          <lb />By: Maria: Wright<lb />Edelman<lb /><lb />did we<lb /><lb />The increasing<lb />criminalization of children<lb />has become a major crisis.<lb />Children are being<lb />suspended and expelled<lb />from school and<lb />incarcerated in the juvenile<lb />and adult justice system at<lb />alarming rates, and at<lb />younger and younger ages.<lb />This increased incarceration<lb />is not due to an increase in<lb />serious delinquent or violent<lb />criminal behavior by young<lb />people.<lb /><lb />Juvenile arrests for<lb />violent crimes grew rapidly<lb />in the late 1980s and peaked<lb />in 1994, but then began<lb />falling. Between 1994 and<lb />2003, the juvenile arrest rate<lb />for Violent Crime Index<lb />offenses " murder, forcible<lb />rape, robbery, and<lb />aggravated assault " fell<lb />48% to its lowest level since<lb />1980. So, if actual crime is<lb />not the cause for the rise in<lb />incarceration rates, what is?<lb /><lb />One piece of the puzzle is<lb />the rise of ozero tolerance ?<lb />policies in schools. Schools<lb /><lb />Ja Rule blasts trial against<lb /> Gotti T Bros............0.<lb /><lb />_ Criminalization of<lb />children : How<lb />get here?<lb /><lb />began adopting these policies<lb />in the late 1980s, taking the<lb />term from the war on drugs.<lb />Amidst debate in Congress<lb />over osuper-predators ? and<lb />predictions of a coming and<lb />dramatic surge in juvenile<lb />crime that never materialized,<lb />these policies hit the national<lb />level when former president<lb />Bill Clinton signed the Gun-<lb />Free Schools Act of 1994,<lb />requiring a one-calendar year<lb />expulsion for possession of a<lb />firearm and referral of law-<lb />violating students to the<lb />juvenile or criminal justice<lb />systems. Most states and<lb />local school districts<lb />responded to the new law by<lb />broadening the mandate of<lb />zero tolerance beyond the<lb />federal mandate of weapons<lb />to include drugs, alcohol,<lb />fighting, threats, or swearing.<lb /><lb />Many schools boards<lb />continue to toughen their '<lb />policies, experimenting with<lb />permanent expulsion for<lb />certain offenses. Others have<lb />begun to apply school<lb />suspénsions and expulsions to<lb />behavior that occurs outside<lb />of school.<lb /><lb />ieaeeeeieimemenienenaaiousiint, Tae<lb /><lb />While zero tolerance once<lb />applied to serious offenses<lb />involving safety, it is now an<lb />overarching and catchall<lb />disciplinary approach for real,<lb />perceived and imaginary<lb />weapons and omisbehavior ?<lb />that is defined by highly<lb />subjective terms like<lb /> odisruption ? and odisrespect. ?<lb />Aspirin, Certs, and Midol are<lb />considered drugs. While zero<lb />tolerance has a place as a<lb />response to truly dangerous<lb />behavior, it has become a<lb />danger to children and a<lb />potential way to exclude any<lb />student who may need<lb />individualized help. <p>alias ananalinesintiennetahnmeenatimatecamneiin<lb /><lb />By George E. Curry<lb /><lb />This is the season to be jolly,<lb />but you Td never know it,<lb />considering all the attacks on<lb />Christmas. In a well-intended<lb />but misguided effort to be<lb />more inclusive of other<lb />religions, some government<lb />units, businesses and civic<lb />groups are urging everyone to<lb />stop saying, oMerry<lb />Christmas ? and replace it<lb />with a bland, and presumably<lb />more acceptable, oHappy<lb />Holidays. ?<lb /><lb />This is where I part company<lb />with many of my liberal<lb />friends. The purpose o<lb />Christmas " the :<lb />commercialization issue not<lb />withstanding " is to celebrate<lb /><lb />_ the birth of Jesus Christ,<lb /><lb />which is recounted in the first<lb />chapter of Matthew,<lb />beginning with verse 18.<lb /><lb />As a Christian, I make no<lb />apologies for celebrating my<lb />faith. There is no getting<lb />around it: Christmas is about<lb />the birth of Christ. Period. It<lb />would be the ultimate insult<lb />to relegate Jesus to the<lb />background in an effort not to<lb />offend non-Christians. We<lb />can celebrate the birth of our<lb />Lord and Savior Jesus Christ<lb /><lb />while wishing our Jewish...<lb /><lb />friends, for example, a Happy<lb />Hanukkah. The two are not<lb /><lb />mutually exclusive.