He<lb />is doing righteous work and we<lb />should support him and all of those,<lb />including our dear elder, Robert<lb />Brock, who have fought and<lb />continue to fight for what is right.<lb /><lb />As I was reading an article in<lb />Cincinnati Magazine, titled,  oThe<lb />Baptist Economy, � which noted the<lb /> owild-eyed glee � with which city<lb />officials and the virtually all-White<lb />Cincinnati Convention and Visitors T<lb />Bureau looked at the National<lb />Baptist Convention USA. it<lb /><lb />decreed segregated public schools<lb />unconstitutional, the<lb />performance of black students<lb />continues to trail that of their<lb /><lb />white counterparts.<lb />The 2000 census found that<lb />91.8% of white students<lb /><lb />graduated from high school,<lb /><lb />Je Vice-Presiden t,<lb /><lb />Lee,. Only one member of<lb />the Senate, Democrat Russell<lb />Feingold of Wisconsin, had the<lb />courage to vote against the<lb />legislation. Massachusetts Senator<lb />John Kerry dismisses criticisms<lb />of the act as mere  ohaggling. �<lb /><lb /> oI voted for the Patriot Act<lb />right after September 11th,<lb />convinced that  " with a sunset<lb />clause  " it was the right decision<lb />to make. It clearly wasn Tt a<lb />perfect bill  " and it had a number<lb />of flaws  " but this wasn Tt the time<lb />to haggle. It was the time to act. �<lb /><lb />It is disconcerting when our<lb />civil liberties are likened to<lb />souvenir shopping while on<lb />vacation in a foreign country.<lb />The days and weeks following<lb />September 11th were the worst<lb />possible time to act on legislation<lb />that decreased individual nghts<lb />and increased government nghts.<lb />{ was most certainly tme to<lb />debate how much power<lb /><lb />4 Bovernment should have over the<lb /><lb />Republican effort to<lb /><lb />"top, top prionity."<lb /><lb />One wonders how Gillespie<lb />and his party expect to achieve<lb />such a lofty goal when his party<lb />has such an abysmal record on<lb /><lb /> omany fundamental<lb />Atncan- American issues.<lb />For  " one thing, many<lb /><lb />Republicans have made it clear<lb />over and over that the party<lb />opposes attirmative action. The<lb />Bush administration opposed tt<lb /><lb />gain Black vo<lb /><lb />environment: in faraway places |<lb />like China. Now globalization<lb />has come home. _<lb /><lb />So the first effect that I would the,<lb /><lb />like to mention is the effect that<lb />these economic policies have on<lb />Careers, creating uncertainty for<lb />real people as they watch  more<lb />and more jobs being sent off<lb />shore. .<lb />Estimates run into the millions<lb /><lb />lives of its citizens. Americans<lb />face an uphill battle in protecting<lb />their civil liberties no matter who<lb />wins the presidential election in<lb />November.<lb /><lb />Acronyms like the USA Patriot<lb />Act have a long and dubious<lb />history in the fight against<lb />government controlled domestic<lb />terrorism. The Counter<lb />Intelligence Program, Cointelpro,<lb />sewed seeds of distrust among<lb />the Black Panthers and other<lb />groups and kept activists under<lb />surveillance. Three decades after<lb />its existence the word Cointelpro<lb />evokes images of a teal life<lb />conspiracy so frightening that it<lb />still makes every other conspiracy<lb />theory, plausible or not, difficult<lb />to dismiss.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately American<lb />memonies are short, even in the<lb />Black community. It is easy to<lb />dismiss presidential candidates<lb />from the Yale Skull and Bones<lb />Society, but individuals and<lb />institutions who used to be<lb />thought of as friends are not, and<lb /><lb />should be treated accordingly.<lb />Ministers subjected to<lb />Cointelpro surveillance now<lb /><lb />prove their Chnistian activism<lb /><lb />in the recent U.S. Supreme Court<lb />decision that upheld affirmative<lb />action at the University of<lb />Michigan law school.<lb /><lb />Secondly, Republicans have<lb />fallen short on the issue of racial<lb />profiling, particularly since the<lb />Bush administration took office.