"Our culture<lb />makes us less likely to report." She<lb />bases this explanation on her own<lb />experiences as a sexual abuse survivor<lb />"three times over," years of counseling<lb />and surveying others, and federal<lb />Statistics.<lb />The black culture she refers to is<lb />a storytelling culture, rooted in the<lb />South before the decline of. American<lb />apartheid. It comes with its own set of<lb />tules. "Blackisms," Norwood calls<lb />them during her presentation. She<lb />cites a few, as many black workshop<lb />participants chant along with her, such<lb />as: "What goes on in this house, stays<lb />in this house. <lb />Protect, don't expose<lb /><lb />Walter B. Jones..<lb /><lb />"Historically, we have learned<lb />the system, which in our minds is<lb />white folks, is not to be trusted," she<lb />says. Historically, she adds, black<lb />people like herself are expected to<lb />protect, mot expose, the black<lb />community.<lb /><lb />Norwood says that when she<lb />finally told her family about being<lb />abused by her stepfather, . they<lb />refused to believe her. Sceking<lb />information about incest and black<lb />women, she went to a public library.<lb /><lb />"When I started in '89 with my<lb />own recovery, there was only one<lb />book I could find, Crossing the<lb />Boundary T by Melba Wilson. I found<lb />nothing else: specifically about the<lb />African American experience,"<lb />Norwood says. She asks for "culturally °<lb /><lb />specific" reasons that black women<lb />remain silent.<lb /><lb />"The sisters don't want to report<lb />the brothers because we know what's<lb />going on in penal institutions, says<lb />Terry L. My<lb />father's from Louisiana, and my<lb />mother's from Arkansas," Robinson<lb />savs, recalling how they reacted to a<lb />news story about a black man who<lb />was accused of sexually abusing a<lb />white woman not far from their<lb />suburban Maryland home.<lb /><lb />"I'm pretty sure my mom's<lb />response was, This is just racism. You see if you are not striving to<lb />Pietra eta a<lb />the sign. After all, why are ing to<lb />HELL cturiped up when you cen ge in<lb />style? Let's take closer look holiness.<lb />The first thing I would like to share with<lb />you about holiness is this: HOLINESS<lb />IS NOT AN OPTION IT'S A<lb />REQUIRMENT. According _to<lb />Hebrews 12:14 we are to "Make every<lb />effort to live in with all men and<lb /><lb />to be holy; without holiness no one will<lb /><lb />see the Lord So the writer of Hebrews<lb />the<lb />necessity of personal, practical holiness.<lb />When the Holy Spirit comes into our<lb />lives at our salvation, he comes to make<lb /><lb />US, should intervene in Sudan s Black genocide<lb /><lb />their homes. The U.S. Agency for<lb />International Development estimates<lb />that nearly 350,000 could die by the<lb />end of the year if nothing is done.<lb />This scenario sounds very similar to<lb />the Rwanda genocide a decade<lb />,ago "where the United States and<lb /><lb />at least a yearning in our hearts to live a<lb /><lb />holy life pleasing to God, we need to |<lb /><lb />seriously question whether our faith in<lb />Christ is genuine. It is true that this<lb />desire for holiness may be only a spark<lb />at the beginning. But that spark should<lb /><lb />-_ grow till it becomes a flame - a desire to<lb /><lb />live a life wholly pleasing to God. True<lb />salvation brings with it a desire to be<lb />made holy. When God saves us<lb /><lb /> through Christ, He not only saves us<lb />--from the penalty of sin, but also from<lb /><lb />its dominion. The whole purpose of our<lb /> salvation is that we be oholy and<lb />blameless in His sight", Ephesians 1:4.<lb />To continue to live in sin as a Christian<lb />is to go contrary to God's very<lb /><lb />for our salvation. One of the writers of<lb />three centuties ago put it like this:<lb />"What a strange kind of salvation do<lb />they desire that care not.for holiness. . . .<lb />They would be saved by Christ and yet<lb />be out of Christ in a fleshly state.... They<lb />would have their sins forgiven, not that<lb /><lb />they may walk with God in love, in time<lb /><lb />to come, but that they may practice<lb />their enmity against Him without any<lb /><lb />- fear of punishment." Holiness, then, is<lb /> Not ni i<lb /><lb />- ~ that would be salvation by works -but<lb /><lb />as a condition of salvation<lb /><lb />ay<lb /><lb />August 4-20, 2004 The Minority Voice Newspaper Page Il<lb /><lb />the United Nations sat on their<lb />hands while 500,000 members of thé<lb />Tutsi ethnic group were slaughtered<lb />over a 90-day period by members<lb />and supporters of the Hutu-<lb />dominated government in Rwanda.<lb /><lb />Why is it that when Black Africans<lb /><lb />are being victimized by the tens of<lb /><lb />thousands, no one intervenes to free<lb />them from tyranny and genocide?<lb />We are quick, however, to intervene<lb /><lb />"You are to give Him the name Jesus<lb />[which means Jehovah is salvation'],<lb />because He will save His | from<lb />their sins" (Matthew 1:21).<lb />Therefore, we may say that no<lb />One can trust in Christ for true salvation<lb />unless he trusts in Him for holiness. This<lb />does not mean the desire for holiness<lb />must be a conscious desire at the time a<lb />person comes to Christ, but rather that<lb />the Holy Spirit who creates within. us<lb />saving faith also creates within us<lb /><lb />| the [<lb />desire for holiness. He sitnply does not<lb />Paul. said,<lb /><lb />self-con t and godly lives in<lb /><lb />_this present. age (Titus 2:11-12). The<lb />salvation. teaches.<lb />living.
