Cabrera,<lb />Special to the AmNews<lb /><lb />A new report released by the<lb />Center for Immigration<lb />Studies found that close to<lb />eight million people moved to<lb />the United States in the past<lb />five years.<lb /><lb />The report comes as the<lb />House passed a bill to limit<lb />illegal immigration by increas-<lb /><lb />ing border security and requir-<lb /><lb />~ ing workplace enforcement of<lb />immigration laws. Legislators<lb />left the issue of what to do<lb />with the 11 million undocu-<lb />mented workers in this coun-<lb />try until next year.<lb /><lb />The House legislation, billed<lb />as a border-protection, anti-<lb />terrorism and Illegal Immigra-<lb />- tion Control Act, includes<lb />a measures as eee<lb /><lb />entrants and reeling Fetinisy-<lb />ers to-verifu the legal status of "<lb />their workers. It authorizes the<lb />building of a fence along parts<lb />of the U.S.-Mexico border.<lb />The bill will also charge illegal<lb />immigrants with a felony.<lb /><lb />Democrats said changing the<lb />law to make illegal presence<lb />in the United States a felony<lb /><lb />instead of a civil offense would<lb /><lb />turn all illegal immigrants includ-<lb />ing nearly 2 million children into<lb />felons.<lb /><lb />Representative Brad Miller, a<lb />Democrat oposed the bill,<lb />labeling it as unfair.<lb /><lb /> oThis bill does more to push<lb />the people who are here into<lb /><lb />immigration problem, ? Miller<lb />said.<lb /><lb />Representative Howard<lb />Coble, a Reublican, supported<lb /><lb />. the bill, but like Miller, believes<lb /><lb />more needs to be done to deal<lb />with the needs of immigrants<lb />already here.<lb /><lb />We need to ensure that the<lb />workers who are here and are<lb />interested in jobs are alright, ?<lb />Coble ae ~My farmers tell<lb /><lb />: si 2 jobs that they c cant get<lb /><lb />Americans to-do. ?<lb /><lb />Mexico Ts Foreign Relations "<lb />Secretary, Luis Ernesto Derbez,<lb /><lb />labeled the bill owrong, ? and<lb />called-for protests against it<lb />from U.S. groups.<lb /><lb /> oThis type of law that builds<lb />walls, puts more people on<lb />border patrols, or hardens the<lb /><lb />sanctions against those who hire<lb />an undocumented person, don Tt<lb />lead to adequate solutions, ?<lb />Derbez said.<lb /><lb />There are currently 35.2 million<lb />foreign-born people living in the<lb />United States, according to the<lb />Census Buréau Ts oCurrent<lb />Population Survey. ? It is two-and-a-hald<lb />times the 13.5 million during the<lb />peak of the last great immigra-<lb />tion wave in 1910, ? said the<lb />report by Steven Camarota,<lb />Director of Research for the<lb /><lb />Center for Immigration Studies,<lb /><lb />which advocates tougher<lb />policies on illegal immigration<lb />and favors attracting immigrants<lb /><lb />About 12.1 percent of the<lb />current U.S. population was<lb />born in another country, the<lb />highest percentage since 1920,<lb />according to Census figures.<lb /><lb />But Angela Kelley, Deputy<lb />Director of the National Immi-<lb />gration Forum, said it Ts impos-<lb />sible to deport 11 million illegal<lb />immigrants, who make up about<lb /><lb />five percent of the U.S. work<lb />force.<lb /><lb /> oThere isn Tt fair dust that is<lb />going to make the 11 million<lb />people go away, ? Kelley said.<lb /> oTt would be far more sensible<lb />to give them a chamge to join<lb />the American family ona<lb />permanent basis. ? ;<lb />A recent study by the Pew<lb />Hispanic Center found that<lb />immigration levels peaked<lb />around 2000, and dropped in<lb />2002 and 2003. Nevertheless,<lb />immigration levels remained<lb /><lb />high.<lb /><lb />Audrey Singer, an immigra-<lb />tion fellow at the Brookings<lb />Institution, said, oThere Ts no<lb />doubt that we are at a high in<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice Newspaper February | - -14,-2006<lb /><lb />inori<lb /><lb /> ofe tis<lb /><lb />immigration to the United<lb />States. ? Singer said immigrants<lb />are attracted by economic<lb />opportunities and social ties to<lb />people living here.