<lb />by: Betty Pleasant<lb /><lb />Most Americans haven Tt given a<lb />thought to the electoral college<lb />since they were required to pro-<lb />vide the correct answer about it<lb />on a high school civics test. But<lb />as we are facing a 1888 redux ---<lb />when Benjamin Harrison lost the<lb />popular vote, but won the elec-<lb />toral vote and became US presi-<lb />dent anyway----many people are<lb />scratching their heads, trying to<lb />recollect that forgotten civics<lb />lesson.<lb /><lb />Having been hit in the face last<lb />Tuesday with the realization that<lb />a presidential candidate does not<lb />have to amass the most votes to<lb />win the White House, the Sentinel<lb />has received many requests from<lb />readers to explain this unseemly<lb />phenomenon.<lb /><lb />Here goes:<lb />The electoral college is a group of<lb />electors chosen within each state<lb />to elect the president and vice<lb />president of the United States.<lb />Each state has as many<lb />presidential electors as it has<lb />representatives in both houses of<lb />Congress. Altogether, there are<lb />538 electors or members of the<lb />electoral college. California has<lb />the most electors. 54, because we<lb />have 54 members in Congress<lb />who represent the most people in<lb /><lb />What You See Is What You Get, What You R<lb /><lb />any state. (Another reason why<lb />an accurate Census count. is<lb />important, but we digress.)<lb /><lb />Others states with a lot of<lb />electors include New York with<lb />33, Texas with 32, in infamous<lb />Florida 25, Pennsylvania with 23,<lb />and Ohio with 21. Washington<lb />DC , as well as six states have the<lb />least number of electors, three<lb />each.<lb /><lb />As we all know by now, it takes<lb />270 electoral votes to win the<lb />presidency. The electors in each<lb />State are chosen by the political<lb />parties in the state. Some of the<lb />are elected officials and some<lb />loyal party activists. Basically,<lb />the part apparatus selects electors<lb />for whatever reason it wants, but<lb />loyalty to the party is the highest<lb />prerequisite.<lb /><lb />All the states, except Maine and<lb />Nebraska, hold a winner-take- all<lb />popular vote for electors: the<lb />candidate who wins the most<lb />popular votes in the state, wins<lb />that state Ts complete slate of<lb />electors.<lb /><lb />For example, Vice President Al<lb />Gore beat Gov. George W. Bush<lb />by more than 1,200,000 popular<lb />votes in California and won all 54<lb />of this state Ts electoral votes.<lb /><lb />On the other hand, Bush may<lb />defeat Gore by two popular votes<lb />in Florida and he would collect all<lb /><lb />25 of that state Ts electoral votes.<lb /><lb />With our winner-take-all system,<lb />elected presidents receive a<lb />greater percentage of the electoral<lb />vote than of the popular vote.<lb />Two presidents, Rutherford B.<lb />Hayes in 1876 (another instance<lb />when the Florida vote was the<lb />point of contention) and Benjamin<lb />Harrison in 1888, won a majority<lb />of the electoral votes even though<lb />they received fewer popular votes<lb />than their principal opponents.<lb /><lb />In the very close election we<lb />had last week, it is highly prob-<lb />able that a popular-vote loser wilt<lb />again be elected president.<lb /><lb />As originally planned by the<lb /><lb /> framers of the Constitution in<lb /><lb />1787, it is the electors who<lb />actually choose the president, not<lb />the people. Why? Because they<lb />didn Tt trust the people.<lb /><lb />The framers preferred the<lb />electoral college arrangement<lb />over the direct popular election<lb />because, at a time when travel<lb />was difficult and there were no<lb />national party organizations, they<lb />feared that many regional candi-<lb />dates would divide the vote.<lb />Requiring a candidate to win a<lb />majority in the electoral college<lb />was a way of obtaining a national<lb />consensus, is the way some<lb />history books interpret the fram-<lb />ers T intentions.