        <p>Minority Voice May 12 - 26,2006 pg5<lb /><lb />Min. Farrakhan issues a warning to Black New Yorkers<lb /><lb />by SAEED SHABAZZ<lb />Special to the AmNews<lb /><lb />NEW YORK - This last<lb />Sunday Hon. Min. Louis<lb />Farrakhan appeared on New<lb />York Ts popular radio show<lb /> oOpen Line on WKRS-FM<lb />98.7, and issued a stern<lb />warning to Black New<lb />Yorkers concerning the need<lb />to do-for-self and the need to<lb />be prepared for upcoming<lb />_ disasters such as Hurricane<lb />Katrina. He.also cleared the<lb />air concerning his remarks<lb />while appearing at Tavis<lb />Smiley Ts.<lb /> oState of Black America <lb />forum in February; and his<lb />position on what is happening<lb />in Darfur, Sudan.<lb />Farrakhan Ts warning was that<lb />Blacks do not realize that<lb />America no longer needs<lb />them. oWhite folk have let us<lb />go, except for the few that are<lb />in corporate America. The few<lb />that can fit in this society, <lb />warned the Muslim leader.<lb /> oThe government has said<lb />wipe them out (Blacks in<lb />America), and we are on a<lb />death march. It was clear<lb />according to some observers<lb />that the leader of the Nation<lb />of Islam was continuing with<lb />very clear and explicit<lb />instructions for the direction<lb />~ that Blacks must take.<lb />James Mtume, one of the<lb />show Ts hosts asked Farrakhan<lb />for a summation of his recent<lb />trip to Cuba; and for the need<lb />for Blacks to see themselves<lb />in the global paradigm.<lb />Farrakhan said that Katriria<lb /> ounmasked the naked racism<lb />and ineptitude of government;<lb />and the non-caring attitude of<lb />government toward the<lb />suffering of Black people. <lb />And since Cuba was only 90<lb />miles away it made sense to<lb />go there to learn what they<lb />know about surviving disaster.<lb /> oCuba has been mobilized for<lb />47 years to withstand disaster.<lb />There have been category five<lb />hurricanes that have hit the<lb />island and not one life was<lb />lost; Farrakhan stated.<lb /> oTt is written in the Qur Tan<lb />that Allah will bring one<lb />calamity after another until the<lb />enemy is laid low, so<lb />Hurricane Katrina is only one,<lb />but there are many more to<lb />come, warned Farrakhan. He<lb />said that Blacks as the people<lb />suffering the most in America<lb />must be prepared to save<lb />themselves. He added that a<lb />documentary was being made<lb />of the recent trip; and he<lb />wanted to share what has been<lb />learned with churches and<lb />organizations. oWe also want<lb />to work with city, state and<lb />the federal government, so<lb />that when the disasters strike,<lb />as they will, we can make sure<lb />that there is not the loss of<lb />life, the tremendous loss of<lb />property and dislocation that<lb />we saw with Hurricane<lb />Katrina. <lb />Returning to the global<lb />concept, Farrakhan said that<lb />Blacks must understand that<lb />the poor of the world saw<lb />Black America, after the 1995<lb />Million Man March, as hope<lb />for them, because they knew if<lb />we united, we could form a<lb />political base of power that<lb />could change, not only<lb />domestic policy, but influence<lb />foreign policy. oAnd now the<lb />doors to the world are open to<lb />us but we must be prepared<lb /><lb />now to go in and take<lb />advantage of the fact that we<lb />are an international people, a<lb />global people - we are not a<lb />minority - we are a majority<lb />on the planet and the whole<lb />world is looking to Black<lb />America because we grew up<lb />in the world leader. But what<lb />we need is a knowledge of<lb />self, Farrakhan stressed.<lb />Judge Bob Pickett said that -<lb />many in the Black community<lb />throughout the nation have<lb />been critical of Black leaders,<lb />hip in general. oWhat is your<lb />view of Black leadership in<lb />America? asked Judge<lb />Pickett. oI think the best of<lb />leadership is yet to come, <lb />answered the Muslim leader.