It was<lb />them to other tribes or slave traders for sell at the coast to shippers<lb /><lb />common practice to kill captives-or trade<lb />in the slave trade.<lb />The trade was banned<lb />British Royal Navy was<lb />the end of 19th century. _<lb /><lb />For the British to énd the slave trade, significant dbstacles had to be overcome. In the eighteenth century<lb />the slave trade was an integral part of the Atlantic economy. The economies of the European colonies in the<lb />Caribbean, the American colonies, and Brazil required vast amounts of man power to harvest the bountiful<lb />agricultural goods. In 1790 the British West Indies, islands such as Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad, had a<lb /><lb />by international agreement in the eatly 19th century, but this ban was ignored and the<lb /><lb />ordered to enforce the ban, this succeded in eliminating the Atlantic slave trade by<lb /><lb />slave population of 524 000, while the French had 643 000 in their West Indian possessions.<lb /><lb />; Other powers such as Spain, the Netherlands, and<lb />Denmark had large numbers of slaves as well. Despite<lb />these high populations more slaves were always required, Harsh<lb />conditiees and ic i left the stave popula-<lb />tion with well below replacement fertility levels. .<lb /><lb />By 1800 the English had imported around 1.7 million slaves<lb />to their West Indian possessions since 1600, the fact that there<lb />were well over a million fewer slaves in the British colonies<lb />than had béen imported to them illustrates the conditions in<lb />which they lived, ;<lb /><lb />The immorality of slavery was excused by economics. Slav-<lb />ery was involved in some of the most immensely profitable in-<lb />dustries of the time. Seventy percent of the Slaves brought to the<lb />new world were used to produce sugar, the most labor intensive<lb />crop. The rest were employed harvesting coffee, cotton, and to-<lb /><lb />These eproden acts woekd te ae Europe or Africa. Th<lb /><lb />shipped to or Africa. The<lb />ships from Europe would then return cafrying manufactured<lb />materials and foodstuffs.<lb /><lb />The ships from Africa would return carrying slaves. The en-<lb />ire economy of the Atlantic sector depended on fresh supplies<lb />of slaves to the West Indies, and this triangular Atlantic trade<lb />formed the core of maritime trade throughout the world. These<lb />colonies were some of the most important possessions of each<lb /><lb />wer.<lb />France in 1763, for instance, agreed to lose the entire vast<lb />colony of New France in exchange for keeping the minute is-<lb />land of Guadeloupe.<lb /><lb />By far the most successful West Indian colonies in 1800 be-<lb />longed to the United Kingdom. -<lb /><lb />aw " plan lela SES<lb /><lb />om cboliegie be,<lb />' i Pein 7<lb />was, Génie<lb />i , ' nine<lb /><lb />ops<lb /><lb />- The British islarids T produced the most sugar, and quickly<lb />British p became the largest consumers of sugar. West In-<lb />dian sugar ubiquitous as an additive to Chinese tea.<lb /><lb />-Products of American slave labor soon permeated every level<lb />of British society with tobacco, coffee, and especially sugar all<lb />being indispensable elements of daily life for all classes.<lb /><lb />To its colonies Britain also had the largest fleet of<lb />slave ships, mostly operating out of Liverpool and Bristol.<lb /><lb />In Liverpool, by the late seventeenth century, one out of every<lb />four ships that left harbour was a slaver. They were highly prof-<lb />itable ventures and played very important economic roles in<lb />those two cities.<lb /><lb />How did the abolition of the slave trade occur if it was SO eco-<lb />nomically important and successful? The historiography of an-<lb />swers to this question is a long and interesting one. Before the<lb />Second World War the study of the abolition movement was<lb />performed primarily by British scholars who believed that the<lb />anti-slavery movement was probably among the three or four<lb />perfectly virtuous pages in the history of nations.<lb /><lb />This opinion was controverted in 1944 by the West Indian his-<lb />torian, Eric Williams, who argued that the end of the slave trade<lb />to economic transitions totally unconnected to any morality.<lb /><lb />iams T thesis was soon brought into question as well, how-<lb />ever. Williams based his<lb />Indian colonies were in decline at the early point of nineteenth<lb />century and were losing their political and economic importance<lb />to Britain. This decline the slave system into an econom-<lb />ically burdensome one that the British were only too willing to<lb />do away with. .