          <lb />Bush Warns<lb />'Taliban Will Pay<lb /><lb />a Price'<lb /><lb />By PATRICK E. TYLER<lb /><lb />NEW YORK TIMES<lb />WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 "<lb />Striking at night from air-<lb />craft carriers and distant<lb />bases, the United States and<lb />Britain launched a powerful<lb />barrage of cruise missiles<lb />and long-range bombers<lb />against Afghanistan today to<lb />try to destroy the terrorist<lb />training camps of Osama bin<lb />Laden's Qaeda network and<lb />the Taliban government that<lb />has protected it.<lb />"On my orders, the United<lb />States military has begun<lb />strikes," President Bush said<lb />in a televised statement from<lb />the White House at | p.m.,<lb />just more than half an hour<lb />after the first explosions<lb />were reported in Kabul, the<lb />Afghan capital.<lb />"These carefully targeted ac-<lb />tions are designed to disrupt<lb />the use of Afghanistan as a<lb />terrorist base of operations<lb />and to attack the military<lb />capability of the Taliban<lb />regime," Mr. Bush said.<lb />The Taliban was warned, he<lb />said. to meet America's de-<lb />mands to surrender Mr. bin<lb />Laden, stop supporting ter-<lb />rorism and release foreign<lb />aid workers they hold. "None<lb />of these demands were met,"<lb />he said. "And now, the<lb />Taliban will pay a price."<lb />"Today we focus on<lb />Afghanistan,? he added, but<lb />"the battle is broader."<lb />Alluding to the Sept. 11<lb /><lb />Pete<lb /><lb />By DAVID MENCONI STAFF<lb />WRITER Tri - State Defender<lb /><lb />If the,rise of the Dirty<lb />South has made regional<lb />pride fashionable in the<lb />hip-hop world, rappers<lb />don't get much more fash-<lb />ionable than Petey Pablo.<lb /><lb />The 28 year-old<lb />Greenville native's debut<lb />album "Diary of a Sinner:<lb />Ist Entry" (Jive Records)<lb /><lb />is chock-full of region-<lb /><lb />alisms.<lb />"Diary," which is due for<lb />release next month, in-<lb /><lb />cludes Pablo's flat inde- |<lb /><lb />pendently released single,<lb />"919," named after one of<lb />North Carolina's area<lb />codes; the time- honored<lb />catch phrase<lb />"Cackalacka"; and the<lb />first single, "Raise Up,"<lb />an anthem of state pride.<lb />"Raise is already making<lb />noise on the charts, hitting<lb />No. | on Billboard's rap<lb />sm- gles chart and crack-<lb />ing the top half of the<lb />main "Hot 100" pop sin-<lb />gles chart.<lb /><lb />Since connections are<lb />how most people break<lb />into hip-hop, it comes as<lb />ho surprise that Pablo's<lb />associates are also deeply<lb />of the South. He first<lb />came to attention via a<lb />cameo on New Orleans<lb />rapper Mystikal's chart-<lb />one 2000 album, "Let's<lb />Get Ready." And one of<lb />the main producers of<lb />"Diary" is Timbaland, the<lb />Virginian whose grooves<lb />slinky beats are a hal-<lb />hnark of the Dirty South<lb />sound,<lb /><lb />terror attacks that destroyed<lb />the World Trade Center,<lb />damaged the Pentagon and<lb />killed more than 5,000 peo-<lb />ple, Mr. Bush again warned<lb />that nations that sponsor or<lb />protect "outlaws and killers<lb />of innocents" will "take that<lb />lonely path at their own<lb />peril."<lb /><lb />The skies over Kabul lit up<lb />with flashes, and thunderous<lb />explosions rumbled through<lb />the night, witnesses said.<lb />The Taliban fired antiair-<lb />craft guns into the dark sky,<lb />and their tracers could be<lb />seen by residents of the<lb />capital and around the cities<lb /><lb />of Kandahar and Jalalabad, ©<lb /><lb />strongholds of the radical<lb />Islamic regime.<lb /><lb />Mr. Bush's statement was<lb />followed by one from Prime<lb />Minister Tony Blair of<lb />Britain. Both leaders empha-<lb />sized that the military cam-<lb />paign was not "a war with<lb />Islam," as Mr. Blair asserted,<lb />though no. Muslim country<lb />took part directly in the<lb />attacks and many refused to<lb />allow offensive operations<lb />to be staged from their<lb />territory.<lb /><lb />Mr. Bush said "we are the<lb />friends of almost a billion"<lb />people worldwide "who<lb />practice the Islamic faith.?<lb />Defense Secretary Donald<lb />H. Rumsfeld noted that the<lb />United States had sent its<lb />armed forces five times in<lb />the last decade to defend<lb />oppressed Muslim popula-<lb />tions " in Kuwait, northern<lb />Iraq. Somalia, Bosnia and<lb />Kosovo.<lb />Shortly Mr.<lb /><lb />after Bush<lb /><lb />OCTOBER 1 - OCTOBER 15, 2001.<lb /><lb />spoke, Mr. bin Laden issued<lb />his own threat. On what<lb /><lb />appeared to be a recorded -<lb /><lb />videotape beamed world-<lb />wide by CNN, he staked a<lb />claim to lead all Muslims in<lb />the fight against America,<lb />casting it as the murderer of<lb />Iraqis and of Palestinians<lb />oppressed by Israel,<lb />America's friend.