          <lb />BLACKS: ~ Whites are<lb />Rejecting Reconciliation ?<lb /><lb />JOHANNESBURG.......... In late<lb />August, a 14-year old Black girl<lb />went into a store in the South<lb />African. Northern Province town<lb />of Louis Trichardt. The white<lb />manager of the store accused her<lb />of shoplifting. Protesting but<lb />terrified, she was dragged to a<lb />back room in the store, stripped<lb />naked to the waist. painted white<lb />from the top of her head down to<lb />her belly button and thrown out<lb />into the street<lb /><lb />In the neighboring North-West<lb />Province, where the smaller<lb /><lb />Millard Filmore Bell<lb />1919<lb /><lb />-2000<lb /><lb />1%<lb /><lb />towns are also controlled by<lb />whites, a white farmer is facing<lb />charges of seriously assaulting his<lb /><lb />Black laborer<lb /><lb />In the Mpumalanga (meaning:<lb />Where the sun rises) Province a<lb />young Black farmworker strolled<lb />onto a white-owned farm. He<lb />was accosted by the farmer and<lb />his cohorts, accused of trespass-<lb />ing, stripped naked. painted silver<lb />and put up for display. The list of<lb />cases like these in South A frica is<lb />infinite . Life, especially on the<lb />farms, is reminiscent of the days<lb />of slavery.<lb /><lb />It is against this background that<lb />the South African government,<lb />under the leadership of President<lb />Thabo Mbeki, has launched an<lb />historic initiative to cut to the<lb />bone of racism and deal with it up<lb />front. It is an exercise unparal-<lb />leled in any part of the modern<lb />world.<lb /><lb />The aim of the South African<lb />Humane Rights Commission in<lb />hosting  oThe National<lb />Conference on Racism, ? August<lb />30 - Sept. 02, is to prevent what<lb />has happened in countries like<lb />Germany, Australia, Ireland and it<lb />need to noted, the mighty United<lb />States of America, say its sup-<lb />porters. Instead of dealing with<lb />racism after periods of harsh<lb />oppression of Black and indige-<lb />nous peoples, all of these coun-<lb /> tries stepped into a comfort zone<lb />of collective amnesia, observers<lb />argue.<lb /><lb />South Africa, now emerging out<lb />of a white racist society, is one of<lb />the freshest examples of confront-<lb />ing this problem and has chosen<lb /><lb />to deal with the issue now----<lb />rather than let it unjustly recede<lb />into obscurity, say supporters of<lb />Mr. Mbeki and his government.<lb />President Mbeki has been ac-<lb /><lb />- cused, in white-controlled news-<lb /><lb />papers, of being obsessed with<lb />racism. He has also been en-<lb />gaged in a running war-of-the<lb />words with the head of the newly<lb />constituted Demorcratic Alliance,<lb />a formation of two political<lb />parties, the notorious National<lb />Party of the apartheid past and the<lb />slightly liberal Democratic Party.<lb />The alliance is headed by Tony<lb />Leon, a conservative Jewish poli-<lb />tician, who has accused Mr.<lb />Mbeki of using the  orace-card<lb />whenever he gets into a tight spot.<lb />At the launch of the race summit,<lb />Mr. Mbeki pulled no punches. He<lb />lambasted whites collectively for<lb />not embracing the widely touted<lb />concept of reconciliation.<lb /><lb />Since, the historic 1994 first<lb />democratic elections, what has<lb />become evident is the hand of<lb />reconciliation has been extended<lb />only by the one side: the Black<lb />side. Whites remain smug in their<lb />control of industry, happily send<lb /><lb />oh<lb /><lb />Christop<lb /><lb />her Taylor Concedes to Randy Royal<lb /><lb />their children to priviledge private<lb />and predominantly white public<lb /><lb />schools and are still at the helm in _<lb /><lb />the main sporting organizations:in<lb />the country, Blacks say.<lb /> oOur process of national recon-<lb /><lb />ciliation has been somewhat of a<lb /><lb />charade. In this regard, only the<lb />victims of racism have responded<lb />to the- call to. forgive and to: let<lb />bygones __ be bygones.<lb /><lb />Those who have been the<lb />perpetrators and beneficiaries of<lb />oppression and exploitation  ohave<lb />acted merely to defend their<lb />interests, refusing to extend their<lb />own hand towards the victims, in<lb />a true spirit of reconciliation, *<lb />Mr. Mbeki intoned. South Africa<lb />has a population of 41 million<lb />people. Of these 89.1 % are<lb />Black while whites make up 10.9<lb />% of the population. One of<lb />the most significant mechanisms<lb />set in place to deal with the past,<lb /><lb />-ganother historic and unique South<lb /><lb />African initiative----the Truth and<lb />Reconciliation Commission<lb />(TRC)----has also been a glaring<lb />example of the lack of white<lb />goodwill in the  onew ? South<lb />Africa, Mr. Mbeki continued.