<lb />Insurance, Mr Spauld<lb /><lb />by Larry Reeves<lb />Tri-State Defender<lb /><lb />2 2k 2K 2K 2K K 3K 3<lb /><lb />There was time not<lb />long ago, when Blacks<lb />flocked to the fields to<lb /><lb />pick cotten. Today,<lb /><lb />Blacks no longer pick<lb />cotton, but their lives<lb />are no better than the<lb />days of segregation,<lb />and their children<lb />struggle to understand<lb />that poverty and de-<lb />spair aren't their only<lb />options in life.<lb />Deep within the Mississippi Delta are<lb />the intertwined lives of a group of<lb />Blacks who struggle to hold their<lb />world together in the face of dire<lb />poverty and acute despair.<lb />But one man, Reggie Barnes, super-<lb />intendent of the embattled West<lb />Tallahatchie school system refuses to<lb />allow their cured conditions which<lb />have not improved over 200 years<lb />despite the absence of segregation, to<lb />ruffle his aspirations of improving the<lb />educational opportunities for their<lb />children<lb />HBO this month aired a_ special<lb />report on Sept. 18 entitled Lalees<lb />Kin, an Oscar nominated documen-<lb />tury examining the lives of one<lb />desperate and impoverished family. It<lb />was this report that prompted this<lb />writer to travel to rural Tallahatchie<lb /><lb />County and examine for himself an<lb />area that time passed by.<lb /><lb />2k 2 ae 9 2 ok KK KK<lb /><lb />Lisa Ann stepped into a white<lb />bucket of warm water to bathe.<lb />At age 10, Lisa knows nothing<lb />about modern convinces such as<lb />bathtubs, sinks, toilets, showers<lb />or bathrooms.<lb /><lb />All she knows is this white<lb />bucket is where she washes the<lb />dirt from play off every day. And<lb />soap is often a novelty.<lb /><lb />The bucket is too small for her<lb />to sit in so she's forced to stand.<lb />Her think naked body gleams as<lb />she squeezes water from a towel<lb />over it. She rubs the towel over<lb />her body and the water in the<lb />bucket turns brown.<lb /><lb />Her mother, Alicia, by now has<lb />placed another bucket full of<lb />fresh water next to her. Lisa Ann<lb />steps into the second buck<lb />rinsing herself off. Alicia hands<lb />her a fresh towel and Lisa Ann<lb />starts drying herself off.<lb /><lb />This activity is repeated only<lb />twice a week. Next it Ts Lisa<lb />Ann's baby sister, Viola, 7. They<lb />bathe only twice a week because<lb />fresh water is not always avail-<lb />able. The county provides Lisa<lb />Ann's family and other families<lb />in the area with fresh water.<lb /><lb />Serving Eastern North Carolina Since 1981<lb /><lb />THE DELTA:<lb /><lb />A Place Time Left Behind<lb /><lb />They petition for it twice a week,<lb />and it Ts delivered by a truck in<lb />buckets the same size as those<lb />Lisa Ann and her sister bathe in.<lb />There is no plumbing and lim-<lb />ited electricity in Lisa Ann's<lb />home. The oven is wood burning<lb />and there is an outhouse just<lb />outside the back door.<lb /><lb />Lisa Ann has never seen a<lb />television program, although she<lb />has seen a television set. She has<lb />experienced radio and music in<lb />the projects, but she doesn't<lb />understand how it works, or<lb />where the music comes from.<lb />And the things most young<lb />people take for ranted, like<lb />buying new shoes and new<lb />clothing, going to movies, etc.<lb />are as foreign to Lisa Ann as the<lb />Russian language is to most<lb />Americans. But Lisa Ann is an<lb />American, a pretty African<lb />American youngster who lives<lb />and only knows what her imme-<lb />diate environment dictates, a<lb />condition that dates back 200<lb />years.<lb /><lb />The only change in her environ-<lb />ment has been slavery, a condi-<lb /><lb />tion she believes, she did not ©<lb /><lb />escape, but only changed its<lb />disguise.<lb /><lb />There are only two places that<lb />Lisa Ann looks forward to<lb />going...school five days a week,<lb />and church on Sunday. And<lb />school and church are the extent<lb />of her travels...both nearly two<lb />miles from her home.<lb /><lb />Roads by Lisa Ann's home are<lb />gravel, and in some places, dirt,<lb /><lb />which gets muddy during rains.<lb />The closet paved road is near<lb />Lisa Ann's school, but it runs<lb />only a mile in length. Then it<lb />turns into gravel again.<lb /><lb />During the days of slavery,<lb />which ended some 40 years ago,<lb />Tallahatchie County's main<lb />source of income was cotton<lb />farming. Today, cotton is till its<lb />primary industry. But things<lb />have changed, but surely not to<lb />the benefit of the county's Black<lb />residents.<lb /><lb />Blacks no longer pick the cotton.<lb />They have been replaced by<lb />technology...machinery that is<lb />faster and cheaper, and more<lb />efficient. The local mill does<lb />provide some employment for<lb />the areas few hundred Black<lb />residents, but it is only seasonal,<lb />and the pay ois good while it<lb />last, says Alicia.<lb /><lb />Welfare here is not only neces-<lb />sary, but it has become a way of<lb />life for many. Most of the 30<lb />homes around Lisa Ann's home<lb />are wooded and makeshift, and<lb />resembles many of the early<lb />pictures of Black hubbles in the<lb />early rural south. In Tallahatchie<lb />County, time has just stood still.<lb />There are plenty of children,<lb /><lb />some 65 in all under the age of<lb />17. Mothers and grandmothers<lb />live in the same homes with<lb />children, some as many as 12.<lb />But there are few men.<lb /><lb />There is no employment in the<lb />area accept seasonal, and most<lb />husbands are forced to abandon<lb />their families. Some return with<lb />money, many more don't.