          <lb />Urban Perspective: Black<lb />Leadership Development Ts<lb />Checkered Past<lb /><lb />By Larry Aubry, Los Angeles<lb />Sentinel<lb /><lb />Author Adolph Reed, Jr. Ts<lb />book The Jug and its Contents:<lb />A Perspective on Black Political<lb />Development raises perennially<lb />provocative questions about<lb />black leadership and the devolv-<lb />ing state of the oblack commu-<lb />nity. ? Reed also offers a few<lb />suggestions for changing dys-<lb />functional historical leadership<lb />imperatives.<lb /><lb />Adolph Reed Jr. Ts basic ar-<lb />gument is that the idea that there<lb />is a cohesive black collectivity or<lb />identity is a myth. He attempts<lb />to show why this myth was<lb />necessary after the Civil War<lb />(ending the era of Jim Crow) in<lb />order to present a semblance of<lb />unity.<lb /><lb />Black leadership, including<lb />the Dubois T Talented Tenth,<lb />could then claim to represent this<lb /> ounified ? community. It was the<lb />black leadership class that de-<lb />fined the specific interests of the<lb /> oblack community. ?<lb /><lb />Blacks were treated by oth-<lb />ers as an undifferentiated whole<lb />with no divisions or differences<lb />of opinions on significant issues.<lb />Working within the narrow op-<lb />portunities provided by the seg-<lb />regation era, black leaders<lb />became omiddle-men ? (brokers)<lb />between blacks and the white<lb />power structure.<lb /><lb />Of course, there were prob-<lb />lems with this arrangement.<lb />These included the fact that<lb />many black leaders were oputa-<lb />tive ? leaders (supposed leaders).<lb />They named themselves leaders<lb /><lb />or were assumed to be so by the<lb />white community.<lb /><lb />Since blacks were presumed<lb />to speak with one voice no one<lb />asked who benefited from the<lb />activities of this putative leader-<lb />ship. (This phenomenon contin-<lb />ues today). In fact, most of the<lb />benefits were going to the bour-<lb />geois (middle-class) sectors from<lb />which the leaders came.<lb /><lb />Any effort to raise questions<lb />or to articulate a different point<lb />of view from that of the black<lb />leadership elite was attacked as<lb /> ocreating disunity. ? Those who<lb />questioned the alleged collective<lb />voice among blacks were defined<lb />as oinauthentic. ? Reed con-<lb />cludes that the myth of a single<lb />black collectivity is a social<lb />construction of reality put to-<lb />gether from cultural fragments<lb />and remnants of black adapta-<lb />tions from the era of slavery to<lb />the early period of Jim Crow.<lb /><lb />These two myths --that<lb />blacks constitute a single collec-<lb />tive identity and the myth of<lb />black authenticity -- have pre-<lb />vented the development of a<lb /><lb />differentiated politics -- a politics<lb />based on real differences and<lb />interests within the black com-<lb />munity.<lb /><lb />Reed attacks Black Power<lb />ideology as abstract, idealistic<lb />and not connected to the real<lb />politics of black people because<lb />it dismissed the reality of the<lb />politics blacks practiced and<lb />replaced it with a utopian<lb />scheme. The emphasis on self-<lb />help is conservative and bour-<lb />geois because self-help ideolo-<lb />gies do not challenge the existing<lb />social system and also place the<lb />burden for change on the very<lb />victims of the system.<lb /><lb />Reed suggests it is ironic<lb />that what is needed is a form of<lb /> ointerest group liberalism ? in<lb />what passes for the ounified<lb />black community. ? Interest<lb />group liberalism assumes that<lb />there are divergent and often<lb />conflicting interests within any<lb />large group. The denial of these<lb />differences has allowed self-<lb />proclaimed leaders, often made<lb />by the media to define the<lb />interests of blacks and to be<lb />unchallenged in doing so.<lb /><lb />A differentiated black collec-<lb />tivity will lead to coalitions with<lb />other collectivities; to leadership<lb />that is accountable to specific<lb />black constituencies; to real de-<lb />mocracy within what is called<lb />the black community. Blacks are<lb />as diverse as everyone else and<lb />the denial of that simple fact has<lb />benefited mostly the black bour-<lb />geoisie and its benefactors out-<lb />side of the oblack community. ?<lb /><lb />The author links develop-<lb />ments in the capitalistic mode of<lb />production and the homogenizing<lb />effects of mass culture to both the<lb />integrationist focus of the civil<lb /><lb />rights movement and to the black<lb />power movement.<lb /><lb />Essentially, he argues, that<lb />both the integrationist phase of<lb />the movement and black power<lb />served the interests of capitalism.<lb />Moreover, both integration and<lb />black power have aided in the<lb />reconstitution of domination, not<lb />only of blacks, but also over all<lb />of society.<lb /><lb />Reed concludes there is no<lb />real opposition to the administra-<lb />tive apparatus (government and<lb />corporations) that serve capital-<lb />ism. This is due, in part, to the<lb />failure of the opposition and not<lb />merely to systemic repression.<lb /><lb />Since the early 1970s, the<lb />black movement has been paci-<lb />fied and depoliticized so that true<lb />emancipation seems impossible<lb />to some. Racial segregation was<lb />dismantled, but black employ-<lb />ment, median income, availabil-<lb />ity of housing and life expectancy<lb />did not improve from 1964<lb />through the early 1990s. The<lb />middle-class tends to generalize<lb />its gains as if they were the gains<lb />of the black community because<lb /><lb />Mateo The Black Communit<lb /><lb />its interests and power rests on a<lb />monolithic conception of black<lb />life.<lb /><lb />Egalitarianism and social ra-<lb />tionality appealed to the civil<lb />rights movement and to capital-<lb />ism. It was egalitarianism that<lb />raised no questions about capi-<lb />talism. It stressed the immorality<lb />of segregation and how segrega-<lb />tion was an obstacle to the<lb />market and to economic progress.<lb /><lb />The end of segregation<lb />opened up avenues for new forms<lb />of domination over blacks. In<lb />addition, the radical faction of<lb />the black movement did not<lb />critique the alliance of the black<lb />elite with corporate liberalism.<lb />The black power movement Ts<lb />assumption that there was a<lb />black political interest repre-<lb />sented by community leaders<lb />strengthened those leaders --the<lb />black elite.<lb /><lb />The decline of serious black<lb />opposition to the status quo was<lb />due in part to an ideology that fit<lb />into mainstream American ideol-<lb />ogy. The black opposition was<lb />integrated into the system in a<lb />way that strengthened the system<lb />rather than challenged it.<lb /><lb />A new mode of domination<lb />developed that domesticated<lb />negativity by creating places<lb />where these ideas could be<lb />expressed (ethnic studies pro-<lb />grams, cultural centers, etc.). In<lb />this way, opposition was paci-<lb />fied. Reed cites these groups as<lb />examples of oartificial negativ-<lb />ity, ? by which he means groups<lb />that are critical but in ways that<lb />fail to challenge the system. For<lb />example the mass culture indus-<lb />try turned the black movement<lb />into a media event complete with<lb />props. Opposition became a<lb /><lb />spectacle.<lb /><lb />Reed, however, does not<lb />think opposition is impossible.<lb />He suggests that buying off<lb />groups only works as long as the<lb />number of such groups is limited.<lb />But more and more, ostatus<lb />groups ? -- women, handicapped,<lb />other minorities -- are competing<lb />for shrinking opportunities valu-<lb />able in the administrative /<lb />government distribution _privi-<lb />lege.<lb /><lb />Among Reed Ts broad sug-<lb />gestion for remedying the situa-<lb />tion are: Break the black elite Ts<lb />control over ideas in the black<lb />community; critique the pro-<lb />grams of the black elite in order<lb />to o... transcend the official black<lb />posture of quiet acceptance of<lb />any initiative that includes af-<lb />firmative action component; ?