Brown<lb />What happens when a twenty-six year old unarmed man is pulled to the ground by and undeq<lb />the control of a large canine police officer and is then brutally shot more than six times to the<lb />head and torso by multiple local and county law enforcement officers? Apparently, nothing!<lb />Three months ago, during the early morning hours of America Ts tax filing deadline of April<lb />15th, Tarik Rodgers, an alleged kidnapping suspect was shot and killed on the streets of<lb />Williamston, North Carolina, under the watchful eyes of several witnesses. Although two<lb />officers have been suspend~d owith pay ? and there is reportedly an ongoing investigation by<lb />the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the Rodgers family has been given no reason for the<lb />death of their son except a death certificate.<lb /><lb />With the recent wave of unfettered police brutality incidences throughout the country, some<lb />of which have been captured by amateur video and aired on our local and national television<lb />channels, there is little public confidence in the sanctity of such SBI investigations. In the<lb />Rodgers case, with rumors of cross pollination of former SBI personnel on the Martin County<lb />Sheriff's payroll and a relative of the Williamston Police Chief currently working in the SBI<lb />office, the appearance of impropriety and the possible conflict of interest reeks of the need for<lb />the involvement of the State Attorney General Ts office or the Federal Bureau of Investigation.<lb />With the upcoming elections (DA, Sheriff, County Commissioner, etc.) in November 2002,<lb /><lb />the citizens of Martin County must hold the responsible parties accountable for this tragedy.<lb /><lb />Our dark history during the pre-Civil Rights era has taught us that we cannot allow the TRUTH<lb />surrounding the death of Tarik Rodgers to be swept under the carpet, wherever. it may lead.<lb />In the case of Tarik Rodgers, it is not only for the sake of his family that we need to find out<lb />the truth tal happened, but also for the well-being of our own families and the entire<lb />society at large<lb /><lb />It is only when we look for justice above the interest of the individual, be they law enforcement<lb />officers, elected officials, or the common man alike, can we be assured that the of all<lb />people will be safeguarded. We pray only that the tragic death of Tarik Rodgers will force us<lb />all to hold up our own mirrors of accountability and a fair review of the facts by an<lb />impartial fact finder and the prompt disclosure to the Rodgers family.<lb /><lb /> "<lb /><lb />caememimeanies<lb /><lb />$H#x PO<lb />ON AFATTIIANSAYD<lb /><lb />oy dnouD wNIWTONWO<lb /><lb />AUYWYEIT YWANAOLC<lb /><lb /></p>

          <lb />A Victorious Christian<lb />Greetings,<lb /><lb />In our daily walk with<lb />Christ, we as Christians are<lb />faced with much opposition<lb />from our opponent Satan.<lb />We are in a constant battle<lb />against the forces of his<lb />kingdom.<lb /><lb />From the time he was ex-<lb />pelled from heaven, he has<lb />been at war with God<lb /><lb />through mankind. He is<lb />constantly trying to take<lb />what belongs to God. He<lb />hinders people from coming<lb />to Christ. He invades the<lb />lives of people through de-<lb /><lb />sion, depression, obsession,<lb /><lb />suppression, regression,<lb />etc.. His purpose is to kill,<lb /><lb />steal and destroy. We are<lb /><lb />helpless against trying to<lb />fight the devil with our<lb />flesh. He is a. spirit;<lb />therefore, we must fight him<lb />in the spirit. We must en-<lb />gage in spiritual warfare.<lb />This is why Jesus came into<lb />the world. First, to redeem<lb />us back to God after the fall<lb />of Adam and Eve and to<lb />destroy the works .of the<lb />devil. The Bible tells us in<lb />I] John 3:8 " He that com-<lb />miteth sin is the devil; for<lb />the devil sinneth from the<lb />beginning. For this purpose<lb />the Son of God was mani-<lb />fested, that he might destro<lb />the works of the devil.<lb />Jesus spoiled principalities<lb />and powers. He made a<lb />show of them openly, tri-<lb />umphing over them in it<lb /><lb /> (Colossians 2:15). He was<lb /><lb />triumphant over death, hell<lb />and the grave. If Jesus<lb />has provided us with all this<lb />victory and everything we<lb />need to be overcomers, why<lb />are there so many Christians<lb />living defeated lives? Why<lb />can't victory be gained over<lb />minute things? Why do we<lb />constantly battle with an<lb />enemy that's already de-<lb />feated? You must stay the<lb />course," said Min.