<lb />Alicia Ts husband, Ronnie, left<lb />work in Memphis eight years<lb />ago. He never returned and for<lb />the past six years, she has not<lb />heard from him.<lb /><lb />The only visible sign of contem-<lb />porary times is the school and its<lb />committed and determined prin-<lb />cipal, Reggie Barnes, a well<lb />spoken, well educated self-<lb />exiled educator who ventured<lb />into the Delta to improve its lot.<lb /> oI could have taught almost<lb />anywhere, the Tennessee State<lb />University graduate told this<lb />writer. But | felt an obligation<lb />to come here to Tallahatchie<lb />County to do my work, he said.<lb /> oIt Ts here | was most needed,<lb />and it Ts here | will accomplish<lb />what I set out to accomplish. <lb />For the past two years, Barnes<lb />has been entrenched in a fight to<lb />lift the school Ts rating. It has<lb />been on suspension due to poor<lb />and national exam results. If the<lb />school has scored poorly a third<lb />time, the state would have<lb />waved financial support.<lb /><lb /> oWe were in a desperate situa-<lb />tion, Barnes explained. oWe<lb />needed to improve our scores by<lb />at least one percentage point to<lb /><lb />keep our funding in tact. Well,<lb />with God's help, we did it. Our<lb />students (some 120 of them)<lb />rose to the occasion and we mad<lb />believers of the state educational<lb />officials. <lb /><lb />What Barnes made state officials<lb />believe is that poor Black<lb />Mississippi children could learn.<lb />And while the school improved<lb />only that one percentage point to<lb />a Grade 2.0, it Ts still progress,<lb />progress that has been missing<lb />for the past 30-odd years.<lb /><lb />For this first time in three<lb />decades, Tallahatchie County<lb />School has moved its students<lb />one step higher in the learning<lb />curb.<lb /><lb /> oIt Ts a slow process, said<lb />Barnes. oWe aren't afforded the<lb />things other schools<lb />get...computers, learning tools<lb />and new book. But perhaps now<lb />we will be able to access some<lb />new things. .<lb />The school is elementary and<lb />secondary all in one, and ends<lb />with a 12" grade diploma.<lb />However, over the years, the<lb />dropout rage has been stagger-<lb />ing, nearly 60 percent, but it has<lb />dropped significantly since<lb />Barnes took over in 1998.<lb /><lb /> oThere Ts still a great deal of<lb />apathy among parents, he said,<lb /> oand with good reason. They<lb />don't understand that an educa-<lb />tion is a way out of poverty. But<lb />there are few role models to<lb />show them, few examples they<lb />can relate to. Most parents suffer<lb />from a very poor perspective of<lb />life for Blacks who are still<lb />referred to themselves as<lb /> oColored or oNegro. <lb /><lb />Barnes continued; oIt Ts almost<lb />like stepping back in time.<lb />Victory from the Civil Right<lb />Movement has no here, had no<lb />impact at all. And while folk<lb />here have the right to vote, the<lb />vast majority of them don't<lb />because they fear their lifestyle<lb />will worsen in they do. Lisa<lb />Ann is a ogood student, says<lb />Barnes. Her grades have im-<lb />proved significantly. Once a<lb /><lb />ai<lb /><lb />child who failed in the firs grad,<lb />list now maintains a oB aver-<lb />age.<lb /><lb /> oBut Lisa Ann is only one<lb />success story. We need more,<lb />many more, said Barnes. oIt Ts a<lb />day-to-day process and a<lb />student-by-student situation. <lb /><lb />Barnes has had some success by<lb />holding the parents accountable,<lb />working with them and making<lb />better understanding their role in<lb />the educational process. And it Ts<lb />working although Barnes con-<lb />fesses, oThe road ahead is still<lb />filled with many holes. Barnes<lb />is aggressive and enthusiastic.<lb />He's a strong leader to a small<lb />professional staff, otoo small, <lb /><lb />he insists. oWe need more help<lb />down here and we need a new<lb />sense of commitment from<lb />Black educators in here in<lb />Mississippi and surrounding<lb />states. But that may be a goal<lb />Barnes may never achieve. Far<lb />too many African Americans<lb />educators have either lost their<lb />nationalistic sprit or never had it<lb />in the first place:<lb /><lb />Indeed, the Civil Rights<lb />Movement was conducted by a<lb /> owe generation because most<lb />Blacks had experience segrega-<lb />tion in one form or another. But<lb />Jim Crow today is clocked in<lb />various hidden forms that go<lb />unnoticed and unchallenged.<lb />That's because African<lb />Americans have been afforded<lb />new opportunities that they are<lb />afraid of losing, Barnes said.<lb /> oToo many have put themselves<lb />into a Catch-22 position, and<lb />have readily accepted it.<lb /><lb /> oThe battle of the 1960s is<lb />gone, he added, obut the war is<lb />far from over. All one has to do<lb />is come here to see what basics<lb />are needed. Perhaps they will<lb />then understand just how far we<lb />must still go. But in the mean-<lb />time, if we have to soldier it<lb />alone, we will. <lb /><lb />JUDGE GETS SUPPORT ..... The<lb />agency Ts auditing staff has shrunk by 29<lb />percent since 1995, while the number of tax<lb />returns has grown by 13 percent. oPeople<lb />who make more than $100,000 pay more _<lb />than 60 percent of the taxes and we need to<lb />focus there, Rossoti stated.<lb /><lb />Those who represent the biggest threats<lb />to the tax system will in the future be<lb />pressed more to pay up or go to prison, as<lb />well they should.<lb /><lb />a different perspective.