Sept. 11. While<lb />many have compared it to the<lb />Dec. 7, 1941. attack on Pearl<lb />Harbor-othe date that will live in infamy? -<lb />in some ways the horror is even larger than<lb />that catastrophe.<lb />Pearl Harbor was a surgical attack against<lb />a military target. But this coordinated strike<lb />only tangentially touched on the military, -<lb />with the crashing of unc of the hijacked<lb />planes into the Pentazon. This was a strike<lb />designed primarily to insini, murder and<lb />terrorize those who hi oot engaged in any<lb />war at all.<lb />- We can count the numbers: more than<lb />260 killed in the tour hijacked airplanes;<lb />possibly up to 200 at the Pentagon; possibly<lb />thousands more in the two towers of the<lb />World Trade Center, which collapsed into<lb />twisted piles of glass. steel and concrete, As<lb />the dust begins to clear we will ultimately<lb />begin, in some way, to calculate the finan-<lb />cial losses that have been incurred in an: at-<lb />tack designed to devastate AmericaTs-and<lb />the worldTs-financial markets.<lb />* But there is truly no way to calculate the<lb />breadth of the horror that has been visited<lb />upon the nation, or to understand the twist-<lb />ed evil that chose to perpetrate it.<lb />T The mind is awed by the level of preci-<lb />Sion that went into the four hijackings-all<lb />gccurring within moments of each other, at<lb />three different locations. We are amazed<lb />by the expense and planning that it must<lb />have taken to coordinate this activity. We<lb />are overwhelmed by the evil that would<lb />engage in such precision, planning and ex-<lb />eeution without a shred of conscience or<lb />compassion for all those who would be<lb />Ipst. And we are amazed, and saddened, by<lb />the pictures taken in parts of the Arab<lb />world-rejoicing at the devastation and<lb />tragedy that had befallen the oGreat Satan?<lb />the United States.<lb />But as vile as this event has been, there<lb />are lessons-and warnings-in the holocaust.<lb />The lesson is that we are not invulnera-<lb />ble. America has truly been a blessed na-<lb />tion. There has not been a single shot fired<lb />by a foreign power on American soil since<lb /><lb />oBut the blessing that God has extended<lb />upon us is just that-a blessing, not a<lb />birthright. We live in a world that is filled<lb /><lb />with evil people, people who will stop at<lb />nothing to destroy what they cannot build.<lb />The terroist attack has made a direct hit on<lb />our sense of complacency, comfort and ar-<lb />rogance. .<lb /><lb />And there are warnings, as well. In our<lb />anger, we cannot be too quick to assume we<lb />know who committed this vile act.<lb /><lb />Much of the discussion has centered<lb />around Osama bin Laden, the fanatical<lb />Muslem cleric who is apparently in hiding<lb />in Afghanistan. Others have said that this<lb />could have been state-sponsored terrorism,<lb />with Iraq as a chief suspect.<lb /><lb />But, as this is being written, no one has<lb />taken responsibility. Therefore, we do not<lb />know. We cannot forget what happened in<lb />the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing,<lb />when-before we learned that the bombers<lb />were right-wing White men-Arabs around<lb />the country were being harassed because of<lb />the mistaken belief that the bombing was<lb />Arab terrorism.<lb />~ Areligion or a nationality did not commit<lb />these acts: evil men did. Their evil was tru-<lb />ly indiscriminate: theres were Blacks and<lb />Whites, Jews, gentiles and Arabs, men and<lb />women in the airplanes they hijacked. All<lb />nationalities and cultures were represented<lb />in the World Trade Center, and even in the<lb />Pentagon.<lb /><lb />We cannot allow our fear to cause us to<lb />kill the very liberty that makes us the envy<lb /><lb />"of the world-and, yet, that makes us more<lb /><lb />vulnerable to these attacks. And we cannot<lb />allow our anger to cause us to lash out at<lb />people just because they do not look like<lb />we do-or just because they look like theT<lb />people we believed may have terrorized us.<lb />As African-Americans, we understand the<lb />shame, horror-and evil-of being singled out<lb />for abusive treatment just because someone<lb />in power believes that our skin color or na-<lb />tionality in some way links us to other folks<lb />like us who engage in criminal behavior.