Re ba a ae<lb /><lb />Presentation<lb /><lb />provides equal .<lb /><lb />Minority Voice October 26 - 31, 2007 pgl0<lb /><lb />Rally<lb /><lb />in Beaufort "<lb />Oct. 20,2007<lb />We are here this moming<lb />because we have found __<lb />ourselves in a predicament that<lb />is detrimental to the young black<lb />youth in our community and our<lb />county. We have too few black<lb /><lb />teachers and black principals.<lb />This is a major problem.<lb /><lb />We can Tt help but look at the<lb />famous words of the Declaration<lb />of Independence. oWe hold<lb />these truths to be self evident,<lb />that all men are created equal.<lb /><lb />_ Thatthey are endowed by their<lb /><lb />career with certain inalienable<lb />rights; that ae life,<lb />happiness. ? Now with these<lb />worlds, the authors of the<lb />Declaration of Independence<lb />outlined a bold vision of a nation,<lb />in which all people would be free<lb />and equal. More thantwo.<lb /> hundred years later, it has yet to<lb />be achieved. Though. ?<lb />generations of civil rights<lb />activism have led to important<lb />gains in legal, political, social,<lb />employment, educational, and<lb />other spheres, the forced<lb />removal of the poor, the needy;<lb />those lacking basic necessities of<lb />life; and the enslavement of<lb />those of African descent,<lb />marked the beginning of a<lb />system of racial injustice from<lb /><lb />which ournationhasyetto<lb /><lb />break free. While the law<lb />opportunity in<lb />theory, it is too often denied in<lb /><lb />fact, This is evident by the lack "<lb /><lb />of black principals and teachers<lb />within our school system.<lb /><lb />Here it is now, more than fifty<lb />years after Brown versus the<lb />Board of Education, many<lb />students of color, throughout the<lb />United States, including Beaufort<lb />County, continue to struggle in<lb />facial isolation. What few<lb />blacks teachers we have<lb />continue to struggle in racial<lb /><lb />isolation, Some people may tell<lb /><lb />you, oit does not matter what<lb />color the principals and teachers<lb />are. ? Not so. For too long, the<lb />white culture has been dominant<lb />because of economic power,<lb />(money), wealth, political |<lb />representation, and influence of<lb />the media. It is not possible to<lb />create ethnic identity in our<lb />children and young adults if<lb />there is no representation at the<lb />educational level when young<lb />lives are being shaped. Too<lb />many of our youth already<lb />struggle with family difficulties,<lb />poverty, social problems.<lb />Growing up in a school system<lb />where there is no black<lb />representation or leadership is<lb />sending a harsh, destructive<lb />message. .<lb /><lb />"Aetrex Diabetic Shoes offer innovative comfort<lb />and performance features that allow the footwear<lb />fo meet your footcare needs!"<lb />FEATURES: Muliple removable insoles rile depth<lb />and fing flexibility. ? Itleadstoa<lb /><lb />higher percentage of school<lb />drop-outs. This results in the<lb />loss of a potential pool of<lb />talented black citizens for<lb />Beaufort County and the<lb />American society. An<lb />educational experience should be<lb />a pleasant and rewarding one,<lb />and this can happen if our<lb />students are exposed to its fair<lb />share of black leaders in<lb />authority within our school .<lb />system. Research over the past<lb />ten years have pointed out the .<lb />negative, detrimental affects that<lb />a mainstream American<lb />educational experience can have<lb />a black American and other<lb />minority students when there are<lb />no role models present like<lb />themselves. Without black: '<lb />teachers for guidance, many of<lb /><lb />~ our black students have<lb /><lb />difficulties at school. Their<lb /><lb />__ behavior is seen as disruptive<lb /><lb />rather than an expressionof _<lb /><lb />their own cultural styles. This®.<lb />attitude leadstoahigher = ?<lb />numbers of Black students being<lb />suspended from school, placed.<lb /><lb />in special education classes; and "<lb /><lb />being viewed as deprived or<lb />disadvantage. re<lb /><lb />Right now the total percentage :<lb /><lb />of black teachers with our<lb />school system is very disturbing.<lb />Out of the 25 or so positions for.<lb />principals and assistant T<lb />principals, only two Blacks are:<lb />currently serving inthat:<lb /><lb />ae<lb /><lb />Capacity. There were no Black<lb /><lb />teachers hired this school year.<lb />There are-approximately 7,250<lb /><lb />students enrolled in school in "<lb /> Beaufort County, Almost half of |<lb />those students are Black. There<lb /><lb />are 498 teachers employed by<lb /><lb />schools; we have no Black<lb /><lb />teachers at Bath Elementary, but -<lb /><lb />there are 46 teachers on the<lb />staff; Chocowinity Primary has<lb /><lb />47 teachers, only two are black; .<lb /><lb />Chocowinity Middle School has<lb />37 teachers, only 3 are black;<lb /><lb />all those w!<lb /><lb />Eastern Elementary has 52<lb /><lb />endeavors. In 2007, this should<lb />not be happening. It signifies<lb />that we are losing progress and<lb />test scores are proving that our<lb />black youth are losing ground.<lb /><lb />Black candidates did apply, but<lb />were not interviewed, nor hired,<lb />Their applications were<lb />overlooked. We could have, and<lb /><lb />should have had Black qualified<lb /> teachers and principals hired this<lb /><lb />school year, Two of the<lb /><lb />applicants were born and raised "<lb /><lb />in Beaufort County, and were<lb />honor students,<lb /><lb />As parents, grandparents, aunts,<lb />and uncles, we all must pay ~<lb />close attention to all this is .:<lb />happening within our schools,<lb />We must make the decision to<lb />become active in the educational<lb />processes that apply to our T.<lb />children, If not, we must face _<lb />the consequerices that will fall<lb />upon our youth should they leave<lb /><lb />- aschool system unprepared;<lb /><lb />whether they become drop-outs<lb /><lb />or leave schools never passing<lb /><lb />end-of-course tests, Those "<lb />Students exiting schools<lb /><lb />_ Unprepared face grave<lb />_ Challenges today. To break it down by<lb /><lb />certain unemployment.<lb /><lb />More and more, our prisons are<lb />being filled with low-level, drug<lb />and other non-violent offenders.<lb />Thirty years ago, there were<lb /><lb />300,000 people in the United<lb /><lb />Stats prisons. Today, that .<lb />parole, the number of peo<lb /><lb />. The oVerise of<lb /><lb />_ chance at obtaining their fair<lb /><lb />share of the American dream.<lb />Only then can the Declaration of<lb />Independence have'some<lb />meaning for our youth.<lb /><lb />We must think of the victories<lb />gained during the Civil Rights<lb />Movement. Gradually, we are<lb />losing some of those gains.<lb />When we look at the make-up of<lb />the Supreme Court and their<lb />views on civil rights and<lb />affirmative action, we must<lb />realize that the struggle for civil<lb />Tights must continue. .We must<lb />remember the words of the late -<lb />Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.;<lb />when he was down in Alabama<lb /><lb />addressing a crowd marching for:<lb /><lb />the right to vote. He said:<lb /><lb /> oI know you are asking today,<lb /> o How long will it take. ?