<lb />recognize diverse interests in the<lb />black community.<lb /><lb />Political liberalism is<lb />the first step to break the<lb />black elite Ts monolithic con-<lb />trol. There is a need for a<lb />critical, democratic black po-<lb />litical culture.<lb /><lb />M'VOICE ARCHIVES... Pictured above is NC Lobby Brother<lb />Greenville Ed Carter, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jr.. The<lb />desperate rush for death penal-<lb />ties is unnerving critics of<lb />capital punishment, who fear<lb />the sniper case is beginning to<lb />resemble a ohanging. ?<lb /><lb /> oSwift justice is justice in<lb />this case, ? He was not<lb />known to be violent. ?<lb /><lb />Despite the unknowns,<lb />Virginia authorities believe<lb />they can ensure the death pen-<lb />alty. Prosecutors in Spotsy-<lb />Ivania, Hanover and Prince<lb />William counties, where the<lb />crimes were committed, have<lb />explored a new Virginia law<lb />that will the death<lb /><lb />. The new law, trig-<lb />gered by the 9-11 terrorist at-<lb />tacks, makes the otriggerman<lb />rule ? obsolete under certain<lb />circumstances, allowing prose-<lb />cution of suspects without<lb />proof of who fired fatal shots.<lb />This new anti-terrorism law<lb />only requires proof that<lb />Muhammad and Malvo carried<lb />out the crimes to intimidate the<lb /><lb />public or influence the govern-<lb />ment<lb /><lb /> oWhat makes it terrorism<lb />is the extortion, the widespread<lb />nature of it and the fact that<lb /><lb />ie were put in terrible<lb /><lb />. ? said William<lb />Assistant Commonwealth's<lb />A Jarnes A. Willett.<lb /> oWith the new statute, there<lb />won't be a need to show<lb /><lb />which one was the triggerman.<lb />We T ll all be walking on new<lb />ground. ?<lb /><lb />Opponents believe the rush<lb />to ensure execution is politi-<lb />cally and racially motivated, a<lb />mixture that may prove deadly<lb />for the two defendants.<lb /><lb /> oPolitics get in the way, ?<lb />said Elliott, oespecially when<lb />it involves people of color. ?<lb />Elliott said he was not sur-<lb />prised at the federal govern-<lb />ment Ts involvement.<lb /><lb /> oWe were not surprised,<lb />but we were disappointed, ? he<lb />said. oNo one loves the death<lb />penalty more than Attorney<lb />General [John] Ashcroft. ?<lb /><lb />Virginia prosecutors are<lb />optimistic about the outcome<lb />of a trial held in their jurisdic-<lb />tion. Another factor that<lb />makes prosecution in Virginia<lb />more appealing is the fact that<lb />neither Maryland nor federal<lb />law permits the execution of<lb />juveniles. But prosecutors<lb />seem undaunted by Malvo Ts<lb /><lb />e.<lb /> oChildren are not minia-<lb />ture adults, ? said Elliott.<lb /><lb /> oThey don Tt act like adults and<lb />they don Tt think like adults. ?<lb />Published reports describe<lb />Malvo as so controlled by<lb />Muhammad that he would not<lb />even eat a sandwich unless he<lb />had his approval.<lb /><lb /> oIt is unseemly for them to<lb />be searching around for a state<lb />where it is OK for them to<lb />execute children, ? said Dr.<lb />William Schulz, executive di-<lb />rector of Amnesty International<lb />USA. oThat is not the behav-<lb />ior of a civilized country. ?<lb /><lb />The United States and Iran<lb />are the only two countries that<lb />continue to execute juveniles.<lb /><lb /> oThey are thinking how<lb />quickly can execute these<lb /><lb />le so that it will just go<lb />away, ? said Dieter, oThat is<lb />not what the<lb /><lb />RA0Lc -<lb /><lb />Azeaqtl aa<lb /></p>

A total of 33 arrests for<lb />prostitution have been made this year, at<lb />Casey Ts motel alone and residents of the<lb />area Say at least a thousand could be made<lb />if the law was rigidly enforced.<lb /><lb />On last Tuesday night, law enforcement<lb />officers also arrested five people for drug<lb /><lb />Democrats should olease ? |<lb /><lb />possession at the motel. Wherever there is<lb />prostitution there are illegal drugs and<lb />wherever there are illegal drugs there is a<lb />high instance of property crimes. Such has<lb />been the case in the residential communi-<lb />ties neighboring the oElvis Presley<lb />Whorehouses ? as members of the area re-<lb />fer to the motels.<lb /><lb />Casey Ts was closed as a result of law<lb />enforcement officials obtaining an injunc-<lb />tion from General Sessions Court declar-<lb />ing the motel a nuisance and ordering the<lb />closing until at least until a hearing on<lb />Nov. 22.<lb /><lb />The owners of the motel can seek to<lb />go to trial to contest the nuisance decla-<lb />ration or seek a settlement at the Nov. 22<lb />hearing. If the owners lose a trial, all the<lb />motel Ts property would be forfeited to<lb />the state. This would be a proper fate for<lb />business owners who flaunt the law and<lb />disregard the well being of our commu-<lb />nities.. .<lb /><lb />We hope similar actions will take place<lb />at all the other similar operations along<lb />the corridor unless the motel owners real-<lb />ize their type business is unwelcome in<lb />the community and clean up there act.<lb /><lb />some political courage<lb /><lb />hen will the Democratic<lb /><lb />Party get it? You don Tt win<lb /><lb />elections by trying to be-<lb /><lb />come a blurred copy of<lb /><lb />something else. They keep<lb />losing race after race because they act too<lb />much like Republicans and present no<lb />clear alternative to George W. Bush Ts vi-<lb />sion of America. For heaven Ts sake, they<lb />should either buy or lease some guts, even<lb />if they have to do so on an installment<lb />plan. _<lb /><lb />No one can admire Democrats for hav-<lb />ing the courage of their convictions be-<lb />cause they have neither courage nor con-<lb />victions. They are Republican wasnabes<lb />who can Tt find their sorry butts with both<lb />hands and a map.<lb /><lb />Consequently, African-Americans are<lb />forced to choose between weak-kneed De-<lb />mocrats who take us for granted and<lb />Right-wing Republicans who want to take<lb />us for a ride.<lb /><lb />True to form, some Democrats are try-<lb />ing to attribute their glaring failure on<lb />Election Day to the purported low Black<lb />voter turn out. They are doing that even<lb />though they have no reliable figures to<lb />prove their point.<lb /><lb />Melanie Campbell, executive director of<lb />the National Coalition on Black Civic Par-<lb />ticipation, reminds us that after the 1994<lb />Republican juggernaut, African-Americans<lb />were being blamed for the poor Democrat-<lb />ic showing. However, Census Bureau fig-<lb />ures later showed that Black turnout that<lb />year was higher than that of Whites.<lb /><lb />Overall, voter participation has steadily<lb />declined since the 1960s when nearly 60<lb />percent of registered voters cast ballots.<lb />The independent Committee for the Study<lb />of the American Electorate estimates that<lb />approximately 39 percent of registered<lb />voters went to the polls this year.<lb /><lb />The real problem is not Black voter<lb />turnout but White voter tune-out. In the<lb />last two presidential elections, Bill Clinton<lb />and Al Gore received a minority of the<lb />White vote. In key states, African-Ameri-<lb />can were able to supply Democrats with<lb />the margin of victory.<lb /><lb />But African-Americans can play a piv-<lb />otal role only if an election is close. When<lb />the Democrats get their clocks cleaned,<lb />they should look at the lack of White sup-<lb />port rather than pointing an accusing fin-<lb />ger at African-Americans, who support<lb />them more than any other segment of the<lb />electorate.<lb /><lb />So what do we do?<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />"up on sending Black men and women to ~-<lb /><lb />In addition to challenging the direction<lb />of the badly flawed Democratic Party, we<lb />must accept the political reality of Repub-<lb />licans having taken over all branches of<lb />the federal government. That means we<lb />need to adjust our strategy.