          <lb />By George E. Curry<lb />NNPA Columnist<lb /><lb />Last Saturday, I celebrated a<lb />homecoming. I was invited to<lb />address the opening session<lb />of an 8-week Urban Jountal-<lb />ism Workshop, sponsored by<lb />the Washington Association<lb />of Black Journalists. Two<lb />decades ago, I served as<lb />founding director of the<lb />workshop.<lb /><lb />Next year will mark the 30th<lb />anniversary of the St. Louis<lb />Minority Journalism Work-<lb />shop, a program that I helped<lb />create and served as found-<lb /><lb />Marian Wright Edelman<lb />As tax season approaches,<lb />the Children Ts Defense<lb />Fund is helping to spread<lb />some important good news<lb />about tax credits and free<lb />tax preparation help for<lb />working families. Many of<lb />the country Ts working poor<lb />may not know they are<lb />eligible for the Earned<lb />Income Tax Credit (EITC),<lb />arefundable tax credit for<lb />people who work full- or<lb />part-time but earn low<lb />wages. These are the hard<lb />working low- to moderate-<lb />income families who are<lb />playing by the rules but still<lb />struggling to stay ahead.<lb /><lb />James Clingman<lb /><lb />They conceived him, they<lb />created him, they sustained<lb />him, they supported him, and<lb />now he has turned on them.<lb />We can break out our<lb />popcorn and Mary Jane<lb />candy because just like the<lb />old Frankenstein monster<lb />movies we used to watch, the<lb />latest version of Frankenstein,<lb />known as Frankenbush,<lb />shows the dreaded monster<lb />turning on his creators. That's<lb />right; those metal things that<lb />protrude from Frankenbush Ts<lb />neck have been charged by<lb />hundreds of lightning strikes<lb />and now, because he has so<lb />much power, he doesn Tt have<lb />to obey his masters any more.<lb />The Frankenbush monster<lb />thumbed his nose at his<lb />conservative creators by<lb />threatening to cast his first<lb />veto ever on the shipping<lb />ports deal. Dr. Frankenstein<lb /><lb />ing director before moving to<lb />Washington. With the assistance of<lb />the New York Association of Black<lb />Journalists, I served as founding<lb />director of a similar workshop there<lb />after I left Washington. In all, about<lb />15 workshops around the country<lb />are patterned after the St. Louis<lb />model.<lb /><lb />Over the years, hundreds of high<lb />school students who sat through<lb />Saturday sessions have become<lb />professional journalists. I call them<lb />my journalism Be-Be Kids  " they<lb />don Tt die, they multiply. They<lb />include: Ann Scales, an editor at the<lb />Boston Globe; Marcia Davis, an<lb />editor at the Washington Post;<lb />Everett Mitchell, editor of the<lb /><lb />Good tax news<lb /><lb />This federal credit can generate a<lb />cash refund for them of as much<lb /><lb />as $4,400, and it can be even<lb />more in states that offer a<lb />supplemental state Earned<lb />Income Tax Credit. In addition,<lb /><lb /> the Child Tax Credit can be<lb />-worth up to $1,000 per child for<lb /><lb />some working families. More<lb />than 21 million workers collected<lb />billions of dollars in EITC<lb />refunds in 2003; and those<lb />families were able to use that<lb />money to help cover key ex-<lb />penses like rent, utilities, food,<lb />medical bills, child care, and<lb />even to put a down payment on<lb />ahome. The EITC is the most<lb />effective work support and anti-<lb />poverty tool we have today. But<lb />even though most low-income<lb />working families with children<lb />qualify for both the EITC and the<lb />Child Tax Credit, up to 20<lb />percent of eligible workers do<lb />not receive them.