Alcorn, former presi-<lb />dent of the Dallas Branch NAACP,<lb />knew right away that something<lb />smelled fishy.<lb />"I had been very active in support-<lb />ing that lawsuit on behalf of the<lb />NAACP, so | knew that I must<lb />investigate this to see just what was<lb />really going on. I believe that we<lb />must confront this. The NNPA<lb />should not be holding meetings<lb />there until the hotel chain explains<lb />what or how they intend to settle up<lb />with the many Blacks that have filed<lb />lawsuits against them. | hope that<lb />this is not some way that some of<lb />our most respected Black newspa-<lb />pers and the leadership of the<lb />NAACP is using to get a few<lb />crumbs on the backs of common<lb />African-Americans who have been<lb />blatantly discriminated against. We<lb />should not be doing business with<lb />Adams T Mark. And if Adams Mark<lb />has not done anything to make up<lb />for their crimes against those people<lb />then we will just have to get the<lb />batteries out for our bullhorns and<lb />et ready to take care of business.<lb />he Black newspaper is one of our<lb />greatest institution and if the<lb />(publishers) are trying to pull o<lb />something here that is underhanded<lb /><lb />against. Black people then they<lb />should really be ashamed of them<lb />selves. ? .<lb /><lb />Rev. Michael Bell of Fort Worth<lb />Texas, a prominent member of: the<lb />Tarrant County Local Organizing<lb /><lb />Committee and a CACR member<lb /><lb />said that he would bring a bus load<lb />of protesters to the NNPA confer-<lb />ence to participate in any action that<lb />Alcorn wishes to perform. "What is<lb />happening with the Adams Mark<lb /><lb />\ \<lb /><lb />by Clinton in August 1999. But<lb />the US Senate never held a<lb />hearing on his confirmation .<lb />because of staunch opposition<lb />from U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, a<lb />Raleigh Republican.<lb /><lb />In a politically charged move,<lb />Clinton sent the name of Wynn<lb />and seven other previously nomi-<lb />nated appellate judges back to the<lb />Senate less than three weeks<lb />before he leaves office.<lb /><lb />Wynn inclusion was particularly<lb />pointed. because Clinton and<lb /><lb />Hotel situation is really indicative<lb />of what has been happening in<lb />different parts of the country.<lb />People seem to have a very short<lb />memory. We need to remember<lb />what happened to bring about this<lb />situation and then act on that. We<lb />seem to want to ignore what has<lb />been done in terms of right and<lb />wrong. And we can not do that, if<lb />we intend to profess that we stand<lb />for all Black people, as we should.<lb /><lb />"It seems that the leadership of the<lb /><lb />group that made the determination<lb />to meet there at Adams Mark, they<lb />are oblivious to or is ignoring what<lb />Adams Mark has done in the past.<lb />This is similar in other situations<lb />like for instance we've gone back to<lb />Denny's, is premature. But what<lb />needs to be done is that the<lb />leadership of the journalist group is<lb />be more sensitive to what's going on<lb />and not ignoring others. Also let me<lb />tell you what I really think about<lb />this whole mess! It seems like<lb />apparently somebody is willing to<lb />carry the ball for Adams Mark and<lb />has not touched bases with the<lb />community on it and so that's why<lb />we're going to go over there to<lb />remind them of those hurt individu-<lb />als who they have seemed to have<lb />forgotten, The NAACP just graded<lb />them with a'"D minus ? about two or<lb />three months ago. We must protest<lb />this wrong until they resolve this<lb />issue with those people who were<lb />harmed by their racist practices!<lb />They must move quickly to resolve<lb />the content of the lawsuit." During<lb />the month of December 1999, a<lb />CNN news report carried extensive<lb />interviews and press conferences of<lb />several lawsuits aimed at Adams<lb />Mark by hundreds of Black hotel<lb />guests who spoke of gross discrimi-<lb />nation allegations. Federal investi-<lb />gations of those lawsuits uncovered<lb />information so gross that both the<lb />federal and state of Florida filed<lb /><lb />discrimination lawsuits against<lb />Adams Mark as well. They accused<lb />it of things such as charging Blacks<lb />more than whites, offering them less<lb />desirable rooms and putting security<lb />restrictions on them, During that<lb />time according to the CNN report,<lb />Fred S, Kummer, president and<lb />chief executive of the privately held<lb />chain declined to comment on the<lb />Justice suit until he had<lb /><lb />an opportunity to read it, The report<lb /><lb />Lj<lb /><lb />ii<lb /><lb />Photo by Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />others have suggested that Helms<lb />opposes the nomination because:<lb />Wynn is black.<lb /><lb />Helms has maintained that 15-seat<lb /><lb />court is functioning efficiently T -<lb /><lb />and does not need any more<lb /><lb />judges, despite five vacancies and- o<lb /><lb />no north Carolina representation.<lb />the court, which is one step below T<lb /><lb />the U.S. Supreme Court, hears T o<lb />fromNorth: -<lb /><lb />federal appeals<lb />Carolina South Carolina, Virgina,<lb />West Virgina and Maryland.<lb /><lb />acting assistant attorney general in<lb />charge of the civil rights division.<lb />said "This is the first time that Civil<lb />Rights Division and the Department<lb />of Justice has filed against a hotel<lb />chain on a_ nationwide basis. ?