<lb />Black America: The Consumer Nation<lb /><lb />poe power through spending<lb />its .<lb />CHICAGO (FinalCall.com)--If<lb />Black America were an inde-<lb />pendent country, its wealth would<lb />rank it as the ilth richest in the<lb />world, according to a consumer ?<lb />research document that analyzes<lb />Black spending power annually,<lb />But, that spending power is be-<lb />ing squandered, observers note,<lb />relegating Black America to eco-<lb />nomic slavery, instead of finan-<lb />cial freedom.<lb /><lb />"The Buying Power of Black<lb />America" recently was released<lb />by Target Market News Inc.<lb />(TMN), a Chicago-based market-<lb />ing research group. The analysis<lb />of Black spending power last<lb />year showed that some $631 bil-<lb />lion flowed through Black hands.<lb />By comparison, the United States<lb />~ ° ranked first in Gross National<lb /><lb />» = Income (GNI), at $9.6 trillion in<lb /> o . But asking us to<lb />go out of our way to do some-<lb />thing that nobody has to do be-<lb />cause of a circumstance we didn't<lb />create or perpetuate, I think, is<lb /><lb />unrealistic, ? he continued.<lb /><lb />Mr.. Smikle refutes the idea that<lb />the circulation of money in a<lb />corfimunity can be documented.<lb />And he argues that economic in-<lb />dependence can be arrived at, if<lb />Black Americans reach out to<lb />build trade relationships with the<lb />international market.<lb /><lb />"We don't want'to become an iso-<lb />lated community that only circu-<lb />lates its dollars amongst itself.<lb />We're part ofthe world and we<lb />have to spend our.money with<lb />the world," he said.<lb /><lb />But others argue that a focus on<lb />circulating more money within<lb /><lb /> the Black community is key to<lb /><lb />economic empowerment, and that<lb />spending power does not neces-<lb />sarily equate to economic<lb />strength, =<lb /><lb /> oThere is no such thing as con-<lb />sumer power; its an oxymoronic<lb />term," claims Dr. Claude<lb />Anderson, author of the book,<lb />"Powernomics." Nearly<lb />all of Black income is spent di-<lb />rectly outside of Black hands, be-<lb />cause Blacks do not practice<lb />group economics "pooling of<lb />money, focusing it into one geo-<lb />graphical area and purchasing in<lb />a bloc, he added.<lb /><lb />A perfect example of group eco-<lb />nomics, according to Dr.<lb /><lb />Anderson, was accomplished in<lb /><lb />the Greenwood District of Tulsa,<lb />Okla., in the early 1900s "a time |<lb /><lb />~ when legal segregation forced<lb /><lb />Blacks to do business among<lb /><lb />Commonly fe<lb /><lb /> oarea betame @ nationally reco<lb /><lb />nized entrepreneurial center, as<lb />dollars circulated 36 to 1,000<lb />times within the Black commu-<lb />nity, according to authors Jay<lb />Wilson and Ron Wallace in their<lb /><lb />book on the subject. rr<lb />Among over 600 successful busi-<lb />nesses were 21: churches, 21 res-<lb />taurants, 30 grocery stores and<lb />two movie theaters, plus a hospi-<lb /><lb />tal, a bank, a post office; librar-<lb />ies, schools, law offices, a half.<lb />dozen private airplanes, and even<lb />a bus system. He<lb /><lb />_ Claims that in the past 25. years,<lb /><lb />other ethnic groups have in-<lb />creased their disposable income<lb />and out-produced Blacks in<lb />wealth because they practice<lb />group economics, resulting in the<lb />creation of more businesses.<lb />"One out of every: 10 Asians is in<lb />business; one out of 35. There has never<lb />been in the history of the world a<lb /><lb /> people who were free and inde-<lb /><lb />pendent with no land. Lead plaintiff attorney,<lb /><lb />- Lionell Jean Baptistealong with hundreds of anxious supporters, were astounded as Judge Charles Norgie _<lb /><lb />ied several motions filed on behalf of the plaintiffs in Court. "<lb />"Ou one is that the court has aligned itself directly and openly with the defense," said Baptiste. "Hi<lb />has denied our motion for eee ua of documents and we have introduced that motion from the very<lb />inning of this lawsuit," he said.