<lb /><lb />Some unscrupulous commercial<lb />tax preparers take advantage of<lb />workers who are likely to be<lb /><lb />Nashville Tennessean; Mark<lb />Russell, managing editor of the<lb />Orlando Sentinel; Ben Holden,<lb />executive editor of the Columbus,<lb />Ga. Ledger-Enquirer; Celeste<lb />Garrett of the Chicago Tribune;<lb />Andre Jackson, assistant managing<lb />editor for business at the St. Louis<lb />Post-Dispatch; Bennie Currie,<lb />formerly of the Associated Press;<lb />Russ Mitchell, an anchor/reporter<lb />for CBS News; Warren Woodberry,<lb />a reporter for the New York Daily<lb />News; Jennifer Golson, a reporter<lb />for the Newark Star-Ledger and the<lb />list goes on. Three of my former<lb />students  " Alvin Reed, Marcia<lb />Davis and Betsy Peoples  " worked<lb />on my staff when I was editor-in-<lb /><lb />- eligible for these credits by<lb /><lb />targeting them for  orapid re-<lb />funds ? through Refund Anticipa-<lb />tion Loans (RALs). These are<lb />short-term, high-interest loans<lb />that tax filers take out against<lb />their expected tax return,<lb /><lb />Tax preparers aggressively<lb />market these loans as a way to<lb />get cash fast instead of waiting<lb />for a tax refund, and most of<lb />their customers are low-income<lb />taxpayers whoneed their<lb />refunds quickly to pay for basic<lb />needs. During 2003, about 7<lb />million low-income workers<lb />purchased RALs. But these<lb />loans undermine benefits like the<lb />EITC by costing low-income<lb />workers large portions of their<lb />tax refunds in interest and fees.<lb />Across the country, low- to<lb />moderate-income working<lb />families who claimed the EITC<lb />lost more than $900 million of<lb />their earned refunds during the<lb />2004 tax season in exchange for<lb />collecting those refunds about<lb />10 days sooner, in some casés.<lb /><lb />chief of Emerge Magazine.<lb /><lb />In addition to directing three high<lb />school workshops, I taught in<lb />summer programs at the University<lb />of Missouri, School of Journalism<lb />and a Washington-based program<lb />sponsored by Northwestern<lb />University. Out of the Northwestern<lb />summer program, designed to reach<lb />students at historically Black<lb />colleges, came Jacque Reed, an<lb />anchor for BET News, David<lb />Cummings, a reporter for ESPN<lb />Magazine and Emile Wilbekin, who<lb />served as editor-in-chief of Vibe<lb />Magazine.<lb /><lb />By no means did I do any of this<lb />alone. In each city, the workshops<lb />were sponsored and staffed by the<lb /><lb /> 6 .<lb /><lb />local affiliate of the National<lb />Association of Black journalists.<lb />After I moved to New York, the<lb />Washington workshop was directed<lb /><lb />_ by Ken Cooper, a Washington Post<lb /><lb />national correspondent and former<lb />member of my St. Louis staff; Sonja<lb />Ross and Darlene Superville of the<lb />Associated Press and Robin<lb />Bennefield of the Discovery<lb />Channel. Keith Alexander, who ,<lb />participated in the Pittsburgh<lb />program started by Christopher<lb />Moore, another former St. Louis<lb /><lb />_ Staffer, taught in the Washington<lb /><lb />program while serving as president<lb />of the Washington Association of<lb />Black Journalists.<lb /><lb />Obviously, the instructors were as<lb />enthusiastic about the workshops<lb />as the students. In addition to Chris<lb />Moore in Pittsburgh, Rochelle Riley,<lb />who served on the Washington -<lb />workshop staff, started programs in<lb />Dallas. Cheryl Smith took over in<lb />Dallas after Rochelle left for<lb />Louisville, where she started<lb />another program before moving to<lb />Detroit.<lb /><lb />Some of our former students not<lb />only became professional journal-<lb />ists, but started similar workshops  "<lb />Bennie Currie and Celeste Garrett in<lb />Memphis and Mark Russell in<lb />Cleveland.<lb /><lb />When I looked into the bright eyes<lb />of about 50 aspiring journalists on<lb /><lb />Saturday, I told them about some of<lb /><lb />the students that had gone before<lb />them. Around the time I was<lb />speaking to them, Mark Russell was<lb />preparing to leave Orlando and<lb /><lb />travel to New York, where he would<lb />be serving as a juror for the Pulitzer<lb />Prizes.<lb /><lb />A profile on Mark in 2003 for the<lb />McCormick Fellowship Initiative at<lb />Northwestern University mentioned<lb />our relationship. It noted,  oAfter<lb />watching Curry in action as a<lb />reporter for the St. Louis Post-<lb />Dispatch during the 1970s, he<lb />decided that  this is the guy I want<lb />to be like. T Russell, then 17, aban-<lb />doned his original plan to be a<lb />football player or a banker making<lb />lots of money. ?