<lb /><lb />President Bush has proposed<lb />a guest worker program that<lb /><lb />would allow immigrants to<lb /><lb />stay in the country temporarily<lb />to fill jobs unwanted by<lb />Americans.<lb /><lb />The guest worker provision is<lb />not part of the House Bill.<lb /><lb />The main arguments on immi-<lb />gration center around national<lb />security from possible terrorist<lb />immigrants, while others argue<lb />that the economy would col-<lb />lapse without the cheap labor<lb /><lb />ta<lb /><lb />provided by undocumented<lb />workers.<lb />The Center for Immigration<lb /><lb />Studies report says that immi-<lb />grants, on average, are less<lb />educated and more likely to live<lb />in poverty'than people born in<lb />the United States. |<lb /><lb />The Pew Hispanic Center,<lb />however, sayds that education<lb />levels are improving among<lb />recent immigrants.<lb /><lb />Mexico is the largest supplier<lb />of immigrants to the United<lb /><lb />~ States, followed by East Asia,<lb /><lb />Europe, the Caribbean,<lb />Central America and South<lb />America, accotding to the<lb />report.<lb /><lb />BLACK AMERICAN FIRSTS<lb /><lb />Attorney and former U.S. Senator<lb />Born: 8/16/1947<lb />Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois<lb /><lb />Derek K. <lb />Somehow, I can never get used<lb />to White people asking Black<lb />actors, |<lb />athletes and entertainers what<lb />they think on issues beyond the<lb />range and reality of their<lb />intellectual competence. They<lb />do not ask Barbra Strefsand to<lb />explain Israel Ts occupation of<lb />Palestine or Richard Dreyfuss<lb />to explain the Jewish concept<lb />of ochosenness ? in a<lb />multicultural world which<lb />stresses the equal dignity and<lb />divinity of every person and<lb />people. They ask the appropri-<lb />ate persons who are grounded<lb />in the topic or area. Surely,<lb />anybody can say anything<lb />within the framework of<lb />respect for others T rights; but<lb />one does develop a<lb /><lb />healthy suspicion of white<lb />motives when Blacks are<lb />trotted out to condemn people<lb />and things Black, distort or<lb /><lb />cnhatining degree of igno-<lb /><lb />q<lb /><lb />Soon after the enactment of<lb />the Voting Rights Act of<lb />1965 and the publication of<lb /> oBlack Power ? by Stokeley<lb />Carmichael and Dr. Charles<lb />Hamilton, I prepared a<lb />proposal for funding Blacks<lb />to secure political control *<lb />over Black Belt counties in<lb />Georgia extending from<lb />Columbus to Albany.<lb />I submitted the proposal to<lb />the Voter Education Project<lb />of the Southern Regional<lb />Council. The first clue was<lb />its name. It was not the<lb /> oPolitical Education<lb />Project. ? Blacks still need a<lb />political education. We<lb />stepped off on the wrong<lb />foot in 1965. President<lb />Lyndon Johnson knew<lb />plantation politics.<lb /><lb />Political ignorance, CIA-<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice Newspaper February T 1 - 14, 2006 page 2<lb /><lb />- by Maulana Kauranga<lb /><lb />rance, insensitivity<lb /><lb />and willingness to be used.<lb /><lb />So, when 60 Minutes touted last<lb />Sunday Ts edition with the acad-<lb />emy award winning actor Mor-<lb />gan Freeman by airing his<lb />contrived controversial position<lb />on Black History Month, some<lb />of us braced for the song and<lb />sound of oracial ? T/ethnic suicide<lb />which whites religiously request<lb />and |<lb />urge from those whom they<lb />advertise and give the opportu-<lb />nity. Thus, the<lb /><lb />hype and feigned horror around<lb />Freeman Ts statement of no race<lb />and no Black History Month,<lb />should be seen not only as an<lb /><lb />, attempt to increase their Black<lb /><lb />audience, but also, as is the<lb />custom, a move to strike an<lb />ever-ready blow against<lb />Afrocentric thinking, to promote<lb />an idea while pretending to<lb />question it and to put the attack<lb />on Black History Month in the<lb />mouth of a Black celebrity. This<lb /><lb />unavoidably calls to mind how<lb /><lb /> oBlack men and women millions<lb /><lb /> Freeing Morgan Freeman:<lb />| Reaffirming Black History<lb /><lb />to self-mutilate in public, to sing<lb />and say degrading things about<lb />thems¢lves and their people<lb />which whites could not say<lb />without being<lb /><lb />condemned and opposed as<lb />racists.