Now, the Justice<lb />ment field offices in the<lb />South often functioned in col-<lb />lusion with the racist county<lb />sheriffs who ran the convict-<lb />lease system. They can<lb />be Black, White or otherwise,<lb />but they are considered osafe <lb />by those who really run the<lb /><lb />show.<lb /><lb />The two factions get togeth-<lb />er and make the plans, which<lb />more often than not result in<lb />new (and sometimes old) pro-<lb />grams for the rabble-rousing,<lb />dissatisfied, angry Black folks.<lb />But those who make the plans<lb />are the ones who get real eco-<lb />nomic progress. They get the<lb />high-level positions; they get<lb />the consultant contracts; they<lb />get access to the funds allocat-<lb />ed to set up the programs; they<lb />get development rights to build<lb />mor housing,<lb /><lb />cy get progress; we get<lb />programs.<lb /><lb />And check this out. Even<lb />when we get our programs,<lb />such as affirmative action, set-<lb />asides and the like, othey <lb />develop ways to get in on that<lb />action as well. For instance,<lb /><lb />ed White women more than<lb />any other group. Hey, wasn Tt<lb />that oprogram developed in<lb />response to past injustices<lb />against Black people?<lb /><lb />Changing the names of<lb />those programs to owomen<lb />business enterprise, ominority<lb />business enterprise and<lb /> osmall business enterprise <lb />programs soon compromised<lb />some of the set-aside pro-<lb />grams, again originally desig-<lb />nated for Black folks,<lb /><lb />The result? Black business.<lb /><lb />es, for which the programs are<lb />written, get lost in massive<lb /> ocertification paperwork - can<lb />you imagine having to ocerti-<lb />fy your Blackness in order to<lb />gel a portion of the meager<lb />percentages set aside for all of<lb />these groups? - and end.up, if<lb />they are lucky, getting the<lb /><lb />We have been programmed<lb />mesmerized by programs,<lb />put to sleep by programs,<lb /><lb />of the 70 percent and even<lb />some @f the 30 percent. They<lb />get ord press we get programs.<lb />We have been programmed<lb />to believe that all we need is<lb />vil program and things<lb /><lb />will be just fine. We have fall-<lb />en forithe ruse of corporate -<lb />greed shrouded in a cloak of<lb /><lb />Why do we keep buying the<lb />same old song and dance?<lb />Why do we keep allowing oth-<lb />ers to play us that way? How<lb />can we look at ourselves in the<lb />mirror and not see the sad eyes<lb />of our children who long for a<lb />better world? How can we not<lb />hear the desperate cries of our<lb /><lb />by programs, Ss<lb />hypnotized by programs,<lb />and we are being<lb /><lb />killed - literally and fit uratively - by programs that<lb /><lb />put millions into the<lb /><lb />crumbs that fall off the set-<lb />aside biscuit.<lb />To make it even Worse,<lb /><lb />, White males get the lion's<lb />affirmative action has benefit- »<lb /><lb />share of the resources, without<lb />having to certify they iire<lb />White, and because they are<lb />married to and are the fathers<lb />of White females, they get in<lb />on the WBE action as well.<lb /><lb />In my hometown, White<lb />males can now also get in on<lb />the city Ts 30 percent osmall<lb />business set-aside program<lb />because of its orace-neutral <lb />criterion and its increase in the<lb />net worth ceiling of an indi-<lb />vidual small business owner<lb />from $325,000 to $750,000.<lb />Thus, White males get the all<lb /><lb />largegs toward Black people.<lb />We hive accepted politicians<lb /><lb />_ who pretend they are working<lb /><lb />to oI@vel the playing field, all<lb />the while advancing them-<lb />selves and forgetting about<lb />thos@ upon whose shoulders<lb />they ftand. We have been pro-<lb />grammed by programs, mes-<lb />merifed by programs, hypno-<lb />tized by programs, put to sleep<lb />by pfograms, and we are being<lb />killed - literally and figurative-<lb />ly - by programs that put mil-<lb />liong into the pockets of others<lb />and Rave us dangling by a<lb />thin tring hoping there is a<lb />safety net below. That safety<lb />net? Another program, of<lb />couse.<lb /><lb />Let Your Opinions Be<lb /><lb />v0Ckets of others...<lb /><lb />ee I<lb />youth, who are asking us to<lb />stand up as Black men and<lb />women and stop this madness?<lb />How can we sleep at night<lb />when what is happening to our<lb />people is so blatant and overt<lb />that even a child can recognize<lb />it? When are we going to stop<lb />feeding on the Pablum placed<lb />before us, fighting over the<lb />portions, which were original-<lb />ly and entirely meant for<lb />Blacks, only to end up with a<lb />small percentage of the per-<lb />centage designated for<lb /> ominorities, women, and<lb /> osmall business owners?