I Tve been arguing for<lb />a decade that The South had<lb />finally  owon ? the Civil War<lb />they T ve been re-fighting all<lb />along, when conservative,<lb />modern-day-segragationists<lb />from the South took over the<lb />leadership of both the House<lb />and Senate in 1996. The<lb />Southern Dixie-crats, from<lb />whatever party, dominated the<lb />White House through much of<lb />the 20th Century. But there Ts<lb />a new movie, some kind of<lb />staged documentary, in which<lb />the fimmaker reckons what<lb />life would be like today, if The<lb />South never lost. Of course<lb />we know that the South never<lb />truly  olost ?. The  o40 acres<lb />and a mule ? proposal was<lb />vetoed by the President. No<lb />land was forfeited by Whites.<lb />The Reconstruction period<lb />was shot down with the "s<lb />Hayes-Tilden Compromise,<lb />Federal troops were removed<lb />from the South, there was no<lb />protection for the newly freed<lb />slaves from the armed<lb />plantation owners " the<lb />Confederates, the Rebels, the<lb />ones who committed treason<lb />against the United States of<lb />America. The slaves were<lb />politically disenfranchised and<lb />violently forces into lives as<lb />sharecroppers and tenant<lb />farmers by the same ones who<lb />had been their slave masters.<lb />But I digress.<lb /><lb />So this new film:  oC.S.A.<lb />Confederate States of Ameri-<lb />ca, ? picks up as though there<lb />had never been that uncondit-<lb />ional surrender at Appomattox<lb />But the 4 in this, and other<lb />myopic, White supremacist<lb />viewpoints, is that Black folks<lb />are nothing more than objects<lb /><lb />for measuring the greater<lb />humanity of White folks. The<lb />film is said to have modern<lb />day faux-TV-commericals for<lb />runaway slaves, using exagg-<lb />erated, racist slang and<lb />sterotypes. Excuse me.<lb /><lb />Has anyone considered what<lb />the lowly slaves would have<lb />been doing during that 135 or<lb />so years from the Confederate<lb />military victory? Considering<lb />that salve rebellions took<lb />place in this country going<lb />back to the 17th Century, and<lb />considering that the Black<lb />population would have been<lb />even more concentrated and<lb />numerically superior, the<lb />Confederates today would<lb />have to be obsessed at all<lb />times with security.<lb /><lb />Let Ts remember that by 1962<lb />in South Africa, the<lb />Sharpeville Massacre had<lb />already taken place, and<lb />armed rebellions were<lb />spreading through Africa<lb />against White colonial rule.<lb />There were Mau Maus in<lb />Kenya, fighting a war against<lb />Th<lb /><lb />th<lb />6 tag<lb />\. Se<lb /><lb />most Saglainly also infected<lb />the Blacks in the Confederate<lb />States of America, wouldn Tt it<lb />have? When then, would<lb />Black Confederate subjects<lb />have picked up the gun<lb />against their White masters?<lb /><lb />What kind of Baptist<lb />preacher might Martin Luther<lb />King Jr. have been had be<lb />been born into the<lb />Confederate State of Georgia,<lb />instead of the United States of<lb />Georgia? Might the need and<lb />the circumstances have made<lb />of Martin Luther King, Jr., a<lb />preacher like Nat Turner, had<lb /><lb />he grown up in the Confed-<lb />erate State of Georgia. And<lb />what would the people of<lb />Birmingham have been willing<lb />to face if they were living in<lb />the Confederate State of<lb />Alabama. Those seem to me,<lb />to be more realistic appraisals<lb />of contemporary history that<lb />might have been, had the<lb />outcome of the Civil War<lb />gone in favor of the slavers.<lb /><lb />Which brings me to the<lb />contemporary American world<lb />view, and why I believe White<lb />people tend to go along with<lb /><lb /> T Pres. George W. Bush, even<lb /><lb />though he has bungled<lb />everything he Ts touched, and<lb />spent everyone Ts nest-egg<lb />doing it.<lb /><lb />Mr. Bush has responded<lb />precisely the way practically<lb />every thinking White Man in<lb />America would have<lb />responded in his position. It Ts<lb />the  oWhite  o thing to do!