<lb />ihe main difficulty with this argument is that the decline on-<lb /><lb />y<lb />1807 before which slavery was flourishing economically.<lb /><lb />The decHine in the West Indies is more likely to be an effect of<lb />the suppression of the slave trade as the cause. The falling prices<lb />for the commodities produced by slave labor such as sugar and<lb />coffee can be easily discounted as evidence shows the falls in<lb />Price lead to great increases in demand, actually increasing total<lb />profits for the importers.<lb /><lb />Profits for the slave trade remained at around ten percent of<lb />inyestment and showed no evidence of being on the decline.<lb /><lb />Land prices in the West Indies, an important tool for analyz-<lb />ing the economy of the area did not begin to decrease until after<lb />the slave trade was discontinued. The Sugar colonies were not in<lb />decline at all, in fact they were at he peak of their economic in-<lb />fluence in 1807,<lb /><lb />Williams also had reason to be biased, He was heavily in-<lb />volved in the movements for independence of the Caribbean<lb />colonies and had motive to try to extinguish the idea of such a<lb />munificent action by the colonial overlord.<lb /><lb />A third generation of scholars lead by the likes of Drescher<lb />and Anstey have discounted most of Williams arguments, but<lb />still acknowledge that morality had to be combined with the<lb />forces of politics and economic theory to bring about the end of<lb />the slave trade.<lb /><lb />The movements that played the greatest role in actually con-<lb /><lb />vincing Westminster to outlaw the slave trade were religious.<lb />The " of evangelical protestant groups coupled with the<lb />These were certainly a minority, but they were a fer-<lb />vent one many dedicated individuals. Portugal and Spain, which were indebted to<lb />Britain after the Napoleonic Wars, slowly agreed to accept a large<lb />cash payments to first reduce and then eliminate the slave trade.<lb /><lb />By 1853 the British government had paid Portugal over three<lb />million pounds, and Spain over one million in order to end the<lb /> Slave trade. Brazil, however, did not agree to stop trading in slaves<lb />until Britain took military action against its coastal areas in and<lb />threatened a permanent blockade of the nation Ts ports in 1852.<lb />"For France the British first tried to impose a solution during<lb />the negotiations to at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, but Rus-<lb />sia and Austria did not agree. The French people and govern-<lb />ment had deep.misgivings about conceding to<lb /><lb />Britain Ts demands. Not only did Britain demand that other<lb />nations ban the slave trade, but also demanded the right to po-<lb />lice the ban.<lb /><lb />The Royal Navy had to be granted permission to search any<lb />Suspicious ships and seize any found to be carrying slaves, or<lb />equipped for doing so. It is these conditions especially that kept<lb />France involved in the slave trade for so long.<lb /><lb />While France formally agreed to ban the trading of slaves in '<lb /><lb />1815, they did not allow Britain to police the ban, nor did they<lb /><lb />do much to enforce it themselves and thus a large black market<lb /><lb />Also such a reformist movement was viewed as tainted by the<lb />conservative backlash after the revolution.<lb /><lb />The French slave trade thus did not come to a complete halt<lb />until 1848.<lb /><lb />While slavery had been abolished in the U.S. following the<lb />Civil War, it took another 100 years before apartheid was final-<lb />ly outlawed. .<lb /><lb />argument upon the idea that the West.<lb /><lb />to manifest itself after slave trading was banned in T<lb /><lb />Where Black History began<lb /><lb />by Valerie Cunningham<lb />Special to the Tri-State Defender<lb /><lb />For more than a century Africans and black Americans were<lb />openly bought and sold throughout the colony along with other<lb />imported items. Surviving documentation shows that slave mer-<lb />chandising in Portsmouth was conducted according to common<lb />business practices of the day.<lb /><lb />Samuel Moore, a ship owner and captain whose enterprises<lb />involved trips to the slave coast of Guinea, sold two male slaves<lb />to Archibald McPhaedres in 1726.