          <lb />Dorthty Dandridge<lb /><lb />She was a beautiful actress<lb />and singer whose star shone<lb />too briefly. Dorothy<lb />Dandridge, a fragile boned<lb />beauty with skin often<lb />described as  ocafe au lait ?,<lb />was sadly a victim of her own<lb />circumstances.<lb /><lb />She rose to the top of her<lb />profession with her first<lb />starring role and became the<lb />first black woman to receive<lb /><lb />an Academy Award<lb />nomination for Best Actress.<lb />But, just as fast as her<lb /><lb />success was achieved, so did<lb /><lb />it begin to fade.<lb />She knew it was hard, close<lb />to impossible, for a black<lb />actress to maintain a long<lb />running career in Hollywood<lb />because the roles were<lb />simply not there. She once<lb />said,  oIf I were white, I could<lb />capture the world ?.<lb />Dorothy had the drive and<lb />the talent to make it but the<lb />_ color of her skin held her<lb />back and her life soon began<lb /> a downward spiral which in<lb />= the end turned tragic.<lb /><lb />=Borothy Jean Dandridge was<lb />orn in Cleveland Ohio Ts City<lb /> oHospital on November 9,<lb />+1922. Her mother was an.<lb />raspiring actress named Ruby<lb />*Bandridge. Ruby had walked<lb /><lb />NSPLALE GALAN DSHS EULA E LEIS ES GELAT EATS SESE RCAC EE ELE Ei-9-4<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />SALAD<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />i)<lb /><lb />out on Dorothy Ts father,<lb />Cyrus, five months previous<lb />to Dorothy Ts birth taking her<lb />first child, Vivian, with her.<lb />Cyrus still lived with his<lb />mother and Ruby had come to<lb />the conclusion that he would<lb />never amount to anything and<lb />she resented the fact that they<lb />did not have their own home.<lb />Ruby was pleased to see that<lb />both of her daughters<lb />displayed a great talent for<lb />memorizing poetry and<lb />singing. A friend of Ruby<lb />named Geneva Williams soon<lb />moved in with them and<lb />Geneva became instrumental<lb />in teaching the girls singing,<lb />dancing and piano. The girls<lb /><lb />Were too young to realize it at<lb /><lb />the time, but Geneva was also<lb />their mother Ts lover. _<lb />As the talents of Dorothy and<lb /><lb />Vivian improved, Ruby and<lb /><lb />Geneva began to plan a future<lb />for themselves that they<lb />hoped would bring them fame<lb />and security. The girls would<lb />now be called The Wonder<lb />Children and they would be<lb />their ticket. They moved to<lb />Nashville and The Wonder<lb />Children were signed with the<lb />National Baptist Convention<lb />to tour churches throughout<lb />the southern States.<lb /><lb />With the help of black agent<lb />Ben Carter, the girls found<lb />work at various theaters in<lb />southern California. Their<lb />reputation grew and The<lb />Dandridge Sisters, as they<lb />were known known, landed<lb />their first big break when they<lb />received an uncredited cameo<lb />in the film The Big Broadcast<lb />of 1936. Subsequent small<lb />film roles followed until the<lb />summer of 1938 when their<lb />manager informed them that<lb />he had booked them in the<lb />prestigious Cotton Club in<lb />New York City. Dorothy had<lb />aspirations to succeed on her<lb />own and in the fall of 1940,<lb />her prospects looked<lb />promising. She landed a small<lb /><lb />but significant role in a low<lb /><lb />budget film called Four Shall<lb /><lb />Die. She then went on to<lb /><lb />small parts in Lady From<lb /><lb />Louisiana and Sundown. She<lb />was teamed with the Nicholas<lb />Brothers for a lively rendition<lb />of  oChattanooga Choo Choo ?<lb />in the film Sun Valley<lb />Serenade. Dorothy wanted<lb />desperately to be a film<lb />actress but she adamantly<lb />refused to portray<lb />stereotypical black roles such<lb />as maids.On September 6,<lb />1942, she married Harold<lb />Nicholas at the home of<lb />Harold Ts mother.