<lb />J ournalist Murder News: Black Muslims Hated, Hunted Chris Thomp \<lb /><lb />DEDICATED TO THE<lb /><lb />CONTRIBUTIONS OF<lb /><lb />AFRICAN AMERICANS<lb />August 2007 Issue<lb /><lb /> |Black - Owned Construction Company The ==<lb /><lb />Choice Of Newly Renovated College Campuses ?<lb /><lb />Submitted By Staff<lb />Burney & Burney<lb /><lb />On 8/24/06, Burmey & Burney Construction Co., Inc. came out of the bidding office on ECU Ts campus as the lowest bidder for the BEU-North Rareational<lb />Complex project located on Highway 264 E. Burney & Burney accomplished two things that day: Being the lowest bidder & becoming one of the few black<lb /><lb />contractors to ever receive this size of an award from ECU. Burney & Burney has in the past performed work for ECU, but no where near this magnitude; howe er<lb /><lb />they are teaming on a project to construct a Coastal Studies Institute in Manteo, NC for ECU. Mr. Owen Bumey, : :<lb /><lb />President of Burney & Bumey stated, oThis is not the first large job we bid through the UNC - System or at ECU. ? .<lb /><lb />Burney & Burney Ts states blessings do not come from any system, it comes from our Lord Savior Jesus Christ !<lb /><lb /> This maybe a record for ECU in awarding this size contract to a minority; however, by no means is this type of contract<lb /><lb />similar in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Burney comments, that this project has been in great opportunity to highlight Burney &<lb /><lb />Bumey Ts management & organizational skills to bring together a successful team who will complete this project months<lb /><lb />ahead of the scheduled completion date & within budget.<lb /><lb />ECU-North Recreational a project contains approximately 70 acres which will include a 6 acre lake to be used<lb />, {or fishing, small craft boating, 4 rugby fields, 4 soccer fields, an artifical<lb />beach, a toilet facility, maintenance & storage facility, concession stand<lb />& more than 400 parking spaces. This is only Phase I of the project;<lb />the next phase will include another 60 acres to include 4 additional soccer fields, 4 baseball diigioads, 4 tennis<lb />courts, a golf course, a 3-story recreational building, a boat dock, volley ball area on the extended beach & a<lb />_ natural walking trail. Burney & Bumey Ts project manager Dallas Peele and Superintendent, Michael Rodgers both<lb />agrees that oduring the construction of this project, we have been proactive with planning and of all<lb />contracted work. We have had a good working relationship with ECU and the designer with 75% of work<lb /><lb />PAT DUNN FOR MAYOR<lb />a ae<lb /><lb />CHIP LITTLEFOR<lb />MAYOR<lb /><lb />pas<lb /><lb />_ completed. ?. Mr. Burney added that oWe are blessed to have an opportunity to build this project in our community<lb />_ &toserve others like this one in our home town. We want other minorities to know " " Yes, it Ts hard out here,<lb /> butyou Tve got to keep believing and shaking the bushes until something falls; when it falls (and it will fall if you are a<lb /><lb />Marciis Mosiah Garvey, Jr.,<lb />National Hero of Jamaica ?<lb />was born on August 17, 1887<lb />ae 10,1940<lb /><lb />Organ Donor Drive A<lb /><lb />~ true Seaevet) please do not forget who made it possible-- "-God! o Bumey & Bumey states = wil receive<lb />ie :<lb /><lb />that was built with uality aS if<lb /><lb />by Jamie Williams Many more peoplestopped by<lb />The Daily Reflector . toask questions, he said,<lb />Thursday, August 02,2007 He dhestons Were answered<lb />hes hei eons oT Td say it was a big success;<lb />Dwain Cooper Ts expectations wo Kedigpeny sipady teat<lb /> coming in all day, ? In 2002, after family<lb />patriarch Yusuf Bey was ar-<lb />rested on charges that he raped<lb />a 13-year-old girl, my Express<lb />series reported that Bey family<lb />members had allegedly un-<lb />leashed a wave of murder, rape,<lb />and fraud on Oakland, and the<lb />city Ts leaders praised them and<lb />gave them million-dollar loans in<lb /><lb />y .<lb />tortured a man for four hours,<lb />beating him with a police<lb />aight bung his ngrip<lb />with hot knives, and trying to<lb />drown him in a toilet, For years,<lb />the Bey family allegedly beat<lb /><lb />and terrorized helpless black<lb />residents of low-income apart-<lb />ments they controlled, but the<lb />authorities never bothered to "<lb />stop them. He drove to the office<lb />and asked to see me, and I.