<lb /><lb />THE MINORITY VOICE NEWSPAPER<lb /><lb />Here, we believe that the future of Blacks will depend upon their<lb />awareness of the world around them. One of the re-<lb /><lb />sults of the defeat of Black in-<lb /><lb />cumbent members of the House<lb />of Representatives, Earl Hilliard of Alaba-<lb />ma and Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, is<lb />the emergence of the view that Blacks are<lb />rejecting the oold confrontational Black<lb />leaders for onew moderate ones.<lb /><lb />This myth is being spun by people such<lb />as Cynthia Tucker, a conservative Black<lb />woman who heads the editorial section of<lb />the Atlanta Journal and Constitution<lb />newspaper, but it has gone far beyond<lb />that. During the recent Congressional<lb />Black Caucus annual legislative weekend,<lb />Rep. <lb />~ oy STRESS<lb /><lb />Oct 4, 2002- Oct 11, 2002<lb /><lb />ernment of President Thabo Mbeki has<lb />raised strong objections to a British intelli-<lb />gence dossier that suggests that an African<lb />country may have discussed selling uranium<lb />to Iraq for use in its efforts to develop<lb />nuclear weapons.<lb /><lb />British Prime Minister Tony Blair re-<lb />cently released an intelligence dossier on<lb />Iraq's alleged attempts to develop nuclear<lb />weapons.<lb /><lb />The report says: oThere is intelligence<lb />that Iraq has sought the supply of signifi-<lb />cant quantities of uranium from Africa. <lb /><lb />But South African Deputy Minister for<lb />Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad, dismissed the<lb />dossier's claims, calling the British allega-<lb />tions regarding African countries vague and<lb />lacking in substance. Gabon, Niger,<lb />Namibia and South Africa produce uranium<lb />although only South Africa produces weap-<lb />ons-grade uranium.<lb /><lb />According to the British prime minister,<lb />if Iraq gets its hands on the necessary com-<lb />ponents, it could produce a nuclear weapon<lb />in one to two years.<lb /><lb />gested the Democratic Republic of Congo<lb />(DRC) was the most likely African source<lb />of smuggled uranium. The Congo has been<lb />embroiled in conflict for the past three years<lb />and control of the country Ts mineral reserves<lb />has been in the hands of rebel groups and<lb />warlords.<lb /><lb />Anumber of other African countries also<lb />have deposits of the ore, but the British re-<lb />port does not mention from which African<lb />countries Irag may have tried to secure the<lb />uranium.<lb /><lb />Mr. Pahad was adamant South Africa had<lb />never contemplated selling uranium to Iraq.<lb /> oOur information is that we have not been<lb /><lb />requested to sell uranium to Iraq. I can state<lb />categorically we have not. he said.<lb /><lb />He added that South Africa has strict leg-<lb />islation controlling the sale of nuclear ma-<lb />terial and it would be difficult for anyone<lb />from South Africa "even private compa-<lb />nies- to sell uranium.<lb /><lb />Mr. Pahad pointed out that the Interna-<lb />tional Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has<lb /><lb />already indicated that the British report tas<lb /><lb />A Financial Times of London report sug- |<lb /><lb /> TELL SOMEBODY<lb /><lb />no substance. The IAEA insists that it ts<lb />keeping an eye on stores of uranium that<lb />could be used for nuclear weapons in Af-<lb />rica "and they would know if any went miss-<lb />ing.<lb /><lb />Mr. Pahad has called on the British gov-<lb />emment to come forward with any infor-<lb />mation they may have on alleged Iraqi ef-<lb />forts to secure uranium in Africa.<lb /><lb />In early September, South Africa signed<lb />the oProtocol Additional to the Safeguard<lb />Agreement with the TARA. The treaty makes<lb />it mandatory for all non-nuclear weapon<lb />states parties to conclude comprehensive<lb />safeguard agreements with the [AEA and<lb />put all of their nuclear material under sate-<lb />guards.<lb /><lb />South Africa ts also the only country to<lb />have developed nuclear weapons and then<lb />destroyed them before signing up for the<lb />Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The purpose<lb /><lb />of this letter is to inform you of<lb /><lb />the wonderful opportunity that<lb />you may have to be a part of this<lb />exciting project. Under the direc-<lb />tion of Dr. Trevathan along with<lb />Melissa Spain of The Greater<lb />Greenville Foundation, we have<lb /><lb />formed an advisory committee in<lb /><lb />which we are encouraging vari-<lb />ous citizens and business leaders<lb />to join us in this endeavor.<lb />This project includes the pur-<lb />chase of property which is<lb />presently undeveloped and<lb />forms a triangle between<lb />. Davenport Street, Tyson Street,<lb />and Farmville Blvd, in the West<lb />Greenville area. Currently, while<lb />we as a committee are working<lb />to secure funding for the com-<lb />pletion of this project, the prop-<lb />erty is secured with an option to<lb />purchase. The owners had<lb />placed the site on the market for<lb />development. As visioned by Dr.<lb />Trevathan, this left room for a<lb />wonderful opportunity for the<lb />creation of a garden or floral<lb />park in honor of an outstanding<lb />community citizen, = Mrs.<lb />Beatrice Maye.<lb />Because of your interest as a<lb />community leader and citizen of<lb />the greater Greenville area, we<lb />hope you will be a part of<lb />making this project become a<lb />reality. We would like for you to<lb />please consider pledging your<lb />support for this project by<lb />contributing a financial gift to go<lb />towards the $11,000 price of<lb />purchase. The foundation will<lb />recognize gifts of $500.00 or<lb />greater by placing names of<lb />contributors on a memorial<lb />which will be permanently<lb />placed on the floral garden park<lb />property.