<lb /><lb />The accounts of Hugh Hall show him importing slaves from<lb />Barbados aboard his ship the Katherine in 1729 and 1730. The<lb />New Hampshire Gazette advertised slave sales from ships trad-<lb />ing between Africa, the West Indies and America, as in this ex-<lb />ample: oTo be sold ...a few Negroes, lately imported in the snow<lb />Gen. Townshend . . . from the West Indies . .. at Stavers Tavern. ?<lb />Some slave sales occurred at public meeting places. And the LORD said<lb />unto him, What is that in thine<lb />hand? And he said, A rod." |<lb />want to ask you that question<lb />today, "What is that in you<lb />4 hand? What is that that God has<lb />given you and what is that that<lb />God has i<lb />What is that that's in your<lb />hand." Moses saw in his hand a<lb />rod and so often ;<lb /><lb />Bors<lb /><lb />special thing in our life and<lb />given us a i<lb />special anointing. And we are<lb />just like Moses was, it's just a<lb />rod. But what Moses did not<lb />understand that what he had in<lb />his hand was not just a rod, it<lb />was "A Rod" and "A Rod" was<lb />about to become "The Rod". It<lb />was about to become the Rod of<lb />God in Moses T hand. And |<lb />want to tell you, you might look<lb />around today and say what is it<lb />that I have, whose going to<lb />listen to me, what can I do. |<lb />just have a Rod. I just have a<lb />stick. I don't have anything<lb />special. But what we will find<lb />Out as we look at the life of<lb />Moses is that it was more than<lb />just a Rod in his hand. It was<lb />vinely T allowed10 be placed. in<lb />Moses hand to be used at a later<lb />time. That's<lb />not really 7 tip what is<lb />important is that God allowed<lb />Moses to use what he had that<lb />was familiar to him. You see<lb />one day while on the back side<lb />of thé mountain Moses saw a<lb />bush burning but the fire did not<lb />consume it. He decided to go<lb />and take a closer look at it and<lb />when he did he heard the voice<lb />of God call him by name<lb />"Moses, Moses" and he an-<lb />swered and said here am 1, God<lb />identified Himself to Moses and<lb />pn him that I have seen the<lb />afflictions of my people and |<lb />have heard their cthes by reason<lb />-of their task. masters, And-I am<lb />come down T to deliver them out<lb />of the hand of the Egyptians,<lb />and to bring them up out of that<lb />land unto a Bood land and a<lb />S large, unto a:land flowing with<lb />milk and honey. Now therefore,<lb />behold, the cry of the children<lb />of Israel is come unto me-. and<lb />I have also seen the oppression<lb />wherewith the Egyptians op-<lb />press them. Come now there-<lb />pare and the will send thee unto<lb />*haraoh, that thou mayest ring<lb />forth my people the children of<lb />Israel out of Egypt (Exodus 3).<lb />You see Moses up in the<lb />house of Pharaoh, so the life<lb />style of the Egyptian was very<lb />familiar to him. All he needed<lb />was the courage to use what<lb />God had already given him.<lb />When God told Moses, He was<lb />sending him to Pharaoh, that he<lb />may bring the children of Israel<lb />out of Egypt, Moses had reser-<lb />vation, he question God, yes,<lb />saints we can question God.<lb />"And Moses said unto God,<lb />Who am I, that I should go unto<lb />Pharaoh, and that I should bring<lb />forth the children of Israel out<lb /><lb />of Egypt? And he said,<lb />Catan I will be with thee;<lb />and this shall be a token unto<lb />thee, that I have sent thee:<lb /><lb />ECTIONS<lb /><lb />the people out of Egypt, ye shall<lb /><lb />serve God upon this |<lb />_ And Moses said unto God, \<lb /><lb />when I come unto the<lb />children of Israel, and shall say<lb />unto them, The God of your<lb />fathers hath sent me unto you;<lb />and they shall say to me, What<lb />is his name? what shal] | say<lb />unto them? And God said unto<lb />, Moses, | AM THAT I AM: and<lb />he. said, Thus shalt thou say T<lb />unto the children of Israel, |<lb />AM bath sent me unto you.<lb />(Exodus 3; 1 I- | 4)<lb />Moses was in the presence<lb />of the God, God prepared him<lb />with signs and wonders that<lb />would remove the fear and the<lb />doubt that God's power was<lb />greater than Pharaoh's. God<lb />didn't use anything new to show<lb />Moses his power He used what<lb />Moses already had in his hands<lb />"A Rod'@ And he said, Cast it<lb />on the ground: And he cast it on<lb />the ground, and it became a<lb />serpent, and Moses fled from<lb />before it. And the LORD said<lb />unto Moses, Put forth thine.