<lb /><lb />Like it or not, the reality is<lb /><lb />that this nation was founded<lb /><lb />by Christians and established,<lb />at least in principle, on Judeo-<lb />Christian values. The<lb />Founding Fathers, most of<lb />whom owned slaves, did not<lb />always exhibit the Christian<lb />spirit but they at least held it<lb />up as an ideal. So much so<lb />that our currency still reads,<lb /> oIN GOD WE TRUST. ? At<lb />Christmas, the last people that<lb />should be offended are -<lb />Christians, But that is exactly<lb />what Ts been happening in<lb />recent years.<lb /><lb />A controversy erupted in<lb />Boston recently over what to<lb />call their city Ts 48-foot spruce<lb /><lb />Taking Christ out of<lb /><lb />Christmas<lb /><lb />tree in a December 1<lb />ceremony. The city Ts Web site<lb />called it a oholiday tree ?<lb /><lb />instead of a Christmas tree<lb /><lb />and that touched off an angry<lb />backlash, especially among<lb />Christian conservatives,<lb /><lb />' Evangelist Jerry Falwell told<lb /><lb />Fox television, oThere has<lb />been a concerted effort to<lb />steal Christmas. ? ?<lb /><lb />City officials finally relented.<lb />Boston Mayor Thomas<lb />Menino told reporters that he<lb />would keep calling the spruce<lb />a oChristmas tree. ? He<lb />explained, oI grew up with a<lb />Christmas tree, I Tm going to<lb />stay with a Christmas tree. ?<lb /><lb />Some of the back-and-forth<lb />over what to call the trees,<lb />has taken place with less<lb />fanfare.<lb /><lb />Until the late 1990s, the<lb />lighted, decorated tree on the<lb />West Lawn of the U.S.<lb />Capitol was called a<lb />Christmas tree. Someone<lb />came up with, shall we say,<lb />the bright idea of referring to<lb />it as the Holiday Tree. Now,<lb />House Speaker Dennis Haster<lb />(R-Ill.) has instructed federal<lb />officials to return to the old<lb />name " the Capitol Christmas<lb />Tree.<lb /><lb />Last year, California Gov.<lb />Amold Schwarzenegger<lb />reversed a decision by his, ,<lb />predecessor, former Gov. -"<lb />Gray Davis, and began<lb />referring to the state Ts<lb />Christmas tree, not a Holiday<lb />Tree.<lb /><lb />It Ts astounding how far some<lb />have gone in recent years to<lb />be politically correct " or<lb /><lb /> oincorrect, depending on your<lb /><lb />point of view.<lb /><lb />Last year, the Plano, Texas<lb />Independent School District<lb />banned students from wearing<lb />red and green at their winter<lb />break parties because they<lb />were considered Christmas<lb />colors. Students were<lb />forbidden from exchanging<lb />gifts with religious messages<lb />on them, apparently fearing<lb /> oMerry Christmas ? and<lb />reindeers might offend others.<lb /><lb />While that was happening in<lb />Texas, the Maplewood and<lb /><lb />South Orange, N.J. combined<lb />school system was banning<lb />Christmas carols, even those<lb />about Santa Claus. Christmas<lb />without oSilent Night ? and<lb /> oHark the Herald Angels<lb />Sing? ? I can Tt even imagine it<lb />and I have a pretty lucid<lb />imagination. I suppose that<lb /><lb />- would be tantamount to trying<lb /><lb />to have an Easter egg hunt<lb />without eggs. Ooops, I guess<lb />if we Tre not suppose to make<lb />references to the birth of<lb />Christ, then celebrating his<lb />resurrection is really off-<lb />limits. My bad. .<lb /><lb />Speaking of bad, things got so<lb />bad that a public school in<lb />Wisconsin told students to<lb />change religious words in<lb />Christmas carols for an<lb />upcoming concert. In Jackson<lb />County, Ga., they reportedly<lb />banned certain jewelry, which<lb />would presumably include<lb />pins that read, oJesus is the<lb />Reason for the Season. ?<lb /><lb />Finally, let me address the<lb />political aspects of this<lb />controversy. Make no mistake<lb />about it: the driving force<lb />behind reclaiming Christmas<lb />is conservatives, through such<lb />organizations as the Alliance<lb />Defense Fund and Liberty<lb />Counsel, both affiliated with<lb />Jerry Falwell. The<lb />televangelist and others at the<lb />forefront of this movement<lb />also aetively-Oppose- =~ -<lb />affirmative action and other<lb />social programs that I<lb />support.<lb /><lb />But as a free thinker, I don Tt<lb />take positions only if right-<lb />wingers don Tt take them.