<lb /><lb />She was offered the role of<lb />Melmendi in Tarzan T Peril in<lb />1951. Dorothy first balked at<lb />playing a jungle queen but<lb />after reading the script she<lb />didn Tt think it was that bad.<lb />Next up, she played an<lb />athlete Ts girlfriend in the low<lb />budget but successful The<lb />Harlem Globetrotters.<lb /><lb />MGM planned to make an all<lb />black drama called Bright<lb />Road.Her co-star was another<lb />up and coming actor named<lb />Harry Belafonte.<lb /><lb />Leading roles for black actors<lb />in Hollywood were very<lb />scarce so when Dorothy heard<lb /><lb />_ that an all black production of<lb /><lb />Carmen Jones was being<lb />planned, she knew this was<lb />the role she had dreamed of.<lb />Carmen Jones was an<lb />Americanized version of the<lb />Bizet opera with new lyrics<lb />by Oscar Hammerstein. The<lb />lead character, Carmen, is a<lb />sultry vixen whose<lb />independent inclinations to<lb />love her men and then leave<lb />them lead to her violent<lb />demise.Dorothy next attended<lb />the Cannes Film Festival with<lb />Preminger and then returned<lb /><lb />to the U.S. for more nightclub  "<lb /><lb />work as she awaited her next<lb />film offer. She did not have to<lb />wait long. She was wanted<lb />for the role of Tuptim in The<lb />King and I. Another highlight<lb />for her was Porgy and Bestin<lb />which her co-stars were Harry<lb />Belafonte and Sammy davis<lb />Jr. In 1965 she signed a new<lb />film contract, but her<lb />rebounding luck was short-<lb />lived  " she was found dead<lb />from an overdose of anti-<lb />detwessents:<lb /><lb />The Pimp and the<lb />Preacher<lb /><lb />by Gerald Gibbs<lb /><lb />After spending more than<lb />twenty years behind bars.<lb />Clyde Robinson, otherwise<lb />known as Pretty Boy, is<lb />being released from prison.<lb />When asked what he is going<lb />to do when he gets out, Clyde<lb />informs his fellow inmates<lb />that his plan is to go back to<lb />the only game he knows,<lb />running women a.k.a.<lb /> opimping ?. After much<lb />laughter, several inmates tell<lb />Clyde to update his game and<lb />get with the latest hustle.<lb />Clyde questions what that is<lb /><lb />_and is told by another inmate<lb /><lb />that it is those five magical<lb /><lb />words that no one can contest,<lb /><lb /> oT Tve been called to preach. ?<lb /><lb />After reading The Pimp and<lb />the Preacher, one may ask if<lb />this is just a scandalous novel<lb />or if it is possibly true.         <p>THE MINORITY VOICE NOV. 10 - 17.2006 Pgid<lb /><lb />CIVIL RIGHTS &amp; ORGANIZATION S IN PIT T<lb />COUNTY<lb /><lb />There are many worthy<lb />efforts that benefit greatly<lb />from publicity or any other<lb />means by which the<lb />maximum number of people<lb />are made aware of a project or<lb />concern. On the other hand,<lb />some things need to be dealt<lb />with discreetly and with a<lb />measured degree of exposure<lb />to public attention.<lb />Organization of local civil<lb />rights groups is one of those<lb />areas.<lb /><lb />For the last 40 years, the<lb />civil rights advocacy<lb />community in Pitt County has<lb />deemed media attention as<lb />one Of its T top priorities. This<lb />tendency has repelled<lb />multitudes of would be<lb />supporters, some of whom<lb />moved here from other areas<lb />or who simply don Tt feel the<lb />need to be validated by seeing<lb />- their names or faces in the<lb />media. It is for this reason that<lb />it is time for serious<lb /> ohousekeeping ? within our<lb />local civil rights organizations<lb />that are affiliated with<lb />national organizations. If for<lb />no other reason, this is needed<lb />to insure that local affiliates<lb /><lb />Operate in a manner consistent.