          <lb />by Elena Shore "<lb />LOS ANGELES/PNS - For months,<lb />economic forecasters have pointed to<lb />signs of a recovering economy, but<lb />so far it has been a "jobless<lb />recovery." The news last week from<lb />the Labor Department that U S. jobs<lb />went up by 308,000 in March " the<lb />biggest increase int four years " was<lb />received enthusiastically as the first<lb />sign that © jobs were finally<lb />accompanying the recovery.<lb /><lb />But jobs still haven't penetrated<lb />the long-team unemployment of<lb />many Americans. The increase in<lb />jobs is centered primarily in<lb /> part-time work and jobs for workers<lb />under the age of 16 years old. And<lb />many jobs are not evenly spread<lb />among different communities. .<lb /><lb />The average rate<lb /><lb />ving Eastern Nort<lb /><lb />Sautrl<lb /><lb />me:<lb /><lb />ce<lb /><lb />unemployment is up to 5.7 percent<lb /><lb />from 5.6 percent in February,<lb />according to the report. But.it also<lb />indicated that the ate of<lb />unemployment for African<lb />Americans rose to 10.2 percent in<lb />March, and the unemployment rate<lb />for Latinos remained high at 7.4<lb />percent, reported the April 3 edition<lb />of Spanish-language T daily La<lb />Opinion.<lb /><lb />_ Only half of all black men of<lb />working age held jobs, according to<lb />a study by the Community Service<lb />Society of New York, reported in<lb />the February 28 issue of the New<lb />York Times. Some 51.8 percent of<lb />black men were employed,<lb />compared to 65.7 percent of Latino<lb />men and 75.7 percent of white men.<lb />This data got no response fromi<lb /><lb />die White House, writes Julianne<lb />Malveaux in a March 11 editorial in<lb />the Bay Area African American<lb />newspaper The Sun-Reporter, But<lb /> owhat kind of response do we T think<lb />might have been generated if the<lb />headline said that half of all white<lb />men did not have jobs?"<lb /><lb />"Why do so few black men hold<lb />jobs and why are there such large<lb />gaps. between black men and<lb />others? ? she -asks. But the old<lb />responses _ " discrimination "_ and<lb />differences -in education and<lb />training " are only part of the<lb />answer. The other part? Onshore<lb />Outsourcing.<lb /><lb />"When outsourcing takes jobs<lb />out of the United States, it tightens<lb />competition for jobs here," she<lb />writes. "The white man who might<lb /><lb />have been a manager may now be<lb />competing with an African<lb />American man for a service job."<lb /><lb /> Black men aren't the only ones<lb />left out of the increase in jobs.<lb />Unemployment is hitting<lb />white-collar workers hard, reported<lb />the Jewish newspaper. Forward, in<lb />its March 12 issue.<lb /><lb />_ A study released last month by<lb />the Economic Policy Institute and<lb />the Natonal Employment Law<lb />Project reported that during the<lb />past year the long-term<lb />unemployed "those who have been<lb />looking for work for 27 weeks or<lb />more ", disproportionately come<lb />from the white-collar sector, where<lb />many Jewish workers are<lb />concentrated, writes Nathaniel<lb />Popper. .<lb /><lb />start heatin<lb /><lb />up in Easter North Carolina<lb /><lb />from left to ; i tht is C.D.<lb /><lb />ms: oBarber, . Relatively few<lb /><lb />points out that mere are approximately<lb />300,000 suicide attempts and 30,000<lb />suicides in the United States per year<lb />associated with depression.<lb /><lb />What is Bipolar Disorder?<lb /><lb />Also known as a manic-depressive<lb />illness, Bipolar Disorder is a brain<lb />disorder that causes unusual shifts in a<lb />person's mood, energy and ability to<lb />function. Unlike the normal ups and<lb />downs that everyone goes through, the<lb />symptoms are severe. They can result in<lb />damaged relationships, poor job<lb />performance and even suicide.<lb /><lb />"Bipolar is a physical problem of<lb />the brain the same way asthma is a<lb />physical problem of the lungs, ? said Dr.<lb />Frederick Kurth, M.D. in psychiatry.<lb />"When an organ of the body gets ill, the<lb />area where it doesn't work gets affected."