<lb />Farrakhan.<lb /><lb />The controversial land<lb />reform program --which has<lb />targeted vast land holdings<lb />of more than 30 million<lb />acres, more than the size of<lb />Belgium, in the hands of<lb /><lb />just 4,000 White farmers for<lb />redistribution to millions of<lb />landless Blacks-- is aimed at<lb />correcting historical injus-<lb />tices, Mr. Mugabe pointed<lb />out.<lb /><lb />While unsympathetic<lb />European critics complain<lb />about what they call "sei-<lb />zures" of the land from<lb />White farmers -- most of<lb />whom are the descendants<lb />of British and South African<lb />colonial settlers-- they never<lb />mention that the land was<lb />originally taken by force<lb />from the indigenous<lb />Africans in the first place,<lb />Mr. Mugabe said.<lb /><lb />During the meeting<lb />with Min. Farrakhan, Pres.<lb /><lb />Mugabe recited the history -<lb /><lb />of the armed struggle to<lb />topple the entrenched colo-<lb />nialists as well as the two-<lb />week-long 1979 negotia-<lb />tions at Lancaster House in<lb />London, which led to a<lb />peace agreement. The ma-<lb /><lb />3213 S. Mugabe<lb /><lb />said, the settlers took the<lb />land by force from the<lb />original African occupants,<lb />never compensating them<lb />for that stolen land.<lb /><lb />The debate over the<lb />land reform question never<lb />discusses some of the enor-<lb />mous land holdings of mul-<lb />tiple tracts held by members<lb />of Britain's House of Lords,<lb />or by White South Africans<lb />like Nick Oppenheimer,<lb />said Pres. Mugabe.<lb /><lb />Mr. Oppenheimer, for<lb />example, is the scion of<lb />South Africa's DeBeers dia-<lb />mond company, and the<lb />Anglo-American gold and<lb />nickel mines. Those opera-<lb /><lb />tions alone control as much ~<lb /><lb />as 40 percent of neighboring<lb />South Africa's economy. In<lb />addition, Mr. Oppenheimer<lb />personally owns more than<lb />32,000 acres --an area equal<lb />to nearly half the size of the<lb />entire state of Rhode Island-<lb />- on several farms in<lb /><lb />Zimbabwe.<lb /><lb />The government insists<lb />on one farm per owner, and<lb />that there can be no more<lb />absentee land owners.<lb />These are among the regula-<lb />tions to which White farm-<lb />ers object.<lb /><lb />Despite a fierce anti-<lb />Mugabe opposition political<lb />movement funded by<lb />Europeans, no one should<lb />reverse the land reform pro-<lb />gram because it has become<lb />the cornerstone of peace and<lb />potential prosperity. Min.<lb />Farrakhan told reporters fol-<lb />lowing a visit to the<lb />National Heroes Acre,<lb />where he laid a wreath at the<lb />Tomb of the Unknown<lb />Soldier.<lb /><lb />"From what I have seen<lb />and obsefVed, the soldiers<lb />who fought for the libera-<lb />tion of this country should<lb />take everything which they<lb />fought for day and night<lb />during the war of liberation.<lb /><lb />arolina<lb /><lb />otors of<lb /><lb />The West should not worry<lb />when the war veterans take<lb />their land because the land<lb />belongs to the ordinary poe-<lb />ple of Zimbabwe.<lb /><lb />"It will be a sin to God<lb />if the government ignored<lb /><lb /> T those who spearheaded the<lb /><lb />land reform program, ? Min.<lb />Farrakhan continued, ac-<lb />cording to a published re-<lb />port. "Long life to the war<lb />veterans because they are<lb />the vanguard of the libera-<lb />tion struggle."<lb /><lb />Toward the goal of re-<lb />gional steadfastness, Pres.<lb />Mugabe said that Southern<lb />Africa's former liberation<lb /><lb />movements --ZANU in<lb />Zimbabwe, SWAPO in<lb />Namibia, Frelimo in<lb /><lb />Mozambique, and the ANC<lb />in South Africa-- have be-<lb />gun to meet and to strate-<lb />gize among themselves in<lb />order to counter the nega-<lb />tive forces mounting against<lb />them from the former colo-<lb />nial powers to surrender<lb />their economi authority and<lb />their sovereignty over their<lb />own land and resources.