<lb /><lb />Let me rush to say I see no<lb />conspiracy in this. My assump-<lb />tions are more concretely<lb />focused. What I see is a system<lb />of racism which set in motion in<lb />1776 in this country and even<lb />before, continues to operate<lb />unless and until it is stopped. It<lb />is a system which denies and<lb />deforms peoples T history and<lb />humanity and assigns them a<lb />level of human worth and social<lb />status based on how close they<lb />look or act like white folks.<lb /><lb />Thus, you have self-mutilation<lb />by peoples of color, i.e., the<lb />yellowing of hair, blue contacts,<lb />chopped-off cheeks, narrowed<lb />noses and the relining of lips, in<lb />order to look like and please<lb />the people who cause the<lb />pathology of self-hate in them in<lb />the first place.<lb /><lb />ge uege tits m<lb /><lb />"part ofthe tonic and terrible<lb /><lb />- effect of racism. Thus, I won-<lb /><lb />dered if Freeman Ts statement<lb />that he was against the Missis-<lb />sippi flag and its confederate<lb />logo because oit excludes Jews,<lb />N " and homosexuals ? and<lb />then, for/no apparent reason,<lb />walking'toward Miké Wallace<lb />mocking a flamboyant<lb />homosexual, wasn Tt in part an<lb />attempt to hide or minimize<lb />Blackness and Black maleness<lb />which are so threatening to<lb />Whites. His inclusion of<lb /><lb />other excluded groups "<lb /><lb /> though not others of color, his<lb /><lb />use of the oN ? word to refer<lb />to us and not the oK ? word<lb />for Jews or the oF T word for<lb />homosexuals and his mockery<lb />of homosexual flamboyance,<lb />all speak to a<lb /><lb />pattern well-established in the<lb />white media. For the initiative<lb />was not to present one of the<lb />most accomplished and skillful<lb />actors of our time in dignity-<lb />affirming ways. Rather it was, as<lb />racial protocol demands, to<lb />present him as a problematic _<lb />personality, a denier of the value<lb />of Black, and a defector from<lb />the people who brought him into<lb /><lb />~ being and informs the artful way<lb /><lb />he acts on screen. It was said<lb /><lb />that Freeman took this stand<lb /><lb />identity and one history isa<lb /><lb />him beyondrace But oven<lb /><lb />Searching for the mom insult.. level.<lb /><lb />of VEP, a person who is now<lb />one of the most politically<lb />connected Blacks in the United<lb />States, told me. personally that<lb />the voting rights legislation<lb />would not allow Blacks to<lb />exercise political power. This<lb />revelation threw me for a loop.<lb />Blacks would become political<lb />pawns.<lb /><lb />Two years ago, I wrote, in this<lb />column, that Blacks in New<lb />York City should first seek to<lb />control the City Council.<lb />Although whites are a distinct<lb />minority (30%) in New York<lb />City, they still control the City<lb />Council by a slim margin of<lb /><lb /> oone councilperson. Twenty-six<lb /><lb />whites sit on the City Council.<lb /><lb />The remaining twenty-five<lb />councilpersons are either<lb />Black, Latino or Asian with<lb />Blacks employing the balance<lb />of power. In reality, Black<lb />elected officials are pawns of<lb />the Democratic Party with<lb />deep roots in Dixie. Black<lb />voters are being used to en-<lb />dorse white. power.<lb /><lb />White councilpersons feel<lb />comfortable running for the<lb />post of City Council speaker<lb />knowing that Black, Latino<lb />and Asian elected officials will<lb />not upset the applecart. Stated<lb /><lb />was roundly rejected. The head the nal on nthe head. Accord-<lb /><lb />ing to Sharpton, Blacks are<lb /> oaddicted to crackers. ? Thus,<lb />the insistence of Blacks to<lb /><lb />worship a white Jesus is only<lb /><lb />symptomatic of the virulent<lb />disease of Negro inferiority<lb />and the belief in the divine<lb />rights of whites. Malcolm X<lb />summed it up this way: oWe<lb />sick boss. ?