<lb /> oThe response of our society to<lb />the request to make submissions<lb />to the TRC helped to reinforce the<lb />view that the beneficiaries of<lb />white minority rule were unwill-<lb />ing to contribute to the process of<lb />national reconciliation,  o he ar-<lb />gued.<lb /><lb />Mr. Mbeki. looking back at<lb />bloody anti-apartheid struggles,<lb />was also relentless in reminding<lb />whites that they did precious little<lb />to  obreak ranks ? and join those<lb /><lb />who strove to rid the country of a<lb /><lb />system so universally damned. -<lb /><lb />One cynic at the race summit<lb />made a remark, one uttered over<lb />and over again in South Africa,<lb />that while whites stand on the<lb />sideline and whine about the<lb />supposed mess South Africa is<lb />now in, it is impossible to find a<lb />single white person honest<lb />enough to admit they supported<lb />apartheid, or even voted for the<lb />previous white-only government.<lb />The meeting in Johannesburg is<lb />providing a platform for 21<lb />groups to later sit and discuss a<lb />variety of issues like defining<lb />racism, how it impacts South<lb />African society and what is to be<lb />done about it. .<lb />Again, while all of this happens,<lb />the predominantly white<lb />Democratic Alliance---whose<lb />leaders boycotted the groudbreak-<lb />ing event----watches from the<lb />wings.<lb /><lb />The chairperson of the Humane<lb />Rights Commission, Dr. Barney<lb />Pityana, told conference goers, it<lb />was up to all South Africans not<lb />to remain silent about  o the<lb /><lb />brutality of racism in our midst. ?<lb /><lb />The Republican candidate for the Pitt Col Board of Commissioners<lb /><lb />has' dropped out, At a press conference he<lb /><lb />at WOOW studios Mr.<lb /><lb />Taylor announced he will not run against Randy Royal in November's<lb />election. Simpson sued one of his<lb />former defense attorneys and a<lb />writer Tuesday for allegedly pub-<lb />lishing priviledge and confidential<lb />information in a tell-all book now<lb />being turned into a miniseries.<lb /><lb />In his lawsuit, Simpson contends<lb />Robert Kardashian and Lawrence<lb />Schiller,  o value the fame and<lb />fortune to be derived from pub-<lb />lishing information about a sensa-<lb />tional trial more than adhering to<lb />their ethical obligations and con-<lb />tractual agreements. ? He also claims<lb />Kardashain. who gained instant<lb />notoriety when he read a rambling<lb />statement from Simpson after his<lb />arrest,  o provided to Schiller all-of<lb />the surreptitious tape recordings<lb />and notes he had taken during his  T<lb />representation of Simpson.  o<lb /><lb />Schiller assisted Simpson in<lb />writing the book " | Want to Tell<lb />You ? and helped the defense team<lb />with information, including get<lb />ting  oclean audio copies of the<lb />tape recordings of interviews ?<lb />with former Los Angeles police<lb />officer Mark Fuhrman.<lb /><lb />Upon learning that Schiller and<lb />Kardashain were going to write a<lb /><lb />book, Simpson claims he senta T<lb /><lb />letter to all his attorneys, sayir<lb />they were not allowed to divulj<lb /><lb />any priviledge information unless.<lb />they: received written ¢<lb />tion from him °°<lb /><lb /></p>

We have scratched our<lb />Heads to find out how we could eliminate<lb />every last one of them. We stuffed ballot<lb />~ boxes. We shot them. We are not ashamed<lb />af it. ?<lb />-! America has, from time to time, found<lb />the strength and the courage to unshackle<lb />itself from the tyrannical forces of oppres-<lb />- sion and bigotry. One such victory oc-<lb />~ curred 35 years ago, when President Lyndon<lb />B. Johnson signed into law the Voting<lb />Rights Act of 1965, which he heralded as<lb /> oone of the most monumental laws in the<lb />éntire history of American freedom. ?<lb /><lb />The Voting Rights Act is the Magna<lb />Carta of American democracy. This legis-<lb />lation gave a voice to the millions of minor-<lb />ity Americans who were being institution-<lb />ally shut out of the electoral process. This<lb />buid, precedent-setting legislation estab-<lb />lished an enforceable network of laws<lb /><lb />from<lb />first.<lb /><lb />colonists landed on only. because that fundamental right<lb /><lb />and the poor. During almost every<lb /> in American history, arbitrary ob-<lb />stacles like land ownership, gender or race,<lb />Have been constructed in an attempt to deny.