          <lb />Minority Voice June, 1- 16,2006 pg2<lb /><lb /> " OPINION<lb /><lb />oe<lb />2<lb /><lb />We are devastated that,<lb />once again, the word of a<lb />young black woman has<lb />been casually dismissed in<lb />the media, a woman who<lb />according to the grand jury<lb />indictment was violated<lb /><lb />in the most heinous way.<lb />We are devastated that, as<lb />we wait for the indictment<lb />men to stand trial in court,<lb />we must watch her on trial<lb />in the media. In 2006, this<lb />is unacceptable. People<lb /><lb />of color have experienced<lb /> blame the victim T tactics for<lb />centuries when they accuse<lb />the powerful. These same<lb />tactics are routinely used<lb />against survivors of sexual<lb />assault women of all colors.<lb />Sexual assault must be a civil<lb />rights priority for all people<lb />of goodwill.<lb /><lb />Only 40 years ago, Blacks in<lb />America were dying for the<lb />right to be treated equally and<lb />then, as now, in many parts<lb />of this nation the ptess was<lb />used as a tool to distort truth,<lb />and to defame our leaders<lb />and innocent citizens. Yet it<lb />was in this same time that the<lb />courage and determination<lb /><lb />of the press to record truth<lb />helped awaken the conscience<lb />of this nation. We call row<lb />upon the media to reject spin<lb />and report truth. Today, as<lb />then, the truth will set us free.<lb /><lb />_ AIDS<lb /><lb />George Curry<lb />NNPS Analysis<lb /><lb />When a strange disease,<lb />later known as AIDS, was<lb />first detected at UCLA 25<lb />years ago, it was difficult<lb />to get African Americans<lb />interested in what was largely<lb />dismissed as oWhite gay<lb />disease. ? Today, however,<lb />AIDS is increasingly<lb />considered largely a oBlack<lb />disease ? that afflicts gays and<lb />straights, males and females.<lb /> oToday, more than half of all<lb />people living with HIV/AIDS<lb />and newly-infected with HIV<lb />each year in the United States<lb />are Black, ? That, says<lb />African American economist<lb />Thomas Sowell, is the<lb />conventional liberal wisdom,<lb />and it is dead wrong. Poor<lb />sputhern blacks acquired<lb />their aversion to work,<lb /><lb />b<lb />é<lb />,<lb /><lb />Reflections<lb /><lb />prone to violence, neglect<lb />of education, and other<lb />anti-social behaviors from<lb />the people with whom they<lb />lived most closely for a<lb />century " poor Southern<lb />whites, or rednecks. That<lb />culture has now become<lb />virtually synonymous with<lb /> oblack identity ?. If blacks<lb />are ever to join the social<lb />mainstream, says Sowell,<lb />they will have to stop using<lb />racism as an excuse for their<lb />failures. Instead, they will<lb />have to accept individual<lb />responsibility and give<lb /><lb />up their oblack redneck ?<lb /><lb />culture.<lb /><lb />Sowell further points out<lb />that, despite living in a<lb />racist culture, American<lb />blacks made great strides in<lb />education and other areas<lb />after emancipation. As late<lb />as World War I, northern<lb />blacks were out performing<lb />Southern Whites in armed-<lb />forces tests. Disaster<lb /><lb />came in the 1960s with a<lb />vast expansion of welfare<lb />programs, and a rising sense<lb />of victimization in the black<lb />community. These forces<lb />undercut the black redneck<lb />culture by encouraging<lb />single parenthood,<lb />destroying housing values<lb />in black neighborhoods, and<lb />creating counterproductive<lb /><lb />attitudes toward education.<lb />One writer comments<lb /><lb />about this book, calling it<lb />nonsensical and offensive.<lb />He went on to say that<lb />Sowell Ts stereotyping of<lb />poor blacks and poor whites<lb />is detestable. And his basic<lb />point has a giant hole in<lb /><lb />it: If poor whites could<lb />not afford slaves, then no<lb />slaves would be in their<lb />company. So how could<lb />the anti-social behavior of<lb />so-called rednecks rub off<lb />on blacks in the first place?<lb />William Raspberry, a black<lb />commentator and columnist<lb />for The Washington Post<lb />newspaper says in response:<lb /> oSowell says that the<lb />redneck culture imported to<lb />this country by immigrants<lb />from Northern Ireland and<lb />the Scottish Highlands<lb />permeated the South,<lb />becoming a developmental<lb />millstone for both blacks<lb />and whites. It Ts true that<lb />Sowell minimizes the effects<lb />of racism, which remains _<lb />a cancer in our society.