<lb />Attorney General Janet Reno and<lb />Florida Attorney General Bob.<lb /><lb />Butterworth, who announced a re-° -<lb /><lb />lated lawsuit accusing the hotel<lb /><lb />chain of violating state consumer -<lb /><lb />protection laws, joined Lee at a<lb />Washington news conference. "In<lb />violating its guests T civil rights,<lb />Adams Mark also trampled on their<lb />rights as consumers, Tourism and.<lb /><lb />recreation are Florida's lifeblood, °-<lb /><lb />Through its blatant racist policies,<lb />Adams Mark has sent the unmistak-<lb />able message that at some places in<lb />Florida, Blacks are not welcome."<lb />Strong charges against the hotel for<lb />sure. As for the AAN&amp;I article the.<lb />publisher Roy Douglas Malonson, a<lb />member of NNPA said during that:<lb />time that he would not stay at the-<lb />hotel while attending the conference.<lb />he said that he would instead sleep:<lb />in another hotel-in pretests of the<lb />NNPA's decision. "I have not.<lb />changed my plans. We have to learn;<lb />that money is not everything. We: .<lb />must walk what we talk and that Ts:<lb />the bottom line. Too many Black.<lb />people have been hurt by Adams;<lb />Marks racist policies." Another<lb />group who has thrown their support.<lb />behind the CACR is members of the.<lb />New Black Panther Party. They too T<lb />intend to be there to support this<lb />cause. oIn reference to the issue and<lb />the New Black Panther Party is. that<lb />they need to be shut down by alt<lb />means necessary, We need to go to<lb />the extent of hunt their hotels down<lb />if possible. If they are to continue te<lb />bring forth racism in this blunt a<lb />matter and just ignore Black people<lb />of being actual human beings, theri<lb />we need to take care of them. ? The<lb /><lb />protesters said that they intend to<lb />march on: the hotel on Wednesday,<lb />January 10, 200lat 12-: 00 Noon<lb />just minuets before the NNPA's<lb />Welcoming Ceremonies and the<lb />meeting of its Board of Directors,<lb />They said want as many concerned<lb /><lb />people as possible to join then... &amp;<lb />ok... 8<lb />all the<lb /><lb />there. We don Tt know how many<lb />of you listen to Tom Joyner in the<lb />*.* morning, but, it Ts one of the few<lb />shows-where one can get-important in-<lb />pal and good music. If you are a<lb />jular you know that every Tuesday and<lb />T ursday, Tavis Smiley, BET host, does<lb />a, commentary informing us of the<lb />week Ts injustice against our people. For<lb />thé last eight weeks, he has been trying<lb />to speak with CompUSA about their lack<lb />of advertising dollars spent in our neigh-<lb />borhoods or towards our people. And for<lb />the last eight weeks, he has been ig-<lb />nored. Thousands of receipts were sent<lb />in from people who bought products<lb />from CompUSA, but were protesting.<lb />Still no response from CompUSA and<lb />not.so much as a phone call to make an<lb />appointment to talk.<lb /> Well, finally, we have a response from<lb />CompUSA. They are suing for defamation<lb />of character! Can Tt even express how up-<lb /><lb />setting it was to hear Smiley near tears<lb />that morning, with Joyner talking about<lb />how they were talking about taking his<lb />show off, if Travis didn Tt stop giving his<lb />commentary!<lb /><lb />Thousands of hate groups are allowed<lb />speak against us on a daily basis. They<lb />march, they have talk shows, they even<lb />have websites. However, we are told to<lb />stop when trying to make a large corpora-<lb />tion have a simple discussion on why they<lb />are ignoring us in their advertisements,<lb />while saying that we don Tt buy enough<lb />from their stores to have to worry about<lb />us. We are outraged!<lb /><lb />So, in the midst of you sending the<lb />usual junk e-mail, please send a note to at<lb />least 10 people, letting them know how<lb />far we Tve come in the last 100 years.<lb />Once this is known, you can only blame<lb />yourself when things don Tt happen.<lb /><lb />They Tve only shown us again how little<lb />they think of African Americans and that<lb />they don Tt néed to address our com-<lb />plaints "just tell us to Shut Up!<lb /><lb />Reflecting back, what you see,<lb />is all you're ever going to get<lb /><lb />ho is responsible for the<lb />massive carloads, the truck-<lb />loads, the boatloads, the<lb />shiploads of illegal drugs<lb />that enter the U.S. on a con-<lb />Stant basis? ;<lb /><lb />To paraphrase what a popular cartoon<lb />character once said: oWe have met the ene-<lb />my...and it is us. ?<lb /><lb />The new President of Mexico, Vincente<lb />Fox, said so correctily the other day that<lb />the U.S. should deal with its own drug<lb />habit and not be reluctant to look in the<lb />mirror at the millions and millions of ad-<lb />dicts and dealers who run the economic en-<lb />gine that keep the illegal drug business<lb />booming in America.<lb /><lb />Stop playing the blame game with his<lb />nation (Mexico) in connection with the nar-<lb />Cotics problem, Fox admonished.<lb /><lb /> oThe United States, year after year,<lb />blames us (Mexico) for drug trafficking.<lb />Why? ? Fox asks. oWho lets the drugs into<lb /><lb />the United States? Who is doing gigantic<lb />business in the United States? ?<lb /><lb /> Corrupt police and government officials,<lb />we think, along with despicable drug deal-<lb />ers and any other links to the illegal drug<lb />underground.