<lb />The Beatrice Maye Floral Park<lb />Project, once purchased, will be<lb />gifted to the City of Greenville<lb />and maintained by The<lb />Recreation and Parks<lb /><lb />Department. Our option on this<lb /><lb />roperty expires on August 20,<lb />2002, therefore we will need<lb />your commitments as quickly as<lb />possible.<lb /><lb />Sincerely,<lb />Melissa Spain, Executive<lb />Director The Greater Greenville<lb />Foundation<lb /><lb />Sunday, October 20,2002,<lb />2o'clock pm the<lb />Ceremony,unveiling the<lb />sign,"The Beatrice Maye<lb />Garden. This peddling<lb />of human beings, and untold<lb />number of African men, women<lb />and children, between the 15"<lb />and 19" centuries cost hundreds<lb />of lives and robbed Africa of her<lb />most valuable natural resource,<lb />her people.<lb /><lb />What has always been clear is<lb /><lb />that Europeans implemented,<lb />organized and fueled the slave<lb />trade for their own greed and<lb />prosperity. The part that has<lb />always been unclear is the<lb />involvement of African leaders<lb />in assisting in the capture,<lb />tion and exploitation of<lb />millions of Africans.<lb />Oguin echoed the Republic of<lb />Benin President Mathieu<lb />Kerekou's sentiment expressed<lb />at a 1999 reconciliation confer-<lb />ence: "We owe to ourselves<lb />never to forget these absent ones<lb />standing among us who did not<lb />die their own deaths. We must<lb />acknow and share respon-<lb />sibility in the humiliations."<lb />said that admitting guilt is<lb />the first step in reconciliation, to<lb />roe ben orl inillions from<lb />country's<lb />hands.<lb /><lb />"{ think that's a very important<lb /><lb />move on his part," said A. Peter<lb />bailey, a lecturer and editor of<lb />Vital Issues: A Journal of<lb />African American Speeches.<lb />"There has been a tendency to<lb />blur over the pivotal role that<lb />some African chiefs played in<lb />the enslavement of African peo-<lb />ple. It is a good sign to hear<lb />someone acknowledge it and<lb />express regret over what hap-<lb />pened."<lb /><lb />Originally called Dahomey,<lb />Benin changed its name after<lb />gaining independence from<lb />France in 1960. A country of<lb />about 6.5 million, it is between<lb />Togo, Burkina Faso, Niger and<lb />Nigeria in West Africa. It is<lb />about the size of the state of<lb />Pennsylvania and borders the<lb />Atlantic Ocean. That, said<lb />Oguin, allowed its country to be<lb />used as a major port for the<lb />slave trade. Slaves were<lb />marched down a path that cuts<lb />through its country, branded or<lb />otherwise marked, and held at<lb />holding camps in the port of<lb />Ouidah, now part of a toured<lb />slave route in Benin, said Oguin.<lb />From this port city, thousand of<lb />slaves were stripped, chained in<lb />pairs by the ankles and taken by<lb />canoes, at night, to slaving<lb />vessels anchored in the harbors.<lb />For this assistance and for<lb />sometimes even providing the<lb />cargo for the slave merchants,<lb />Oguin says they are sorry.<lb /><lb />The meeting shed light on<lb />rumors in innuendoes that have<lb />plagues relationships between<lb /><lb />Africans and<lb />Americans, according to some<lb />observers. This basis for mis-<lb />trust, according to Oguin, keeps<lb />African Americans from benefit-<lb />ing from an economic relation-<lb />ship with the continent.<lb /><lb />"There are many people who<lb />have negative ideas about<lb />Africa, said Oguin.<lb /><lb />"Nowadays, many people are<lb />rushing to the continent because<lb />of the enormous opportunities it<lb />presents. In this move, African<lb />Americans should not stay out<lb />while they have a special rela-<lb />tionship - a historical connection<lb />- and blood links with Africa."<lb />For over a decade, Benin has<lb />been noted for its political<lb />stability and encourages a mar-<lb />ket economy that fuels its eco-<lb />nomic expansions. However,<lb />like Ghana, it courts the atten-<lb />tion of African Americans to<lb /><lb />African<lb /><lb />spearhead development in a<lb />country that has seen years of<lb />painfully slow growth. They feel<lb />that ignoring the damage in-<lb />flicted by slavery would impede<lb />the peace and reconciliation they<lb />seek.<lb /><lb />"No amount of money can fix<lb />anything that has already hap-<lb />pened," said Oguin. "This apol-<lb />ogy is from the heart. And that<lb />is much more valuable than<lb />money because of they psycho-<lb />logical impact. Once we have<lb />that confidence that we have<lb />spiritually addressed those con-<lb />cerns, then the relationship in<lb />business, trade and culture will<lb />follow and become _ larger,<lb />stronger and long-lasting."<lb /><lb />"The apology is too late. said<lb />Charlene Crafton, a 30-<lb />soemthing local government<lb />worker. She spoke for many in<lb />her Prince George's County com-<lb />munity. "The damage has been<lb />done. The apology cannot com-<lb />pensate for everything we've<lb />been through."<lb /><lb />"I believe in retribution. said<lb />lecturer Bailey. "And I do believe<lb />that Africa, as a continent. has<lb />paid a severe price for what<lb />those chiefs did. Now both of us<lb />will only advance together. It is<lb />to the advance of Africans and<lb />African Americans that we de-<lb />velop a serious, mutually benefi-<lb />cial relationship."<lb /><lb />Oguin announced plans for the<lb />first annual international festi-<lb />val, "Gospel and Roots. from<lb />Oct. 27 to Nov. 3. Here is the real Jesse<lb />Jackson: the man who turned<lb />racial grievances into a breath-<lb /><lb />taking money machine. With<lb />Shakedown, Jesse Jackson is<lb />finally exposed.