<lb />foolishly walked out to the<lb />lobby long enough for him to<lb />get a good look at my face.<lb />Feeling a little hinky about the<lb /><lb />strange grin he had on his face, I<lb /><lb />told my editor Steve Buel I was<lb />taking the day off, and he<lb /><lb />agreed to drive me home. While<lb /><lb />waiting for his car outside the<lb />office, I noticed a red minivan<lb />that looked out of place, but no<lb />one appeared to be behind the<lb />wheel. When I jumped inthe -<lb />car, the same man rose up from<lb />underneath the dashboard, He<lb />was trying to follow me home.<lb />Buel gunned the engine and .<lb />trapped the car in place, told<lb />me to memorize the license-<lb /><lb />plate number, and swung back<lb /><lb />to the entrance. Howard Rooks Distinguished<lb />Professor as their speaker. The<lb />affair was sponsored by. the<lb />Greenville-Pitt County Chamber<lb />of Commerce and Embarq at the<lb />Brook Valley Country Club and<lb />was well attended by local<lb />business people, educators, city<lb />officials and a host of. others.<lb />Niswander, using numerous<lb />gtaphs during a lecture which<lb />lasted almost 90 minutes, gave a<lb /><lb />detailed analysis of the state of the "<lb /><lb />economy and linked it to what<lb />impact it may have on eastern<lb /><lb />North Carolina and Pitt County. -<lb /><lb />Although Niswander painted a<lb />somewhat dismal picture for the<lb />_ housing and mortgage market<lb />saying that there is about three<lb />trillion dollars tied up in loans,<lb />especially in sub-prime lending<lb />nationally, Translation: if homes<lb />default at lesser prices then<lb />originally agreed upon when sold.<lb />because they were purchased<lb />outside one Ts means, there could<lb />be problems - there could be lots<lb />of problems.<lb /><lb />Currently, according to<lb />Niswander;. the known<lb />delinquency rates now stand at<lb /><lb />15% nationally. He said it was too<lb />early to determine which way the<lb />economy will go because of the<lb />amounts of possible default<lb />collectively can Tt be determined<lb />because currently economists are<lb />not quite sure just how much and<lb />in what sectors these funds are<lb />tied up in: He said it would be<lb />several more months before any<lb />kind of hard evidence would<lb />surface. This phenomenon is<lb />additionally compounded by over<lb />hanging housing. He indicated<lb />that the durable goods report<lb />which will be soon be released in<lb />a few weeks should indicate<lb />which way the economy will go.<lb />Elsewhere, Diswander expressed<lb />some concerned that there was<lb /> oblood in the streets ? as far as<lb /><lb />Treasury Bonds were concern.--<lb /><lb />These fluctuations were catching<lb /><lb />-alotof investors off guard.<lb /><lb />In greater Greenville, housing<lb />Starts are up but much of that<lb />growth is tied up multi-dwelling<lb />units, Locally, manufacturing.<lb />Health care and social service<lb />emerged as Pitt County strongest<lb />economic. sector, followed by.<lb />rétail, education and food<lb /><lb />services in that order. However,<lb /><lb />what mystified Niswander was<lb /><lb />that retail spending per person has<lb />remained somewhat. flat.<lb />Someone else mentioned that the<lb /><lb /> obig spenders ? might be shopping<lb /><lb />elsewhere. Farming, Niswander .<lb /><lb />said that farming has fallen of the<lb />chart. The Outer Banks is<lb />showing growth in employment<lb /><lb />according to Niswander and that 4<lb />employment in Pitt County has<lb />remained pretty much the same<lb /><lb />over the last several years by<lb />comparison to the rest of the<lb /><lb />region and the rest of the state. |<lb /><lb />More of what was discussed in<lb /><lb />regards to the economy can be |<lb /><lb />perused in their E-Focus<lb /><lb />magazine which is published on<lb /><lb />their website at:<lb /><lb />http: in, ecu. edu :<lb /><lb />upload/E_Focus_July_2007 pat.<lb /><lb />These Power Lunches are<lb />sponsored by the Chamber of<lb />Commerce and are T extended<lb />their membership in which the<lb />Mvoice Newspaper and<lb />WOOW Radio actively attend.<lb /><lb />Dr. Frederick (Rick)<lb /><lb />Niswander, Dean of ECU Ts<lb />College of Business (photo)<lb /><lb />100 Phenomal Women In Red<lb />ECU Willis Building<lb /><lb />Aug. 11, 07<lb /><lb />Greenville,NC<lb /><lb />Event Cord.