<lb /><lb />Inasmuch as the GOP claims to favor<lb />letting local and state officials make most<lb />decisions, we should shift the bulk of our<lb />attention to electing office-holders at the<lb />state and local leyel. We should not give<lb /><lb />Congress, but perhaps we should devote a<lb />greater effort back in the home districts.<lb /><lb />For years, I Tve argued, that we've placed<lb />too much emphasis on electoral politics<lb />and too little on economics. Part of our<lb />political impotence can be attributed to<lb />our failure to flex our economic muscle.<lb /><lb />The University of Georgia projects that<lb />the Black annual spending power will in-<lb />crease from $645.9 billion in 2002 to<lb />$852.8 billion in 2007. Just making the<lb />right spending and investment decisions<lb />can be the Viagra needed to transform our<lb />community.<lb /><lb />Finally, we must look more to one an-<lb />other rather than at the federal govern-<lb />ment. I realize that the federal government<lb />has certain obligations to its citizens and<lb />we should fight for them but I also realize<lb />those obligations are unlikely to be met in<lb />this new political climate.<lb /><lb />Consequently, we must assume a greater<lb />burden for looking after our own. The no-<lb />tion of self-help did not begin or end with<lb />Black conservatives. The NAACP was<lb />founded as a self-help organization in<lb />1909. The National Urban League was es-<lb />tablished as a self-help group the follow-<lb />ing year. Various community development<lb />agencies, many of them in poor neighbor-<lb />hoods, are helping people trapped in<lb />poverty.<lb /><lb />More important than merely relying on<lb />national civil rights groups, we need to re-<lb />turn to the self-help and sense of commu-<lb />nity that has long been a tradition among<lb />us. That means we must support and mo-<lb />bilize our churches; that means that we ac-<lb />cept a collective responsibility for keeping<lb />our young people on the right path and<lb />that means we must use our economic<lb />power to support and grow our own busi-<lb />nesses.<lb /><lb />Like it or not, there has been a regime<lb />change. And it Ts here, not in Iraq. There-<lb />fore, we must make some bold changes.<lb />Clearly, we can Tt wait for wimpy Democ-<lb />rats to do it for us.<lb /><lb />COMMENTS<lb /><lb />Invasion of lrag " the<lb />bigger picture<lb /><lb />uch atten-<lb /><lb />q tion is be-<lb />ing paid<lb />to Presi-<lb /><lb />dent Bush Ts determi-<lb />nation to invade Iraq<lb />based on the suspect-<lb />ed possession by that<lb /><lb />nation of weapons of<lb />mass destruction. Not<lb />a day passes that we<lb />are not oreminded ?<lb />that such possession<lb />poses a threat to U.S.<lb />national security. These regular reminders<lb />do not fall on deaf ears and there are plenty<lb />of us to internalize the perceived threat,<lb />particularly after 9-1-1.<lb /><lb />Equally important to Washington and the<lb />USS. oil interests our government represents<lb />is the future relationship those oil interests<lb />have in opost invasion/military Iraq.<lb /><lb />Let us assume, for a moment, that we do<lb />in fact invade Iraq, secure a military victory<lb />and oust Saddam Hussein, and help replace<lb />him with a U.S. oil interest-friendly regime.<lb />What then will be the status of our relation-<lb />ship with the oil-producing interests in that<lb />company? This<lb />was the situation<lb />at the end of the<lb />debacle of the<lb />2000 election, but<lb />Republicans could<lb />not capitalize on it<lb />after Jim Jeffords of Vermont switched<lb />from the Republican party to the De-<lb />mocrats in the Senate.<lb /><lb />Now, Republicans are responsible for<lb />producing public policies that confront<lb />many of the most complex problems in<lb />the country.<lb /><lb />Republicans picked up three seats in<lb />the House and probably wilt control the<lb />Senate, which was undecided at the time<lb />of this writing, since they have 50 Senate<lb />seats with three undecided, two of them<lb />in Minnesota and Louisiana, where De-<lb />mocrats were expected to win. Much will<lb />be said about the influence of George<lb />Bush on the outcome, but his influence is<lb />not so much vested in him personally, al-<lb />though his ratings were in the 65 percent<lb />range in pre-election polling.<lb /><lb />e key to his influence was that<lb />Bush has become the personification of<lb />the fears of Americans about their own<lb />personal security, and the election re-<lb />sults show that those fears trumped eco-<lb />nomic insecurity. So, the campaign<lb />strategy of Karl Rove, the White House<lb />political adviser, to Trun on the war ?<lb />was not followed, since few Republi-<lb />cans actually ran on war and peace is-<lb />sues. Some, like Saxby Chambliss of<lb />Georgia did run on homeland security<lb />issues, and Bush campaigned on the<lb />fact that Democrats did not give him<lb />the Homeland Security Bill that he<lb />wanted. Nevertheless, the so-called<lb /> owar t terrorism ? was one of the<lb />hidden facets of this driving<lb /><lb />"fears of their security and<lb />cli to Bush to resolve them,<lb />_ The other major factor that accounts<lb />for the Republican victories was the ab-<lb /><lb />Ron Walters<lb /><lb />The Black Electorate "<lb />Missing in action again<lb /><lb />date, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend did<lb /><lb />liters is professor of government<lb /><lb />sence of the base vote of the Democrat-<lb />ic party. Losses by Democrats in Geor-<lb />gia, Maryland, Texas, North Carolina<lb />and other states indicate that the Black<lb />vote, in particular, just did not turn out.<lb />The issues that Blacks, Hispanics and<lb />other constituencies that have been<lb />more dependent upon government, have<lb />cared about were not front and center in<lb />the agenda of the Democratic party.<lb />And in states such as Maryland, there<lb />was some alienation among Blacks that<lb />although the Republican candidate for<lb />governor picked a Black running mate,<lb />Michael Steele, the Democratic candi-<lb /><lb />not. Undoubtedly, this depressed the<lb />Black turnout in key areas of the state.<lb /><lb />In Georgia, there may have been<lb />some residual fallout of the Cynthia<lb />Mckinney race that caused many Black<lb />voters to stay home, leading to the de-<lb />feat of Charles Walker, the Black candi-<lb />date in the 12th District. So, some local<lb />as well as national agenda issues may<lb />have been at play.<lb /><lb />Finally, there is a confused leadership<lb />situation in the Democratic party, so<lb />that when one compares the clarity and<lb />force of the Republican message with<lb />what the Democrat had to offer, voters<lb />were not energized by the comparison.<lb />The Democrats used many individuals<lb />to convey their message, including the<lb />popular Bill Clinton. However, there<lb />were many Democratic parties with<lb />Richard Gephart running for President,<lb />and putting forth a wimpy position on<lb />the war with Iraq and me too ? mes-<lb />sage on cutting taxes with respect to the<lb />economy that might have been pro-<lb />posed by a Republican. So voters could<lb />not see the clear distinction between the<lb />Republican message and leadership and<lb /><lb />Democrats.<lb /><lb />The bright light in all of this is that "<lb />with the Republicans now in charge, if<lb />they mess up the complex issues of war<lb /><lb />the economy for which they now<lb />have full responsibility, it sets up a<lb /><lb />good situation in for Democrats.