<lb /><lb />In Shakedown, you'll learn:<lb /><lb />*****how Jackson exploited<lb />and lied about the assassination<lb />of Martin Luther King Jr. Back<lb />then he lied about cradling the<lb />dying King in his arms, and his<lb />dishonesty hasnt let up since.<lb /><lb />*****about Jacksons previously<lb />unreported affliation with one of<lb />Chicagos most notorious street<lb /><lb />gangs.<lb /><lb />*****Where Jackson learned<lb />politics from card-carrying<lb />Communists.<lb /><lb />*****#how Jackson make him-<lb />self a Reverend (without creden-<lb />tials)<lb /><lb />****#the truth behind the self-<lb />perpetuated myth of growing up<lb />poor and a victim of racism.<lb /><lb />*****how Jackson raided corpo-<lb />rate America in the name of the<lb />poor but really to enrich himself<lb />and his cronies.<lb /><lb />****#*the history of sexual she-<lb />nanigans that made Jackson the<lb />perfect minister to President Bill<lb />Clinton.<lb /><lb />*#***about Jacksons corrupt<lb />mixture of official diplomacy<lb />and unofficial business with<lb />African dictators.<lb /><lb />**#**the inspiring story of a<lb />CEO who stood up to Jacksons<lb />bullying and won.<lb /><lb />Today Jackson leads his racism<lb />witch-hunt through corporate<lb />America, bilking frightened<lb />CEOs of big money. Through it<lb />all Jackson has used the same<lb />basic techniques of intimidation,<lb />coercion, and protection-refined<lb />by his assoiciation with<lb />Chicagos most brutal street<lb />gang. Jacksons shakedown<lb />technique has enriched his fam-<lb />ily, steered billions of dollars of<lb />business to his friends, and<lb />launched a_ political dynasty.<lb />Shakedown is the explosive<lb />expose Jesse Jackson has long<lb />deserved.<lb /><lb />Excerpted from the book:<lb />Shakedown which can be pur-<lb />chase from Barnes & Nobles.<lb /><lb />Note: Kenneth Timmerman, an inves-<lb />tigative reporter with more than 20<lb />years of experience, has written for<lb />many magazines and newspapers,<lb />including Time, Newsweek, Wall<lb />Street Journal, Readers Digest and the<lb />American Spectator. You may<lb />have asked yourself questions<lb />and just didn't know where to<lb />find an anwser. Hence the title '<lb />In My Spirit". You may not<lb />agree with what I say (We do<lb />have freedom of speech in<lb />America) and if by chance you<lb />think | am talking about you, "I<lb />AM". Moving On ! In My Spirit?<lb /><lb />The Blind<lb />Leading the Blind ! ! !<lb /><lb />| really wanted to be careful in<lb />hopes of not offending someone<lb /><lb />but as we all know, the time is<lb />drawing nigh and the day is at<lb />hand. On one ocassion the<lb />disciples came to Jesus and said,<lb />Knowest thou that the Pharisees<lb />were offened, after they heard<lb />this saying<lb /><lb />( Matt. 15: 7-9 ).<lb /><lb />Jesus answered, Let them alone;<lb />they be blind leaders of the<lb />blind. And if the blind lead the<lb />blind, both shall fall into the<lb />ditch. | happened to witness a<lb />modern day Pharisee in action. |<lb />just got to bring it home. One<lb />preacher was not satisfied with<lb />the. service he received and<lb />picked up his telephone and<lb />called this company. Not even<lb />knowing who he was talking to<lb />he began to curse, that's right |<lb />said curse, the person out on the<lb />other end. Now, he is leading a<lb />church.<lb /><lb />The Blind Leading the Blind.<lb />This same preacher is the same<lb />one that don't pay his bills. This<lb />same preacher was known to<lb />have committed adultrery. This<lb />same preacher gave himself a<lb />title as LEADER. This has been<lb />"In My Spirit". We have new<lb />converts who sit under these<lb />modern day Pharisees and are<lb />headed for the ditch. Saints!<lb />Pray for our new born. | could<lb />tell you more, but, Nuff Said. |<lb /><lb />said before that we all make<lb />mistakes but these false teachers<lb />are going to have to be exposed.<lb />Are we ready for real Evangelist<lb />who will call them out? Not<lb />preach for fame and fortune! Yes<lb /><lb />e offended, but get it Right. In<lb />vain they do worship and teach<lb />doctrines. They speak with lips<lb />but their hearts are far from<lb />HIM. Nuff Said. When the Spirit<lb />of the Lord rests in you and you<lb />reach the time of leadership<lb />there are some things that will<lb />not come out of your mouth.<lb />Remember my children, read the<lb />Word for yourself. The Lord will<lb />send a true servant your way.<lb />We do have true leaders and<lb />they should be honered, but not<lb />praised. What's done in the dark,<lb />Will come to the light. ( Luke<lb />6:45 ) A good man will speak<lb />good things and an evil man will<lb />say that which is evil because its<lb />in the heart. Yes, the blind are<lb />leading the blind. Even the<lb />President, in my opinion, lead-<lb />ing the nation toward war with-<lb />out an Physica confrontation<lb />from Sadaam. When will we<lb />take the blinders off. Then followed the<lb />benediction, C-uncilsomen Rose Glover and Mildred Council were on hand for the Memorial Service<lb /><lb />'Barbershop'<lb /><lb />Hilarious or Hurtful?<lb /><lb />Many District residents contend<lb />that they types of conversations<lb />that go on in barbershops are<lb />reflected in the controversial<lb />move, "Barbershop," and that<lb />barbershops has no sacred sub-<lb />jects.<lb /><lb />The Rev. Douglas Moore, a<lb />former mayoral candidate and<lb />pastor of Elijah United States<lb />Methodist Church in Poolesville,<lb />Md., and college classmate of<lb />the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King<lb />at Boston College, said about the<lb />controversy, oI don't think it's<lb />that serious.