<lb />We all grieve.<lb /><lb />We have experienced a terror that is un-<lb />fathomable. But the nation will recover. We<lb />will emerge stronger and wiser from this-if<lb />we do not allow fear and rage to compel us<lb />to commit suicide on our own liberties or<lb />social homicide against those who are dif-<lb />ferent from us. If we do that. then we will<lb />have given our enemies the victory they<lb />wanted-a victory they could not achieve on<lb />their own.<lb /><lb />September 11 attacks leave<lb />plenty questions of faith<lb /><lb />he past weeks have been hard<lb /><lb />for all peace-loving people all<lb /><lb />over the world. It is a time that<lb /><lb />revealed the bestial and barbaric<lb /><lb />extent to which some Muslim<lb />extremists can go: killing and inflicting<lb />pain on innocent people in a spuriously<lb />frivolous belief that it would win favor for<lb />them in the sight of God.<lb /><lb />It is a cause that makes them believe the<lb />universe should be purged of every religion<lb />that does not pay homage to the superiority<lb />of Islam, leaving Islam as the bona fide and<lb />authentic religion of the world. In pursuit<lb />of that belief, they have since 1993 execut-<lb />ed monstrous atrocities all over the globe,<lb />but America never took them too seriously<lb />uatil now.<lb /><lb />oThey bombed the World Trade Center in<lb />1993, killing six people and injuring others;<lb />they bombed a Phillipine airplane in 1994<lb /><lb />ling one person and injuring a dozen.<lb />others; and they made an assassination at-<lb />tempt on Egyptian President Hosni<lb />Mubarak who was on a visit to Ethiopia in<lb />1995. If those sequential, annual killings<lb />didnTt sound an auditory alarm to American<lb />intelligence, they hit a home run in 1996<lb />when they attacked a military housing unit<lb />in Saudi Arabia, killing nearly a score of<lb />USS. soldiers. Still, the neo-terrorists<lb />proved too crafty, too cunning and too elu-<lb />Sive to be detected. Fearing detection, how-<lb />ever, they had a cooling-off period in 1997.<lb /><lb />-But they were back in action, big time, in<lb />1998. They devastated lives on a massive<lb />note when they bombed U.S. embassies in<lb />Kenya and Tanzania, killing 235 people in<lb />the process and injuring more than 5,000<lb />others. After those killings, President Bill<lb />Clinton reacted via missile attacks on<lb />Osama bin LadenTs hideout in Afghanistan.<lb />The attack, however, was not carried out on<lb />a Sustained level because the president was<lb /><lb />at the time accused of using bin Laden as a<lb />faAade to shield him from the Monica<lb />Lewinsky debacle. Head of cells or groups<lb />that pervade over 50 countries, including<lb />the United States, bin Laden, son of a for-<lb />mer Saudi Arabian oil magnate, is worth<lb />$300 million and bank rolls his wide net-<lb />work of terrorists known as The Base (Al<lb />Qaeda).<lb /><lb />In nefarious activities last year, they<lb />bombed the USS Cole off the coast of<lb />Yemen in the Middle East and killed 17<lb />U.S. service personnel.<lb /><lb />Then, on Sept. 11, they executed their<lb />most sophisticated and devious attack yet<lb />in the history of terrorism by hijacking four<lb />commercial aircrafts and plunging three of<lb /><lb />_them into the twin towers that used to<lb /><lb />house the World Trade Center in New York |<lb /><lb />and The Pentagon in Virginia. More than<lb />5,000 people are feared to have perished in<lb />those attacks. The fourth plane did not get<lb />to its destination because of the heroic feat<lb />of some of the passengers on board, who<lb />forced the aircraft to crash in Shanksville<lb />near Pittsburgh.<lb /><lb />Investigations have found bin LadenTs<lb />network responsible for the crashes and<lb />President Bush has named him a prime sus-<lb />pect. In fact, bin LadenTs atrocities have<lb />now made Libyan leader, Muammar<lb />Gaddafi look like an angel and Ayatollah<lb />Khomeini a saint. Unfortu-<lb />nately, many more innocent lives will be<lb />lost in the United States and in<lb />Afghanistan while each man seeks to anni-<lb />hilate the other.