<lb /><lb />The war on drugs has been proven to be a<lb />farce. The only way to deal with the massive<lb />drug problem in America is to greatly reduce<lb />demand, which will only happen through in-<lb />creased drug-treatment programs "not harsh<lb /><lb />_punishment and incarceration.<lb /><lb />The burgeoning prison population,<lb />swelled mostly by small-time drug users<lb />and dealers, is not the way to tackle the un-<lb />resolved matter of drug-use and abuse in<lb />America. Again, it is treatment, treatment,<lb />treatment.<lb /><lb />Take a look in the (cocaine) mirror<lb />America and you may get a clearer look at<lb />the monster who is causing your venal<lb />problem of addiction. You see, what you<lb />see, is staring back.<lb /><lb />There is nothing more dangerous than to<lb />build a society, with a large segment of peo-<lb />ple in that society, who feel that they have<lb />no stake in it; who feel that they have noth-<lb />ing to lose. People who have a stake in their "<lb /><lb /> Society, protect that society, but when they<lb />don't have it, they unconsciously want to<lb />ee, destroy it.<lb /><lb />Rev Dr. Martin Luther King Jr<lb /><lb />istory is an'excellent teacher of<lb /><lb />the future. The only requirement<lb /><lb />is to listen, think and analyze.<lb /><lb />In 1968, when the Republican<lb /><lb />candidate sought the presidency<lb />of the United States, he was vigorously at-<lb />tacked by the Black civil rights establishment.<lb />He was called. a racist and anti-Black. He was<lb />said to be for the rich, while forgetting the<lb />poor. Finally, it was believed by the civil<lb />rights establishment that this candidate would<lb />do away with welfare and appoint anti-Black<lb />judges.<lb /><lb />Let Ts examine what happened. That candi-<lb />date, (eventually) President Richard M.<lb />Nixon, launched the federal minority enter-<lb />prise program. As a result of this Republican<lb />effort, we now have a whole new minority<lb />business class all over America. The program<lb />produced many new franchises, automobile<lb />dealerships, radio station ownerships and<lb />high-tech small businesses. Between 1970 to<lb />1976, the Nixon-Ford Republican administra-<lb />tions created more than 500,000 new minority<lb />businesses. Moreover, no administration since<lb />that time has remotely come close to that ef-<lb />fort. Early on, the liberal Black and White<lb /><lb /> voices declared the program a cop-out and an<lb /><lb />effort to do away with social programs.<lb /><lb />In addition to this trailblazing, business de-<lb />velopment venture by Presidents Nixon and<lb />Ford, President Ronald Reagan Ts tenure intro-<lb /><lb />/ nl<lb />Black business survival really<lb />lurks in affirmative access T<lb /><lb />by Samuel J. Cornelius<lb /><lb />: Deas Editor,<lb /><lb />duced America to the oEnterprise Zone ? pro-<lb />gram for urban and rural distressed areas.<lb />Throughout all this productivity, our so-called<lb /> oBlack leaders ? continued to attack the pro-<lb />grams, while secreriy becoming millionaires,<lb />participating in the very programs they were<lb />criticizing.<lb /><lb />Now that Gov. George W. Bush is on the<lb />cusp of becoming the 43rd president of the<lb />United States of America. some of these same<lb />so-called leaders are out of the woodwork<lb />with the same old tired arguments we heard<lb />30 years ago.<lb /><lb />Black voters now have 4 unique opportuni-<lb />ty to again turn our attention from welfare to<lb />economics. But, if we continue concentrating<lb />on civil rights and social programs, we will<lb />continue to stay on the bottom rung of the<lb />ladder.<lb /><lb />Bush has been a small business owner and<lb />leans heavily in the business arena. This<lb />bodes well for Black-business owners who<lb />need access to capital, markets and other<lb />means to make their businesses grow and<lb />prosper.<lb /><lb />And, unless we are able to get the oaffirma-<lb /><lb />tive access ? proposed by Bush, Black busi-<lb />ness developmeni and growth will come to a<lb />screeching halt.<lb /><lb />(Cornelius, a long-time Republican activist,<lb />served Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald<lb />Ford and Ronald Reagan: Currently, he ts<lb />secretary treasurer of the Krul Group, Inc., an<lb />investment broker group.)<lb /><lb />| Mae iga te NARCR ie you get<lb /> oride from<lb /><lb />by Kevin Martin<lb /><lb />veryone played ohide and<lb />seek ? as a child. This<lb />year was no exception.<lb /><lb />lies ohide ? equal justice and civil rights<lb />issues in campaigns for Black voters to<lb />seek, and then use them to win their sup-<lb />port. This year, these issues included po-<lb />lice brutality, racial profiling, hate-crime<lb />legislation and Confederate heritage dis-<lb />plays. I question why these concerns only<lb />arose close to election time.<lb /><lb />The NAACP continues its boycott of<lb />South Carolina over the Confederate Bat-<lb />tle flag. The group succeeded in moving<lb />the flag from atop the Statehouse to the<lb />grounds, but is now pushing for its com-<lb />plete removal from sight. The NAACP al-<lb />so pressured Texas Governor and then-<lb />Republican presidential nominee George<lb />W. Bush to remove commemorative<lb />plaques in some state buildings in Texas<lb />that contained that same flag. Bush did<lb />the right thing and replaced the plaques.<lb /><lb />What Ts wrong with the NAACP Ts ac-<lb />tions? Nothing. The problem is that they<lb />were being partisan in their outrage.