We<lb />touch probably about 600,000 to<lb />700,000 kids a year, which is<lb />considerable," says Marc Moral,<lb /><lb />resident and CEO of the National<lb /><lb />'rban League.  For example, we have<lb />a male responsibility progratl that we<lb />tun in Chicago. | said to the director,<lb />"How many people do you serve in a<lb />year? ? He said, "300." 1 said,  oHow<lb />many could you serve" He said, "Awe<lb />man, I could serve 5,000 if I had the<lb /><lb />- him as<lb /><lb />  Hillary?" :<lb />4 It can be said that Republicans -<lb /><lb />ll twill also<lb />nocrats to pound<lb /><lb />tate import. Hllinois ts no<lb /><lb />Democrats. It's a highly contested,<lb /><lb />key battleground state. Where are the elitist<lb />classists to- give therm T choices when<lb />the Armed Forces recruiters of the<lb />drug dealers or the gangsters come<lb />a-knockin? Where were the elitists in<lb />the 1990's when urban schools began<lb />to fall apart and programs designed<lb />to give poor people choices<lb /><lb />evaporated?<lb />I know where they were.<lb /><lb />Greek letter sororities, has operated<lb /><lb />its Ivy Reading Academy for grades<lb /><lb />.<lb /><lb />K-3 for nearly two years with $1.5<lb />million trom the U.S. Department of<lb />Education.<lb /><lb />Linda White, AKA s national<lb />president, eagerly explains why her<lb />organization chose to focus on the<lb />early years of a child Ts life.<lb /><lb />Children who have ~ not<lb />developed the basic reading skills in<lb />the very early years find it extremely<lb />difficult, to become competent<lb />readers in the later grades," she says.<lb />*And when they are unable to read<lb />effectively, then they don't perform<lb />well in the other subjects and other<lb />higher-level educational tasks and<lb />they don't finish school, they can t<lb />function in society."<lb /><lb />Delay Davis, a sergeant in the<lb />East Orange, N.J. police department<lb />and executive of the<lb /><lb />department's (Together<lb /><lb />their fans and to<lb />negative images with socially positive<lb />ones. That happened most<lb />notably in the T election in 2002 of<lb />Lt. Govs. Michael Steele in<lb />Maryland and Jennette Bradley in<lb />Ohio. In the July Georgia Senate<lb />primary, black Republican Herman<lb /><lb />Absent. .<lb /><lb />But they will show up to a<lb />tubber-chicken dinner all bathed and<lb />greased to honor those in the<lb />community who are already<lb />equipped with skills to make their<lb />way to the top of the heap.<lb /><lb />Integration opened the<lb />floodgates for the best and the<lb />brightest to flee our communities.<lb />Black entrepreneurs close or<lb />abandoned business and so-called<lb />middleclass families evaporated from<lb />the hood of dreams of "movin' on<lb />up" were pursued vigorously,<lb /><lb />Currently, the most<lb />impoverished of Blacks huddle  in<lb /> ghettos filled with the unemployed<lb />and the underemployed. A strong<lb />disconnects between. them and. the<lb />rest of Black society is growing each<lb />day, along with a strong distrust. Yet,<lb />many so called "progressive" Blacks<lb />now rail against impoverished Blacks<lb />without attempting to understand<lb />their conditions.<lb /><lb />It took the Black church well<lb />into the 1990's to begin to address<lb /><lb />Redirecting Youth) program, is using<lb />the police department to help rather<lb />than lock up troubled youth.<lb /><lb />"They come every day and  they<lb />go straight to the police department.<lb />We give them access to the Intemet.<lb />They do their homework at the police<lb />station. My staff comes from behind<lb />the desk and the children take over.<lb />We teach them office skills. We show<lb />them value and love," Sgt. Davis says.<lb /><lb />"We call it giving an overdose of<lb />support services tor that child. In<lb />other words, while. the parents may<lb />be drug addicted, it doesn't mean that<lb />child can't make it. They may say,  I<lb />go to the gang because it's<lb />protection. I go to the gang because<lb />they feed me. 1 go to the gang<lb />because it's my family." What we're<lb />going to have to do is make sure that<lb />child is eating every day, that we<lb />remove all ot the factors that our<lb />children have told us as reasons for<lb /><lb />.. that would be the start of it.<lb /><lb />Yet, when we boil it all down, in a<lb />best case scenario, it will take the type of<lb />social and cultural development that will<lb />need to evolve down through at least<lb />one generation before the results are<lb />realized. Then Colleen McGlone led<lb />the family in singing the familiar song,<lb />"The More We Get Together" (the<lb />happier are we). Afterwards, Minister<lb />Cynthia Savage offered prayer. Hosts<lb /><lb />and _ hostesses Brittany Cherry,<lb />Shaniqua Cherry, Doris Knight,<lb />Ophelia Lee, Benji McGlone, Titus<lb /><lb />McGlone, Brian Peele, Dexter Peele,<lb />Latoya Peele, and Charles Ramsey, lit<lb />were on hand to welcome family, assist<lb />wherever needed, and/or serve as<lb />parking valets. Frank was the<lb />oldest son of William Whitman Peele.<lb /><lb />Saturday's reunion activities<lb />culminated with Bingo and awesome<lb />prizes for the winners. On Sunday,<lb />the family enjoyed Sunday school arid<lb />worship at Mount Olive Baptist<lb />Church in Lewiston, the church from<lb />which most of the Peles emanated.<lb /><lb />Later in the afternoon, the family<lb /><lb />gathered for a banquet at Cobbs<lb />Comer/Holiday Inn in Williamston,<lb />NC. Thomas Savage, Jr. was the<lb />emcee for the banquet. Frank<lb />Jackson, Sr. gave a heartfelt<lb />invocation.<lb /><lb />Early in the banquet, a memorial<lb />service led by J. Keith Hancock<lb />allowed the family to remember the<lb />beloved deceased family members.<lb />Carmen Warren sang most beautifully<lb /><lb />"I Believe I Can Fly". Bernice Lee<lb />Perry welcomed the family to the<lb /><lb />banquet and Anthony Glenn Peele '<lb /><lb />offered grace. Once again, the family<lb />enjoyed a delicious dinner, this time-a<lb />bit more "dressy" than Saturday's<lb /><lb />casual picnic. Still, pe casualness OE<lb /><lb />family  was evider CO<lb />were, given to new  T<lb />retirees,<lb /><lb />oldest/' youngest, "farthest. |<lb /><lb />we have surrounded ourselves with<lb />all that our dreams have envisioned<lb />we find our lives empty and still<lb />without vision we find our lives are<lb />still empty and without meaning.<lb />The promise of the good life is all a<lb /><lb />mirage.