<lb />They are not part of my<lb />thought process. We should<lb />take positions because they<lb />are right and not oppose a<lb />view simply because it is<lb />supported by the Right. And if<lb />we get confused, we can<lb />always fall back on: What<lb />Would Jesus Do? -<lb /><lb />Merry Christmas!<lb /><lb />George E. Wynn, Jr.<lb /><lb />December 06 marks the<lb />most significant date in<lb />African-American history "<lb />the 140" anniversary of the<lb />Thirteenth Amendment to<lb />the United States<lb />Constitution, the historic<lb /><lb />proviso that officially ended<lb />Slavery in America,<lb /><lb />On that date in 1865, the<lb />passage of the Thirteenth<lb />Amendment accomplished<lb />something that neither the<lb />Emancipation Proclamation<lb />nor Juneteenth Day could do;<lb />it declared the nonexistence<lb />of slavery in the United States<lb />as the osovereign will of the<lb />people. ? Indeed, Lincoln Ts<lb />Emancipation Proclamation<lb />of Jan. 01, 1863 was no more<lb />than a Presidential<lb />Proclamation which<lb />purported to free only osome ?<lb />of the slaves " those in states<lb />that rebelled against the<lb />Union. And, in at least one of<lb />those states, Texas, the slaves<lb />did not learn of their 1863<lb />granted freedom until the<lb />Union Army arrived there on<lb />June 19, 1865 - thus, setting<lb /><lb />off what is now celebrated as<lb />Juneteenth Day.<lb /><lb />The constitutional<lb />prohibition of slavery in<lb />America did not come about<lb />until Congress began the<lb />ratification-by-the-states<lb />process with a bill passed in<lb />January 1865. With Georgia Ts<lb />approval on December 6,<lb />1865 (North Carolina ratified<lb />it on December 04, 1865),<lb />two-thirds of the states had<lb />ratified this bill, which<lb />became the Thirteenth<lb />Amendment to the US<lb />Constitution with the<lb />following text:<lb /><lb />Sec. 01: Neither Slavery<lb />nor involuntary servitude,<lb />except as a punishment for<lb />crime whereof the party shall<lb />have been duly convicted,<lb />shall exist within the United<lb />States, nor any place subject<lb />to their jurisdiction.<lb /><lb />Oppose Tookie Ts<lb /><lb />Clemency<lb /><lb />By Earl Ofari Hutchinson,<lb />Pacific News Service<lb /><lb />The small crowd of clergy, "<lb />community activists and<lb />death penalty opponents that<lb />gathered in front of the Los<lb />Angeles courthouse recently<lb />was no different than other<lb />groups that for weeks have<lb />kept up the drum beat for<lb />California Gov. Arnold<lb /><lb />- Schwarzenegger to grant<lb /><lb />Stanley oTookie ? Williams<lb />clemency.<lb /> oStay<lb /><lb />There was one very loud<lb />exception. A young African-<lb />American man shouted that<lb />Williams was a thug and a<lb />murderer and should die. He<lb />was not an agitator or a crank.<lb />He represented a body of pro-<lb />death penalty sentiment<lb />among blacks that has seldom<lb />been publicly heard during<lb />the great Tookie debate.<lb /><lb />I was not surprised when |<lb />heard this young man Ts<lb />words, for there are many<lb />blacks like him who want<lb />Williams dead. The instant I<lb />went to bat in my columns for<lb />clemency for Williams and<lb />against the death penalty in<lb />general, the e-mails and .<lb />comments I got flew hot and<lb />heavy. Black critics bitterly<lb />reviled me for advocating<lb />clemency. They were adamant<lb />that Williams must pay for his<lb />crimes, and for the murder<lb />and mayhem the Crips gang,<lb />which he helped found, has<lb />unleashed on impoverished<lb />black communities.<lb /><lb />Their hardened attitude<lb />toward Williams flew in the<lb />face of conventional wisdom<lb />that says that blacks are<lb />passionate opponents of the<lb />death penalty. They aren Tt.<lb /><lb />During the past decade, even<lb />as more whites have said they<lb />are deeply ambivalent about<lb />the death penalty or oppose it,<lb />many blacks continue to say<lb />that murderers, even black<lb />ones, must pay with their<lb />lives. A Harris Interactive poll<lb />in August 2001 found that<lb />nearly half of black<lb />respondents supported capital<lb />punishment. Three years later,<lb />a Gallup Poll found that black<lb /><lb />support for the death penalty<lb />still hovered at close to 50<lb />percent.