<lb /><lb />Mr. bin Laden blessed the<lb />hijackers who staged the<lb />Sept. 11 attacks and warned,<lb />"I swear to God that America<lb />will not live in peace before<lb />peace reigns in Palestine,<lb />and before all the army of<lb />infidels depart the landT of<lb />Muhammad.?<lb /><lb />Abdul Salam Zaeef, the<lb />Taliban's ambassador to<lb /><lb />oPakistan, called the assault a<lb /><lb />terrorist attack and vowed<lb />that America would "never<lb />achieve its goal."<lb /><lb />The opening aerial campaign<lb />could go on for a week and<lb />will be followed by ground<lb />operations by Special Forces<lb />units to garner information<lb />and hunt down the leaders of<lb />the Qaeda network, admini-<lb />stration officials indicated.<lb />Gen. Richard B. Myers, the<lb />new chairman of the Joint<lb />Chiefs of Staff, said the<lb />bombardment began at 12:30<lb />p.m., Eastern time, and in-<lb />cluded 15 land-based bomb-<lb />ers and 25 strike aircraft<lb />from aircraft carriers. Their<lb />weapons included precision-<lb />guided bombs, and<lb />American warships and<lb />British submarines fired 50<lb />Tomahawk cruise missiles.<lb />A B-52 pilot who took part<lb />in today's attack said by<lb /><lb />y Come<lb /><lb />What You See Is What You Get, What You Read Is What You Know And<lb /><lb />telephone afterward that the<lb />nose of one of the bombers<lb />had been repainted shortly<lb />before the mission to read,<lb />"NYPD, We Remember."<lb /><lb />Mr. Rumsfeld said Mr. bin<lb />Laden was not a specific<lb />target. The initial bombing,<lb />he said, was intended "to<lb />create conditions for sus-<lb />tained antiterrorist" opera-<lb />tions against his<lb />organization.<lb />Mr. Bush did not mention<lb />Mr. bin Laden in his re-<lb />marks, suggesting that the<lb />White House was seeking to<lb />lower expectations of his<lb />capture even as Central<lb />Intelligence Agency and<lb />Special Forces teams were<lb />said to be working fever-<lb />ishly to locate him. He is<lb />suspected of being the mas-<lb />termind behind _ terrorist<lb />strikes on Americans and<lb />American interests even be-<lb />fore the Sept. 11 assault "<lb /><lb />in Somalia in 1993, on two .<lb /><lb />embassies in East Africa in<lb />1998 and on the destroyer<lb />Cole in Yemen a year ago.<lb />A spokesman for Al Jazeera<lb />television, inT the Persian<lb />Gulf emirate of Qatar, said<lb />Mr. bin Laden's words had<lb />arrived at the network's sat-<lb />ellite uplink station in<lb />Kabul.<lb /><lb />"People bring tapes," said<lb />Omar Bec, head of news<lb />gathering for Al Jazeera.<lb />"They deliver them to the<lb />office or leave them at the<lb />door." This tape, he said,<lb /><lb />»"was delivered today to us."<lb /><lb />We, honest to God, don't<lb />know when it was shot,<lb />sslicre it was shot, or how it<lb /><lb />a7<lb /><lb />Save.<lb /><lb />was shot," Mr. Bec said.<lb />Mr. Bush ordered the attack<lb />26 days after hijackers, sev-<lb /><lb />- eral of them now linked by<lb /><lb />investigators to Mr. bin<lb />Laden's network, seized four<lb />airliners, crashing two of<lb />them into the World Trade<lb />Center in New York and one<lb />into the Pentagon in<lb />Washington. A fourth<lb />crashed into a Pennsylvania<lb />field after passengers appar-<lb />ently tried to overpower the<lb />hijackers.<lb /><lb />Mr. Rumsfeld made clear<lb />that the United States was<lb />seeking to orchestrate the<lb />overthrow of the Taliban by<lb />providing military aid and<lb />"developing __ relationships<lb />with groups in Afghanistan<lb />that oppose the Taliban re-<lb />gime" and the "terrorists<lb />they support." The major<lb />opposition force is the<lb />Northern Alliance, but he<lb />also said disaffected mem-<lb />bers of the Taliban and other<lb />groups could coalesce to<lb /><lb />challenge the Taliban.<lb /><lb />The secretary said the goals<lb />of the military operation<lb />were to punish the Taliban<lb />for "harboring terrorists," to<lb />"acquire intelligence" that<lb />will help future operations<lb /><lb />against. Al Qaeda and to<lb /><lb />weaken the Taliban so se-<lb />verely that they will not be<lb />able to withstand an opposi-<lb />tion assault.<lb /><lb />Another goal, Mr. Rumsfeld<lb />said, is to provide relief aid<lb />"to Afghans suffering truly<lb />oppressive living conditions<lb />under the Taliban regime."<lb />To that end, the Pentagon<lb />today sent two C-17 cargo<lb /><lb />RAISE! UPY<lb /><lb />There is also no mistaking<lb />the Southern flavor to the<lb />soul and gospel overtones<lb />on "Diary," especially in<lb />Pablo's gravelly soul-man<lb />voice. Had he come along<lb />30 years earlier, Pablo<lb />probably would have been<lb />cast as an Otis Redding-<lb />style soul shouter.<lb /><lb />"lL didn't choose music;<lb />music chose me," Pablo<lb />says. "I didn't wake up<lb />one day and say to myself,<lb />Rap is a style, that's what<lb />I wanna do.' | don't even<lb />consider my music all-<lb />the- way rap. It's got<lb />words and rhymes, sure,<lb />but also a lot of melodies<lb />and harmonies. I like to<lb />sing as well as rhyme<lb />words, do whatever | feel.