It is a dream<lb />shared by many Americans and most cer-<lb />tainly the majority of African Americans.<lb />Martin Ts dream is slowly but surely be-<lb />coming a reality. Black men and women<lb />have reached socioeconomic levels and<lb />positions that are unparalleled in Ameri-<lb />can history. While there is still much<lb />progress to be made there is undeniable<lb />evidence that much progress has been and<lb />is being made. Also regrettably, the skin color of<lb />too many of those being judged by those<lb />black robe-wearing men and women is<lb />black.<lb /><lb />Often we exaggerate when we talk of the<lb />Positives of times past. Little Black children were more<lb />likely to be killed by white, sick, cowardly.<lb />and racist church bombers than by Black,<lb />sick and cowardly drive-by shooters. There<lb />were more young southern Black men sit-<lb />ting-in at lunch counters peacefully de-<lb />manding and eventually obtaining equal<lb />rights than there were participating in vio-<lb /><lb />lent street-gangs.<lb /><lb />The content of the character of too many<lb />of us whose skin color is the same as Mar-<lb />tin fought so hard for is something Martin<lb />could not have dreamed of. He could not<lb />have dreamed that in a country where op-<lb />portunity is now so great that there are so<lb />many of those whose character ore that<lb />great opportunity. America, though not per-<lb />fect, has become a better place because men<lb /><lb />like Martin dared to dream. What is question-<lb />able, however, is the validity of the claim of<lb />Afro-American Police Association president<lb /> oTyrone Currie that the examination is bi-<lb /> ased because it places too much weight on<lb />the written portion of the examination.<lb /><lb />- The problem we have with the bias claim<lb />«is simple. What<lb />seems to make more sense by way of expla-<lb />nation is that 66 White patrolmen didn Tt<lb />meet the standard and 188 Blacks didn Tt<lb />meet that same standard.<lb /><lb />We do not presume to be able to tell law<lb />enforcement officials how promotional ex-<lb />aminations should be structured. <lb />Te ca a,<lb /><lb />January 17 - 24, 2003 "<lb /><lb />MAKE A COMMITMENT IN 2003<lb />Commit Yourself To The Light<lb /><lb />Lifeline: if | tic ?,?<lb />sling: Raification o<lb /><lb />Life is difficult. At times it Ts hard to know what to believe.<lb />- But God has not left us without light. Even in the darkness of<lb />natural disasters, devastating diseases, and heartbreaking injus-<lb />| tices, God has placed within our hearts the knowledge of good<lb />and evil. Deep down inside, we sense our responsibility to<lb />choose to do right.<lb />In-this awareness God now invites us to respond. to the light<lb />He has given us and to fallow through in a life of love, obedi-<lb />ence, and trust. .<lb /><lb />Commit Yourself To Love<lb /><lb />To be the kind of Christians who will experience God Ts good-<lb /><lb />ness and the reality of His salvation, we must commit ourselves to a life marked with genuine<lb /><lb />love-love for God and love for others. Jesus summarized the demands of the Old Testament law:<lb /><lb />You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with<lb />all your mind.... You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Mt. 22:37,39). °<lb /><lb />Commit Yourself To Obedience<lb /><lb />A commitment to obedience is almost automatic for a believer who is commited to love God<lb />and others. It means that we will look to the Scriptures for guidance, and that we will strive to<lb />obey every command.<lb /><lb />People who love and obey the Lord will be led to the Joyous certainty: oIf anyone love Me, he<lb /><lb />will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home<lb /><lb />with him ? (Jn. 14:23).<lb />° Commit Yourself To Trust<lb /><lb />Christians are not exempt from pain and grief. Their loved ones die in car accidents just as<lb />others do. They get cancer. When a natural disaster like an earthquake strikes, it hits believers<lb />as well as unbelievers. God does not make us His cosmic pets when we believe in Him. If he<lb />did, we could become complacent and proud. It would lead people to become Christians for the<lb />earthly benefits it brings. When we trust God we will find that we are strongest spiritually<lb />when we are the weakest physically. _<lb /><lb />Let us commit ourselves to trust God. If we do, we will find His grace adequate to give us<lb />victory over the worst that life can throw our way. There are no easy answers. But we can<lb />commit ourselves to Christ and to a love-filled, obedient, and trusting way of life. And when we<lb /><lb />do, we can experience the truth of 1 John 5:4, oThis is the victory that has overcome the world--<lb /><lb />-our faith. ?