<lb /><lb />The death penalty debate can<lb />no longer be neatly<lb />pigeonholed into a black<lb />verses white racial divide<lb />issue, and with good reason.<lb />Whites generally are not at<lb />risk from black criminals.<lb />Other blacks are. They are<lb />more likely to be victims of<lb />violent crime or to have<lb />friends or relatives who have<lb />been crime victims than<lb />whites.<lb /><lb />The Justice Department Ts<lb />annual crime victim surveys<lb />have consistently found that<lb />blacks are nearly twice as<lb />likely to be victims of murder<lb />than whites. The leading<lb />cause of death among young<lb />black males under age 24 is<lb />homicide. In nearly all cases,<lb />other blacks will kill them.<lb /><lb />Blacks are scared stiff and fed<lb />up with that continuing surge<lb />in murder violence that tears<lb />at black communities. A hint<lb />of that came in June 1999, A<lb />Justice Department survey<lb />that year found that blacks in<lb />a dozen cities generally<lb />applauded the police. This<lb />confounded some black<lb />leaders who, like many<lb />others, assumed that blacks<lb />are inveterate cop haters,<lb /><lb />They aren Tt. They are against<lb /><lb />racist and abusive police<lb />officers, and expect and<lb />demand efficient, fair<lb />policing in their communities.<lb /><lb />In Los Angeles, New York,<lb />Chicago and other cities,<lb />community activists have<lb />staged anti-murder marches,<lb />held vigils and have lobbied<lb />city and state officials for<lb />tougher gun laws. They have<lb />also taken a step that once<lb />would have been considered<lb />racial treason: They have<lb />repeatedly demanded that<lb />blacks break their code of<lb />silence toward the police and<lb />help them identify the young<lb />shooters.<lb /><lb />Then there Ts the myth of the<lb /> osoft ? black juror. It goes like<lb />this: Black jurors are so<lb />hateful of white authority that<lb /><lb />they will gleefully nullify the<lb />law and let a black |<lb />lawbreaker waltz out of court<lb />a free man or woman, even if<lb />that person is a killer. This is<lb />nonsense. In most big cities,<lb /><lb />blacks make up a majority or<lb /><lb />a significant percent of those<lb />who sit on juries, and they<lb />routinely convict other blacks ~<lb />of crimes, including murder,<lb />every day. It Ts true that in past<lb />years, blacks were the<lb />staunchest opponents of<lb />capital punishment.<lb /><lb />They had good cause to be.<lb />The death penalty was a<lb />blatantly racist weapon<lb />wielded by prosecutors,<lb />particularly in the South,<lb />against blacks convicted of<lb />rape and murder on the<lb />flimsiest of evidence, as long -<lb />as their alleged victims were<lb />white. The death penalty is<lb />still used and handed down in<lb />a racist fashion. However,<lb />crime fears and rampaging<lb />murder rates in many black<lb />communities have partially<lb />trumped that, and made more<lb />blacks than ever regard<lb />capital punishment not as a<lb />weapon to hammer blacks,<lb />but to hartimer violent.<lb />criminals. ~<lb /><lb />Tookie certainly no longer fits<lb />the label of the violent<lb />predator. He has tirelessly<lb />worked to redeem his life,<lb /><lb />and those of countless other<lb />angry, violence-prone youths.<lb />But many blacks have lost<lb />friends and loved ones to<lb /><lb />those gun-toting youths. They ©<lb />are unforgiving and unsparing<lb />in their rage at them, and they<lb />blame Williams for helping to |<lb />spawn them.<lb /><lb />It Ts unfair to blame one man<lb />for the sins of some in the<lb />youth generation. But when<lb />the body count rises, people<lb />look to place blame on<lb />someone, and Williams is that<lb />someone. It Ts only a short step<lb />from there for them to loudly<lb />say that Tookie must die.<lb /><lb />Earl Ofari Hutchinson is an<lb /><lb />author and political analyst.<lb />He is the author of The<lb />Crisis in Black and Black T<lb />(Middle Passage Press).<lb /><lb /></p>