<lb />They did not, for example, call upon De-<lb />mocratic nominee Al Gore to pressure<lb />his home-state legislators in Tennessee<lb />to remove KKK founder Nathan Bedford<lb />Forrest Ts name from a state park and<lb />highway.<lb /><lb />Black voters were also targeted by<lb />commercials featuring a truck dragging a<lb />chain behind it along with the voice of<lb />James Byrd Ts sister criticizing Bush for<lb />not supporting hate-crime legislation.<lb />(Byrd was dragged to death behind a<lb />truck driven by three White men). In my<lb />home state of Maryland " " which is also<lb />the home of the NAACP " there was<lb />barely a raised eyebrow when two White<lb />men harassed a carload of elderly Black<lb />women for 20 miles and finally loosed a<lb />shotgun blast at close range which ended<lb />the life of one of the women. Maryland<lb />has hate-crimes legislation on the books.<lb />However, both suspects were only<lb />charged with second-degree murder. But,<lb />our state also has a Democrat governor<lb />and a member of the Kennedy family<lb />serving as lieutenant governor. That<lb /><lb />to make a di . It appears<lb />a free<lb />the NAACP. If tye are a Re-<lb /><lb />Democratic leaders and their Black al- -<lb /><lb />"workin<lb /><lb />Democrats, NAACP playing<lb />hide n seek on rights issues<lb /><lb />publican, stand by to stand by.<lb /><lb />The same rule applies to police brutali-<lb />ty. In Philadelphia, (there a Black, Demo-<lb />cratic mayor), there was an appeal for<lb />calm this past summer when an escaping<lb />Black criminal was caught and beaten by<lb />White and Black officers "caught on<lb />tape. In New York City (White, Republi-<lb />can mayor running for Senate against<lb />First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton at the<lb />time), Al Sharpton and others took their<lb />high-profile protest to city hall and<lb />Washington when officers shot a Black<lb />man to death in a confusing and regret-<lb />table melee. There is no excuse for police<lb />brutality, but the selective and partisan<lb />Outrage in these cases ought to be a crime<lb />as well.<lb /><lb />There also seems to be a willingness to<lb />accommodate Democrats on the issues of<lb />racial profiling. During the campaign,<lb />Gore promised that, if elected, he would<lb />sign an executive order outlawing racial<lb />profiling, which has been at the forefront<lb />of the news for years now. Why didn Tt he<lb />call upon President Bill Clinton to sign<lb />an executive order earlier? Why would<lb />Blacks have to wait until after the elec-<lb />tion for racial profiling to be outlawed? It<lb />seemed to be little more than a campaign .<lb />issue for Gore, and its exploitation went<lb />unchallenged.<lb /><lb />In Washington, the Congressional<lb />Black Caucus (CBC) seems willing to<lb />withhold their support from 38 former<lb />and current Secret Service agents who<lb />claim in a, federal lawsuit that they<lb />were victims of racism from within the<lb />Clinton White House. Yet, when CBC<lb />member Cynthia McKinney accused<lb />Gore of having a low oNegro Tolerance<lb />Level ? when it was reported that he<lb />knew of limits on the number of Black<lb />agents on his security detail, outraged<lb />Democratic leaders pressured her to re-<lb />tract her words,<lb /><lb />The time has long since passed for our<lb /><lb />so-called Black leaders to hold the De-<lb /><lb /> mocratic Party to the same standards they<lb /><lb />hold the Republican Party to when it<lb />comes to the issues that are most impor-<lb />tant to us. On<lb />Nov. 11, even as Americans gathered to<lb />break ground for the much-anticipated Na-<lb />tional World War II Memorial on The Mall<lb />in our nation Ts Capitol, some ungrateful<lb />people made plans to disrupt work on the<lb />project. MARTIN LUTHER KING, R.<lb /><lb />UAL HOUSING<lb />OPPORTUNITY<lb /><lb />Noted lawyer pursues Blacks T<lb />~ bias Claims ~~<lb /><lb />By Ayana Jones<lb />Tribune Staff Writer<lb /><lb />Willie E. Gary is one of: the<lb />nation Ts most successful trial law-<lb />yers. And this week, he set his<lb />eyes-on one of the nation Ts most<lb />powerful corporations ~<lb />Microsoft.<lb /><lb />Gary represents seven current and<lb />former Microsoft employees who<lb />have filed a $5 billion discrimina-<lb />tion suit against computer soft-<lb />ware giant, alleging racial bias.<lb /> oWhat is $5 billion to<lb />Microsoft? ? Gary asked. oYou<lb />have to hit them in their pockets. ?<lb />The suit filed in the U.S District<lb />Court is considered one of the<lb />largest discrimination lawsuits on<lb />behalf of a class of African-<lb />Americans.<lb /><lb />One of the plaintiffs, Rhan<lb />Jackson, had previously sued the<lb />company for discrimination but<lb />the suit was amended to include<lb />Six more employees and to at-<lb />tempt class-action status that<lb />could add hundreds more.<lb /><lb />The complaint alleges discrimina-<lb />tion in evaluations, compensation,<lb />promotions, wrongful termination<lb />and retaliation.<lb /><lb />Gary said that the high monetary<lb /><lb />' figure, which includes compensa-<lb /><lb />tory and punitive damages, is<lb />commensurate with Microsoft's<lb />sizé. With $22.6 billion in sales,<lb />the Seattle-based firm is the<lb />largest computer software com-<lb />pany in the world.<lb /><lb />But Gary cites Microsoft's Black<lb />employment figures as evidence<lb />that it does little to hire or retain<lb />African-Americans. In 1999,<lb />Microsoft employed 21,429 peo-<lb />ple, of which only 553, or roughly<lb />2.5 percent, were Black. The firm<lb />didn Tt fare any better on the<lb />management level. Of the firm Ts<lb />5,155 managers, only 83, or 1.6<lb />percent. were Black.