<lb /><lb />; sat the University of Mary-<lb /><lb />this region. <lb />Dr. George Hawkins<lb /><lb />THE PERILOUS TIMES<lb />IN WHICH WE LIVE<lb /><lb />Greetings:<lb /><lb />| was prompted to ask a<lb />question in my Bible Study<lb />Class and | think | will ask<lb />you also. With this entire<lb />gospel being taught, what is<lb />wrong with our churches? In<lb />the book of Amos 8:11 God<lb />said Behold the days come,<lb />saith the Lord GOD, that |<lb />will send a famine in the<lb />land, not a famine of bread<lb />nor a thrist for water, but of<lb />hearing the words of the<lb />LORD: Well if this is the<lb />cause people then what is<lb />causing our ears to be dull of<lb />hearing. Let's go to the<lb />Scripture to find the answer<lb />to the question. In 2 Timothy<lb />chapter 3 we find the Apostle<lb />Paul explaining to Timothy<lb /><lb />about what the last days<lb />would be. You see we are<lb />living in the end times and we<lb />should not think it strange if<lb />we see that bad men have<lb />crept into our churches. You<lb />see Jesus told us in Matt. 13:<lb />47 that the net of the gospel<lb />was to enclose good fish and<lb />bad fish. You keep the good<lb />and cast out the bad. In the<lb />24th Chapter of Matthew we<lb /><lb />are told that there would<lb />come seducers, but we must<lb />not become offended, what<lb />we should do is gird our-<lb />selves with the Word of God<lb />that we may be able to stand<lb />in these perilous times. In the<lb />most precious metal gold ore<lb />there will be dross and in the<lb />best wheat crop you will see<lb />chaff among it when it lies on<lb />the floor. Fellow Christian,<lb />You must know that in the<lb />last days, in the gospel times,<lb />there will come perilous<lb />times (perilous means dan-<lb />gerous, unsafe, hazardous,<lb />risky, death-defymg and terri-<lb />fying). Though the gospel<lb />time is a time of restructuring<lb />our lives in many aspect it's<lb />also a time of perilous living<lb />(not so much on the account<lb />of persecution from without<lb />but on the account of corrup-<lb />tion from within). These<lb />would be difficult times,<lb />wherein it would be difficult<lb />for a man to keep a good<lb />conscience. Paul does not<lb />say, Perilous times shall<lb />come, for both Jews and<lb />Gentiles shall be combined to<lb />root out Christianity," but<lb />"perilous times shall come,<lb />for such as have the form of<lb />godliness shall be corrupt and<lb />wicked, and do a great deal of<lb />damage to the church." Two<lb />schemers within the church<lb />may do more hurt to it than<lb />two thousand schemers with-<lb />out. Several different things<lb /><lb />cause perilous times: 1. Sin<lb />makes the times perilous.<lb />When there is a general<lb />corruption of manners, and of<lb />the tempers of me% this<lb />makes the times dangerous to<lb />live in; for it is hard to keep<lb />our integrity in the midst of<lb />general corruption. 2. The<lb />coming of perilous times is an<lb />evidence of the truth of<lb />scripture-prophecy, if the<lb /><lb />event in this respect did not ?<lb />answer to the prophecy, we<lb />might be tempted to question<lb />the divinity of the Bible. 3.<lb /><lb /> We are all concerned to know<lb /><lb />Ns, to believe and consider it,<lb />that we may not be surprised<lb />when we see the times peril-<lb />ous: Church, you may ask<lb />what would be the occasion<lb />of making these times peril-<lb />ous, or what shall be the<lb />marks and signs whereby<lb />these times may be known. I<lb />- Self-love will make the<lb />times perilous. Who is it that<lb />does not love himself, by this<lb />it is meant of an irregular<lb />sinful self-love. Men love<lb />their carnal selves better than<lb />their spiritual selves. Men<lb />love to gratify their own<lb />lusts, and make provision for<lb />them, more than to please<lb />God and do their duty.<lb />Instead of Christian charity,<lb />which takes care for the good<lb />of others, they will mind<lb />themselves only, and prefer<lb />their own gratification before<lb />the church's edification. 2.<lb />Covetousness. Self-love<lb />brings in a long train of sins<lb />and mischief. When men are<lb />lovers of themselves, no good<lb />can be expected from them,<lb />as all good may be expected<lb />from those who love God<lb />with all their he". When<lb />covetousness generally pre-<lb />vails, when every man is for<lb />what he can get and for<lb />keeping what he has, this<lb /><lb />makes men dangerous to one<lb />another, and obliges every<lb />man to stand on his guard<lb />against his neighbor. 3. Pride<lb />and vainglory. The times are<lb />perilous when men, being<lb />proud of themselves, are<lb />boasters and blasphemers,<lb />boasters before men whom<lb />they despise and look upon<lb />with scorn, and blasphemers<lb />of God and of his name.<lb /><lb />Sow A Seed<lb /><lb />Sow A Seed<lb /><lb />Phil. 1:6<lb /><lb />"Being confident of this very<lb />thing, that HE which hath begun<lb />a good work in you will perform<lb />it until the day of Jesus Christ:"<lb /><lb />As | reminiscence on the sayings<lb />of my mother, I will always<lb />remember the words that she<lb />sowed repetitiously into my spirit<lb />as a child. My mother purchased<lb />a light-blue T-shirt for me with<lb />these words accented in glitter,<lb />"Winners Never Quit and quit-<lb />ters never win."<lb /><lb />As | was thinking about this<lb />saying, the Holy Spirit illumi-<lb />nated the words of Paul that were<lb />inspired by the Holy Spirit in<lb />Phil. 1:6. As I began to read this<lb />familiar passage of scripture, |<lb />began to hear the spirit of Paul<lb />as he began to speak to me. Paul<lb /><lb />was allowing me to know that<lb />there are many things that | may<lb />not be confident in or assured of<lb />or rooted and grounded in. But<lb />Paul made a powerful point, it's<lb />not how much I know but it is<lb />the content of what I know. Paul<lb />said, "Being confident (assured<lb />of knowing) this very thing, that<lb />He (God) which has begun,<lb />which has started this good work<lb />in you:<lb /><lb />| want to pause for a moment<lb />and encourage your hearts.<lb />Think about the things in life that<lb />you have started and never<lb />completed. Think about the<lb />things in life that you have<lb />started and completed. Begin to<lb />ponder over the outcome of both<lb />feelings that were experienced.<lb />When you started something and<lb />never completed it, you felt<lb />useless and worthless. You were<lb />beginning to believe the lies of<lb />the devil; once you have failed,<lb />you will always be a failure.<lb />This lie has crippled the process<lb />of many born again believers that<lb />once stepped out by faith to<lb />accomplish a mandate that was<lb />placed upon their lives. Because<lb />of interruptions, distractions or<lb />detours, you gave up and said<lb />what's the use. Just think about<lb />a time that you set forth to do<lb />something, and even though ob-<lb />stacles came your way, you didn't<lb />give up but you continued to<lb />press toward the mark. How did<lb />you feel after everything had<lb /><lb />been said and done? You felt<lb />relieved and even welcomed<lb />more challenges. Why?<lb />Because you endured.<lb /><lb />We should be excited and rejoic-<lb />ing in knowing that God, when<lb />He began the good work in you,<lb />whether it was preaching, teach-<lb />ing, singing, ministry of helps.<lb />writing or whatever gift that once<lb />was the center of your being;<lb />whatever brought forth that spar-<lb />kle in your eyes, when you<lb />would think about the love and<lb />passion that you had for a<lb />particular thing. Know that was<lb />God beginning the performance<lb />of a great work in ydur life. Paul<lb />was assuring us that because |<lb />know who started the work; | am<lb />assured that He will complete it<lb />because I have seen God's re-<lb />sume. Everything that He started<lb />out with, looked like nothing. but<lb />when He was completed, it was<lb />definitely a work of art.<lb /><lb />So, | encourage you on this day.<lb />whatever good work God has<lb />started in you, it will be com-<lb />pleted and you will operate in it<lb />and fulfill or perform the duties<lb />assigned to you until Jesus shall<lb />return on that great day and say,<lb />"Thou good and faithful servant. ?