<lb />Like the premise of the movie<lb /> oC, S. That will make<lb />the folks back home more<lb />secure. That Ts the Bush<lb />Doctrine. It Ts the White thing<lb />to do in order to increase<lb />homeland security.  And that,<lb />I Tm afraid is wrong, and out<lb />of syne with the tide of |<lb />history.<lb /><lb /> omoral values ?. Who can be<lb />against moral values? And<lb />polling showed that political<lb />support for such issues as<lb />school prayer and the Ten<lb /><lb />~ Commandments in public<lb /><lb />places, and opposition to<lb />abortion and homosexuality<lb />are quite popular among some<lb />African American and Latino<lb /><lb />-Teligious conservatives.<lb /><lb />The political tactic was<lb />obvious. Such social issues<lb />will attract and unite a<lb />segment of the African<lb />American and Latino religious<lb />communities with white social<lb />conservatives around a<lb /> ovalues ? theme. At the same<lb />time, these  owedge issues ?<lb />will weaken black economic<lb />liberals who are -<lb />overwhelmingly Democratic.<lb /><lb />At election time, economic<lb />and social liberals join forces<lb />to nominate Democrats that<lb />will challenge the Republican<lb />Parties T philosophy of<lb />weakening democratic<lb />government, their policy of<lb />tax cuts wasteful military<lb />spending.<lb /><lb />But by not meeting their<lb />base constituent Ts economic<lb />needs, and by making choice<lb />and<lb /><lb />April 26, 2006<lb /><lb />Contacts:<lb /><lb />Ethelene Stover, ( T74)<lb />252-321-3278<lb />Jeffrey E. Barbara<lb />Jorda, one of the first Black ~<lb />women from the South,  "<lb />elected to Congress.<lb /><lb />And let us not forget the older<lb /><lb />Reflections<lb /><lb />Pharmacy was established.<lb />Thanks to the generosity of<lb />northern friends of Shaw, the<lb />lecture rooms-and laboratories<lb />were soon stocked with<lb />supplies and anatomy models.<lb /><lb />In January 1885, the 25-bed<lb />Leonard Hospital opened its<lb />doors to the sick and poor of<lb />the local black community and<lb />to the medical students of<lb />LMS. Clinical instructions,<lb />increasingly recognized as an<lb />essential component of good<lb />medical education, was now<lb />provided. Unfortunately for<lb />patients and students, for<lb />those months when school<lb />was out of session, the hospital<lb />Closed. Again, as with all<lb />other aspects of LMS Ts devel-<lb />opment, private northern<lb />philanthropy and local black<lb />fund-raising through fairs and<lb />community appeals financed<lb />the school Ts program. The<lb />American Baptist Home<lb />Mission Society allocated to<lb />money.<lb /><lb />The first LMS Ts graduation<lb />Class was in 1886. Six<lb />students had successfully<lb />completed their studies and<lb />exams. Practically all secured<lb />their medical licenses with a<lb />high degree of expectancy,<lb />and were prepared to enter<lb />into practice. Dr. Lawson<lb />Scuggs was Valedictorian and<lb />main speaker of the class. He<lb />practiced medicine in Raleigh<lb />and assumed teaching respon-<lb />sibilities at LMS Dr Marcellus<lb />T. Pope also practiced in<lb />Raleigh. His home is now a<lb />historic preservation site<lb />operated by the State<lb />Archives. All of his personal<lb />papers, letters and medical<lb /><lb />books from LMS are stored<lb />there. (I might mention here<lb />that one of his two daughters ,<lb />Ruth,taught Home Economics<lb />in Kinston and resided at my<lb />home while there. Ruth<lb />passed away a few years ago<lb />at age 96.)<lb /><lb />Dr. Savitt Ts article shows a<lb />picture of the first graduating<lb />class. Several have all-white<lb />features, as was the pattern of<lb />slaveholders who fathered<lb />children with their slaves.<lb /><lb />Finally, LMS closed because<lb />of underfinancing, because no<lb />individual or organization was<lb />ever willing to step in and<lb />rescue it from its debts,<lb />deficits, and decline. LMS<lb />needed an endowment and<lb />operating capital to pay<lb /><lb />professors, buy equipment,<lb />maintain teaching and clinical<lb />laboratories, and provide for<lb />the other usual expenses of a<lb />modern medical school.