<lb /><lb />Inland Sea Food Expanding !<lb /><lb />Sown above are the owners and family of Inland Sea food, Thanksgiving Day they served free meals to<lb />everyone who stopped by. The Association<lb />was founded in 1968 from a<lb />need to address the concerns of<lb />both professionals in the field of<lb />psychology, and the needs of our<lb />people in the communities<lb />around the nation and around the<lb />world. Among those challenges<lb />We sought to promote and ad-<lb />vance a greater awareness of<lb />psychology from an African<lb />Perspective. In so doing we have<lb />attempted to influence and affect<lb />the socialization of African peo-<lb />ple, especially, and particularly<lb />our children and families. We<lb />have taken T this self-imposed<lb />mandate quite seriously.<lb />To actualize these goals the<lb />Association of Black<lb />Psychologists has been visible in<lb />Several areas, We present our<lb />Collective wisdom through vari-<lb />ous forms of media, conferences,<lb />forums, and through our own<lb />Publications, we develop pro-<lb />day a training snocels to<lb />directly affect change; and we<lb />Continually iaetew our own<lb />foundation and sources of<lb /><lb />7 ge to ensure that we stay<lb /><lb />CN<lb /><lb />grounded within the systems that<lb />have informed the thinking and<lb />well-being of our people for<lb />centuries. We believe that<lb />African psychologists must be at<lb />every table where discussions<lb />take place~-and decisions are<lb />made in the planning for, and<lb />implementation of programs and<lb />policies that affect African peo-<lb />ple. In fact, we believe that since<lb />everything (media, schooling,<lb />public policy, advertisement, en-<lb />tertainment, work) affects the<lb />psychological well-being of our<lb />people, an African psychologist<lb />should be at every table, every<lb />board meeting, every public fo-<lb />rum and every session of con-<lb />gress. Not only within this<lb />hemisphere, but throughout the<lb />Diaspora, wherever people of<lb />African ancestry find ourselves<lb />and our future in deliberation,<lb />Some of the issues that the<lb />Association of Black<lb />Psychologists has addressed are<lb />consistent with the focus of the<lb />National Black Family<lb />Empowerment Agenda. On our<lb />board of directors, within our<lb />regions and local chapters, and<lb />within the general Assembly of<lb />the Association, in particular,<lb />much of the work on these issues<lb />is transformed to position<lb />rs, protests, projects, or<lb /><lb />nate The ABP remains at the<lb /><lb />a<lb /><lb />forefront in challenging White<lb />supremacy (racism) and all op-<lb />pressive practices within this<lb />country and around the globe.<lb />In the area of Education the ABP<lb />challenged the use of IQ<lb />(Intelligence Quotient) testing as<lb />a means to place our children in<lb />special education classes or<lb />lower learning tracts in schools.<lb />We are focused on the restora-<lb />tion and preservation of the<lb />Black family as the primary and<lb />critical tool in the healthy so-<lb />cialization of Black children. We<lb />believe that Black culture social-<lb />ized by the Black family is the<lb />key to moving beyond survival<lb />to full development for our<lb />people,<lb /><lb />We have advanced rites of pas-<lb />Sage programs for youth and<lb />adults because we know the<lb />importance of socializing our<lb />families to our own traditions. In<lb />80 doing we recognize that our<lb />adults may not be prepared to<lb />raise our children with the val-<lb />ues deemed essential to our<lb />overall development as a result<lb />of alien socialization influences,<lb />In the arena of Law and Justice<lb />ABP became involved on. the<lb />National level with the Federal<lb />Violence Initiative,<lb /><lb />Grand Opening !