<lb /><lb />with the by-laws that are<lb />usually prescribed by a<lb />national or state office. This |<lb />type of housekeeping is not<lb />glamorous nor might it be<lb />considered news. Yet, to be<lb />totally honest, if a local group<lb />lacks a reasonable degree of<lb /> conformity to a standard<lb />methodology, that group is<lb />merely using the name of a<lb />famous organization. As a<lb />result, the credibility and<lb />influence of the local-and<lb />national organization is<lb />diminished. At the local level,<lb />getting back to the basics of<lb />organization would be a<lb />tremendous asset. Basic<lb />organizational structure that is<lb />designed to assure debate,<lb />inclusion, fairness and<lb />transparency is not always<lb />welcomed.<lb /><lb />For the most part,<lb />standards for by-laws and<lb />constitutions of local civil<lb />rights organizations were<lb />developed over a long period<lb />of time by many dedicated<lb />and wise leaders who<lb />considered every possible<lb /><lb />scenario that local affiliates<lb /><lb />_ could possibly encounter.<lb /><lb />These rules were written so<lb />that local leaders need not<lb />start from scratch or use a<lb />trial and error style of<lb />leadership. Methods of<lb />communication are also part<lb />of such plans so that locals<lb />need not depend on the media<lb />as a main tool for getting<lb />information into the public.<lb />In Pitt County, many civil<lb />rights related matters are<lb />rushed into the press<lb />deliberately 4nd immediately<lb /><lb />only to go unresolved or<lb /><lb />defeated. It is almost<lb />impossible to recall any issue<lb />wherein a Pitt County civil<lb />rights organization actually<lb />prevailed or advanced the<lb />quality of life for the people<lb />that they exist to help; the<lb />poor and minority citizens.<lb />Yet there are plenty of news<lb />stories. If getting into the<lb />media is a goal then, mission<lb />accomplished. If results are<lb />intended, that Ts a different<lb />story.<lb /><lb />Many years ago, civil<lb />rights leaders in Durham,<lb />North Carolina found its T<lb />community in an almost<lb />identical situation as we see<lb />now in Greenville. Those in<lb />control of established<lb />organizations disregarded any<lb />rules that threatened their<lb />control and never allowed a<lb />re-organization according to<lb />by-laws. The reaction was the<lb />creation of The Durham<lb />Committee on The Affairs of<lb />Black People, which emerged<lb />as a very respected and<lb />credible civil rights<lb />organization to this day.<lb /><lb />Unlike in that community, in<lb /><lb />Pitt County, when a quote is<lb />rendered to the press, one<lb />never knows if it represents<lb />the thinking of the<lb />membership or of one or two<lb />vocal officers; usually it is the<lb />latter.<lb /><lb />People in the media<lb />business know exactly who<lb />enjoys being in the news and<lb />who will never say  ono<lb />comment ?. The media needs<lb />to sell advertising and<lb />increase exposure for itself,<lb />So it is doing what comes<lb />naturally and need not<lb />apologize for doing so. It is<lb /><lb />8<lb />0<lb /><lb />up to current civil rights<lb />organizations to examine why<lb />many good people avoid<lb /><lb />_ involvement with them. The<lb /><lb />norm is to dismiss the<lb />avoiders as people who don Tt<lb />care or worse while taking on<lb />a blacker-than-thou posture.<lb />The truly needed response is<lb />to privately hold operations<lb />up to a mirror while<lb /><lb />comparing operations to rules.<lb /><lb />In doing so, deviations from<lb />the by-laws will point to<lb />major reasons as to why<lb />rallies are small and meetings<lb />are poorly attended. Turning<lb />this corner will be<lb />uncomfortable for those<lb />whose self esteem is closely<lb />connected to civil rights. Yet,<lb />if this route is dismissed,<lb />there is no need to look<lb />further for serious hindrances<lb />to progress and self<lb />determination in the black<lb />community. The hindrances<lb />are not always the city, or the<lb />schools, the police, social<lb /><lb />a |<lb /><lb />service programs and the like.