<lb />Instead, the school had to<lb />draw off funds from the rest<lb />of the university, reversing the<lb />growth of the larger<lb />University,Shaw University.<lb />So having satisfied a need for<lb />36 years and producing a<lb />cadre of black doctors (some<lb />400) LMS passed quietly from<lb />existence. Of the black<lb />medical colleges of the late<lb />19th and early 20th centuries,<lb />only Meharry and Howard<lb />survive today. ~<lb /><lb />Acknowledgment to Dr.<lb />Todd Savitt for permitting this<lb />article to be published (with<lb />my own personal<lb />interjections)<lb /><lb />Respectfully submitted,<lb /><lb />Suejette A. Our society and our<lb />churches, particularly, accent<lb />our youth for the most part.<lb />Advertisements are aimed at<lb />young people, products are<lb />sold to keep people looking<lb />young, and fashions have a<lb />youthful appeal. Churches<lb />promote and use the young<lb />regularly. All of that is not so<lb />terrible, if we don Tt overlook<lb />the older folk in our midst.<lb />Just give them a visit, give<lb />them a telephone call, a ride<lb />to Sunday school and church<lb />if there Ts no bus, let them<lb />make some telephone calls to<lb />remind members of some<lb />delinquent deed or give them<lb />the opportunity to serve on a<lb />committee.<lb /><lb />Worlds of wisdom and know-<lb />ledge are trapped up in these<lb />older folk.<lb /><lb />You may do well to listen to<lb />them and they Tre so depen-<lb />dable. Be a good<lb />listener.<lb /><lb />Let Ts listen, be calm and<lb />avoid the loudness, the<lb />yelling, the music in the<lb />streets from young men<lb />carrying juke boxes (to be<lb />heard); instead, read the<lb />newspapers, listen to the news<lb />on radio &amp; TV. Then<lb />you'll have something to talk<lb />about other then people.<lb /> oSmall minds discuss people. ?<lb /><lb />Five Reasons Why Single<lb />Parenting Is So Tough<lb />1. There Ts not enough money.<lb />Paychecks for young people<lb />are small, jobs insecure, child<lb />support not very reliable.<lb />2. There Ts not enough time.<lb />Between jobs, daycare and<lb />child trade-offs, the available<lb />parenting hours can disappear.<lb />3. There Ts not enough outside<lb />support. War windows and<lb /><lb />needs one, sometimes the<lb />other. Ultimately, any parent<lb />is just one person. Not surprisingly, no<lb />one in the Bible speaks more<lb />about the resurrection than<lb />Jesus. In John 11:25-26, for<lb />example, He said ,  oI am the<lb />resurrection and the life. He<lb />who believes in Me, though he<lb />may die, he shall live. And<lb />whoever lives and believes in<lb />Me shall never die. ?<lb /><lb />Jesus was saying that although<lb />those who believe in Him may<lb />die physically, the real person,<lb />which is the soul and spirit,<lb />will never die. In John 5:24,<lb />Christ taught,  oMost<lb />assuredly, I say to you, he<lb />who hears My word and<lb />believes in Him who sent Me ©<lb />has everlasting life, and shall<lb />not come into judgment, but<lb />has passed from death into<lb />life, ?<lb /><lb />Prior to the death,<lb />burial, resurrection of Jesus<lb />Christ, all people who died<lb /><lb />were taken to a place known<lb />as Sheol or Hades. This place<lb /><lb />THE PROMISE OF<lb />ETERNAL LIFE<lb /><lb />had two compartments<lb />separated by a large chasm or<lb />gulf. The first section was<lb />known as  oparadise ? of the<lb /> oplace of comfort. ? This is<lb />where the Old Testament<lb />saints would go following<lb />death. On the other side of<lb />the great gulf was the  oPlace<lb /><lb />- of torment ? where those who<lb /><lb />died without faith were held<lb />(see Luke 16:26). Ever since<lb />Jesus T resurrection, believers<lb />have not gone to the  oplace<lb />of comfort ? in Sheol, but<lb />rather have been instantly<lb />transported to heaven to be<lb />with the Lord(see Corinthians<lb />5:8). Nonbelievers, on the<lb />other hand, are still taken to<lb />the  oplace of torment ? in  "<lb />Sheol/Hades..