<lb /><lb />Shown above at the Grand opening of R & B Diner is owners ; M<lb /><lb />»<lb /><lb />rt. and Mrs. Allen Robertson, Mr. &<lb /><lb />Mrs. Jones Beatly and Mrs. Beverly Gaskin (manager). Such an explo-<lb />sive suggestion simply cannot be<lb />tossed off without explanation or<lb />documentation. Also, Malcolmson<lb />dwells on a somber late-in-life novel<lb />by Mark Twain but inexplicably<lb />ignores oHuckleberry Finn ,<lb />Twain Ts greatest work, still contro-<lb />versial for its take on race and its<lb />use of the o n word.<lb /><lb />Even in retrospect, Malcolmson<lb />gloomily sees pre-Civil War Amer-<lb />ica, even the great Lincoln, as adrift<lb />in a debilitating swamp of racial<lb />chauvinism with few seeds of<lb /><lb />redemption visible. However, the<lb />Civil War at least purged the nation<lb />_ of slavery at a cost of 600,000 black<lb />and white lives, precisely what Lin-<lb />coln called oa new birth of free-<lb /><lb />dom. At Gettysburg, Lincoln |<lb /><lb />_ " sae<lb /><lb />The outcome<lb />| of the Florida<lb />- recount has<lb /> the whole<lb />world (liter-<lb /><lb />next president of the United States.<lb />Partisan politics threaten to try to<lb />(may have already) declare(d) a<lb /><lb />winner, is ti ing tee tabooeria<lb />Es spends ae<lb /><lb />- vasa erdn prada<lb /><lb />_ingly spoke her thoughts aloud, a i<lb />~ Joycean monologue in-which she ff<lb />_ dished about every farmer Ts wife<lb /><lb /> o ~ and tavern keeper in the Wisconsin o4<lb /><lb />lisadideg who s1lt be the<lb /><lb />THE AMERICAN<lb />MISA DVENT URF OF RAC E<lb /><lb /> oScort L. The<lb />father of Americar: democracy,<lb />Thomas Jefferson, believed that<lb />Indians and whites could form a sin-<lb />gle intermarrying population once<lb />the Indians abandoned their savage .<lb />ways.<lb /><lb />He entertained no such sentiments<lb />regarding African Americans. Jef-<lb />ferson could not bring himself to<lb />free his slaves during his lifetime,<lb />even Sally Hemings, his first wife Ts<lb />half-sister who now few doubt was<lb />Jefferson Ts mistress.<lb /><lb />First families of Virginia proudly<lb />claimed descent from Pocahontas T<lb />son Thomas by her marriage to Eng-<lb />lish settler John Rolfe. However, the<lb />demands by African Americans for,<lb />recognition as descendants of Jef-<lb />ferson and Hemings still had the<lb />power to create uproar even after<lb />DNA evidence convinced many that<lb />the issue of the famous romance had<lb />been put to rest. Malcomson, curi-<lb />ously, mentions the Pocahontas mar-<lb />riage to Rolfe only in passing, and<lb /><lb />not her mixed race son. More curi-<lb /><lb />ously, he gives no attention what-<lb />ever to the Hemings saga.<lb /><lb />For much of our history these three<lb />founding American races had diffi-<lb />culty seeing common humanity in<lb />each other Ts faces. At other times<lb />they found themselves partners in<lb />love and war. Together they fur-<lb />nished most of the poignancy of the<lb />nation Ts first century. Children had been so<lb />well schooled they generally dared not do any-<lb />thing that might be seen as wrong in the eyes of<lb /><lb />m society and most certainly in the eyes of God.<lb /><lb />. Itis interesting to note that within.a block of<lb />most of our churches, there were confectionery<lb />Stores, where candies, sodas and chewing gum<lb />were sold. Theif biggest day of the week would<lb />_be Sunday, between the hours of about 10:30<lb /><lb />a.m. and 11:15 a.m. This was the time that<lb />Sunday school was over. The children would<lb />spend their nickels and dimes in between ser-<lb />vices. :<lb /><lb />We acrid awaken to the smells of frying<lb />chicken and hot biscuits. The radio would be on<lb />whatever radio station that carried oWings Over<lb />Jordan and/or oPet Milk Sunday Morning. <lb />The Pet Milk show, hosted by one of the greatest<lb />announcers in the world, Sid McCoy, was the<lb />first black syndicated radio show in the country.