<lb /><lb />Attorney General John<lb />Ashcroft, during his March 2001<lb />confirmation hearings, vowed to<lb />product a legislative product to<lb /><lb />Civil<lb /><lb />te<lb /><lb />that some even<lb />continue to get tax breaks when<lb />they leave; and then find that<lb />it careers have been<lb />outsourced?<lb /><lb />In all of my econ courses, I<lb />don't recall any of my professors<lb />ever adding that to the equation.<lb /><lb />Secondly, I am concemed about<lb />the worsening gap between rich<lb />and poor; not just globally, but in<lb /><lb />credentials by extolling the<lb />virtues of an overly violent film<lb />about Jesus whose director says<lb />that Protestants are going to hell.<lb />These same members of the<lb />clergy have forgotten that Jesus<lb />had nothing good to say about<lb />governments or money and yet<lb />they swooned and bowed down<lb />to Caesar to get cold hard cash<lb />doled out through George Bush's<lb />Faith Based Initiative. .<lb />Based Initiative should be do:<lb />away with for no other reason<lb />than its initials are the samigsas<lb />the agency<lb /> aintelpro. A program meant to<lb />help religious groups should not<lb />remind anyone of J. Edgar<lb />Hoover.<lb /><lb />While President Bush uses the<lb />Patriot Act as an election year<lb />tool Black leaders bicker about<lb />whether or not gay marriage is a<lb />civil nghts issue. There are<lb />serious legal and moral issues<lb />involved with granting marriage<lb />rights to same sex couples, but it<lb />won't matter much if the<lb />government doesn Tt need to<lb />show probable cause in order  to<lb />get search warrants and then<lb />doesn Tt have to inform us that we<lb /><lb />is futile<lb />combat racial - profiling, but<lb />nothing has come close to bein<lb />passed into law since Ashcroft's<lb />statement.<lb /><lb />Thirdly, Republicans have<lb />failed the Black community on<lb />economic issues. As<lb />unemployment rose across the<lb />nation, African Americans were<lb />disproportionately affected. In<lb /><lb />June 2003, the unemployment<lb />rate for Afncan Americans<lb /><lb />A Culture of Indifference....<lb /><lb />The following article originally<lb />appeared in The NorthStar<lb />Network.<lb /><lb />White men in power rarely<lb />apologize for their indiscretions.<lb />In fact, in most situations, they<lb />manipulate instances in which<lb />most of us would feel shame and<lb />find ways to profit from their<lb />immoral behavior. Just look at the<lb />Watergate alumni. Richard Nixon,<lb />though _resigni from<lb />ee isgrace, went. on to<lb /><lb />ome a best-selling<lb /><lb />PeThere a other examples. Oliver<lb />North was the shadow behind the<lb />Iran-Contra scandal, betrayed the<lb />nation Ts trust as a military officer,<lb />convicted of a felony and later<lb /><lb />iN as a conservative radio<lb /><lb />and television tlk show host.<lb />Journalist Mike i was<lb />caught fabricating stories as a<lb />Boston Globe ist and was<lb /><lb /> oFrome rewarded with a job on<lb />the MSNBC cable news channel<lb />and an offer from the Boston<lb />Herald. Bill Clinton in a<lb />sexual liaison with a young intern,<lb /><lb />is impeached admittedly for an<lb />indiscretion that doesn Tt rise to<lb />the level the Constitutional<lb />standard of a high crime or<lb />misdemeanor, but shows little<lb />remorse en route to cashing-in<lb />with a multi-million dollar deal<lb />for his memoirs.<lb /><lb />Even when apologies are<lb />offered they tend to be 50 trite<lb />that as soon as the words roll of<lb />the lips they evaporate into thin<lb />air. Such was the case with<lb />President Bush Ts feeble apology<lb />for the abuse of Iraqi detainees at<lb />the Abu Ghraib prison. Not only<lb />was the president slow to show<lb />any remorse for the physical<lb />abuse and humiliation imposed<lb />by members of the U.S. mili 7<lb />when he finally did exhibit a feint<lb />degree of humanity it was in<lb /><lb />ing and communicated to<lb />King Abdullah of Jordan, not<lb /><lb />directly to the Iraqi le.