<lb />Otis Redding, Marvin<lb />Gaye, Bobby Womack,<lb />Curtis Mayfield - I'm all<lb />about that."<lb /><lb />Pablo comes by the<lb />churchy overtones of<lb />"Diary" honestly. Just like<lb />the soul singers of old, he<lb />grew up in church.<lb /><lb />"That's right | went to a<lb />Free Will Baptist church<lb />right on outside of<lb />Greenville," he says. "I<lb />haven't been back there<lb />since my aunt passed<lb />away. It's kinda hard for<lb />me to go back but eventu-<lb />ally I'll get past that. If.<lb />find the time, I'll walk on<lb />in there. But | doift like it<lb />when I go and people<lb />don't pay attention to The<lb />Word but to Petey Pablo."<lb />Although Pablo does<lb />seem to take religion seri-<lb />ously, he has a criminal<lb />past - as implied by his<lb />album title and the al-<lb /><lb />9<lb /><lb />"GREENVILLE NATIVE COMES HOME..."<lb />Up and coming rapper Petey Pablo, whose hit single<lb />Raise Up" representing North &amp; South Carolinas was<lb /><lb />y and friends, and dropped<lb />by the Joy 1340 AM studios. :<lb /><lb />recently home visiting famil<lb /><lb />bum's themes of knowl-<lb />edge hard-won. "- He<lb />declines to discuss in<lb />detail what happened. But<lb />according to the state<lb />Department of Correction<lb />database, he received a<lb />14- year sentence,in 1993<lb />on a charge of robbery<lb />with a dangerous weapon.<lb />He was released from<lb />Prison in 1998. By then,<lb />he says, music had helped<lb />him find his way.<lb /><lb />"In Prison, people would<lb />say my music changed<lb />their lives," he " says.<lb />"Inmates would be fight-<lb />ing or stabbing, then not<lb />doing it'cause they were<lb />listening to me, They'd<lb />come to me and ask about<lb />some song; Sing that for<lb /><lb />( Staff Photo)<lb /><lb />me, | need to hear<lb />that.'Someday somebody<lb />might be going through a<lb />situation, and | can<lb />change that. Anything<lb />that feels like it can make<lb />a difference, | want to<lb />give it to the world.<lb />Perhaps as a way of<lb />makng amends, Pablo do-<lb />nated $2,400 this year to<lb />the Garner Road Family<lb />YMCA. The money es-<lb />tablished the PLP Fund<lb />(Petey's Little People)<lb /><lb />to pay for disadvantaged<lb />kids to attend the YMCAs<lb />summer camp.<lb /><lb />That comes from growin,<lb />up, from the heat" Pablo<lb />says." didn't have to learn<lb />that. I've always been a<lb /><lb />I<lb /><lb />giving individual<lb /><lb />because that's the way my<lb />mother and grandmother<lb />raised me. I never look<lb />down on an_ individual<lb />unless I'm picking em<lb />up."<lb /><lb />If all goes according to<lb />plan,"Diary will enable<lb />Pablo to do a lot more<lb />good things. To that end,<lb />he went along with his<lb />record companys request<lb />that he do an All City<lb />Request of "Raise Up for<lb />radio. Where the original<lb />version of the song is<lb />strictly North Carolina-<lb />centre (which is the one<lb />getting airplay) gives<lb />shout-outs to a roll call of<lb />other cities " across<lb />Amercia: New York, St.<lb />Louis, Los Angeles.<lb />Atlanta, New Orleans.<lb />"Doing that did kinda<lb />bother me because it de-<lb />feat the purpose of the<lb />song," Pablo admits "You<lb />know, it says,<lb /><lb />planes flying from Germany<lb />to drop 37,500 packets of<lb />food and medical supplies to<lb />help perhaps hundreds of<lb />thousands of refugees. who<lb /><lb />omay flee Afghan cities dur-<lb /><lb />ing the bombing campaign.<lb />With no Muslim govern-<lb />ment taking part in the<lb />attack " in contrast to the<lb />case a decade ago when<lb />Arab forces helped to eject<lb />Iraq's Army from Kuwait "<lb />Mr. Bush nonetheless stated<lb />that "we are supported by<lb />the collective will of the<lb />world."<lb /><lb />"More than 40 countries in<lb />the Middle East, Africa,<lb />Europe and across Asia<lb />have granted air transit and<lb />landing rights," he said.<lb /><lb />The Federal Bureau of<lb />Investigation, | concerned<lb />about more terrorist attacks,<lb />urged law enforcement<lb />agencies across the country<lb />to move to their highest<lb />level of alert.<lb /><lb />"All law enforcement agen-<lb />cies have been asked to<lb />evaluate whether additional<lb />local security measures are<lb />warranted in light of the<lb />military operations and the<lb />current threat level," the<lb />F.B.1. said.<lb /><lb />Security at public buildings<lb />and key installations was<lb />reported high across the<lb />Ugited States and at<lb />American missions abraad<lb />as administration officials<lb />" and the public " braced<lb />for any attempted counter-<lb />strikes by terrorists.<lb /><lb />Vice President Dick Cheney<lb />was placed in a_ secure<lb />location, while Mr. Bush<lb /><lb />cont. page 3......Bomb<lb /><lb />s Home<lb /><lb />This one's for us.9 Then<lb />there are all those other<lb />cities in there. <lb />