<lb /><lb />o<lb /><lb />R&B/Hip-Hop 10. I love school and.<lb /><lb />I love to learn new things.<lb />My favorite subject is<lb />English. I love English<lb />because, first of all, I like to<lb />read, so English gives me<lb />that opportunity second, it is<lb />the only required class that<lb />lets you write expressively,<lb />which I love to do as well,<lb />[ thank all my English<lb /><lb />teachers who have taught -<lb />me something. They al |<lb /><lb />have instilled some things<lb />into my life that I will never<lb />forget. To name a few: Ms.<lb />Veronica Burch of Stokes<lb />Elementary, Mrs. Sylvia<lb />Barnhill, Mrs. Rebecca<lb />Flowers, Mr. Ricardo<lb />Morgan, and my last year Ts<lb />English teacher, Mrs. Jackie<lb />Lee, all fron: North Pitt<lb />High School.<lb /><lb />I live with my mother, who<lb />has been sick most of my<lb />life, but I thank God that<lb />she is still with me. For<lb /><lb />those who do not know my<lb />mother, she is Evangelist<lb />Marie Goings and she is still<lb />my motivator and mentor<lb />when needed. The thing. is,<lb />she has taken care of me and<lb />allowed me to get into<lb />programs that have required<lb />lots of expenses. She keeps<lb />encouraging me, even when<lb />she is going through, and<lb />She does all of this as.a<lb />single mother. So, yes, a<lb />single mom can take care of<lb />her children by herself. She<lb />has even taken in a couple of<lb />foster children and has de-<lb />feated the devil every time<lb />he has tried to take her life,<lb />I am proud of my mother.<lb />She is a survivor.<lb /><lb />I love God and, I love the<lb />way He deals with me.<lb />Some people may not see it,<lb />but who is man to judge me?<lb />God has blessed me and He<lb />keeps making a way for me.<lb />He keeps opening and shut-<lb />ting doors for me. Sometimes |<lb />ask God why ¥ go through<lb />the things I do, and, before<lb />long, I'll get an answer<lb />through His word, or<lb /><lb />through my mother, who is a-<lb /><lb />beautiful woman of God.<lb />There Ts one testimony that<lb />my mother and | can share<lb />together. Eighteen years<lb />ago, I could have lost my<lb />mother. Before my birth, my<lb />mother was told by doctors<lb /><lb />. She found out that she was<lb /><lb />that she could not have any "<lb />children: My mother did not<lb />give up; she was reading the<lb /><lb />| James D. If He could do<lb />it for Hannah, He could do it<lb />for her. A few months later,<lb /><lb />pregnant with me. The<lb />devil had the doctors tell my<lb />mother that because of her<lb />age, | might be born de-<lb />formed and that she should ff «<lb />abort me. My mother re-<lb />fused to abort me and here |<lb />am. Also, while giving birth<lb />to me, she started losing a<lb />lot of blood, but she told<lb />God that she had never held<lb />me and not to take her right<lb />then, because she wanted to<lb />hold me and watch me grow<lb />up. She kept her promise to<lb />God and raised me up in the<lb />church. I wanted to give<lb />that testimony because if my<lb />mother had been in the<lb />world she could have<lb />aborted me so that she<lb />would live and would not<lb />have known the works that |<lb />have done and have yet to<lb />do. <lb />- , January 17 - 24, 2003<lb /><lb /> Apostle George Hawkins<lb /><lb />. _]Who Shall Separate Us<lb />- From The Love Of Christ?<lb /><lb />Greetings:<lb /><lb />As we take a good look at the<lb />.world around us today, I Tm<lb />. prompt to ask two questions that<lb />_ you, as a Christian, have heard<lb /> before. Romans 8:35 oWho<lb /> oshall separate us from the love of<lb />Christ? shall tribulation, or<lb />distress, or persecution, or fam-<lb />ine, or nakedness, or peril, or<lb />sword? ? These are perhaps the<lb />most important questions you<lb />will ever be asked as a Christian<lb />because it has to do with the<lb /><lb />possibility or the impossibility of<lb /><lb />you ever being lost under any<lb />circumstances. The destiny of<lb />one Ts soul may be determined by<lb />the way these questions are<lb />answered, for the way they are<lb />answered may determine the<lb />way some will live.<lb /><lb />Let Ts break the questions down<lb />so that we will be able to<lb />understand them. The first<lb />phrase othe love of Christ ?<lb />carries two meanings. (1)<lb />Christ Ts love for man, John 3:16<lb /> oFor God so loved the world that<lb />he gave his only begotten Son,<lb />that whosoever believeth in him<lb />should not perish, but have<lb /><lb />everlasting life. ? You see the<lb />truth of the matter is Christ died<lb />for us all but Christ Ts love for<lb />man is not proof of man Ts<lb />Salvation. (2) This phrase<lb />evidently means man Ts love for<lb />Christ, for no one would think<lb />that T the rigorous things men-<lb /><lb />tioned in the second question<lb /><lb />would keep Christ from loving<lb />us;. some might think that. the<lb />hardship we endure for Christ<lb />might cause our love for Him to<lb />cease.