<lb /><lb />in he made a motion to prohibit the defense from shredding evidence of destroying documents,<lb /><lb />in order to preserve the archives. oThese documents are crucial because they contain information about our<lb /><lb />forefathers and foremothers, who they were and who they were sold to," he explained.<lb /><lb />The first consolidated class action lawsuit was filed in February 2003 asking reparations on behalf of 35<lb /><lb />million descendants of slaves. Plaintiffs in six states-New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Louisiana<lb /><lb />and Texas - filed against 17 corporations that allegedly profited from slavery and the transatlantic slave<lb /><lb />trade. The cases have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, and Eastern<lb /><lb />Division.<lb /><lb />nt corporations include Aetna Casualty, Fleet Boston, Lloyds of London, J.P. "in an era with what happened with Enron, an era where when the Holocaust<lb /><lb />cases were brought and Swiss banks were told not to destroy documents, it is inconceivable that the judge<lb /><lb />can then say, well normal rules can govern and Tpke your interest.'The first time We were in court we<lb /><lb />raised this is- sue and it was fully briefed," said Warham: "Then we pushed for a decision in May because<lb /><lb />we were concerned that documents would disappear. The meeting was a<lb />follow-up to request made to<lb />the U.S. Department of Justice<lb />to investigate the Boseman<lb />death. According to Henderson,<lb /><lb /> oNs the Federal Bureau of<lb /><lb />Investigating is now conducting<lb />an investigation into the<lb />Boseman death. "The FBI will<lb />determine whether the State<lb />Bureau of Investigation report<lb />exonerating the seven<lb /><lb />mncers is ei-<lb />says Henderson. Representatives<lb />of the Boseman family say they<lb />just want justice done. They<lb />don't want to see this type of .<lb />thing happen again to other<lb />people in Greenville and the of.<lb />ficers should be punished for<lb />what they did.<lb /><lb />Experts say that "compression<lb />of the trunk limits chest move-<lb />ment and may splint the dia-<lb />phragm preventing the<lb />diaphragm from moving up and<lb /><lb />abdomen. These diaphragmatic<lb />movements are essential to the<lb />breathing process, We know<lb />that people who have their<lb />chest squeezed die because they<lb />are unable to breath ade-<lb />quately." According to the<lb />Autopsy R Mr. Boseman<lb />was about five foot eight inches<lb />tall (5' 8") weighing 286<lb />pounds. The medical examiner<lb />deseri<lb />obese. "When seven profes-<lb />sional police officers compress<lb />a man of Boseman's size and<lb />weight into the ground for over<lb />four minutes it is foreseeable<lb />that death is the likely result,"<lb /><lb /> osays Henderson, According<lb />itt<lb /><lb />M.G.F. We be-<lb />lieve the medical examiner<lb />ruled the death was caused by<lb />Agitated Delirium ? because all<lb />the facts surroundin<lb /><lb />an Ts death were not<lb />available to the medical exam-<lb />iner, ? say Henderson.<lb /><lb />Henderson Says, the words<lb />Agitated Delirium ? did not<lb /><lb />~ make the cause of death clear<lb /><lb />to us in the community so our<lb />people consulted the literature<lb />and spoke with other medical<lb />examiners. We learned that<lb />Agitated Delirium ? was at best<lb />the most plausible explanation<lb />of Mr. Boseman Ts death when<lb />other evidence is not consid-<lb />ered. We learned that in an<lb />Acute Behavioral Disturbance ?<lb />situation like this that two other<lb />explanations are equally plausi-<lb />ble. These are Restrain<lb />Asphyxia ? and ,,Positional<lb />Asphyxia. ? We learned that<lb />where Mr. an was at the<lb />actual time he stopped breath-<lb />ing was even more important<lb />than the fact that illegal drugs<lb />were detected in his system.