African<lb />Americans had virtually no law-<lb />making leverage before the mid<lb />1960's, those who founded the<lb />Congressional Black Caucus are<lb />now retired or retiring. The still<lb />expanded ranks of that group are<lb />increasingly dominated by young<lb />and newly elected Black represen-<lb />tatives , a contrast to their longer<lb />serving predecessors whose sen-<lb />ority accrued them many pivotal<lb />subcommittee and committee<lb />chairmanships.<lb /><lb />For a newer Black members<lb />of Congress, as well as newly<lb />elected leaders in other offices<lb />around the country, the challenges<lb />are twofold: to address the often<lb />technical policy issues of the new<lb />millennium with the right tools,<lb />ad to leverage their influence<lb />without the advantages of long<lb />incumbency. As we look to the 21st cen-<lb />and ni ior many Americans want<lb />to believe that problem has been<lb />solved, and that America has become a<lb />society where all children finally are<lb /> j by the content of their Ro face<lb />ters and not the color of their skins.<lb />Sadly, the facts show that ot .<lb />nificant progress, Black children still<lb /><lb />face far greater obstacles than White<lb />si ap 7 ah<lb /><lb />lives<lb />n live in en<lb /><lb />Politicians can turn rhetoric<lb />on our children into reality<lb /><lb />. Black children are dispropor-<lb />tionately likely to be victims of child<lb />abuse and neglect and of violent crime.<lb />And Black youths are over represented<lb />at every stage of the juvenile justice<lb />system, they are more likely to be<lb />stopped, questioned, arrested, jailed,<lb />sent to court, convicted, and given<lb />harsh sentences.<lb /><lb />The growing odigital divide ? is still a<lb /><lb />School segregation still exits.<lb /><lb />These disparities should remind all of<lb />us how much work we still need to.do<lb />to make our country one where no<lb />child is left behind and where children<lb />of all colors truly succeed and thrive<lb />equally. What can we do? We can begin<lb /><lb />_ by continuing to teach our children<lb />they can succeed despite any odds still<lb />stacked against them. A few<lb />days later California<lb />Congresswoman Maxine Waters<lb />wisely kept Lieberman's religion<lb />out of it but said:she had major<lb />problems with his centrist<lb />conservative political positions on<lb /><lb />affirmative action and school<lb /><lb />vouchers.<lb /><lb />After Waters spoke every top gun<lb />Black Democrat rushed to swear<lb />their allegiance to Gore-<lb />Lieberman and assured that<lb />Blacks have no problems with the<lb />Gore-Lieberman ticket. They<lb />backed up their contention that<lb />the Democrats have not aban-<lb />doned issues concerning people<lb /><lb />_of color by pointing out that<lb /><lb />Black delegates make up more<lb />than 20 percent of the Democratic<lb />Convention delegates and have a<lb />prominent place in managing the<lb />convention and in formulating the<lb />platform. Lieberman beat a fast<lb />path to meet with Waters and the<lb />Congressional Black Caucus to<lb />reassure them that he does not<lb />oppose affirmative action. In his<lb />convention acceptance speech he<lb />extended the olive branch even<lb />further by playing big on themes<lb />of diversity, support of civil rights<lb />and social programs.<lb /><lb />Despite Lieberman's conciliatory<lb /><lb />words and the happy assurances<lb />of Black leaders that Black voters<lb />will dutifully support Gore-<lb />Lieberman, the Alcorn and Waters<lb />flap poses two big problems, one<lb />legitimate. the other disturbing,<lb />for Gore-Lieberman.<lb /><lb />The first is Lieberman's politics.<lb /><lb />4 This is still a legitimate concern.