          <lb />ee ne ay eee es<lb /><lb />depth of the terror that America<lb />experienced Sept. 11. While<lb />many havc compared it to the<lb />Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl<lb />Harbor-othe date that will live in infamy? -<lb />in some ways the horror is even larger than<lb />that catastrophe.<lb /><lb />Pearl Harbor was a surgical attack against<lb />a military target. But this coordinated strike<lb />only tangentially touched on the military,<lb />with the crashing of une of the hijacked<lb />planes into the Pentagon. This was.a strike<lb />designed primarily to insim. murder and<lb />terrorize those who hia not engaged in any<lb />war at all.<lb />« We can count the numbers: more than<lb />260 killed in the four hijacked airplanes;<lb />possibly up to 200 at the Pentagon; possibly<lb /><lb />thousands more in the two towers of the<lb /><lb />World Trade Center, which collapsed into<lb />twisted piles of glass, steel and concrete, As<lb />the dust begins to clear we will ultimately<lb />begin, in some way, to calculate the finan-<lb />cial losses that have been incurred in arr at-<lb />tack designed to devastate AmericaTs-and<lb />the worldTs-financial markets.<lb /><lb />T But there is truly no way to calculate the<lb />breadth of the horror that has been visited<lb />upon the nation, or to understand the twist-<lb />ed evil that chose to perpetrate it.<lb /><lb /> The mind is awed by the level of preci-<lb />sion that went into the four hijackings-all<lb />gccurring within moments of each other, at<lb />three different locations. We are amazed<lb />by the expense and planning that it must<lb />have taken to coordinate this activity. We<lb />are overwhelmed by the evil that would<lb />engage in such precision, planning and ex-<lb />ecution without a shred of conscience or<lb />compassion for all those who would be<lb />Ipst. And we are amazed, and saddened, by<lb />the pictures taken in parts of the Arab<lb />world-rejoicing at the devastation and<lb />tragedy that had befallen the oGreat Satan?<lb />the United States.<lb /><lb />But as vile as this event has been, there<lb />are lessons-and warnings-in the holocaust.<lb /><lb />The lesson is that we are not invulnera-<lb />ble. America has truly been a blessed na-<lb />tion. There has not been a single shot fired<lb />by a foreign power on American soil since<lb /><lb />181<lb /><lb /> But the blessing that God has extended<lb />upon us is just that-a blessing, not a<lb />birthright. We live in a world that is filled "<lb /><lb />ons can terror<lb /><lb />@ he mind cannot comprehend the ©<lb /><lb />, the world<lb /><lb />with evil people, people who will stop at<lb />nothing to destroy what they cannot build.<lb />The terroist attack has made a direct hit on<lb />our sense of complacency, comfort and ar-<lb />rogance. "<lb /><lb />And there are warnings, as well. In our<lb />anger, we cannot be too quick to assume we<lb />know who committed this vile act.<lb /><lb />Much of the discussion has centered<lb />around Osama bin Laden, the fanatical<lb />Muslem cleric who is apparently in hiding<lb />in Afghanistan. Others have said that this<lb /><lb />could have been state-sponsored terrorism, "<lb /><lb />with Iraq as a chief suspect.<lb /><lb />But, as this is being written, no one has<lb />taken responsibility. Therefore, we do not<lb />know. We cannot forget what happened in<lb />the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing,<lb />when-before we learned that the bombers<lb />were right-wing White men-Arabs around<lb />the country were being harassed because of<lb />the mistaken belief that the bombing was<lb />Arab terrorism.<lb /><lb />T Areligion or a nationality did not commit<lb />these acts: evil men did. Their evil was tru-<lb />ly indiscriminate: theres were Blacks and<lb />Whites, Jews, gentiles and Arabs, men and<lb />women in the airplanes they hijacked. All<lb />nationalities and cultures were represented<lb />in the World Trade Center, and even in the<lb />Pentagon.<lb /><lb />We cannot allow our fear to cause us to<lb />kill the very liberty that makes us the envy<lb />of the world-and, yet, that makes us more<lb />vulnerable to these attacks. And we cannot<lb />allow our anger to cause us to lash out at<lb />people just because they do not look like<lb />we do-or just because they look like theT<lb />people we believed may have terrorized us.<lb />As African-Americans, we understand the<lb />shamie, horror-and evil-of being singled out<lb />for abusive treatment just because someone<lb />in power believes that our skin color or na-<lb />tionality in some way links us to other folks<lb />like us who engage in criminal behavior.<lb />We all grieve.