<lb /><lb /> oThese numbers demonstrate to<lb />the world that Microsoft is not<lb />interested in hiring or promoting<lb />Blacks, ? Gary stated.<lb /><lb /> oJust as the Justice Department<lb />has sought to stop their anti-trust<lb />behavior, we are seeking to<lb />change their culture. Their com-<lb /><lb />pany should look more like.<lb />America, and be just as diverse. "<lb /> oTheir business partners and po-<lb />tential business partners all over<lb /><lb />the world should be aware of their<lb /><lb />poor treatment of. Blacks, and<lb /> make sure they are not tarnished<lb />by. doing. business- with a tech<lb />company that has adopted a<lb />plantation mentality from a past<lb />era, ? he. said.<lb /><lb />From humble beginnings, Gary<lb />has become the legal equivalent<lb />of David against corporate<lb />Goliaths<lb /><lb />Gary rose above poverty to be-<lb />come a multimillion-dollar, - na-<lb />tionally known trial attorney. He<lb />spent his boyhood in the small<lb />town of Indiantown, Fla., working<lb />with his family in the cane fields.<lb />His determination to learn led him<lb />to Shaw University and then on to<lb />study law at the North Carolina<lb />Central University.<lb /><lb />He said he saw law practice a as a<lb />way to do the most for his family<lb />and his people.<lb /><lb />Gary started off as a one-man<lb />operation when he opened the<lb />first Black law firm in Martin<lb />Country, Fla., in 1974, Today he<lb />has a thriving national partnership<lb />~ Gary, Williams, Parenti, Finney,<lb />Lewis, McManus, Watson and<lb />Sperando.<lb /><lb />Gary litigates complex cases in-<lb />volving product liability, medical<lb />malpractice, corporate obad faith ?<lb />dealings, personal injury and<lb />wrongful death, and he has won<lb />multimillion-dollar verdicts from<lb />major corporations over the past<lb />25 years.<lb /><lb />Five months ago, he won a $720<lb />million discrimination suit against<lb />Disney World. Several years ago,<lb />he won $500 million from the<lb />Loewen Group for businessman<lb />Jeremiah O. Keefe. At the time, it<lb />was one of the nation Ts largest<lb />damage awards.<lb /><lb />In the Microsoft litigation, the<lb />district court must first decide<lb /><lb />whether to approve class-action.<lb />status for the case, a decision that<lb />could take two or three months.<lb />Gary said he hopes to go to trial<lb />within a year.<lb /><lb />At a Washington, D.C., news<lb />conference Wednesday, four of<lb />the plaintiffs said they were<lb /><lb />assed for promotions, paid<lb />guns oendured 3<lb /><lb />hostile hg environment and<lb />were subjected to retaliation for<lb /><lb />bringing their concerns to tman- i |<lb /><lb />agement,<lb /><lb />Rhan Jackson, a former account<lb />executive in the Washington of-<lb />fice, said. the- three Black mem-<lb />bers of his working team - were<lb />held back for promotions while<lb />the non-Black employees got<lb />ahead.<lb /><lb />Jackson stated that he took his<lb />concerns to Microsoft chief ex-<lb />ecutive Steve Ballmer before<lb />filing his suit, but was rebuffed.<lb /><lb />- oHe said he didn Tt feel there was<lb /><lb />anything he could do, ? Jackson<lb />said. oWe really didn Tt want to<lb />have to be here today. ?<lb /><lb />Microsoft spokesman Dean Katz<lb />said Tuesday that his company is<lb />committed to diversity.<lb /> oMicrosoft does not tolerate dis-<lb />crimination in any of its employ-<lb />ment practices, and we are<lb />committed to treating all of our<lb />employees fairly. We take these<lb />kinds of issues very seriously, ?<lb />Katz said.<lb /><lb /> oWe Tre pleased with the progress<lb />we Tve made in increasing the<lb />number of minorities working at<lb />Microsoft. That said, there are<lb />still a number of things we can do<lb />to stimulate interest among mi-<lb />norities in the technical fields, ?<lb />Katz stated, citing the nearly $100<lb />million in grants Microsoft has<lb />given to organizations to stimu-<lb />late interest in technological jobs<lb />among women and minorities.<lb />He noted that Microsoft is known<lb />for its charitable contributions,<lb />some of which have benefited<lb />minorities.<lb /><lb /> oThat makes it more disappoint-<lb />ing that they do not treat their<lb />Black employees respectfully, ?<lb />Gary responded.<lb /><lb /> oThis is hypocritical on their part.<lb />On one hand they give money to<lb />charitable causes, but at the same<lb /><lb />time they rob their own Black<lb />employees of their dignity by<lb />repeatedly passing them over for<lb />promotions and not granting them<lb />equal pay of their white counter-<lb />parts. This is a disturbing pattern<lb />that must end. ?<lb /><lb />TRADE OIL CO<lb />PROUDLY<lb />SALUTES<lb /><lb />DR. <lb />Roadblocks to Revival "<lb /><lb />Greetings in the Matchless name<lb />Of Jesus Christ:<lb /><lb />shi For many years now, | have<lb />- believed God for a mighty. move<lb />of His Spirit that will bring great<lb />revival to the church and a<lb />glorious harvest of souls The<lb />church that will experience this<lb />_ Visitation of God will not he an<lb />organization or institution but a<lb />living organism, the body of<lb />Christ<lb />As | have waited expectantly for<lb />this revival, the Holy Spirit has<lb />impressed upon me that the<lb />church must first be delivered<lb />from five areas of wrong thinking<lb />that hinder<lb /><lb />_<lb /><lb />ae open ote ie of ess, isnt<lb />Been ye<lb /><lb /> oBut when it becomes obsesses<lb /><lb />t streams of truth from<lb />owing into it, Elitism, legalism,<lb /><lb />| and judgmental attitudes are al-<lb />most always the result.