<lb /><lb />The word  oheaven ? appears<lb />nearly 600 times in the Bible. ?<lb />I can refer to three different<lb />places: 1). the atmospheric<lb />heaven or sky;2).the planetary<lb />heaven where the sun, moon,<lb />and stars reside, or 3). the<lb /><lb />_ third heaven, which Paul<lb /><lb />speaks of in 11 Corinthians 12,<lb />where God dwells with His<lb />angels and His people. This is<lb />where believers who died are<lb />today.<lb /><lb />Everything that is truly<lb />precigus to us as Christians<lb />will be in this third heaven,<lb />including the triune God, our<lb />loved ones who are believers,<lb />our inheritance, our<lb />citizenship and our eternal<lb />rewards. In other words,<lb />everything of eternal value<lb />will be there.<lb /><lb />When the rapture occurs, we<lb />who are believers will<lb />instantly receive our new,<lb />immortal, resurrected bodies.<lb />At the rapture, Christ will<lb />come to take us home to the<lb />Father Ts house in heaven<lb />(John 14:1-4), Many of us<lb />look forward to that glorious<lb />day when we see the unfath-<lb />omable magnificence of<lb />heaven, be reunited with loved<lb />ones and come face to face<lb />with Jesus, our Savior.<lb /><lb />There are many things that<lb />will take place following the<lb />rapture.         <p>Minority Voice Apr. 28 - May 15 2006 pg4<lb /><lb />By Susie Clemons<lb /><lb />Just recently the Wall<lb /><lb />Street Journal (WSJ) ran the<lb /><lb />discussion fetching article,<lb /><lb />Teaching Americans to<lb />Behave Abroad. According<lb />to the non-profit entity,<lb />Business for Diplomatic<lb />Inc., who will be providing<lb /><lb />one day training seminars<lb /><lb />for American business<lb />travelers, this is not<lb />necessary but mandatory<lb />instruction. America must<lb />salvage its down trodden<lb />image currently held by<lb />foreigners. What with<lb />American military forces on<lb />the ground in Iraq, this is<lb />not good news.<lb /><lb />At this article some big<lb />name companies, among<lb />them Lowe Ts and American<lb />Airlines, are signing up<lb />employees for classes aimed<lb />at improving the image of<lb /><lb />~ the  ougly American, ? which<lb /><lb />WSJ used to refer to anti-<lb />U.S. sentiments abroad.<lb /><lb />It just so happens the<lb />Japanese think that<lb />Americans should know<lb />better than to hold eye<lb />contact for more than a<lb />second or two. Not to be ©<lb />out done, the Greeks think<lb />Americans should know that<lb />to them a wave hello or<lb />goodbye is an insult. It Ts<lb />conceivable that neither<lb />foreign country could care<lb />less that direct eye contact<lb />(stare-downs) or waving is<lb />about as apple pie and<lb />Chevrolet as they get "they<lb />just know they don Tt want<lb />any parts of it.<lb /><lb />Before teaching Americans<lb />how to behave abroad one<lb />must, however, first tackle<lb />the congenital problem of<lb /><lb />Good Manners<lb /><lb />Begin at Home<lb /><lb />rudeness on the home front.<lb />Right many Americans are<lb />rude, spoiled and selfish.<lb />Sociologists have, as of late,<lb />documented research that<lb /><lb />._ Shows rude American parents<lb /><lb />are to blame for their rude<lb />American children.<lb /><lb />To think that in a time of war<lb /><lb />Americans are accused of<lb />flying thousands of miles<lb />from home, on business, to<lb />talk about American pride,<lb />brag about personal wealth<lb />or about Husseins T arrest,<lb />(albeit the point man, of no<lb />fewer than 7 feet tall, still<lb />very much has his liberty and<lb />possibly residence at the<lb />Watergate Hotel in<lb />Washington D.C), is<lb />unthinkable.<lb /><lb />Either way, if the bad<lb />manners story made WJS,<lb />then perhaps foreigners have<lb />had enough of American<lb />bravado, gall and the<lb />arrogance of ultra important<lb />people who assault officers<lb />in uniform when asked to<lb />show identification.