<lb />| Lieberman's past ambiguous sup-<lb /><lb />ea,<lb /><lb /> oEARL OFARI Hl | HUTCHINSON om public edunation does absolutely<lb /><lb />nothing to inspire Black voters to<lb />make a headlong dash to the polls<lb /><lb />for Gore. Many Blacks wonder .<lb /><lb /> Out loud whether Lieberman will<lb />do anything to champion these<lb />issues.<lb /><lb />The other problem i is Lieberman's<lb /><lb />religion. This is inappropriate for<lb /><lb />anyone to raise as an issue, but<lb />the fact that some Blacks raise it<lb />at all is deeply troubling. It again<lb />stirs: latent and ugly anti-Jewish<lb />sentiments among some Blacks.<lb />On some Black radio talk shows<lb />callers railed against the NAACP<lb />for dumping Alcorn and defended<lb />his remarks.<lb />reminder that the breach that<lb /><lb />Nation of Islam's leader Louis.<lb /><lb />Farrakhan's contentious remarks<lb />about Jews caused between<lb />Blacks and Jews a few years ago<lb />still has not completely healed.<lb />Still, Gore must worry whether<lb />the silly, thoughtless remarks by a<lb />few Blacks about his religion and<lb />the concern about his stance on<lb />crucial social issues will damage<lb />Gore's chances against Bush. In a<lb />race to the wire with Bush, the<lb />Black vote will loom large. For<lb />the past four decades, no group<lb />has been more passionate and<lb />loyal in their support of the<lb />Democrats than Blacks. They<lb />have routinely given the<lb />Democrats 85 to 90 percent of<lb />their vote.<lb /><lb />According to a recent survey by<lb />the Joint Center For Political and<lb />Economic Studies, a Washington<lb />D.C. Black public policy think<lb />tank, in 1996 the Black vote was<lb />crucial to Clinton's , re-election<lb /><lb />victory in 10 Southern and<lb />Midwestern states. More than half<lb />of those who voted for Clinton in<lb />Louisiana, Georgia and a third of<lb />those who voted for him in<lb />Maryland were Black. These<lb />same states will be hotly con-<lb />tested by Gore and Bush. Also,<lb />the possibility that Green Party<lb />presidential candidate Ralph<lb /><lb />It was a_horrid-<lb /><lb />Nader can oieie iced<lb /><lb />the. vote, almost all of which<lb />would come from: disenchanted<lb />Democrats, make the Black vote<lb />even more indispensable to Gore.<lb />There are some early warning<lb />signs that Gore's core Black<lb />support may be softening. Recent<lb />polls show that more B acks are<lb />buying the Republican's diversity<lb />pitch and are willing to give them<lb /><lb />a closer look. The number of<lb /><lb />Black. voters who say they like<lb />what they hear and see in Bush<lb />has inched up not only in Texas<lb />and Florida, but also California.<lb />While 80 percent of Blacks still<lb />identify themselves as Democrats,<lb /><lb />among 18- to 25-year-olds that "<lb /><lb />number has plunged to 60 per-<lb />cent. This hardly means that<lb />younger Blacks will rush to Bush<lb />but it does pose the possibility,<lb />maybe danger, that the Democrats<lb />could lose some of their votes. If<lb />Bush can even slightly loosen the<lb />vise like grip Democrats have on<lb />Black votes, by winning as little<lb />as 5 to 7 percent more of their<lb />vote, this could doom Gore to<lb />defeat.<lb />Democrat strategists remind<lb />Black voters that Lieberman, dur-<lb />ing his college days, was a civil<lb />rights fighter. They further<lb />sweeten the pot by guaranteeing<lb />that Gore-Leiberman will con-<lb />tinue to support affirmative ac-<lb />tion, public education, social<lb />services, health care and labor<lb />protections, and Bush won't. They<lb />will rely on Democratic stalwarts<lb />Jesse Jackson Sr. and the legion<lb />of Black Democrats to again<lb />shepherd the Black voters safely<lb />into the Democratic camp. It's a<lb /><lb />good strategy, perhaps ultimately<lb />a winning strategy, but for now, at<lb />least, the sentiments of Blacks<lb />such as Alcorn and Waters cause<lb />jitters for Gore-Lieberman.