<lb /><lb />Dr. King, Malcolm X, Fannie<lb />Lou Hamer, Medgar Evers,<lb />Kwame Ture, Jamal Abdullah<lb />A]-Amin, and Adam Clayton<lb />Powell, Jr., among others,<lb />shared a common trait. They<lb />were political dissenters.<lb />Today, all Black dissenters of<lb />white supremacy are either<lb />dead, on punishment or in<lb />exile and Blacks are warmly<lb />embracing political pacifists<lb />and racial accommodationists.<lb /><lb />Municipal government in New<lb />York is based on minority<lb />tule. To enjoy standing in<lb />formulating public policy, the<lb />policy maker must be male<lb />and pale. Only the mayor and<lb />the City Council speaker can<lb />make policy decisions and<lb />dispense patronage.<lb /><lb /> Council members receive<lb />bribes to keep quiet and to<lb />monitor political dissidents.<lb />This comes, mostly in the form<lb /><lb />virate " governor, majority<lb />leader of the New York<lb />Senate and speaker of the<lb />New York Assembly. Only<lb />whites can campaign for<lb />policy-making positions. The<lb />Black vote has as much value<lb />as a three-dollar bill with<lb />Little Richard Ts face on it.<lb />Representation is the sine qua<lb />non of a republican form of<lb />government. It was the issue<lb />for colonized whites in the<lb />eighteenth century. It is the<lb />challenge for colonized Blacks<lb />today. Unfortunately, we are<lb />hooked on Black faces in high<lb />places. This is pacifism.<lb />Elected officials and promi-<lb />nent Black spokespersons, for<lb />example, are unable to lift one<lb />inger for my reinstatement to<lb />practice law because they<lb />have already received consid-<lb />eration to help keep Blacks<lb />politically impotent and as<lb />sitting ducks in kangaroo<lb />proceedings. The mere fact<lb />that a person is in possession<lb />of a ballot is not prima facie<lb />evidence that this person is a<lb /> opolitical ? holder in due<lb />course.<lb />The essence of citizenship is<lb />political and legal representa-<lb />tion. If you need any further<lb /><lb />proof, of our lack of represen-<lb /><lb />tation, study the biographies<lb />of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.<lb /><lb />pause and<lb /><lb />money "ask Oprah who has<lb />~ omore "may improve social<lb /><lb />status, but not racial<lb /><lb />. Status, and it won Tt until we<lb /><lb />Jit . : * . ; a<lb /><lb />"| Butregardless of 60 Minutes T<lb /><lb />motives and Freeman Ts con-<lb /><lb />scious or<lb /><lb />unconscious collaboration in<lb />them, this provides us with an<lb />opportunity to critique the<lb />media Ts racial (racist) protocol<lb />in presentation of Africans and<lb />other peoples of color. And it<lb />also provides an opening to<lb />revisit and reaffirm the meaning<lb />and message of Black History<lb />Month and Black history as a<lb />whole. Black History Month is<lb />a special time of focus, but<lb />Black history is everyday. And<lb />since,-as our ancestors in Egypt<lb />taught us, we are not just in<lb />history, we are history, we<lb />already<lb /><lb />discuss ourselves, our thoughts<lb />and actions, everyday and all<lb />year.<lb /><lb />No one seriously complains<lb />about only one day for Christ-<lb />mas and<lb /><lb />Hanukkah, or one month for<lb />Ramadan. For they know there<lb />is aneed for a special time to<lb />mark messages and meanings<lb />that should enrich and guide our<lb />daily lives. It is the same with<lb />King Day, Malcolm Day, Fannie<lb />Lou Hamer Day, Kwanzaa<lb />week and Black History Month.<lb /><lb />So we have a special time when<lb />we, as a national and world "<lb />community of African people,<lb />focus on the ancient and ongo-<lb />ing record and struggle of our<lb /><lb />| people intheinawesome march :<lb /><lb />through htinan history We ©<lb /><lb />are forbidden from exercising<lb />political power. Because<lb />colonization is mostly mental,<lb />it has been difficult, if not<lb /><lb />* impossible for activists to<lb /><lb />connect the dots. Mental<lb />paralysis only exists ina<lb />colony.