<lb /><lb />finally being protected by the full weight<lb /><lb />and authority of the federal government. In.<lb />the four years following the passage of the:<lb /><lb />Voting Rights Act, 800,000 previously dis-<lb /><lb />enfranchised African Americans had regis-<lb />tered to vote, and the number of black<lb /><lb />elected officials went from 1,469 in 1970to<lb />8,015 in 1993. In 1970, 10 blacks were<lb />elected to Congress; in 1994 there were 39.<lb />On the county and municipal  level, the<lb />numbers increased from 92 in 1970 to 4,816<lb />in 1993,<lb /><lb />By removing the manufactured restric-<lb />tions to democratic participation, the Vot-<lb />ing Rights Act gave African Americans a<lb />representational voice in local, state and<lb />federal legislative bodies. There is an enor-<lb />mous difference between being part of a<lb />community where your needs are unilater-<lb />ally and unapologetically ignored and hav-<lb />ing those needs effectively championed, by<lb />your duly elected member of Congress, on<lb />the floor of the House of Representatives:<lb />the difference is the Voting Rights Act.<lb /><lb />The 35th anniversary (Aug. 6) was es-<lb />pecially significant because it will be the<lb />last anniversary before the next round of<lb />redistricting "the first of the new millen-<lb />nium. ©<lb /><lb />Ina few months, the Census Bureau will<lb />begin releasing the most current popula-<lb />tion statistics on the American electorate,<lb />and in early 2001, the process of redrawing<lb /><lb />guaranteed right to vote, and result of the Voting Rights Act.  "<lb /><lb />pbax agian<lb /><lb />the Voting Rights Act fed tothe sean each nt<lb /><lb />many districts in which African Americans _<lb />were a majority of the electorate. Yet, [<lb />. there is still. an enormous amount of work -<lb /><lb />that must be done to protect gains made in | ©<lb /><lb />the ability of minority voters to elect the<lb /><lb />representatives of their choice, many of<lb />which came only during the 1990s. Despite<lb />setbacks in the Supreme Court, the Voting<lb />Rights Act continues to have a powerfully<lb />egalitarian impact by creating legitimate<lb />opportunities for minority voters to have<lb />equal access to the electoral process.<lb /><lb />Poor Americans, African Americans,<lb />Latinos and Asian Pacific Americans may<lb />not have been included in the founders T<lb />original interpretation of  odemocracy, ? but<lb />great strides have been made to correct that<lb />egregious oversight. Unfortunately, as our<lb />nation commemorates the enactment of the<lb />Voting Rights Act and heads into the next<lb />round of redistricting, one question lingers<lb />conspicuously on our collective national<lb />conscience: Is America finally ready to<lb />acknowledge the right of all Americans to<lb />having unilateral, unfettered access to the<lb />electoral process?<lb /><lb />(Rep. John Lewis represents Georgia's<lb />5th Congressional District, a minority op-<lb />portunity district which was created after<lb />the 1999 Census. Georgia stands to pick up<lb />a Congressional seatatter the 2600 Census<lb />count.)<lb /><lb />The Clinton-Gore Dilemma for<lb /><lb />By EARL OFARI HUTCHINSON, PhD<lb /><lb />y «6 The contrast in the<lb />reception that Re-<lb />publican presiden-<lb />tial candidate<lb />George W. Bush and<lb />President Clinton<lb />got when they spoke<lb />at the NAACP Ts an-<lb />nual convention in<lb />July couldn't have<lb />been more glaring. The delegates listened<lb />to Bush Ts worked-overplatitudes .ahqut<lb />racial tolerance with pohteskepticism. With<lb />Clinton they had a love fest and treated him<lb />as a conquering hero. Clinton reminded the<lb />delegates that he and Al Gore were joined<lb />at the hip for eight years and that if they<lb /><lb />adored him, they must adore Gore too, and °<lb /><lb />do everything they can to help elect him<lb />president. But his demand that blacks re-<lb />flexively back Gore underscores several<lb />enduring political dilemmas for black vot-<lb />ers. :<lb /><lb />. In every presidential election the past<lb />four decades, blacks have given the Demo-<lb /> ¢fatic presidential nominee more than 80<lb />percent of their vote, Clinton included. It<lb />mattered little that Clinton Ts eight-year<lb />record on social justice and civil rights<lb />igsues has been marked by a blurry mix of<lb />achievement, cautious rhetoric, neglect and<lb />political opportunism. And that Clinton<lb />spent two elections trying to out-Reagan<lb />Reagan in a chase to nab defecting white<lb />middle-class, ethnic and blue collar voters<lb />for the Democrats and distance himself<lb />from  ospecial interests ? (1.c. women and<lb />minorities).