<lb />He then shared with the radio<lb />audience something told to<lb />him by the Hon. Elijah<lb />Muhammad concerning a<lb />force in the universe where a<lb /><lb /> star 1s being born in the<lb /><lb />darkness. That force that is in<lb />the darkness will bring that<lb />star into view. oWhat that is<lb />telling us is that we will never<lb />be bereft of leadership. And<lb />new leadership is required<lb />among Black people, because<lb />there is a sickness in our<lb />leadership, he said. oI don Tt<lb />want to put myself apart from<lb />that leadership, because none<lb />of us has done all we should<lb />do, Farrakhan admitted.<lb /><lb />He added that the quality of<lb />Black leadership that won Tt<lb /><lb />do anything offensive to<lb /><lb />whites must be over thrown;<lb />and a quality, ofleadership "<lb />must arise, that owill never<lb /><lb /> disrespect and be ungrateful <lb /><lb />to.the masses of Black people.<lb />A leadership that will never<lb />compromise principle because<lb />the former slave masters and<lb />their children are in the<lb />house. Both hosts explained<lb />to Farrakhan the many calls<lb />they received concerning a<lb />comment that the minister<lb />allegedly made during his<lb />appearance in Houston<lb />concerning Smiley Ts book<lb /> oCovenant With Black<lb />America. oI want the world<lb />to know that Farrakhan would<lb />never disrespect the work of<lb />so many that went into<lb />producing this marvelous<lb /><lb />book, he said. oBut, what I<lb /><lb />said was misunderstood - and<lb />sometimes when you hear a<lb />man and you think<lb />emotionally he is disrespecting<lb />your work, you don Tt really<lb />hear him, the minister<lb />continued. oI guess the shock<lb />of what I was saying caused<lb />that type of disturbance, he<lb />added.<lb />Critics of Farrakhan have said<lb />that he said, oburn the house<lb />down referring to America.<lb /> oNow what I said was; no, no,<lb />no, don Tt be a fireman, let the<lb />house burn. I didn Tt mean to<lb />upset you to think that I<lb />would burn down the house<lb />wh our children in it. The<lb />sctipture says that we are born<lb />sin and shaped in inequity,<lb />: our spiritual house is also<lb />on fire, but from the ashes<lb />God said, I am going to make<lb />a new heaven and a new earth<lb />and you will be a new creature<lb />in Christ. That is what<lb />Farrakhan was referencing, he<lb />stressed.<lb /> oNow, when you make a<lb />covenant, a covenant is a<lb />solemn agreement between<lb />people who are T declaring their<lb />integrity to live up to that<lb />which is in the covenant, <lb /><lb /> have become Arabized and<lb /><lb />Farrakhan said what Black<lb /><lb />; , who didn Tt care about<lb /> arabian se h wee we people must examine is the lynching; and don Tt care about<lb /> oAre the leaders making a root reason why so many what Eiipaes eee<lb />covenant with Black America whites are crying tears for . don Tt you be deceived that<lb />Darfur and not the suffering in they care about what is<lb /><lb />that we will never sell them<lb />out for friendship and favor<lb />with our former slave<lb />masters? Farrakhan asked.<lb /><lb />He added that the covenant _<lb />couldn Tt be made with Black ~<lb />America before oyou make a<lb />coventnt with God. <lb /><lb />happening in the Sudan, he<lb />argued. oBlack people wake<lb />up to the deceit, Farrakhan<lb />state<lb /><lb />the Democratic Republic of<lb />the Congo or Palestine. oSo<lb />what I say to Black people,<lb />when the former slave masters<lb /><lb />Turning his attention to the<lb /><lb />Hamp ton» )<lb /><lb />Sudan and the reported <lb /><lb />atrocities in Darfur, Farrakhan Ss }<lb /><lb />said that the medfa was omy fit _ "<lb />reporting that some Arabs in "<lb /><lb />the Sudan were enslaving oo | ,<lb />Africans, so naturally this « We Leve Having you Here <lb />breeds hatred in Black oom yur<lb /><lb />Ameri inst Arabs. |<lb />Farrakhan said the ruth is that Complimentary On the House hot breakfast<lb />the Arabs over time have Complimentary Wireless High Speed Internet<lb />mixed their blood with<lb /><lb />Convenient to shopping,restaurants and entertainment<lb /><lb />Africans of the North and they Complimentary Airport / Hospital Shuttle (9am-Spm)<lb /><lb />nor ; Champion Ts Fitness Center Pass<lb />Islamic. oAnd the same racist<lb />poison that has poisoned the Same Day Dry Cleaning<lb />blood stream of Islam has Free Local Calls<lb />made the Arab North feel Outdoor Pool<lb />superior to the African South. 100% Satisfaction<lb />The same game that the<lb /><lb />enemy has played here and<lb />else where in Africa is being<lb />played in the Sudan in<lb />reference to skin color, <lb />revealed Farrakhan.<lb /><lb />252-355-2521<lb /><lb />3439 S$. THE 64th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF MR &amp;<lb />geevscatea MURS GARRETT - MANY CONGRATULATIONS<lb /><lb />Durham needs to have its<lb /><lb />brand of hatred added to the<lb />* mix.<lb /><lb />Those of us who live and<lb />work in Durham, however<lb />have a different perspective.<lb />We are faced with two<lb />overwhelming tasks. First,<lb />we must help provide the<lb />social equilibrium necessary<lb />for our criminal justice system<lb />to work. We have said all<lb />along that we had to face this<lb />investigation, face whatever<lb />facts it reveals, and face the<lb />Justice those facts demand.<lb />We have said this case ought<lb />not be decided in the court of<lb />public opinion polluted by<lb />defense lawyer tactic, spin,<lb />innuendo, or sound-bite<lb />sensationalists. This case<lb />cannot be decided between<lb />the front page and sports page<lb />of the paper but must be<lb />decided between judge and<lb />jury without any swaying of<lb />power, prestige, or privilege.<lb /><lb />There has been an indictment<lb />now there must be a trial "a<lb />fair trail and an equal playing<lb />field. Let the facts lay where<lb />they lay. Let the truth be<lb />what it is. And let the justice<lb /><lb /> " and punishment fit whatever "<lb />the final examination of facts<lb />demand. If we<lb />- extend an invitation.<lb /><lb />» We have also had commu-<lb /><lb />- nication with our own<lb />: Chairman Julian Bond and<lb />- CEO Bruce Gordon. We are<lb />- assured this group that has<lb />; come to Durham uninvited "<lb />: although they have said<lb />- Mayor Bill Bell and the |<lb />* NAACP were consulted about<lb />: their visit, that is not true.<lb /><lb />- The NAACP is not opposed<lb />: to working with allies in the<lb /><lb />, : CONT PG8...<lb /><lb />4<lb />a<lb /><lb />e222 @ @ ese a's<lb /><lb />2-P PMF SEP PTF P®eseeesse s<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb /> oom<lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>Minority Voice May 12- 26,2006 _pg8°<lb /><lb />NAACP from pg7....<lb />struggle for Justice and<lb />Community. Indeed, we are<lb /><lb />reaching out beyond our<lb />traditional friends, because the<lb />crisis in our community is so<lb />profound. And we are not<lb />opposed to agitators "outside<lb />and inside. Two weeks ago we<lb /><lb />- invited community leaders to<lb /><lb />join a joint strategy and over<lb /><lb />40 church and community<lb />organizations responded. But<lb />agitation without organization<lb />is wrong. And agitation with<lb />a message of hate toward<lb />other minorities or anyone is<lb />wrong. You cannot fight hate<lb />with hate. You cannot fight<lb />misogyny and sexual violence<lb />with vigilantism.<lb />Constitutionally anyone or any<lb />group is free to exercise their<lb />1* amendment rights of free<lb />speech and can come and go<lb />in America as they please and<lb />we support this. But no one<lb />has the right to use the name<lb />of the NAACP on flyers or<lb />suggest its support without<lb />express written consent and<lb />commitment to its already<lb />established goals. What we<lb />do not need is provocation,<lb />which takes the focus away<lb />from the clear goals, which<lb />have already been established<lb />by the justice community here.