<lb /><lb />The Rev. Moore, a noted civil<lb />rights worker, was referring to<lb />the talk surrounding the movie,<lb />which isn't warm admiration for<lb />a brilliant film, but outrage.<lb />Many civil rights advocates - the<lb />Rev. Jess L. Jackson, the Rev. Al<lb />Sharpton and the Rev. Dr.<lb />Bernice King (Dr. King's daugh-<lb />ter) - are outraged by some of<lb />controversial dialogue in the<lb />movie.<lb /><lb />Since its release Sept. 13,<lb />"Barbershop" has been at the top<lb />of the box office for two weeks<lb />and has grossed about $34<lb />million. It stars rapper actor Ice<lb />Cube as the inheritor of a<lb />barbershop on Chicago's South<lb />Side. Cedric the Entertainer<lb />plays an old, cantankerous bar-<lb /><lb />ber who jokes about Rosa Parks<lb />and Dr. King's alleged promiscu-<lb /><lb />ity.<lb /><lb />His character, Eddie Bishop, is<lb />the voice of wisdom in the<lb />movie. However, some moviego-<lb />ers are concerned by some of his<lb />contentious remarks, which have<lb />divided Black opinion about the<lb />integrity of "Barbershop."<lb />During one scene, Bishop tells<lb />the patrons, "All Rosa Parks did<lb />was sit on her ass." He also<lb />expresses, "Martin Luther King<lb />wasn't nothing but a ho. For the<lb />King holiday, we would take the<lb />day off and get our freak on."<lb />Dr. Bernice King was livid. "The<lb />Bible says, we are accountable<lb />for every word we speak out of<lb />our mouth," she said in a recent<lb />interview with Ed Gordon, host<lb />of "BET Tonight." Kings, who<lb />aw the move at an Atlanta<lb /><lb />theater, said she was absolutely<lb />shocked when she heard her<lb />father's image being degraded,<lb />and was further disturbed when<lb />the audience responded with<lb />laughter at Bishop's remarks.<lb />"The remarks were very degrad-<lb />ing, debasing and not neces-<lb />sary," she said.<lb /><lb />"Somebody has to take a stand<lb />for right."<lb /><lb />Sharpton, Jackson and King are<lb />calling for MGM to remove<lb />those disparaging insults from<lb />the movie. As a precedent to<lb />their demands, Jackson and<lb />Sharpton referred to Warner<lb />Bros. Removing scenes that<lb />included the World Trade Center<lb />in the movie, "Collateral<lb />Damage." It was stated that<lb />keeping the buildings in the<lb />move would be insensitive in<lb />lieu of the attacks on those<lb />buildings.<lb /><lb />Jackson and Sharpton also re-<lb />ferred to Sony agreeing to<lb />remove lyrics from Michael<lb />Jackson's songs, "Dangerous"<lb />after a Jewish group protested to<lb />language they claimed was of-<lb />fensive.<lb /><lb />Dr. Leonard Smith, senior pastor<lb />of Mt. Zion church in Arlington,<lb />Va. agrees, "Whenever African<lb />Americans are given national<lb />and international platforms, we<lb />must be careful about what we<lb />say, "Dr. Smith said. "The things<lb />said are heightened when cast<lb />into a national or international<lb />spotlight and for some people,<lb />some things just aren't funny.<lb /><lb />When we jokingly attack our<lb /><lb />historical figures, it helps to<lb />increase others not honoring our<lb />leaders."<lb /><lb />But while Jackson, Sharpton<lb />and King make a fight over this<lb />sensitive issue, other District<lb />residents question whether it's a<lb /><lb />big deal.<lb /><lb />Rev. Moore, said that very<lb />explicit conversations occur in<lb />the barbershop. However, he<lb />explains, "the very nature of the<lb />barbershop is, what is said in a<lb />barbershop stays in the barber-<lb />shop." Exposing those com-<lb />ments that go on in the men's<lb />club (the barbershop) may be<lb />where Bishop in the move,<lb />crossed the line suggested<lb />Moore.<lb /><lb />Although the manner in which<lb />Bishop may have expressed his<lb /><lb />photo by faith May<lb /><lb />Hilaiongor A uettal<lb /><lb />feelings about Rosa Parks may<lb />have been abrasive, the informa-<lb />tion he delivered was historically<lb />accurate, Parks was not the first<lb />person to be arrested for refus-<lb />ing to give up a seat, according<lb />to historical archives. Many who<lb />had gone before her simply did<lb />not have an organization behind<lb />them as Parks did to bring<lb />national attention to their arrest.<lb />One of many boycotts, which<lb />took place before Park's historic<lb />even was, then Baton Rouge bus<lb />boycott in 1953, headed by the<lb />Rev. T.J. Jemison.<lb /><lb />"All the information has not<lb />been written about the move-<lb />ment," said Rev. Moore.<lb /><lb />MGM was not unavailable for<lb />an interview, but provided the<lb />following statement.<lb /><lb />"In Barbershop, T a character<lb />makes comments about Rosa<lb />Parks and other leader of the<lb />civil rights movement. It's only<lb />that one character's opinion,<lb />though. No one else in the film<lb />agrees with him, and it's not an<lb />opinion shared by the film itself,<lb />the filmmakers, or MGM<lb />Pictures. That same character,<lb />Eddie, also says "You can say<lb />anything; you want in a barber-<lb />shop.' For the characters in the<lb />film and in that place, no subject<lb />is off limits, and the filmmakers<lb />were trying to be true to that.<lb /> Barbershop T presents a realistic<lb />portrait of the kinds of discus-<lb />sions happening in barbershops<lb />and other gathering places<lb />across the country.<lb /><lb />The producers of the film even<lb />went further earlier this week<lb />and apologized for the film's<lb />barbs about Parks and King.