<lb /><lb />; Clinton also played, two major trump<lb />cards to maintain unbending black support.<lb />The first was Republican indifference "<lb />even flat out hostility "to blacks. It will<lb />_ take far more than Bush's much ballyhooed<lb />talk of diversity and inclusion and the show-<lb /><lb />piece parade of black, Latino and Asian<lb /><lb />, faces and Colin Powell that they rolled out<lb /><lb />at the Republican National Convention to<lb />overcome that bitter legacy of neglect and<lb />rejection.<lb /><lb />His other ace in the hole is that blacks<lb />have no other political choice beyond the<lb />Republicans. The talk of forming an inde-<lb />pendent black political party to challenge<lb />the Democrats and Republicans is the stuff<lb />of pipe dreams and delusion. Every effort<lb /><lb />Black America<lb /><lb />Powell issued a  oBlack Position Paper ? to<lb />the Democrats demanding that they share<lb />greater political power with blacks.<lb /><lb />In 1972, the Black Political Convention<lb />forced President Richard Nixon to increase<lb />minority business funding, propose non-<lb />punitive welfare reform, and strengthen<lb />affirmative action programs in the trades,<lb />and pushed the Democrats to adopt one of<lb />the most liberal activist platforms ever. In<lb />1984 and 1988, Jesse Jackson Ts Rainbow<lb />Coalition pushed the Democratic Party to<lb />support District of Columbia statehood,<lb /><lb />to form suchyyparyuhesicrashed on the bard y national health insurance. full employment.<lb />bedrosk of political division, fear and.tfar,., ppfitical redistricting and affirmative ac-<lb /><lb />ditionalism.<lb /><lb />Some black activists claim that Green<lb />Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader's<lb />credentials as a crusader for the environ-<lb />ment and against corporate rapaciousness<lb />merits a hard look. But Nader has a badly<lb />exposed Achilles heel. He has publicly said<lb />next to nothing about racial profiling, po-<lb />lice abuse, failing inner-city public schools,<lb />the obscene racial disparities in the prison<lb />and criminal justice system, the surge of<lb />murder violence in poor communitics, the<lb />dreary economic plight of many young<lb />blacks and corporate racism. His failure to<lb />speak out loudly on these problems will not<lb />help him shed his cloak of invisibility with<lb />black voters.<lb /><lb />Yet despite these racial pluses for the<lb />Democrats a significant number of blacks<lb />now call themselves independents. This<lb />means that potentially large numbers of<lb />black votes could be up for grabs for the<lb />Democrats and Republicans this election.<lb />History has amply shown that ethnic bloc<lb />voting can make or break a candidate, cam-<lb />paign and agenda.<lb /><lb />In 1960 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.<lb />threatened to boycott both the Republican<lb />AND Democratic conventions to force a<lb />stronger civil rights platform. In 1965<lb />Harlem Congressman Adam Clayton<lb /><lb />tion. In 1996, the National African-Ameri-<lb />can Leadership Summit demanded that<lb />Republicans and Democrats endorse an in-<lb />dependent black agenda.<lb /><lb />The social and economic devastation of<lb />many poor and working-class blacks has<lb />raised the political stakes even higher this<lb />election. Gore should not have a free hand<lb />to say and do as he pleases with black<lb />voters as his boss did for eight years under<lb />the presumption that their votes are in the<lb />bag. And Bush should not get away with<lb />spouting photo-op campaign stump slo-<lb />gans about making the Republican party<lb />inclusive and then doing nothing to make it<lb />a reality.<lb /><lb />Black voters can and should lobby, chal-<lb />lenge and pressure Bush and Gore to sup-<lb />port increased funding for jobs, health, and<lb />education programs, scrap the Clinton<lb />administration's failed drug policy, and a<lb />total overhaul of the racially-warped prison<lb />and criminal justice system. This is the<lb />price that Bush, and especially Gore, should<lb />have to pay for black votes. Blacks should<lb />have no dilemma about challenging them<lb />to pay that price.<lb /><lb />(Earl Ofari Hutchinson is the author of<lb />The Disappearance of Black Leadership.