<lb />Page 5 The Minority Voice Newspaper November 11 - 25, 2005<lb /><lb />®<lb /><lb />_ The Success of Violence<lb /><lb />By: Tim Butler<lb /><lb />Just about everybody on planet earth knows the story<lb />of gangsta rap star 50 Cent and his rise from obscurity to<lb />the world stage of entertainment. Even if you don Tt listen<lb />to rap music, there Ts a good ehance that you know 50 was a<lb />former drug dealer who was shot nine times and lived to<lb /> tell the tale. A burgeoning music artist, from the very<lb />beginning of his rap career 50 Cent (real name Curtis<lb />Jackson) built a name for himself by getting into feuds<lb />with other more established rap stars. That formula, along<lb />with America Ts continued fascination with hip hop culture,<lb />has made 50 Cent into one of the biggest rap music<lb />superstars in the world. °<lb /><lb />Whether it Ts selling his own albums, producing other artists, creating controversy, or hawking his<lb />G-unit clothing line, the name 50 Cent is forever emblazoned in the public Ts mind. And now comes<lb />what is sure to be one of the biggest movies of this year. This weekend, the story of 50 Cent Ts rise to<lb /><lb />gees fortune comes to the big screen in the form of the Paramount Pictures release Get Rich or.<lb />te Tryin T. :<lb /><lb />_ \ ,Six-time Oscar-nominated Jim Sheridan brings to life the story of an orphaned street kid who makes<lb />his mark in the drug world, only to leave that environment behind in favor of establishing himself as a<lb />Tapper. For the film, art imitates life " much as it does in 50 Ts top-selling records. :<lb /><lb />The movie parallels Jackson Ts own life, in which Marcus (50 Cent) always knew he was going to be "<lb />a rapper. When his mother is murdered, he turns to selling drugs to make ends meet. Thanks to some<lb />influential people in his life " including his grandmother (Viola Davis), Marcus becomes grounded<lb />and is able to maintain some sanity as his world begins to spiral out of control. :<lb /><lb />Living in a virtual hell of his own making, a tragedy that nearly kills him forces Jackson to turn his<lb />life around for the better.<lb /><lb />But before you think that Get Rich or Die Tryin T is completely a copy of 50 Cent Ts real life, think<lb />again. According to the rapper, the movie is a story that is centered around incidents similar to some<lb />of those that happened to him in real life.<lb /><lb />50 Cent burst onto the scene when his debut. album, also titled Get Rich or Die Tryin T , set the record<lb />for the all-time best debut with 900,000 units sold in its first week. Subsequently, the project went on<lb />the be certified six-times platinum. His follow-up album The Massacre debuted at number one and<lb /><lb />~ Went on to sell four million units to date. With The Massacre, 50 Cent became the first artist to have<lb />four songs in the top ten of Billboard Ts Hot 100 since the Beatles in 1964.<lb /><lb />For the movie, director Sheridan (My Left Foot, In America ) views the ultimate story as being one<lb />that runs to a deeper level. Center to the story for him is that the characters all face enormous chal-<lb />lenges " including illness, poverty, and racial bigotry. For him, the movie is more about the whys in<lb />life: Why, there are more single mothers in the Black community than any other community in<lb />America. Why is rap music the way it is? Why was Marcus forced to do what he had to do?<lb /><lb />Producers wanted Sheridan for the job because he understands the concept of struggle " whether it<lb />struggling in Jamaica, Queens or the Bronx - or in the tougher districts of different colors, but the<lb />struggles of trouble, despair, and violence is the same everywhere.<lb /><lb />Terence Winter (The Sopranos) wrote the script for the movie. Producers felt the two-time Emmy<lb />winner for the HBO meb series was most appropriate for the job, considering the parallels between the<lb />Italian gangsta world and the urban gangsta culture. The result was a gritty dramatic screenplay<lb />about a young maii Ts survival in a world against him.<lb /><lb />The film Ts main producer Chris Lighty says the movie Ts title says it all. For the movie makers, Get - 2. i. 4 lg,<lb />Rich or Die Tryin T is all about the universal need to en and Pp reventin qun ats ragé arinking<lb />live the good life. On other levels, its about getting out of the ft |. | -<lb /> hood by any means necessary without getting killed or ending : is easier than YOu think. talk now.