Founded in<lb />1865 in London, it does not<lb />have sacraments or com-<lb />munion or any prescribed<lb />rules for its worship serv-<lb />ices.<lb /><lb />The first Salvationists in<lb />this country arrived in New<lb />York in 1880. Initially, their<lb />street theater and marching<lb />bands (meet to draw atten-<lb /><lb />tion to their salvation mes-<lb />sage) earned disdain from<lb />other Christians. Their<lb />original intent was to con-<lb />vert everyone they met to<lb />Christ, but Salvationists<lb />found that people most ap-<lb />preciated their social wel-<lb />fare programs, In response, .<lb />the church toned down its<lb />evangelical identity and<lb />concentrated on doing<lb />good, which resulted in<lb /><lb />us from all unrighteous-<lb />ness" (I John 1:9"). What<lb />areas of our lives can the<lb />Bible cleanse?<lb /><lb />It can cleanse us from<lb />wrong thoughts. Sometimes<lb />we are tempted to think<lb />critically of others; God's<lb />Word can prevent this<lb />(Ps.1:2) On other occasions<lb />fearful thoughts may race<lb />through our minds; the<lb />Scriptures will prevent this<lb />also (Josh. 1:8). In fact, the<lb />Bible will establish our total<lb />thought-life if we but allow<lb />It to do so (.Phil.4:8,9 and 2<lb />Peter 1: 5 -10).<lb /><lb />It can cleanse us from<lb />wrong words. Of all the<lb />Bible authors, James seems<lb />to be God's expert on the<lb />sins of the human tongue.<lb />In the first chapter of his<lb /><lb />book, he deals with this<lb />very thing and shows the<lb />absolute necessity of . de-<lb />upon _ the<lb />Scriptures to keep our<lb /><lb />pendence<lb />words true (James 1:22-26).<lb /><lb />See also Psalm 119:172.<lb />It can cleanse us<lb /><lb />(John 15:3).<lb /><lb />Finally, God's Word will<lb />from wrong<lb />thoughts, words, and ac-<lb />wrong<lb />thoughts, words, and ac-<lb />tions will keep us from<lb /><lb />keep us<lb /><lb />tions; or else<lb /><lb />God's Word.<lb /><lb />eae<lb /><lb />LIVE IN CONCERT<lb /><lb />SPECIAL APMEARANCE GY .<lb />VOCAL DON ef GUITERMAN<lb /><lb />(MALAISE OF MAN,<lb /><lb />from<lb />wrong actions. With the sole exception of Cali-<lb /><lb />fornia Democrat, Barbara Lee, the entire<lb /><lb />Congressional Black Caucus backed BushTs<lb />war powers resolution, and some Caucus<lb />members supported his controversial anti-<lb />terrorism bill.<lb /><lb />*Personal security. More blacks than<lb />ever rely on airlines for their vacation and<lb />business travel. They demand, as whites,<lb />that air travel be as safe as possible. If itTs<lb />a question of their personal safety versus<lb />concern about discrimination against Arab<lb />travelers, they will opt for safety.<lb /><lb />*Relgious intolerance. Christian funda-<lb />mentalist beliefs have always had deep root<lb />among many African-Americans. The so-<lb />cial conservatism this engenders fuels sus-<lb />picion, fear, hostility and ignorance of and<lb />toward Islam.<lb /><lb />During the 1960s, many black church<lb />leaders shrilly attacked Malcolm X and the<lb />black Muslims, and rejected any efforts at<lb />inter-religious dialogue with them. In the<lb />aftermath of the terror attacks, few black<lb />ministers have made any effort to initiate or<lb />participate in the legions of dialogue ses-<lb />sions between Christian, Jews and Mus-<lb />lims nationally.<lb /><lb />¢ Anti-police myth. In June 1999, a Jus-<lb />tice Department survey found that blacks<lb />in a dozen cities generally applauded the<lb />police. Many black leaders were flabber-<lb /><lb />They are not stilt police who do thee :<lb /><lb />oThere's sa gotd reason, The Justice De- a<lb />partment survey found that blacks are nearly ;<lb /><lb />twice as likely to be victims of violence as<lb /><lb />whites. The leading cause of death among - |<lb /><lb />young black males and increasingly black<lb /><lb />females under age 24 is still homicide. In _<lb /><lb />nearly all cases, they will be killed, injured,<lb />maimed, and victimized by other blacks.<lb /><lb />Many blacks lost friends and family mem- |<lb /><lb />bers in the Trade Center and Pentagon at-<lb />tacks. They are angry and anguished at<lb />what they regard as yet another criminal act<lb />in which blacks are also victimized.<lb /><lb />The heart wrenching news scenes of<lb />police and public safety personnel, many<lb />of whom are black, risking their lives to<lb />pull people from the Trade Center rubble<lb />touched the same deep nerve in blacks as<lb />other Americans. They enthusiastically<lb />applaud, hail and embrace the police and<lb />public safety personnel in New York and<lb />other cities as oAmerican heroes.? They<lb />have been more than willing to open wide<lb /><lb />their pocketbooks and donate funds to the<lb /><lb />piles of relief funds to aid family members<lb />of the police and firefighters killed in New<lb />York.<lb /><lb />Bush has implored Americans to return<lb />life back to normalcy. Unfortunately, those<lb />blacks who approve racial profiling against<lb />Muslims run the grave risk of making sure<lb />that racial profiling could be part of that<lb />normalcy, and with them once more the<lb />prime targets.<lb /><lb />(Earl Ofari Hutchinson is an author and<lb />columnist.