<lb />He can be heard on KPFK Radio, 90.7FM,<lb />Tuesdays, 7-8 p.m.)<lb /><lb />Play the "M" Voice Guéss<lb /><lb /> Who Contest and win two free CDs ! MAKES<lb />_ POLITICAL WORLD GO ROUND<lb /><lb />THE<lb /><lb />by: Dr. Lenora B. Fulani<lb /><lb />Joseph Lieberman Ts selection as Al Gore Ts<lb />running mate sparked ---among other things---<lb />anotehr controversy over anti-Semitic attitudes<lb />in the Black community.<lb />News, New York Ts oldest Black weekly, ran an<lb />editorial by its publisher emeritus Wilbert<lb />Tatum, which commented on the Lieberman<lb />selection.  oGore and his minons did it for the<lb />money, ? wrote Tatum, who has consistenly<lb />made himself a thorn in the side of the Jewish<lb />establishment.<lb /><lb />The Amsterdam<lb /><lb />He broke down the Democrats T strategy<lb /><lb />thusly:  oThe reasoning in the Gore camp went<lb />out all over the world to Jews of means: You Tve<lb />got to show me the money. When you do, one of yours will be given the second spot<lb />on the ticket. The word went out all over the world to Jews in every pocket of<lb />civilization and near-civilization, that the major protector of Jews in this world, the<lb />American government, is now available. But in order to get it, you Tve got to buy it.<lb /><lb />Tatums Ts remarks have predictably been rebuked by the New York Times and<lb />by Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League, who called the editorial<lb /> oinsidious, and an anti-Semitic canard... ? Rev. Jesse Jackson disagreed with the<lb />Amsterdam News T analysis though supported Tatum Ts right to free speech.<lb /><lb />Yet, the Tatum remarks, in my opinion, require a close look that goes beyond<lb />knee-jerk condemnation or a reconciliative invocation of the First Amendment.<lb /><lb />Mr. Tatum, of course, does have a right to say what he said. Moreover, there Ts<lb />a truth to it. Lieberman selection was about money and ---here Ts the rub--so is<lb />everything else that goes on in the Democratic Party. Tatum leaves himself open to}<lb />the charge of anti-Semitism because he will say it only about Jews. He never<lb />excoriates the Democratic Party for its relentless subservience to a multitude of<lb />special interests and their money. Tatum is no anti-Semite, but it soft on the<lb />Democratic Party. Sentinel Wire Services<lb /><lb />: (NNPA) "Ofall the stories we ran dur-<lb />ing the seven years I was editor of Emerge,<lb />we probably received the most mail in<lb />response to our cover story on Kemba<lb />Smith [May 1996], the former Hampton<lb />University student who, at the age of 24,<lb />was sentenced to 24 "years in prison for<lb />hér minor role in a drug ring. Even now, as<lb />Itravel around the country giving speeches,<lb />- someone invariably asks me about Kemba<lb />Smith, i<lb />_ | The NAACP Legal Defense and Edu-<lb />- eational Fund, which is representing<lb /> Kemba, summarizes her case succinctly:<lb /> oKemba Smith is a 28-year-old first-time<lb />offender. For nearly six years, she has<lb /><lb />been incarcerated on a 24 "year sentence  "<lb />conspiracy to distribute cocaine. This<lb /><lb />least one disloyal associate. ?<lb /><lb />Now, support for Kemba has come from<lb />two unlikely sources. One of them, the<lb />person primarily responsible for helping<lb /><lb />interpret the federal mandatory sentenc- .<lb /><lb />ing guidelines under which Kemba was<lb /><lb />sentenced, says the judge in the case mis- d<lb />interpreted the rules that should have ap-.__<lb /><lb />plied to Kemba.<lb /><lb />That startling admission was made<lb />by Sharon O, Henegan, director of the<lb />United States Sentencing Commission's<lb /><lb /> Office of Education and Sentencing<lb />Practice. Meteorologists,<lb />Climatologists, Seismologists,<lb />Geologists, Doppler Radars, satel-<lb />lites, televisions, and radios kept<lb />us informed, which was a good<lb />thing. Some took heed and some<lb />didn't.<lb />September 1999, a frantic fero-<lb />cious torrential terrifying hurri-<lb />~cane named Floyd with extreme<lb />wind and rain came through<lb />eastern North Carolina and scared<lb />the tidewaters, coastal plains, and<lb />piedmont sections of the state for<lb />years to come. Carolinians knew<lb />a hurricane was approaching, and<lb />were prepared as usual, but the<lb />vigorous amount of water was<lb />unexpected, leaving catastrophic<lb />results. Virtually all roads and<lb />many bridges in eastern North<lb />Carolina were inaccessible. Parts<lb />of Interstate 40 and 95 were<lb />closed. Amtrak stopped running.