<lb /><lb />Programs would be all right<lb />if they did what they were set<lb />Up to do. But we have allowed<lb /><lb />them to deviate so far from<lb />their purpose that they have<lb />become nothing more than a<lb />joke - with Black folks being<lb />the punch line. If White<lb />women have been discriminat-<lb /><lb />- ed against, they should have a<lb /><lb />long talk with their fathers,<lb />uncles and husbands. Blacks<lb />didn Tt have anything to do<lb />with that, so why should<lb />White women share in our<lb />programs? No other minority<lb />has suffered the*horrendous<lb />treatment that Blacks have suf-<lb />fered in this country. So where<lb />did those minority programs<lb />come from? Small businesses,<lb />according to various defini-<lb />tions, can employ hundreds of<lb />Persons, have receipts in the<lb />millions and, as I said earlier,<lb />comprise owners who have a<lb />net worth - not income, but net<lb />worth - of $750,000. How can<lb />Black-owned micro-enterpris-<lb /><lb />_ 8 and sole Proprietorships<lb /><lb />compete with that, especially<lb />within the same small business<lb />program?<lb /><lb />Yes, progratns have pro-<lb />grammed us, and we had bet-<lb />ter start deprogramming our-<lb />selves, right now,<lb /><lb />James E. <lb />Pg3<lb /><lb />tionc<lb /><lb />OVERCOMING OUR<lb />PRIDE<lb /><lb />Greetings:<lb /><lb />I would like to talk to you about<lb /><lb />a spirit that is overtaking our<lb /><lb />churches today, that spirit is<lb /><lb />called pride. It is a Spirit that<lb />~ has been around for a long time<lb />but it is seldom recognized until<lb />it has done some dama e.<lb />Pride is the sin that deceives us.<lb />Its effects are found everywhere.<lb />It is the chief cause of human<lb />strife and tragedy. Pride is the<lb />original sin, committed<lb />Satan resulting in his fall from<lb />heaven, and by Adam and Eve<lb />when they were sent from the<lb />Garden. All other evil can be<lb />traced back to pride.<lb />What is this sin? Pride is an<lb />undue sense of our own superi-<lb />Ority; it is inordinate self.<lb />esteem. It is the raising of our-<lb />selves above others, As a result<lb />of pride, our relationships with<lb />God, with others and with vur-<lb />selves are severely affected.<lb />C.S.Lewis wrote, "Pride always<lb />means enmity -- it is enmity.<lb />And not only between man and<lb />man, but enmity to God..:.A<lb />proud man is always looking<lb />down on things and people:<lb />and, of course, as long as you<lb />are looking down, you cannot<lb />see something that is above<lb /><lb />you.... As long as you are .<lb />proud, you cannot know God."<lb />We are God's creation, He-<lb />_Claborately designed us and<lb />brought each of us into being.<lb />In every way God is vastly su-<lb />perior to us. He is infinite; we<lb />are finite. He is righteous; we<lb />have sinned and are unright-<lb />cous. He is wise; we are fool-<lb />ish. When we are proud, we<lb />deliberately choose not to ac-<lb />knowledge God's Lordship in<lb />our lives. Instead, we exalt our<lb />own way of doing things, and<lb />we say to God, "I'll do this my<lb /><lb />-. way. Doi't interfere in my<lb /><lb />life." But if we do not know<lb />that God is immeasurably supe-<lb />rior to ourselves, then we can-<lb />not know him at all. Pride<lb />alienates us from others. If we<lb />Judge others. If we judge oth-<lb />ers and deem them to be infe-<lb />rior to us, we become cripple in<lb />our ability to relate to them.<lb />Pride wrecks relationships, set-<lb /><lb />ting husband against wife, par-<lb /><lb />ent against child, friend against<lb />friend, worker against boss. In<lb />our pride we can become iso-<lb />lated and alone. Pride also<lb />wreaks havoc in our own lives,<lb />According to the book of<lb />Proverbs, there is more hope<lb />for the fool than for a proud<lb />person. Indeed, a proud person<lb />is the biggest fool of al? be-<lb />cause pride will bring him low,<lb />leading to his ultimate destruc-<lb />tion. The symptoms of pride<lb />can be likened to those of can-<lb />cer. At first we are unaware of<lb />the cancer, and it grows silently<lb />inside our bodies. Then we.re-<lb />alize that something isn't right.