<lb />Adding insult to oo Sectet<lb />of Defense Donald Rumsfel K<lb />under whose watch this shameful<lb />episode as occurred, appears<lb />before members of Congress and<lb />offers a sorry apology on one<lb />hand and displays the utmost<lb />on the other. ne<lb />t become painfully<lb />aware to vay in the Arab world<lb /><lb />7<lb /><lb />is what Black Americans have<lb />known for some time: the United<lb />States has no standing to be the<lb />moral arbiter of the world. Our<lb />experience from slavery to Jim<lb />Crow to the emerging apartheid<lb />state has been of a nation<lb />predisposed to the use of<lb />violence to maintain white<lb />Supremacy. It is naive, at best,<lb />and ignorant, at worst, to believe<lb />that a nation that engaged in the<lb />genocide of American Indians<lb />and the dehumanization and<lb />enslavement of Africans, and<lb />subjugation of their ancestors, is<lb />capable of acting humanely<lb />toward people of color on<lb />another continent. h<lb />There is no getting around this<lb />point. What has, tans ited in<lb />Iraq is part and parcel of the<lb />American experience. It is the<lb />part of our nation Ts history that<lb />is conveniently forgotten by this<lb />war's apologists and the media.<lb />And it 1s our present reality. The<lb />disproportionate incarceration of<lb />African American and Latino<lb />men, many on minor<lb />offenses, and their wo<lb />undes sentencing guidelines that<lb />are patently racist and result in<lb />the warehousing of hundreds of<lb />thousands, provides the context<lb /><lb />for Abu Ghraib. As Yoes the<lb />hundreds of incidents of police<lb />violence and killings of Blacks. Is<lb />there any real difference between<lb />the brutality exhibited by US.<lb />soldiers against Iragi detainees and<lb />what local police departments<lb /><lb />habitually impose upon Blacks The<lb /><lb />across the nation? '<lb /><lb />And  speaki of a ies:<lb />When do ae ours T Even a<lb />lame one at that. It is particularly<lb />offensive to hear government<lb />officials offer an apology, albeit<lb />late and insincere, to oreigners<lb />but trip on their tongues when the<lb />subject of the expenence of Black<lb />African descendants is raised. And<lb /><lb />beljeve me, it Ts not the apo I<lb />cay care about. It Ts  oa<lb /><lb />acknowl t of the pain and<lb />suffering this nation caused my<lb />ancestors expressly to maintain<lb />white privilege, the economic<lb />benefits derived from Blacks T free<lb />and exploited labor, and how that<lb />| transcends generations and<lb />continues to impede Blacks full<lb /><lb />and equal participation in<lb />drug American society. me<lb />What we see in Iraq is simply<lb />our own reflection.<lb />Walter Fields is Publisher of The<lb />NorthStar Network.<lb /><lb />The Faith,<lb /><lb />that  opave ° us �<lb /><lb />percentage point<lb /><lb />Census, more than 34 million<lb />Americans now live below the<lb />poverty line. We will have to take<lb />ministers and politicians to task<lb />when they tell us Wal-Mart is a<lb />good place to work. Elected<lb />officials should be dead<lb />politically if they make asinine<lb />comments such as these when<lb /><lb />,.asked about Wal-Mart's  labor<lb />; Practices:  oI don't know about.<lb /><lb />use I go in there and<lb />shop. I'm not trying to get into<lb />their business � (Bleck hicago<lb />Alderwoman Emma Mitts).<lb /><lb />If ministers are truly concerned<lb />about the state of the Black<lb />family they should also speak out<lb />against a corrections system that<lb />is built to incarcerate as many<lb />Black people as possible. Gay<lb />people can Tt compete with<lb />mandatory minimum drug<lb />sentences in causing damage to<lb />Black families. Taking on. the<lb />powerful is more difficult than<lb />making trite comments about<lb />Adam and Eve versus Adam and<lb />Steve.<lb /><lb />These same preachers will have<lb />to be reminded that Jesus Christ<lb /><lb />surged to 11.8 percent, a full<lb />igher than the<lb />previous month, one of the<lb />biggest jumps in the last two<lb />decades. Today that rate is still<lb />languishing at 10.2 percent while<lb />theoverall U.S. rate is at 5.9<lb />percent.