<lb />We understand that there is no<lb />clear and conclusive medical<lb />evidence that has determined<lb />the cause of death. Therefore,<lb />if all the facts are considered<lb />the cause of death ruling is sub-<lb />ject to change.<lb /><lb />According to the official re-<lb /><lb />ribs. The Medical Examiner -<lb />said there is at least one de- *<lb /><lb />re of Mr. Boseman being<lb /><lb />views,while in the grassy area,<lb />an was lying on his<lb />stomach and the police officers<lb />could not get his hands behind<lb />his back in order to handcuff<lb />him. ? According<lb />to Henderson, a major question<lb />for a grand jury is whether any<lb />of the Greenville Police Officers<lb />formed a malicious intent to<lb />kill Mr. Boseman after th<lb />learned of his HIV infection, or<lb /><lb />ether they acted with reck- -<lb />less disregard. ?<lb /><lb />According to the Autop<lb />Report, the police stated that<lb />one police officer struck<lb />Boseman in the head with his<lb />fist when Boseman hit him.<lb />The medical examiner, how-<lb />ever, indicated that Boseman<lb />has been struck in the head<lb />with a flashlight or ASP Baton<lb />several times. Project 2] members encourage NASCAR to con-<lb />tinue its outreach to minorities, but consider Jackson's past re-<lb />lationship more hurtful than helpful.<lb />On July 29, USA Today neve f that a NASCAR insider con-<lb />firms the organization has not and will not make a financial<lb />donation to Jackson groups in 2003. |<lb />"This is a major win," said Project 21 member Horace Cooper,<lb /> oSupporters of NASCAR and advocates for good government<lb />alike can cheer this decision. No longer will an outstanding<lb />sports league support an individual whose moral failings make "<lb />him unfit to promote progress on race relations and personal<lb />respon eth in our urban open by th National Legal and<lb />a) Joined a campaign e Nati an<lb />Policy Ceniter to urge NASCAR to end its financial relation-<lb />ship with Jackson. NASCAR gave Jackson's groups "<lb />over $250,000 in recent years. During that time, NASCAR in-<lb />troduced internal diversity programs and minority out-<lb />reach efforts. These efforts were effectively dismissed in late<lb />June, when Rainbow/PUSH board member Bill Shack called<lb />auto racing "the !ast bastion of white supremacy ? in profes-<lb />sional sports and Rainbow Sports director Charles Ferrell<lb />called NASCAR "a good ole T boy's Southern cracker sport" in<lb />i. uly.<lb />i. Jackson claimed credit for helping black driver Morty Buckles<lb />in a single race in 2001 and is reportedly helping put together<lb />a black motorcycle racing team. However, Project 21 was con-<lb />tacted by a high-profile black driver who said he had never<lb />been contacted by Jackson or his associates and by black team<lb />owners who believe Jackson's intrusion in the sport is having a<lb />negative impact on getting black drivers on the track. In inter-<lb />views, Project 21 members and staff pointed out that minorit<lb />outreach is a benefit to NASCAR. Furthermore, Jackson - with<lb />iS business ties - can do more to find the sport's "Tiger<lb />Woods" by helping drivers find financial sponsors rather than _-<lb />dictating policy to racing officials. Finding sponsors would ba<lb />show Jackson's true interest in diversifying the sport, and<lb />would not require a cash donation from NASCAR (which<lb />doesn't fund teams or individual drivers).<lb />Project 21 member Reginald Jones added: "I'm happy to hear<lb />that NASCAR is progressing in separating itself from Jesse<lb />: Jackson. They are moving away from political correctness by<lb />moving away from Jackson."<lb /><lb />Project 21 has been a leading voice of the African-American commu-<lb />nity since 1992.