<lb /><lb />Thought to meditate on:<lb />The spirit of a winner is<lb />birthed in a person even be-<lb />fore the manifestation of win-<lb />ning is ever evident.<lb /><lb />J. Unthankfulness and<lb />unholiness make the times<lb />perilous, and these two com-<lb />monly .go together. What is<lb />the reason that men are<lb />unholy and without the fear<lb />of God, or that they are<lb />unthankful for the mercies of<lb />God? Ungratefulness and sin<lb />go together; for call a man<lb />ungrateful, and you can call<lb />him by no worse name.<lb />Unthankful and impure, de-<lb />filed with fleshly lusts, which<lb />is an instance of great un-<lb />gratefulness to that God who<lb />has provided so well for the<lb />support of the body; we<lb />abuse his gifts, if we make<lb />them the food and fuel of our<lb />lusts. 6. The times are peril-<lb />ous when men will not be<lb />held by the bonds either of<lb />nature or common honesty,<lb />when they are without natu-<lb />ral affection, and truce-<lb />breakers, there is a natural<lb />affection due to all. Wherever<lb /><lb />there is the human nature,<lb />there should be humanity<lb />towards those of the same<lb />nature, but especially be-<lb />tween relationships. Times<lb />are perilous when children<lb />are disobedient to their par-<lb />ents and when parents are<lb />without natural affection to<lb />their children See what a<lb />corruption of nature sin is,<lb />how it deprives men even of<lb /><lb />that which nature has im-<lb />planted in them for the sup.<lb />port of their own kind, for<lb /><lb />natural affection of parents to.<lb /><lb />their children is that which<lb />contributes very much to the<lb />keeping up of mankind upon<lb />the earth. And time who will<lb />not be bound by natural<lb />affection, no wonder that they<lb />will not be bound by the most<lb />solemn association and cove-<lb />nants. They are truce-<lb />breakers that make no con-<lb />science of the engagements<lb />they have laid themselves<lb />under. 7. The times are<lb />perilous when men are false<lb />accusers one of another, dev-<lb />ils one to another, having no<lb />regard to the good name of<lb />others, or to the religious<lb />obligations of an oath, but<lb />flunking themselves at liberty<lb />to say and do what they<lb />please, Ps. 12:4. S. When<lb />men have no government of<lb />themselves and their own<lb />appetites, they are inconti-<lb />nent, not of their own pas-<lb />sions, for they are fierce,<lb />when they have no rule over<lb />their own spirits, and there-<lb />fore are like a city that is<lb />broken down, and has no<lb />walls: they are soon keyed<lb />up. upon the least provoca-<lb />tion. 9. When that which Is<lb />good and ought to be honored<lb />is generally despised and<lb />looked upon with contempt. It<lb />is the pride of persecutors<lb />that thev look with contempt<lb /><lb />upon good people, though<lb />they are more excellent than<lb />their neighbors. 10. When<lb />men are generally unfaithful<lb />headstrong, and proud, the<lb />times are perilous when men<lb />are traitors, heady, high-<lb />minded Our Savior has fore-<lb />told that the brother shall<lb />betray the brother to death<lb />and the father the child (Mt.<lb />10:21), and those are the<lb /><lb />It's A Grownfolks<lb />Houseparty Every Friday<lb /><lb />Nite On Joy 1340AM<lb />Join: RCM - Dr Bones<lb />The Meadowbrook Kid - DJ Jelly<lb />and Mike Adams<lb /><lb />pu up. ng scorn-<lb />fully to all about them, and<lb />when this temper generally<lb />prevails, then the times are<lb />perilous. | 1. When men are ?<lb />generally lovers of pleasure<lb />more than lovers of God<lb />When there are more experts<lb />than true Christians, then the<lb />times are bad indeed. God is<lb />to be loved above all. That is<lb />a carne] mind that is against<lb />Him and is full of enmity,<lb />which prefers any thing be-<lb />fore him, especially such a<lb />filthy thing as carnal pleasure<lb />is. 12. When, notwithstand-<lb />ing all this, they have the<lb />form of godliness, are called<lb />by the Christian name, bap-<lb />tized into the Christian faith.<lb />and make a show of religion;<lb />but how reasonable so ever<lb />their form of godliness is,<lb />they deny the power of it.<lb />When they take upon them<lb />the form which should and<lb />would bring along with it the<lb />power thereof, they will put<lb />asunder what God hat joined<lb />together: they will assume<lb />the form of godliness, to take<lb />away their reproach; but they<lb />will not submit to the power<lb />of it, to take away their sin.<lb />Men may be very bad and<lb />wicked under a profession of<lb />religion; they may be lovers<lb />of themselves, etc.., yet have<lb />a form of godliness. A form<lb />of godliness is a very differ-<lb />ent thing from the power of it;<lb />men may have the one and be<lb />wholly destitute of the other:<lb />yet they deny it, at least<lb />practically in their lives.<lb />From such good Christians<lb />must withdraw themselves.<lb /><lb />Small business owners are part of our electric co-op.<lb /><lb />North Carolina's<lb />electric cooperatives<lb /><lb />at<lb /><lb />[ied<lb />Touchstone Energy T<lb /><lb /></p>

It's<lb />a shame," said hip hop deejay Ed<lb />Lover, staring at the yellow T<lb />police tape surrounding the mur-<lb />der scene.<lb /><lb />People stood on the street<lb />hugging and crying, gasping in<lb />shock as police removed the rap<lb />music legend's corpse in a body<lb />bag. A second founding member<lb />of Run-DMC, Darryl (DMC)<lb />McDaniels, and fellow rap star<lb />Chuck D. gathered in front of the<lb />studio to console each other as<lb />Run-DMC's greatest hits blared<lb />from a parked car's speakers.<lb /><lb />%<lb /><lb />1.<lb />S45 Vivo Be fe<lb /><lb />Word of Jay's death quickly<lb />spread to Hollis, where the<lb />37-year old father of three grew<lb />up and formed one the biggest<lb />groups in rap history with<lb />McDaniels and Joseph (Run)<lb />Simmons.<lb /><lb />"It's a loss because he was a<lb />pioneer in the rap game. This<lb />violence wasn't a part of Run-<lb />DMC's message," said Arlene<lb />Clark, 39, who grew up with Jay,<lb />born Jason Mizell, in Hollis.<lb /><lb />George Addison, 39, of Hollis<lb />said Run-DMC's mega-selling<lb />albums touched him like no other<lb />music.<lb /><lb />"Hip Hop raised me, and<lb />Run-DMC were the grandfa-<lb />thers," he said.<lb /><lb />Tuned in....<lb /><lb />Grief also spread to airwaves as<lb /> hip hop radio stations like<lb /> WWPR-FM Power 105 and<lb />WQHT-FM Hot 97 opened their<lb /> phone lines to stunned listeners.<lb /><lb />Deejay Funkmaster Flex an-<lb />nounced the death on hot 97 and<lb />expressed condolences from the<lb /><lb />radio station to Mizell's family<lb />and band.<lb /><lb />"Jay was one of the guys from<lb />the early '80s who had a relation-<lb />ship--with a lot of the new<lb />artists, ? <lb />had a life of suffering and not a<lb />life of ease. If you tell me that<lb />you believe in Jesus, and |<lb />know you do, and you declare<lb />to the world that Jesus is the<lb />Son of God, and I know you<lb />declare that, then what father<lb />would treat his son in that<lb />manner? You wouldn Tt do that<lb />to your son. But Allah (God)<lb />saw fit to do that for a big<lb />e. The religion doesn Tt<lb />start at his (Jesus) birth and it<lb />doesn Tt start during his ministry.<lb />We take the calendar from the<lb />time of his suffering.<lb />We don Tt start the calendar of<lb />Islam with the birth of Prophet<lb />Muhammad, Peace Be Upon<lb />Him (PBUH) or even from the<lb />day of his first revelation of the<lb />Qur Tan. It starts from the time<lb />of a death plot and his flight to<lb />escape death. It seems that<lb />Allah (God), in His wonderful<lb />way of doing things, puts on us<lb />affliction. He wants to know, do<lb />you love anything or anyone<lb />more than you love Him, since<lb />He is our Creator. And since<lb />everything we have is from<lb />Him, not from ourselves, then<lb />He will try us by whatever we<lb />have that we love and put<lb />before Him.