<lb />If this  owere an earthquake, it<lb />probably would have been a 7.4<lb />or more on the Richter Scale. The<lb />areas were as if chemical gases<lb /><lb />were released _ intentionally.<lb />Carolina North was in trouble and<lb />needed help.<lb /><lb />People were without jobs,<lb />homes, schools, businesses, some<lb />churches, electricity, water, and<lb />separated from family members.<lb />They were disconnected from<lb />(towns, cities, counties and) parts<lb />of the State because of impassable<lb />bridges, highways, and sinkholes.<lb /><lb />People realized they were in the<lb />same boat, on the same level,<lb />equal, and couldn't run. Public<lb />officials, Ham radios, and tele-<lb />phones were the only way for<lb />communication. This was a seri-<lb />Ous situation, and for some,<lb />reality had yet to soak in.<lb />Vehicles, animal carcasses, cas-<lb />kets, chemicals, and garbage<lb />floated in and on the water. 0<lb />what a smell! Snakes and mosqui-<lb />toes were everywhere. A health<lb />hazard to any community.<lb /><lb />The River Tar over-flowed her<lb />banks without warning and<lb /> ocaused the first black township in<lb />America named Princeville to be<lb />temporarily erased from the map.<lb />The water came quick and was<lb />very dangerous. It also, without<lb />permission, flooded some of the<lb />historical city of Tarboro, which is<lb />across the bridge. The President<lb />of the United States, Governor of<lb />North Carolina, FEMA represen-<lb />tatives, and other public officials<lb />were in Tarboro, and of course,<lb />local, state, national, and interna-<lb />tional media arrived. The<lb />President, Governor, FEMA, and<lb />others flew over eastern North<lb />Carolina to evaluate the damage<lb />and destruction.<lb /><lb />The River Tar continued east-<lb />ward towards. the city of<lb />Greenville... The results were the<lb />same, if not worse, which<lb /><lb />rompted authorities to put<lb /><lb />rpletown under a curfew. One<lb />of the utility buildings had up to<lb />Six feet of water, and most, if not<lb />all of their vehicles had to be<lb />replaced. The airport and planes<lb />Were submerged. East Carolina<lb />University and Pitt Community<lb />College were closed for two<lb />weeks. Help from the military was<lb />there to access people across the<lb />River Tar, which had widened<lb />over a_ mile. Numerous<lb />Blackhawks clouded the sky car-<lb />rying citizens from water-soak<lb />communities to dry shelters. East<lb />Care received assistance with<lb />another medical chopper from<lb />Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.<lb /><lb />The authorities were relieved<lb />when other officers, public offi-<lb />cials, and volunteers within the<lb />state and country arrived, includ-<lb />ing the military police. North<lb />Carolina State Highway Patrol<lb />brought food cards and other<lb />important items from Raleigh by<lb />chopper for specific purposés.<lb />Henderson County Sheriff used<lb />horses to go where vehicles<lb />couldn't. Crime halted and illegal<lb />drugs hiding in the woods were<lb />totally destroyed, which was<lb />good. As days proceeded and the<lb />water settled, more public offi-<lb />cials and many tractor- trailers<lb />arrived for distribution.<lb />University Medical Center or<lb />PCMH never closed, as usual, but<lb />certainly was on high alert. The<lb />Red Cross, Salvation Army, and<lb />non-profit organizations were<lb />challenge, yet limited at times in<lb />the crises, but prevailed. All<lb /><lb />donated items as food, water, and |<lb /><lb />clothes were a welcome sight<lb />because many people were in<lb />need. Tetanus shots were avail-<lb />able to the public without cost,<lb />and hepatitis shots were given as<lb />a precaution. Fema trailer parks<lb />were in Rocky Mount, Tarboro,<lb /><lb />Greenville, Kinston, Grifton and<lb />many parts of eastern North<lb />Carolina for those who needed a<lb />place to stay. .<lb /><lb />The "original" Washington,<lb />North Carolina received her fill<lb />share of the storm and aftermath.<lb />The water in the River Tar-<lb />Pamlico and Sound Pamlico were<lb />not clean. It was a dirty brown<lb />color that continued eastward<lb />toward the blue green Atlantic<lb />Ocean. Lack of oxygen prohib-<lb />ited sea creatures from living.<lb />They wouldn't have been good to<lb />eat anyway.<lb /><lb />The River Roanoke had her fair<lb />share in Williamston, Martin<lb />County, which prolonged fishing<lb />and other activities for a while.