<lb />"We want you to know<lb />of our great admiration and<lb />respect for you, and our<lb />prayers that God will keep<lb />you healthy and strong that<lb />you may see this revolution<lb />through to completion, and<lb />if not that whoever succeeds<lb />you will, as you have laid<lb />the foundation for them to<lb />do," Min. Paul Sullins of Catholic<lb />University says, "Occupants<lb />of a church's back pews are<lb /><lb />aless fully engaged in the<lb /><lb />church's worship and life<lb />than those seated farther<lb />forward." Sullins further<lb />says, "It pretty much con-<lb />firmed that those who sit in<lb />the front, in lots of settings<lb />(not just worship services),<lb />tend to be more engaged."<lb />Some other conclusions:<lb />People who come the earli-<lb />est and sit in the back tend<lb />to sit on the end of the pews,<lb />so they can get out of there;<lb />people who arrive just in<lb />time may be more, con-<lb />cerned about things that are<lb /><lb />~"externals" in the worship<lb /><lb />service, such as being near<lb />exits, which they were do-<lb />mat" they wil be doing<lb />what wi doi<lb />afterward. me<lb />To Sullins, worship isn't<lb />the only reason people at-<lb />tend services. "Religion is<lb />very much a socially ap-<lb />proved behavior in<lb />American society. People<lb />want to appear to be. relig-<lb />ious. People perceive them-<lb />selves to have better status<lb />when they are religious.<lb />This is the motivation for<lb /><lb />- those who come to the<lb /><lb />service, but don't want to be<lb />invested in it. It's conven-<lb />ient because people can get<lb />out of the parking lot before<lb />it gets congested.<lb /><lb />An advantage of being up<lb />front in worship is that you<lb />don't have the entire church<lb />distracting you. We have<lb />turned the service into a<lb />performance. We have<lb />changed the service trying<lb />to please people instead of<lb />trying to please the Lord.<lb /><lb />Older people may sit in<lb />the back or the sides so they<lb />can get up if they need to,<lb />and some may sit up in the<lb />front to hear better.<lb /><lb />What's Up With<lb /><lb />Black Males?<lb />(A Black Male Ts Point of View)<lb /><lb />Reflections ,<lb /><lb />wet Jones<lb /><lb />ECSTATIC UTTERANCES<lb />(A Heavenly Language)<lb /><lb />Speaking in tongues re-<lb />mains fascinating and con-<lb />troversial. Worrill,<lb /><lb />Los Angeles Sentinel<lb />African people in America<lb />have a historic responsibil-<lb />ity to never forget how w<lb />came to America, wh -<lb />happened to us in rout .<lb />what happened when v<lb />arrived upon these shore<lb />and how these events co<lb />tinue to impact on us every-<lb />day. The vestiges of the<lb />trans-Atlantic slave trade<lb />and slavery are at the root<lb />and foundation of our op-<lb />pressed condition _ "in<lb />America today. In this spirit<lb />and in this context, through<lb />the momentum gained from<lb />our participation in the<lb />United Nations World<lb />Conference Against Racism<lb />held in Durban, South<lb />Africa last summer, the<lb />Durban 400 (led by the<lb />December 12th Movement<lb />International Secretariat and<lb />the National Black United<lb />Front / NBUF), has called<lb />for a Millions For<lb />Reparations Mass Rally to<lb />demand reparations from<lb />the US government in<lb />Washington on August 17.<lb /><lb />At this point in the<lb /><lb />development of the repara-<lb />tions movement in America,<lb />it is time to take our<lb />organizing efforts to the<lb />Streets in a mass way to<lb />demonstrate to the world<lb />our unity in the quest and<lb />demand for reparations for<lb />African people in America<lb /><lb />from the US government.<lb />Thus far, the organizing<lb />work of the reparations<lb />movement has _ centefed<lb />around educational forums,<lb />lectures, radio and televi-<lb />sion discussions, flyers,<lb />brochures, and pamphlets<lb />explaining why we are<lb />owed reparations, and arti-<lb />cles and books explaining<lb />the many facets of our<lb />demands. The National<lb />Coalition of Blacks for<lb />Reparations in America<lb />(N TCOBRA), _ since _ its<lb />founding in 1987, has been<lb />the major force in educating<lb />and inspiring thousands of<lb />African people in America<lb />to understand our demands.