<lb />He tried Abraham by his son:<lb /><lb />Take him up on the mountain,<lb />Abraham, and plunge a dagger<lb />into his heart. I don Tt know<lb />what Abraham went through to<lb />decide to obey Allah (God).<lb />But his obedience to Allah<lb />(God) made him the friend of<lb />Allah (God). Abraham loved<lb />his son but he didn Tt love his<lb />son more than he loved the<lb />Father, the God, the Creator, so<lb />he took his son up on the<lb />mountain.<lb /><lb />I] read something once where<lb />Satan came to Ishmael<lb />(Abraham Ts son) and _ said,<lb />"boy, he Ts not planning to<lb />sacrifice a ram up there "it Ts<lb />you." But the boy never re-<lb />belled. He said if that Ts what<lb />pleases Allah (God), that Ts<lb />what pleases him. He didn Tt<lb />fight his father; He laid on the<lb />alter. As the father was about to<lb />plunge the dagger into his<lb />heart, Allah (God) stayed his<lb />hand and He said, here is the<lb />father that loves Me enough to<lb />kill a son that he had been<lb />longing for. And here Ts a son<lb />that loved Me enough that if the<lb />father said that this is what<lb />(God) wanted my father to T do,<lb />it Ts all right with me. Then<lb />Allah (God) said His covenant<lb />would not only be with the<lb />father; His covenant will also<lb />be with the son. He used them<lb />as a sign of a Father who would<lb />sacrifice a son and make him a<lb />redeeming agent for humanity.<lb /><lb />Trials are necessary to bring out<lb />of you what is hidden within<lb />you. What Allah (God) has put<lb />within each human being does<lb />not come out without struggle.<lb />If you think life should be easy,<lb />you need to rethink your posi-<lb />tion. If you think that because<lb />you go to church and tithe that<lb />Allah (God) shouldn Tt bring<lb />misfortune into your life, yet the<lb />prophets that went before you<lb /><lb />- Jesus said:<lb /><lb />question Allah (God). He Ts the<lb /><lb />teacher. He said, didn Tt I give<lb /><lb />you authority over all my<lb />creatures? The chicken wants to<lb />live; the lamb wants to live; the<lb />cow wants to live. Maybe the<lb />horse doesn Tt want to be ridden<lb />today, but you ride it. So are<lb />you any better? If Allah (God)<lb />puts the lower lives under our<lb />subjection, then our lives are<lb />for Allah Ts (God Ts) purpose and<lb />will. There is no life that leaves<lb />here that doesn Tt leave with a<lb /><lb />purpose. |<lb /><lb />I believe that from Mississippi<lb />will come the greatest leaders,<lb />the greatest teachers and the<lb />greatest preachers because you<lb />are victims of the greatest<lb />tyranny and oppression in the<lb />history of the United States of<lb />America. Out of that suffering,<lb />Allah (God) brings greatness. It<lb />is out of suffering that the<lb />creative power is unleashed. If<lb />you don Tt suffer, you can Tt<lb />create. So don Tt run from your<lb />pain, run to it. Don Tt run from<lb />your trial and don Tt turn your<lb />back on your struggle. Allah<lb />(God) says in the Qur Tan that<lb />He created man to face diffi-<lb />culty. If you turn your back like<lb />a coward because you don Tt<lb />want to face the trials and<lb />tribulation that life comes up<lb />with "you Td rather drink your-<lb />self under or smoke yourself<lb />under, you Td rather commit<lb />suicide rather than to face<lb />difficulty "then you disbelieve<lb /><lb />in the Power of Allah (God) to<lb />change any reality, no matter<lb />how harsh that reality may be.<lb />Allah makes the righteous<lb />Everybody is not a child of<lb />Allah (God). Satan has children<lb />here, too. We hope that Allah<lb />(God) is our Father, but he<lb />doesn Tt have to be. Mother, you<lb />can Tt make a righteous child. |<lb />don Tt care how good you are,<lb />how good your husband is or<lb />how much Bible you read, you<lb />cannot make a righteous child.<lb />All you can do is put the tools<lb />there. Only when Allah (God)<lb />steps in and takes your child<lb />does your child become a child<lb />of Allah (God).<lb /><lb />Jesus had an argument with<lb />some Jewish people in that day,<lb />according to the Bible, and they<lb />were claiming that "Allah<lb />(God) is our Father. Even<lb />Abraham is our father." And<lb />"If ye were<lb />Abraham's children, ye would<lb />do the works of Abraham."<lb />(St. John 8:39)<lb /><lb />They said to Jesus, even God is<lb />our father. And Jesus said: "If<lb />God were your Father, you<lb />would love me: for I pro-<lb />ceeded forth and came from<lb />God; neither came I of myself,<lb />but he sent me." (St. John<lb />8:42)<lb /><lb />He told them: "But now ye<lb />seek to kill me, a man that<lb />hath told you the truth, which<lb />I have heard of God: this did<lb />not Abraham." (St. John<lb />8:40) "Ye are of your father<lb />the devil... He was a murderer<lb />from the beginning, and<lb />abode not in the truth, be-<lb />cause there is no truth in him.<lb />When he speaketh a lie, he<lb />speaketh of his own: for he is<lb />a liar, and the father of it."<lb />(St. John 8:44)<lb /><lb />He Ts separating children from a<lb />father by means of their work.<lb /><lb />a.<lb /><lb />then cursed are the warmongers<lb /><lb />for they shall be called: the<lb />enemies of Allah (God), the<lb />children of Satan. You T ve got to<lb />call it lke it eae<lb />Ipit if you Tre going to preac<lb />fatktruths. No. weak-<lb />coward can h Jesus. Do<lb />you think Minister Carthan is<lb />calling you into a work that will<lb />be easy? Jesus said that if any<lb />man would be his disciple, he Td<lb />have to first deny himself, pick<lb />up whose cross? Your cross.<lb />en what? Follow him. Jesus<lb />didn Tt say worship him; he said<lb />follow him. That means that<lb />where Jesus puts his foot down,<lb />you walk where he walks. You<lb />do what he did. And Allah<lb />(God) will give you the same<lb />blessing and power that he gave<lb />to him.<lb />Purpose of church, mosque<lb />and synagogue<lb />This is a church, a building of<lb />stone, mortar and wood that<lb />Brother Minister Carthan and<lb />his family have the keys to in<lb />order to do a good work. What<lb />is the purpose? Why did Allah<lb />(God) even allow a church or a<lb />mosque or a synagogue or a<lb />cloister or a cathedral or a<lb />temple to be formed? All of you<lb />go to some church, some<lb />mosque, some synagogue, some<lb />temple, but what are you there<lb />for? Is it a social meeting place<lb />where you go to check out<lb />whose wearing what? Do you<lb />go there to gossip, to talk about<lb />your neighbor and what you<lb /><lb />heard that they got into last<lb />night or last week? What do<lb />you come here for?<lb /><lb />It is because Allah (God) knew<lb />that Satan was going to be in<lb />power for a period of time until<lb />the coming of Allah (God). If<lb />Satan were going to rule the<lb />world for a season, then how<lb />would the people of Allah<lb />(God) be able to live in Satan Ts<lb />world unless they had a place to<lb />go, a place of repair? It Ts like an<lb />automobile mechanic " shop.<lb />When something goes wrong<lb />with your car and you don't<lb />know how to fix it, you take it<lb />to the mechanic. He may ask<lb />you to leave it a day or two.<lb />And you come back and get<lb />your car and drive on. That's<lb />what these houses (of worship)<lb />are for. They are for you to<lb />come out of the world ruled by<lb />Satan and come into a house<lb />that Ts supposedly ruled by<lb />Allah (God) "I say supposedly<lb />because everybody talking<lb />about heaven is not going there.<lb />If the kingdom is here (within<lb />you), then it Ts buried under the<lb />rubbish of what you think and<lb />how you act. When the rubbish<lb />is cleared away and_ the<lb />Kingdom of Allah (God) is<lb />resurrected in you, then Allah<lb />(God) starts moving in you.<lb />When Allah (God) starts mov-<lb />ing in you, you get a self-<lb />accusing spirit that begins to<lb />tell you, | shouldn Tt have done<lb />that. Why did I do this? Oh,<lb />Lord, have mercy on me. The<lb />self-accusing spirit wakes you<lb />up in the night and keeps you<lb />upset where you can Tt sleep<lb />because you T ve been wrong and<lb />your own self is accusing you.