<lb />Rev. Jackson said, while he's<lb />please for the apology, he wants<lb />the jokes cut from future DVD<lb />and video editions of the hit<lb />movie.<lb /><lb />Producers Bob Teitel and<lb />George Tillman told The<lb />Associated Press that they had<lb />apologized to Jackson on behalf<lb />of everyone involved with the<lb />film.<lb /><lb />"| completely did not mean to<lb />offend anyone," Tillman said.<lb />"The apology is a step in the<lb />right direction, T Rev. Jackson<lb />told the AP, but added that he<lb />will "keep appealing to them" to<lb />do the right thing.<lb /><lb />Hard workers are part of our electric co-op.<lb /><lb />Work doesn Tt seem to fit into a 4@hour week any longer.<lb /><lb />That's why you can count on us 24/7, for all kinds of powerful connections.<lb /><lb />North Carolina's<lb />electric cooperatives<lb /><lb />pA<lb />Touchstone Energy<lb /><lb />Lifeline: Edifioation of<lb />Q New Generation<lb /><lb />WHERE DID TEENS COME FROM?<lb /><lb />Did you know that 100 years ago, oTEENAGERS did not exist? The<lb />term teenager didn Tt come into common use until about 1940. And there<lb />is a reason for that.<lb />Kids worked. In 1900 only 6 percent of 17-years-olds in the U.S.<lb />graduated high school. Public education just wasn Tt a priority. Most<lb />youth spent the bulk of their time with family or in the adult world. There<lb />was no oyouth culture. No movies, MTV or malls.<lb />n the 20's, high schools revamped to attract more students, adapting their traditional, scholarly education<lb />to include practical classes like bookkeeping and home economics. It paid off: By 1930, almost half the<lb />teen population were high school students, and the trend continued upward. More than ever, teens were<lb />ripening in an environment composed almost entirely of their peers. High school was now a full-out<lb />teenage social experience.<lb /><lb />Savvy businessmen were quick to pick up on this emerging demographic. In the o40s,<lb />advertisements aimed directly at the teen market began to appear for household furnishings, hope chests<lb />and fashions. The products were wholesome-an extension of, say, home economics in school-preparing<lb />youths for adulthood. But money was clearly bottom-line. The onset of the oteenager had everything<lb />to do with their increase in buying power. As teen numbers and economic clout swelled, so did an<lb />onslaught of rock on roll culture and delinquency. Youth culture rocked the entire world: the<lb />entertainment industry, the universities, the government. The atmosphere of protest gave rise to gangs.<lb />beatniks, rockers and hippies, bent on casting off constraint, high on the heady fumes of hedonism. "<lb /><lb />Parents who turned in their Bibles to scriptures like Romans 1:30 and II Timothy 3:1-2, which<lb />describe disobedience as being a sign of the end of the world. had a pretty good case to make. While<lb />these youths spoke out against the mistakes of the previous generation (which had only succeeded in<lb />bringing the world to the brink of nuclear annihilation), the only alternative they seemed to offer was a<lb />self-destructive one. ;<lb /><lb />Now, we are a full generation beyond the development of modern youth culture. The students<lb />who protested at colleges around the country were absorbed into the system and are now the professors<lb />and administrators. The teens who once declared WAR on parental control are the parents of today.<lb />Consider:The average parent of an adolescent in his mid to late teenage years is between 35 and 45<lb />years old, which means they were born in the 50s or 60s; and that they went to high school roughly<lb />between 1971 and 1985. Pretty tumultuous-and influential-years in the history of American youth.<lb /><lb />So, what do you do if you Tve grown up REBELLING against authority, against parents and<lb />everything they stood for, and suddenly realize one day that you're a parent?<lb /><lb />The answer is very telling.<lb /><lb />- poetrycom<lb /><lb />OWINGS MILLS, MD (USA) - The International Library of Poetry has announced that $58,000.00<lb />in prizes will be awarded this year in the International Open Poetry Contest. As a result, the largely<lb />partisan Senate logjam continues<lb />after almost five weeks.<lb /><lb />A spokeswoman for Senate Ma-<lb />jority Leader Tom Daschle (D-<lb />S.D.) repeated his pledge that the<lb />Senate would keep trying for a deal<lb />even as it moves on to other issues<lb />such as the Iraq use-of-force resolu-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />President Bush has threatened<lb />to veto the homeland security leg-<lb />islation unless it permits him<lb />greater power to hire, fire and<lb />move around the proposed agen-<lb />cy Ts 170,000 workers.<lb /><lb />Arafat asks Bush to bar<lb />relocating U.S. embassy<lb /><lb />JERUSALEM " Palestinian<lb />leader Yasser Arafat appealed yes-<lb />terday to one of his toughest critics<lb /> " President Bush " to block a<lb />USS. law that calls for moving the<lb />American embassy in Israel from<lb />Tel Aviv to disputed Jerusalem.<lb /><lb />Bush signed the bill into law,<lb />but views it as advisory rather than<lb />mandatory, and says he has no<lb />plans to move the embassy to Jeru-<lb />salem, where Palestinians seek to<lb />establish a capital in the eastern<lb />part of the city.<lb /><lb />In another development, Ar-<lb />afat Ts Fatah movement has<lb />dropped the idea of prodding the<lb />Palestinian leader to relinquish<lb />some power by appointing a prime<lb />minister.<lb /><lb />The Fatah campaign had been<lb />the most serious political challenge<lb />to Arafat in years, but the effort<lb />was sidetracked during Israel's<lb /><lb />10-day siege of Arafat's compound,<lb />which ended earlier this week.