<lb />hand, and take it by the tail.<lb />And he put forth his hand, and<lb />caught it, and it became a rod in<lb />his hand: That they may believe<lb />that the LORD God of their<lb />fathers, the God of Abraham,<lb />the God of Isaac, and the God |<lb />of Jacob, hath appeared unto<lb />thee. And the LORD said<lb />furthermore unto him, Put now<lb />thine hand into thy bosom. And<lb />he put his hand into his bosom:<lb />and when he took it out, behold.<lb />his hand was leprous as snow.:<lb />And he said, Put thine hand into<lb />thy bosom again. And he put his<lb />hand into his bosom again; and<lb />plucked it out of his<lb />and, behold, it was turned again<lb />as his other flesh.<lb /><lb />___ God showed Moses these<lb />Signs not to frighten him but to<lb />prepare him to get the job done.<lb />Moses, like many of us, had<lb />reservations about the task that<lb />was set before him, but he loved<lb />God enough and he feared God<lb />enough that he. These video excerpts<lb />were taken in the eighth - and last<lb />- month of Bashir Ts shooting with<lb />Michael and after the time Bashir<lb />and Michael were in Bertin. In his<lb />film, Bashir says that it was in<lb /><lb />Berlin that he began to change his<lb />mind | Michael's treatment<lb />of his<lb /><lb />children.<lb />Yet; the Jackson footage<lb />clearly: shows that Bashir was<lb />actually continuing to praise<lb /><lb />Michael. On the face of it, either<lb />Martin oBashir Was lying to<lb />Michael or was misleading his<lb />audience in his voice-overs on the<lb />film. Bashir knew that Michael's<lb />personal cameraman was filming<lb />at various times during the<lb />course of his interviews.<lb /><lb />in relation to the 1993<lb /><lb />allegations made by Jordy<lb />Chandler which have again been<lb />recycled by certain newspapers,<lb />Michael has authorised the issue<lb />of the following: Michael cannot<lb />understand why Jordy Chandler<lb />ever made these allegations over<lb />10 years ago.<lb /><lb />Michael Jackson then, and has<lb />ever since, vehemently denied<lb />that these events ever took place.<lb />Michael does not know who<lb />manipulated Jordy Chandler to<lb />make these allegations at the<lb />time, nor has he ever understood<lb />why, other than the motives of<lb />some people to exploit both Jordy<lb />and Michael, for.financial gain.<lb />The reason Michael chose to pay<lb />Jordy Chandler a considerable<lb />sum of money, rather than be<lb />publicly vindicated following a<lb />trial, was to avoid being subjected<lb />to a media circus. Despite his<lb />profound hurt at the allegations<lb />made by Jordy, Michael did not, at<lb />the thme,,think it os ee te<lb />to subject a 4 year ¥ to<lb /> Glonged litigation, the effects of<lb /><lb />_ whieh on Jordy appeared to be of<lb /><lb />little concern to those<lb /><lb />manipulating Chandler at the | ¢.<lb /><lb />time. Michael Jackson has<lb />respected the og rton er<lb />confidentiality imposed on all t<lb /><lb />parties to the prior proceedings,<lb />yet someone has chosen to violate<lb />that confidentiality and use<lb />Jordy Ts 1993 statements to further<lb /><lb />7<lb />7<lb /><lb />&amp; ®<lb />sully Michael's character. Michael<lb />Jackson said Sunday: oI am<lb />bewildered at the length to which<lb />People will go to port me so<lb />negatively. 1 will say again that I<lb />have never, and would never,<lb />harm a child. In fact, they're<lb />very much flesh-and-blood and<lb />focused on being productive and<lb />doing well in the real world.<lb /><lb />That means I wasn Tt among<lb /><lb />those timeworn. figments of the ©<lb /><lb />fevered imaginations of the oppo-<lb />nents of affirmative action "the<lb /> ounqualified ? black youth unde-<lb />servedly occupying seats at lead-<lb />ing colleges and universities,<lb />Instead, I was at the annual<lb />conference of the African-<lb />American Student Union of the<lb />Harvard Business School. It<lb />brought nearly 500 HBS students<lb />and alumni (and a large contin-<lb />gent of undergraduates from var-<lb />jous colleges) together in<lb />Cambridge, Massachusetts for<lb />three days of discussion, advice<lb />and #etworking. id<lb /> The conference Ts theme was<lb /> oRedefining Wealth: Claim It,<lb />Grow It, Sustain It! ? But, as<lb />Rayford L. Davis and Raquelle E.