<lb /><lb />For example, Kurth, said, "if the<lb />job of the lung is breathing and you have<lb />an illness of the lung, you're going to<lb />have problems breathing,<lb /><lb />Some people don't ¢think it's an<lb />illness. If I'm sad or down, 1 can't tell<lb />anyone because the first thing they<lb />would say ts, what are you sad for?<lb /><lb />"You have a good job, making<lb />good money so why are you feeling sad?<lb />I was always asked what's the big deal or<lb />told to get over it," said Mr. Hewitt, who<lb />is currently being treated for bipolar.<lb />Hewitt, in his mid 30s, attempted suicide<lb />three or four times before he was<lb />diagnosed a year ago.<lb /><lb /> ? "I used to eal in sick: from work<lb />three or four days out the week to sta<lb />in the bed in a dark room where I felt<lb /><lb />.<lb /><lb />&amp;<lb /><lb />Blacks were in combat units, the<lb />Pentagon responded. The vast<lb />majority was assigned to non-combat<lb />jobs that would limit the likelihood<lb />of them being killed or wounded in<lb />battle.<lb /><lb /> sate,"" Hewitt said.<lb /><lb />According to the National Mental<lb />Health Association, bipolar disorder<lb />often starts in teen years, but can emerge<lb />even later in life. It is a potentially life<lb />threatening illness that a person cannot<lb />handle alone. An alarming one in five<lb />people with bipolar disorder commits<lb />suicide.<lb /> This illness can be tigger by what<lb />we Call a "kindling" affect. Once there is<lb />vulnerability to the illness, any stress such<lb />as marnage, divorce, death of a child,<lb />loss of a job, etc, kindles this disruption<lb />in the electnical flow [of the brain] that<lb />then " manifests. itself as a bipolar<lb />illness," Kurth said.<lb /><lb />izing Symptoms of<lb />Bipolar Disorder?<lb /><lb />Symptoms include " dramatic<lb />mood swings from overly "high" and/or<lb />initable. to sad and hopeless and then<lb />back again over a period, Often there are<lb />periods of normal mood in between.<lb />Severe changes in enetpy and T behavior<lb />Pa ces changes in mood. The<lb />periods of highs and lows are called<lb />episodes of mania and depression.<lb /><lb />Signs and symptoms of mania<lb /><lb />(or manic episode):<lb /><lb />-Excessive energy, restlessness, racing<lb />thoughts and rapid talk. <lb /><lb />-Denial that anything is wrong<lb /><lb />-Extremely happy feelings<lb /><lb />-Easily irritated<lb /><lb />-Needing little sleep (2-4<lb /><lb />hours per night)<lb />-Unrealistic beer in one's ability<lb />-Poor Judgment<lb /><lb />t)<lb /><lb /> with Senator Dole. <p>nn a<lb /><lb />What Brown did not bring to education<lb /><lb />by Clarence Page<lb /><lb />WASHINGTON " America's public<lb />schools, as you may have noticed,<lb />remain largely divided by race in spite<lb /> oOf the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark<lb />Brown vs. Board of Education<lb />decision. As the 50th anniversary of<lb />that decision approaches on May 17, it<lb />is fashionable for some civil. nghts<lb />reformers to declare that Brown has<lb />Not lived up to its promise.<lb />, _» But look at the story behind the<lb />numbers and you might notice<lb />something more complex and<lb />perplexing: Racial segreganon persists<lb />in public schools not so much in spite<lb />of Brown as because of it.<lb /><lb />Today's segregation is very<lb />different from that of the early 1950s.<lb />The old segregation was a consequence<lb />of racist white imposed laws, which the<lb />high court outlawed. The new<lb /><lb />segregation ts a consequence of family<lb />finances and choices or, for the<lb />poorest families, their lack of choices.<lb /><lb />The Supreme Court on May 17,<lb />1954, overturned the high «court's<lb />1896 ruling in Plessy vs. Ferguson<lb />that "separate but equal" facilities for<lb />the races = was __ constitutional.<lb />Henceforth, the court ruled in Brown<lb /><lb />"separate educational facilities are"<lb /><lb />inherently unequal."