<lb /><lb />Since March 2001, the economy<lb />has lost 24 million jobs. The<lb />manufacturing sector, the one<lb />most responsible for the rise in<lb />the Black middle class, has been<lb />hardest hit. Since March 2001,<lb />300,000 factory jobs held by<lb />Blacks, or 15 percent, have<lb />disappeared, according to the<lb />New York Tunes.<lb /><lb />President Bush's chief response<lb />has been to provide the wealthiest<lb />Americans with huge tax breaks.<lb /><lb />- Close the home ownership<lb /><lb />  Metropolitan<lb /><lb /> of the cae nt<lb /><lb />experience<lb />Conservatively,<lb />four T hoenelcs<lb /><lb />one out of every<lb />males who is<lb /><lb />sleeping in a doorway, alley, or a<lb /><lb />box in our cities and<lb />rural communities has put on a<lb /><lb />: uniform and. served our country.<lb /><lb />Surely America must remember<lb />them. But while our ony<lb />spends one billion dollars a wee<lb />for war, we. can't find money to<lb />provide our vets shelter and a<lb />warm meal?<lb /><lb />In addition to the highest<lb />unemployment in, a  decade and<lb />persistent health care challenges<lb />for those Americans who do have<lb />jobs, a permanent underclass is<lb />being created and that is not<lb />sustainable.<lb /><lb />I'll just recite for you the findin<lb />from several studies published this<lb /><lb />year:<lb />United for a Fair Economy:<lb /> oState of the Dream, 2004 � report:<lb /><lb />states that on some indices, the<lb />racial gap has actually widened<lb />since the murder of Dr. Martin  "<lb />Luther King, Jr. Sadly, it will take<lb />8 years to close the high school<lb />graduation gap; 73 years to close<lb />the college graduation gap; 581<lb />years to close the per capita<lb />income gap; and 1,664 years to<lb />p.<lb /><lb />The New York Times informs us<lb />that nearly half of all black men<lb />aged 16 to 64 in New York City<lb />are unemployed.<lb /><lb />The Chicago Sun-Times tells us<lb />about a Hul! House Report .<lb />entitled, "Minding the Gap: An<lb />Assessment of Racial Dis ity in<lb /><lb />ooo<lb />According to the Sun-Times, "the<lb />report describes two completely<lb /><lb /> Continues on Page 5<lb /><lb />Disobedience<lb /><lb />was killed because he spoke out<lb />against the powerful religious<lb />leaders of his day. If they can Tt<lb />muster the courage to speak for<lb />the estimated 10,000 Iraqi civilians<lb />killed by U.S. military intervention,<lb />we may just have to hold church<lb />in our own living rooms while<lb />they pose for photo ops with<lb />President Bush.<lb /><lb />If we are going to rid ourselves<lb /> othe retrograde,<lb />thé cynical, we<lb />have to start speaking out against<lb />al) of them. Their color and their<lb />Past history  should not change  "<lb />what we say or how we Say tt.<lb />2004 should not be remembered<lb />only for the Olympics, leap year<lb />and a presidential race. Insert Janet<lb />(Damita Jo) Jackson. Let me first say<lb />that I believe her move with Justin<lb /> Tm gonna have you naked by the<lb />end of this song" Timberlake (inset<lb />above) was a well choreographed,<lb />however it was a tacky publicity<lb />stunt to promote her album. Do |<lb />think it was inappropriate? YES! Do<lb />I think she should have apologized a<lb />second time to appear on the<lb />Grammys? .NO! Do I think that by<lb />bringing up this incident again 1<lb />may be playing myself out on some<lb /><lb />The U<lb /><lb />Kobe Bryant<lb /><lb />already over hyped media play?<lb />Maybe... But just hear me out on<lb />this one. -<lb /><lb />We live in a society well<lb />known for _ "its'  "_ erasure,<lb />marginalization and fetishistic<lb /><lb />exoticizing of the Black female .<lb /><lb />(nude) body. So when I consider<lb />Ms. Jackson's major reveal at the<lb />hands of a Black-culture-adoring<lb />wannabe white male who in the<lb />end took no responsibility for the<lb />"wardrobe malfunction," I not only<lb />think about .the corruption of<lb />standards, over which CBS and the<lb />FCC are justifiably going ballistic, I<lb />think about power and pleasure -<lb />who has it and who wants it.<lb /><lb />I only wish that Janet could<lb />think as well as she can tease,<lb />because if she did, she would have<lb />conceived of a way to promote<lb />herself and flip the tables over on<lb />feminism, pop music and sexuality.