<lb />Thigpen, the organization's co-<lb /><lb />ia:<lb /><lb />s<lb /><lb />presidents, stated, their intent<lb />was oto view net financial worth<lb />as only one facet of what being<lb />truly wealthy really means. ? To<lb />that end, many speakers on the<lb /><lb />_ Various panels made much of the<lb /><lb />necessity of acquiring wealth,<lb />not merely for self-satisfaction,<lb />but in order to aid the economic<lb />development and political<lb />progress of black communities,<lb /><lb />As the Supreme Court pre-<lb />pares to rule on the University of<lb />Michigan's affirmative action<lb />program, this was a gathering<lb />that underscored with crystalline<lb />clarity two things.<lb /><lb />The first thing it makes obvi-<lb />ous is what affirmative action has<lb />done for the larger American<lb />society. :<lb /><lb />Last weekend Ts was the 31st<lb />annual conference staged by the<lb /><lb />HBS black student union "a fact T<lb /><lb />which refers in outline to the sig-<lb />nificant numbers of African-<lb />American students who have<lb />graduated from Harvard and<lb />other business schools during the<lb />past three decades and gone on to<lb />contribute to innumerable corpo-<lb />rate bottom lines, staff in grow-<lb />ing numbers the faculties of<lb />Harvard and other business<lb />schools, and enrich the larger<lb />American society. ;<lb /><lb />The second thing conferences<lb />like this make obvious is why<lb />some people are against affirma-<lb /><lb />* tive action.<lb /><lb />For it is at gatherings like these<lb />that one can see those people who<lb />are at the center of the raging<lb />debate over affirmative action,<lb />but who are rarely actually talked<lb />about and talked to: black stu-<lb /><lb />©<lb /><lb />Affirmation Action Ts Invisible People<lb /><lb />dents and alumni from top-rung<lb />colleges and universities who<lb />represent both compelling indi-<lb />vidual stories of achievement<lb />and the individual examples of<lb />an entire ethnic group Ts advance<lb />deeper into the American main-<lb />stream. . oo<lb /> oIt is at gatherings like these<lb />that one gets a powerful sense of<lb /><lb />the depth and breadth and vari-<lb /><lb />ety of achievement orientation<lb />among black Americans.<lb /><lb />The writer Albert Murray<lb />referred to this drive in The<lb />Spyglass Tree, a fictionalized<lb />memoir of his youth; as the<lb />indelible oancestral imperative to<lb />do something and become some-<lb />thing and be somebody. ? It was a<lb /><lb />quality fully evident in the<lb /><lb />resumes of the panelists, which<lb />contained<lb />degrees, academic honors, and<lb />post-graduate achievements in<lb />the business world to impress<lb />even the most jaded.<lb /><lb />It was even more apparent in<lb />the intensity of the spirit of the<lb />many panelists. Whether they<lb />were conservative corporate<lb />types or the relatively more free-<lb />wheeling entrepreneurs, their<lb />commitment to the pursuit of<lb />achievement was almost palpa-<lb />ble.<lb /><lb />And it was apparent in atten-<lb />tiveness of the undergraduates<lb />among the throng to every word<lb />their elders spoke.<lb /><lb />David A. <lb />Mar. 07,' 2003 Pg9<lb /><lb />What if there were no Black people. ..<lb />This is a story of a little boy named Theo, who woke up One morning and asked God,<lb /><lb /> oWhat if there were no Black people in the world ?<lb />Well God thought about that for a moment and then said,<lb /><lb /> oSon, follow me ian today and let Ts just see what it would be like if there<lb />were no Black people in the world. Get dressed and we will get started. ?<lb />Theo ran to his room to put on his clothes and shoes. But there were no shoes, and his clothes were all wrinkled.<lb /><lb />He looked for the iron, but when he reached for the ironing board, it was no longer there. You see Sarah Boone, a Black woman, invented<lb /><lb />the ironing board and Jan E. Matzelinger, a Black man, invented the shoe lasting machine. oOh well, God said, go and do your hair. ?<lb /><lb />Theo ran in his room to comb his hair, but the comb was not there. You see, Walter Sammons, a Black man, invented the comb.<lb />Theo decided to just brush his hair, but the brush was gone. You see, Lydia 0. Newman, a Black female<lb /><lb />invented the brush. Well, he was a sight, no shoes, wrinkled clothes, hair a mess without the hair care inventions of<lb /><lb />Madam C.J. Walker, well, you get the picture. God told Theo, oLet's do the chores around the house and then take a trip to the grocery<lb /><lb />store. ? Theo's job was to sweep the floor. He swept and swept and swept. When he reached for the dustpan, it was<lb />not there. You see, Lloyd P. Ray, a Black man, invented the dustpan. So he swept his pile of dirt over<lb />in the corner and left it there. He then decided to mop the floor, but the mop was gone.