The projected racial<lb />student population was<lb />extremely accurate and it was<lb />reflected that the student racial<lb />population would become<lb />increasingly black. It was<lb />known at that time where the<lb />greatest growth would take<lb />place in Greenville and Pitt<lb />County, and that the racial<lb />population would be'very close<lb />to what it actually is.<lb /><lb />In spite of the availability of this<lb />valuable planning information,<lb /><lb />the Pitt County Board of<lb />Education continuously failed to<lb />use this information to initiate<lb />long-range plans to build -<lb />schools in areas equally<lb />accessible by black and while<lb />students in the various school<lb />districts. The preponderance of<lb />schools has been built in the<lb />south and southeast areas of Pitt<lb />County. No public schools have<lb />been built in or adjacent to black<lb />neighborhoods since the racial<lb />integratign of our schools in the<lb />late 1960s, Naturally, such overt<lb />discrimination has placed the<lb /><lb />e<lb /><lb />~ preponderance of busing on<lb /><lb />those black students and those<lb />white students who live in areas<lb />remotely located from the<lb />schools being constructed.<lb /><lb />Neighborhood schools in Pitt<lb />County mean segregated schools<lb />in Pitt County. No one will ever<lb />be able to imagine what it is like ?<lb />to have to walk miles to school<lb />while white students rode in nice<lb />heated buses and shouted<lb />vulgarities at us. No one could<lb />imagine what it is like to have to<lb />wait for used books from white<lb />schools in order to have books to<lb />use. No, no one should ever have<lb />to stay in school all day without<lb />having anything to eat or drink.<lb />To have a school facility with no<lb />indoor toilets, drinking water, etc,<lb />No, neighborhood schools should<lb />never be an option.<lb />EDCARTER Greenville<lb /><lb />Suejette Jones<lb />Licking the Whites "Only<lb />Christmas Stamp |<lb /><lb />As Black Santa Clauses<lb />make special appearances at<lb />inner city elementary<lb />schools, supermarkets,<lb /><lb />neighborhoods and parades,<lb /><lb />the United States Postal<lb /><lb />Service has been distributing |<lb /><lb />a white-only line of Santa<lb /><lb />postage customers, received<lb />in your mail the opportunity<lb />to order stamps through the<lb />local postmaster. If for<lb />example, if you like research,<lb />if you like the technicalities<lb />of finding out why this or that<lb />in the other and you hate<lb />being bothered with people,<lb />don Tt go in to enter the<lb />primary care specialties,<lb /><lb />pediatrics, internal medicine -<lb /><lb />or family practice. But that was implicit<lb />in her remarks.<lb /><lb /> oWe must bring terrorists to<lb />Justice wherever possible, ?<lb />she said. oBut there have been<lb />many cases where the local<lb />government cannot detain or<lb />prosecute a suspect, and<lb />traditional extradition is not a<lb />good option. ?<lb /><lb /> oIn those cases, ? she added,<lb /> othe local government can<lb />make the sovereign choice to<lb />cooperate in the transfer of a<lb />suspect to a third country,<lb />which is known as a<lb />rendition.<lb /><lb /> oSometimes, these efforts are<lb />misunderstood, ? she said.<lb /><lb />News reports starting early<lb />last month said the Central<lb />Intelligence Agency began<lb />holding dozens of terror<lb />suspects in secret prisons in<lb />as many as eight European<lb />nations shortly after Sept. 11.<lb />The Administration has not<lb />confirmed the reports but has<lb />repeatedly maintained that it<lb />is abiding by American law<lb />and international agreements.<lb />Officials have also repeatedly<lb /><lb />Rice Chides<lb />Europeans on<lb />Detention<lb />Center |<lb />Complaints<lb />said that the United States<lb />and the European states share<lb /><lb />a common concern about<lb />terrorism.<lb /><lb />_ oThe terror threatens all of<lb /><lb />us, ? Stephen Hadley, the<lb /><lb />National Security Advisor,<lb /><lb />said on CNN on Sunday.<lb /> oYou had seen terror attacks<lb />in Britain, in Spain, in Italy,<lb />in Turkey, in Russia, in Egypt,<lb />in Jordan, in Saudi Arabia.<lb />This is a threat, really, to the<lb />civilized world. We need to<lb />cooperate together to deal<lb />with this terror threat that<lb />threatens all of us. We are<lb />cooperating with a number of<lb />countries. ?