<lb /><lb />That news worthy foul ups<lb />stream across the tube at<lb />every turn exposing a<lb />President out to prove that<lb />he Ts the decider, and too<lb /><lb />revealing how Exxon makes _<lb /><lb />off with billions in price<lb />gauging profits " surely the<lb />Japanese and the Greeks<lb />understand the swell of<lb />American pride.<lb /><lb />Then again, to rethink that<lb />posture, do they really care<lb />that some Americans who,<lb />dressed in Armani suits and<lb />ride around in chauffeured<lb />Benz Ts, with regularity steal<lb />pension funds from their<lb />employees? Surely they feel<lb />even less distress for the ugly<lb />Americans whe blatantly<lb />betray the trust of people<lb />they T ve been elected to<lb />serve.<lb /><lb />Furthermore, it Ts down right<lb />classist and egregious to<lb />think foreign governments<lb />have a problem with<lb />pedophiles in priest collars,<lb /><lb />or elected officials who leave<lb />storm tossed tax paying<lb />citizens to bake in the sun or<lb />who force elderly citizens to<lb />trade food for medicine,<lb />visiting their country.<lb /><lb />That aside, no doubt foreign<lb />heads of state are not<lb /><lb />~ concemed with travelers<lb /><lb />who say they Tre coming to<lb />visit for the weekend, yet<lb />end up staying forever with<lb />one goal in mind: change<lb /><lb />everything.<lb /><lb />Could it be that our friends<lb />across the water are saying<lb />to the ugly American<lb />business class travelers: 1).<lb />We understand your place as<lb /> Super Power T, but when<lb />visiting our country you<lb />must treat our people with<lb />respect 2). you must have<lb />some idea about our culture<lb /> " not everyone wants to<lb />speak English 3). leave your<lb />clanky-ti-clank apple pie<lb />Chevrolets at home and 4).<lb />please stop bragging about<lb />your oft times stolen wealth,<lb />lastly 5). use your stolen<lb />wealth to invest in real<lb />educational curriculums for<lb />the thousands of high school<lb />graduates unable to compete<lb />in an economy that the ugly<lb />American flaunts as<lb /> oglobalism ?<lb /><lb />No doubt some Americans<lb />have less than desirable<lb />manners, but for these home<lb />is about bragging rights,<lb />American pride and oft times<lb />ill-gotten wealth. In absence<lb />of the means to engage air<lb />seeps out of the puffery<lb />much like it seeps out of the<lb />chest cavity upon death.<lb /><lb />Overhauling ones ideology<lb />from time to time is to be<lb />expected. The question is<lb />will the overhaul make<lb /><lb />things worse or better for the<lb />ugly American or for<lb />foreigners fresh out of<lb />hospitality?<lb /><lb />If you have an opionion you Td<lb />like to share send comments<lb />to opinionsandtalk<lb />@yahoo.com<lb /><lb />(252) 823-5129<lb /><lb />Mutts<lb /><lb />Scotland Neck, NC<lb />(252) 826-4406<lb /><lb />Fa<lb /><lb />| wa<lb /><lb />Po Se.<lb /> A ivi iw<lb />HeUEVOL h<lb /><lb />y) (252) 749.3256<lb /><lb />Ff Floral Creations<lb /><lb />i<lb /><lb />Scotland Neck, NC<lb />(252) 826-5094<lb /><lb />Candidate for the NC House 8th Dis<lb /><lb />_ Top 20 gospel/praise &amp; worship<lb />Music, Clergy/Choir Robes, Church Supplies,<lb />Books, Bibles, Greeting Cards, Gifts, Wedding &amp; Social<lb />Invitations, Songbooks, Sunday School &amp; Vacation Bible<lb />School Materials and much morell}<lb />Sunday School Commentaries Now Available!<lb />Open Wednesday through Friday 12-6pm<lb />a Saturday 10am-4pm |<lb />CORNERSTONE CHRISTIAN BOOKSTORE<lb />1095 ALLEN ROAD.           <lb />Sheila Ingram Ministries Now In Greenville, NC<lb /><lb />Where Are My Sisters?