<lb /><lb />We have experienced a terror that is un-<lb />fathomable. But the nation will recover. We<lb />will emerge stronger and wiser from this-if<lb />we do not allow fear and rage to compel us<lb />to commit suicide on our own liberties or<lb />social homicide against those who are dif-<lb />ferent from us. If we do that, then we will<lb />have given our enemies the victory they<lb />wanted-a victory they could not achieve on<lb />their own.<lb /><lb />September 11 attacks leave<lb />plenty questions of faith<lb /><lb />he past weeks have been hard<lb /><lb />for all peace-loving people all<lb /><lb />over the world. It is a time that<lb /><lb />revealed the bestial and barbaric<lb /><lb />extent to which some Muslim<lb />extremists can go: killing and inflicting<lb />pain on innocent people in a spuriously<lb />frivolous belief that it would win favor for<lb />them in the sight of God.<lb /><lb />It is a cause that makes them believe the<lb />universe should be purged of every religion<lb />that does not pay homage to the superiority<lb />of Islam, leaving Islam as the bona fide and<lb />authentic religion of the world. In pursuit<lb />of that belief, they have since 1993 execut-<lb />ed monstrous atrocities all over the globe,<lb />but America never took them too seriously<lb />until now.<lb /><lb />They bombed the World Trade Center in<lb />1993, killing six people and injuring others;<lb />they bombed a Phillipine airplane in 1994<lb />killing one person and injuring a dozen<lb />others; and they made an assassination at-<lb />tempt on Egyptian President Hosni<lb />Mubarak who was on a visit to Ethiopia in<lb />1995. If those sequential, annual killings<lb />didnTt sound an auditory alarm to American<lb />intelligence, they hit a home run in 1996<lb />when they attacked a military housing unit<lb />in Saudi Arabia, killing nearly a score of<lb />U.S. soldiers. Still, the neo-terrorists<lb />proved too crafty, too cunning and too elu-<lb />sive to be detected. Fearing detection, how-<lb />ever, they had a cooling-off period in 1997.<lb /><lb />But they were back in action, big time, in<lb />1998. They devastated lives on a massive<lb />note when they bombed U.S. embassies in<lb />Kenya and Tanzania, killing 235 people in<lb />the process and injuring more than 5,000<lb />others. After those killings, President Bill<lb />Clinton reacted via missile attacks on<lb />Osama bin LadenTs hideout in Afghanistan.<lb />The attack, however, was not carried out on<lb />a sustained level because the president was<lb /><lb />at the time accused of using bin Laden as a<lb />faAade to shield him from the Monica<lb />Lewinsky debacle. Head of cells or groups<lb />that pervade over 50 countries, including<lb />the United States, bin Laden, son of a for-<lb />mer Saudi Arabian oil magnate, is worth<lb />$300 million and bank rolls his wide net-<lb />work of terrorists known as The Base (Al<lb />Qaeda).<lb /><lb />In nefarious activities last year, they<lb />bombed the USS Cole off the coast of<lb />Yemen in the Middle East and killed 17<lb />USS. service personnel.<lb /><lb />Then, on Sept. 11, they executed their<lb />most sophisticated and devious attack yet<lb />in the history of terrorism by hijacking four<lb />commercial aircrafts and plunging three of<lb />them into the twin towers that used to<lb /><lb />house the World Trade Center in New York<lb /><lb />and The Pentagon in Virginia. More than<lb />5,000 people are feared to have perished in<lb />those attacks. His father, Mohamed Awad bin<lb />Laden, had emigrated from South Yemen,<lb />eventually owning the Bin Laden Group,<lb />the largest construction company in the<lb />kingdom, now worth about 5 billion.<lb /><lb />Instead of continuing to live a life of<lb />privilege, young bin Laden chose to travel<lb />to Afghanistan to help successfully repel<lb />the 10-year Soviet invasion, which ended<lb />in 1989.<lb /><lb />A year before the Soviets withdrew, bin<lb />Laden established his own organization,<lb />Al-Qaeda, an Arabic term meaning othe<lb />base.? He became involved in a series of<lb />regional disputes, including Iraq's invasion<lb />of Kuwait. "<lb /><lb />Bin laden anger toward the United<lb />States escalated after the commencement<lb />of the Persian Gulf War in 1991, according<lb />to his associates. He was particularly upset<lb />with the decision to station American<lb />troops in Saudi Arabia, which he saw as<lb /><lb />olatest and greatest? aggression against the<lb />Islamic world.<lb /><lb />The riches-to -rags leader was indicted<lb />after he was linked to the 1993 World<lb />Trade Center bombing that took six lives.<lb />He was also said to be implicated in the at-<lb />tacks on the U.S. embassies in East Africa,<lb />leaving 224 dead.<lb /><lb />But bin Laden contends that heTs not the<lb />problem.<lb /><lb />The American imposes himself on<lb />everyone, obin Laden said in a 1998 inter-<lb />view with ABC-TV Reporter John Miller.<lb />oAmericans accuse our children in Pales-<lb />tine of being terrorists-those.children, who<lb />have no weapons and have not even<lb />reached maturity. Johnson, deputy director of the<lb />U.S. Department Office of Counter terror-<lb />ism from 1989 to 1993, said intelligence<lb />operatives are not prepared to deal with<lb />the likes of bin Laden.