<lb /><lb />On Monday, I received an e-mail -<lb />from Juan Diasgranados, one of the<lb />students in the audience on<lb />Saturday.<lb /><lb /> o] just wanted to say that I have<lb />many future hopes in being a TV<lb />anchor or a radio personality one<lb />day, and the words of wisdom you<lb />told us really motivated me. I have<lb />been let down by some people<lb />saying I am not good enough, but I<lb /><lb /> really think I can. | just want to<lb />thank you and wish you the best of<lb /><lb />luck in your career. I hope one day I<lb />could be like you. ? .<lb /><lb />That Ts what Mark Russell said. It<lb />wasn Tt so much about me as it was<lb />about my profession. Like Mark, I<lb />am sure Juan will realize his dream.<lb />I'll be looking for him on TV.<lb /><lb />George E. Curry is editor-in-chief<lb />of the NNPA News Service and<lb />BlackPressUSA.com. He appears<lb />on National Public Radio (NPR)<lb />three times a week as part of<lb /> oNews and Notes with Ed Gor-<lb />don. ?<lb /><lb />for working families<lb /><lb />There are ways for families to<lb />learn about the benefits for<lb />whicl they are eligible and<lb />receive free, fast, tax help at the<lb />same time.  "<lb /><lb />Throughout tax season, the<lb />Children Ts Deferige Fund and<lb />others across the country are<lb />operating free tax filing sites.<lb />The Volunteer Income Tax<lb />Assistance (VITA) program<lb />was created by the IRS and is<lb />supported and overseen by the<lb />agency. VITA sites offer free tax<lb />preparation help to families<lb />making $38,000 or less per<lb />year. Volunteers are trained to<lb />help families claim the EITC and<lb />other valuable federal, state,<lb /><lb />and local tax credits to which<lb />they are entitled and collect their<lb />refunds quickly without the<lb />unnecessary high fees of com-<lb />mercial preparers.<lb /><lb />Even those who aren Tt required<lb />to file a tax return based on<lb />earnings should file a return<lb />because they may have had too<lb />much taken out of their pay-<lb /><lb />checks during the year or they<lb />might qualify for a refund<lb />through the EITC. Volunteers<lb />are also able to help working<lb />families who failed to file their<lb />taxes or claim the EITC tax<lb />credits.in the past claim them<lb />now, because they have up to<lb />three years to do so.<lb /><lb />VITA sites are set up in conve-<lb />nient locations such as shopping<lb />centers, libraries, community<lb />centers and schools. Families<lb />visiting them are also able to<lb />receive information about other<lb />government benefits, including<lb />food and nutrition programs,<lb />health care, housing, child care<lb />and energy assistance.<lb /><lb />All of CDF Ts state offices in<lb />New York, Texas, Minnesota,<lb />Ohio, Mississippi, South<lb />Carolina, Tennessee, California<lb />and the District of Columbia<lb />participate in the VITA pro-<lb />gram. Child poverty would be<lb />reduced by 20 percent and the<lb />number of families living in<lb />extreme poverty would be<lb /><lb />reduced by 70 percent if all<lb />families with children partici-<lb />pated in the government pro-<lb />grams for which they are<lb />qualified, including the EITC.<lb />The CDF is part of the move-<lb />ment to help.make free tax _<lb />assistance available, accessible<lb />and well-publicized for every-<lb />one who can use it.<lb /><lb />Could the VITA program help<lb />your family? To locate the site<lb />nearest to you, call 1-800-829-<lb />1040. If you have Internet<lb />access, you can also learn more<lb />by visiting the Tax and Benefits<lb />section of CDF Ts Web site<lb /><lb />(www.childrensdefense.org).<lb /><lb />Marian Wright Edelman is<lb />president and founder of the<lb />Children Ts Defense Fund and its<lb />Action Council whose mission is to<lb />Leave No Child Behind and to<lb />ensure every child a Healthy Start,<lb />a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe<lb />Start, and a Moral Start in life and<lb />successful passage to adulthood<lb />with the help of caring families and<lb />communities.