<lb />You see, Thomas W. Stewart, a Black man Anvented the mop.<lb />Theo thought to himself, oI Tm not having any luck. ? oWell son, ? God said. oWe should wash the clothes<lb />and prepare a list for the grocery store. ? When he was finished, Theo went to place the clothes in the dryer,<lb /><lb />but it was not there. You see, George T. Samon, a Black man, invented the clothes dryer.<lb /><lb />Theo got a pencil and some paper to prepare the list for the market, but noticed that the pencil lead was broken,<lb />well he was out of luck because John Love, a black man, invented the pencil sharpener. He reached for a<lb />pen, but it was not there because William Purvis, a Black man, invented the fountain pen. As a matter of fact,<lb /><lb />Lee Burridge invented the type writing machine, and W.A.Lavette, the printing press.<lb /><lb />So they decided to head out to the market. Well, when Theo opened the door, he noticed \* grass was as<lb /><lb />high as he was tall. You see the lawn mower was invented by John Burr, a Black man, ey made their<lb /><lb />way over to the car and found that it just wouldn Tt go, You see, Robert Spikes, {Black man, invented the<lb /><lb />automatic gear shift and Joseph Gammel invented the supercharge system for internal combustion engines.<lb /><lb />They noticed that the few cars that were moving were running into each other and having wrecks because therer<lb /><lb />were no traffic signals. You see, Garrett A. Morgan, a Black man invented the traffic light.<lb /><lb />Well, it was getting late, so they walked to the market, got their groceries and returned home. Just when they<lb />were about to put away the milk, eggs and butter, they noticed the refrigerator was gone. You see,<lb />John Standard, a Black man, invented the refrigerator. So they put the food on the counter. By this time,<lb />they noticed it was getting mighty cold. Theo went to turn up the heat and what do you know, Alice Parker,<lb /><lb />a Black female, invented the heating furnace, Even in the summer time they would have been out of luck<lb /><lb />because Frederick Jones, a Black man, invented the air conditioner. It was almost time for Theo's father to arrive home. He<lb /><lb />usually took the bus, but there was no bus because it precursor was the electric trolley, invented by another Black man,<lb /><lb />Elbert T. Robinson. He usually took the elevator from his office on the 20th floor, but there was no elevator because<lb />- Alexander Miles, a Black man,<lb /><lb />invented the elevator. He usually dropped off the office mail at a nearby mailbox,<lb />but it was no longer there because Phillip Downing,<lb /><lb />the postmarking and canceling machine. Theo sat<lb />he asked, oWhy are you sitting in the dark? ? Why??<lb />the light bulb. Theo quickly learned what it woul<lb /><lb />a Black man, invented the letter drop mailbox and William Barry invented<lb />at the kitchen table with his head'in his hands. When his father arrived,<lb />Because Lewis Howard Latimer, a Black man, invented the filament within<lb /><lb />d be like if there were no Black people In the world. Not to mention if he<lb />were ever sick and needed blood. Charles Drew, a Black scientist, found a way to preserve and store blood which led to his<lb /><lb />starting the'world Ts first blood bank. And what if a family Member had to have surgery. This would not have been possible<lb />without Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a Black doctor, who performed the first open heart surgery. So if you ever wonder, like Theo,<lb /><lb />where we would be without Blacks? Well, it Ts pretty plain tg see, we could very well still be in the dark!!! _<lb /><lb />x<lb />=<lb /><lb />Black Hi:<lb /></p>