<lb /><lb />Sheila Ingram<lb /><lb />After relocating to Greenville<lb />N.C. from a world very different<lb />than the one I Tve come to know<lb />in the past 2 months, I realize<lb />although I wake up each<lb />morning to the birds chirping a<lb />melody that sounds light and<lb />fresh I continue to have a<lb />burning desire to share, i impart<lb />and get connected to the<lb />mainline of sharing hope love<lb />and sincere concern for my<lb />sisters, those I know by name<lb />and those that my destiny will<lb />connect with. For so many<lb />years growing up in the heart<lb />of Harlem N.Y.C. I found<lb />myself challenged with<lb />opportunities, distractions and<lb /><lb />derailed dreams. As I found my<lb /><lb />way through a cycle of up Ts<lb />downs, turnarounds tragedies<lb />and triumphs here I am rerouted<lb />to a strange land called<lb />Greenville North Carolina A<lb />place I would have bet in my<lb />B.C. days (Before Christ) that<lb />I would never be in. But if you<lb />are one who continues to seek<lb /><lb />direction and success-you will<lb />come to realize sooner or later<lb /><lb />hopefully sooner that your story<lb />has already been written by the<lb />master. It just somehow doesn Tt<lb />click for some of us until we<lb />come to the end of ourselves<lb />and finally surrender to the one<lb /><lb /> who has manufactured us. And<lb /><lb />because he holds the key to all<lb />of our dreams and aspirations<lb /><lb />~ it would only make sense to<lb />. Surrender to his will for our<lb /><lb />lives. One day I realize I had to<lb /><lb />~ stop running into myself and run<lb />into God. In doing so I was<lb /><lb />greatly challenged to change my<lb /><lb />- lifestyle and thinking, separate<lb />myself from people, places and<lb /><lb />things.<lb /><lb />Life Ts circumstances often<lb />result in a series of events that<lb />speak death to every vision and<lb />dream God has placed within<lb />you. Negative thoughts are<lb />strongholds assigned to<lb />smother and kill the divine<lb />purpose within. The natural<lb />carnal mind refuses to release<lb />you from past and present hurts.<lb /><lb />Being a woman you can find<lb />yourself wearing so many hats<lb />in a day that one day you stop<lb />and realize you can Tt find<lb />yourself. People places and<lb />things have found a way to<lb />erase you and replace you with<lb />things that only pull on you<lb />finding yourself giving out and<lb />never receiving in. It's time to<lb />move on and deal with every<lb />thing that has held you captive.<lb />Being a prisoner in your own<lb />skin is not your purpose for life.<lb />There is nothing you have done<lb /><lb />that should bring you down.<lb /><lb />within your own being. You<lb />who are victims of abuse and<lb />neglect can get back up again<lb />and regain the power you have<lb />over your life, as you allow God<lb />to repair and restore your<lb />brokenness.<lb /><lb />You can make it. Just as I was<lb />challenged for years to fight for<lb />my peace you will be too. But<lb />the great thing is you will win.<lb /><lb />You Can Get BackUp ~<lb /><lb />Don T t live in denial. Denial will<lb />choke the life out of you. Stop<lb />playing the blame game and get<lb />up again. There is always time<lb />to complete your life Ts<lb />purpose, no matter what your<lb />age, size, skin color education<lb />bank balance is. Regardless of<lb />your past, you can make it. If<lb />low self-esteem and poor self-<lb />perception have held you<lb /><lb />captive, I encourage you to T<lb /><lb />look at what God says about<lb />and not what man thinks or<lb />says. Keep your eye on the<lb />prize. Learn to embrace<lb />yourself, weaknesses as well as<lb />strengths. Stop running into<lb />yourself and rut into God. I<lb />use tO Tun into myself all the<lb />time until I decided to run into<lb />God. How are you running into<lb />your self today, is it with anger,<lb />fear, or unforgiveness? So establishes the abstract for the Urban League Ts essay on<lb />Prisons in their 2006  oThe State of Black America Report. T Written by reputed journalist (and<lb />" former head of  Emerge T magazine) George Curry,  oRacial Disparities Drive the Prison Boom, ?<lb />_ Offers an in depth analysis of several studies, culminating in<lb />&amp; the point that not only is prison big business, but blacks in this<lb />country help to fuel it.