<lb /><lb />The Return of Frankenstein Ts Monster<lb /><lb />himself, Bill Frist, is leading his<lb />clones  " House Speaker<lb />Hastert and the others  " in an<lb />attempt to stop Frankenbush, but<lb />the monster is defiant and refuses<lb />to capitulate to their commands.<lb />Yes, the puppet is turning on the<lb />puppet masters; Chuckie is on<lb />the attack. Can anyone stop him<lb />before it Ts too late?<lb /><lb />As I have said many times, it Ts<lb />always about the money, and you<lb />would think, listening to the<lb />moaning and wailing of  othe<lb />people, ? that we just discovered<lb />this stark reality. Treasury<lb />Secretary John Snow, and the<lb />rest of those corporate crooks<lb />who have been stealing every<lb />dollar they can get their hands<lb />on, have pulled off another<lb />monetary coup with this port<lb /><lb />~ deal. Everywhere you look there<lb />1S aconnection from<lb /><lb />Frankenbush to his corporate<lb />cronies. And you thought he was<lb />accountable to the Congress.<lb />Silly you.<lb /><lb />It was the Congress, at least the<lb />majogity of Congress that cre-<lb />ated bush, giving him all<lb />the nourishment he required to<lb />get stronger and stronger. Now,<lb />hehasturnedonthemandis<lb />exposing them as the weaklings<lb /><lb />they are. All they can do, now<lb />that the monster has been<lb />unleashed, is try to destroy him.<lb />If they don Tt come up with the<lb />silver bullet Frankenbush will<lb />destroy them in November<lb />2006. Can Tt you hear Vincent<lb />Price Ts spooky laugh in the<lb />background as you slide down<lb />in your seat, afraid to watch the<lb />scary climax of this B-movie?<lb />The minor plots abound. The<lb />bride of Frankenbush,  oCondi, ?<lb />as he calls her, is threatening<lb />folks all over the world. After<lb />all, she has the monster on her<lb />side. Again, I think about our<lb />prophet, Gil Scott-Heron, when<lb />he called Henry Kissinger, the<lb /> oInternational Godfather of<lb />Peace. ? Just like Richard Nixon<lb />and his boys wanted  o a piece of<lb />Laos, a piece of Angola, a piece<lb />of Viet Nam, a piece of Cuba. ?<lb />Condi also says she and<lb />Frankenbush want peace, a<lb />piece of Iraq, a piece of Iran, a<lb />piece of Syria, a piece of<lb />Afghanistan. Apparently the<lb />Frankenbush peace process<lb />calls for Condi to threaten<lb />leaders of these countries, as<lb />well as the duly elected leader<lb />of Venezuela, Caesar Chavez.<lb />Can anyone stop this monster?<lb /><lb />Frankenbush, fresh from a re-<lb />charge in 2004, hackneyed,<lb />skewed, discombobulated, and<lb />confused, is on the loose,<lb />running rampant and destroying<lb />everything in his path. He and<lb />his bride are bent on taking over<lb />the earth. It Ts Boris Karloff and<lb />Elsa Lanchester reincarnated.<lb />Keep your children in the<lb /><lb />house.<lb /><lb />Ihave to believe that any<lb />person with an ounce of gray<lb />matter knows Frankenbush is<lb />an abject failure, at least as it<lb />relates to governing this country.<lb />But, as for filling his pockets<lb />and those of his cronies, he has<lb />been a rousing success. He has<lb />done what he was told; they<lb />trotted him out on the stage,<lb />after wiring him with an ear-<lb />piece, and he stood there and<lb />delivered  " exactly what they<lb />told him to say. Of course, there<lb />are always exceptions every<lb />time Frankenbush makes his<lb />feeble attempts to speak<lb />without assistance.<lb /><lb />_ His inarticulate ramblings and<lb /><lb />mechanical movements and<lb />gestures are striking indications<lb />that Frankenbush is unsure of<lb />his balance, insecure, and<lb />unstable, at least that Ts the way<lb /><lb />it used to be. Now, the monster<lb />is walking on his own, still not<lb />making very much sense when<lb />he speaks, but he doesn Tt need<lb />to, considering the raw power<lb />he possesses.<lb /><lb />Soon we will see how powerful<lb />Frankenbush is as he has .<lb />thrown down the gauntlet<lb />before his creators. Now they<lb />must find a way to destroy him<lb />before he destroys them  "- and<lb />the rest of us. Can they do it?