<lb /><lb />Without a doubt, the loss of lives in<lb />New YorkTs World Trade Center and at the<lb />Pentagon is a tragedy, an act of cowardice<lb />that cannot be condoned or defended on<lb />any grounds. The American<lb />people should know that my administra-<lb />tion is determined to find, to get them run-<lb />ning, and to hunt them down.?<lb /><lb />Bin Laden, the person being hunted, is-<lb />sued a statement denying he had ocarried<lb />out this act. oBut Jamal Ismail, a Palestin-<lb />1an journalist, said an aide to bin Laden<lb />had called him immediately after last<lb />week's devastating attack to say his boss<lb />had denied orchestrating the recent vio-<lb />lence but othanked almighty Allah and<lb />bowed before him when he heard this<lb />news.?<lb /><lb />To begin to understand how bin Laden<lb />could be thankful for the bloody deaths of<lb />thousands of innocent people in New York<lb />and Washington, one needs to trace the<lb />roots of his anger.<lb /><lb />Bin Laden was born in 1957 to a Syrian<lb />mother in Saudi Arabia, the 17th of 52<lb />children. His father, Mohamed Awad bin<lb />Laden, had emigrated from South Yemen,<lb />eventually owning the Bin Laden Group,<lb />the largest construction company in the<lb />kingdom, now worth about 5 billion.<lb /><lb />Instead of continuing to live a life of<lb />privilege, young bin Laden chose to travel<lb />to Afghanistan to help successfully repel<lb />the 10-year Soviet invasion, which ended<lb />in 1989.<lb /><lb />A year before the Soviets withdrew, bin<lb />Laden established his own organization,<lb />Al-Qaeda, an Arabic term meaning othe<lb />base.? He became involved in a series of<lb />regional disputes, including IraqTs invasion<lb />of Kuwait.<lb /><lb />Bin laden anger toward the United<lb />States escalated after the commencement<lb />of the Persian Gulf War in 1991, according<lb />to his associates. He was particularly upset<lb />with the decision to station American<lb />troops in Saudi Arabia, which he saw as<lb /><lb /><lb /><lb />Q<lb /><lb />Osama bin LadenTs terrorist<lb />background is unimaginable<lb /><lb />olatest and greatest? aggression against the<lb />Islamic world.<lb /><lb />The riches-to -rags leader was indicted<lb />after he was linked to the 1993 World<lb />Trade Center bombing that took six lives.<lb />He was also said to be implicated in the at-<lb />tacks on the U.S. embassies in East Africa,<lb />leaving 224 dead.<lb /><lb />But bin Laden contends that heTs not the<lb />problem. m<lb /><lb />The American imposes himself on<lb />everyone, obin Laden said in a 1998 inter-<lb />view with ABC-TV Reporter John Miller.<lb />oAmericans accuse our children in Pales-<lb />tine of being terrorists-those-children, who<lb />have no weapons and have not even<lb />reached maturity. My<lb /><lb />concern stems from the inability of some<lb /><lb />||| |: members of the Metro Council to accept<lb /><lb />the fact that the citizens of Davidson -<lb /><lb />county has given their views about term<lb /><lb />limits, and want the issue behind them.<lb />The people have said No, No, No! "<lb /><lb />Yet there are some council members.<lb />who either refuse to.accept the mandate of<lb />the people, or they think the voting public<lb />is too dumb to know what they were vot-<lb />ing for when they so soundly defeated the<lb />effort to repeal in the last Metro General<lb />election. T thas<lb /><lb />oIt was obvious in the last vote. on Term<lb />Limits, almost four years ago, that the lat-<lb />sible for<lb />placing the language on the ballot, used<lb /><lb />| the confusing words that was used, any<lb /><lb />voter with an once of voting savvy should<lb />have known that this was an attempt fo<lb />hoodwink the voting public.<lb /><lb />Now here they come again with the<lb />ideas, advanced recently by Councilman<lb />Phil Ponder, on the Editorial page of the<lb />Tennessean, where he indicates that new<lb />additions to the council arenTt very bright.<lb /><lb />In his theory that a third term would make "<lb /><lb />the Council more efficient, he further<lb />sealed the thought that a person has to be<lb />in the council almost eight years before<lb />they know what they are doing. If that is<lb />the case, the public had better examine the<lb />qualification of those we vote into office,<lb />and not be so worried about extending the<lb />terms of those who are too dumb to grasp<lb />the cityTs business.