        <p>Tara Cole<lb />from front Page<lb /><lb />charged with aggravated assault<lb />for striking another homeless<lb />person, Jessie Masters, in the<lb />face with a bottle shortly before<lb />they came upon Tara asleep on<lb />the dock, Masters, 26,<lb />later jumped in the river and<lb />tried to save Tara. After<lb />questioning Webber and Dotts,<lb />who admitted to the crime,<lb />police investigators say the men<lb />confessed to driving to<lb />Nashville ospecifically to harass<lb />and assault homeless persons. ?<lb />Police Chief Rona Serpas called<lb />the actions of the two men<lb /> osickening ? and also expressed<lb />his extreme dismay at them<lb />choosing oto travel into our<lb />downtown area from other<lb />counties to bully the homeless. ?<lb />Detective Rick Winfrey.and<lb />other investigators, according to<lb />Serpas, were determined to<lb />identify the persons<lb />responsible for Tara Cole Ts<lb />death.<lb /> oI am very proud of their efforts<lb />and dedication, ? Serpas said.<lb />And although the homicide case<lb />of Tara Cole has been solved,<lb />advocates of the homeless all<lb />over the country say that her<lb />death and the continued<lb />persecution of homeless persons<lb />all across the nation are<lb />instigated by the negative and<lb />offensive attitudes<lb />generally held about the<lb />homeless.<lb />Clemmie Greenlee, director of<lb />the Nashville Homeless Power<lb />Project, is a non-profit<lb />organization of formerly<lb />and presently homeless<lb />individuals. The NHPP assists<lb />its clients in acquiring basic<lb />services such as food,<lb />clothing, and medical attention.<lb /> oPeople feel that the homeless<lb />are on the streets because of<lb />drugs and alcohol, o said<lb />Greenlee. oBut there are other<lb />situations that put people<lb />outdoors, and they are not .<lb />always in control of those kinds<lb />of circumstances. ? |<lb />Greenlee was personally<lb />acquainted with Tara, and most<lb />of the homeless or ostreet ?<lb />community in Nashville knew<lb />who she was. oTara would<lb />always be sitting alone by<lb />herself, and she didn Tt talk to<lb />anyone, ? said Greenlee. oShe<lb />would stay to herself, and we<lb />very seldom saw her come in for<lb />any type of<lb />services. |<lb /> oShe wore a blue, woolen skull<lb />cap pulled all the way down on<lb />her face to the top of her lip.<lb />And we tried to look out for her.<lb /> oYou had to go where she was.<lb /><lb />When someone brought her a<lb /><lb />~ meal, they would have to just go<lb /><lb />over and sit by her for a minute.<lb />Then, you just left the food<lb />there, and went on down the<lb />street.<lb /><lb />Tara would wait until you left,<lb />and then she would begin to<lb />eat. ? According to Mrs. Cole,<lb />Tara had dreams of producing<lb />music, and she wanted to make a<lb />difference in the world. She<lb />enjoyed singing and she even<lb />toyed around with the idea of<lb />playing guitar for a while. oTara<lb />was such a beautiful person.<lb />And when she was diagnosed<lb />with bipolar disorder, it was<lb />devasting, just devasting to her<lb />and all of us, ? said Mrs. Cole.<lb /> oShe just couldn Tt see herself<lb />taking medication for the rest of<lb />her life. And so, she would stop<lb />taking the meds. ? Mrs. Cole<lb />laments that Tara felt that her<lb />parents and her ver loving step-<lb /><lb />parents did not understand<lb /><lb />what she was going through.<lb /> oTara felf that we were happy<lb />with the way this world is<lb />because we work and are<lb />professionally successful, ? she<lb />said of her daughter. o But she<lb />found the world to be a very<lb />horrible place, brutal and<lb />unfeeling, and she dreamed of<lb />making an impact with the<lb />music she would someday<lb /><lb />- produce. ?<lb /><lb />Tara had been suffering with<lb />bipolar disorder for more than<lb />ten years. According to<lb />Mrs.Cole, she had<lb /><lb />been living in Nashville for the<lb />past five years. oThere were<lb />frequent hospitals stay, and<lb />when Tara would get out and<lb />have her medication, she would<lb /><lb />. Teturn home. She left and went »<lb /><lb />to New York City for a time<lb />before going to Nashville.<lb /> oAnd, ? says her mother, oshe<lb />has been arrested before, along<lb />with other homeless people who<lb />would not leave the premises of<lb />some place where they had been<lb />asked to leave. ? The young<lb /><lb />woman, killed on a pointless and-<lb /><lb />inhumane dare, would have<lb />turned 33 on Nov. 25.<lb /><lb />Although Tara Ts parents went to<lb />Nashville when they learned that<lb />the young woman who was<lb />pushed ff the dock was probably<lb />their daughter, they were spared<lb />the pain of having to identify the<lb />remains recovered from the<lb />river. oIt was 12 days before<lb />they actually recovered Tara Ts<lb />body. We were told that the<lb />police were 98% sure that it was<lb />our daughter. And by the time<lb />they pulled her from a barge<lb /><lb />7<lb /><lb />the body w was caught under, we<lb />had gone back home. oTara was<lb />positively idenitified with dental<lb />records because by the time she<lb /><lb />~ was actually recovered, there<lb /><lb />was not much left to the body. ?