<lb /><lb />Brown was aimed at removing<lb />the barriers that Jim Crow segregation<lb />laws had put in the way of students<lb />hke Linda Brown of Topeka, Kan.,<lb />from whose family the _ historic<lb />decision gets its name. Because she<lb />was Black, she had to walk past all<lb />white schools every day in order to<lb />attend the all Black school to which<lb />Kansas law restricted her.<lb /><lb />By the late 1960s, school<lb />desegregation became an end in itself,<lb /><lb />even for kids who lived close to their<lb />schools. Many Black students were<lb />bussed out of their home districts to<lb />white districts, although not very<lb />many white students were bussed the<lb />other way. °<lb /><lb />School bussing, urban riots and<lb />new housing ant-discrimination laws<lb />sparked, white flight from urban<lb />centers in the late 1960s and early<lb />1970s. The flight amounted to one of<lb />the largest peacetime migrations of<lb />any population in human history.<lb />Integration, as the late community<lb />activist Saul D. Alinsky put it, became<lb />the bnef period of tme between<lb />when the first Black family moved<lb />into a neighborhood and the last<lb />white family moved out.<lb /><lb />Racial integration in schools and<lb />neighborhoods has sipped backward<lb />since the 1960s, according to the Civil<lb />Rights Project at Harvard University.<lb /><lb />Project director Gary Ortield<lb />Says its recent report, "Brown at 50:<lb />Kings Dream or. Plessy's<lb />Nightmare?"; finds that public<lb />schools are becoming so segregated<lb />that "we are back to [where we were]<lb />When [Martin Luther] King was<lb />assassinated."<lb /><lb />Yet there ts a further paradox<lb />that gets far too little attention in<lb />discussions that portray integration in<lb />simple terms of Black and white. As<lb />more Blacks have msen into the<lb />middle and upper income brackets,<lb />partly as a result of the reforms that<lb />the Brown decision helped put into<lb />motion, white flight has been<lb />tollowed by Black middleclass flight<lb />into better off neighborhoods and<lb />away from worse off Black folks.<lb /><lb />That's the American dream as<lb />many folks see it, but it also has left<lb />many Black low-income _ families<lb /><lb />Celebrities urge Senate to move on bill against<lb /><lb />Forced Psychiatric Child Drugging |,<lb /><lb />LOS ANGELES - Chaka Khan, Juliette f<lb /><lb />Lewis, Danny Masterson (That 70s<lb />Show) and Sofia Milos (CSI Miami), in<lb /> osupport of legislation to stop the<lb /> psychiatric drugping of children, honored<lb />individuals who have fought for federal<lb />legislation to stop school personnel from<lb />coercing parents to give psychiatric drugs<lb />.. to their children. 8-time Grammy Award<lb />~~ winner, humanitarian and community<lb /> activist, Chaska Kahn was a featured<lb /> o human and civil rights _ activists,<lb /> " government officials and celebrities at the<lb /><lb /> 35th anniversary and awards banquet of .<lb /><lb /> othe Citizens Commission on Human<lb />Rights International (CCHR) where the<lb />', awards were presented.<lb />-| The urgency for enacting federal<lb /> oProtections for parents is fueled by a<lb />"recent Food and Drug Administration<lb />- (FDA) hearing, where panel members<lb /> ospent hours listening to emotional<lb /> T testimonies from dozens of parents after<lb /><lb />wn<lb />The<lb /><lb />~<lb /><lb />ue<lb /><lb />, GREENVILLE, NC - Joseph<lb />, Washington Gay, son of George<lb />Washington and Amanda King Gay,<lb />was born December 15, 1899. The rigid segregation of<lb />politics and music kept Motown's<lb />enormous popularity intact. But the<lb />rise of a new black political<lb />consciousness, the flames of urban<lb />riots and rebellions, the war in<lb />Vietnam, the expansion of American<lb />protest. music, the relentless<lb />appropriation of black music by<lb />white artists, the evolution of student<lb />activism, and the resurgence of<lb />Progressive politics began to shape<lb />the music of some of black America's<lb />bravest artists. Many black jazz artists<lb />had already been politicized in. the<lb />fifties and sixties, and the recordings<lb />of Sun Ra, John Coltrane, and<lb />members of the Association for the<lb />Advancement of Creative Musicians<lb />(AACM) showed how the line<lb />between music and social conscience<lb />could be artfully blurred.