<lb /><lb />Speaking of mental paralysis,<lb />Blacks are poised to over-<lb />whelmingly support New<lb />York State Attorney General<lb />Eliot Spitzer Ts bid to become<lb />New York Ts next governor<lb />even though he has argued in<lb />court that Black children are<lb />only entitled to an eighth<lb />grade education under<lb />Cummings v. Richmond Co.<lb />Bd. of Educ., decided by the<lb />Supreme Court in 1899.<lb /><lb />He favors the death penalty.<lb />He has not only destroyed<lb />BUEFNY and the Hale House<lb />but he is also refusing to<lb />disclose exculpatory materials<lb />in the Tawana Brawley case<lb />and is vigorously opposing my<lb />reinstatement to practice law<lb />in a civil rights lawsuit I<lb />initiated in Brooklyn Federal<lb />Court.<lb /><lb />Sharpton is Spitzer Ts main<lb />cheerleader in the Black<lb />colony. This unwavering<lb />support demonstrates the<lb />absence of an insult level. On<lb />the other hand, Republicans<lb />are calling for Spitzer Ts<lb /><lb />pay: homage to those who<lb />paved the paths down which<lb /><lb />we now walk, absorb their<lb />spirit of struggle and possibil-<lb />ity, extract and emulate their<lb />models of human excellence.<lb />and achievement, and study<lb /><lb />the lessons of our history that "<lb /><lb />lie as a rich resource for our<lb />self-understanding and<lb />self-assertion in the world. ©<lb /><lb />Yes, Morgan, we are African-<lb />Americans and thus an indis-<lb />pensable and central part of<lb />American or rather U.S.<lb />history, like Native Ameri-<lb />cans, Latino Americans, Asian<lb />Americans and Euro-Ameri-<lb />cans. But each of us<lb /><lb />has our own history and it is<lb />this combination of histories<lb />that make U.S. history, just<lb /><lb />_ like the combination of T<lb /><lb />peoples maké up the country.<lb /><lb />Thus, to deny and eliminate<lb />these histories, intertwined as<lb />they are, is in a real sense, to<lb />deny and eliminate the exist-<lb />ence of the peoples who make<lb />and are these histories.<lb /><lb />Dr. Maulana Kareng T, Profes-<lb />sor of Black Studies, Califor-<lb />nia State<lb /><lb />University-Long Beach, Chair<lb />of The Organization Us,<lb />Creator of Kwanzaa, and<lb />author of Kwanzaa: A Cel-<lb />ebration of Family, Commu-<lb />nity and Culture, [www.Us<lb />Organization. on and<lb /><lb />Chairman John Whitehead<lb /><lb />claimed that Spitzer threat- (<lb />ened him after he criticized<lb />Spitzer in a Wall Street<lb /><lb />~Journal article. The most important<lb />thing toa person is their family.<lb />People have told us three<lb />reasons why family is so impor-<lb />tant to them; source of strength<lb />for each other, supporting each<lb />other no matter what, and<lb />encouraging each other.<lb /><lb />First, family isthe sourceof<lb />strength for each other, and their<lb />love for each other will live<lb />forever. For a person to know<lb />that his family is for him<lb />strengthens him fully. They also<lb />motivate a person to do their<lb />best in any situation - good or<lb />bad. When necessary, they<lb /><lb />.. May even discipline them. Also,<lb /><lb />family members listen to each<lb />other and help each other make<lb />the right decisions. Therefore, if<lb />a person is looking for strength-<lb />ening, tell that person to go<lb />home to his family.<lb /><lb />Next, family members always<lb />stick together no matter what.<lb />They support each other fully.<lb />Aperson Ts family will support<lb />them no matter what because<lb />they love them. Ifa person is<lb /><lb />on the topes, the one thing that<lb />would help them is their family.<lb />When a person goes off to<lb /><lb /> college or out into the world,<lb /><lb />they know that wen times get<lb />bad their family will catch them<lb />when they fall. When every- "<lb />thing has left a person and there<lb />is nothing to live for; the family<lb />will help them breathe again.<lb /><lb />Finally, family encourages,<lb />comforts, understands, and<lb />teaches each other to love ,<lb />everybody - even the people in<lb />the world who don Tt make the<lb />right choices. Family encour-<lb />ages a person to do well in<lb />every aspect of their lives.<lb />When a person is down and<lb />needs someone to comfort<lb />them, call the person Ts family.