<lb />We must remember in our<lb />community blacks and whites,<lb />clergy, and males and females,<lb />Duke students and North<lb />Carolina Central University<lb />students have already come<lb />together to call for and stood<lb />for justice without<lb />unnecessary polarization of<lb />one another. This is the path<lb />we must continue.<lb /><lb />_ Allow me to conclude by<lb />repeating the principles we<lb />spelled out in our first<lb />statement on this crisis, about<lb />a month ago.<lb /><lb />We, the NAACP bring to this<lb />crisis the perspective of these<lb />historical experiences and<lb />wisdom. How we proceed will<lb />have great impact upon our<lb />ability to remain a community<lb />and meet the demands of<lb /><lb />Justice. The following are<lb />steps, which ought be taken to<lb />insure justice, integrity, and<lb />healing. The greatest divider<lb />or unifier of the community<lb />will be the perception of how<lb />the process will be carried<lb />out. That is why from the<lb />beginning we laid out a ten-<lb />point position and demand for<lb />the community.<lb /><lb />First, we must denounce any<lb />code of silence, which seeks<lb />to inhibit ascertaining the *.<lb />facts.<lb /><lb />Second, we must have<lb />deep compassion and concern<lb />Jor the survivor and challenge<lb />any attempts to demean or<lb />destroy her rather than to<lb />seek and ascertain the truth.<lb /><lb />Third, we must ensure<lb />the D.A. 8 investigation be<lb />completed thoroughly and<lb />promptly and that serious<lb />consequences be meted out if<lb />the allegations are proven.<lb />These allegations include:<lb />sexual violence/gang rape,<lb />racial slandering/hate crimes,<lb />underage alcohol use, and<lb />any prior history of racial<lb />bigotry and intimidation all<lb />must be fully investigated. We<lb />do not want a rush to<lb />judgment or a delay of<lb />Justice. .<lb /><lb />Fourth, Duke should<lb />be conducting its own<lb /><lb />thorough investigation: Who<lb /><lb />was at the party? Who<lb />violated Duke Ts Code that<lb />night? How many times had<lb />they violated the:law or<lb />Duke's Codes before?<lb /><lb />the legal process to insure<lb />Justice is carried out in this<lb />investigation without special<lb />privilege or treatment to<lb />anyone. Our position as an<lb />organization, interested in<lb />civil rights and community<lb />justice is that the<lb />investigation of allegations<lb />are fair, meticulous,<lb />comprehensive, aggressive,<lb /><lb />and thorough. And that<lb />justice be rendered based on<lb />what the facts reveal.<lb /><lb />Sixth, those students<lb /><lb />and other community leaders<lb /><lb />who are calling for justice<lb />and fairness in the<lb />investigation must not be<lb />wrongly described as a<lb /> olynch mob no matter how<lb />zealous one seeks to defend<lb />their client.<lb /><lb />Seventh, those who<lb />want to ensure justice must<lb />insist there are no short cuts<lb />to justice. We demand that<lb />the alleged perpetrators have<lb />rights to be protected. We<lb />must also be prayerful for<lb />whoever committed these acts<lb /><lb />_ because whoever did is<lb /><lb />suffering from a great<lb />sickness of the spirit and<lb /><lb />hatred for humanity.<lb /><lb />Eighth, we must face<lb />the truth and the justice that<lb />the truth demands.<lb /><lb />Ninth, we must<lb />consider in the wake of all<lb />that has and will occur, how<lb />we repent, repair, restore, and<lb />move forward. We must not<lb />engage in retaliatory<lb />violence. Our faith must insist<lb />that hope can still be rise out<lb />of hurt, what is meant for evil<lb />can yet be turned to good,<lb />and out of tragedy can still<lb />come triumph.