<lb /><lb />The work of Nina<lb />("Mississippi Goddamn"),<lb />McCann and Eddie ~ " Harris<lb />("Compared to What"), Julian<lb />"Cannonball" Adderley ("The Price<lb />You Got to Pay to Be Free") and<lb />Eugene McDaniel (Headless Heroes<lb />of the Apocalypse) proved that the<lb />black aesthetic and the black politic<lb />could be one.<lb /><lb />Curtis Mayfield defined the<lb />gospel-drenched Chicago sound with<lb />music of haunting eloquence and<lb />lyrics that touched the soul of black<lb />struggle. His work with the<lb />Impressions produced not only<lb />elegant romantic ballads, but edifying<lb />songs of racial pride. In the<lb />mid-sixties, Mayfied wrote socially<lb />uplifting tunes such as "Keep on<lb />Pushing, ? and "People Get Ready. ?<lb />While not explicitly political anthems,<lb />these songs nevertheless brought<lb />inspiration to the civil rights<lb /><lb />Simone<lb />Les<lb /><lb />DON'T FORGET |<lb /><lb />M-Voice N ewspaper 5<lb /><lb />movement. In 1968, Mayfield more<lb />straightforwardly embraced _ black<lb />pride on his stirring "We're a Winner,"<lb />followed in the next couple of years by<lb />such message songs as oThis Is My<lb />Country" and "Choice of Colors. ? In<lb />1969, Sly and the Family Stone's<lb />album Stand! ventured into socially<lb />conscious. territory with songs like<lb />"Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey" and<lb />"Everyday People." In the<lb />seventies, they added the masterly and<lb />stylishly bleak manifesto There's a Riot<lb />Goin T On.<lb /><lb />Motown slowly came around.<lb />Stevie Wonder was the first Motown<lb />artist to nod to politics on a single<lb />when in 1966 he released a well<lb />received version of Bob Dylan's<lb /> oBlowin' in the Wind." He followed it<lb />later that year with the similarly<lb /><lb />themed "A Place in the Sun" on his.<lb /><lb />album Down to Earth, which was the<lb />first Motown album cover to depict a<lb />ghetto landscape.<lb /><lb />Despite these recordings, the songs<lb />failed to ignite a trend of socially<lb />conscious music at Motown. In 1968,<lb />the tide turned with the release of the<lb />Supremes T "Love Child," a song that<lb />probes the plight of unwed teen<lb />mothers. "Love Child" leaped to the<lb />number one position on the pop<lb />charts and became the biggest hit of<lb />the Supremes T career. If these are our values,<lb />we are in trouble and regardless of<lb />how they are described, they are<lb />superficial, short-lived and<lb />misleading. Our net worth is not equal<lb />to the sum total of our appearances,<lb />our abilities and our affluence.<lb /><lb />It's a lousy lie that convinces us<lb />to feel bad about ourselves because<lb />we don't compare well with others<lb />when it comes beauty, brains, bucks<lb />or brawn. It's a lie of unbelievable<lb />Proportions that cause us to think<lb />that real value is found in a<lb />handsome face, a well-dressed body,<lb />a quick mind or a fat bank account.<lb /><lb />Yet the children of the world<lb />are nurtured or neglected, pampered<lb />or put off, largely on the basis of<lb />bone structure and fat deposits of<lb />their bodies, the alertness of their<lb />minds, or the social status of their<lb />parents. Children are raised to feel<lb />good or bad about themselves<lb /><lb />The Values By<lb />Which We See Ourselves<lb />Our natural inclination is to think that<lb />our well-being and ability to feel good<lb />about ourselves lies in values variously<lb /><lb />described as: Beauty, Bucks,<lb /><lb />depending on how they fit into the<lb />selfish, ever-changing mold of the<lb />world around them. Does<lb />this mean we should always despise<lb />these other values? No, they have<lb />their place. We need to cultivate and<lb />appreciate wealth, appearance, ability<lb />and influence whenever higher values<lb />show us that it is appropriate to do so,<lb />We need to do the best we can with.