The very fact that it was buried in the<lb />670 page, and no one debated it before it was passed, and then<lb />no one knew it was in the law until literally nine months<lb />after the president signed it, and three months after it<lb />actually took effect, means that powers that be knew it was a<lb />political hot potato from the start. |<lb /><lb />But the most troubling part of this has been whether<lb />parents and students have been duly notified by the schools.<lb /><lb />Shoving the announcement in a multi-paged handbook,<lb />making it an insignificant notice among many that gets sent<lb />home with the report card, or worse yet, assuming that<lb />everybody's going to find out one way or the other, is not<lb />exactly what one has in mind when it comes to something<lb />this important.<lb /><lb />' There are issues of student privacy and the government<lb />(of which the military is a significant part) having undue<lb />access to a child's personal information.<lb /><lb />: There is also the issue of a school system's right, indeed<lb />duty, to protect the privacy of its students.<lb /><lb />| The problem is our public schools can't exist with federal<lb />money, and as long as they accept one dollar from Uncle<lb /> Sam, they have to dance to his tune.<lb /><lb />' Parents and students need to be proactive about this now.<lb /><lb />If you want the military to have access to your child's<lb />personal information for the expressed purpose (so they say)<lb />of military recruitment, then do nothing. That's your right,<lb />and no one should judge you for it.<lb /><lb />But if you have real concerns about that fact that you<lb />knew nothing about this before you read our story and<lb />editorial, then you need to contact the principal's office of<lb />your junior or seniot Ts high school, and find out what you<lb />need to know in order to make an informed decision.<lb /><lb />And if you've already made up your mind, based on what<lb />you've read, that you do not want your child's info released<lb />by the school, then immediately write a letter to that effect to<lb />the principal today. :<lb /><lb />An informed community is an empowered community,<lb />and you have the right to be informed.<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />rod<lb /><lb />: 1 ae ied tllibalnitl. diet tcaaial dite T bate cam Yaak Oe<lb />es ny -<lb /><lb />Your Voice<lb /><lb />= cata<lb /><lb />Officials need to establish<lb /><lb />| board to revitalize<lb />|| depressed areas<lb /><lb />- Thearticle in the local daily paper.<lb /><lb />|| recently, about the establishment |<lb /><lb />of three boards and commissions for<lb />New Hanover County encouraged<lb />me to write this letter.<lb /><lb />I am appalled by the fact that<lb />they did not include an African<lb />American community commission<lb />to enhance Castle Street and<lb />Fourth Street. These are two vital<lb />areas in the African American<lb />community that could be of utmost<lb />importance to the residents of<lb />Wilmington.<lb /><lb />Castle Street, as it is now, is<lb /><lb />ladies of the night. This street could<lb /><lb />cultural, and entertainment area.<lb />It is dark and desolate, has young<lb />people hanging on corners and<lb />lurking in dark places, has boarded<lb />up buildings, buildings that should<lb />be either torn down or renovated,<lb />and a few stores that close before dark.<lb />There is a town hall that could be<lb /><lb /> used for exhibits, conferences,<lb /><lb />children activities, adult seminars<lb />conducted by prominent speakers,<lb />and be the cultural center of the<lb />area. Fourth Street has the same<lb />personification. <lb /><lb />My suggestion is for the officials<lb />to establish such a board that<lb />could help revitalize these areas,<lb />help the African American small<lb />businessman get established and<lb /><lb />Stay in business, renovate the area,<lb /><lb />brighten it up, and make it tasteful<lb />and inviting to the general public.<lb />The African American business<lb />people need assistance from the<lb />City, County, and the State to<lb />acccmplish such a task. Pick your choice, There<lb />are enough reasons to go around.<lb />The main point is that the Bush<lb />Administration has decided that<lb />they want Iraq to be ruled by the<lb />U.S. Military instead of Saddam<lb />Hussein.<lb /><lb />I personally believe that war is<lb />inevitable now. There's no retreat<lb />route for the troops already,<lb />amassed on Iraq's borders. The<lb /><lb />political embarrassment and lost<lb /><lb />Picking Our Forei<lb /><lb />operation of a coward Ts vanity<lb />and ego.<lb /><lb />Oh! it must have been some<lb /><lb /> feeling of vile exhilaration for the<lb /><lb />vicious slave hunter to watch<lb /><lb />proud African men of royal<lb /><lb />descent broken down, beaten, and<lb />tortured to the rhythm of constant<lb />pain systematically inflicted.<lb /><lb />BUT, THE KIDNAPPED<lb />AFRICAN WOULD NOT DIE!