We didn't get a<lb />chance to see his body, we<lb />didn't get a chance to see the<lb />police report," Mr. Vontoure<lb />said. The Sacramento .<lb /><lb />, Compas Office ruled that the<lb />am ? loy t 's death vee as ) |<lb /><lb />by oacute cocaine intoxica-<lb />tion." While the T Vontoure's<lb />concede that a "trace" amount<lb />of cocaine was present in their<lb />son's body at the time of his<lb /><lb />death, they maintain that ex-<lb /><lb />cessive force through a choke-<lb />hold or some other means by<lb />the sheriff's deputies asphyxi-<lb />ated the young man. The suit<lb />alleges the officers failed to<lb />call for needed medical assis-<lb />tance until after they deter-<lb />mined Anthony. "Me<lb />lack of information that has<lb />been forthcoming around the<lb />death of Anthony caused tre-<lb />mendous emotional pain and<lb />turmoil" attorney Burris said.<lb />"We're hoping this lawsuit will<lb />assist in their receiving some<lb />satisfaction, understanding and<lb /><lb />comfort in knowing what did<lb /><lb />happen to Anthony. Of course,<lb />the lawsuit itself cannot bring<lb /><lb />Anthony back to us. The majority of teachers in<lb />the system, white. The majority of the school aides or<lb />teacher assistants are Black and Hispanic. Many of them<lb />are just being notified that their low-paying jobs are being<lb />cut, or that they're being dismissed.<lb /><lb />Teachers in the New York school system aren't the<lb />worst-paid teachers in America, but they aren't the best<lb />paid, either. Teachers in the near suburbs of Westchester,<lb />Nassau and Suffolk counties are paid in many instances<lb />decidedly more. These suburbs devote their money, time<lb />and attention to the education of their children, who are<lb />primarily whites, who live there for a number of reasons.<lb /> The most important of these reasons for them is that they<lb />simply do not wish to be around Black and Hispanic peo-<lb />ple. Given this, New York City Ts best and brightest teach-<lb />ers, with the exception of Blacks and Hispanics, gravitate<lb />to the suburbs to live, and even when they do not, they try<lb />desperately to get jobs in suburban school systems, where<lb />they have partners working to help them.teach their chil-<lb />dren. These teachers cry out that they are overworked and<lb />underpaid, especially when they have failed in their<lb />attempt to move to the suburbs or get a job teaching there.<lb /><lb />Having been rejected by the suburbs for whatever reason<lb />~ lack of jobs, or inability to qualify for the jobs " a slew of<lb />resentful and angry teachers find their way into our school<lb />cgetaenetin ney mp estat edly 0 wig that coves vary lt<lb /><lb />about the performance of these teachers and everything<lb />about how many dimes, or dollars, can be added to their pay-<lb />check, and how many minutes of every day they will be<lb />allowed to do something other than teach our children,<lb /><lb />\<lb /><lb />stop any new idea and new approach to teaching a group<lb />of youngsters who have not been taught by the teachers in<lb />our system in too many years to count. In other words, our<lb />children are becoming functional illiterates with high<lb />school diplomas, in many instances, who have not yet<lb />learned to read or write. And they have certainly not been<lb />able to compete effectively with incoming people from sub-<lb />urbs who have been better trained and better taught, and<lb />who learned at an early age how to navigate the MTA sys-<lb /><lb />who stand to win, gain or lose most from the $12 billion<lb />school budget?<lb /><lb />We know that Ms. Weingarten has made her peace<lb />with following the money. We do not yet know whether the<lb />mayor or the chancellor will opt for the same for personal<lb />comfort, or for popularity with the unions. It certainly<lb />would not be for the money, for it is apparent that the<lb />chancellor and the mayor are well-fixed financially, We<lb />cannot speak for the wealth, or lack thereof, of Ms. Wein-<lb /><lb />tem in order to get to Wall Street and Midtown Manhat- | garten<lb /><lb />tan, where most of the jobs ~ especially the well-paying<lb />positions " are held by people who ride the rails from<lb />Westchester, Nassau, Suffolk and New Jersey.<lb /><lb />New York children ought to be able to compete effec-<lb />tively for these jobs. But they are not, due usually to the<lb />fact that teachers are not properly trained and the union<lb />leadership could give less than a damn whether the<lb />teachers teach our children. Thus, an attitude of failure<lb />at both ends of thé spectrum. Randi Weingarten is a<lb />product of this corrupt system, and it will remain that<lb />way until the teachers union is no longer a political jug-<lb />gernaut. .