<lb />what the Lord has given us. Being a<lb />well-groomed color-coordinated<lb />person has its place. And in a limited<lb />sense, this can help us feel better<lb />about ourselves.<lb /><lb />But when it comes to the real basis of<lb />self-esteem, we need to build on the<lb />truth of what the Lord said to the<lb />prophet Samuel while showing him<lb />the next king of Israel. Of one hot<lb />prospect ? the Lord said: "Do not look<lb />at his appearance or at the height of<lb />his stature, because | have refused<lb />him. <lb />8 M-Voice Newspaper April 2004<lb /><lb />By Carolyn M. Brown.<lb /><lb />For years, Black car buyers have<lb /><lb />alleged that we pay more for auto loans<lb />than similarly situated white buyers. And<lb />after years of these claims being<lb />dismissed, more. than half a dozen class<lb />acton suits have been filed against<lb />several automobile finance companies<lb />for these same accusations " Black car<lb />buyers are finally getting their day in<lb />court. baa<lb /><lb />General Motors Acceptance Corp.<lb />the nation Ts second largest auto lender,<lb />recently agreed t a six-year-old<lb />class-action lawsuit that Seay the<lb />company of allowing dealers to<lb />improperly raise interest rates for<lb /><lb />Afncan American and Hispanic car ,<lb /><lb />buyers. GM is the second automaker to<lb />settle a class-action lawsuit<lb /><lb />discriminatory lending practices. Nissan<lb /><lb />agreed to change its lending practices in<lb />a settlement reached last year. TThe<lb />National Consumer Law Center has<lb />sumilar lawsuits pending against dealer<lb />finance cotnpanies including Ford<lb />Motor Credit, Toyota Motor Credit,<lb />Chrysler Financial and a Honda<lb />Financial, . a<lb /><lb />alleging .<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />Finance markup . charges follow<lb />industry wide practice that impacts one<lb />in four buyers ~f new and used cars,<lb />according to the Consumer<lb />Federaton of America. GMAC and<lb />Ford Credit Motor Corp., the top two<lb />auto lenders, account for 44 % of US<lb />auto lending. And they charge their<lb />cavomers hundreds of milkons of<lb /><lb />$ annually in markup charges.<lb /><lb />Here's how hidden aie work.<lb />Let's say you purchase a car and<lb />arrange financing through the dealer.<lb />Based on credit histor an income<lb />you may qualify for a rate of 8.5%, but<lb />the dealer may tell you the loan win<lb />cost 11.5% interest a year. So, if you<lb />Wvere to receive a $26463 auto loan<lb />with a 72- month term at an 8.5% buy<lb /><lb />te and an 11.5% loan rate, the total<lb /><lb />cost to you would be $36,339.45. The<lb />kickback to the dealer from the<lb />markup is $2,849.67.<lb /><lb />You are led to believe that you are<lb />receiving a orate based on your<lb />creditworthiness. But instead you pay a<lb />markup rate on your auto loan<lb />determined arbitrarily by the dealer and<lb />encouraged by the lender. Markups allow dealers to be<lb />compensated for arranging car loans.<lb /><lb />Dealer mark-ups are legal but have<lb />come under increased scrutiny from<lb />consumer advocates, who say the<lb />subjective rate increases are used<lb />disproportionately against Afnican<lb />Amencan car buyers, Hispanics, and<lb />people with limited education and<lb />those with bad credit.<lb /><lb />For imstance, researchers found<lb />from January 1999 through April 2003,<lb />Afncan Amencans accounted for 8.5%<lb />of GMAC Ts customer base but paid<lb />19.99% of auto loan markups, or<lb />$83.9 million. On average, Black<lb />consumers were paying $412 more per<lb />car loan.<lb /><lb />Roughly 30.9% of white FMCC<lb />customers received markups,<lb /><lb />loans.<lb /><lb />compared to 485% of African<lb />Amencans; Black buyers paid more<lb />than twice what whites did; $684<lb />versus $337, a difference of about<lb />$347. In the worst exafhples of the<lb /><lb /> markup, research shows some blyers -<lb />were paying more than $5,000 over the<lb /><lb />life of the loan. White the industry<lb />average is 3%, some dealers bump up<lb />interest rates as much as eight to ten<lb />points above the approved rate.