<lb />Surely there is much awry in<lb />this, the latest Republican<lb />laboratory experiment. The<lb />monster is running wild, not<lb />obeying the orders from those<lb />who thought they were his<lb />masters; they didn Tt know he<lb />had other masters; they thought<lb />they had him under control, but<lb />the corporate hidden hands are<lb />giving Frankenbush his orders.<lb />We are in deep trouble if he is<lb />not neutralized soon.<lb /><lb />Doesn Tt all of this make sense<lb />now? Frankenbush said he<lb /><lb />didn Tt know the levees would<lb /><lb />break; he didn Tt know Osama<lb />had plans to fly planes into<lb />buildings; and he didn Tt know<lb />about the Dubai deal; he didn Tt<lb />know Hamas would be elected.<lb />Isn Tt it obvious that he doesn Tt  "<lb /><lb />know about a lot of things?<lb />After all, he is the most ignorant,<lb />uninformed, and disconnected<lb />president in the history of this<lb />country. That Ts because he was<lb />created in a laboratory by<lb />devious, greedy, mad scientists<lb />like Rove, Cheney, Wolfowitz,<lb />Abramhoff, Ken Lay and the<lb />rest of their diabolical surgical<lb />team. .<lb /><lb />Yes, they created a monster and<lb />now, after turning on the people,<lb /><lb />' the monster has turned on<lb /><lb />Congress, a collective body that<lb />assumed it had control of the<lb />monster. Wow! I can Tt wait to<lb />see the end of this horror movie.<lb /><lb />James E. He (Dr. King)<lb />charged our morality: Do you<lb />stand by and watch the house<lb />burn? That Ts the choice we<lb />have to make. We, Black<lb />people, are morally responsible<lb />for America Ts destiny. ? The<lb />applause that followed<lb />Belafonte Ts remark was almost<lb />equal to the applause<lb />Farrakhan received when he<lb />was introduced.<lb /><lb />tame by comparison, though<lb />the latter, time wise, was given<lb />short shrift.  oWe are the direct<lb />descendants of the civil rights<lb />movement, ? said Malia Lazu of<lb />the Institute of Policy Studies,<lb /> oand we must not only register<lb />to vote, we must seek office<lb />too. ? .<lb />It would have been interesting<lb />to see some of the emerging<lb />leaders  " Dr. Ian Smith, film-<lb /><lb /> maker Shola Lynch, Eddie<lb /><lb />Glaude, Jamal Bryant and Trish<lb />Millines Dzigoin "have an<lb />intergenerational dialogue with<lb />the likes of Rev. Al Sharpton,<lb /><lb />* Wade Henderson,<lb /><lb />Angela Glover Blackwell, and<lb />Julianne Malveaux.<lb /><lb />Since the panelists were<lb />ordered to use the book to cue<lb />their remarks, it perhaps made<lb />sense that they, for the most<lb />part, mirrored the guidelines put<lb />forth by the text. Some of the<lb />veteran activists must have<lb />been struck by resemblance of<lb />the ten-chapter Covenant to the<lb />Ten Point Programs once<lb />proposed by the Nation of<lb />Islam and the Black Panther<lb />Party, though the Covenant<lb />hardly addressed African<lb />affairs, the Diaspora, the prison<lb />industrial complex, labor,<lb /><lb />unemployment, housing,<lb />homelessness, child welfare,<lb />the pandemic of AIDS, political<lb />prisoners, reparations, or<lb />police brutality. These issues<lb />were given but passing atten-<lb />tion by the panelists, whose<lb />ranks included no notable<lb />Black nationalists or individuals<lb />identified with the political left.<lb />But as Smiley notesinhis<lb />introduction to the book,  othe<lb />Covenant is not revolutionary,<lb /><lb />- butevolutionary, ? which may<lb /><lb />explain the absence of individu-<lb />als from activist groups and<lb />political formations currently<lb />doing battle with a racist<lb />society permeated by white<lb />supremacy.<lb /><lb />Among the highlights was the<lb />appearance of Katrina survi-<lb />vors. This was a nice touch and<lb />it complemented all the criti-<lb />cism leveled against the Bush<lb />administration and its slovenly °<lb />response to the Gulf Coast<lb />disaster.  <lb />Practically every speaker found<lb />a way to weave the hurricanes<lb />and their aftermaths into their<lb />comments.<lb /><lb />Smiley and his entourage are<lb />slated to host summits in six<lb />more cities, including Brooklyn<lb />this past Tuesday. At the age of three,<lb />her parents died and she was<lb />sent to live with an uncle Rever-<lb />end William Watkins, a teacher<lb /><lb />* at the Academy for Negro<lb />Youth and a radical political<lb />figure in civil rights.