<lb />If we ignore it, the cancer be-<lb />comes a consuming and poten-<lb />tially lethal disease. So it is<lb />with pride. Once we recognize<lb />the symptoms of pride in our<lb />lives, we have two choices: we<lb />can ignore the symptoms and<lb />let pride destroy us, or we can<lb /><lb />g0 to God and ask him to show<lb />us the extent of the problem "<lb />and trust him to help us deal<lb /><lb />with is. The symptoms of pride <lb /><lb />include:<lb />Stealing from God's glory. To<lb />have an honest estimation and<lb />understanding of our God given<lb />gifts and understanding of our<lb />od-given gifts and abilities is<lb />not pride. Such an assessment<lb />is necessary if we are to de-<lb />velop the talents that God-has<lb />invested in us. However, it is a<lb />dangerous form of pride that. -<lb />Causes us to take credit for the<lb />gifts that God has given us.<lb />Self-centeredness. If, in the ex-<lb />ercising of our spiritual gifts<lb />and natural abilities, we ride<lb />over the feelings of others and:<lb />insist on getting our own way,<lb />then we need to reexamine our<lb /><lb />se<lb /><lb />ree If we are not using our »<lb />a<lb /><lb />ilities to bring blessing to<lb />others, then we are misusing<lb />them.<lb />A demanding spirit. The pride<lb />of a demanding person is re-<lb />vealed by his constantly bring-<lb />ing attention to the things that<lb />have not been done for him, -<lb />rather than the things that have<lb /><lb />n done. In demanding that<lb /><lb />people do things our way, we<lb />are saying, "I am superior to<lb />you. <lb />Superiority. Pride causes us to<lb /><lb />lieve we are more important<lb />than others and to look down<lb />on them. Such haughitiness re-<lb />veals a belief that somehow we<lb />are closer to God or better that<lb />other people because of our<lb />doctrines, actions and intrinsic<lb />worth.<lb />Sarcasm. Caustic comments<lb />may be socially acceptable, but<lb />they have no place in the<lb />Kingdom of God. Sarcasm is a<lb />thinly veiled attempt to impress<lb />people by highlighting the<lb />faults of others in a pseudohu-<lb />morous way. Through sarcasm<lb /><lb />we judge and reject people, for-<lb />getting that they too are made<lb />in the image of God.<lb /><lb />A Judgmental and critical atti-<lb />tude. Jesus died to make us<lb />one, but criticism divides and<lb />destroys churches. People who<lb />are critical and judgmental have<lb />difficulty seeing the good in.<lb />others and, when they are con-<lb />fronted with it, are quick to ne-<lb />gate it through comparison. In<lb />Judging another person we are<lb />saying, "I can do it better, Why<lb />don't they just move over and<lb />let me do. it? <lb /><lb />Impatience. By being impatient<lb />we signify that our ideas, pro-<lb />jects, programs and schedules<lb />are more important than those<lb />of other people. Many times we<lb />have to wait on others but be-<lb />coming impatient at such times,<lb />regardless of who is at fault, is<lb />never justified. .<lb /><lb />, An unteachable spirit. None of<lb /><lb />us is above the need for correc-<lb /><lb />tion in some area of our lives.<lb /><lb />When we are con fronted, do we<lb />listen? Or do we ignore what<lb />that person is telling us? Do<lb />we accept his reproof? Or do .<lb />we become aloof and resentfi|<lb />that he would dare to correct<lb />us? If we can lay aside our<lb />pride, we will benefit from the<lb />insights of many wise and godly<lb />people. However, if we are un-<lb />willing to accept this kind of<lb />correction, we have become un-<lb />teachable.<lb /><lb />Self-pity. Self-pity results when<lb />we cling to our hurts, frustra-<lb />tions and disappointments in-<lb />stead of turning our problems<lb />over to the Lord. We do this<lb />because we enjoy. the attention .<lb />that comes when someone feels<lb />sorry for us and because we<lb />think we can do a better job of<lb />dealing with our problems thn<lb />God can.<lb /><lb />Is it possible, given the deceitful<lb />human heart and the deceptive<lb /><lb />nature of pride; to have victory<lb />over pride? Perhaps our goal<lb />should be not just freedom form<lb />pride but the opposite of pride:<lb />humility. Our focus should be<lb />Christlikeness, the essence of<lb />humility. Our concern then<lb />would be focused not only on<lb />getting rid of something but on<lb />yielding to Christ so that He<lb />can make us like Himself.<lb />We can begin-to define humil-<lb />ity by what it is not. Humility<lb />is not being embarrassed by the<lb />disclosure of our worst sins. It<lb />does not come from being<lb />shamed publicly, Humility is<lb />not a form of self-hatred, nor is<lb />it a low estimate of our gifts<lb />and abilities. It is not aesthetic<lb />withdrawal from the world, and<lb />it is not a mystical experience.<lb />What then is humility?