<lb /><lb />I would offer one consideration for the<lb />public, not the council, to punder. (No pun<lb />in tended). And that is to start staggering<lb />Councilmanic terms, by voting on differ-<lb />ent districts at different times for a third<lb />of the council members, until there is no<lb />danger of more than one third of the coun-<lb />cil members to be freshman at one time.<lb />That way the city would always be as-<lb />sured that a healthy number of the mem-<lb />bers are seasoned legislators and are full<lb />aware of the needs of the people of<lb />Nashville. How the one third would be se-<lb />lected could be the responsibility of a pan-<lb />el of citizens selected from. the city at-<lb />large. Until that time my personal opimion<lb />is, STOP TRYING TO REPAEL TERM -:.<lb />LIMIT. THE PEOPEE HAVE SPOKEN.<lb />THREE TIMES! 8<lb /><lb />Since some are still worried about being<lb />one-term council members, why not make<lb />each term one of eight years, and bar any-<lb />one who have already served one four<lb />year term at any time, from running in any<lb />election until the formula for staggering<lb />the terms have been solidified. In those<lb />original eight years any person smart<lb />enough to get elected, should at least<lb />know how to govern their district. Mr.<lb />Ponder seems to think the freshman mem-<lb />bers are still wetbehind the ears after al-<lb />most four years, so give them eight years,<lb />since the older and wiser councilmen do<lb />not deem it their responsibility to teach<lb />the newly elected members. It was the<lb />cares of the world. They wanted<lb />honor from men rather than honor<lb />from Allah (God). They wanted<lb />wealth from the wicked who were in<lb />power. So, to ingratiate themselves to<lb />those in power they softened the<lb />truth; they mixed truth with false-<lb />hood. That kind of religious message<lb />is acceptable to the wicked because<lb /><lb />we are not calling the wicked to<lb /><lb />repent.<lb /><lb />What we have in America today, in<lb />the world of Christianity, in the world<lb />of Islam, in the world of Judaism, are:<lb /><lb />men and women who have heard the -<lb /><lb />word, who say they believe the word,<lb />but are afraid to preach the word for<lb />fear that if they condemn the wicked<lb />practices of the people and call the<lb />people to repentance, it will weaken<lb />the donations [to the church].<lb /><lb />America is at war. The president is<lb />telling the American.people that this<lb />campaign will take years and that the<lb />American people should get use to<lb />the idea of the loss of life to<lb />accomplish the goal of ridding the<lb />earth of terrorists. Most of those who<lb />will die if the war continues are<lb /><lb />Black and Brown and poor White.<lb /><lb />At this moment the United Nations is<lb />Struggling to find a definition for<lb />terrorism and terrorist that all would<lb />agree with, for one nation's terrorist<lb />is another nation's freedom fighter.<lb />We have to discern whether the<lb />governments of the world are repres-<lb />sive of the legitimate aspirations of<lb />their citizens. And if that is so, and a<lb />person rises up within that<lb />govemment to seek redress to alter-<lb />that govemment, or to replace that<lb />government, then are they terrorists<lb />or are they the liberators of their<lb />people from oppression? This ques-<lb />tion has been quite difficult for the<lb />United Nations to determine: What is<lb />the correct. standard by which a<lb />person or a nation will be judged as<lb />terrorist and their actions judged as<lb />terrorism?<lb /><lb />_ makes these people like this? ,<lb /><lb />"There is a law of causé and effect.<lb />_ What we are. experiencing in the<lb /><lb />world is the effect of a cause that we<lb />may not see right now. But only when<lb />the root of the conflict is exposed to<lb />the light can the tree of the conflict<lb />die.<lb /><lb />I remember the Stamp Act in<lb />American history. And | know you<lb />remember some of the laws that the<lb />British imposed on the colonies that<lb />led to the Boston Tea Party where<lb />they dumped all the tea in the water.<lb />They were terrorists to the crown, but<lb />they were freedom fighters to the<lb />early colonies. Paul Revere was a<lb />terrorist to the British, but, he was a<lb />freedom fighter to those in the<lb />colonies. The Minute Men_ that<lb />fought at Lexington and Concord,<lb />they were terrorists to the British.