<lb /><lb />At the age of 13, she went to<lb /><lb />work as a nursemaid, but she :<lb />continued her education on her Hy ?"? Daath<lb />own. She was allowed to use 3<lb /><lb />the library of the family she<lb /><lb />worked for and while still in her<lb /><lb />teens began to write poetry. In<lb /><lb />1839, Harper Ts first poems<lb /><lb />were published in abolitionist<lb /><lb />periodicals. In 1845, her first<lb /><lb />collection of verse and prose<lb /><lb />was published in a collection<lb /><lb />entitled Forest Leaves.<lb /><lb />In 1850, Harper left Baltimoré )<lb />in order to become the first.) /<lb />woman to teach at Union ~ ?<lb />Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio.<lb /><lb />Sarah Parker Remond was<lb />born in 1826 in Salem. Her<lb />mother Nancy was the New-<lb />ton-born daughter of a man<lb />who fought in the Continental<lb />Army; her father John was a<lb />free black who arrived from the<lb />Dutch island of Curacao as a<lb />boy of ten in 1798. The<lb />Remonds settled in Salem,<lb />where they built a successful<lb />catering, provisioning, and<lb />hairdressing business. Although<lb />they were prosperous freer<lb />citizens of Massachusetts and<lb />protective parents, they could<lb />not shield their eight children<lb />from racial discrimination. The<lb />family set great store on educa-<lb />tion, and in 1835, Sarah and her<lb />sister passed the examination to<lb />enter the Salem High School.<lb />Within a week, they were<lb />forced to leave the school by a<lb />segregationist school committee.<lb />Outraged, the Remonds moved<lb />to Newport, RI, where Sarah<lb />attended a private school for<lb />blacks. John Remond mounted<lb />a campaign to desegregate the<lb />Salem schools, and when he<lb />succeeded in 1841, the family<lb />returned home. Sarah continued<lb />her education by reading widely<lb />and attending concerts and<lb />lectures.In 1856, at the age of<lb />30, she went to work for the<lb />American Anti-slavery Society.<lb />She had first come to public<lb />notice three years before when<lb />she was ejected from a Boston<lb />theater because she refused to<lb />sit in a segregated gallery. She<lb />was handled roughly by a<lb />policeman, and successfully<lb />sued the theater Ts owners for<lb />$500 in damages. In 1856, she<lb />began her career as a public<lb />speaker, touring New York<lb />State with a team of lecturers<lb />that included her brother<lb />Charles and another courageous<lb />Massachusetts woman, Abby<lb />Kelly Foster.           <lb /> oSeven Future Events That Will Shake<lb /><lb />~The World T<lb /><lb /> Faith May<lb /><lb />4. Two Dead Men Walking  "<lb />Revelation |1:3-12 predicts the<lb />appearance of  otwo Witnesses ?<lb /> who will proclaim the message<lb />of Jesus in Jerusalem in the days<lb />following the rapture. Their clear<lb />message will be accompanied<lb /> by miraculous signs that indicate<lb />their functions will be like that of<lb />Moses (plagues) and Elijah (fire<lb />from heaven). These are also the<lb />two witnesses that appeared with<lb />Jesus on the mount of<lb />transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-<lb />3). ,<lb /><lb /> The antichrist will suddenly turn<lb />gainst these two men, kill them<lb />and leave their dead bodies in<lb />the streets of Jerusalem for public<lb /><lb />9<lb /><lb />In the last issue I gave you information from the Bible predicting<lb />at least Seven future events that are destined to shake the world in<lb />the  olast days ?. I gave you three of the seven events. Here are<lb /><lb />the other four.<lb /><lb />days, they will be miraculously<lb /><lb />resurrected and raptured into<lb /><lb />heaven (Revelation 11:11-12).<lb />This dramatic event will be<lb />witnessed by the whole world,<lb />presumably on satellite television.<lb />It will serve as a final warning to<lb />those who have rejected the<lb />Gospel and been left behind<lb />during the great tribulation.