<lb /><lb />This is not at all to anoint Mayor Bloomberg for the job<lb />he has done with the school system. Certainly, it must be<lb />said, that he has done a better job than what was ever<lb />done by the Giuliani administration. As a matter of fact,<lb />every once in a while we get the idea that the mayor real-<lb />ly cares about what happens in the school system. His<lb />appointment of Deputy Mayor for Education Dennis Wal-<lb />cott and Chancellor Joel Klein gave us reason to believe -<lb />at first blush " that the mayor could actually care about<lb />what happens to our children. Certainly he ought to as a<lb /><lb />The fight that is now well underway will hurt a great<lb />many people. Most of these will be our children. If we<lb />decide that the mayor and his chancellor are the guilty<lb />parties, then we have to organize the city in such a way as<lb />to rid ourselves of those by defeating Mayor Bloomberg in<lb />his next election. For Ms. Weingarten, it is a more compli-<lb />cated matter. Union members must decide her fate. Given<lb />her success at getting money for them, her defeat by elec-<lb />tion of the union sounds like a long shot. There has to be<lb />another way to do it. It must be found. .<lb /><lb />Given the dilemma in which the majority of the resi-<lb />dents of New York City find themselves when it comes to<lb />educating our children, it seems to us that we are in a<lb />quandary, between a rock and hard place. One thing that<lb />we can vaguely believe is that the mayor and the chancel-<lb />lor want to do the right and decent thing when it comes to<lb />educating our children. Not so for the teachers union, if we<lb />are to be guided by the way the leadership of the union is<lb />acting at this time. That is a pity, because over the years we<lb />have come to think of the teachers union as one of the more<lb />enlightened and caring organizations in labor. The last few<lb /><lb />years have made that belief an impossible dream.<lb /><lb />is Swahili for olight of Kenya")<lb />are still legal tender and- were<lb />ms held in the Kenyan Central<lb /><lb />Until last week. all Kenyan bank<lb /><lb />notes bore the face of Daniel arap<lb />Moi, who became president in 1978<lb /><lb />when Kenyatta died and who stayed<lb /><lb />in power until last year when<lb /><lb />President Moi Kibaki was elected.<lb /><lb />One of Kibaki Ts election pledges<lb /><lb />was that he wouldn't print new<lb />bank notes bearing his own<lb />portrait. <lb />Faith May<lb />GOD, SATAN AND<lb />WAR<lb /><lb />War is not new, nor is it pecu-<lb />liar to Planet Earth. War began<lb />. long before earth was created,<lb />and it began right in heaven,<lb />right in God's own house! The<lb />most magnificent being God<lb />has ever created, Lucifer the<lb />Lightbearer, who hovered over<lb />the throne of God and orches-<lb />trated the heavenly choir, be-<lb />came puffed up with pride. He<lb />decided that he was doing all<lb />the work---not God---and there-<lb /><lb />of O. New Gen<lb /><lb />the word and sent Satan into<lb />eternal obliviion? Certainly, He<lb />could have---God can do any-<lb />thing! So why didn't He? Is<lb />there something about war that<lb />is more than we can see on the<lb />surface?<lb /><lb />When we look back at the fail<lb />of Satan, it is obvious that the<lb />first war in the universe came<lb />about as the direct result of sin.<lb />Lucifer's pride grew into ava-<lb />rice. Avarice formented rebel-<lb />lion. Rebellion disrupted the<lb />wonderful harmony of heaven.<lb />Beings created to be eternal,<lb />who had felowshipped together<lb />for eons of time in love and<lb />praise of God, suddenly clashed<lb />in battle. Hatred ed the<lb />hearts of the fallen angels, who<lb />has been deceived into follow-<lb />ing Satan. .<lb /><lb />As the war in heaven found its<lb />way to earth, mankind was con-<lb />scripted by Satan to fight on his<lb />side in the rebellion against<lb />God. In the moment that man<lb />fell at the Garden of Eden, the<lb />utopian peace that had marked<lb />life in paradise was broken, and<lb />sin entered the world. That<lb /><lb />world is precarious at best. God<lb />allows war to drive men to<lb />their knees and acknowledge<lb />Him as Lord and Savior.<lb />God is not the author of war.<lb />That comes from Satan. But<lb />God Himself has set the exam-<lb />le for us, by resisting evil and<lb />ghting back against the en-<lb />emy. When Lucifer launched<lb />his campaign to take over<lb />Heaven, God did not sit batk<lb /><lb />- and allow time to "give peace a T<lb /><lb />chance." He knew that the devil<lb />would never abandon his quest<lb />for power and adoration.