<lb /><lb />But there Ts no longer any<lb />denying his insistence that<lb />blacks must take our destiny<lb />into our own hands, instead<lb />of dwelling on what was<lb />done to us in the past. ?<lb /><lb />Respectfully Submitted:<lb />Suejette A. Psalm<lb /><lb />139: 15-17 the word of God<lb />assures us that God ordained<lb /><lb />Our existence, even before our<lb />conception. So in case you<lb /><lb /> oforgot my sisters God does not<lb /><lb />make mistakes.<lb /><lb />Many have tried to find their<lb />purpose through many things,<lb />wrong male choices, wrong<lb />friends, drugs, wrong jobs<lb />choices and many other paths<lb />that lead them to everything<lb />but their purpose. First let Ts<lb />talk about purpose. In order to<lb />know the purpose of anything<lb />we must always go back to<lb /><lb />the creator of the thing for<lb />original blueprint or purpose.<lb />The creator God knows the<lb /><lb />-contentment for all of his<lb /><lb />creation lies in fulfilling the<lb />purpose for which they were<lb />created. It is living contrary<lb /><lb />to God Ts will for your life<lb /><lb />that will ultimately result in<lb />frustration, lack of fulfillment<lb />and most often self-abuse.<lb />Where purpose isn Tt known<lb />abuse is inevitable. Every one<lb />of us is in search of who we<lb />are and why we find ourselves<lb /><lb />over and over in the same<lb /><lb />situations. If we could just put<lb />our finger on the button within<lb />us and get the answers about<lb /><lb />ourselves we would by pass a<lb /><lb />lot of drama. Apart from God<lb />you will never get connected<lb />with you. It is God who created<lb />you, that means he wired you<lb />he set your emotions in place.<lb />He knows your strengths and<lb />your weaknesses. So why do<lb />we look everywhere else to be<lb />fulfilled. Think about it? You<lb />will realize that the very thing<lb />we look to be validated by is<lb />also looking to be validated.<lb /><lb />Your life message contains<lb />the essence of what you have<lb />lived for believed and strive to<lb />accomplish during the course<lb />of your lifetime. It Ts about your<lb />existence. Our life message is<lb /><lb />wv<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />usually the result of a collection<lb />of our life experiences, both<lb />positive and negative. Every<lb />event in our life, whether<lb />pleasant or unpleasant still<lb /><lb />. 9 , <lb />results in shaping us into the<lb /><lb />persons we are today. Only<lb />when we surrender situations<lb />even the painful and challenging<lb />situations upon the altar of<lb />God, can he resurrect them<lb />and caused them to result for<lb />our good.<lb /><lb />Your past is a rehearsal for<lb />your future. God<lb />is sovereign and he knew you<lb />before you knew yourself. He<lb /><lb />already knew the temptation<lb /><lb />you would face. He<lb />was eventually baptized in<lb />1987 with Grishath assisting.<lb /><lb /> oT still was a part of the gang<lb /><lb />even after I was baptized, ?<lb />Baldridge confesses. oI was<lb />still going to clubs in my<lb />wheelchair. But as I learned<lb />more about (Jesus)Christ, and<lb />as Steve continued to talk to<lb />me, I told him I wanted to get<lb />out of the gang and that I was<lb /><lb />tired of shooting at people and<lb /><lb />was tired to people shooting<lb /><lb />at me. So I laid down my flag<lb /><lb />(bandana) and was voted out<lb />of the Gangster Disciples. ?<lb />Baldrige finally got his<lb /><lb />life together arid avoided<lb /><lb />the deathtrap that snared<lb />some of his friends and the<lb />graveyard where they lay.<lb />With Grisham Ts persistence<lb />and Baldridge Ts newfound<lb />religious conversion, a<lb /><lb />new way of life began to<lb />unfold for the convert. He<lb />no longegfelt the urgge to<lb />gang-bag@y and no longer felt<lb />invincible, He proclaimed<lb />his discipleship only to<lb />Jesus Christand committed<lb />to saving the many girls and<lb /><lb />boys on the fast track to an<lb />eventual death. When the<lb />old Baldrige died, a new<lb />one emerged. What he Td<lb />taken from others, he began<lb />paying back trough PIANO,<lb />a nonprofit organiz-ation he<lb />started oto do for kids what<lb />this White cop did for me. ?