          <lb />Serving Eastern North Carolina Since poner<lb /><lb />ra<lb />aM<lb /><lb />oGeorge W. Bush i is unalterably<lb />opposed to affirmative action,<lb />favoring something he calls oaf.<lb />firmative access.? Most, if not<lb />all, credible civil rights leaders<lb />are staunchly in support of<lb />affirmative action. To end this<lb />Stalemate, it is time to consider a<lb />compromise.It is time to con-<lb />sider reparations.<lb /><lb />Reparations--the making of<lb />amends for a past wrong or<lb />injury inflicted--is a numbers-<lb />crunching proposal that should<lb />appeal to the business side of the<lb />man now occupying the White<lb />House. It should also be attrac-<lb />tive to activists championing the<lb />cause of economic justice.<lb /><lb />In recent years, countries and<lb />businesses around have been<lb />boldly facing up to their sordid<lb />past by granting reparations to<lb />the oppressed individuals or<lb />groups. Germany is paying $60<lb />billion to Jewish victims of the<lb />Holocaust. Japan has settled<lb />with Korea for the exploitation<lb />of its so-called ocomfort<lb />women,? Swiss banks are<lb />paying for having appropriated<lb />the accounts of. Holocaust .vic-<lb />tims. Austria established a $380<lb />million fund to compensate tens<lb />of thousands of Nazi-era slave<lb />laborers who were born in six<lb /> eastern European cuntries.<lb />- Aborigines have received repa-<lb />rations from Australia a have the<lb />Inuit Indians from the Canadian<lb />: government.<lb /><lb />Even the United States has<lb />formally apologized and paid<lb />- $1.2 billion in reparations to<lb />T Japenese-Americans who were<lb />forced into concentration camps<lb />- during Worlld War II. However,<lb />instead of offering reparations to<lb />African-Americans for what his-<lb /><lb />R mh mG ANG) WMEN|<lb />PORTER AY BUSH'S STAND 0<lb />CTION HELPS PUSH<lb /><lb />Randall Robinson, best known |<lb /><lb />torian Lerone Bennett calls othe<lb />greatest crime in human history,?<lb />Blacks are offered excuses.<lb /><lb />Linda Chavez, president of the<lb />conservative Center for Equal<lb />Opportunity in Washington,<lb />D.C., calls reparations a orecipe<lb />for hatred.? She adds: oThe<lb />problem is time. It is simply<lb />impossible to right an injustice<lb />committed in the distant past,<lb />and any attempt to do so can<lb />create as many difficulties as it<lb />alleviates.?<lb /><lb />When slavery was not oin the<lb />distant past,? an effort was made<lb />to right the injustice. In 1865,<lb />the year the Civil War ended,<lb />Gen. William Tecumseh issued<lb />an order granting 40 acres of<lb />confiscated Confederate land<lb />and a mule to newly freed<lb />slaves. Two years later, Congress<lb />passed a bill granting land to<lb />former slaves.<lb /><lb />However President Andrew<lb />Johnson vetoed that legislation.<lb />For years, groups, that came<lb />together under the umbrella of<lb />the National Coalition of Blacks<lb />for Reparations in America<lb />(NCOBRA) and. the..Nation. of<lb />Islam have been strong and<lb />lonely voices for reparations.<lb />Over the years, they were mar-<lb />ginalized, even by major civil<lb />right groups, for supporting<lb />what was then viewed as a<lb />radical proposal.<lb /><lb />What was considered radical<lb />just a decade ago is quickly<lb />developing into the major civil<lb />rights issue of this new century.<lb />City councils in Detroit,<lb />Chicago, Dallas, Cleveland and<lb />Washington, D.C. have passed<lb />bills supporting the establish-<lb />ment of a federal commission to<lb />study the reparations issue. And<lb /><lb />for his efforts to end apartheid in<lb />South Africa, has written a<lb />widely-praised book: titled, The<lb />Debt: What America Owes<lb />Blacks.<lb /><lb />Proponents of reparations say<lb />they are not asking for a hand-<lb />out. Rather, they are insisting on<lb />long over-due back pay for the<lb />forced slave labor that was never<lb />compensated. Rather going to<lb />individual African-Americans,<lb />any payments would be funneled<lb />into a community development<lb />fund that would do such things<lb />as send impoverished students to<lb />college and help revitalize inner<lb />city neighborhoods.