<lb /><lb />5. Jewish Temple Rebuilt-The first<lb />Temple in Jerusalem was built by<lb />King Solomon. It was destroyed<lb />in 586 B.C. by the Babylonians.<lb /><lb />The Second Temple was built by:<lb /><lb />Zerubbable in 515 B.C. It was<lb />later remodeled by King Herod<lb />and destroyed by the Romans in<lb />AD 70. Today, there is no Jewish<lb />Temple on the sacred Temple<lb />Mount for more than 1,300 years,<lb />since AD 691. Nevertheless, the<lb />Bible predicts that the antichrist<lb />( oman of sin T ? T) will enter the Jewish<lb />Temple in the last days and insist<lb /> that he be worshipped as God (II<lb />Thessalonians 2:3-4). This<lb />prophecy presupposes the<lb /><lb />existence of another Jewish<lb /><lb /> Temple in the future. Since the<lb /><lb />Dome of the Rock and the<lb />rebuilding of the Jewish Temple<lb />in its place, perhaps under the<lb />auspices and protection of the<lb />antichrist himself.<lb /><lb />6. Holocaust Eclipsed  " One on<lb />the most serious biblical<lb />prophecies points to the invasion<lb />of Jerusalem in the biblical last<lb />days. While Israel is dwelling<lb />securely, she will suddenly be<lb />invaded by hordes of old Gentile<lb /><lb />nations. Both the Old Testament<lb /><lb />(Ezekiel 38:39; Joel 2:1-11;<lb />Zechariah 14:1-3) and the New<lb />Testament (Matthew 24: 15-28;<lb />Revelation 16:1-2) predict an<lb />assault on Jerusalem in the end<lb /><lb />7. God Comes To Earth  " The<lb />great climax of biblical prophecy<lb />is the triumphal return of Jesus<lb />Christ described in Revelation<lb />19:11-16. He returns from<lb />heaven to earth to win the Battle<lb />of Armageddon (Revelation<lb />16:16), defeat the Beast and the<lb /><lb />False Prophet and cast Satan in<lb />to"the abyss for 1,000 years<lb />(revelation 19:19-20:3). Only His<lb />return will bring peace to the<lb />planet and an end to human<lb />hostilities. In the Person of Jesus<lb />Christ, the Prince of Peace, God<lb />comes to earth to reign and rule<lb />in peace and righteousness. This<lb /><lb />page 9<lb /><lb />exceeded by eternity itself when<lb />all the saints of God dwell<lb />together in the New Jerusalem<lb />(Revelation 21-22).<lb /><lb />The final prophecies of the<lb />Revelation ends with an invitation.<lb />Jesus speaks one last time, urging<lb />us to  otestify. . these things in the<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice Newspaper March 15 - 25, 2006<lb /><lb />and the bride say, come. And Jet<lb />him that is thirsty, come. And<lb />whoever will, let him come ?<lb />(22:17). However,<lb />at some point, an intelligent<lb /><lb />_ person must ask,  oWhat is<lb />God's true religion? ?<lb /><lb />at My religious classes taught me<lb />= eaus did not like people who<lb /><lb />ra gave lip service to faith. But you must be a free<lb />people to establish God Ts laws.<lb />The Jews knew very well their<lb /><lb />" position as helpless captives in<lb /><lb />their own land.<lb /><lb />If mankind was to have a<lb />chance at a better life, a people<lb />must rise with God Ts<lb />message. "a people free from<lb />bondage. Jesus tells his<lb />disciples a prophet was coming<lb />after him, who would lead all of<lb />mankind to all truths. Thus, the<lb />opportunity to have absolute<lb />freedom would be available to<lb />everyone who wanted it. But it<lb />was not coming from Jesus<lb />because Jesus knew he was the<lb />last prophet from the Children<lb />of Israel, and the Children of<lb />Israel were unable to act freely.<lb />God was shifting this<lb /><lb />c<lb /><lb />. r<lb /><lb />responsibility to the descendants<lb />of Ishmael, Prophet Abraham Ts<lb />first born son. Jesus was not<lb />the first messenger from God<lb />who predicted this. Moses in<lb />Deuteronomy also spoke to the<lb />Jews about this man and the<lb />scholars of Jesus time asked<lb />him if he was that prophet.<lb /><lb />According to both messengers<lb />of God, the last Prophet of<lb />God, would be a religious<lb />leader, a military commander,<lb />and a statesman. Reviewing<lb />history you find six hundred<lb />years after Jesus, a Prophet<lb />came from the Arabs, just as<lb />Moses predicted. As Jesus<lb />predicted he spoke to the<lb />people words that did not come<lb />from him. His name was<lb />Muhammad and the words he<lb />spoke are verses from the<lb />Qur Tan. The first<lb /><lb />Q: How long do you expect that<lb />to last?