<lb />Then you know the spirit of<lb />Allah (God) is working in you.<lb /><lb />Greenville Financial Services,<lb /><lb />3101 S. <lb />pe aS eis a: Ba<lb /><lb />REYV.AL SHARPTON AIMS FOR THE<lb />WHITE HOUSE AND THE DEMOCRATS<lb /><lb />AL SHARPTONS CALENDAR SAYS IT'S 1988. THAT'S THE year Jesse Jackson, in his second bid for the highest office in the land, transformed the Democratic presidential primary into a tent revival.<lb />With a rainbow coalition" of blacks and left-wing whites behind him, Jackson won several major primaries and was even an early front-rumer. At the Democratic National Convention, Jackson earned 30<lb />percent of the delegates T votes. Since that pivotal moment Sharpton says, black political empowerment has remained at a standstill. 'I don't minimize Jackson," says the 48-year-old lightening-rod reverend,<lb />activist and poltician, in his pulpit-inspired tone. The question is, why did we ever stop running? What did we get from that? Nothing....We stopped in'88. What did we get from that? Nothing. What did we<lb />get from going back inside and playing the cocktail politics? Nothing." That's Sharpton talking in summer 2002, sitting in his Harlem office at the National Action Network headquarters and expounding on<lb />one of the most intriguing rumors of the upcoming: i political season, a rumor that Sharpton promotes as much as he promotes himself- that he will run for president in 2004. Still svelte from his jail stint in<lb />2001, he is wearing a neat navy blue suit. His trademark hair is a slightly tamer incarnation T of the mane we once knew. He seems every bit like a man with a plan to pick up where Jackson-whom Sharpton<lb />calls his mentor but the press calls his rival-left off 14 years ago. 'We've lost a lot of what Reverend Jackson [gained for] us," he says "We don't have any black governors now. We don't have any blacks in<lb />the U.S. Senate. We lost after he stopped running. ? By early October Sharpton had not dfficially thrown his hat into the ring. But he had formed an exploratory team to devise a strategy to win the upcoming<lb />Democratic nomination (and we all know that "exploratory" is code for highly likely to run T). He had announced that he would step aside as president and CEO of the National Action Network in early 2003.<lb />He'd even written a book, Al on America (Dafina Books/Kensington Publishing, $27), outlining his political vision. And he'd lined up a host of heavyweights who would likely support him. Among them: BET<lb />CEO Robert L. Johnson and Sharpe James, mayor of Newark, New Jersey. 'First of all, | wouldn't run if 1 wasn't running to win," Sharpton says. 'I'm the only one running that even if I don't win, the people<lb />with me can win in the process.<lb /><lb />"I THINK OUR CAMPAIGN WILL BE A SHOWDOWN FOR WHERE THE DEMOCRATIC<lb />PARTY IS GOING."<lb /><lb />There's no denying the victories Jackson achieved during his two White House bids. He inspired legions of blacks to register and vote, which helped elect a black governor in 1989 (Virginia's Doug Wilder)<lb />and a black senator in 1992 (Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois, most recently the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand, now said to be pondering another fin for public office). Jackson's bids also provided momentum<lb />for Democrats to regain control of the Senate in 1986. Sharpton says he wants not only to restore those gains but also to build upon them. His oagehda is nothing new. It's borrowed from the mantra that helped<lb />drive the Jackson campaigns: The Democratic party takes African Americans-its most loyal voters-for granted and must be pressured to empower, not abandon, its black base. Sharpton sees the Democratic<lb />Leadership Council (DLC), a powerful organization of centrist Democrats (he calls them the Democratic leisure class), as one of the driving forces to take the power of the party to the right and consequent-<lb />ly away from blacks. "It is a vital time to energize [blacks] and put [them] in power," says Sharpton, "and I think our campaign will be a showdown for where the Democratic party is going." Already Sharpton's<lb />message has quietly resonated with some voters. In August a national poll conducted by Zogby International found that a surprising 5 percent of Democratic voters want Sharpton to be the party's 2004<lb />presidential nominee. Sharpton tied with House Minority Leader Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and former New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley. Sharpton scored ahead of such<lb />powerhouses as Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. Only former vice president Al Gore (41 percent) and Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut<lb />(6 percent) came in ahead of the reverend. Sharpton is also finding a receptive audience with a faction of Democrats equally outraged by the DLC-lefiist whites on the fringe of the party. That support widens<lb />his appeal, but a coalition of leftist whites and blacks is fraught with challenges. "There are tensions," Sharpton acknowledges. "If I run, [those tensions} will become creative tensions [that] need to be debated<lb />out. I'll give you an example. Many leaders of the gay and lesbian communities have met with me and want to support me. [Yet] some of the [black] ministers who have supported me have disagreedwith this.<lb />Once we began [sitting gays and lesbians} down in various cities [with] the minister ... [we found] there can be common ground ... you learn how to adjust ... to work for the better good. You can't be against<lb />discrimination by race, or based on gender or sexual orientation. So | think that's, where you start bringing these things together." :<lb />Beyond inclusion, Sharpton also promises to force the Democratic party to address racial profiling, racial disparities in sentencing and the need for job training programs as the economy tanks. Those planks of<lb />his platform are meant to solidify his support among blacks. But the most critical aspect of Sharpton Ts strategy-to stem the party's move toward the center-assumes that black voters are left-leaning, In an age<lb />when we have a black secretary of state, a black national security advisor and a handful of black CEOs of major corporations, do we need a protest candidate to demand our place at the table? One could easily<lb />argue that the party's move to the center actually appeals to many black voters. After all, who was the chief engineer of the donkey's cen- trist shift and one of the founding members of the DLC? William<lb />Jefferson Clinton, the only two-term Democratic com- mander in chief since Franklin D. Roosevelt and a man some black folks call America's first black president.<lb /><lb />A Sharpton campaign waged on building black power in the Democratic party would carry another risk as well: Arguably, black power in the party truly picked up steam when Ron Brown was elected chairman<lb />of the Democratic National Committee in 1989. In 1984 there were 20 black Democratic members of Congress. Today there are 38. Couldn't Al make more of an impact in the Republican party, which had<lb />only one black con- gressman going into the November 2002 elections? "I would not run in the Republican party because I'm not Republican," Sharpton says. 'I think that it is time to challenge both parties.<lb />I encourage black and Latino Republicans to do that same thing."<lb /><lb />TABERNACLE CENTE OF DE<lb />| HANKSGIVIN<lb />10TH ANNUAL THANKSGLY<lb /><lb /></p>