<lb />Such organizations are not -<lb />pledged to civil rights<lb />advocacy. Those _<lb />organizations that are need<lb />only be true to the guidelines<lb />and history of their<lb />forerunners in order to begin a<lb />new era of progressiveness in<lb />the civil rights arena of<lb />Greenville and Pitt County.<lb /><lb />The true measure of<lb />leadership is effectiveness<lb />toward change. All else are<lb />distractions from the fact that<lb />little has changed for the<lb />better. Being in the news or<lb />selling banquet tickets are not<lb />why civil rights groups should<lb />exist, nor should their<lb />existence revolve around such<lb />self serving distractions.<lb />Issues are sure to come. The<lb />question is whether or not our<lb />local organizations are up to<lb />making a difference or just up<lb />to making it to the press.<lb /><lb />Michael Garrett<lb /><lb />PEERLESS OLN ODOT EE BE ROBES RES NE AN os gg<lb /><lb />than double.<lb /><lb />(and state too).<lb /><lb />College 7.<lb /><lb />Foundation<lb />of North Carolina<lb /><lb />A State Income Tax Deduction.<lb /><lb />rr   e \ e<lb />lax-Free Earnings Continue.<lb /><lb />For details on North Carolina's 529 plan, visit<lb />CFNC.org/Savings or call'800-600-3453.<lb /><lb />More Great News about North Carolina Ts<lb />National College Savings Program<lb /><lb />Beginning in 2006, qualified taxpayers may deduct a portion of their contributions<lb />to North Carolina's 529 plan.           <lb />Leaders condemn d<lb /><lb />By: Melde Rutledge<lb />The Carolina<lb /><lb />Peacethaker<lb />The front of the old Guilford<lb />County Courthouse on W.<lb />Market Street was the scene<lb />of a press conference held on<lb />Nov. 02, where area black<lb />leaders deplored the<lb />execution of a mentally ill<lb />African American man<lb />stheduled on Dec. 01.<lb />Demonstrators argue that the<lb />mentally ill Guy LeGrande<lb />had an unjust trial and they<lb />aye pleading for North . |<lb />Garolina Gov. Mike Easley to<lb />cbmmute LeGrande Ts<lb />sentence to life in prison<lb />without parole.<lb /> oThe Kangaroo trial, the<lb /> conviction and death sentence<lb />given to Mr. LeGrande are<lb />réplete with racial bias and<lb />make us nothing less than<lb />unwilling parties to a<lb />I¢galized lynching scheduled<lb />for Dec. 01, ? said N. Carnell<lb />Robinson, chair of the NC<lb />Black Leadership Caucus, a<lb />statewide group of<lb />community activists, public<lb />officials, clergy and others<lb />who campaign for the equity<lb />of-black North Carolinians.<lb />Robinson said that only the<lb />gtand dragon of Klu Klux<lb />Klan would refer to<lb />LeGrande Ts sentencing as a<lb />show of justice.<lb />The NC Black Leadership<lb />Caucus has previously called<lb />for a moratorium against the<lb />death penalty in North<lb />Carolina. A formal letter<lb />Was sent to the governor last<lb />Week to request for<lb />LeGrande Ts clemency. He is<lb />currently held in Central<lb />Prison, located in Raleigh.<lb /> oWe besiege Governor Easley<lb />to grant clemency because the<lb /><lb />LeGrande conviction is<lb /><lb />_Teprehensible and marks not  "<lb /><lb />only our system of justice, but<lb />our humanity and our moral.<lb />integrity,  o Carnell added.<lb /><lb />An all-white jury sentenced<lb />LeGrande to death in 1996 in<lb />Stanly County, NC., for the<lb />shooting death of Ellen<lb /><lb />Munford, a white female. Her<lb /><lb />husband, Tommy Munford,<lb />hired LeGrande to help<lb />murder his wife for insurance<lb />benefits.<lb /><lb />_Mr. Munford, who is also<lb />white, was allowed to plead to<lb /><lb />second-degree murder, and<lb />received a life sentence after<lb />testifying against LeGrande.