It is instinctively<lb />ingrained in our psyche that we<lb />are destined to have bad blood.<lb />Bad blood is what many blacks<lb />were told as a diagnosis for ill-<lb />nesses. This concept may sound<lb />misinformed, but this mentality<lb />plagues many A frican-<lb />Americans today. Growing up<lb />in the rural areas of North<lb />Carolina, | remember bein<lb />told by my great grandmother<lb />that she does not go to the doc-<lb />tor. I proceeded to ask why,<lb />Mama? She responded in a<lb />firm and confident tone "that<lb />when we (black people) go to<lb />the doctor we are in worse con-<lb />dition than before we decided<lb />to." As a girl you don't question<lb />this information, you accept it.<lb />As I began to mature and the<lb />need for healthcare became a<lb />part of life, I was unsure as to<lb />whether I was to trust the doc-<lb />tor for advice or if I should call<lb />my great-grandmother and find<lb />out what iodine mixture could<lb />cure the aches and pains.<lb />Becoming a woman was quite a<lb />task, faced with this mistrust<lb />for the health care establish-<lb />ment, I teamed this relationship<lb />between the health industry and<lb />myself, hiad to meet in some<lb />sort of information session. The<lb />end result of course, I learned<lb />that it takes time to choose.'a<lb />health care provider that you<lb />trust. Feeling comfortable to sit<lb />down in a cold, airy room that<lb />smells like alcohol and tell a<lb />nurse or physician what's<lb />wrong with you, is difficult.<lb />Nonetheless, it can be done.<lb />Imagine how many A frican-<lb />Americans feel the way I've de-<lb />scribed to you above, and right-<lb />fully so. Between 1932 and<lb />1972, the Tuskegee Syphilis<lb />: Experiment study was con-<lb />ducted. This study would devas-<lb /> tatingly affect the hearts of<lb /> black people across America.<lb /><lb />- The Tuskegee Syphilis<lb /><lb />Experiment was conducted to<lb /> odiscover the theories of syphilis<lb />on blacks as opposed to whites,<lb />Few of us understand the seri-<lb />ousness of this matter, the -ex-<lb />Periment went on for forty<lb />years. Although the experiment<lb /> ended in 1972, the lifelong im-<lb />plications from this study are<lb /> prevalent today. The men in-<lb />fected their wives with this dis-<lb />ease and onlay tee mbom<lb />babies to enter this world with<lb />this ghastly and deadly illness.<lb />is experiment has left a leg-<lb />acy of mistrust for scientists<lb />and doctors.<lb />What is syphilis? Syphilis is a<lb />sexually transmitted disease<lb />(STD) caused by a bacterium<lb />called treponema pallidum.<lb />This illness if left untreated<lb />-auses a lifetime of mental and<lb />dhysical problems or fatal in<lb />many cases. In 2002, the North<lb />Carolina HIV/STD Surveillance<lb />concluded that seventy-<lb />percent syphilis cases were<lb />reporied for African-Americans.<lb />For 2003, the numbers de-<lb />creased by a small percentage<lb />with sixty-eight percent syphilis .<lb />cases being reported. We can<lb />continue to bring these numbers<lb />down. In order to do this we<lb />must trust ourselves enough to<lb />80 to the doctor,<lb /><lb />On September 16, 2003 Tom<lb />Joyner advocated the "Take a<lb />Loved One to the Doctor<lb />Campaign" This campaign en-<lb />couraged African Americans<lb />everywhere to take friends<lb />and/or family to the doctor,<lb />Participating in ora such<lb />as this one can help us be in-<lb />formed of illnesses and the pre-<lb />ventative measures we can take<lb />to save our own life or the life<lb />of a loved one.<lb /><lb />Illiteracy is no longer a prob-<lb />lem, although an illness amidst<lb />the black community there is a<lb />cure.