<lb /><lb />_ Then we would go off to Sunday school,<lb /><lb />Let us not be misled here. Sunday school was<lb />not the total answer. It did however reinforce the<lb />subliminal teachings we had gotten throughout<lb />the week.<lb /><lb />The key here is not Sunday school or church<lb />per se. It is the involvement of the parents and<lb />the determination of the parents that their child<lb />(ren) would not wind up behind bars or running<lb />afoul of the law.<lb /><lb />Without question, some of the young men<lb />and occasionally, women, did have problems<lb />but in no way did they. approach the magnitude<lb />we see now. If your response is that there are so<lb />Many more people, then approach it from a<lb />percentage perspective. The comparison does<lb />not even come close.<lb /><lb />What happened? Again the answer is simple.<lb />In an attempt to keep up with the Joneses, we<lb />have all too often abdicated our responsibility to<lb />give our children the training they needed in<lb />order to preserve the sanctity of life.<lb /><lb />Several years ago, in an interview for one of<lb />the TV stations, a gang member said life meant<lb /><lb />nothing to him because he did not expect to live<lb /><lb />to see 25 years. Somebody failed him.<lb />More than 10 years ago, this reporter, after<lb /><lb />discussing the matter with two different psy-<lb /><lb />chiatrists commented that prospective gang<lb />members sought out other gang members be-<lb />cause this was the only familial structure that<lb /><lb />was available to them. Nobody listened and<lb /><lb />today, we see the results.<lb /><lb />Part of the bottom line is that all may not be<lb />lost. We can save this new generation. It will not<lb />be an easy task and it clearly will have defined<lb />the goals of the parents. Instead of buying the<lb />biggest most expensive car in the show room,<lb />they have to step down a notch or two and<lb />recognize the time spent on the second job to pay<lb />for the car could and should be spent on rearing<lb />their children and teaching them life is sacred.<lb /><lb />It might also be.helpful to set the VCR to<lb />record the football game and,get up.on Sunday<lb />morning and take the children to Sunday school<lb />and church. They need to know that since they<lb />cannot create life, they have no right to arbi-<lb />trarily take it.<lb /><lb />We need to understand that our children are<lb />products of their environment and when we do<lb />not create the proper environment, our children<lb />become like the legendary Topsy from Harriet<lb />Beecher Stowe Ts book, Uncle Tom Ts Cabin, who<lb />just ogrow<lb /><lb />The responsibility for our children does not<lb />fall on the shoulders of the police department<lb />probation department and social services. It falls<lb />on évery parent and by and large, we have truly<lb />dropped the ball.<lb /><lb />Each time there is a parent-teacher night or<lb />conference, the rooms should be filled to capac-<lb />ity. We need to stop taking adversarial roles<lb />against the teachers. Despite our protests to the<lb />contrary, our children will, have and will con-<lb />tinue to lie when it fits their purposes. It is<lb />almost a joke when we see mothers angry with<lb />teachers or authorities, and declaring, oMy son<lb />wouldn't lie to me. <lb /><lb />Yes, Mother. They have and they will if it<lb />meets their needs.<lb /><lb />We can save the lives of our children in this<lb />new generation. It will, however, take determi-<lb />nation, devotion and sacrifice.<lb /><lb />Ask yourselves if the lives of your children |<lb />are worth the effort.<lb /><lb />victory, hook or crook. <lb /> ome years igo cn a et wee day i in<lb />& South Florida, alittle boy decided to go for<lb /><lb />aswim in the old swimming hole behind his<lb />house, In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran<lb /><lb />out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks,<lb />and shirt as he went. He flew into the water, not<lb />realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the<lb />lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore.<lb /><lb />His mother-in the house was looking out the<lb />window and saw the two as they got closer and<lb /><lb />closer. together. In utter fear, she ran toward the<lb />water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could.<lb />Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed<lb />and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was<lb />too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reach-<lb />ed him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her<lb />little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched<lb />his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war be-<lb />tween the two. The alligator was much stronger<lb />than the mother, but the mother was much too<lb />passionate to let go.<lb /><lb />A farmer happened to drive by, heard her<lb />screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot<lb />the alligator. Remarkably, after weeks and weeks<lb />in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs<lb />were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the<lb />animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches<lb />where his mother Ts fingernails dug into his flesh in<lb />her effort to hang on to the son she loved.<lb /><lb />The newspaper reporter who interviewed the<lb />boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him<lb /><lb />his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, ,<lb /><lb />with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, oBut<lb />look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms,<lb />too. I have them because my mom wouldn Tt let<lb />go. <lb /><lb />You and I can identify with that little boy. We<lb /><lb />: so dramatic, but rather, the scars of a<lb /><lb />you. Don Tt forget to<lb />pray for your home church, your pastors & their<lb />families, the leadership in the church, our mission-<lb />aries, and our world leaders.<lb /><lb /> oFather, I ask you to bless these important<lb />people, right now. I am asking You to minister to<lb />their spirit at this very moment. Where there i is<lb />pain, give them Your peace and mercy. Where<lb />there is self-doubting, release a renewed confi-<lb />dence in Your ability to work through them.<lb />Where there is tiredness, or exhaustion, I ask You<lb />to give them understanding, patience, and strength<lb />as they learn submission to Your leading. Where<lb />there is spiritual stagnation, I ask You to renew<lb />them by revealing Your nearness, and by drawing<lb />them into greater intimacy with You. Where there<lb />is fear, reveal Your love, and release to them to<lb />Your courage. Where there is a sin blocking them,<lb />reveal it, and break its hold over their life. Bless<lb />their finances, give them greater vision, and raise<lb />up leaders, and friends to support, and encourage<lb />them. Give each of them discernment to recognize<lb />the evil forces around them, and reveal to them the<lb />power they have in You to defeat it. I ask You to<lb />do these things in Jesus T name, amen. <lb /><lb />Are we a opart of the problem,<lb />or part of the solution? <lb /><lb />s a firm supporter of the formation of a<lb /><lb />Pitt County human relations organization,<lb /><lb />allow me to express my sorrow and<lb />disdain for the reckless and totally uncalled for<lb />editorial attack by Keith W. Cooper against County<lb />Commissioner David Hammond. As an occasional<lb />writer in this forum, I try to avoid using words such<lb />as ostupid or olamebrain. However, Mr. Cooper Ts<lb />comments seen in The Daily Reflector on Novem-<lb />ber 26" has earned him these titles. Commissioner<lb />Hammond conducted himself appropriately<lb />concerning the suggestion to start a human relations<lb />effort for the County. He helped to ensure that the<lb />idea was given full consideration. The decision to<lb />avoid having the County take responsibility for<lb />finding and forming the project is wise and<lb />practical.