<lb /><lb />God even knew that Satan's re-<lb />bellion would spread to planet<lb />earth. He knew the terrible<lb />heartache it would cause: the<lb />blood that would be shed, the<lb />souls that would eventually end<lb />up in hell. Yet, He marshaled<lb />the angels of heaven anyway,<lb /><lb />; peace will never be returned to and commanded them to do<lb />fore he deserved the praise of making, until Jesus returns in battle, driving Satan and the<lb />the heavenly host. So he set out power and glory at the end of deceived fallen angels out of<lb />to tear God from His throne. In the tribulation, Heaven. I want to be so many<lb />things for different, yet under-<lb /><lb />standing, reasons. One goal of<lb /><lb />mine is to become a lawyer.<lb />What inspired me was the fact<lb /><lb />that it was the only law job that<lb /><lb />I saw that could help people<lb />and debate about things at the<lb />same time. That and the fact<lb />that my mother has gone<lb />through things that could have<lb />taken legal action, but didn't<lb />because her parents weren't fa-<lb />miliar with the way the legal<lb />system worked. I also want to<lb />become a professional singer<lb />and actor. I want to become a<lb />famous actor and singer because<lb />I want to have enough money to<lb />help people that are in need. |<lb />even have planned to help peo-<lb />ple who are in need with a job<lb />0 help them pet started on<lb />their way. I like helping le,<lb />and when I saw on television<lb />how some countries live be-<lb />cause of lack of governmental<lb /><lb />$s<lb /><lb />funds, it bothered me. I said to<lb />myself that if I had lots of<lb />money I could help that country<lb />out, while entertaining them at<lb />the same time. People ask me,<lb />"Well how are you going to<lb /><lb />an actor. and a lawyer at the<lb />same time?" |.'tell them well if<lb />I was an actor and lawyer, I<lb />could defend the other actors<lb />who get in law suits because<lb />they will know me from either<lb />acting with them or hearin<lb />about me in the acting fiel<lb />somewhere down the road.<lb />Some people have double ma-<lb />jors, some even triple, and I fig-<lb />ure that if they can do that I<lb />can be more than just an actor<lb />or just a lawyer. My grand-<lb /><lb />- mother has inspired.me to con, -. ih<lb /><lb /> tinue with the plans I haye for<lb /><lb />my life by telling me to.keep on .<lb /><lb />doing what I'm doing no matter<lb />what people say, I have this<lb />idea of a program that can keep<lb />teenagers off the streets and<lb />from getting into trouble, drugs,<lb />and from getting kicked out or<lb />drop out of school. I developed<lb />this idea when I took a dual en-<lb />rollment class at one of the lo-<lb />cal community colleges in my<lb />area and took a course with a<lb />group of officers and future law<lb />enforcement workers. | also de-<lb />veloped this idea while studying -<lb />some people from my school,<lb />including myself, and break<lb />their lives into segments to see<lb />why they do the things they do.<lb />I put all the information to-<lb />gether and shared it with my<lb /><lb />' professor and she thought it<lb /><lb />was a wonderful idea. In the fu-<lb />ture I am planning on fulfilling<lb />this idea and spreading it across<lb />America. However, most of my<lb />inspirations comes from Jesus<lb />Christ, because without him, I<lb />would not have a future goal to<lb />tell or to fulfill.<lb /><lb />w University Alumni welcomes new president... <lb />Salute To Pastor C.B.Gray US, Cy tures Traqi's Dr. Germ<lb />of Triumph Miss. Bap t. Ch. a ae a, Coalition |<lb /><lb />By PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press Writer<lb /><lb />. WASHINGTON - Coalition forces have taken custody of the Iraqi scientist known as "Dr. Germ" for her<lb />. a . work in making biological weapons, according to Pentagon officials, who said they also had field reports<lb />that the head of Saddam Hussein's military has been captured. Officials were hoping the latest Iraqis cap- .<lb />tured might provide information about Saddam's regime and its unconventional weapons programs, though<lb />former Iraqi leaders previously taken into custody have largely continued to deny the country had such<lb />-weapons.<lb />The scientist, Dr. Rihab Rashid Taha, had been negotiating her surrender for days and turned herself in over<lb /><lb />_ the weekend, said Maj. Brad Lowell of the U.S. Central Comm-and. U.N. weapons inspectors nicknamed<lb />Taha "Dr. Germ" because she ran the Iraqi biological weapons Yacility where scientists worked with anthrax,<lb />botulinum toxin and aflatoxin. A microbiologist, Taha holds a doctorate from the University of East Anglia<lb />in Britain.