<lb /><lb />PIANO, Baldrige explains,<lb />is a twofold program where<lb />he visits school, preferable<lb />alternative schools, and do<lb />a rap session with students.<lb /> oI Tm open and frank with<lb />them, ? he says. oI show them<lb />the bullet holes and scars.<lb />Secondly, I mentor them and<lb />take them to the hospital to<lb />see gun-shot victims and the<lb />blood. I also take them to the<lb />graveyard to see some of the<lb />people I grew up with. And |<lb />I let them talk to the guys<lb />on the streets who once sold<lb />drugs and are now homeless.<lb />Darryl Baldridge, Baldridge Ts<lb />40-year old brother, assists<lb />him with the program. oI Tll<lb />talk to every gang member<lb /> " if they Td listen, ? Baldridge<lb />says. oThese guys are getting<lb />messed up. These kids are<lb />being told to commit crimes<lb />because they won Tt spend<lb />that much time in jail. When<lb />they do go to 201 Poplar<lb />(Downtown jail), some of<lb />them get raped, catch the<lb />virus, and some of them turn<lb /><lb />gay. ?<lb /><lb />Gangs have flourished in<lb />Memphis since the 1970s.<lb />According to Shelby County<lb />Dist. Atty. Bill Gibbons and<lb />Shelby County Sheriff Mark<lb />Luttress, approximately<lb />15,000 gang members<lb />currently wreak havoc in<lb />Memphis and Shelby County.<lb />They estimate roughly 5,000<lb />are ruthless and hardcore,<lb />5,000 are less violent, and<lb />5,000 are wannabes looking<lb />for male bonding and<lb />camaraderie. oAlot of them<lb />join gangs because of money<lb />and protection, ? Baldridge<lb />says.<lb /><lb /> oWhether it Ts an established<lb />gang with national affiliation,<lb />or a small neighborhood<lb />gang, the young people<lb />in our community should<lb />understand that if you agree<lb />to join a gang there is a good "<lb />chance you will either end up<lb />in prison, or worse, end up<lb />getting killed at an early age,<lb /> o said Gibbons following the<lb />court Ts decision to try the six<lb />defendants who killed Taurus<lb />as juveniles rather than as<lb />adults in Criminal Court.<lb />Gibbons and Luttrell have<lb />each visited middle schools<lb />in Memphis and Shelby<lb />County warning active gang<lb />members and wannabes<lb />about the consequences<lb />of joining a gang and<lb />committing acts of violence.<lb />Nowadays it Ts harder to get<lb />out of a gang, Baldridge says.<lb /> oYou can get out by moving<lb />out of the city and don Tt let<lb />anyone know you were part<lb />of a gang, sever your tides<lb />completely, or experience<lb /><lb />cont, to back pg 14<lb /><lb />a ee es " . The<lb />13-member 1898 Wilmington<lb />Race Riot Commission,<lb />created in 2000 by legislation<lb />sponsored the late State<lb />Senator Luther Jordan [D-New<lb />Hanover], has spent the past<lb />year holding public hearings<lb />across the state, and collecting<lb />and confirming pieces of<lb />information through the Office<lb />of Archives and History in the<lb />N.C. Department of Cultural<lb />Resources to complete the<lb />document.<lb /><lb />At those public hearings, the<lb />commission also collected<lb />recommendations about what<lb />the General Assembly should<lb />do to address the social and<lb />economic impact the century-<lb />old white racist insurrection<lb />still has today on Wilmington Ts<lb />Black population.<lb /><lb />According to the executive<lb />summary, oThe report follows<lb />a chronological format,<lb />beginning with the Civil War<lb />and Reconstruction and ending<lb />with analysis of the impact of<lb />the riot and the Democratic<lb />Party Ts campaign of 1898 on<lb />African Americans in New<lb />Hanover County. Black men<lb />were able to vote as part of<lb />Reconstruction after the Civil<lb />War.<lb /><lb />Wilmington, the state Ts largest<lb />city then, was considered<lb /><lb />a shining example of black<lb />power, with numerous<lb />businesses and property<lb />owners, as well as elected<lb />officials in city government.<lb />Blacks outnumbered whites,<lb />and controlled what went on.<lb /><lb /> oThe overthrow or coup d T tat<lb />took place within the context<lb />of an ongoing statewide<lb />political campaign based<lb /><lb />on white supremacy, ? the<lb />commission Ts report says.<lb /> oAn armed overthrow of the<lb /><lb />legitimately elected municipal<lb /><lb />government. ?