<lb /><lb />The administration Ts secret<lb /><lb />_ detention policy has come<lb /><lb />under attack from the United<lb />Nations, the European Union<lb />and Democrats in<lb />Washington. Jack Straw, the<lb />British foreign secretary,<lb />wrote Ms, Rice the letter from<lb />the European Union last<lb />Tuesday, demanding an<lb />explanation.<lb /><lb />In Congress, Democrats are<lb />calling for an investigation of<lb />the prisons and the treatment<lb />of suspects held there, while<lb />Republicans are pushing for<lb />an investigation to determine<lb /><lb />..who in the government leaked<lb /><lb />the information to the news<lb />media.<lb /><lb />_ The Bush Administration<lb /><lb />began drafting Ms. Rice Ts<lb />statement last week. -<lb />Consultations between<lb />agencies including the White<lb />House, the State Department<lb />and the Central Intelligence<lb />Agency continued through the<lb />weekend and culminated with<lb />a conference call Sunday<lb />night.<lb /><lb />Ms. Rice insisted that the<lb />United States had done<lb />nothing wrong.<lb /><lb />Many of the imprisoned<lb />suspects oare effectively<lb />stateless, ? she maintained,<lb /> oowing allegiance only to the<lb />extremist cause of<lb />transnational terrorism. Many<lb />are extremely dangerous. ?<lb /><lb />She made an effort to frame<lb />the debate as one over the<lb />effectiveness of terror<lb />enforcement and not over the<lb />propriety of holding suspects<lb />indefinitely in secret prisons.<lb /><lb /> oWe consider the captured<lb />members of Al Qaeda and its<lb />allies to be unlawful<lb />combatants who may be held,<lb />in accordance with the law of<lb />war, to keep them from<lb />killing innocents, ? she said.<lb /> oWe must bring terrorists to<lb />justice wherever possible, ?<lb /><lb />»<lb /><lb />The European nations must<lb />decide, she added, whether<lb />they owish to work with us to<lb />prevent terrorist attacks<lb />against their own country or<lb />other countries. ?<lb /><lb />York Times Company<lb /><lb />Nigeria Plane<lb />Crash Kills<lb />103; Most<lb />Were Children<lb /><lb />_By LYDIAPOLGREEN<lb />Published: December 11, 2005<lb /><lb />ELMINA, Ghana, Dec. 10-A<lb /><lb />plane carrying 110 passengers<lb />and crew members crashed<lb />Saturday in Nigeria Ts main oil<lb /><lb />_ city, Port Harcourt, killing all but<lb /><lb />7 of them. <lb />National News: Ham<lb /><lb />While many Hampton University<lb />students were still asleep or<lb />getting ready for an early<lb />morning class, about 40 others<lb />gathered on Dec. 2 to support<lb />seven students who faced<lb />disciplinary charges after<lb />distributing unapproved fliers<lb />last month that advertised an<lb />anti-war protest. Some wore<lb />strips of dandelicn-yellow cloth<lb />tied around their arms, wrists,<lb />legs or, for.one young woman,<lb />her neck. =<lb /><lb />That evening, thé seven students<lb />received the verdicts: For at least<lb />five, it was performing 20 hours<lb />of community service, said two<lb />of the accused students, Iyabo Ali<lb />and John Robinson. Ms. Ali said<lb />she received only a warning.<lb /><lb />The students learned their fate<lb />after being called into the office<lb />of the Dean of Women to pick up<lb />letters revealing the university Ts<lb />decision.<lb /><lb />However, one of the women<lb />students chose not to come for<lb />her letter, Mr. Robinson said,<lb />though he assumed she was .<lb />asked to do community service as<lb />well.<lb /><lb />Mr. Robinson said that any<lb />punishment was unreasonable,<lb />but that they didn Tt have a<lb />problem doing it. oWhat we did<lb />was community service in the<lb />first place, ? he said.<lb /><lb />The seven were part of an anti-<lb />war protest on Nov. 2 at the<lb />Virginia school.<lb /><lb />The hearing before the board of<lb />administrators garnered national<lb />attention. An online petition by<lb />the World Can Tt Wait, an<lb />organization that sponsored the<lb />nationwide anti-war protest, drew<lb />more than 1,000 signatures, many<lb />from university professors, and<lb />from such well-known writers as<lb />Michael Eric Dyson, Jill Nelson<lb />and Howard Zinn.<lb /><lb />Three students from Howard<lb />University in Washington, D.C.,<lb />came to support the students. Mr.