<lb /><lb />I am reminded of some of Keith Cooper T s<lb />earlier comments wherein he labeled Michael<lb />Dixon an oUncle Tom for actions that he took<lb />as a member of the Board of Education. Thus,<lb />Cooper Ts message is very clear: all black leaders<lb />who do not see things his way are automatically<lb /> oenemies of progressive change who ofan the<lb />flames of bigotry. Mr. Cooper may mean well,<lb />but he is obviously too blind to see that his<lb /><lb />LETTER TO THE EDITOR<lb /><lb />behavior is shameful, divisive and dangerous. The<lb />danger lies in the possibility that some people may<lb /><lb />| be misled by the half-truths and references to<lb /><lb />heroic martyrs that he loves to include in his<lb />misguided and worn-out rhetoric.<lb /><lb />I have not read that anyone is prohibited from<lb />reaching out to help those who need it. If Keith<lb />Cooper or his omany supporters are sincere about<lb />wanting to do good things, he would stop whining<lb />on the editorial pages about what others should<lb />do and start organizing toward doing whatever<lb />needs to be done. Better yet, he might review the<lb />history of the Greenville Human Relations Depart-<lb />ment. It was not started through government<lb />involvement but by a few people who took itupon<lb />themselves to do so.<lb /><lb />It is amazing that while thinking of famous<lb />names to include in his ignorant statements, Mr.<lb />Cooper would overlook Frederick Douglas who<lb />said that each of us was ether a opart of the<lb />problem or part of the solution. You, Mr. Cooper,<lb />are part of the problem. &<lb /><lb />Michael W. He was a<lb />state representative from Atlanta<lb />for eleven years, a city<lb />councilman for five, and a<lb />DeKalb County commissioner<lb />for three. And he never ceased<lb />his oactivism . For the last<lb />thirty years he organized a Feed<lb />The Hungry and Homeless<lb />Thanksgiving Day dinner in<lb />Atlanta that fed thousands, and<lb />he was continually on the front<lb />lines of demonstrations for a<lb />variety of causes.<lb /><lb />But he also had numerous<lb />scrapes with the law over traffic<lb />violations, including several<lb />drunk-driving charges, and other<lb />offenses, and he spent several<lb />short stays in jail. Perhaps these<lb />tarnished his effectiveness over<lb />the last several years. American . or<lb /><lb />he paid a tremendous price for it.<lb /><lb />Robeson was an activist on be- _<lb />half of oppressed peoples fornearly<lb />50 years. He was born in New Jer-<lb /><lb />: sey in 1898, the son.of a runaway "<lb /><lb />slave. Born in the shadow of sla-<lb />very, he was always an uncompro-<lb /><lb />mising advocate for full equality .<lb /><lb />for African Americans and it gave<lb /><lb />him the will to prove that all of the<lb /><lb />, Stereotypical images assigned to<lb />black people were false.<lb /><lb />Tt was well-known at the time<lb />. that while oNegroes were good at<lb /><lb />- menial labor, dancing, singing and<lb />athletics, they were inferior in aca-<lb />demic pursuits, they could not mas-<lb />terthe process of analytical thought,<lb />nor did they have the brain power to<lb />master the complexities of foreign<lb />language. Robeson destroyed all of<lb />those stereotypes.<lb /><lb />Robeson was a scholar. In 1915,<lb />Paul Robeson won a four-year aca-<lb />demic scholarship to Rutgers Uni-<lb />versity. He was a star athlete, atwo-<lb />time All-American at football and,<lb />in spite of violence and racism from<lb />teammates, he won 15 varsity let-<lb />ters in baseball, basketball and track.<lb />As a scholar, he received the Phi<lb />Beta Kappa key in his junior year,<lb />belonged to the Cap & Skull Honor<lb />Society. He graduated from Rutgers<lb />as the valedictorian of his class. He<lb />went on to become a professional<lb />football player while he worked his<lb />way to. a.law degree at Columbia<lb />Law School.