<lb /><lb />oe 68 ek eee ee ae<lb /><lb />| Prison populations have seen a<lb />explosively in the 1990s, mostly . due to the  oWar on Drugs T<lb />| policy instituted by President Ronald Reagan. By the time the<lb /> turn of the century rolled around, the prison and jail population<lb />| reached 2.1 million people. The total of 581,000 arrests in 1980 nearly tripled to a record high of<lb />almost 1.6 million by 1997. The United States has 100,000 more persons behind bars for drug<lb /><lb />: eum a Offenses alone than the entire European Union has incarcerated  " and the EU is larger than the<lb />bag  "" U.S. by 100 million people.<lb /><lb />spectacular boom, growing<lb /><lb />| Moreover, Black men especially do not bode favorably in this social justice analysis. Black men<lb />are arrested at higher rates and they are sentenced to do longer time. For instance, it was found<lb /><lb />| that of the sentences issued in 12 crime categories in the State Courts, sentences for black males<lb />| were longer than white males in all of them. The proportions of Black men arrested and<lb /><lb />| incarcerated for drug offenses is in gross disproportion to their actual numbers in this country.<lb /><lb />If one were to read between the lines, then, one knows that more than simply losing a very large<lb />and viable segment of the black community, the bi-products of prison include public health crises<lb />such as tuberculosis and HIV infection; joblessness; poverty; loss of political power, and a<lb />vicious cycle of these problems being perpetuated through generations.<lb /><lb />Free Financial Aid Information<lb /><lb />For Students &amp; Parents<lb /><lb />® figura out the financial ald process<lb /><lb />® find Information about scholarships and grants<lb /><lb />® save money on education loans for studants and parents<lb />@ talkto a financial ad wb<lb /><lb />® complete aid forns oniing<lb /><lb />CFNCorg<lb />College<lb /><lb />Helping You Plan, Appi os Foundation<lb /><lb />and Pay for Collage of Nerth Caredina<lb /><lb />~ "ainnoo twee<lb />me on ihe<lb />Se eee die-hhe CIN LH Cintggs ew tee, ane<lb /><lb />wa<lb /></p>

        <p>Minority Voice Apr. 28 - May 15 2006 pg8<lb /><lb />Brown Seeks<lb /><lb />==. ANNUAL NAACP BANQUET<lb /><lb />Brown Seeks Historic :<lb />Political Win with House Seat = ;<lb /><lb />Safer communities, educa-<lb />tion and a stronger job market<lb /> is what Democratic candidate<lb />Derek K. Brown pledges to<lb />-Martin and Pitt county voters.<lb />Brown Ts victory would be<lb />historic. He would become<lb />the first African American to<lb />hold the legislative seat<lb />specifically carved out for<lb />minority voter representation<lb />by the U.S. Department of<lb />Justice in the mid-eighties.<lb />When first established, the<lb />district 8 voting bloc included<lb />all of Pitt, Greene, Martin and<lb />Edgecombe counties. The late<lb />Linwood Mercer was the first<lb />to occupy the seat followed<lb />by current incumbent Edith<lb />Warren. For the 2006<lb />election, District 8 has been<lb />reapportioned to only include<lb />Martin county and portions of<lb />Pitt.<lb /><lb />With a recent campaign<lb />headquarters grand opening in<lb />Martin County, Brown has<lb />been relentless in his effort to<lb />let the voters know that he is<lb />hard at work on the campaign<lb />trail. His political opponent "<lb />the incumbent, retired<lb />educator and principal, Edith<lb />Warren " has held the<lb />legislative post since 1998.<lb />In an earlier cited statement<lb />Brown is quoted as saying<lb />that he was not running<lb />against Mrs. Warren, but that<lb />he was running for the people.<lb />With close ties to the<lb />community and region, Brown<lb />looks forward to bringing<lb />much needed improvement<lb />down east. Furthermore, he<lb />believes that the some of the<lb />basic requirements to ensure<lb />area growth have either been<lb />overlooked or down right |<lb />disregarded. During a candid<lb />interview Brown is quoted as<lb />saying,  othis is about the<lb />people, making their lives<lb />better and down east<lb />stronger. ?<lb />Brown acknowledges that the<lb />lack of sustained jobs<lb />creation, educational<lb />resources as well as the<lb />slowness of infrastructure, to<lb />points east of interstate 95,<lb />have not been all that it could.