<lb /><lb />A denomination serves a purpose<lb /><lb />~ similar to the scaffolding used to<lb /><lb />build a structure.<lb /><lb />Scaffolding is not intended to<lb />obscure the building permanently<lb />After serving its purpose, the<lb />scaffolding is dismantled so the<lb />real building can be seen.<lb /><lb />Constructed of human ideologies<lb />and dogmas, -denominationalism<lb />is a man-made structure that<lb />obscures the true church Christ is<lb />building. For the life of Christ to<lb />be seen: in the church, The<lb />scaffolding of denominationalism<lb />must be removed.<lb /><lb />2. Human traditions. Tradition is<lb />an established pattern or thought<lb />or behavior handed down by word<lb />or example from one generation<lb />to another. The Pharisees once<lb /><lb />asked Jesus, Why do Your disci-<lb /><lb />ples transgress the tradition of the<lb />elders? For they do not wash their<lb />hands when they eat? (Mitt. 15;2,<lb />NKJV).<lb /><lb />Jesus condemned their hypocrisy,<lb /><lb />_ and He accused them of "making<lb /><lb /> from one generation to another.<lb /> Such traditional misconceptions<lb /><lb />hinder the Holy Spirit from re-<lb />i with self-preservation, it becomes "<lb />|} a darn that dangerously limits<lb /><lb />vealing rigid truth to us.<lb />The contemporary church must<lb /><lb />return to the Word of God and.<lb />allow the Spirit of Truth to teach<lb /><lb />us.<lb /><lb />The apostle Paul declared he was<lb />"exceedingly zealous for the watt<lb />tions" of his fathers until -<lb />pleased God. to reveal His Son i in<lb />me" (Gal. 1:14-16) Like Paul we<lb />will be delivered from devotion to<lb />religious traditions only as the<lb />Holy Spirit reveals Christ in us.<lb /><lb />3. Prejudice. Those unreasonable<lb />biases, judgments and opinions<lb />that breed suspicion, intolerance<lb />and hatred have no place in<lb />Christ's church. Paul declared that<lb />after faith has come our prejudi-<lb />cial distinctions do not exist in<lb />Christ (Gal. 3325-28). He admon-<lb />ished Timothy to obey his instruc-<lb />tions "without prejudice, doing<lb />nothing with partiality" (1 Tim.<lb />5:21).<lb />prejudice against people of an-<lb /><lb />other race, gender, sect, class or<lb /><lb />status will keep us from receiving<lb />God's truth. Christ's true church<lb />will be free from the destructive<lb />power<lb /><lb />4.Culture. Perhaps nothing is<lb />more basic to our natural thinking<lb />than our culture those concepts<lb /><lb />Progressive Freewill Baptist Church<lb />Bishop T.L. Davis is shown with church members as they gathered for opening service at their new Shown posing for the "M' Voice camera is Brother Donald Gorham with his two brothers, his<lb /><lb />churc<lb /><lb />on Hooker Rd. Bishop T.L. Davis invites everyone to stop by for Sunday service.<lb /><lb />Perils 5 from our bondage to<lb />culture so Christ in us can move<lb /><lb />in and through any culture. He<lb /><lb />brings a new and higher way of.<lb />life that transcends the boundaries |<lb /><lb />of culture..<lb />5.Customs. A custom is any<lb />long-established uniform practice<lb /><lb />» instituted by common consent of<lb /><lb />a society. Such customs, which<lb /><lb />take on the force of unwritten law, .<lb /><lb />are enforced by social disapproval<lb />of any violation. Christ has freed.<lb />us from the tyranny of any human<lb />standard of righteousness im-<lb />posed by society and has put His<lb />standard of righteousness within<lb />us by the Holy Spirit, who writes<lb />His laws upon our hearts. Paul<lb />denounced some Jewish<lb />Christians who attempted to add<lb />their customs as requirements. for<lb />salvation. To do so, he said, meant<lb />the vicarious sacrifice of Christ<lb />was not quite enough to effect<lb />salvation (see Gal 2 21) Wherever<lb />the church has. included demands<lb />of customs as criteria for salva-<lb />tion, it must repent and return to<lb />complete faith in the work of<lb />Calvary.<lb /><lb />The contemporary church must<lb />allow the Holy Spirit to speak<lb />God's truth to us, convicting our<lb />hearts and cleansing us of our<lb />wrong thinking. Only then will we<lb />be prepared for the great revival<lb />that is coming.<lb /><lb />ee<lb /><lb />; Culinary Cusine<lb /><lb />Sometimes the place we least.<lb /><lb />likely think of as an eating<lb /><lb />establishment is right under -<lb /><lb />our noses. It is midnight in the<lb /> oparable; it is also midnight in our<lb />world, and the darkness is so deep<lb />that we can hardly see which way<lb />to turn.