The fact<lb />that they completely deny the<lb />way of TRUTH God explains to<lb />us in Scripture!<lb /><lb />Remember the proverb we read<lb />earlier. It talked about the<lb />importance of orod and reproof ?<lb />in raising a child who will not<lb />bring shame to his parents. God<lb />says that a proper level of control<lb />must be maintained over chil-<lb />dren.<lb /><lb />This verse is talking about<lb /><lb />DISCIPLINE<lb /><lb />--corporal punishment<lb />--and INSTRUCTION.<lb />God COMMANDS<lb />that parents use both!<lb />Proverbs 13:24 says that<lb />parents who fail to physically<lb />discipline their children actually<lb /><lb />HATE them. That their concern:<lb /><lb />for themselves exceeds their<lb />concern for the long-term well-<lb />being of their children. That may<lb />rankle modern parents. But<lb />remember, it is GOD--the<lb />Creator of heaven and earth, of<lb />mankind--who gave this instruc-<lb />tion. Rather than dismissing it<lb />offhand, shouldn't we try to<lb />UNDERSTAND it?<lb /><lb />Unlike so many raising teenag-<lb />ers today, God has keen interest<lb />in maintaining parents T authority<lb />over their kids.<lb /><lb /> oHonor thy father and mother ?<lb />is the Fifth Commandment--just<lb />before oThou shalt not kill. ?<lb />Teens break it routinely without<lb />second thought. You may think<lb />the fault lies with the teen<lb />themselves, since the law is<lb />directed at them (it is not written,<lb /> oMake sure kids honor their<lb />father and mother ?). But who<lb />teaches children the sanctity of<lb />the law? No teen will respect<lb /><lb />commandments they were not<lb />brought up their parents to<lb />respect.<lb /><lb />This is a point that was made<lb />in a Plain Truth article 36 years<lb />ago. It should convict us today<lb />all the more. The article stated,<lb /> oToday Ts leaders failed their<lb />duty--they did not teach the<lb />younger generation the real pur-<lb />pose of life. Why? Because they<lb />themselves did not the purpose of<lb />life. Society never taught it in<lb />school because they in turn had<lb />never learned it. People simply<lb />don Tt know why they were<lb />born! ?<lb /><lb />( oThe Beat Generation, ? March<lb />1966)<lb /><lb />Later the article said, oThe<lb />trouble is society has taught its<lb /> children T directly or indirectly<lb />THAT THERE IS NO REAL<lb />PURPOSE TO LIFE! ?<lb /><lb />What about you?<lb /><lb />Do you rstand the e<lb />of life well enough to teach and<lb />CONVICT your children of it?<lb />Are you willing to learn? It will<lb />be the MOST IMPORTANT<lb />THING you could ever give your<lb /><lb />teenager!<lb />Excerpted from The Philadelphia<lb />Trumpet/July 2002<lb /><lb />Mother Willie Ann<lb />Wilkes celebrated her<lb />9eSth birthday on Oct<lb />19 th at the Golden<lb />Corral with family and<lb />friends. If you are a single parent, you understand. If you are a<lb />single parent of more than one child, then you really understand and I offer you my<lb />sanity kit of muscle relaxers, herbal tea, lemonflower body butter, and a bottle of wine.<lb /><lb />If you are blessed enough to see happy children everyday, thank your lucky stars!<lb />But, if you are like many of us who have children that have attitudes, illnesses, hang-ups,<lb />and habits, then I say to you my people, olet's unite. ? Children are emotional little<lb />creatures that constantly have an opinion. By the way, if you forgot to check with your<lb />children on who left the cereal all over the table this morning, don't call the school,<lb />because I can bet you there will be something else at home waiting for you.<lb /><lb />This next topic is one for everyone. Have you ever written down a list of chores<lb />for everyone to do and received nothing but complaints and tears? Not to mention the<lb />explanations owhy? ? Children have no concept of time. If children had ay poe<lb />time, they would understand that mommy or daddy is tired from working all day. They<lb />would understand that your brain is fried, died, and lying to the left side. They would<lb />understand that your feet hurt from walking all day. You've also been writing out<lb />grocery lists and stretching the bill money while planning the next PTA meeting. IF<lb /><lb />our children had any concept of time, they would automatically remove themselves<lb /><lb />rom the*dinner table and go to bed. It doesn't matter if they are funky, dirty, and<lb />stinky. It only matters that they understand that mommy or daddy is fighting against<lb />time.<lb /><lb />What is a spanking? A spanking is a form of punishment administered to maniacs<lb />whom otherwise would be called children. I spank. Do you spank? If not, God bless<lb />your poor, confused soul. It seems crazy, but that is the only time I feel as though my<lb />voice actually has sound as I begin to fold my lip, curl my toes, and utter the famous<lb />phrase, oI am getting the belt! ? Doesn't it work for you? If you have found other<lb />alternatives to spanking your children, then please let me and the others who believe<lb />in a little tannin T from time to time know.<lb /><lb />Have you ever been sitting in your bedroom on the phone, talking to a potential<lb />victim? I called a boyfriend or girlfriend a victim because at each and every moment<lb />your children are looking for an opportunity to make this person feel absolutely dumb.<lb /><lb />ey will use everything in their power to prove to this new person that they know more<lb />than he/she. Children honestly believe, with all of the four ideas they hold in their<lb />brains, that they can compete with that of an adult. Here is a tip for handling this<lb />situation. Look the child straight in the face and say, odo me a favor, go in your room<lb />and think of what we can eat for dinner this weekend, and think of a Tun activity we<lb />can do. ? That is going to give you about 2 hours of time.<lb /><lb />So what have we learned el We have learned that children are simply that,<lb />children. But don't be fooled. They are smart, manipulative, beautiful, funny, and<lb />dangerous all at the same time. Remember to st armed and keep all potential victims<lb />away from the maniacs, and just as the maniacs begin to take the form of children ...<lb />it may be safe to introduce. CAUTION! AT YOUR OWN RISK!<lb /><lb />Tf you have a personal experience that you would like to share with The Single<lb />Parent Newsletter, forward all information to Modupe T Rouse at 600 Cascade Falls Lane<lb />Suite 202, Durham, NC 27713. If you are a<lb />Christian, the right thing to do<lb />is to follow the steps modeled by<lb />Christ: choose to love, humble<lb />yourself, suggest willingly, invite<lb />reconciliation, and offer forgive-<lb />ness.<lb /><lb />Put your trust in Jesus now<lb />and be right with God! It brings to<lb />complete ruin any and every<lb />human relationship.<lb /><lb />Gossip goes even beyond the<lb />essay's statement, oI maim with-<lb />out killing. ? While maiming is<lb />its usual result, gossip does<lb />indeed often lead to a killing,<lb />whether suicide or homicide.<lb /><lb />jes hard 10 bout than dont sll<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />of reputation, humiliation, and<lb />disgrace, not to mention the ruin<lb />of personal relationships, are<lb />frequently more painful than<lb />facing up to death.<lb /><lb />Gossip sows the evil seeds<lb />of doubt and distrust, even when<lb />it spreads the truth. . It has<lb />negative, destructive way of<lb />moving the truth about in places<lb /> and at times when it is harmful.<lb />All the more, when gossip<lb />spreads lies, the distrust and<lb />devastation are multiplied many<lb />times over.<lb /><lb />Unfortunately, to the gossip<lb />that spreads gossip, it is often of<lb />little concern whether the gossip<lb />is true or not. The fun of it is in<lb />spreading the swill. The joy of it<lb />is in smearing the hapless butt of<lb />whatever information or misip-<lb />formation is at hand.<lb /><lb />Full of insecurity, suffocated<lb />by inadequacy, poisoned by jeal-<lb />ousy and insane with envy, the<lb />gossip labels himself / herself<lb />seething with hatred, ill-wishing<lb />toward all targets.<lb /><lb />The essay left out one impor-<lb />tant, distressing category: church<lb />gossip. One would expect better<lb />from the house of God, from<lb />those who minister there and<lb />from those who worship there.<lb />Yet, gossip goes on happening<lb />there and everywhere.