<lb />There is tremendous room for<lb />improvement. Improving<lb />upon these circumstances to<lb />the good of all down<lb />easterner Ts is just what I<lb />intend to do, he said.<lb />Similarly, Brown concedes<lb />that time spent as legislative<lb />council, to former<lb />Congressman Frank Ballance,<lb />allows him the skill and<lb />discipline necessary to<lb />develop and maintain strong<lb />relationships with state<lb />leaders; moreover, the<lb />altruism needed to keep his<lb />ear to the concerns of his<lb />constituents. Pitt County<lb />native, Brown, is the son of<lb />area veteran dentist Hazel<lb />Brown and attorney Earl<lb />Brown. A practicing attorney<lb />for 10 years, Brown currently<lb />serves as assistant district<lb />attorney for Prosecutorial<lb />District 6-B domestic violence<lb />unit, inclusive of Hertford,<lb />Bertie and North Hampton<lb />Counties. Derek Brown was<lb />educated at the North<lb />Carolina School of Math<lb />ndScience, North Carolina A<lb />T State University and<lb />awarded a Jurist Doctor from<lb />Campbell University School<lb />of Law<lb /><lb /></p>

        <p>Minority Voice Apr. 28 - May 15 2006 pgl4<lb /><lb />Endangered<lb /><lb />crisis among young black men<lb />can Tt be totally blamed on<lb />Bush Ts dubious fiscal and<lb />economic policies. During the<lb />Clinton era, when the<lb />economy was booming, the<lb />unemployment rate for young<lb />black males was still double<lb />and in some parts of the<lb />country triple that of white<lb />males. At the same time, state<lb />and federal cutbacks in job<lb />training and skills programs,<lb />the brutal competition for<lb />low- and semi-skilled service<lb />and retail jobs from<lb />immigrants and the refusal of<lb />many employers to hire those<lb />with criminal records have<lb />sledge-hammered black<lb />communities.In fact, before<lb />the big run-up in black male.<lb />unemployment in the last few<lb />years, the California Assembly<lb />Commission on the Status of<lb />the African-American Males<lb />reported that four out of 10<lb />felons entering California<lb />prisons were young black<lb />males, and less than half of<lb />lower-income black males<lb />under 21 lived in two-parent<lb />households. The study was<lb />done in California, but almost<lb />certainly a similar pattern<lb />would be found in other poor<lb />urban communities<lb />nationwide. It Ts true that many<lb />employers refuse to hire<lb />young black males due to<lb />racial fears and ignorance. It Ts<lb />also true that many young<lb />blacks feed that fear and<lb />ignorance by their own<lb />actions. The studies made<lb />only passing mention of that.<lb />The urban riots of the 1990s<lb />reinforced white fears that all<lb />young black males are<lb />inherent drive-by-shooters,<lb />gang bangers, drug dealers,<lb />are lazy, have foul attitudes,<lb />are chronic underachievers<lb />and eternal menaces to<lb />society. When some young<lb />blacks turned to gangs, guns<lb />and drugs and terrorized their<lb />communities, that seemed to<lb />confirm whites T worst fears.<lb />The explosion of gangster rap<lb />and the spate of Hollywood<lb />violence-themed ghetto films<lb />have convinced even more<lb />Americans that the thug<lb />lifestyle is the black lifestyle.<lb />They have ghastly visions of<lb />the boys-in-the-hoods heading<lb />for their neighborhoods next.<lb />No matter whether a young<lb />black is a Rhodes scholar,<lb />National Science medal<lb />winner or junior achievement<lb />candidate, they could be<lb />tagged as a gangster. Many<lb />young black men reinforce the<lb />damaging racial stereotypes<lb />by aping and exulting the<lb />thuggish bluster and behavior<lb />of gangster rappers. This<lb />further bolsters the racially<lb />tinged suspicion among some<lb />employers that all young<lb />blacks must be criminal and<lb />derelict. That does not and<lb />should not excuse job<lb />discrimination, however.<lb /><lb />Researchers also pointed to<lb />the high number of miserably<lb />failing inner-city public<lb />schools as partly responsible<lb />for the slide of young black<lb />males.