<lb /><lb />At Columbia:(1919- 1923),<lb />Robeson met and married Eslanda<lb />Cordoza Goode, who was to be-<lb />come the first black woman to head<lb />a pathology laboratory. He took a<lb />job with a law firm, but left when a<lb />white secretary refused to take dic-<lb />tation from him. He left the practice<lb />of law to use his artistic talents in<lb />theater and music to promote Afri-<lb />can and African American history<lb />and culture.<lb /><lb />Robeson was a singer, a<lb />Shakespearean actor and a movie<lb />star. He made 11 films, including<lb /> oBody and Soul (1924), oJericho <lb />(1937), and oProud Valley (1939).<lb /><lb />Robeson lived and performed in<lb />Europe from the late 1920s until<lb /><lb />1939. In London, Robeson earned<lb />international acclaim for his lead<lb />role in oOthello, for which he won<lb />the Donaldson Award for Best Act-<lb />ing Performance (1944), and per-<lb />formed in Eugene O TNeill Ts oEm-<lb />peror Jones and oAll God's Chillun<lb />Got Wings. Heiis known for chang-<lb />ing the lines of the oShowboat song<lb /> oOld Man River from the meek<lb /><lb />"..._1 Tm tired of livin T and feared of<lb />dyin T... to a declaration of resis-<lb />tance, o... At the<lb />same time, his hatred of racial preju-<lb />dice and class difference led him to<lb />become active in a variety of politi-<lb />cal and social issues, including the<lb />British labor movement.<lb /><lb />Robeson became known as aciti-<lb />zen of the world, equally comfort-<lb />able with the people of Moscow,<lb />Nairobi and Harlem. His friends<lb />included future African leader Jomo<lb />Kenyatta, India Ts Nehru, historian<lb />Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois, and writers °<lb />James Joyce and_ Ernest<lb />Hemingway. In 1933, Robeson do-<lb />nated the proceeds of oAll God Ts<lb />Chillun to Jewish refugees fleeing |<lb />Hitler's Germany.<lb /><lb />During Hitler Ts reign in Ger-<lb />many, Robeson became one of the<lb />world Ts most famous anti-fascists.<lb />He spoke out against the fascist<lb />General Franco in Spain. While he disagreed with<lb />many principles of communism, he<lb />admired the Soviet Union's appar-<lb />ent lack of racial prejudice.<lb /><lb />Back in the United States in<lb />1939, he performed in the New York<lb />premiere of Earl Robinson's oBal-<lb />lad for Americans, a cantata cel-<lb />ebrating the multi-ethnic, multi:ra-<lb />cial face of America. It attracted<lb />one of the largest audience re-<lb />sponses of that time.<lb /><lb />During the 1940s, Robeson con-<lb />tinued to perform and tg speak out<lb />in support of labor and peace and |<lb />against racism. He spoke and per-<lb />formed at strike rallies, conferences<lb />and labor festivals worldwide. He<lb />supported the CIO (later part of the<lb />AFL-CIO) in its union organizing<lb />efforts. In addition, he protested<lb />the growing Cold War and worked<lb />tirelessly for friendship and respect<lb />between the U.S. and the USSR.<lb /><lb />In 1945, he headed an organiza-<lb />tion that challenged President<lb />Truman to support an anti-lynching<lb />law. In the late 40s, Robeson pub-<lb />licly questioned why African<lb />Americans should fight in the army<lb />of a government that tolerated rac-<lb /><lb />Expand Your Mind , Read |<lb /><lb />to his defamation.<lb /><lb />At a iime when America was<lb />engaged in a pervasive anti-Com-<lb />munist paranoia, he was accused by<lb />the House Un-American Activities<lb />Committee of being a Communist.<lb /><lb /> oT'mgoing tosing wherever the people<lb /><lb />_ want me to sing ....and I won't be<lb />frightened by crosses burning in<lb />. <lb /> " " " 1 the ocolored people .<lb /><lb />"What Is "Effective"<lb />Ministry ?