<lb />up in jail. oI think every stock broker on Wall Street is living<lb />that life, ? says Lighty. oEvery American is trying to buy a<lb />Mercedes; we Tre all trying to get rich or die tryin T. This is just<lb />50 Ts version of it.<lb /><lb />-: For 50, his.plunge inte the drug trade started after his...<lb />mother Ts death. He went to stay with his grandparents, who did<lb />what they could to keep him on the straight and narrow. oBut I<lb />didn Tt feel like I was where I should be at, so I turned to the<lb />people that appeared to have it all with no problem, ? says the<lb />rapper. oThey were people from my mother Ts life " from<lb /><lb />when she used to hustle. And they would look out for me, and<lb /><lb />do things for me. So that Ts how I started. They were helping<lb /><lb />me to provide for myself. ? . .<lb /><lb />50 Cent says it was the birth of his son that changed his life.<lb /><lb />aq 66 p, 99<lb />Once he was born, his priorities changed. The way he saw it, cat 30 Cent Jackson<lb />he couldn Tt be of much help to his son if he was locked up in __| tives to a screening of his<lb />jail. So he changed his direction and pursued a musical career. movie, oGet Rich or Die<lb /><lb />Tryin, T ? An instrumentalist has to<lb />deal with, and touch, other .<lb />objects "a violin, a piano, etc.<lb />However, singers are the object<lb />of the art, and singing is the most<lb />personal way to express it. It is<lb />you, and you are it. The breath<lb />that is involved with singing is a<lb />technical thing. It is part of the<lb />training that helps to produce the<lb />voice in the best form possible.<lb />But breath, in terms of the Spirit<lb />of God, is really about the sense I<lb />get of being in the hands of God<lb />when I sing. I really do feel I am<lb />in touch with something much<lb />higher than myself, and much<lb />higher than the performance I am<lb /><lb />Edgecombe cont... . .<lb /><lb />In major crimes, we have a one<lb />unsolved homicides, 100%<lb />clearance rate in rapes and<lb />statutory offenses, 88 % clearance<lb />rate in armed robberies and a 30%<lb />clearance rate in breaking/entering<lb />and burglaries. T The detective<lb />division has recovered for<lb />Edgecombe and surrounding<lb />counties in excess of $900,000<lb /><lb />worth of property.<lb /><lb />Along with searches and search<lb />warrants, the narcotics division has<lb />made 200 arrests involving 250<lb />drug charges. The Narcotics<lb />Division has been busy training<lb />and is preparing to gear up for the<lb />continuing fight on drugs. We<lb />hope to see the number of drug .<lb />arrests and charges increase over<lb />the next year.<lb /><lb />There are 53 detention officers and<lb />supervisors and two public health<lb />nurses assigned to the detention<lb />facility. The average daily inmate<lb />population managed by detention<lb />personnel is 230. The number of<lb />federal-inmates being housed in.the<lb />Edgecombe County Detention<lb />Center increased to 100. We have<lb />collected $1,397,280 in revenue<lb />from January 2004 to April 2005<lb />for housing federal and state<lb />inmates.<lb /><lb />A new computer system has been<lb />added in the detention center that<lb />monitors inmates T telephone calls<lb />(the system advises them that the<lb />calls may be monitored). With this<lb />system in place, we have cleared<lb />several cases and have recovered<lb />stolen property. .<lb /><lb />An additional CAD workstation<lb />has been added to Telecommunica-<lb />tions. This workstation will serve<lb />ad backup if one of existing<lb />stations becomes inoperable. It<lb />will be manned in the event the<lb />Emergency Operations Center is<lb />activated.<lb /><lb />Through grant funds and match-<lb />ing funds from the county, we have<lb />continued our quest to technologi-<lb />cally outfit the Edgecombe C ounty<lb />Sheriff's Office with state of the art<lb />equipment. We have continued to<lb />upgrade our computerized records<lb />management system, added five<lb />additional Mobile Data Terminal<lb />(MDT Ts) to patrol vehicles,<lb />equipped each patrol vehicle with<lb />cages, purchased additional digital<lb />cameras, bulletproof vests and<lb />further updated our catalog of<lb />surveillance equipment.<lb /><lb />The Sheriff's Office has two K-9<lb />Units. With drugs being a major<lb />concem within the county and<lb />abroad, the K-9 units will be used<lb />to assist in searches and executing<lb />search warrants.