<lb />But, if it were not for Paul Revere, if<lb />it were not for the Minute Men, if it<lb />were not for Crispus Attucks, if it<lb />were not for those that loved freedom<lb />more than comfort, we wouldn't be<lb />saying God bless America today.<lb />The Declaration of Independence is<lb />divided into four parts. The first part<lb />is called the Preamble. The second is<lb />a Declaration of Rights. The third is<lb /><lb />a Bill of Indictment. And the fourth is<lb /><lb />a Statement of Independence. | want<lb />to show us today how far we have<lb />gone away from principles that this<lb />nation was established upon.<lb /><lb />The preamble says: "When in the<lb /><lb />- Course of human events, it becomes-<lb /><lb />necessary for one people to dissolve<lb />the Political bands which connected<lb />them with another, and to assume<lb />among the Powers of the Earth, the<lb />Separate and equal station to which<lb />the Laws of nature and of nature's<lb /><lb />God entitled them, a decent respect to<lb />the Opinions of Mankind requires<lb />that they should declare the causes<lb />which impel them to the Separation.<lb />"When there is a "decent respect of<lb />the opinions of mankind" you should<lb />tell mankind why you want to be<lb />separated from the crown. They had<lb />to make this known worldwide.<lb />That's how the French got involved.<lb /><lb />It goes on to say, "We hold these<lb />Truths to be self-evident, that all Men<lb />are created equal, that they are<lb />endowed by their Creator with certain<lb />unalienable Rights, that among these<lb />are Life, Liben'y, and the Pursuit of<lb />Happiness." This is talking about<lb />human rights. Thomas Jefferson was<lb />rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ<lb />even though he didn't necessarily<lb />apply it to the slaves. Those<lb />Founding Fathers of this nation were<lb />God-fearing men [who would be<lb />displeased] if they could come back<lb />today and see that the children can't<lb />utter a prayer in school, that this<lb />nation has put God out and relegated<lb />God and religion to some back seat,<lb />when without God you have no<lb />government.<lb /><lb />The president of the United States,<lb />the commander and chief of the<lb />armed forces of the world's greatest<lb />and only super power, carries enor-<lb />mous weight in the decision that he<lb />makes to send the youth of America<lb /><lb />into harms way in the name of<lb /><lb />defeating terrorists. | would humbly<lb />ask our president, is there a better<lb />way to defeat terroists? Must count-<lb />less hundreds of thousands of inno-<lb /><lb />cent lives be lost and the cause of<lb />terror never be addressed?<lb /><lb />What then is our motive for a war<lb />against terrorism if we do not look at<lb />the cause of it and eliminate the<lb />cause? This is why the Day of<lb />Atonement among Jewish people as<lb />their holiest day is a celebration that<lb />all humanity needs to be a part of.<lb />Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the<lb />Jewish calendar. It does not belong<lb />alone to Jewish people.<lb /><lb />Christ came as an atonement. When °<lb /><lb />you put a cross around Your neck<lb />you are recognizing that cross as the<lb />instrument of his atonement for sin.<lb />But the beauty of Jesus is that he<lb />said, if any man will come after me,<lb />let him deny himself, and take up his<lb />cross, and follow me." That means<lb />that we become a part of the<lb />atonement process, .<lb /><lb />Great empires existed but no great<lb />nation of yesterday exists today.<lb />Why? There are immutable princi-<lb />ples that contribute to our rise and<lb />the violation of these principles<lb />produce our fall. <lb />ity | cdl<lb />VAL ATRINS.<lb /><lb />Bowles Changes<lb />Dynamics of U S<lb />Senate Race<lb /><lb />Erskine Bowles was _ in,<lb />then out, and now back in<lb />again. Erskine Bowles,<lb />Charlotte Investment<lb />Banker and former Chief of<lb />Staff for the Clinton<lb />Administration, has de-<lb />cided that the best way to<lb />serve his country in this<lb />time of crisis is to run for<lb />the United States Senate.