Many of the police officers<lb />milled around outside with the<lb />crowd, joking. Inside, fifty guards<lb /><lb />with guns waited downstairs.<lb /><lb />being ripped from the wall, and a<lb />mob of about fifty men beat Tho-<lb />mas Shipp senseless and dragged<lb />him into the street. The waiting<lb />crowd came to life. T It seemed to<lb />Cameron that all of those ten to<lb />fifteen thousand people were try-<lb />ing to hit him all at once. T The dead<lb />Shipp was dragged with a rope up<lb />to the window bars of the second<lb />victim, Abram Smith. For twenty<lb />minutes, citizens pushed and<lb />shoved for a closer look at the<lb /> dead nigger. T By the time Abe<lb />Smith was hauled out he was<lb />equally mutilated. Those who<lb />were not close enough to hit him<lb />threw rocks and bricks. Somebody<lb />rammed a crowbar through his<lb />chest several times in great satis-<lb />faction. T Smith was dead by the<lb />time the mob dragged him like a<lb />horse to the courthouse square and<lb />hung him from a tree.