<lb /><lb />Powerful elite white racists,<lb />including Josephus Daniels,<lb />editor of the Raleigh News and<lb />Observer at the time, plotted<lb /><lb />to overthrow Wilmington<lb />government, and take the port<lb />city back from Black hands.<lb /><lb />Other major white newspapers<lb />across the state, including<lb /><lb />the Charlotte Observer and<lb />Wilmington Messenger and<lb />Morning Star, also fanned the<lb />flames of white insurrection<lb />and%tonspiracy against Blacks.<lb /><lb />Jack\Betts, columnist for The<lb />Charlotte Observer, wrote<lb />last December, oIn 1900 when<lb />the state disenfranchised most<lb />black voters by imposing a<lb />literacy test and a poll tax, the<lb />Observer said the move was<lb />the result of a struggle of the<lb />white people to rid themselves<lb />of the dangers of rule by<lb />negroes and the lower class of<lb />whites. ?<lb /><lb />A fiery editorial published by<lb />the Wilmington Daily Record,<lb />the Black newspaper then,<lb />regarding Blacks and white<lb />women, was used as the<lb />pretense for an angry white<lb />mob to go through the A frican-<lb />American community, killing<lb />people and burning down<lb />properties.<lb /><lb />The Black newspaper building<lb />was bumed to the ground, and<lb />the Wilmington City Council<lb />was taken over at gunpoint.<lb /><lb />New pictures, discovered<lb />recently that are in the final<lb />report, show owhere black<lb />citizens were killed in the<lb />violence that reigned in<lb /><lb />Joyner, a law professor at North Wilmington on Nov. 10, 1898,<lb /><lb />Carolina Central University Ts<lb />School of Law, told reporters<lb />during a Wednesday press<lb />conference at the Legislative<lb />Building. Black<lb />businesses and workers<lb />suffered economic decline... ?<lb /><lb />The report adds, oOrganizers<lb />of the coup instituted a<lb />banishment campaign,<lb />targeting political opponents,<lb />black and white, leading to the<lb />expulsion from the city of over<lb />twenty targeted individuals<lb />and a mass exodus of over<lb />2,100 others. Consequently,<lb />the Republican power base in<lb />Wilmington was destroyed. ?<lb /><lb />And untold numbers of<lb />Wilmington Blacks were killed.<lb /><lb /> oOne result of the Wilmington<lb />diaspora (the departure of<lb />African Americans from.<lb /><lb />the Port City, voluntary or:<lb />otherwise) was a decline<lb /><lb />in economic opportunity<lb /><lb />for Black citizens, ? the<lb />commission Ts report notes.<lb /> oAnalysis of statistical data<lb />indicates that Wilmington Ts<lb />Black businesses and workers<lb />suffered losses after 1898 in<lb />terms of job status, income, and<lb />access to capital. ?<lb /><lb /> oAfter 1898, Black-owned<lb />businesses suffered economic<lb />decline as some businesses<lb />closed or moved from the city Ts<lb />business district to traditionally<lb />black neighborhoods. ?<lb /><lb />Ever since then, Black<lb />economic and political power,<lb />along with the population in<lb />Wilmington and New Hanover<lb />County, has steadily eroded.<lb /><lb /> oWe are still under the shadow<lb />of this disfranchisement back at<lb />the turn of the century, ? Jeffrey<lb />Crow, deputy secretary of the<lb />N.C. Office of Archives and<lb />History, told The Charlotte<lb />Observer last December.<lb /><lb /> oThis is clearly an indictment<lb />of North Carolina government<lb /> " the Democratic and<lb />Republican parties, ? Prof.<lb />Joyner said. oIt impacted<lb />negatively the African-<lb />American community in<lb />Wilmington, but eventually<lb />throughout the state. From<lb />1898 to 1990, there was a<lb />political drought of A frican-<lb />Americans in [North<lb />Carolina]. ?<lb /><lb />He added that 1898 also lit the<lb />fuse for repressive Jim Crow<lb />racial segregation laws to<lb />spring up all across the South.<lb /><lb />Some of the recommendations<lb />made for the Legislature to<lb />consider included making<lb />sure the story of the 1898<lb />massacre is included in North<lb />Carolina history text books,<lb />and taught in the state Ts public<lb />school systems. Another<lb /><lb />recommendation was to include<lb /><lb />New Hanover County in the<lb />current forty counties covered<lb />by the 1965 Voting Rights Act.<lb />The Black population there is<lb />over 20 percent, but only one<lb />African-American serves on<lb /><lb />the county school board, and no<lb /><lb />WOoOOW s0¥<lb />1340 AM RADID<lb />Cis cemville, NC Bese<lb /><lb />almost the beginning.