<lb /><lb />The first enslaved Africans<lb />landed at Jamestown, Va. in<lb />1619. The opeculiar institution?<lb />was not officially abolished until<lb />the ratification of the 13th<lb />Amendment in 1865. After 246<lb />years of slavery, segregation and<lb />Jim Crow laws still persisted for<lb />another century.<lb /><lb />In his book, Randall Robinson<lb />cites a University of California-<lb />Berkeley study concludes about<lb />$1.4 trillion .is-.owed.African-<lb />Americans in back wages alone.<lb />Now that Blacks are paid, there<lb /><lb />is still a gap between the wages.<lb /><lb />of Affican-Americans and<lb />Whites.<lb /><lb />According to the Census<lb />Bureau, the annual income for<lb />Black family of four is $35,000.<lb />For a comparable White family,<lb />that figure is $55,000.<lb /><lb />For more than a decade, Rep.<lb />John Conyers (D-Mich.) has<lb />introduced a bill in each session<lb />of Congress that would establish<lb />a federal commission to study<lb />the feasibility of providing repa-<lb />rations to Blacks.<lb /><lb />Bringin it bales. pict fect left to right is Ron Brothme<lb /><lb />i, Tats Ruffin, Tobias atid sal |<lb /><lb />Eric Ruffin. <lb />cally every woman keeps by h her<lb />bedside) writtenT by Helen<lb />"Bridget Joness Diary" is about<lb />a young woman (Bridget Jones)<lb />_ that represents that insecure<lb />_ T person in all of us. Shes insecure<lb />_» about her weight, personality,<lb />looks, and age even though at<lb />- first glance there really is noth-<lb />».ing wrong with her. Bridget<lb />_. Jones yearns for something we<lb />- all want: something real in her<lb />life. She wants a great love life<lb />(her relatives and single friends<lb />constantly inquire), a great com-<lb />panion, exciting job, and more<lb />importantly just the need to be<lb />aware day to day that shes not<lb />alone. -<lb /><lb />The film (directed by first time<lb />director Sharon Maguire and<lb />' written by Richard Curtis and<lb />Andrew Davies) starts off with<lb />Bridget attending one of her<lb />. traditional family-neighborhood<lb />_ get-togethers. In this one scene<lb />we get a full glimpse into<lb />_ Bridgets world; how she yearns<lb />for a purpose, how she sees<lb />- herself as an embarrassment to<lb />_ her family circle and friends and<lb />more importantly herself.<lb /><lb />From there the film takes us<lb />deeper into Bridgets world<lb />through the use of voiceover<lb />narration and how writing a<lb />diary (a habit she takes up after<lb />_ the get-together) changes her<lb />perspective on life, men, and her<lb />career. March 28,2001<lb />in the Daily Reflector.<lb /><lb />Let me lift some of them:<lb /><lb />President Bush wants to spend<lb />millions of dollars on "character"<lb />education in government run<lb />schools. My parents gave me mine<lb />free. No matter how much money<lb />_is spent, it is ulimately up to parents<lb />to decide whether they are willing<lb />to invest the necessary time and<lb />resources to properly rear their own<lb />children. This critical job cannot be<lb />done as one might cook 4<lb />microwave dinner. Good food and<lb />good children take time and the<lb />right ingredients to create.<lb />Numerous studies have shown that<lb /><lb />Dr. George Hawhins<lb />Speaking in Tongues<lb /><lb />Greetings,<lb /><lb />Isn't it strange that the only gift of<lb />the Holy Spirit we are told not to<lb />forbid, is forbidden by so many<lb />believers today? It is as though Paul<lb />never wrote | Corinthians 14:39--<lb />Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly<lb />to prophesy, and do not forbid to<lb />speak with tongues. Why is there so<lb />much controversy concerning the<lb />gift of tongues? How can any glift<lb />of the Holy Spirit be so rejected and<lb />despisedT? Could it be that the gift<lb />of tongues is our spirit praying<lb />directly to God - our spirit giving<lb />Him praise - our mind being<lb />renewed just as the apostle Paul<lb />said? Of course, Satan would try to<lb />stop anything this powerful. The<lb />gift of tongues is the evidence of a<lb />person having received the baptism<lb />in the Holy Spirit. It is the doorway<lb /><lb />| Suejette Jones<lb /><lb />The Christian Sabbath<lb /><lb />ee oe<lb />don't have time for much more than<lb /><lb />~~ gether with the television off? How<lb /><lb />many families see the transferal of<lb />eae and values to their<lb />children as their primary responsi-<lb />bility, ahead of school, and certainly<lb />ahead of culture? " How many<lb />parents, ridden with fault for their<lb />dren, allow them to make their own<lb />moral, cultural. and relational deci-<lb />sions and are afraid to say "no" to<lb />anything a child wants because it<lb /><lb />_ might make the youngster angry?