He holds a<lb />pen in his right hand and looks<lb />as if he is in deep in thought.<lb />His face is familiar to millions.<lb />Or is it??77927? <lb />No,say dozens of Rocky Mount<lb />residents who complain that the<lb />_ larger- than-life-size sculpture<lb />by Illinois artist Erik Blome<lb />not resemble King. "it<lb />doesn't look like him," said<lb />Betty Fentress of Rocky Mount<lb />after taking a close look one<lb /><lb />afternoon last week. "it would be :<lb /><lb />nice if it resembled him a little<lb />more."<lb /><lb />Critics vant someone to do<lb />cosmetic sculpting-surgery on<lb />the face.<lb /><lb />Some want to scrap the statue<lb />entirely. Others want to send it<lb />back to Blome.<lb /><lb />The strong negative reaction to<lb /><lb />the public art prompted the city<lb />council to postpone plans for a:<lb />dedication ceremony for the<lb />park. And the debate has swirled<lb />into a coniroversy that has<lb />stunned Blome, a well-known<lb />sculptor educated at Boston<lb />University and at the Royal<lb />College of Arts in London.<lb />Blome's boon solid: He nas<lb />uced praised sculptures o:<lb />mous Americans, including<lb />historic black figures such as<lb />Rosa Parks, George Washington<lb />Carver, Thurgood Marshall and<lb />Duke Ellington .<lb />In 1998, he also sculpted a<lb />9.5-foot bronze statue of King<lb />for Milwaukee. That statue<lb />shows King with his right hand<lb />outstretched, his face brimming<lb />with the emotion he showed<lb />during his famous :<lb />The sculpture [in Rocky Mount]<lb />looks like him, if you look at it<lb />with an observant, objective<lb />eye," Blome said. "This is one<lb /><lb />son's personal expression of<lb />Dr. Marft 1 Luther King Jr. It<lb />doesn't matter who 1, and where<lb />1, am from ang what class |<lb />come from. None of that matters<lb />because Martin Luther King<lb />means something to everyone.<lb />Just because it doesn't look like<lb />the vision in someone's head<lb />doesn't mean it is not a true<lb />expression."<lb /><lb />A special connection<lb /><lb />The statue is the centerpiece of a<lb />28.5-acre park on the north side<lb />of town that includes a play-<lb /><lb />gone, picnic pape<lb />mches, Planning for a to<lb />honor King began in the early<lb />Rocky Mount claims a special<lb />connection to T King because he<lb />gave an early version of his "I<lb />Have a Dream" speech at a local<lb />high school in November 1962,<lb /><lb />months before a Washington <lb /><lb />oration made the words famous,<lb />The city's human relations de-<lb />partment has a recording of the<lb />speech that is played on special<lb />Occasions.<lb /><lb />- Although the Rocky Mount<lb /><lb />memorial makes no reference to<lb />King's appearan ' w ve in the city, it<lb />Prominently displays excerpts<lb />from the speech in which King<lb /><lb />- @loquently characterized _ his<lb /><lb />n for racial harmony.<lb /><lb />Three stones are inscribed with<lb /><lb />a prophetic e from King's<lb /><lb />in Memphis, Tenn., on<lb />a 3, 1968, the last one of his<lb />ife. o7<lb /><lb />" T've looked over, and I've seen<lb />the promised land. I'm not<lb />fearing any man."<lb /><lb />He was killed by an assassin the<lb />next day.<lb /><lb />Clayborne Carson, director of<lb /><lb />the Martin Luther King Papers<lb /><lb />Project: at Stanford University,<lb />said the Rocky Mount gathering<lb />was one of the earliest presenta-<lb /><lb />tions of the "Dream"<lb /><lb />which King T repeated in several<lb />Places before Washington. It is<lb />significant, he said, because the<lb />is considered one of the<lb /><lb />eatest of the century,<lb /><lb />ing Ts image is also among the<lb />most recognizable, said Carson,<lb />and that makes an artists task<lb />difficuft. He recalled similar<lb />concerns about a likeness of<lb />King when a statue was unveiled<lb />in pashington. "There was kind<lb />of a gasp because people didn't<lb />like it," Carson said.<lb /><lb />Open discussion<lb /><lb />Rocky Mount Mayor Fred<lb />Turnage, who has served for 30<lb />years, says he is perplexed by the<lb />uproar over the statue because<lb />he sees the park as a maior<lb />accomplishment in race iz<lb />tions for this city of 58,000. -<lb />The city already paid the artist<lb />$55,800 for the work, which was<lb />installed last month. So the<lb />mayor has appointed a commit-<lb />tee to sort out. the issue .<lb />"I frankly don't know what we<lb />can do," Turnage said. "I'm not<lb />an artist. Can you go back and<lb />do part of it? I don! know."<lb />No one objected to the statue<lb />initially, city officials said. And<lb /><lb />ome said he received only<lb />Positive comments about the<lb />work-in-progress: the city a<lb />proved his drawings of the<lb />Statue, and several Rocky Mount<lb />residents praiseda small mode<lb />of the statue that Blome pre-<lb />sented at a community event.<lb /><lb />"It was always open for com-<lb />ment, all along, T Blome said.<lb /> oThe people who are so vocal<lb />now and Say it should be taken<lb />had every opportunity to<lb />take part in the process, and they<lb />did not. It's a cheap shot. ?<lb />Statue supporters say the figure<lb />ould be considered as an<lb />artists conception, not a photo-<lb />ic Appbarairtey and that<lb />it properly honors King's spirit.<lb />But it won't do for hee for<lb />whom King Ts image is as clear<lb />as his orations.<lb />Rocky Mount resident Henry V.<lb />Davis said the whole memorial,<lb />including the statue, should<lb />Clearly invoke King's image.<lb />Davis said he didn't like the pose<lb />because it looks like the person<lb />was arrogant. .<lb />Lillie Solide , a spokeswoman<lb /><lb />for a community group called |<lb /><lb />Voices for Effective Change,<lb />said it's important that the statue<lb />look like King so that children<lb />who visit the park will know<lb />how he looked. "Nobody can<lb />identify that statue, ? she said.<lb /> oin order to honor him, it should<lb />look like him." .-<lb /><lb />Fentress, who was relaxing at<lb />the park Wednesday afternoon,<lb />said she thought the statue was<lb />nice enough, "they just need to<lb />redo his face."<lb /><lb />"His face is round and flat," she<lb />said, referring to the image on<lb />the hill. "Dr. King's face is kind<lb />of an oval shape."<lb /><lb />AUGUST 2003<lb /><lb />sounded off in letters and calls<lb />to the editor of The Rocky<lb />Mount Telegram, the local<lb />newspaper. A few, which the<lb />mayor describes as extremists,<lb />have complained that they don't<lb />feel there. should be a statue at<lb />all. -<lb />Turnage said he hoped the<lb />outcome will eventually bring<lb />together in the spirit o<lb />the man who preached harmony.<lb />"My goal is that we don't take<lb />something that has been so<lb />meaningful," he said, "and turn<lb />it into something divisive."<lb /><lb />Critics T and defenders have<lb /><lb />anienamimemees<lb /><lb /> o .