<lb /><lb />oThe fundamental problem the United<lb />States faces in dealing with entities like<lb />bin Laden and his supporters is that the ex-<lb />isting intelligence apparatus is still orga-<lb />nized to defeat a conventional Cold War<lb />enemy, oFrontline,? the PBS documentary<lb />unit. .<lb /><lb />o...How do you penetrate an organiza-<lb />tion which is largely ideological and<lb />bound by religious fervor? <lb />by Dora Muhammad<lb />Staff Writer Final Call<lb /><lb />CHICAGO-The Honorable<lb />Minister Louis Farrakhan<lb />advised President Bush to<lb />move carefully and seek<lb />spiritual guidance as the<lb />U.S. government prepares<lb />to prosecute a war in re-<lb />sponse to the Sept.11 at-<lb />tacks on the United States.<lb />"1, on behalf of all members<lb />of the Nation of Islarn and<lb />on behalf of many. millions<lb />of Muslims here in America<lb />and throughout the world,<lb /><lb />this vicious and atrocious<lb />attack on the United<lb />States," said = Minister<lb />Famakhan during a press<lb />conference held at Mosque<lb />Maryam on September 16<lb />that was transmitted via<lb />satellite throughout the na-<lb />tion and world and broad-<lb />cast on six Internet sites.<lb />"We moum the loss of the<lb />many who have perished in<lb />the national and interna-<lb />tional tragedy.<lb /><lb />"Mr. President I plead with<lb />you that this war that you<lb />intend could trigger that<lb />war that all the scientists of<lb />religion and of war have<lb />desired to escape, the war<lb />that would end all wars, the<lb />War of Arrnageddon.<lb /><lb />| would appeal to the scrip-<lb />tural scientists among us,<lb />those of Judaism, Chrisfian-<lb />ity and Islam, to be utilized<lb />by President Bush to help<lb /><lb />from what the prophets saw<lb />and predicted," he said.<lb /><lb />Denouncing the attacks as<lb />conduct that is absolutely<lb />un-Muslim-like,Min.Farrak-<lb />han also cautioned the pub-<lb />lic against retaliation on<lb />Muslim citizens for the evil<lb />actions of those who only<lb />profess the religion of Is-<lb />lam. While standing in<lb />agreement with the leaders<lb />of this country in their hunt<lb />for the perpetrators, Min.<lb />Farrakhan implored them to<lb /><lb />we<lb />ee<lb />N -_<lb /><lb />N<lb /><lb />lift our voices to condemn<lb /><lb />him understand this hour -<lb /><lb />take the same courage to<lb />examine the effects of U.S.<lb />foreign policy in producing<lb />such heinous crimes against<lb />humanity.<lb /><lb />"A better foreign policy in<lb />America would defeat ter-<lb />rorism forever in the<lb />world", he said. .<lb />Min. Farrakhan addressed<lb />the pubic moved by sadness<lb />and anguish over the hor-<lb />rific suicide missions which<lb />resulted in the loss of<lb />thousands of lives, total<lb />destruction of the World<lb />Trade Center and tremen-<lb />dous damage to the<lb />Pentagon. It was an act of<lb />war. he declared, to target<lb />America's symbols of finan-<lb />cial strength, military might,<lb />architectural genius and<lb />aviation brillance. The great-<lb />est need in this dark hour,<lb />he said, is the "perfect and<lb />unequaled guidance of<lb />God" which has the power<lb />to properly direct the anger<lb />that has been justifiably<lb />incited within the American<lb />people.<lb /><lb />The Minister stressed that<lb />the triumph of the human<lb />spirit that has emerged from<lb />this tragedy can begin the<lb />process of rebuilding spiri-<lb />tual values in this country.<lb />The tragedy united the<lb />country behind its<lb />President, united Democrats<lb />with Republicans, united<lb /><lb />diverse segments of society<lb />and caused the nation to<lb />bow down in prayer and<lb />reflect on God, the Minister<lb />acknowledged.<lb /><lb />"Allah (God) used this trag-<lb />edy, hopefully, to bring a<lb /><lb />great nation to Him, he -<lb /><lb />added, saying that only in<lb />humility can the guidance<lb />of God be heeded. Only<lb />divine guidance from scrip-<lb />tural scientists of all faiths,<lb />the Minister stated, can<lb />prevent the U.S. govern-<lb />ment from violating intema-<lb />tional law in their stated<lb />mission to rip up the nest of<lb /><lb />terrorists.<lb /><lb />With representatives of<lb />Chicago Police and Fire<lb />departments seated before<lb />him, and a host of commu-<lb />nity and religious leaders in<lb />the audience, Min. He also<lb />thanked the media for their<lb /><lb />continual coverage that in- .<lb /><lb />formed the people as events<lb />unfolded.<lb /><lb />Before ending the press<lb />conference with an ecu-<lb />menical prayer, Min. Far-<lb />rakhan said, "I hope that<lb />President Bush and all those<lb />with him will turn this<lb />tragedy into triumph of<lb />right over wrong, of good<lb />over evil, of justice over<lb />injustice, and let not the<lb />blood of those who died be<lb />shed in vain.