<lb />She would have rocked the entire<lb />halftime show (who needed Puffy<lb />and Nelly anyway), the way sisters<lb />rock the dance floor when we hear<lb /><lb />- Beyonce's "Baby Boy." Cause when<lb /><lb />Beyonce starts "ooohing" an<lb />"aaahing, � you know it's a wrap!<lb /><lb />Black Exposure<lb /><lb />Omarosa Stalworth<lb /><lb />All of a sudden everyone gets<lb />Caribbean and our dancing<lb />becomes sultry, sexy, and<lb />celebratory, part Josephine Baker,<lb />part Lil T Kim (circa 1999), we<lb />know how to get our swerve on<lb />and still not totally give it up.<lb /><lb />That's the thing with<lb />exposure; the art of it is to not only<lb />control what is shown but to<lb />somehow manipulate the way in<lb />which it is also seen (consumed) so<lb />that the experience remains<lb />self-defined and transformative -<lb />for the guy in the club, for 100<lb />million television viewers and<lb />definitely for oneself.<lb /><lb />So in acknowledging Janet's.<lb /><lb />quasi auspicious album's debut, I'd<lb />like to thank the sisters who knew<lb />way back when that  sometimes<lb />less is more, T and still knew how to<lb />work their magic and use their<lb />beautiful Black bodies to empower,<lb /><lb />Students ata study session at a junior high echool in Petal, Migs., Jan. &amp; 1970. Today, the majority of Black students still<lb /><lb />attend schools that are préedominatély Black. In some schoo! districts, segrog<lb /><lb />by Leland Ware<lb /><lb />The 1954 Brown decision was a<lb />critical turning point in constitutional<lb />law and American race relations.<lb />Many credit the decision. with<lb />sparking the Civil Right revolution<lb />and leading to the enactment of state<lb />and federal laws that ended decades of<lb />- official discrimination and segregation.<lb /><lb />Ronald Walters, a professor of<lb />government. and politics at the<lb />University of Maryland at College<lb />Park, believes the decision had a<lb />"psychological impact � that helped<lb /><lb />African Americans the<lb /><lb />give"<lb />confidence to go on and participate<lb />in the Civil Right Movements."<lb /><lb />The most immediate legacy of<lb />Brown was the restoration of<lb /><lb />principles that underlie the<lb />Fourteenth Amendment," said<lb />Waters. "There is a line between<lb />Brown and the civil rights act of<lb />1964, 1965 an 1968."<lb /><lb />But while the decision may<lb />have led to successful legislation in<lb />the areas of housing, transportation<lb />and public accommodations, schools<lb /><lb />M(y)-VOICE OP/EDs<lb /><lb />Global Vision<lb /><lb />Continues from Page 2<lb /><lb />disparities in income, education,<lb /><lb />housing, transportation, health,<lb />and safety. �<lb /><lb />According to the Hull House<lb />report researched by Loyola<lb />University, it will take 200 years<lb />for the gulf that separates black<lb />quality of life from white quality<lb />of life to close entirely.<lb /><lb />One example cited in the report<lb />"Whites are 125% more likely to<lb />use marijuana than blacks; 181%<lb />more likely to use cocaine; 431%<lb />mote likely to use inhalants; 516%<lb />mote likely to use LSD. And yet<lb /><lb />blacks account for 79% of all drug -<lb /><lb />arrests."<lb /><lb />A University of<lb />report shows that African<lb />Americans are stopped more<lb />often, frequently receive unequal<lb />treatment after being stopped, are<lb />stopped for longer periods of<lb />time, and are searched and<lb />arrested more often.<lb /><lb />A Harvard University study<lb />finds that the quality of health care<lb />varies by race and at a recent<lb />seminar on the subject, one of the<lb />star panelists recommends that<lb />blacks see black doctors to escape<lb />racism in health care.<lb /><lb />Harvard Professor Henry Louis<lb />Gates, in his series "America<lb />Beyond the Color Line," informs<lb />us that a full 40% of all black<lb /><lb />Cincinnati<lb /><lb />children are living at or beneath<lb />the poverty line.