<lb /><lb />No child is taught to kill but he<lb />has to be. taught to love, respect,<lb />honor, and value, not only his own<lb />life, but also the lives of his<lb />classmates, parents and teachers.<lb />He has to experience love and<lb />acceptance. He has to know his life<lb />has purpose and meaning. No<lb />amount of money can do that. Our<lb />success and happiness depends less<lb />on what happens in the White<lb />House than what happens in our<lb />own home<lb /><lb />IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SAY,<lb />IT'S HOW YOU SAY IT<lb /><lb />There's great power in words<lb />if you don't hitch too many of<lb /><lb />Soi 2 iw. ?,? a?<lb /><lb />to living in the supernatural realm<lb />that is open for every believer. When<lb />believers receive the baptism in the<lb />Holy Spirit and thereby filled with<lb />the Holy Spirit, they begin to speak<lb />in tongues supernaturally as the<lb />Spirit gives the vocal inspiration.<lb />This is what happened on the Day<lb />of Pentecost. Acts 2:4-And they<lb />were all filled with the Holy Spirit<lb />and began to speak with other<lb />tongues, as the Spirit gave them<lb />utterance.<lb /><lb />Often, when the revelation of God's<lb />power through the Holy Spirit is<lb />shared with people, the anointing is<lb />SO great that the Holy Spirit "falls"<lb />upon them and they begin to speak<lb />in tongues and magnify God ac-<lb />cording to Acts 10:44-46a which<lb />reads-While Peter was sti!l speaking<lb />these words, the Holy Spirit fell<lb />upon all those who heard the word.<lb />And those of the circumcision who<lb />believed were astonished, as many<lb />as came with Peter, because the gift<lb />of the Holy Spirit had been: poured<lb />out on the Gentiles also. For they<lb />heard them speak with tongues and<lb />magnify God.<lb /><lb />Many times people receive the<lb />baptism of the Holy Spirit when the<lb />hands of a Spirit-baptized believer<lb />are laid upon them. Often, they not<lb />only begin to speak with tongues<lb />but the other gifts of the Holy Spirit<lb />are immediately activated in their<lb />lives. Acts 19:2,6-He said to them,<lb />"Did you receive the Holy Spirit<lb />when you believed?" And they said<lb />to him, "We have not so much as<lb />heard whether there is a Holy<lb />Spirit." And when Paul had laid<lb />hands on them, the Holy Spirit came<lb /><lb />Since then, ma has been toiling<lb />under the taskmaster of sin and<lb />death. But Paul<lb />also said that he spoke in a language<lb />which the angels speak, a heavenly<lb />language.<lb /><lb />I Corinthians 13:1a<lb />Often when expressing our love to<lb />God during our personal times of<lb />praise and worship, we run out of<lb />words in our human language to<lb />express our hearts to God. After<lb />receiving the baptism of the Holy<lb />Spirit,we can, like Paul, begin to<lb />speak in a new heavenly language,<lb />a language without the limitations<lb />of our vocabulary, the same lan-<lb />guage that the angels are worship-<lb /><lb />ping God with, day and night before -<lb /><lb />the throne.<lb /><lb />According to 1Corinthians 14:14,<lb />when we pray in tongues, our spirit<lb />is praying by a supernatural mani-<lb />festation of the Holy Spirit. Our<lb />mind is unfruitful. When Spirit-<lb />baptized believers speak in tongues,<lb />they're bringing praise to God by<lb />speaking of His wonderful works.<lb />Acts 2:11.<lb /><lb />While praying in tongues, the<lb />thoughts don't come from our mind,<lb />nor are they limited to our own<lb />under-standing. Instead the Holy<lb />Spirit is praying through our human<lb /><lb />rads of FK=s<lb /><lb />(Deuteronomy 15:12)<lb /><lb />In the early Christian church,<lb />predominantly those of Jewish<lb />background, some had difficulty<lb />letting go of the regulations of Law<lb /><lb />of Moses. Issues such as circumci- -<lb /><lb />sion, eating of certain meats, keep-<lb />ing Sabbath days, etc., challenged<lb />the teachings of the apostles who<lb />needed to advise that such obser-<lb />vances were no longer acceptable to<lb />the Lord. Since Jesus opened up<lb />the new and living way, His<lb />followers are in no sense of the<lb />word bound by the Jewish Law---<lb />either by the Sabbath days or<lb />Sabbath years.