were honored in<lb />the breach. Voting rights<lb />focus, primarily, on<lb /><lb />polling booths and not on<lb />legislative arenas nor on<lb /><lb />_ political decision-making.<lb /> The condition precedent<lb /><lb />to enjoying the right of<lb />political representation is<lb />the exercise of the rights<lb /><lb />- under the First<lb /><lb />Amendment. These rights<lb />include free speech;<lb /><lb />freedom of assembly,<lb /><lb />freedom of association<lb />and petitioning the<lb /><lb />- government for a redress<lb /><lb />of grievances, Any<lb />examination of the legal<lb /><lb />history of the First "<lb /><lb />Amendment will show<lb />that Blacks have not fared<lb />well. There is a reason<lb />why it is termed the oFirst<lb />Amendment, ? however, It<lb />is the most important of<lb />all the constitutional<lb />amendments. All<lb />elements of the First<lb />Amendment must be<lb />present to constitute<lb />political representation.<lb /><lb />- Blacks are not allowed to<lb /><lb />engage in political speech.<lb />Cong. Adam Clayton<lb /><lb />Powell found this out<lb />,_ When, he h hosted alert<lb /><lb />erence<lb /><lb />of the first nails in his<lb />coffin, He had previously<lb />criticized the corrupt<lb /><lb />_.. practices of the NYPD.<lb /> New York is stil a a police<lb /><lb />Hill. Any<lb /><lb />Black person who:<lb /><lb /> oengages in Political :<lb />speech is committing<lb />treason. In 2007, Blacks "<lb /><lb />- tust still know their<lb /><lb /> oplace. Jim Crow is still<lb /><lb />alive, Forty years ago, Dr.<lb /><lb />King spoke out against<lb /> the Vietnam War at<lb /><lb />Riverside Church in<lb />Manhattan on April 4,<lb />1967. The following year,<lb />on April 4, military<lb />intelligence of the U.S.<lb />Army assassinated him in<lb />Memphis, TN, Connect<lb />the dots. We must<lb /><lb />- strengthen our knowledge<lb /><lb />_ of our history.<lb /><lb />| Very few Blacks know the<lb />causes of the Civil War. -<lb />Frederick Douglass,<lb />among others, knew that<lb />Blacks had to have a.<lb /><lb />"voice in the political<lb /><lb />_ debate. Thus, he helped<lb />form the Liberty<lb />and, subsequently, the<lb />Free Soil Party. This is<lb />instructive. To have a<lb />voice in:politics, an<lb />oppressed group must<lb />have its own political<lb />party. Our ancestors must<lb />be turning over in their<lb />graves. No self-respecting<lb />Black person, in the<lb />nineteenth century, would<lb />have enrolled in the<lb /><lb /> oslave party. ? It still is. However the turkey.<lb /><lb />salad stuffed in tender crois-<lb />sant rolls was enough to fill<lb />in the empty spots.<lb /><lb />This was a P-A-R-<lb />TEE-Y Folks - classy and<lb />fun. I spent my second night<lb />in nearby Clemens in spa-<lb />cious surroundings provided<lb />by Linda and Tony Chambers<lb />as their guest. I had<lb />only planned to spend only a<lb />night in the city and then take<lb />the train back to Rocky Mount<lb />the next morning but because<lb />of some " wonderful<lb />fellowshipping and some urg-<lb />ing from Rodeo Rich I changed<lb />that plan. The neat thing about<lb />that was if you planned on do-<lb />ing some drinking or you were<lb />a little tired from all of the fes-<lb />tivities, the lodgings on-campus<lb />were quite comfortable. Now<lb />Amtrak to Greensboro was an-<lb />other pleasant surprise.<lb />Pricewise the round trip fare<lb />from Rocky Mount to Greens-<lb /><lb />_ boro was. only $60.32. Later I discov-<lb />ered that it was Cuba Gooding<lb /><lb />himself rehersing. After taking<lb />a few more. snaps I headed T<lb /><lb />back to the hotel and met up<lb />with oRodeo Rich. ?<lb /><lb />Rotleo & Trail Ride pro-<lb />moter Rich Washington of<lb /><lb /> ojeans to<lb /><lb />Cowboy Mania (and Jim<lb />Rouse Ts cousin) was preparing<lb />his awards to present to mem-<lb />bers of the Black Trail Riders<lb />Association later on that<lb />evening. This was a new event<lb />and a extra added attraction for<lb />the TURKEY SHAKE<lb />PARTY. It isn Tt everyday that<lb />you see black folks sharply<lb />dressed walking around in<lb />Cowboy attire mixing in with<lb />the rest of the crowd. And it is<lb />true, the oGood Guys ? do wear<lb />white hats, and beige hats and<lb />black hats too. So do the Cow-<lb />girls and I am looking forward<lb />to seeing how they. look<lb />dressed in blue jeans and sit-<lb />ting on a horse. According to<lb />Rodeo Rich and Tony Cham-<lb />bers, a trailride and entertain-<lb />ment event is in the planning<lb />stages. They are rumoring<lb /><lb />Millie Jackson. And I imagine<lb /><lb />she would still look good in<lb /><lb />With Tony Chambers and<lb />his band backing up The Main<lb />Ingredient turned out to be<lb />smooth and top notch perform-<lb />ers. Adding to that Tony was a<lb />superb vocalist. His skills as a<lb />saxaphonist border on genius.<lb />He was a man who was mas-<lb />terfully in charge of his instru-<lb />ment and as a person who has<lb />spent decades in the radio busi-<lb />ness I can afford to be a critic<lb />and I was impressed. Tony cur-<lb />rently has two CD Ts chocked<lb />full of original works (he has<lb />studio facilities in his home and<lb /><lb />Spends time fine-tuning his re-<lb /><lb />cording skills).