<lb /><lb />Bowles admits that he is<lb />not a politician and not<lb />"Pretty", but thinks he has<lb />the message and the stuff to<lb />win. His messages (Early<lb />Childhood Development,<lb />Healthcare and the<lb />Environment) are very safe<lb /><lb />messages. But having the<lb />right stuff is yet to be<lb />determined. The one thing -<lb />Bowles does have, and "<lb />have plenty of, is M-O-N-<lb />E-Y.<lb /><lb />BowlesT. moneybags - will<lb />change the " fundraising<lb /><lb />strategies on both sides of "<lb /><lb />the primary.. On _ the<lb />Republican side, Richard<lb /><lb />T Vinroot and Liddy Dole<lb /><lb />have been counting on fi-<lb />nancial support from some<lb />of BowlesT investment bud-<lb />dies - who will now, in all<lb />likelihood, give financial<lb />support to their buddy<lb />Erskine. But Bowles' mon-<lb />eybags will have the great-<lb />est impact on his<lb />Democratic opponents -<lb />Secretary of State Elaine<lb />Marshall and former House<lb />Speaker Dan Blue. Elaine<lb />and Dan are gonna have to<lb />raise substantially more<lb />money now that Erskine is<lb />in the race.<lb /><lb />This is gonna be an oodd<lb />person out" race between<lb />Bowles, Marshall and Blue.<lb />It is unlikely that either<lb />candidate will garner 40<lb />percent of the vote. Forty<lb />percent is the magic num-<lb />ber to avoid a primary<lb />runoff. This means that all<lb />three candidates are run-<lb />ning for the Ist or 2nd<lb />place and hoping to get the<lb />endorsement of the third<lb />place finisher.<lb /><lb />and Blue would be exciting<lb /><lb />and Elaine Marshall's en-<lb />~dorsement might be the<lb />deciding factor. In this sce-<lb />nario race becomes a factor.<lb />If Marshall should finish<lb /><lb />third inT the primary she<lb />could still run for reelection |<lb /><lb />as Secretary of State in<lb />2004. She may not want to<lb />send the wrong message to<lb />Dan's supporters by. endors-<lb />ing Bowles. If Blue is the<lb />odd person out, his en-<lb />dorsement will be critical in<lb />the runoff due to the strong<lb />African American presence<lb />in Democratic " primary<lb />races. If Bowles is the odd<lb />person out, he can be king<lb />or queen maker. His mon-<lb />eybags will speak volumes.<lb />This will be an interesting<lb />race. Keep your ear to the<lb />ground and your eyes on<lb />the horizon. A couple of<lb />early warning keys to focus<lb />on are the 4¥iint and Easley<lb />high dollar donors and the<lb />diversity that Marshall and<lb />Bowles have on their staff.<lb />Either way you cut it, the<lb />African American vote -<lb />which comprises about 30<lb />percent of all Democratic<lb />votes in a statewide<lb />Democratic primary elec-<lb />tion - and<lb /><lb />M-O-N-E-Y will play a<lb />huge role in the 2002<lb />Democratic primary race<lb />for the United States<lb />Senate. Since crime<lb />and imprisonment arc in<lb />fact not closely related. we<lb />will conclude the article by<lb />discussing why the U.S. is<lb />sending so many people to<lb />prison.<lb />IMPRISONMENT<lb />In addition to a million<lb />people in prison, there are<lb />those in jails, (about<lb />500,M), those on parole<lb />(about 600,000). those on<lb />proba- tion (about<lb />3,000,000) and those in<lb />juvenile facilities (about<lb />100.000) it is difficult to<lb />grasp the enormity of these<lb />numbers. For example, the<lb />number of people in prison<lb />would comprise the 9th<lb />largest city in the U.S.<lb />The number of people who<lb />are incarcerated in jails and<lb />prisons is greater than the<lb />number of people who live<lb />in 13 states The number of<lb />people under the control of<lb /><lb />moment, he can destroy us.<lb />Rather than seeing Delilah<lb />as a viable threat, Samson<lb />took God's anointing for<lb />granted. The first time she<lb />asked him to tell her the key<lb /><lb />to his strength, Samson lied<lb /><lb />to her. "If they bind me with<lb />seven fresh bowstrings, not<lb />yet dried, then | shall be-<lb />come weak, and be like any<lb />other man," he said (Judg.<lb />16:7).<lb /><lb />He knew they could bind<lb />him with anything, and it<lb /><lb />wouldn't hold him down. /'//_.<lb /><lb />just tease these people a<lb />little while, he thought.