<lb /><lb />Following the message,<lb />mosques and other venues<lb />where the signal was pulled<lb />down were abuzz with ac-<lb />tivity and hope.<lb /><lb />"I'm very excited and it was<lb />a very meaningful message-<lb />from the Minister today,"<lb />said Jacqueline Jackson,<lb />wife of Rev: Jesse Jackson,<lb />who sat privately with Min.<lb />Farrakhan and wife Mother<lb />Khadijah following " the<lb />press conference. "I hope<lb />his words will be healing<lb />and we will bring this<lb />tragedy to a peaceful and<lb />reconciling solution.?<lb /><lb />Former Chicago School<lb />Board President Florence<lb />Cox told The Final Call that<lb />Min. Fanakhan spoke the<lb />feelings of many Americans<lb /><lb />"His admonition. for. the<lb />leadership of this country to<lb />seek spiritual advice should<lb />be really taken to heart.<lb />When you look at some of<lb />the predictions that have<lb />been made by great minds,<lb />you will find that what we<lb />need is divine guidance. We<lb />need spiritual wisdom with<lb />the hope that all of this will<lb />lead us to peace and inter-<lb />national healing to prevent<lb />this from happening again,"<lb />she said. .<lb /><lb />Rev. Janette Wilson, an<lb />attorney and associate pas-<lb />tor at Cosmopolitan First<lb />Baptist Congregation,<lb />agreed that the answers lie<lb />in God.<lb /><lb />"Me answer is not in peo-<lb />ple," she said, "it is in our<lb />faith and our faith tradi-<lb />tions. It is not yet the end,<lb />but it is a shadow of things<lb />to come. | think God is<lb />speaking to us in a very<lb />critical and definitive man-<lb />ner. When the Minister says<lb />we should pray, that's what<lb />we must do at this moment.<lb />Not respond in anger, but<lb />respond in faith."<lb />Representatives of the<lb />Chicago Police and Fire<lb />departments absorbed the<lb />words of Min. Farrakhan<lb />and expressed appreciation<lb /><lb />for his outreach. "It was a<lb />terrible thing that happened<lb />in New York and it was nice<lb />for Minister Farrakhan to<lb />invite us here to show his<lb />regret also about what hap-<lb />pened," Deputy Fire<lb />Commissioner,Derrick Jac-<lb />kson told The Final Call.<lb /><lb />Commander Bill Power of<lb />the Chicago Police Dept.<lb />added, "This is a show of<lb />unity. People have to un-<lb /><lb />derstand that we're all to-<lb /><lb />gether in this. This is an<lb />attack against America and<lb />we're all united as one<lb />community against that type<lb /><lb />of terrorism.? "<lb />In Los Angeles where the<lb />overflow crowd spilled onto<lb />the street, the sense of<lb />fulfilled expectation filled<lb />the air.<lb /><lb />"He addressed some very<lb />important issues that aré not<lb />being addressed, such as the<lb />certainty of evidence in<lb />seeking justice,"commented<lb />former Congressman<lb />Mervyn Dymally, a<lb />Democrat who represented<lb />parts of Los Angeles. "It<lb />was a direct message calling<lb />upon the country to be even<lb />handed, not to strike be-<lb />cause of suspicion and<lb />without evidence. But these<lb />truths are not very popular<lb />in the media. The media<lb />wants war and that's the<lb />only cry that they want to<lb />cover," he said.<lb /><lb />Kay Benjamin, a _ Los<lb />Angeles actress, said the<lb />tragedy was a very painful<lb />thing "because it was man's<lb />inhumanity to man. I'm so<lb />grateful for the Honorable<lb />Minister Farrakhan's speech<lb />because we got the voice of<lb />reason.<lb /><lb />In Washington, where more<lb />than 1,000 people filled<lb />Lincoln Auditorium for a<lb />satellite feed of the mes-<lb />sage, Pastor Lorman Lykes<lb />of Washington Church told<lb />The Final Call that, the<lb />Minister "has a very unique<lb /><lb />and accurate perspective of<lb />the events as they unfolded<lb />and his perspective on the<lb />political and foreign policy<lb />of America is accurate. |<lb />believe that all Americans<lb />should hear his com-<lb />ments."<lb /><lb />Marilyn Preston Milinghm,<lb />68, past-chair of the<lb />Republic of New Africa,<lb />said she welcomed the<lb />statements but felt one as-.<lb />pect was missed.<lb /><lb />"As one who prayed for and<lb />participated in a preparatory<lb />conference in Geneva,<lb />Switzerland, in preparation<lb /><lb />for the World Conference<lb /><lb />on Racism, | strongly felt<lb />that [the racism conference]<lb />might be the world's last<lb />chance for peace," she said<lb />adding she hoped that the<lb />recently concluded confer-<lb />ence held in Durban, South<lb />Africa, would have been<lb />mentioned during the press.<lb />conference.<lb /><lb />In Harlem, N.Y., a short<lb />distance from "ground zero"<lb />of the attack on the World<lb />Trade Center, more than<lb />1,000 people came. to<lb />Muhammad Mosque No. 7<lb />to listen'to the press confer-<lb />ence. They were<lb />not disappointed.