<lb /><lb />The Washington Post tells us that<lb />hundreds of chi tested at least<lb />47% higher than the national<lb />average for lead poisoning,<lb /><lb />The most recent report comes<lb />from the National Urban League,<lb />which reports on the State of<lb />Black America, 2004. It reminds<lb />us that over "216 years ago, the<lb />authors of the US Constitution<lb />counted  " enslaved African<lb />Americans as 60% of a white<lb />person. According to the total of<lb />the 2004 Equality Index, the<lb />status of African Americans<lb />today is 73%" that of their white<lb />counterparts.<lb /><lb />Over 200 years of American<lb />Progress equals 73% No<lb />wonder the National Urban<lb />League reports that 40% of<lb />blacks feel little of no<lb />improvement in economics or<lb />social mobility.<lb /><lb />Clearly this is a situation that is<lb />not sustainable.<lb /><lb />Thirdly, I'd like to talk about a<lb />situation that is a growin<lb />problem: sexual slavery and<lb />uman trafficking. One major<lb />side effect of extreme poverty<lb />throughout the world is the<lb />growing crisis of sexual slavery<lb />and human trafficking. A recent<lb />US. Government estimate<lb />indicates that roximately<lb />800,000 - 000 people<lb />annually are trafficked across<lb /><lb />ation is highor than it was in the 608,<lb /><lb />remained segregated for decades and<lb />today are rapidly resegregating as<lb /><lb /> courts end years of desegregation<lb /><lb />orders.<lb /><lb />What went wrong? What<lb />happened to the equal Opportunity?<lb />Fifty years after the landmark<lb />decision, why has the promise of<lb />Brown remained unfilled?<lb /><lb />"The court's ruling against<lb />school segregation encouraged<lb /><lb />African American to believe the<lb />entire structure of White supremacy<lb />was illegitimate and<lb /><lb />legally<lb /><lb />Cynthia Mckinney - speaks about the threats to freedom<lb /><lb />Josephine Baker<lb /><lb />impassion and inspire. After heavily armed<lb />federal troops arrived in tanks and<lb />other military vehicles, the Black<lb />students were finally allowed to<lb />attend classes on Sept. 25. The<lb />National Guardsmen remained on<lb />duty at Central High School<lb />throughout the school year. A similar<lb />confrontation unfolded in Oxford,<lb />Miss., when James Meredith applied<lb />for admission to the University of<lb />Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1961.<lb />When an appellate court ordered<lb />Meredith's admission, Mississippi<lb />Governor Ross Barnett announced<lb />his intention to deny the federal<lb />court's decision, relying on the<lb />"interposition" doctrine, which<lb />allowed an individual state to Oppose<lb />any federal action that it believed<lb />was unconstitutional.<lb /><lb />As a result, when Meredith,<lb />accompanied by federal marshals,<lb />attempted to enter Ole Miss to<lb />register for classes, state officials<lb />blocked his efforts. I don Tt think so.<lb />How can we ask for recompense<lb />trom White-owned companies and<lb />not seck it from Black<lb />organizations that continue to<lb />finance our  "_ oppression by<lb />ig po dollars to cities<lb />where Black people are o sed?<lb />Turnabout is fair play, and in the<lb />case of hundreds of millions of<lb />Black tourism dollars being looked<lb />upon with  owild-eyed glee � by<lb /> hite-dominated convention<lb />centers that get much of their<lb />funding from Black tax dollars,<lb />Our acquiescence to calls from our<lb />organizations (and local Black<lb />polincians) to go against boycotts<lb />1s unconscionable.<lb />Despite the horrendous treatment<lb />of our people, both economically<lb />and otherwise, all over this<lb />country, we continue to mimic the<lb />overseers and the crumb snatchers<lb />ot the past, selling out for a few<lb />dollars, hotel suites, and banquets.<lb />Yes, we must seek reparations<lb />trom anyone and any company<lb />that benefited from the misery of<lb />Black folks. Their leaders<lb />are interested in two things:<lb />Money in their pockets and not<lb />oftending those who give it to<lb />them. They will continue to<lb />finance our oppression, just like<lb />the financiers during slavery, if<lb />we don Tt hold them accountable<lb />for the dollars we give them.<lb />Reparations for oppression?