<lb />The second question asks us<lb />about tribulation, or distress, or<lb />persecution, or famine, or naked-<lb />ness, or peril, or sword, all of<lb />which are external powers that<lb />could cause a person to lose<lb />hope and destroy their love for<lb />Christ. Romans '8:35-39 oWho<lb />shall separate us from the love of<lb />suse shall tribulation, or<lb />istress, or persecution, or fam-<lb />ine, or nakedness, or veal<lb />sword? As it is written, For thy<lb /><lb />Sake we are killed all the day<lb /><lb />long; we are accounted as shee<lb /><lb />for the slaughter. Nay, in all<lb />these things we are more than<lb />conquerors through him that<lb />loved us. For I am persuaded,<lb />that neither. death, nor life, nor<lb />angels, nor principalities, nor<lb />powers, nor things present, nor<lb />things to come, not height, nor<lb />depth, nor any other creature,<lb />shall be able to separate us from<lb />the love of God, which is in<lb />Christ Jesus our Lord. ? It is to<lb />be observed that the evils men-<lb />tioned in this passage are things<lb />that strike at man from without.<lb /><lb />Nothing is said as to how an<lb /><lb />inward, corrupting influence<lb />might affect man Ts love. No<lb />persecutions or other outward<lb />powers can force one to cease<lb />loving God. ONLY the condi-<lb />tions of man Ts own heart can<lb /><lb />REFLECTIONS<lb /><lb />cause him to quit loving the<lb />Lord. If he quits, he does it<lb />because of sin, an inward influ- -<lb />ence, and not because of any<lb />outward force or power.<lb /><lb />Whenever one is robbed of love /<lb /><lb />for God, itis always an inside<lb />job. Jesus stated in Matthew<lb />24:12 oAnd because iniquity<lb />shall abound, the love of many<lb />shall wax cold. ? WHAT<lb />CAUSED IT? Iniquity! And<lb />that-is an inside job.<lb /><lb />So again, I would like to ask you<lb />this question on a personal level:<lb /><lb /> oWho shall separate you from .<lb /><lb />the love of Christ? I know that .<lb /><lb />this country is getting ready to<lb /><lb />go through like it never has<lb />before, but that doesn Tt give you<lb />as a Christian an excuse to stop<lb />loving Jesus Christ, the hope of<lb />glory. _ You just -stand.<lb />Remember this is how to<lb />STAND -- Ephesians 6:13-18 --<lb /> oWherefore take unto you the<lb />whole armour of God, that ye<lb />may be able to withstand in the<lb />evil day, and having done all, to<lb />stand. Stand therefore, having<lb />your loins girt about with truth,<lb />and having on the breastplate of<lb />righteousness; And your feet<lb />shod with the preparation of the<lb />gospel of peace; Above all,<lb />taking the shield of faith where-<lb />with ye shall be able to quench<lb />all the fiery darts of the wicked.<lb />And take the helmet of salvation,<lb />and sword of the Spirit, which is<lb />the word of God: Praying always<lb />with all prayer and supplication<lb />in the Spirit, and watching<lb />thereunto with all perseverance<lb />and supplication for all saints . .<lb />. ? Until the next time, stay in<lb />prayer for the peace of<lb />Jerusalem, and that the officials<lb />in high places will make the<lb />correct decisions concerning this<lb />country.<lb /><lb />_ Subscribe To The<lb />Minority Voice Newspaper<lb /><lb />Martin County<lb />Community Action, Inc.<lb />Proudly Celebrates<lb /><lb />Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<lb /><lb />Martin County Community Action, Inc.<lb />(Serving Beaufort, Martin & Pitt Counties)<lb /><lb />ALSO JOIN YOU IN CELEBRATING BLACK ASTOY WONTH<lb />Reginald Speight<lb /><lb />Executive Director<lb /><lb />RLSpeight@aol.com<lb /><lb />Pager: (252) 353-9272<lb /><lb />Tel: (252) 792-7111<lb />Fax: (252) 792-1248<lb /><lb />Pg il<lb /><lb />mecloie sepusenaon Cuba Gooding, Jr. (right) poses with<lb />motemaNrRopuctions Carl Brashear, whose inspirational life<lb />Story is the basis of MEN of HONOR.<lb /><lb />East Carolina University's<lb /><lb />African American Firsts ~*~<lb />February 1, 2003 6:30 pm<lb /><lb />a= *<lb /><lb />Murphy Center (Athletic Complex)<lb /><lb />The speaker, Carl Brashear, became the first African American Master Diver despite a<lb />crippling injury from which he became an amputee. The self-<lb />improvement platform is key, he<lb />said, because personal responsibil-<lb />ity is more than just a conservative<lb />slogan, but a reality.