<lb /><lb />Earl Ofari Hutchinson is the<lb />author of The Disappearance of<lb />Black Leadership.<lb /><lb />email: ehutchi344@aol com<lb /><lb /> oa ?<lb /><lb />Black Expo 2000 Nov. 4th & Sth .<lb /><lb />Toys for Childrn Affected by HIV; AIDs<lb /><lb />a te 2,<lb /><lb />THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, THE PASTOR, DR. But a threat alone<lb /><lb />- isn Tt enough "people need to have<lb /> a hero to vote for, too, in order to<lb />inspire them to turn out on Election<lb /><lb />_ Day. ?<lb /><lb />These results illuminate some of<lb />~ the issues concerning whether nega-<lb /> otive campaigning helps or hurts<lb /><lb />voter turnout, Krosnick said.<lb /><lb />The study is based on nation-<lb />wide survey data involving U.S.<lb />presidential elections during a 16-<lb />year period from 1972 to<lb /><lb />1988. The surveys were con-<lb />ducted by the National Election<lb />Study and included face-to-face in-<lb />terviews with more than 5,000<lb /><lb />Americans over the course of<lb />the four elections.<lb /><lb />Krosnick presented the results<lb />September | in Washington at the<lb /><lb />were not as likely to vote as were<lb />those who liked one and disliked<lb />another. ;<lb /><lb /> oThis goes agains the conven-<lb />tional wisdom in political science, T<lb />which says the important factor is.<lb />how much difference there is be- .<lb /><lb /> tween how much you like each can-<lb />didate, ? Krosnick said. oBut what.<lb /><lb />we found makes more sense. If you<lb />like both candidates, there is little<lb />motivation to vote "you T ll be happy<lb />no matter who wins. ?<lb /><lb />Conversely, voters would be less<lb />likely to vote if they dislike both<lb />candidates, because they won't be<lb />happy no matter who wins.<lb /><lb />Krosnick said the results put<lb />negative campaigning in a different<lb />light. Most candidates probably see<lb />negative campaigning as a way to<lb />persuade voters to vote for them.<lb />But what it really does is help en-<lb /><lb />sure that your supporters go to the<lb /><lb />polls.<lb /><lb /> oIf you Tre a candidate, there Ts<lb />only so much you can do to make<lb />people love you. But if you want to<lb />make sure people who love: you<lb />actually vote for you, it helps if you<lb />can make them hate your opponent, ?<lb /><lb />oo Teena anes solbdiion<lb /><lb />will be high if there are large groups:<lb />_of voters who love Gore and hate<lb /><lb />Bush, or who love Bush and hate<lb /><lb />Gore. But we don Tt want @situation<lb /><lb />where. everybody hates, or likes,<lb />both of them. ?<lb /><lb />The analysis of voter turnout was<lb />part of a larger study that offers a<lb /><lb />new way of thinking about voter<lb /><lb />decision-making "a way that is<lb />more consistent with psychological<lb />theory than with reigning theories<lb />in political science, Krosnick said.<lb />The larger study involved NES data<lb />from seven presidential elections<lb />between 1972 and 1996 and more<lb /><lb />than 25,000-respondents. ©<lb /><lb /> oWe found that voters form im-<lb />pressions about candidates the same<lb />way they do about everybody else:<lb /><lb /> neighbors, family members and co-<lb /><lb />workers, ? Krosnick said. oPolitical<lb />scientists have assumed that the<lb /><lb />process of making a voting deci- "<lb /><lb />sion is different than any other de-<lb />cision in a person Ts life. But we Tre<lb />finding there are a lot of similari-<lb />ties. This question may sound<lb />ridiculous, but how we answer<lb />this question is vital to how we<lb />approach different situations in<lb />our lives, and how effective we<lb />are when we are engaged in<lb />spiritual warfare. Without an<lb />understanding of what constitutes<lb />Spiritual attack, we have no way<lb />of knowing how to counter the<lb />attack, or even if there is anything<lb />to counter at all.