<lb /><lb />And tenth, we must<lb />recognize that in a moment<lb />like this moment we need the<lb />guidance of God and a moral<lb />compass which keeps us focus<lb />that only the truth can set us<lb /><lb />free.<lb /><lb />ott<lb /><lb />ey<lb /><lb />SHOE REPAT<lb /><lb />SHOE CARE PRODUCTS<lb />LEATHER WORK<lb /><lb />TIMBERLAND CLEANING<lb /><lb />NC EDUCATIONAL LOTTERY 5, oSS<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb />me<lb /><lb />ER STAND.<lb /><lb />WITH ONE AGENT |<lb /><lb />YOU DESERVE TWO DISCOUNTS.<lb /><lb />Boe ineuie your thorree &amp; car with Alietebe. arsed | car<lb />- " help you sawe om both cies. <p>Minority Voice May 12 - 26,2006 pg9<lb /><lb /> ocaste SALUTE TO MRS BEATRICE MAYE 7<lb /><lb />(NAPSA)-Just because a prod-<lb />uct says it's a facial cleanser or<lb />moisturizer, doesn't mean it's<lb />the right product for you. Many<lb />people think that the same skin<lb />care regimen works as well on<lb />African Americans and Hispan-<lb />ics as it does on non-ethnic skin<lb />types.<lb /><lb />But according to experts like<lb />Dr. Angelo P. Thrower, a.der-<lb />matologist specializing in eth-<lb />nic skin conditions, such skin<lb />presents unique challenges that<lb />have only recently begun to be<lb />addressed. He offers these an-<lb />swers to some frequently asked "<lb />ethnic skin care questions:<lb /><lb />Q: What are some prob-<lb />lems specific to ethnic skin?<lb />A: Ethnic skin is prone to<lb />a unique set of problems, rang-<lb />ing from dark spots and skin<lb />discoloration, to acne, shaving |<lb />bumps and bumps on the neck.<lb />Q: What's the first step in<lb />determining how to care for my<lb />skin? .<lb /><lb />A: Start by finding out<lb />what type of skin you have.<lb />There are three general skin<lb />types: Oily skin, which is shiny<lb />and may feel bumpy; normal/<lb />combination skin, which has a<lb />few areas that are oily and oth-<lb />ers that are slightly dry; and dry<lb />skin, which tends to have matte<lb />finishes because of an accumu- "<lb />lation of dead skin. Oily skin has<lb />many large pores, normal/com-<lb />bination skin has a moderate<lb />number of visible pores and dry<lb />skin has few, if any, visible<lb />pores.<lb /><lb />Q: . Do skin conditions af- |<lb />fect black and white skin differ-<lb />ently?<lb /><lb />A. Sometimes. Black skin:<lb />tends" to"exapperate thiee skin's* <lb />response to disease by produc-<lb />ing follicular excitements, or<lb />hair bumps, that are dry and<lb />rough to the touch.<lb /><lb />Q: How do I choose a<lb />treatment? |<lb /><lb />A: Look for products<lb />made for your specific skin<lb />type. For instance, Dr. Thrower<lb />developed a line of products for<lb />ethnic skin called Heritage Skin<lb />Care. It's specially formulated<lb />to treat common problems in<lb />skin-of-color, such as melasma,<lb />or dark patches and dark spots.<lb />The line is also formulated to<lb />treat dry skin and acne-a disease<lb />common in both black and /<lb />white skin, but that reacts dif-<lb />ferently to treatment, depend-<lb />ing on a person's skin color.<lb /><lb />Q: Whatcan happen to the<lb />skin if the wrong product is<lb />used?<lb /><lb />A: " Most people's skin isn't<lb />oily around the eyes, on the<lb />corner of the nose, and around<lb />the mouth. If those areas are<lb />exposed to drying products on<lb />ethnic skin, irritation, skin dis-<lb />coloration and bump formation<lb />is likely.<lb /><lb />OQ. If I have dark skin, do I<lb />still need to be careful of the<lb />sun?<lb /><lb />A: " Even black skin tans<lb />and burns and must be pro-<lb />tected. It's a good idea to use<lb />sunscreen with an SPF of at<lb />least 15 every time you go out-<lb />side, whether it seems sunny or<lb />not.<lb /><lb />For more information, visit<lb />www. heritageskincare.com.<lb /><lb />Doctors suggest using<lb />treatments that are specially<lb />formulated for ethnic skin.<lb /><lb /></p>