<lb /><lb />Beautiful African women were<lb />kidnapped from the .bosom of<lb />Mother Africa - torn from her<lb />magnificent breasts and taken<lb />across an ocean of tears to a<lb />hostile land which gave her no<lb />respect or praise. ~<lb /><lb />In the new world, the Kidnapped<lb />African was whipped, tortured,<lb />and mutilated into submission or<lb />death. They who survived this<lb />cruel destruction of body, mind<lb />and spirit became the slaves of<lb />America. This dehumanizing<lb />process transformed the Kidnapped<lb />African into human property to<lb />be possessed and used at the<lb />whims and fancies of a heartless<lb />master.<lb /><lb />BUT, THE KIDNAPPED<lb />AFRICAN WOULD NOT DIE!<lb /><lb />of military: confidence are too<lb />much for this administration to<lb />bear: They rather fight an unjust war<lb />and waste hundreds of thousands<lb />of lives than switch plans.<lb /><lb />This Administration would<lb />have us believe that there are only<lb />two options: (1) Attach and<lb />conquer Iraq or (2) be militarily<lb />defeated by her in the near future.<lb />The problem with this logic is<lb />that it could apply to every nation<lb /><lb />on the planet. Mexico could one<lb /><lb />day rise up and attack us with<lb />Weapons not yet developed because<lb />She doesn't like our current<lb />immigration policy, Egypt, Jordan,<lb />Syria, Libya, Lebanon or even a<lb />not yet created Palestine could be<lb />a potential enemy using this<lb />administration's logic. And what<lb />about France, Germany, Russia<lb />and China? Certainly a couple of<lb />these guys might get the nerve to<lb />jump us at some point. Three of<lb /><lb />Kidnapped African into the<lb />American slave had as its intent<lb />the total destruction of the<lb />African mind, consciousness, and<lb />spirit. Penetrating every level of<lb />existence, the vicious slave<lb />master attempted to destroy all<lb />that made the Kidnapped African<lb />human.<lb /><lb />The male was valued for the<lb />strength of his back and the<lb />power of his seed, The female was<lb />valued for her fertile womb and<lb />the lustful pleasures which could<lb />be taken at will. The family was<lb />destroyed by separating the men,<lb />women and children.<lb /><lb />BUT, THE KIDNAPPED<lb />AFRICAN WOULD NOT DIE!<lb /><lb />Then, the final indignity was<lb />inflicted upon the Kidnapped<lb />African. Rewriting this bloody<lb />saga of captivity and affliction,<lb />the ruthless slave master<lb />attempted to close the eyes and<lb />minds of his human property to<lb />the past and land from which<lb />they had been stolen in the night -<lb />hiding forever the greatest wrong<lb />ever committed by one people<lb />against another.<lb /><lb />The pain and horror of the<lb />captivity were replaced by endless<lb /><lb />The transformation of the s of silence and insincere<lb />Leesan comed OBeS_<lb />JONES STREET " BY VAL ATKINSON<lb /><lb /> deep<lb /><lb />rn as<lb /><lb />apologies. Germany might get a<lb />leader that's a little soft on the<lb />Neo-Nazis and France... well how<lb />can you trust a bunch of wine<lb />drinkers who won't send their<lb />troop to die for the administration's<lb />war in Baghdad?<lb /><lb />The truth of the matter is that<lb />the coin that was chosen by the<lb />Bush Administration (kill Saddam<lb />on one side and the death of<lb />America on the other) wasn't the<lb />only coin on the table. There<lb />were and still are other coins on<lb />the table that have two other sides<lb />that haven't even been considered<lb />yet. What about dealing with the<lb />Saudi's regarding their citizens<lb /><lb />1a<lb />attacking the twin towers and the<lb />pentagon? What about dealing<lb />fairly with the Israeli / Palestinian<lb />problem? What about a real<lb />introspective look at American<lb />foreign policy, especially our<lb />Middle Eastern foreign policy?<lb />And another thing - when we cry<lb />out that Iraq is not living up to UN.<lb />Resolution X or U.N. Resolution Y,<lb />we ought to be mindful that there<lb />are a couple of Resolutions that.<lb />the Allies (U.S.A., UK and Israel)<lb />haven't lived up to either. What<lb />about U.N. Resolution 242 that<lb />requires Israel to withdraw from<lb />the West Bank and the Gaza<lb />Strip? There has been no real<lb />movement on that Resolution at<lb />all. I guess it's like Picking two<lb />sided coins from the table; maybe<lb />we get to pick and choose which<lb />Resolutions we adhere to as well.<lb />Contact Val at:<lb />JonesStreet@nc. rrcom<lb /></p>