<lb /><lb />_ One of the best things about the<lb />GMAC class-action settlement is that it<lb />is likely to bring about industry-wide<lb />reform in auto finance markup<lb />charges. Other dealers and lenders may<lb />be forced to disclose more about how<lb />dealerships nationwide handle ¢ar<lb /> oThe , GMAC agreement<lb /><lb />represents great progress in towering<lb /><lb />the cost and improving the fairness of<lb /><lb />dealer-arranged auto loans," says<lb />Stephen Brobeck, executive director of<lb />the Consumer Federation of America.<lb />Others agreed. |<lb /><lb />te of the settlement, a.GM<lb />imposed a 2.5% markup cap on loans<lb />up to 60 months and a 2% markup on<lb /><lb />cap for-- extended terms. , The<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />suport *<lb /><lb />© Turntable<lb /><lb />° Convenience cooking controls sy<lb /><lb />® Autog Tine Bene wy bust<lb />* Auto / Time Defrost . ofie OF QA0) |*<lb />* Full View Cooktop Lighting J vat uu J<lb /><lb />* 1/3 Horsepower Motor e09"<lb /><lb />* Position Wa!<lb /><lb />CJ * Heavy Duty Transmission<lb />te ) * Normal/Fast (SPM/ RPM +74 (626)<lb />: |. Order a copy of your credit<lb />report and correct any errors a few<lb />months before shopping for a car.<lb /><lb />_ 2. Shop around for auto financing.<lb />You have a say in the matter.<lb />3, After selecting a model, call your<lb /><lb />-bank or. credit umon before seeking<lb /><lb />auto financing from a car dealer, and<lb />compare it to the dealers quote.<lb />Bankrate.com lists national averages<lb />for car loans as well as rates available in<lb />local markets nationwide.<lb /><lb />4. Check out alternatives, such as<lb />online loans. PeopleFitst.com and<lb />E-Loan are among the lenders offering<lb />loans online.<lb /><lb />5. Consider arnving at the<lb />dealership with approved financing in<lb />hand. This way you will have more<lb />negotiation power when the dealer<lb />quotes you a markup interest rate.<lb /><lb />6. Review closely incentives such as<lb /><lb />7<lb /><lb />the dealer offering zero percent<lb />financing. Note dealers: will not. give ~<lb />consumers a rebate on the sale price.<lb /><lb />7. Ask your bank or credit union.<lb />whether it makes sense to take the<lb />rebate and finance the purchase at the<lb />regular rate, then compare their<lb />calculations with those of the dealer.<lb /><lb />8. It's essential that you as the cat<lb />buyer, not the dealer, place the<lb />telephone call to your financial<lb />institution.<lb /><lb />The best advice is that future car<lb />buyers do their homework. If you walk<lb /><lb />people thought you<lb />were not your<lb />normal self or you<lb />were so hyper that<lb /><lb />eee<lb /><lb />Bipolar<lb />you got into trouble?<lb />..you were so imtable that you shouted at<lb />people or started fights or arguments?<lb />you felt much more self-confident thah<lb />usual? :<lb />..you got much less sleep than usual and<lb /><lb />found you didn't really miss it? ;<lb />you were much more talkative or spoke<lb />much faster than usual? ..<lb /><lb />..thoughts raced through your head ar<lb />you couldn't slow your mind down?<lb />you were so easily distracted by things |<lb />around you that you had trouble<lb />concentrating or staying on track? :<lb />..you had much more energy than usual?<lb />..you were much more active or did<lb />many more things than usual? - ,<lb />you were much more social gr<lb />outgoing than usual, for example, you<lb />telephoned fnends in the middle of the<lb />night? _ " coy<lb />~you were much more interested in sex<lb />than usual? This<lb />concern comes from my own<lb />Journey, which will be a never ending<lb />one. This story is for those who have<lb />a desire to follow this path.