<lb />They think they're going to<lb />toy with me, but I'm the<lb />great Samson. I'm inde-<lb />structible. So he allowed<lb />Delilah to tie him up. He<lb />quickly broke the bonds, as<lb />Scripture says, "as a strand<lb />of yarn breaks when it<lb />touches fire? (Judg. 16:9).<lb /><lb />The key to his anointing<lb />was still a secret. But<lb />Delilah didn't back down.<lb />"Look, you have mocked<lb />me and told me lies," she<lb />said. "Now, please tell me<lb />what you may be bound<lb />with" (Judg. 16:10). The<lb />devil will come at us con-<lb />stantly, trying to find the<lb />key to the anointing on our<lb />lives--just as Delilah did<lb />with Samson.<lb /><lb />Up to that point, Delilah's<lb /><lb />with each gravestone repre-<lb />senting a nation of Native<lb />Americans----not an indi-<lb />vidual grave, but a tomb-<lb />stone representing a tribe of<lb />Indians that no longer ex-<lb />ists. Today<lb />the imprisonment rate is<lb />373 (per 100,000 popula-<lb />tion), almost four times<lb />higher than it was in 1972.<lb /><lb />International Comparisons<lb />In 1991 the Sentencing<lb />Project, an independent or-<lb />ganization based in Wash-<lb />ington D.C., issued a report<lb />authored by Marc Mauer, its<lb />assistant director, entitled<lb />"Americans Behind Bars: A<lb />Comparison of International<lb />Rates of Incarceration.? the<lb />report, which used data<lb /><lb />plans had failed. But<lb />Samson didn't wise up. He<lb />chose to have fun. Many of<lb />us have the same mistaken<lb />idea that we can play with<lb />the world. We think we can<lb />participate in ungodly rela-<lb />tionships and ungodly ac-<lb />tivities. "Those things aren't<lb />having an effect on my<lb /><lb />life," we say, but we need to °<lb /><lb />examine ourselves. Are we<lb /><lb />less on fire for God than we -<lb /><lb />were five years ago? If the<lb />answer is yes, then we need<lb />to change what we've been<lb />doing for the last five years.<lb />We must get to the place<lb />where we can stay on fire<lb />for God and remain full of<lb />the Holy Spirit.<lb /><lb />As Delilah _ persisted,<lb />Samson again told her he<lb />could be bound-this time<lb />with new ropes. But when<lb />she tied him up and the<lb />Philistines came to abduct<lb />him, Samson broke the<lb />ropes as if they were<lb />threads (Judg. 16:12). Of<lb />course, Delilah was not<lb />daunted. The next time she<lb />tried to coax Samson to<lb /><lb />reveal the key to his anoint- _<lb /><lb />ing, he came closer to<lb />telling her. He could be<lb />defeated, he said, if she<lb />wove the locks of his hair in<lb />a loom.<lb /><lb />the KKK (America's pre-<lb />miere terrorists) are allowed<lb />to continue to terrorize,<lb />even march down streets<lb />shouting hate. They are<lb />allowed to recruit openly<lb />and their rights are upheld<lb />without punishment or pen-<lb />alty.<lb /><lb />And now, we need to ask<lb />why, in a country that<lb />claims to be just and fair,<lb />the other grievance or point<lb />of view or position is never<lb />told. Why is that? Many people would<lb />parade in costumes made<lb /><lb />from the skins. and heads of<lb />their animals. This festival<lb /><lb />would become the _ first<lb /><lb />Halloween.<lb /><lb />During the first century: the<lb />Romans invaded Britian.<lb />They brought with them<lb />many of their festivals and<lb />customs. One of these was<lb />the. festival know as<lb />Pomona Day, named for<lb />their goddess of fruits and<lb />gardens. It was also cele-<lb />brated around the Ist of<lb />November. After hundreds<lb />of years of Roman rule the<lb />customs of the Celtic's<lb />Samhain festival and the<lb />Roman Pomona Day mixed<lb />becoming one major fall<lb />holiday.<lb /><lb />The next influence came<lb />with the spread of the new<lb /><lb />Cuan whee ho<lb />-out Europe and Britain, In<lb /><lb />ear 835 AD the Roman<lb /><lb />oe oa lic Church would<lb />. make November Ist a<lb /><lb />church holiday to honor all<lb />the saints. It was called All<lb />Souls Day and was to honor<lb />the dead. It was celebrated<lb />with big bonfires, parades,<lb />and people dressing up as<lb />saints, angels and devils.<lb />But the spread of<lb />Christianity did not make<lb />people forget their early<lb />customs. On the eve of All<lb />Hallows, (Oct. 31), people<lb />continued to celebrate the<lb />festivals of Samhain and<lb />Pomona Day.