<lb />Humility is dependence on<lb /><lb />. Humility is acknowledg-<lb />ing our absolute and total de-<lb />pendence on God, the Creator,<lb />and daily looking to Him as the<lb />one true Source of forgiveness<lb />and mercy, as the One who<lb />gives counsel and direction in<lb />every decision in life. Humility<lb />is a longing in our hearts for a<lb />relationship and communion<lb /><lb />"with God. Humility is the will<lb />ingness to be honest with our- <lb />se<lb /><lb />ves and with others, to be<lb />known for who we really are.<lb />We don't need to tell: everyone<lb />everything about ourgelyes, But<lb />we can come to terms With our<lb />fears and failures, and share<lb />them with godly people who<lb />are close to us,<lb />Honesty about our shortcom ings<lb />should be a way of life. For<lb /><lb />. example, if we fail to fulfill our<lb /><lb />x ep ogele<lb /><lb />responsibilities at work, we<lb />should admit that we were<lb />wrong and ask for forgiveness.<lb />If we offend a family member,<lb />we should humble ourselves<lb />and apologize for our insensi-<lb />tivity and impatience.<lb /><lb />BRING<lb />IN THIS.<lb />AD<lb />RECIEVE<lb />10% off<lb /><lb />f<lb /><lb /><lb />SUPER CENT<lb /><lb />ch Invent<lb />Will Be At No<lb />NO CHARGE!<lb /><lb />ER 4<lb /><lb />ory Some<lb />Iharge<lb /><lb />REGISTER<lb />FOR FREE<lb />REGBINER<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />9pe. I have come to the<lb />end of myself. I ask You to use<lb />this time to bring me to a place<lb />of brokenness. Do anything<lb />You need to do in my life to<lb />produce Christlikeness and hu-<lb />mility in me. I ask you to be<lb />ruthless in dealing with my sin.<lb />No matter how long it takes or<lb />what You have to do, I wel-<lb />come Your loving judgment in<lb />my heart. No matter what the<lb />cost, Lord, I commit myself to<lb />go Your way. I ask for no<lb />shortcuts to my growth." In<lb />Jesus name | pray Amen. Now<lb />when you have conflict instead<lb />of looking at it in a negative<lb />way, think of it as God wanting<lb /> to use that'conflict to show us<lb />what is in our heart.<lb /><lb />Ruthless honesty about our-<lb />Selves is the only way to break<lb />the pattern of pride and decep-<lb />tion. Humility brings liberty,<lb />healing, truth, growth, and rec-<lb />onciliation to God and others.<lb />We cannot force humility to<lb />grow, but we can choose to<lb />humble ourselves and, in so do-<lb />ing, welcome the indwelling<lb />Christ to rule supreme in our<lb />lives,<lb /><lb />Remember to pray without<lb />ceasing and keep on the whole<lb />armor of God.<lb /><lb />BRING IN<lb /><lb />THIS AD<lb /><lb />RECIEVE<lb />10% off<lb /><lb />.%<lb /><lb />a month<lb /><lb />3)<lb /><lb />ra<lb /><lb />kable and<lb />. Recounting how much the Army had changed, Becton, who also served as President of Prairie View "<lb />Memorial Dr. & Belvoir Highway Greenville,NC 27834 University, reviewed his 40-year military career. He cited segregation in the Army, the racial problems in<lb /><lb />the 1960s and 1970s. Today, he said, oas long as there is disproportionate opportunity in K-12, we'll need<lb />. 7 programs like affirmative action to allow minority youngsters to catch up as long as they meet the same<lb />s 5 ae al oka j standards when they graduate, which is what the military academies have done. .<lb /><lb />wail, Who served as Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command, cited the importance of affirmative action<lb />in dealing with race riots and breakdowns in discipline in the Navy. oPart of reason, he said, owas the lack<lb />of leadership corps that looked like lowest enlisted ranks in the Navy. In response to a question asked by<lb /><lb />Dionne -about the class make-up of the U.S. armed forces, Blair supported some type of universal service for<lb /><lb />all, saying osome Americans born on third base and thought they hit a triple. <lb /><lb />In commenting how the military amicus brief was constructed, Seitz stated that affirmative action can be<lb />narrowly tailored and that onobody has done better than the military...it established high standards and that<lb />all candidates meet those standards, they all successfully do it. <lb /><lb />Dionne, whose sister is in the Navy, reserve observed that owherever people stand on issue of affirmative ac-<lb />tion, there is broad and deep consensus about the achievements of armed forces in overcoming racial injus-<lb /><lb />tice and that something all Americans are proud of is that the U.S. military ohas succeeded in promoting<lb />achievement and high performance. <lb /><lb />E.J.