<lb />Everyone can count on them in<lb />that situation. Family also<lb />understands you, even if others<lb />don Tt. Family teaches how to<lb />love and care for each other<lb />because family is the only thing<lb />a person always has.<lb /><lb />Supporting each other no matter<lb />what, a source of strength for<lb />each other, and encouraging<lb />each other are the perfect<lb />reasons family is so important<lb />thing to anyone. Family shows<lb />their loyalty by loving andcare -<lb />for each other; and ultimately,<lb />they will live together in heaven.<lb /><lb />Reflections, Expressions, & Views<lb /><lb />by Suzette Jones<lb /><lb />How to Honor Dr. King<lb /><lb />Not that I see one on the<lb />horizon, but if y Tall ever deign to<lb />make my birthday a national<lb />holiday, please celebrate it by<lb />going to work and sending your<lb />children to school.<lb /><lb /> oBut Big Papa, ? you say, oyour<lb />_ birthday is in the middle of the<lb />summer, when schools are<lb />closed. ? As an unin-<lb />spired student, I Td have wel-<lb />comed any respite from school<lb /> "but still would have ques-<lb />tioned what my hanging out on<lb />the basketball court had to do<lb /><lb /> T with honoring the dude.<lb /><lb />You know all of those interfaith<lb />religious services, parades and<lb />speeches commemorating<lb />King? Great stuff; just do it on<lb />the weekend or after school.<lb />Taking King Ts birthday off "<lb />from work, from school " is<lb />akin toa mountain climber Ts<lb />nearly conquering his highest .<lb />peak and then lying down to<lb />take anap instead of reveling in<lb /><lb />X .<lb /><lb />the.accomplishment, pirding his<lb />loins for the final push.<lb /><lb />Despite the unimaginable ? |<lb /><lb />progress we T ve made over the "<lb /><lb />past 40 years, no one would<lb />say we T ve reached that mythical<lb />mountaintop of which King<lb /><lb /> dreamed. Now is not the time<lb /><lb />for napping, or taking off.<lb /><lb />. Playing hooky from work or<lb />school, even if it is officially<lb />sanctioned, is not the way to<lb />honor his memory. Those of us<lb />who hold jobs and positions to<lb />which we couldn Tt even have<lb />aspired 40 years ago should:<lb /><lb />make it a point to go to work an<lb /><lb />make our children take advan-<lb />tage of educational opportuni-<lb />ties to which previous genera-<lb /><lb />. tions didn Tt have access.<lb /><lb />Alas, too many of our children<lb />are not doing that. <lb /> "_ " " eerie<lb /><lb />A<lb /><lb />A New Civil Rights Movement<lb /><lb />One of the cruelest aspects of<lb />Slavery was the way it wrenched<lb />apart black families, separating<lb />husbands from wives and children<lb />from their parents, .<lb /><lb />Itis ironic, to say the least, that<lb /><lb />now, nearly a century and a half<lb />after the Emancipation<lb />Proclamation, much of the most<lb />devastating damage to black<lb />families, and especially black<lb />children, is self-inflicted.<lb /><lb />You don Tt have to be Sherlock.<lb />Holmes to know that some of the<lb /><lb />Most serious problems facing<lb /><lb />blacks in the United States- - from<lb />poverty to incarceration rates to<lb />death at an early age - are linked<lb />. in varying degrees to behavioral<lb />issues and the corrosion of black<lb />family life, especially the absence<lb />of fathers.<lb /><lb />Another devastating aspect of<lb />Slavery was the numbing<lb />ignorance that often resulted from<lb />the prohibition against the<lb />education of slaves. It was against<lb />_the law in most instances for<lb />slaves to even learn to read. Now,<lb />with education widely (though<lb />imper-fectly) available, we have<lb />entire le-gions of black youngsters<lb />turning their backs on school,<lb />choosing in-stead to wallow ina<lb />self-imposed ig-norance that in<lb />the long run. is as de-structive as<lb />a bullet to the brain.<lb /><lb />Healing black America, from<lb />within.<lb /><lb />I remember interviewing a<lb />17-year-old dropout in<lb />Brooklyn who had already<lb />fathered two children by two<lb />different girls. He wasn Tt<lb />working and he wasn Tt helping<lb />to support either child. I asked<lb />if he had considered going back<lb />to school. He looked at me,<lb />puzzled. oFor what? ? he said.