<lb /><lb />Courthouse security has been<lb />tightened with the hiring of two<lb />additional deputies that serve as<lb />courthouse security. An X-ray<lb />machine was donated to the<lb />sheriff's office by the federal<lb />government, which is in full<lb />Operation at the courthouse along<lb />with a metal detector,<lb /><lb />We have implemented and<lb />equipped a MIRT Team that will<lb />respond to natural disasters when<lb />requested by other agencies to<lb />assist with manpower needs.<lb /><lb />This past year has been a year of<lb />extensive training for the Sheriff's<lb />Office, especially with the SRT<lb />Team. We hope to use this<lb />renewed knowledge to better serve<lb />the citizens of Edgecombe County.<lb /><lb />November 11 - 25, 2005<lb /><lb />giving. I am in the hands of<lb />God, who guides me far beyond<lb />any technical expertise I may<lb />have. A.<lb /><lb />I never go out onto the stage<lb /><lb />- without praying. I have to have<lb /><lb />that moment beforeIgo<lb />onstage, because I will not go<lb />out without letting God know I<lb />need his strength. One night, I<lb />was supposed to perform, and |<lb /><lb />was very ill. This happened in<lb />Dallas. It was the opening of the<lb />wonderful new hall there, in<lb /><lb />1989. My recital was supposed to -<lb /><lb />be the first one held there, As<lb />always, I took time to pray<lb /><lb /> T before, and somehow I was able<lb />_ to get to the stage. I leaned on the<lb /><lb />piano because I was very weak<lb />and ill, and I prayed silently after<lb />each note, as if saying to God,<lb /> oIt Ts really not up to me alone;<lb /><lb />It Ts up to you and me. ? J will<lb />always remember that night,<lb />because I probably did the best<lb />singing I have-ever done. With<lb />every note, I felt'God Ts presence.<lb />After the performance, I was<lb />taken to a hospital and diagnosed<lb />with diverticulitis.<lb /><lb />I think all artists are vessels and<lb />we are guided in the way we<lb />express our art. I feel so grateful<lb /><lb />to. God that He gave me the gift of<lb />being able to'sing. I cannot<lb /><lb />_ believe that any artist does not<lb /><lb />acknowledge that his or her art<lb /><lb />was a gift from God. It has been/<lb /><lb />said of the composer Giuseppe<lb />Verdi that he was an agnostic. |<lb />do not believe you can compose<lb />the Verdi Requiem and be an<lb />agnostic. Whenever I sang the<lb />Requiem, my own experiences<lb />atid my total belief in the omnipo-<lb /><lb />tent merged so completely.<lb />Conductors have told me it<lb />seemed as if I were having an out-<lb />of-body experience when I sang<lb />it "that I was someplace else,<lb />though of course, always in the<lb />music, but outside the notes, In<lb />every. performance I have ever<lb />done of Verdi Ts Requiem, it felt as<lb />if God wrote every flote.<lb /><lb /> Excerpted from Inspired: The .<lb />Breath of God by Joanna Laufer<lb />and Kenneth S:-Lewis. <lb />Lewis Adams........<lb />Tuskegee Ts<lb /><lb />Real Founder<lb />N<lb /><lb />Lewis Adams was born to a<lb />slave woman (Black) and a white<lb />planter named Jesse Adams in<lb />Macon County, Alabama. He was,<lb />for his time a privileged Black.<lb />man. His father took him to live<lb />in the main house on the planta-<lb />tion, but he was not allowed to<lb />attend classes. He never received<lb />any formal educations but he<lb />studied mathematics and learned<lb />to read and write English, French,<lb />_ German, and Spanish from books<lb />_ that belonged to his White<lb />' brothers and sisters. He also<lb />understood that pratical skills are<lb />» Valuable and he learned the trades<lb />_ Of blacksmith, tinsmith, harness<lb /><lb />maker and shoemaker.<lb /><lb />After the Civil War, Adams<lb />married a local woman and moved<lb />into a house that his father gave<lb />him. He plied his trades in a<lb />small shop nearby and by the late<lb />1870 Ts there was hardly a<lb />household in Macon County that<lb /><lb />did not contain a pot, pan, shoe or<lb />tin roof made by him. Adams<lb />provided work for several Black<lb />Carpenters who were hired to roof<lb />local businesses, and he taught his<lb />skills to many young African-<lb />American men. | ,<lb /><lb />He was a member of AME Zion<lb />Church where he taught Sunday<lb /><lb />_ School to his 16 children as welll<lb /><lb />as those who had attended church.