<lb />It is midnight within the social<lb />order. On the international<lb />horizon nations are engaged in a<lb /> ocolossal and bitter contest for<lb /> osupremacy. Two world wars have<lb /> obeen fought within a generation,<lb />and the clouds of another war are<lb />_ dangerously low. Man now has<lb />atomic and nuclear weapons that<lb />could within seconds completely<lb />destroy the major cities of the<lb />world. Yet the arms race<lb />continues and nuclear tests still<lb />explode in the atmosphere, with<lb />the grim prospect that the very air<lb />we breathe will be poisoned by<lb />radioactive fallout. Shaw<lb />University has long been commit-<lb />ted to training North Carolina's<lb />African-American Baptist minis-<lb />ters. It all began 135 years ago<lb />when in a downtown hotel, Bible<lb />classes were taught. The first and<lb />only medical school in the nation<lb />for blacks was established at<lb />Shaw University and existed from<lb /><lb />RGRIRGRG<lb /><lb />wa] the late 1800s to the ny<lb />- 1900s-the old Leonard Medical<lb /><lb />School, as it is referred to now. It<lb />once trained medical doctors for<lb />the profession. My late father<lb />attended Leonard for two years<lb />before deciding to pursue another<lb />profession. Shaw University is<lb />also my boast---having spent two<lb /><lb /> summers enrolled in the school of<lb /><lb />education to renew. a teaching<lb />contract before expiration. So<lb />you see, | will always be inter-<lb />ested in reading or hearing about<lb />Shaw's progress and expansion.<lb />Some of my roots are there.<lb /><lb />The religious approach at Shaw<lb />University Divinity School today<lb />is much more sophisticated, in<lb />preparation for a high-tech<lb />twenty-first century church.<lb />Classes in religion will be offered<lb />for the Internet and in the near<lb />future, a doctorate in ministry will<lb /><lb />be offered---a doctorate which<lb /><lb />will be earned through study of all<lb /><lb />aspects of ministry and its accom- .<lb /><lb />panying counterparts (courses)<lb />and not the "doctorate" conferred<lb />through years of service which is<lb />SO common irrespective of formal<lb />training or in some cases where<lb />"degrees" are bought through the<lb />mail for a fee with no course<lb />required. The<lb />day of the circuit rider is long<lb />past.<lb /><lb />Shaw's Divinity School is now<lb /><lb />Catering to students who want a<lb /><lb />divinity degree but not the title of<lb />a pastor. Some want to go on to<lb />law school and work in the area<lb />of church law, Christian education<lb />or as chaplains. Plans are also to<lb />offer degrees in Christian educa-<lb />tion and theological studies for<lb />those who want to work on social<lb />issues or in faith-based commu-<lb />nity programming.<lb /><lb />We?<lb /><lb />INI-VANS<lb /><lb />Today, there. are ten accredited<lb /><lb />divinity schools with a primarily<lb /><lb />African-American student body.<lb />Besides Shaw, they include Hood<lb />Theological Seminary in<lb />Salisbury. For many pastors who<lb />will spend their careers in black<lb />churches, attending a black. divin-<lb />ity school is important. <lb />C1 ince early summer, Greenville Utilities has seen a steady increase in our market cost of natural gas. Now thatthe heating season is upon us, our<lb /><lb />Me antital ges customers are beginning to feel the full impact of these increases. Unfortunately, the current cold temperatures and predictions of a colder-<lb /><lb />th A than-normal winter ahead indicate that immediate relief is nowhere in sight.<lb /><lb />This situation is not unique to Pitt County; the rising cost of all heating fuels is a nationwide problem. Low inventories at a time of high demand have<lb /><lb />created the higher prices. Although we expect it to be a temporary<lb />be impacted throughout this heating season.<lb /><lb />Q.<lb />A.<lb /><lb />ad<lb /><lb />What are the reasons for the ingrease in natural gas<lb />costs? . |<lb /><lb />The increases are due primarily to high demand, low supply, a lag in<lb />production and the rising cost of other fuel commodities.<lb /><lb />High Demand - The economy is booming and Americans are consuming .<lb />about 1.5 billion cubic feet more natural gas a day than last year. This new<lb />demand is mostly the result of an increase in gas-fired electrical generation.<lb />In comparison with other energy sources, natural gas is cost-effective and<lb />environmentally friendly. As a result, more new power plants are using<lb />natural gas to generate electricity, thus demand for natural gas has in-<lb />creased.<lb /><lb />Low Supply - At the same time there is high demand for natural gas,<lb />inventories are low. While there is an abundant supply of natural gas in the<lb />U.S., it must be drilled by producers and stored underground. Currently,<lb />underground storage levels are the lowest they have been in the past five<lb />years. Natural gas inventories are low for several reasons, primarily the<lb />increased use of natural gas in electrical generation and a lag in production.<lb /><lb />The increased use of natural gas for electrical generation has changed the<lb />seasonal pattern of demand. Traditionally there is high demand for natural<lb />gas during the winter heating season, then a drop off during the summer<lb />cooling season. Summer has usually been a time to produce and store<lb />natural gas to build up inventories for winter. But this year we saw an<lb />unusually high demand in the summer because people were running their air<lb />conditioners on electricity fueled by natural gas. As a result, natural gas<lb />was being consumed instead of stored during the summer. And, because of<lb />this change in summer usage, natural gas reserves ran low and market<lb />prices rose accordingly.<lb /><lb />Lag in Production - Complicating the supply-and-demand picture is the<lb />fact that (prior to this year) natural gas prices have been low and tempera-<lb />tures have been milder than normal for the last three winters. Lower prices<lb />meant producers weren Tt willing to provide the investment capital to search<lb />for new gas. In fact, many producers halted drilling and laid off thousands<lb />of workers. All that has changed now, and the number of rigs drilling for<lb />natural gas has more than doubled from last spring. While domestic gas<lb />production has increased, it will take between 12-18 months for the natural<lb />gas to make it to the market place. The impact of new production will not<lb />be seen, in terms of price reduction, until after this winter season at the<lb />earliest.