<lb /><lb />A: Everybody Ts saying I Tm great<lb /><lb />or the trial. In terms of the<lb />government Ts case, I think it will<lb /><lb />go another two or three weeks.<lb /><lb />Q: What do you think of the<lb />prosecution thus far?<lb /><lb />A: I Tve never thought much of<lb />them.<lb /><lb />It Ts a terribly flawed prosecution<lb />and a terribly flawed<lb />prosecution team.<lb /><lb />Q: Can you give me one<lb />example why?<lb /><lb />A: It Ts like [Franz] Kafka said,<lb /> First the verdict, then the trial. T<lb /><lb />This has been an almost eight-<lb />year inquisition where they have<lb />gone through every aspect of<lb />my life. They T ve paraded every<lb />friend that I have in front of the<lb />Grand Jury  " every golfing<lb />friend, every poker buddy,<lb />every African-American<lb />businessman who did [City<lb />Hall] contracts  "they Tve all -<lb />been hauled in. It is shameful<lb />what they have done. Their<lb />conduct has been nothing short<lb />of disgraceful.<lb /><lb />Q: Is race a factor here?<lb /><lb />A: There is no doubt that race<lb />plays a factor in this<lb />prosecution. For anybody who<lb />saw the disgraceful response to<lb />Hurricane Katrina; anybody<lb />who was living in some fantasy<lb />land who thought that race does<lb />not play a role in America today<lb />that should have been a stark<lb />reminder that race continues to<lb />be a problem.<lb /><lb />Q: Are black mayors and<lb />politicians still being unfairly<lb />persecuted in your opinion or<lb />are you perceived as just a bad<lb />apple who got caught with his<lb />hand in the cookie jar?<lb /><lb />A: Every Black mayor  " [San<lb />Francisco T ] Willie Brown,<lb />[Houston Ts] Lee Brown, [New<lb />Orleans Ts] Marc Morial,<lb />[Newark Ts] Sharp James,<lb />[Philadelphia Ts] John Street,<lb />[Atlanta Ts} Maynard Jackson<lb />and Andrew Young  " it Ts no<lb />accident that a roll call of every<lb />Black mayor in America over<lb />the past 20-years has been<lb />investigated in some way, shape<lb />or form. That Ts a shocking _<lb />statement about how things are.<lb />It Ts more of an indictment of the<lb />system than it is of those<lb />mayors.<lb /><lb />Q: This is the trial of your life. It<lb />has to be daunting and fearful.<lb /><lb />A: The only thing that concerns<lb /><lb />me is the entire weight of the<lb />Justice department. They have a<lb />courtroom full of FBI, IRS and T<lb />government agents. When it is<lb />all said and done, the case is -<lb />paper-thin. It really has no<lb />connection with me. But I will<lb />prevail. I will be vindicated. I<lb />don Tt know of acivil rights<lb />leader worth anything that<lb />hasn Tt had to endure the weight<lb />of government investigations on<lb />them. Name one. .<lb /><lb />Q: This has been costly and<lb />personally painful, has it not?<lb /><lb />A: No doubt. It has cost both<lb />financially and emotionally.<lb />What hurts is to hear people<lb />hurting about you.<lb /><lb />Q: [heard you tell a well-wisher<lb />that this is like a campaign<lb />again. Is that how you see it?<lb /><lb />A: Somebodythat Ts mayor of<lb />Atlanta, you are always<lb />campaigning in a sense. I used<lb />to go out with Maynard<lb /><lb />Jackson and Andrew Young;<lb />you are always the mayor of<lb />Atlanta, no matter where you go<lb />or what you do. So to that<lb />extent, itis always a campaign<lb /><lb />- mode  " people want to know<lb /><lb />about you and what you are<lb />doing. They are interested in<lb />your life because you have<lb />played such a role in their lives<lb />in the city of Atlanta.<lb /><lb />Q: When this trial is over and if<lb />you are exonerated, what will<lb />you say or do then?<lb /><lb />A: I will go to church and give<lb />thanks because I have had such<lb />spiritual support. It has been<lb />humbling to have the support of<lb />so many people of faith. I don Tt<lb />think I have walked by anybody<lb />in Southwest Atlanta during the<lb />past six months who hasn Tt said,<lb /> I Tm praying for you.