<lb />There was a shortage of teachers<lb />because Tuskegee was a farm<lb />community. However, Adams was<lb />determined to provide an educa-<lb />tion for Black children so in his<lb />Sunday school besides réligion, he<lb />also taught the three r Ts: reading,<lb /> riting and rithmetic. Still he<lb />wanted more for Black people.<lb /><lb />White children in Tuskegee had<lb />decent and well-kept schools to go<lb />to; Blacks (children and adults)<lb />had to travel elsewhere for a<lb />decent education. Apparently<lb />Adams believed that the state<lb />senate and house elections would<lb />usher in an era of change. The<lb />Democrats were in trouble and<lb />Wilbur Foster, the Macon County<lb />Democratic Committee chairman<lb />and a former confederate officer<lb />was in danger of losing his seat in<lb />the Alabama Senate. Adams<lb />knew that Black voters outnum-<lb />bered White voters three to one in<lb />the Macon County. So when<lb />Foster approached him about<lb />Black support in the county,<lb />Adams struck a deal. When<lb />Foster asked Adams, oWhat would<lb />you want for securing the Black<lb />vote for me? ? Instead of asking<lb />for money, Adams told Foster that<lb />he wanted an educational institu-<lb />tion for his people.<lb /><lb />Nominations for the 2005 Citizen of the Year<lb /><lb />- November 2005<lb /><lb />The Chamber is now seeking<lb />nominations for the 2005 Citizen<lb />of the Year. Citizens and<lb />Chamber members are encour-<lb />aged to nominate persons they<lb />feel are deserving of this recogni-<lb />tion. The Greenville-Pitt County<lb />Chamber of Commerce annually<lb />presents its CITIZEN OF THE<lb />YEAR AWARD to honor a man<lb />or woman who has made signifi-<lb />cant contribution to the<lb /><lb />Greenville-Pitt County commu-<lb />nity. Presented at the Chamber Ts<lb />Annual Membership Celebration,<lb />the award represents a prestigious<lb />recognition:by the community of<lb />the recipient Ts commitment and<lb />dedication to the advancement of<lb />the Greenville area.<lb /><lb />To be considered for the award.<lb />the nominee should be someone<lb />who enjoys a reputation for<lb />contimuous community service in<lb />areas such as civic involvement,<lb /><lb />By: Yussuf J. Simmonds &<lb />Dr. Brenda Flanagan<lb /><lb />Another politician, Arthur L.<lb />Brooks, a local newspaper<lb /><lb />. publisher, was also in jeopardy of<lb /><lb />losing his seat in the House of<lb />Representatives and went to<lb />Adams for the Black vote. As<lb />with Foster, Adams wanted money<lb />for an educational center for Black<lb />people. Foster and Brooks both<lb />won their seats with solid backing<lb />from the Blacks in Macon County<lb />and Brooks introduced a bill to<lb />fund a college for Blacks shortly<lb />he réttimed to office. In February<lb />1881, Rufus W. Cobb, the gover-<lb />nor of Alabama, signed a law<lb />appropriating $2,000. a year for a<lb />school for Black teachers. It was<lb />called Tuskegee Normal and<lb />Industrial Institute and it was<lb />administered by three commis-<lb /><lb />-Sioners " two Whites and a Black,<lb /><lb />Lewis Adams. On the recommen-<lb />dation of General Samuel<lb />Armstrong of Hampton Institute,<lb />and the good reputation of Lewis<lb />Adams, Booker T. Washington got<lb />the nod and was appointed to the<lb />helm.<lb /><lb />In his autobiography, Up From<lb />Slavery, Washington said the<lb />following about Adams, oI Tve<lb />always felt that Mr. Adams, in a<lb />large degree, derived his unusual<lb />power of mind from training given<lb />his hands in the process of<lb />mastering well three trades during<lb />the days of slavery. ? Lewis<lb />Adams taught classes at Tuskegee<lb />for many years. Had he not<lb />understood, early on, the need for<lb />higher education for Blacks and<lb />had he not finally understood the<lb />potential strength of the Black<lb />vote, there might never have been<lb />a Tuskegee University. He died in<lb />church on a Sunday at 63 years<lb />old.<lb /><lb />quality of life improvement,<lb />support of business and economic<lb />development and humanitarian<lb />issues.<lb /><lb />Nomination forms are available at<lb />the Chamber office and must be<lb />submitted by January 6, 2006. the<lb />award will be presented at the<lb /><lb />- Annual Membership Celebration,<lb /><lb />to be held on January 26, 2006.<lb />Ghee viar.