<lb /><lb />By RON WALTERS<lb /><lb />As planning for the war against<lb />Iraq proceeds, one wonders whether<lb />the planners are considering what<lb />we know wars produce as ocollateral<lb />damage on a number of fronts.<lb /><lb />First, they should consider the<lb />magnitude of the sacrifice by Ameri-<lb />cans who need such things as pre-<lb />scription drugs, a Social Security<lb />safety net, college loans, Medicaid<lb />and Medicare, election reform fund-<lb />ed, sufficient affordable housing and<lb />strategic support for the budget of<lb />those states whose economies have<lb />gone into the tank. Funds needed for<lb />these priorities will be spent on a<lb />questionable war with a so-called<lb /> oenemy who does not even threaten<lb />the basic security of the United<lb />States. Meanwhile, the direct-not<lb />indirect-interests of Americans will<lb />be threatened by the funds that are<lb />squandered on this misadventure.<lb /><lb />Then, they should consider the<lb />cost of war and at the same time con-<lb />sider the recent report from the U.S.<lb />Census Bureau, which said that 1.3<lb />million more Americans have slipped<lb />into officially defined poverty, tak-<lb />ing the poverty rate to 11.7 percent.<lb /><lb />This is an indication that the state of<lb />the U.S. economy "not just the stock<lb />market "is in dire need of attention.<lb /><lb />And what does George Bush want<lb />to do? He wants to slow down spend-<lb />ing to save money for the war,<lb />instead of speeding up spending to<lb />bail out the economy.<lb /><lb />Congressional Democrats estimate<lb />that the cost of an Iraq invasion and<lb />occupation will be at least $200 bil-<lb />lion, taken out of an economy that<lb />the Congressional Budget Office<lb />says is already running a river of<lb />debt. It estimates that the debt will<lb />amount to $1.7 trillion in 10 years,<lb />partially as a result of the Republi-<lb />can tax cut, and this debt will be<lb />added to that which already exists<lb />and is growing by leaps and bounds.<lb />Where are all those folks on the<lb />Right who were calling for a bal-<lb />anced budget? When Bob Dole was<lb />the Majority leader in the Senate, in<lb />1996 he also was the leader of the<lb />band trying to secure a balanced<lb />budget. But you haven Tt heard from<lb />him lately on this issue. So, the war<lb />economy is now embargoing funds<lb />that will be needed for domestic<lb />human needs far into the future.<lb /><lb /> oCollateral damage will be done<lb />by killing thousands, perhaps<lb /><lb />Collateral damage and the Iraq War<lb /><lb />hundreds of thousands of the people<lb />of Iraq-a cost of war that no one<lb />talks about. Who will take<lb />responsibility for the human car-<lb />nage that might take place, the bitter<lb />memories that this will generate<lb />against the United States, and how<lb />will we explain to the succeeding<lb />generations of Americans that Iraqis<lb />will grow up attempting to use vio-<lb />lence to insure that they will be able<lb />to live in peace and security? Our<lb />planners act as if America is such a<lb />power in the world that there will be<lb />no cost for the aggressive actions<lb />against others.<lb /><lb />The true cost of oregime change <lb />is not simply in replacing Saddam<lb />Hussein, but insuring that another<lb />Saddam or someone worse does not<lb />rise to replace him. Therefore, it<lb />means destroying his infrastructure<lb />and the people who support it. This<lb />step turns the United States into an<lb />occupier in the region, joining Israel<lb />on the ground acting out the role of<lb />imperial agent of the West.<lb /><lb />The real name for the action<lb />against Iraq would be oaggression, <lb />a term used to indicate that one<lb />nation, for its own reasons, initiates<lb />actions against another, just as Sad-<lb />dam Hussein did against Kuwait or<lb /><lb />Yemen. Aggression, especially by<lb /><lb />Oct 4, 2002 - Oct 11, 2002<lb /><lb />global power, is a violation of inter-<lb />national law and even if done by<lb />y political sanction from the<lb />United Nation, it violates the spirit of<lb />international law and global civility.<lb />It strikes a dagger at the heart of cre-<lb />ating an international system where<lb />nations respect law and civil proce-<lb />dures more than naked power. So,<lb />the ocollateral damage in this case<lb />will be the principles of conflict reso-<lb />lution for an evolving global system.<lb />Finally, no one talks about the<lb /> ocollateral damage of sending<lb />American soldiers to fight a war that<lb />has the stink of politics all over it,<lb />for oil or for the re-election of a pres-<lb />ident. For just as Vietnam soured a<lb />generation of Americans on such<lb />adventures, the potential of loosing<lb />thousands of lives for nothing also<lb />may contribute to the adoption of an<lb />isolationist mood in the aftermath.<lb />With American interests exploding<lb />globally, none of us can afford that.<lb />But as we ignore the realities of this<lb />and other collateral damage this pol-<lb />icy could cause, we all become com-<lb />plicit in the result.<lb /><lb /> " Ron Walters is Distinguished<lb />Leadership Scholar, director of the<lb />African American Leadership Insti-<lb />tute and professor of government<lb />and politics at the University of<lb />Maryland College Park.<lb /><lb />By ARIZONA LEWIS<lb /><lb />WASHINGTON " The 38<lb />members of the Congressional<lb />Black Caucus issued a joint<lb />statement Thursday caution-<lb />ing against a rush into George<lb />Bush Ts use of military force.<lb /><lb />Rep.