<lb /><lb />A simple definition of<lb />Spiritual attack would be to say<lb />that spiritual attack is anything<lb />unexpected, unusual, our out of<lb />the ordinary, that causes us to<lb /><lb />And<lb />when we come under spiritual<lb />attack, we have at our disposal the<lb />full force of that victory. The<lb />shed blood of Jesus gives us the<lb />power to resist the devil. We are<lb />under its protection as long as we<lb />keep our focus on Christ and<lb />submit our will to His.<lb /><lb />___So what does this mean to us ?<lb />Simply this, Satan has NO power<lb />over us that we don Tt give to him.<lb />Once you became a born again<lb />child of God, you came under<lb />divine protection. Nothing Satan<lb />does can take you away from<lb />God. Jesus said, o My sheep hear<lb />My voice, and I know them, and<lb />they follow Me; And I give unto<lb />them eternal life; and they shall<lb />never perish, neither shall any<lb />man pluck them out of My hand, ?<lb />So, since Satan knows he can Tt<lb />defeat us, what is his plan? To<lb />make us ineffective. He does this<lb />by placing unwanted: thoughts in<lb />our minds, by placing doubt about<lb />our salvation and about God in<lb />our hearts, by placing desires for<lb />wordly things in us contrary to<lb />what we know is Godly, or by<lb />getting us into situations or cir-<lb />cumstances that he knows will try<lb /><lb />REAL E<lb />DKXE<lb /><lb />much at the club or bar.<lb /><lb />TO BUY, RENT OR SELL |<lb />ESTATE CALL<lb /><lb />"SINCE 1946"<lb /><lb />Call Us If You Need Someone To Collect Your Rent And<lb /><lb />|. One thing all Christians need<lb />to keep in mind, is that if you've<lb />| had a true soul-saving, born again "<lb />| experience, Satan cannot defeat<lb />| you outright. Jesus told Peter that<lb />|. the es of Hell. would: not.<lb />} Prevail against His church. - This<lb />| applies in our lives as well. The.<lb />'| Lord Jesus Christ defeated Satan<lb />. at Calvary on the Cross.<lb /><lb />might be mistake<lb />attack. =|. es Bais &<lb />DESIRES: Unfortunately,<lb /><lb />Satan doesn Tt always need<lb /><lb />intervene directly. When people<lb />follow the desires of their flesh,<lb />bad results usually follow. With<lb />these people, while the devil may<lb />have placed the desires there<lb />initially, the results are due to the<lb />decisions made by the people<lb />experiencing those desires. Once<lb />the desires are planted, Satan can<lb />just sit back and watch. For<lb />example, suppose someone has an<lb />inordinate desire for alcohol, and<lb />one night has a little (or a lot) too<lb />This.<lb />person gets into their car, and due<lb />to their intoxication, gets into an<lb />accident with another car. In this:<lb />instance, even though Satan may,<lb />or may not, have originally<lb />placed the desire for alcohol into<lb />this person Ts heart, the resulting<lb />accident was caused by this<lb />person indulging himself at the<lb />club. The other person(s) who<lb />was involved in the accident are<lb />not necessarily under spiritual<lb />attack. Although it is a possibility<lb />that Satan was using the drinker<lb />in order to attack the person(s) in T<lb />the other car, it is equally possible<lb />that this was nothing more than an<lb />accident caused by a lack of<lb />willpower on the part of the drunk<lb />driver. .<lb /><lb />To be continued...............<lb /><lb />TT<lb /><lb />Deliverance<lb />Bible & Book Store<lb />Plymouth, NC.<lb />For More Info:<lb />Call<lb />Chery Young<lb /><lb />Evelyn<lb /><lb />ee MAGE eget eee et:<lb /><lb />Featuring:<lb />Turrentine-Agee<lb />( oGod Did It ?)<lb />Detroit, Michigan<lb />New Vision<lb /><lb />New Bern, N.C.<lb />The A.&T.