<lb /><lb />_ A ministry is effective when "<lb /> lives are transformed such that<lb />Prone: are constantly enabled to ~<lb />more Christ-like. "<lb />Effective ministries foster sig-<lb /><lb />- nificant and continual changes in<lb />how people live. When your<lb />church is. able to consistently<lb />facilitate a personal change proc-<lb />ess among its people, then it is |<lb />operating in the realm of effec-<lb />tiveness.<lb /><lb />In our culture it is easy to get<lb />confused about what oeffective<lb />ministry looks like at the grass- .<lb />roots level. Some interviews<lb />with pastors confirm that there is -<lb />a tremendous degree of confu-<lb />sion about the practical meaning<lb />of effective ministry. Many<lb />Christians believe that the marks<lb />of an effective church are<lb />having a sanctuary filled every<lb /><lb />Sunday; raising a large amount<lb />of money; adding and construct-<lb />ing new ministry facilities; send-<lb />ing church choirs to sing in|<lb />churches, community events,<lb />and school campuses; broadcast-<lb />ing church worship services on<lb />the local radio and television;<lb />offering ministry programs and<lb />Christian education classes; hav-<lb />ing a high profile awareness in<lb />the community; adding 100 (or<lb />more) new members in a year.<lb /><lb />Contrary to popular opinion, |<lb /><lb />these scenarios do not necessar-<lb />ily reflect a church that is truly<lb />effective. The most important<lb />aspect of any ministry is-- the<lb />hearts of the people. There are<lb />many churches that offer a<lb />variety of ministry events and<lb />meetings but in which the par-<lb />ticipants are simply going<lb />through the motions. If such<lb />churches would reduce the num-<lb />-ber of programs, services,<lb /> events, and osocial gatherings <lb /> its effectiveness as a ministry<lb /> would facilitate a turnaround and<lb /> focus on the real purpose of a<lb />ministry.<lb /> the Lord examines a church, His<lb /> criteria have little to do with<lb />- attendance statistics, budgeting<lb />complexities or program<lb /> breadth. If His critique of the<lb /> Pharisees and other religious<lb /> leaders is any indication, His<lb />analysis will hinge on the depth<lb />of people Ts commitment to mak-<lb />ing their faith real and pure.<lb />Tiny congregations composed of<lb />people completely dedicated to<lb />being a blessing to God and<lb />others will probably make the<lb />grade; churches that have a hi<lb />profile and earn constant medi<lb />attention but exhibit limited<lb />spiritual growth and depth may<lb />be surprised (heartbroken) at<lb /> how they fare in His judgment,<lb /><lb />I Tm willing to bet that when .<lb /><lb />A A Poet's Childhood)<lb />BY: June Jordan<lb /><lb />| ae | before the black<lb />poet, June Jordan was born, she<lb /><lb />- writes, her mother was visited in<lb /><lb /> a dream by angels who told her<lb />the child would grow up to help<lb /><lb />But as<lb /> oSolider, <lb /><lb />Jordan Ts . memoir,<lb /><lb />makes clear an activist is not<lb /><lb />an<lb /><lb />HITACHI<lb />DVP305U<lb /><lb />DVD<lb />PLAYER<lb /><lb />it for superb<lb /><lb />Ive<lb /><lb />VCR<lb /><lb />ssi Ge Payback<lb /><lb />eS ] to<lb />SVMS tapes (at VHS sot <lb />© VCR Plus+<lb /><lb />° de A/V Jocks for easy camcorder<lb />game hookup<lb /><lb /> * Ado Edin time Pacing Adiusiment<lb />80 there's no more missed endings!<lb /><lb />¢ Spotializer Virtual Surround Sound using two speakers<lb />* Component Outpu picture quality<lb />. mine =y Coal es Opts for great connections |:<lb /><lb />| % 99": |<lb /><lb />99°"<lb /><lb />aug hinselé: to pay he di-<lb /><lb />- ected his considerable intelli-<lb />~ gence and rage into making his<lb /><lb />daughter fit for white. society.<lb />This included trips to Manhattan<lb />museums and Carnegie Hall,<lb /><lb />strictly enforced reading assign-<lb />ments and, ultimately enrollment<lb />of an unenthusiastic June into an<lb />elite all-white boarding school.<lb />Then there was a darker curricu-<lb />lum: drills in combat skills,<lb />literature lessons that descended<lb /><lb />into violence and unpredictable<lb /><lb />J 12 MONTHS INTEREST FREE!