<lb /><lb />The historical city of Windsor<lb />was as Tarboro. It received<lb />unwanted, saturated, contami-<lb />nated water .from the River<lb />Cashie, ar reeks and water-<lb />ways. Over six feet of water<lb />visited the town for days. Like<lb />other cities and towns, all she<lb />could do was wait.<lb /><lb />Another historical city named<lb />Edenton near the River Chowan<lb />and Sound Albemarle were<lb />above normal bringing salt water<lb />into fresh. Many cities, towns,<lb />and communities in the northeast-<lb />ern part of Carolina North as<lb />Ahoskie and Elizabeth City had<lb />flooded areas.<lb /><lb />The "shad" town of Grifton,<lb />located in two counties was<lb />flooded because of. © the<lb />Contentnea Creek. The police,<lb />fire department, and the grocery<lb />store were less than. a half-mile<lb />from the creek, and ruin,<lb /><lb />Water released flowing down:<lb /><lb />the River Neuse from Raleigh)<lb />south-southeast flooded parts of<lb /><lb />Goldsboro, Kinston, and New<lb />Bern. The small town of Seven<lb />Springs in Wayne County was as<lb />Princeville.<lb /><lb />Duplin County received a<lb />tremendous amount of damage.<lb /><lb />The River North<lb />East Cape Fear destroyed farm-<lb />lands, animals, and flooded the<lb />small town of Chinquapin.<lb />Highways became waterways.<lb />Cattle pushed down the highway<lb />on a porch to safety is not the way<lb />it's usually done. Many carcasses<lb />needed to be moved and buried or<lb />burned, but couldn't because the<lb />water had yet to recede.<lb /><lb />The River Cape Fear was above<lb />normal many miles north of<lb /><lb />Wilmington. Actually, all major  "<lb /><lb />rivers, waterways, and lakes were<lb />overflowed and contaminated for<lb />weeks.<lb /><lb />NC highway 12 was one of<lb />many that was relocated and<lb />paved. As time passed, the Outer<lb />Banks was relieved to see visitors.<lb />So far, Cape Hatteras and the<lb />other lighthouses are still stand-<lb />ing. Yes, a lot of water flowed<lb />under and over bridges into<lb />living-rooms and class-rooms for<lb />quite a while, which shook<lb />Carolinians mind and held them<lb />at a standstill-attention to watch,<lb />wait, think, and be grateful be-<lb />cause it could have been worse.<lb /><lb />It's been said, "this was the 500<lb />year flood, then changed tu the<lb />100 year flood ? which has been<lb />called, "The Flood Of The<lb />Century;" nevertheless, the major-<lb />ity of eastern Carolinians didn't<lb />have flood insurance. For some, it<lb />wasn't required, others didn't have<lb />the slightest idea they'd need it,<lb />and many couldn't pay because of<lb />their budget. | believe policies<lb />have been changed since then.<lb />We've been taught a valuable<lb />priceless lesson.<lb /><lb />Without a doubt, North Carolina<lb /><lb />has had her fair share of hurri-<lb />canes. Carolina North has<lb />witness history and produced<lb />tapes for generations to study.<lb /><lb />Epilogue:<lb /><lb />We call this a flood, but if you<lb />want to know the truth, it really<lb />was a speckle on the land com-<lb />pared to what had happened when<lb />Noah was in the ark. Therefore,<lb />God left the sign of a rainbow as<lb />a promise to mankind that it<lb />would not happen, again of such<lb />magnitude. Acts<lb />10:44-46a-While Peter was still<lb />speaking these words, the Holy<lb />Spirit fell upon all those who<lb />heard the word. And those of the<lb />circumcision who believed were<lb />astonished, as many as came with<lb />Peter, because the gift of the Holy<lb /><lb />Spirit had been poured out on the<lb />Gentiles also. For they heard them<lb />speak with tongues and magnify<lb />God.<lb /><lb />Acts 11:1 5-And as I began to<lb />speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon<lb />them, as upon us at the beginning.<lb />The first baptism in the Holy<lb />Spirit took place about 33 A.D.<lb />Toward the end of the book of<lb />Acts, about 54 A.D., Paul came to<lb />Ephesus. In Acts 19:2a Paul said<lb />to them, "Did you receive the<lb />Holy Spirit when you believed?"<lb />This was the first question Paul<lb />asked the believers when they<lb />arrived in Ephesus. He knew that<lb />every believer needed the power<lb /><lb />of the Holy Spirit to be an<lb />effective witness. Peter said that everyone<lb />would receive the gift of the Holy<lb />Spirit. Acts 2:38-Then Peter said<lb />to them, "Repent, and let every<lb />one of you be baptized in the<lb />name of Jesus Christ for the<lb />remission of sins; and you shall<lb />receive the gift of the Holy<lb />Spirit." If you then, being<lb />evil, know how to give good gifts<lb />to your children, how much more<lb />will your heavenly Father give the<lb /><lb />Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!