<lb />Robinson said the group had<lb />received words of support from<lb /><lb />RED TAG 9<lb />$11,500<lb /><lb />RED TAG a<lb />$19,500<lb /><lb />as far away as Spain. It was moved to<lb />Dec. 2 after administrative<lb />Officials were pounded with<lb />phone calls from outraged<lb />students and organization<lb />representatives.<lb /><lb />Four more students faced similar<lb />charges. University T6fficials<lb />maintained that the students were<lb /> ocajoling ? and oproselytizing, ? as<lb />well as posting fliers unapproved<lb />by university officials.<lb /><lb />The hearing, closed to the public<lb />and news media, began shortly<lb /><lb />pton University students punished for<lb /><lb />DECEMBER | - 16. 2005 page 9<lb /><lb />protesting war |<lb />By Bravetta Hassell<lb /><lb />stated in the Hampton University<lb />- Official Student Handbook (2004<lb />Edition). ... .<lb /><lb />after 9 a.m. The seven students,<lb />along with parents and lawyers,<lb />a few faculty members and a<lb />representative of the American<lb />Civil Liberties Union, sat<lb />straight-faced before the panel<lb />of administrators.<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb /> oNo students were disciplined for<lb />their beliefs. ... Specifically, you lent<lb />lending in North Carolina by urging our<lb />Black Caucus leaders to work to put an<lb />end to these abusive practices within our<lb />state. ? Caan, Theschive, I<lb />was surprised to he you are a<lb />spokesperson for car title loans... Car<lb />title loans are just as abusive as payday<lb />loans in that they charge triple digit<lb />interest rates and trap them in a cycle of<lb />debt. Moreover, title lenders structure<lb />their loans to evade state usury or small<lb />loan rate caps, and they are over-<lb />secured. ?<lb /><lb />Corbett continues, oToday we have<lb />access to credit, but the oterms ? are<lb />abusive and discrimi . Like we<lb />rallied with Rosa Parks, all Black people<lb />need to come together to end these<lb />practices. ?<lb /><lb />In the commercial, Sharpton stands on a<lb />stage by a podium and a United States<lb />flag, as if e's still running for president.<lb /><lb /> oFinally, there Ts someone in Virginia<lb />who will loan money to people the big<lb />guys won't loan to! ? he declares<lb /><lb />boisterously as if doing a campaign<lb />aoe ane cummnetcal was set to<lb />read around the country during the<lb />Christmas season. .<lb /><lb />Corbett said in an interview that in<lb />response to his overtures, Sharpton<lb />invited him to teleconference on the<lb />issue.<lb /><lb /> oThey take advantage of poor people<lb />who are desperate, ? Corbett says.<lb /> oThey charge triple digit interest rates<lb />Just like pay day lenders. In fact, it Ts<lb />worse because the people Ts mode of<lb />transportation is at risk and their most<lb />valuable assets. ?<lb /><lb />After the teleconference, Sharpton said<lb />he decided to wait for even more<lb />specific information from Corbett, but<lb />retains doubts about LoanMax.<lb /><lb /> oYou cannot have a country where only<lb />people with credit can go to banks. I Tve<lb />got busi that can Tt get a bank<lb />loan and they have lucrative businesses, ?<lb />Sharpton says. oThat's exactly my<lb />point. Now, if this company is the<lb />Wrong company, we can debate that and<lb />I will not go forward. But, I Tm not<lb />going to back down at all if the banks<lb />have driven people with altemative<lb />lending services out of business, That<lb />ionately hurts our community.<lb />We have found nothing on the record<lb />against it, nothing to this moment. ?<lb /><lb />Rod Aycox, president of LoanMax,<lb />based in Alpharetta, Ga., says he makes<lb />loans to a half-million people a year at<lb />200 stores in 21 states,<lb /><lb /> oMy product highly competes with<lb />Cvery product out there. If a kept<lb />the money for only two it would<lb />cost them $44, he says, However, that<lb />same $400 loan becomes a $1600 debt,<lb />300 percent, in just one year if the<lb />person is unable to pay it back.<lb /><lb />Aycox says he does not have stats on<lb />how many customers do not pay back<lb />their loans on time, but he says sa<lb /><lb />very small number, He says the actual<lb /><lb /> oThe thing about title loan companies is<lb />that they don Tt take many cars, ?