<lb /><lb />Most black people are not<lb /><lb />Bpor. Most are not.criminals.<lb />ost are leading productive<lb /><lb />lives. The black middleclassis<lb /><lb />larger and more suc-cessful<lb />than ever. But there are millions<lb /><lb />who are still out in the cold, .<lb /><lb />caught in a cycle of poverty,<lb />ignorance, illness and violence<lb />that is taking a horrendous toll.<lb /><lb />Nearly a third of black men<lb />in-their 20s have criminal<lb />records, and 8 percent of all<lb />black men between the-ages of<lb />25 and 29 are behind bars.<lb /><lb />HIV and AIDS have literally<lb />become the black plague.<lb />Although blacks are just 13<lb />percent of the over-all.<lb />population, they account for<lb />more than half of all new HIV<lb />infections. Black women<lb />account for an astonishing 72<lb />percent of all new cases among<lb />women. This is frightening.<lb /><lb />Black children routinely get a<lb />rough start in life. Two-thirds of<lb />them are born out of wedlock,<lb /><lb />_and nearly half of all black children<lb /><lb />brought up in a single-parent<lb />household are poor. Those kids<lb />are much more, likely to drop out<lb />of school, struggle economically,<lb />be initiators or victims of violence,<lb />and endure a variety of serious<lb />health problems. . ?<lb /><lb />We can pretend that these<lb />terrible things are not<lb />happening, put they are.<lb />There Ts a crisis in the black<lb />community, and it won Tt do to<lb />place all of the blame on<lb />society and government.<lb /><lb />I Tve spent years writing<lb />about un-faimess and appalling<lb />injustices. Society is unfair and<lb />racism is still a rampant evil.<lb />But much of the suffering in<lb />black America could be<lb />alle-viated by changes in<lb />behavior. What Ts more, those<lb />behavioral changes would<lb />empower the community in<lb />ways that would make it easier<lb />to successfully confront<lb />Opponents in government and<lb />push the society in a more<lb />equitable direction.<lb /><lb />The problems facing black<lb />people today are comparable<lb />in magnitude to those of the Jim<lb /><lb />| Crow era of the 20th cenitnry,<lb /><lb />There were leaders in those<lb />days who were equal to the<lb />challenge:<lb /><lb />I believe that nothing short of a<lb /><lb />new. movement; comparable in |p<lb /><lb />scope and dedication to that of<lb />the civil rights era, is required to<lb /><lb />i]<lb />1 te CMRI at ea matunga pla. TREE<lb /><lb />1103 Broad Street Lo |<lb /><lb />page7 The Minority Voice Newspaper February 1 - 14, 2006<lb /><lb />HAPPY VALENTINE TS DAY<lb />TO YOU AND YOURS<lb />The MVoice<lb /><lb />_ Newspaper<lb /><lb />by Bob Hi<lb />(New York Tents)<lb /><lb />bring about the changes in values<lb />and behavior needed to halt the<lb />self destruction that is consuming<lb />so many black lives. The crucial<lb />question is whether the leadership<lb />exists to mount such an effort.<lb /><lb />A good first step would be<lb />a summit meeting of wise and<lb />dedicated men and women<lb />willing to think about<lb />cre-ative new ways to<lb />approach such problems as<lb />crime and violence, out-of-<lb />wedlock births, drug and<lb />alcohol abuse, irresponsible<lb />sexual behavior, misogyny ?: ,<lb />and so on.<lb /><lb />Addressing issues of values<lb />and behavior within the black<lb />community should not in any<lb />way imply a lessening of the<lb />pressure on the broader<lb />society to meet its legal and<lb />ethical obligations. It should<lb />be seen as an essential<lb />counterpoint to that pressure.<lb /><lb />Most important, it should<lb />be seen as a crucial<lb />component of the obligation<lb />that black adults have to<lb />create a broadly nurturing<lb /> environment in which<lb />succeeding generations of<lb />black children can survive<lb />and thrive. . Despite the<lb />sometimes valiant efforts of<lb />individuals and organizations<lb />across the country, we are<lb />not meeting that obligation<lb />now.