<lb /><lb />Other Fuel Commodities - The cost of other fuel commodities such as<lb />crude oil, gasoline, propane and home heating oil is much higher than<lb />normal. When those fuel prices go up, natural gas prices follow the trend<lb />and increase. _<lb /><lb />Where does Greenville Utilities get its supply of natural<lb />gas and is it adequate for this winter?<lb /><lb />We fully expect to have an adequate supply of natural gas this winter. GUC<lb />has a firm supply contract with North Carolina Natural Gas (NCNG) which<lb />will allow us to meet our customers T needs. We also purchase gas (when<lb />available) on the spot market. In addition, GUC has a liquefied natural gas<lb />storage facility that is used during peak demand and as a secondary supply<lb />to our firm supplies contract.<lb /><lb />With natural gas prices increasing, how does the cost of<lb />natural gas compare with the cost of electricity and other<lb />fuels?<lb /><lb />Because of current market conditions our residential gas customers are<lb />now paying an average $1.33 per hundred cubic feet (Ccf). Last year at<lb />this time they were paying an average of 89 cents for the same amount of<lb />gas (49% less). .<lb /><lb />Here is a comparison of home heating costs with natural gas and other fuels<lb /><lb />in Our service area today:<lb /><lb />(Per million BTUs)<lb />* Natural Gas - $15.96 (based on 80% efficiency at $1.33/Ccf)<lb /><lb />* Propane - $27.73 (based on 80% efficiency at $2.12/gal.)<lb />* Electric Resistance Heat (furnace, baseboard) -$24.32<lb />(based on 8.3 cents/kWh) |<lb /><lb />* o Electric Heat Pump - $9.85<lb /><lb />Here is some background information and answers to the most-often-asked questions:<lb /><lb />Q.<lb />A.<lb /><lb />ad<lb /><lb />P<lb /><lb />problem that should be resolved by increased production, our natural gas customers will<lb /><lb />How much could my bill be impacted by the increase in<lb />natural gas costs?<lb /><lb />It all depends on the market price of gas and the weather. High market<lb />prices and colder temperatures will result in substantially higher utility<lb />bills. As temperatures dip, natural gas usage for heating will go up and<lb />bills will be higher. A mild winter could minimize the impact of high<lb />market prices, but predictions are that we Tre in for a colder-than-normal<lb />winter.<lb /><lb />Based on current market predictions, we are expecting our residential<lb />natural gas rates to increase between 40-60 % above last year Ts rates for<lb />the heating season. This percentage could move up or down depending<lb />upon the open market. How much natural gas customers use will depend<lb />on the weather and how diligent they are in making their homes and<lb />lifestyles more energy efficient.<lb /><lb />Our natural gas customers are billed in units of Ccf or hundred cubic feet<lb />(equal tol therm). For a comparison, if your monthly gas costs were $75<lb />last January, and your usage remained the same, your bill would be $112<lb />this January (49% higher). However, the price of natural gas is fluctuating<lb />wildly because market forces are attempting to balance supply and de-<lb />mand. That percentage can change daily!<lb /><lb />Does Greenville Utilities benefit from the higher cost of<lb />natural gas?<lb /><lb />No. We change our pricing only as much as needed to recover the in-<lb />creased cost from our supplier, and no more.<lb /><lb />What has Greenville Utilities done to inform and help its<lb />customers about the increased costs of natural gas?<lb /><lb />We have attempted to give our customers ample warning beginning in late<lb />August with a bill stuffer, advertisements, news releases to the local media<lb />and information on our website (www.guc.com).<lb /><lb />We have made our local leaders aware of the change in the marketplace<lb />and the effect it will have on low-income families in our area.<lb /><lb />Through our American Public Gas Association, we have also asked that<lb />Congress give consideration to providing additional funds for the Low-<lb />income Home Energy Assistance Program and any other assistance that<lb />may be available. _<lb /><lb />What can customers do to reduce the impact of higher<lb />heating bills this winter?<lb /><lb />Budget and plan now for higher heating costs to continue at least through<lb />March 2001.<lb /><lb />A heating system uses 60% of a home Ts energy. Keep furnace filters clean,<lb />and make sure your heating system is operating efficiently.<lb /><lb />Set the thermostat at 68 degrees (or lower) during the winter months. For<lb />every degree below 68, you save around 5% per degree. If you Tre gone<lb />for several hours or more, set the thermostat at 55 degrees, or even cut it<lb />off (unless pipes are in danger of freezing). ,<lb /><lb />Make sure your home is well insulated.<lb />Weather strip and caulk windows and doors to seal small cracks.<lb /><lb />Insulate your gas water heater and set the temperature as reasonably low<lb />as possible. We recommend setting water heaters at 120 degrees.<lb /><lb />Call GUC T Energy Services Office at 551-1525 for specific tips on<lb /><lb />lowering your energy bill.<lb /><lb /></p>