<lb /><lb />Also reported captured was Armed Forces Chief of Staff Ibrahim Ahmad Abd al Sattar Muhammad al<lb />Tikriti, Pentagon officials said, citing initial reports from the region. He is No.1! on a list issued last<lb />month of the 55 most wanted former members of Sadd-am's regime and the jack of spades in a card deck is-<lb />sued to troops looking for regime leaders.<lb />No details of his capture were available. Taha is not on the list of the 55, but among 200 Iraqis that Defense<lb />Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has said are sought but who have not all been named publicly. Taha once<lb />said in a radio interview that Iraq was justified in producing germ weapons for its self-defense.<lb />American forces have been trying to capture her and last month raided her Baghdad home, carrying away<lb />boxes of documents but not finding her or her husband.<lb />Taha is married to Amer Rashid, who held top posts in Saddam's missile programs and was oil minister be-<lb />fore the war. Rashid surrendered to U.S. forces April 28, 12 days after that Baghdad raid. The couple was<lb />married in 1994 and has a young daughter, Rashid was the six of spades in the deck of cards. Current and<lb />former inspectors who interviewed Taha in the mid-1990s described her as difficult and dour. The Iraqis<lb />presented her as the head of the biological program, but inspectors suspect she may have been fronting for<lb />someone more senior. She met with U.N. teams before the war on technical issues.<lb />Officials have captured a number of former officials who they had hoped would give information on the un-<lb />conventional weapons programs the Bush administration has said the regime had-: .<lb />Last week they reported the capture of Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash, among the 55 most wanted and a<lb />woman officials believe played a key role in rebuilding Baghdad's biological weapons capability in the<lb />1990s. Nearly two dozen of the top 55 also are in custody, officials have said. Chief U.N. weapons inspector<lb />Hans Blix said last month that Taha and her husband, Rashid, would be among "the most interesting per-<lb />sons" for the Americans to question. Blix's teams pulled out of Iraq shortly before the war began after 3 1/2<lb />months work. a<lb />The Bush administration, whieh bitterly disagreed with Blix over whether Iraq has chemical, biological or<lb />nuclear weapons, has not invited U.N. inspectors to take part in a continuing U.S.-led hunt for weapons.<lb />The U.N. Security Council's cease-fire resolution after the first Gulf War which evicted Saddam forces that<lb />had invaded Kuwait " included stringent demands for the destruction of Iraq's chemical, biological and nu-<lb />clear weapons and payment of war damages to Kuwait.<lb />The main reason the administration cited for going to war was to disarm Saddam of unconventional weap-<lb />ons, which the regime denied having.<lb />In an interview broadcast in February, Taha said Iraq was justified in producing germ weapons in the 1980s<lb />and 1990s to defend itself. She told the British Broadcasting Corp., she was involved in producing Iraq's fi-<lb />nal weapons declaration to the United Nations. They're messy, bad for the environment, and can result in stiff<lb />financial penalties from state regulators. Greenville Utilities does<lb />everything it can to prevent sewer spills. But we can Tt do it alone. You play<lb />an important role in helping us maintain an efficient public sanitary<lb />sewer system.<lb /><lb />What causes sewer spills? It Ts simple. They're caused by improper<lb />disposal of items into the sewer system. We ask you to be aware of<lb />the following guidelines: |<lb /><lb />@ Please avoid pouring fats, oils or grease from cooking down the<lb />drain. Instead, coilect them in a container and dispose in the<lb />trash.<lb /><lb />@ Please don Tt use your toilets as a wastebasket. Place a waste-<lb />basket in the bathroom to dispose of items such as disposable<lb />diapers and personal hygiene products.<lb /><lb />* Unless you have a garbage disposal, please don Tt use your drain<lb />to dispose of food scraps. Place food scraps in waste containers<lb />or garbage bags for disposal. .<lb /><lb />Salute To Our Pastor. ...... The THuaph Missionary Baptist Church Family<lb /><lb />We appreciate your cooperation in following those few simple<lb />guidelines. Together, we can protect our sewer system and our<lb />environment. For more information, please contact us at 551-1551.<lb /><lb />\Greenville<lb />%, Utilities<lb /><lb />honored their pastor, Rev. C. B, Gray, for all of his efforts in leading his church family<lb />through Hurricane Floyd. Rev. House, pastor of St.. Peter Missionary Baptist Church,<lb />helped to spearhead the event along with the Hasley Family whose mother was a great<lb />supporter of the church being remembered.