<lb />Through its national confer-<lb />ences, local chapters, and<lb />educational § campaigns,<lb />N TCOBRA he yes the<lb /><lb />or Organizing force in<lb />helping to build and ignite<lb /><lb />the ions movement in<lb />a<lb /><lb />We must now unite our<lb />reparations organizing ef-<lb />forts to mobilize African<lb />people in America to partici-<lb />pate and actively support the<lb />Millions For Reparations<lb />Mass Rally on August 17 in<lb />Washington.<lb /><lb />The organizing and mo-<lb />bilizing taking place in the<lb />reparations movement<lb />throughout the United States<lb />has the potential revitalizing<lb />the Black _Liberation<lb />Movement. A broad spec-<lb />trum of Africans in America<lb />organizations, associations,<lb />institutions, sororities, fra-<lb />ternities, churches, and just<lb />everyday African people in<lb />this country support the just<lb />demand for reparations.<lb />Millions of African people<lb />in America clearly under-<lb />stand and support the de-<lb />mands for reparations from<lb />the government and a vari-<lb />ety of private institutions<lb />and corporations who all<lb />benefited from more than<lb />400 years of free labor.<lb /><lb />August 17 is also the<lb />115th anniversary of the<lb />birth of Honorable Marcus<lb />Mosiah Garvey, who was<lb />born in the small town of St.<lb />Ann Ts Bay, Jamaica. In<lb />selecting Garvey Ts birth date<lb />for the day of the Millions<lb />For Reparations Mass Rally,<lb />we are paying tribute to the<lb />person who led one of the<lb />greatest mass movements<lb />for African redemption and<lb /><lb />liberation in this country<lb />during the 1920 Ts. A great<lb />deal of the success of the<lb />Garvey movement was fo-<lb />cused around organizing in<lb />the streets. We must under-<lb />stand that our most success-<lb />ful organizing efforts have<lb />been when we have taken<lb />our issues to the streets.<lb />Since othe call ? for the<lb />Millions For Reparations<lb />Rally, the reparations move-<lb />ment is in the streets!<lb /><lb />Perhaps Garvey Ts great-<lb />est contribution to the uplift-<lb />ment of our people was his<lb />ability to organize African<lb />people around the African<lb />principle: the greatest good<lb />for<lb /><lb />greatest number.<lb />This was reflected in the<lb />first International<lb /><lb />Convention of the Negro<lb />Peoples of the World in<lb />ison Square Garden in<lb />1920. More than 25,<lb />African people from all over<lb />the world witnessed the<lb /><lb />choosing of Red, Black, and<lb />Green as the colors of the<lb />Provisional Government.<lb /><lb />In the Durban 400 Call<lb />for the Millions For<lb />Reparations Mass Rally we<lb />say, oThe exploitation of<lb />African people in this coun-<lb />try has taken many forms<lb />through the years. The<lb />centuries of the chattel slav-<lb />ery laid the foundation for<lb />our relationship to America.<lb />From the sharecropping<lb />fields to the factories,<lb />African labor built the osu-<lb />per power ? that is the<lb />United States. In return we<lb />have endured the terrorism<lb />of the Ku Klux Klan, sys-<lb />tematic lynchings, chain<lb />gangs, plantation prisons,<lb />police torture and murder,<lb />poverty, miseducation, in-<lb />adequate housing, unem-<lb />ployment, welfare<lb />programs, ACS child kid-<lb />nappings, voter discrimina-<lb />tion, crack,<lb />Rockefeller drug laws, po-<lb />litical prisoners, and the<lb />assassination of our leaders.<lb />However, we are still here!<lb /><lb />The demand for repara-<lb />tions for African people is<lb />just and simple.<lb /><lb />It is simply an attempt<lb />to orepair ? to omake whole ?<lb />the descendants of the vic-<lb />tims of the trans-Atlantic<lb />Slave trade, which was a<lb />crime against humanity!<lb />Crimes against humanity<lb />have no statute of limita-<lb /><lb />tions. And our people still<lb />suffer from the vestiges of<lb />enslavement and coloniza-<lb />tion.<lb /><lb />If we truly internalize<lb />this call, we will prepare to<lb />go oto the Capitol of this<lb />nation, built on slave labor,<lb />the rightful and only place<lb />to declare our human and<lb />legal right to Reparations...<lb />They owe us! The repara-<lb />tions movement is in the<lb />streets!<lb /><lb />Conrad Worrill is the<lb /><lb />national chairman of the "<lb /><lb />National Black United<lb />Front (NBUF) located at<lb />12817 §.