<lb />"Personally, it was what I<lb />needed," said Leonard G.<lb />Dunston, .president emeri-<lb />tus and national political<lb />advisor for the National As-<lb />sociation of Black Social<lb />Workers.<lb /><lb />"Minister Farrakhan did<lb /><lb />several things for me today.<lb />One was to help me get<lb />through this feeling of great<lb />grief for those who have<lb />lost their lives and, two, he<lb />also challenged me to un-<lb />derstand some of the his-<lb />torical and _ political<lb />dynamics that would lead<lb />individuals to commit this<lb />kind of act," said the 61-<lb />year-old who once had of-<lb />fices in the World Trade<lb />Center.<lb /><lb />(Brenda Muhammad,<lb />Charlene Muhammad,<lb />and Corey Muhammad<lb /><lb />contributed to this story.)<lb /><lb />&amp;<lb />e<lb /></p>

Erskine<lb />Bowles, Charlotte<lb />Investment Banker<lb />and former Chief of<lb />Staff for the Clinton<lb />Administration, has<lb />decided that the best<lb />way to serve his coun-<lb />try in this time of<lb />crisis is to run for the<lb />United States Senate.<lb />Bowles admits that he<lb />is not a politician and<lb />not "Pretty", but<lb />thinks he has the mes-<lb />sage and the stuff to<lb />win. His messages<lb />(Early Childhood<lb />Development,<lb /><lb />Healthcare and the<lb />Environment) are very<lb /><lb />'safe and __ typical<lb />Democratic messages.<lb />But having the right<lb />stuff is yet to be deter-<lb />mined. The one thing<lb />Bowles does have.<lb />and have plenty of, is<lb />M-O-N-E-Y.<lb /><lb />Bowles' moneybags<lb />will change the fund-<lb />raising strategies on<lb />both sides of the pri-<lb />mary. On the<lb />Republican side,<lb /><lb />Richard Vinroot and<lb />Liddy Dole have been<lb />counting on financial<lb />support from some of<lb />Bowles' investment<lb />buddies - who will<lb />now, in all likelihood,<lb />give financial support<lb />to their buddy Erskine.<lb />But BowlesT money-<lb />bags will have the<lb />greatest impact on his<lb />Democratic opponents<lb />- Secretary of State<lb />Elaine Marshall and<lb />former House Speaker<lb />Dan Blue. Elaine and<lb />Dan are gonna have to<lb />raise substantially<lb />more money now that<lb />Erskine is in the race.<lb />This is gonna be an<lb /><lb />"odd person out" race<lb /><lb />Seattle's<lb /><lb />bined, a<lb /><lb />executive director of |<lb />: Project MIC.<lb />(Multi-Level Interfaith<lb /><lb />Communities); is working<lb /><lb />to. change those statistics.<lb /><lb />October is.<lb />Domestic<lb /><lb />National.<lb />Violence<lb /><lb />Awareness Month, and -<lb /><lb />Project MIC is sponsoring<lb />a number of. events in-<lb />tended to foster recogni-<lb />tion of the scope of the<lb />ieeepall .<lb /><lb />illiams-Watson, herself<lb />a survivor of domestic<lb />violence, calls her work<lb />what | live for." After<lb />extricating herself 14 years<lb />ago from an abusive mar-<lb />riage to a minister, she has<lb />worked steadily on behalf<lb />of victims. She focuses on<lb />faith- based communities<lb />because of her own deep<lb />roots in the church.<lb /><lb />between Bowles,<lb />Marshall and Blue. It<lb />is unlikely that either<lb />candidate will garner<lb />40 percent of the vote.<lb />Forty percent is the<lb />magic number to<lb />avoid a primary run-<lb />off. This means that<lb />all three candidates<lb />are running for the Ist<lb />or 2nd place and hop-<lb />ing to get the endorse-<lb />ment of the third place<lb />finisher.<lb /><lb />A runoff between<lb />Bowles and Blue<lb />would be exciting and<lb />Elaine Marshall's en-<lb />dorsement might be<lb />the deciding factor. In<lb />this scenario race be-<lb />comes a factor. If<lb />Marshall should finish<lb />third in the primary<lb />she could still run for<lb />reelection as Secretary<lb />of State in 2004. She<lb />may not want to send<lb />the wrong message to<lb />Dan's supporters by<lb />endorsing Bowles. If<lb />Blue is the odd person<lb />out. his endorsement<lb />will be critical .in the<lb />runoff due to the<lb /><lb />strong African<lb />American presence in<lb />Democratic " primary<lb /><lb />races. If Bowles is the<lb />odd person out, he can<lb />be king or queen<lb />maker. His money-<lb />bags will speak vol-<lb />umes.<lb /><lb />This will be an inter-<lb />esting race. Keep your<lb />ear to the ground and<lb />your eyes on the hori-<lb />zon. A couple of early<lb />warning keys to focus<lb />on are the Hunt and<lb />Easley high dollar do-<lb />nors and the diversity<lb />that Marshall and<lb />Bowles have on their<lb />staff. Either way you<lb />cut it, the African<lb />American vote - which<lb />comprises about 30<lb />percent of all<lb />Democratic votes in a<lb />statewide Democratic<lb />primary election - and<lb />M-O-N-E-Y will play<lb />a huge role in the 2002<lb />Democratic primary<lb /><lb />race for the United<lb />States<lb />tuned.<lb /><lb />Senate.