<lb /><lb />So far as the world is concerned, the<lb />great MessiahTs reign of a thousand<lb />years will be the Sabbath for the<lb />world in general, and all who<lb />believe in Christ may enter into rest,<lb />and thus keep a continual Sabbath.?<lb />For we which have believed do<lb />enter into rest.? (Hebrews 4:3) For<lb />the present, Christians are thankful<lb />for any day set aside for the<lb /><lb />ity to worship God and<lb />felowship with fellow Christians.<lb />The Christian " is hoa egy<lb />physical 4 or it<lb />pa ar tn on physical Ayn It he<lb />and lasting rest only broken<lb />Goubt in Jesus Christ. They<lb />tell you. There is no<lb />, director who can direct<lb /><lb />you like an audience.<lb />Fanny Brice<lb /><lb />TO THE EDITOR:<lb />Although the climate where we<lb />live, the kind of work we do, and<lb />the company we work for deter-<lb />mine to some degree how we dress<lb />on the job, there are certain types<lb />of degrees that just aren't appropri-<lb />ate for the work place. And for<lb /><lb />spirit directly toT the Father,<lb />Ephesians 6-18 and Romans<lb />8:26,27.<lb /><lb />When we receive the baptism in the<lb />Holy Spirit, we are to begin to<lb />speak! The Holy Spirit will give the<lb />vocal inspiration. We cannot speak<lb />two languages at one time. We are<lb />to speak in our heavenly language.<lb />We are not to think in this language<lb />since "our understanding is unfruit-<lb />ful" when speaking in tongues.<lb />What are we then, to speak? Acts<lb />2:4 says And they were all filled<lb />with the Holy Spirit and began to<lb />speak with other tongues, as the<lb />Spirit gave them utterance.<lb /><lb />All languages are made up of words<lb />that are a combination of sounds. If<lb />the Spirit is to give us the<lb />enablement. or vocal inspiration,<lb />like on the Day of Pentecost we<lb />must begin to speak but not in a<lb />language we know. We, like those<lb />early believers must begin to speak<lb />sounds out loud. As we begin to<lb />center our thoughts on Jesus, having<lb />asked for and received the baptism<lb /><lb />in the Holy Spirit by faith, we must<lb /><lb />begin to speak. ItT will be us<lb />speaking, as they did on the Day of<lb /><lb />Pentecost. The Holy Spirit will then<lb /><lb />give us the ability. The language<lb />that will begin to flow fforn us will<lb />be liké "nivers of living water" as it<lb />flows from our innermost being.<lb />Even as God made the water hard<lb />under Peter's feet when he steppedT<lb />out of the boat and began walking<lb />on the water, the Holy Spirit will<lb />make the sounds "hard" under our<lb />tongues when we begin to boldly<lb />speak out loud.<lb /><lb />ath<lb />Note: This is an argument narrative<lb /><lb />about Black Politics in the Post-<lb />Segregated Era<lb /><lb />Forcefully ringing changes on a<lb />remark by Ralph Ellison (a noted<lb />black writer)-that segregation was<lb />wrongly seen as oan opaque steel<lb />jug with the Negroes inside waiting<lb />for some black Messiah?-Adolph<lb />Reed Jr. uses these essays to<lb />examine where black leadership has<lb />failed and where black action may?<lb />yet succeed,<lb />In urban politics, Reed argues,<lb />black candidatesT need for the white<lb />swing vote, combined with thes<lb />clamor for jobs and growth, means<lb />white leverage over black aspira-<lb />tions; thus Atlanta-based Delta<lb />Airlines became a kingmaking force<lb />among AtlantaTs black elite, and the<lb />National Conference of Black<lb />Mayors echoed Ronald Reagan's<lb />call for ghetto oenterprise zones?.<lb />Reed, who teaches political science<lb />at the New School for Social<lb />Research, damns the idea that black<lb />Americans ohold a status similar to<lb />? to<lb /><lb />oEven if you're on the right track, |<lb /><lb />- Alay combinalin fee Ceiaiea:<lb /><lb />dress in the work place is the<lb /><lb />a of modesty.