<lb /><lb /> oWe as black people have been<lb />robbed, but we as black people have<lb />to take the responsibility to do what<lb />it is that we need done, ? he added.<lb />He applauded the street activists<lb />for standing up, exhibiting leader-<lb />ship, and making positive things<lb />happen for their community.<lb /><lb />MEDSTATES<lb /><lb />Deals i,<lb /><lb />ere,<lb /><lb />CALL TOLL FREE 1-800-473-1183<lb /><lb />WE GET YOU APPROVED WITH NO MONEY DOWN<lb /><lb />WE ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU GET THE jmamge<lb />LOWEST MONTHLY CAR PAYMENT<lb /><lb />WE GIVE CASH BACK<lb />CREDIT<lb /><lb />YOUR 1°" PAYMENT IS NOT DUE TILL.<lb /><lb />improve the<lb />you won't<lb /><lb />Loaded with their study manu-<lb />als, a desire to improve life Ts qual-<lb />ity, and a lot of heart, the peace-<lb />makers and an initial study circle of<lb />ten young men, all former gang<lb /><lb />_ Their necessity and appeal is<lb />evident, because if you don't begin to<lb />quality of yourself, then<lb />be able to do anything for<lb />or with anyone else.<lb /><lb /> "Stan Muhammad<lb /><lb />members themselves, tackled youth<lb />probation, re-gentrification, afford-<lb />able housing for seniors, and prison<lb />inmate issues, for starters.<lb /><lb />It recently stifled an unjust gang<lb />injunction which found police un-<lb />justly photographing and tagging<lb /><lb />- innocent black and brown youth as<lb />. gang members, and entering them<lb />_ into police gang databases. Its com-<lb /><lb />munity mass mobilization efforts<lb />and an all men Ts meeting on solving<lb />the matter enabled them.to remove<lb />some names off the databases,<lb />Muhammad stated.<lb /><lb /> oThis is where I believe the sudy<lb />guides T community development<lb />aspect hits home for many people,<lb />because in addition to fighting the<lb />gang injunction, we were able to<lb />retain Section 8 (low income hous-<lb />ing) for needy families, and form a<lb />tenant action committee, ? he added.<lb /><lb />The group, he continued, has also<lb />contracted with the L.A. They<lb />teach and train the students in life-<lb />management skills and self-im-<lb />provement.<lb /><lb />Despite positive results from<lb />their efforts, the group said it faces<lb />daily challenges from an element<lb />that is working against the unifica-<lb />tion of the community and cease<lb />violence treaties sparked by gang<lb />truces years earlier.<lb /><lb />The people of Venice continue<lb />to embrace the self-help program<lb /><lb />We Will Pay Your DOWN-P<lb /><lb />Local Gang Interventionists Tout Self<lb /><lb />which redirects and uplifts young<lb />gang members and the general com-<lb />munity, especially now as black men<lb />throughout L.A. The Self-Improvement<lb />course provides 4 way for brothers<lb />and sisters who want to become<lb />involved in their communities, but<lb />do not know how to do so, whether<lb />it lies behind the walls or not. .<lb /><lb />Venice 2000's long term goal.<lb /><lb />regarding inmates is to link them<lb />together toward ultimate freedom.<lb />The immediate goal is get them on<lb />the road to self-improvement via<lb />the study guides, because they are<lb />not just for Muslims, they are for<lb />everyone, he said-<lb /><lb />Currently, the street activists are<lb />negotiating with about eight prison<lb /><lb />institutions, including Pelican Bay<lb /> T State Prison, New and Old Folsom<lb /><lb />Prisons, Soledad Prison, and Sali-<lb />nas Valley State Prison, to supply<lb />Study guide materials, books, and<lb /><lb />other tools to first foster the inmate Ts .<lb /><lb />commitment to self-improvement,<lb />with a future aim of developing<lb />model citizens for resettlement on<lb /><lb />8<lb /><lb />Improvement<lb /><lb />the homeland, Muhammad contin-<lb />ued. .<lb />Venice 2000's Study Guides<lb />adaptation warrants numerous ben- _<lb />efits to particularly the wives and<lb />mothers of the men who undertake<lb />the study, however, the program<lb />does not boast a male-only founda-<lb />tion. It is simply a vehicle to pro-<lb />mote the masterful study guides,<lb />and women are encouraged to con-<lb />tribute, Muhammad informed.<lb /> oTheir work is very important,<lb />particularly because these children<lb />that we deal with in Venice are<lb />children that we know, and it Ts im-<lb />portant that we go out there and<lb />turn some lives around ... their be-<lb />ing black men makes it more posi-<lb />tive, and they bring a lot of positive<lb />things within and without the com-<lb />munity, ? stated community activ-<lb />ist, Sheila Smith.<lb /><lb />(For more information on Venice<lb />2000's outreach programs and The<lb />Self Improvefnent Stfily Guides,<lb />write to j , Or<lb />P.O.
