If they<lb />could fight and die for their<lb />country, they thought, they<lb />could surely enjoy the<lb />benefits of equality and<lb />democracy.<lb /><lb />Said one WWI Black<lb />lieutenant to a New York<lb />Times reporter on why he was<lb />there,<lb /><lb /> oOne of my men came to me<lb />several days ago...,and asked<lb /><lb />me why I had joined the :<lb />Army. He reminded me that! _ |<lb />was above the draft age and<lb />he wanted me to tell him that<lb /><lb />I was fighting for. I told him I<lb />was fighting for what the flag<lb />méant to the Negroes in the<lb />United States.<lb /><lb /> oT told him that now is our<lb />opportunity to prove what we<lb />can do. If we can Tt fight and<lb />die in this war just as bravely<lb />as the white men then we<lb />don Tt deserve equality with<lb />white men, and after the war<lb />we better go back home and<lb />forget about it all. ? (Taken<lb /><lb />_ from Buffalo Soliders at<lb />Huachuca: Radical<lb />Awareness After the War).<lb /><lb />From Vietnam to today Ts War<lb />in Iraq, military requirement<lb />has been heavy in poverty<lb />stricken neighborhoods. With<lb />the promise of money,<lb />benefits, and education, many<lb />Blacks join, looking for a way<lb />out, For the most part, they<lb />have ended up on the front<lb />lines, dying without ever<lb />seeing the benefits. Antipas, son of Herod -<lb />the Great (2:1) and a<lb />Samaritan mother, hence<lb />Archelaus Ts full brother<lb />(2:22), had functioned as<lb />tetrarch over Galilee and<lb />Perea since about 4 B.C. He<lb />had entered into a politically<lb />prudent marriage with a<lb />Nabatean princess, perhaps<lb />seeking to secure further<lb />loyalty from Nabatean " |<lb />subjects within his territory of<lb />Perea (Kraeling 1951:89).<lb /><lb />But when Antipas divorced<lb />his first wife to take his<lb />brother Ts wife, he violated not<lb />only Jesus T teaching on the<lb />moral indissolubility of<lb />marriage (5:31-32) but also<lb />the Mosaic law concerning<lb />incest (Lev 18:16; 20:21).<lb />John thus publicly reproached<lb />a public example of<lb />immorality. But what John<lb />viewed in moral terms<lb />Antipas undoubtedly saw in<lb />political terms as well<lb />(compare Jos. Ant. 18.118;<lb />Kraeling 1951:85, 90-91,<lb />143-45). Antipas Ts plans to<lb />divorce his first wife had<lb />provoked trouble with her<lb />father, the powerful Nabatean<lb />king Aretas (on whom see 2<lb />Cor 11:32-33). This trouble<lb />ultimately led to war and<lb />public humiliation for Antipas<lb />(Jos. Ant. 18.113-14, 124-25),<lb />That many Nabateans in<lb />Perea presumably remained<lb />loyal to Aretas further<lb />extended the political<lb />implications of Herod Ts affair.<lb />A prophet harping on the<lb />tetrarch Ts misbehavior was<lb />therefore politically<lb />dangerous.<lb /><lb />Christians today who take a<lb />stand against abortion,<lb />exploitation of the poor or<lb />racism may be taking a moral<lb />stand, but in our polarized<lb />society many will read such a<lb />stand as politically partisan<lb />even when we do not intend it<lb />in such terms, The major<lb />difference at this point is that jf<lb />John Ts society did not<lb />recognize freedom of speech;<lb />publicly denouncing a ruler Ts<lb />character was essentially<lb />suicidal, Israel had a long-<lb />standing tradition exempting<lb />prophets from severe<lb />punishment for their speech-a<lb />rule that only the most vicious<lb />rulers broke, Unfortunately<lb />for John, Antipas proved to be<lb />such a ruler.<lb /><lb /></p>