<lb /><lb />The concept of "A Journey<lb />from Bondage" stems from the<lb /> Many journeys taken by people such<lb />as Harriet Tubman and the African<lb /><lb />py American T Negroes and Moses and<lb /><lb />the Israelites. All of these journeys<lb /><lb />-ame about for freedom. The only<lb /><lb />difference in their bondage and the<lb />bondage of the people in this story ?<lb />is that their chains were visible and<lb />ours is a silent disease. "The Disease<lb />of Addiction", T the. cause of many<lb /><lb />| Chains of bondage. | now invite you<lb />to go on my oJourney ? from The<lb />_ Bondage of the disease of addiction.<lb /><lb />I would like to go back to the<lb />age of 13 when my dad died. That's<lb />when I took my first drink and used<lb />my firs: drug. The loss was more<lb />than I could bear. I did not know<lb />how to rid myself of the pain and<lb />the grief. .As I progressed in life so<lb />did my disease of addiction.<lb /><lb />I would like to reach back to the<lb />age of 13 when my dad died. That's<lb />when I took my first drink and used<lb />my first drug. The lost. was more<lb />then I could bear and I didn't know<lb /><lb />eae<lb /><lb />Addict<lb />Bondage<lb /><lb />how to rid myself of the pain and<lb />grief as my. life progressed, so did<lb />my disease of addiction.<lb /><lb />Five years later | had a 9 month<lb />reprieve from my addiction. I was<lb />blessed with a healthy boy. Now<lb />with the challenge of a husband and<lb />a child, brought on stress. That's<lb />when my disease once again rose it's<lb />ugly head. It became more<lb />progressive. ,<lb /><lb />Three years following that |<lb />was blessed with another reprieve of<lb />nine months and blessed with a<lb />healthy baby girl. Little did I know<lb />that my reprieves would T become<lb />shorter and fewer in the following<lb />years.<lb /><lb />Eleven years later, trying to<lb />cope with an abusive marriage, more<lb /><lb />Stress, more pain, and suddenly .<lb /><lb />facing homelessness with no job.<lb />With medical progress, I learned<lb />that there may be help for me. It<lb />was only later that I began to realize<lb />that not only was it a systematic<lb />process, it was also a stressful<lb />procedure.<lb /><lb />Having been admitted twice<lb />into the only proper institute in<lb />Greenville, I came out both times<lb />with the knowledge that there was a<lb />limited time span (through no fault<lb />of the institute but the system) of<lb />28 days which nevet allowed me to<lb />actually figure out why this disease<lb />controlled my life on a daily basis.<lb /><lb />_ You must understand that<lb />the drugs and alcohol were not the<lb />problem, they were like big<lb />bandages that covered up the<lb />problems of life. You see this is all<lb />to say that.1.) We as addicts need,<lb />to be provided the tools and the<lb />time to learn exactly what our<lb />inner problems are. 2.) With these<lb />tools and the HMO, we can learn<lb />how to deal with life on life's<lb />terms. 3.) We can learn to accent<lb /><lb />life on life's terms, as well as to<lb /><lb />accept the past and put it behind<lb />us.With these tools we can start to<lb />realize that we are worth<lb />something. We can learn to like<lb />ourselves again, gain self respect<lb />and be a part of society. I was<lb />lucky enough to acquire these tools<lb />through a program of 128 days and<lb />then go on to another program of<lb />9 weeks. Now I am able to be a<lb /><lb /> Productive part of society as well<lb /><lb />as a productive and self respected<lb />person. I can now use-my talents<lb />and education. I will always be on<lb />this journey from the bondage of<lb />this disease. There are empty<lb />houses in the area that can be used<lb />as Recovery Houses for addicts<lb />and women that are pregnant.<lb />Unbom babies need a chance at<lb />life. These homes will allow<lb />addicts to learn to be independent<lb /><lb />: .<lb />again and make them feel like they<lb />want to live. They will want to work<lb />because now they have a place to<lb />call home, something that they<lb />helped to build. The cost of fixing<lb />these houses would be cheaper than<lb />the tax that the taxpayers would<lb />have to pay for. jail cells. Jails dre<lb />not the answer.