<lb />The grand jury in Nashville<lb />heard the testimony from<lb />homeless witnesses before<lb />bringing charges against the two<lb />homicide suspects. Several of<lb /><lb />those on the scene jumped in the .<lb /><lb />river to try and save the<lb />drowning woman. Police<lb />surveillance cameras were also<lb />key i in bringing the assailants to<lb />justice.<lb /><lb /> oSome of the men jumped in<lb />and tried to save Tara because<lb />they knew she couldn Tt float<lb />with all those heavy coats on, o<lb />said Greenlee. oWe just cried<lb />when we heard the testimony of<lb />the young men who did this.<lb /> oThe two men who rolled Tara<lb />into the river were going back<lb />and forth saying, You do it, T<lb />and the other would say, No,<lb />you do it. T Finally, Webber<lb />said, Oh f*** it, I Tll do it. T<lb /> oAnd he swung around on a pole<lb />near the place where Tara was<lb />lying. He was swinging through<lb />the air like Tarzan or a monkey,<lb />and he worked up a hard swing<lb />around the pole on the third try<lb />and pushed Tara into the river<lb />with his feet. ? Almost six<lb />million Americans reportedly<lb />suffer with bipolar disorder. It<lb />is also known as omanic-<lb />depressive illness. ?<lb /><lb />Some of the more destructive<lb />symptoms are : extreme<lb /><lb />. depression, delusions, hearing<lb /><lb />voices, and suicidal<lb /><lb />thoughts, and behavior.<lb /><lb />Paranoia often accompanies the<lb />condition, and victims may feel<lb />that loved ones<lb /><lb />and close friends are oout to get<lb />them. ? How does the family of<lb />someone like Tara recover from<lb />such a shocking and distressing<lb />death ?<lb /><lb /> oTt was very hard, but the Lord<lb />is helping us everday, ? says<lb />Tara Ts mother. o I-have-forgiven<lb />the young men who did this<lb />thing, and God will forgive them<lb />if they make a decision to follow<lb />Jesus Christ.<lb /><lb /> oClosure came for us when we<lb />were able to return home and<lb /><lb />_ hold a memorial service for<lb /><lb />Tara, ? said Mrs. Cole. oShe<lb />died in the faith, and so, we<lb />know that she is in the arms of<lb />her Savior. We will see her<lb />again one day in heaven. ?<lb /><lb />And for now, says Mrs. Cole,<lb />that is enough for those Tara left<lb />behind.<lb /><lb />LIFE<lb />PROPERTY<lb />AUTO.<lb />BUSINESS<lb />BOATS<lb />WORKPLACE<lb />CANCER<lb />ACCIDENT<lb /><lb />Greg Carter<lb />2419 South Charles St.<lb />_Greenville,NC27858<lb /><lb />row needs ee<lb /><lb />Phillips Brothers and<lb />Anderson Memorial Mortuary<lb /><lb />1501 W 14th Street<lb />_ Greenville.NC 27834<lb /><lb />Phillips Brothers and Anderson Memorial Mortuary<lb />WELCOMES Mr Donovan Phillips back to the people of<lb />Pitt County, Greenville and surrounding areas, "I have<lb />been given my second chance to offer my professional<lb />service to you once again through my affiliation with<lb /><lb />Phillips Brothers and Anderson Memorial Mortuary as<lb />mortician and pre-need counselor.<lb />To express my personal appreciation to those of you who have made this second chance<lb />posssible by your kindness, a discount will be given to the first 25 customers who come in<lb />and pre-arrange their funeral with us. !<lb />We Have a newly renovated facility, an updated fleet of cars, and a most courteous and<lb />professional staff to serve you. The executive<lb />committee of the Pitt County<lb />NAACP recently voted<lb />against the city Ts proposal,<lb />and Garrett cast the lone<lb />dissenting vote, according to<lb />chapter president Calvin<lb />Henderson.<lb /><lb />This week, the Pitt County<lb />Board of Commissioners<lb />voted 5-4 to support the City<lb />Council Ts call for naming the<lb />bypass for the Nobel Peace<lb />Prize-winning King, and<lb />Garrett said he agrees with<lb />that action.<lb /><lb />Garrett, who has been<lb />honored with awards himself,<lb />including the Pitt-Greenville<lb />Chamber of Commerce<lb />Citizen of the Year and Pitt<lb />County Black Civic Group<lb />Life Achievement Award "<lb />wouldn Tt offer an opinion on<lb />what motivates those<lb />embroiled in the current<lb />controversy.<lb /><lb /> oI have no idea, ? he said. oI<lb />wouldn Tt dare to try to give<lb />you the thoughts of somebody<lb />else. ?<lb /><lb />He does, however, offer an<lb />observation from his own<lb />experience.<lb /><lb /> oT have never had everything<lb />my way, and when people<lb />don Tt agree with my decision,<lb />it doesn Tt bother me, ? Garrett<lb />said. oI am living in a country<lb />called a democracy. Garrett said. oFolks<lb />... fussing is just part of<lb />human nature, whether state,<lb />local or international. ?<lb /><lb /> oWe'll get over it, ? he said.<lb /> oIt too will pass. ?<lb /><lb />T.