<lb />After LeGrande was<lb />sentenced, it was concluded<lb />by doctors that he suffered<lb />from psychosis;<lb /><lb /> oWhether he did it or not is<lb />not the question,  o Guilford<lb />County Commissioner Melvin<lb /> oSkip ? Alston said about<lb />LeGrande at the press<lb />conference.  oThe question is<lb /><lb />whether or not he got a proper -<lb /><lb />and fair trial. ?<lb /><lb />Alston also serves as the<lb />piedmont regional vice chair<lb />for the NC Black Leadership<lb />Caucus. Others on had at the<lb />press conference in a show of<lb />support included County<lb />Commissioner Carolyn<lb /><lb />Coleman, former Greensboro<lb /><lb />NAACP president Gladys<lb />Shipman, State<lb /><lb />Representative Pricey<lb />Harrison and members of the<lb />_ Faith Against the Death<lb /><lb />Penalty.<lb /><lb />There is documentation that<lb />LeGrande was out of touch<lb />with reality and lacked<lb />comprehension of the law<lb />during his trial. Amid<lb />LaGrande Ts trial, he fired his<lb />court appointed attorneys and<lb /><lb />~ 199078, t<lb /><lb />eath sentence ruling<lb /><lb />was permitted to represent<lb />himself  " even after standby<lb />counsel filed a motion ©<lb />suggesting that LeGrande was<lb /> oseverly  o mentally ill and not<lb />competent to represent<lb />himself.<lb />In addition, Robinson noted.<lb />that LeGrande Ts standby<lb />counsel were not allowed to<lb />tell the court that LeGrande,<lb />among other ailments,<lb />believed that he was receiving<lb />signals from Opray Winfrey<lb />and former CBS News<lb />Anchor Dan Rather.<lb />LeGrande also wore a<lb />Superman t-shirt to one of his<lb />court proceedings.<lb /> oThis is clearly not a man<lb />who should have been<lb />allowed to represent himself, ?<lb />Alston said. |<lb />After filing countless<lb />frivolous documents in court<lb />on his own, a federal judge<lb />ultimately appointed two<lb />lawyers to represent him for<lb />his appeal. However, the<lb />lawyers had to present with in<lb />federal court, and LeGrande Ts<lb />case was denied certification<lb />by the US Supreme Court.<lb />Those against LeGrande Ts<lb />death sentence point out the<lb />the prosecutor in the case,<lb />District Attorney Ken<lb />Honeycutt, is currently under<lb />investigation for hiding key<lb />evidence in two previous<lb />death penalty cases. Both of ©<lb />which have been overturned.<lb />All-white juries have<lb />sentenced atleast three other<lb />men of color, prosecuted by<lb />Honeycutt Ts office in the<lb /><lb />i déath:  oHoneycutt<lb />also gained an unsavory<lb />reputation with some people<lb />by wearing a gold lapel pin<lb />shaped liked a hangman Ts<lb /><lb />- race, and was exploited<lb /><lb />_ case in 2001, when Easley<lb /><lb />THE MINORITY VOICE NOV. 10- 17.2006 Pgil<lb /><lb />noose, and awarded thos<lb />pins to assistant DA Ts for<lb />winning death penalty cases |<lb />and to boost their moral.<lb />Robinson said that LeGrande<lb />was chosed by the<lb />prosecution because of his<lb /><lb />»<lb /><lb />fo.)<lb /><lb />because of his mental illness.<lb /> oThe prosecutor in this case<lb />lacked the integrity and the<lb />ethics that North Carolinians<lb />expect in our court system<lb />today, ? Alston said.<lb />Robinson pointed out that |<lb />Easley overturned a similar<lb /><lb />granted clemency to Robert<lb />Bacon based on the issue of<lb />racial bias and the unequal .<lb />treatment of Bacon and two<lb />co-defendants. Bacon, who<lb />was  oduped ? into killing his<lb />white girlfriend Ts husband,<lb />was sentenced to death by an<lb />all-white jury. The victim Ts<lb />wife, who was reported to<lb />have the mastermind, was<lb />sentenced to life.<lb /><lb /> oWe cannot be content with a<lb />law that has one set of justice<lb />for the weathly and the white,<lb />and another set for poor and<lb />the minorities, ?