<lb /><lb />J<lb /><lb />Page 13 The Minority Voice Newspaper November 11 - 25, 2005<lb /><lb />HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM THE STAFF AND MANAGEMENT OF THE<lb />MINORITY VOICE NEWSPAPER AND WOO<lb />LEGENDS OF THE PAST....... oo<lb /><lb />W 1340 AM |<lb /><lb />tenn<lb />Tartmara. Roots run deep ina<lb />nation founded by ex-slaves from<lb />America. |<lb /><lb />Liberians living in the United<lb />States took the Jead in monitoring<lb />the results of the Nov. 8 runoff<lb />election that pitted former finance<lb />minister Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf<lb />against former soccer hero George<lb />Weah. The two rose from 22 total<lb />candidates in the primary election<lb />held in mid-October.<lb /><lb />The people have spoken and Ellen<lb />Johnson-Sirleaf is their oman, ?<lb />having amassed almost 60 percent<lb />of the vote in an election that<lb />hopes to restore democracy to the<lb />civil-war ravaged nation.<lb /><lb />on<lb />Johnson-Sirleaf becomes Africa's<lb />only female president and one of<lb />the few woman heads of state in<lb />the world.<lb /> oIt Ts a big task. I Tm aware of the<lb />enormity of this, ? Johnson-Sirleaf<lb />said in an interview according to<lb />The Associated Press. oBut I also<lb />think that I Tm up to the task. ?<lb /><lb />So does Hurst resident and<lb />Liberian American James<lb />Coleman.<lb /><lb /> oT think Ellen is prepared from her<lb />day of swearing in to communi-<lb />cate with President Bush and with<lb />the people of Liberia in a manner<lb />to bring the people back to their<lb />feet, ? said Coleman. oI Tm happy<lb />to see Liberia actually take the<lb />lead in promoting democracy for<lb />all of Africa. ?<lb /><lb />Eric Nimely, president of the<lb />Liberian Community Association-<lb />DFW, also felt that Johnson-<lb />Sirleaf was the best possible<lb />candidate to represent Liberia.<lb /><lb /> oEllen Johnson is very credible to<lb />the international community. She<lb />has us looking good to the world<lb />economy, ? said Nimely, but he<lb />recognizes the challenges before<lb />her.<lb /><lb /> oI have no doubt that she has a lot<lb />to prove, ? he said. oIf jobs are not<lb />created and families not able to<lb />put food on the table, she can lose<lb />control right away. ?<lb /><lb />Having lived in America since<lb />1978, Coleman, 52, has watched<lb />with pain his homeland go<lb />through several stages of civil<lb />unrest since he left.<lb /><lb /> oWe have not been happy with the<lb />way things have been going over<lb />there, ? said Coleman, whose<lb />great-great grandfather, William<lb />Coleman was Liberia Ts president<lb />from 1896-1900.<lb /><lb />The country Ts 19th president,<lb />William Tolbert; was overthrown<lb />and assassinated by Samuel Doe<lb />in 1980, the first time the usually<lb />peaceful country went under<lb />military rule. Doe himself would<lb />be assassinated in 1990, his<lb />regime replaced by mili<lb /><lb />warlord Charles Taylor. That put<lb />Liberia into a civil war with<lb />Taylor fighting off different<lb />factions. An election was held in<lb />1997 with Taylor easily defeating<lb />Johnson-Sirleaf, but many say<lb />Taylor intimidated his way to the<lb />win because many citizens feared<lb />death if they voted against him.<lb />Rebels finally defeated Taylor,<lb />forcing him into exile in Nigeria<lb />in 2003 and enabling the country<lb />to set up a caretaker government<lb />and the recent elections, where<lb />former President Jimmy Carter<lb />served as one of the election<lb />monitors. Johnson-Sirleaf was<lb />Tolbert Ts finance minister and .<lb />barely escaped death herself when<lb />the coup took place. She left the<lb />country briefly but returned and<lb />was jailed by Doe for being critical<lb />of him while running for a senate<lb />seat. Although losing to Taylor in<lb />1997, her courage for standing up<lb />against him earned her the<lb />nickname of oIron Lady. ?<lb /><lb />Both Nimely, a respiratory care<lb />practitioner at Cook Children Ts<lb />Hospital in Ft. Worth, and<lb />Coleman, manager of the supplier<lb />diversity program with Verizon,<lb />looked at Johnson-Sirleaf's gender<lb />as a plus.<lb /><lb /> oShe's a good role model for<lb />females to show that they can lead<lb />as well, ? said Coleman.<lb /><lb /> oPeople look at Africa as a male-<lb />dominated society, ? said Nimely.<lb /> oThis paves the way to open more<lb />doors not only for women in<lb />Libetia but all of Africa. ?<lb /><lb />Liberia was founded by freed<lb />slaves sent over from the United<lb />States between 1822 and 1847.<lb /><lb />Fi Pigs 14., The Minority Voice Newspaper.