<lb />To receive the gift of the Holy<lb />Spirit we are to simply ask for it,<lb />and then receive it by faith.<lb /><lb />Open Monday<lb />ie 9-5<lb /><lb />SAAD RENTALS<lb /><lb />1-, 2-, and 3- bedroom housing units<lb /><lb />REAL ESTATE<lb /><lb />907 Dickinson Ave., Greenville, NC, (252) 757-3191<lb /><lb />Since 1949<lb /><lb />Section<lb />8 Accepted<lb /><lb />é<lb /><lb />; 14.09%.<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />Public Notice<lb />North Carolina Department of Transportation |<lb /><lb />Participation By Disadvantaged Business Enterprises In<lb />The Department's Federa!-Ald Program<lb /><lb />The North Carolina Department of Transportation |<lb />nas established an overall Departmental Goal for<lb />: Disadvantaged Business Enterprises In confor- |<lb />' mance with 49 CFR 26 for Federal Fiscal Year |<lb />| 2001. It began as a<lb />rash on the back of my neck that<lb />literally spread and covered my<lb />entire body. | was broken out in<lb />sores from head to toe. My body<lb />was so inflamed with these sores<lb />and lesions that it took three<lb />physicians to study my case.<lb /><lb />Eventually. | was rushed to<lb />Chapel Hill, NC to see another<lb />physician. My physical predica-<lb />ment at that time was running a<lb />fever of 1020 F. severe sharp joint<lb /><lb />pains (very similar to that of<lb /><lb />arthritis) throughout my entire<lb />body inside and Out. Due to the<lb />irritated skin. | was unable to<lb />bathe for two months. | was<lb /><lb />unable to wear clothing, and my<lb />walking was like a baby taking its<lb />first steps. It was very time<lb />consuming for me to even walk to<lb />the bathroom, for the pain was so<lb />severe and my skin would literally<lb />peel off my body.<lb /><lb />The only time | put anything on<lb />my body was when I underwent a<lb />"bodywrap" treatment. A home<lb />health nurse would visit me three<lb />times a day to administer this<lb />treatment. which consisted of:<lb />@Applying a cream called<lb />Triamcinolane (which is a steroid<lb />cream) all over my body<lb /><lb />@Applying thermal underwear<lb />that was submersed in hot water<lb />then placed on my body<lb /><lb />@Having me sit up wrapped in a<lb /><lb />blanket for two hours.<lb /><lb />This process had to be done three<lb /><lb />times a day. The pain was so<lb />severe! My body was very hide-<lb />ous in appearance. | was unable<lb />to sleep at nights. My sister<lb />moved in with me to extend care<lb />for me. | would just lay in the bed<lb />and cry so profusely from the<lb />pain! It was the most difficult<lb />thing that | ever had to endure.<lb />Oh. God how severe the pain was<lb />that I suffered! | told my sister<lb />and God that I didn't want to live<lb />because the pain was just so bad<lb />that I couldn't see myself going<lb />on. My .other treatment was<lb />taking a pill called Methotrexate<lb />(a chemotherapy pill). This medi-<lb />cation made me very sick, and |<lb />suffered the side effect of losing<lb />my hair from it.<lb /><lb />One day when | was sitting up<lb />during my treatment. | called out<lb />to God to have mercy on me.<lb /><lb />| just started to confess my<lb /><lb />healing. and I would say. "God. |<lb />thank you for healing my body." |<lb />said this over and over. Each time<lb />that I did my treatment, | thanked<lb />God for healing my body.<lb />Eventually. the sores started to<lb />leave my body.<lb /><lb />"Glory Be To God." My sister<lb />noticed it first. God has given me<lb />brand new skin from the top of<lb />my head to the bottom of my feet.<lb />| have new skin all over! You see.<lb />there is indeed life and death in<lb />the tongue. God healed my entire<lb />body.<lb /><lb />I had gotten over the psoriasis in<lb />November. I returned to work on<lb />November 15. 1999. After four<lb />days of being back at work. |<lb />pulled a muscle in my left groin<lb />area, trying to help my co-worker<lb /><lb />with her patient that was fainting.<lb />I went to the doctor and she took<lb />me out of work. | said, "Lord,<lb />why am I out of work again? ? |<lb />had been out of work since<lb />August 1999 and returned in<lb />November 1999 for only four<lb />days. I really needed to work.<lb />Well, as I thought to myself,<lb />"What else can happen to me."<lb />more sad news followed. On<lb />November 22, 1999,1 was diag-<lb />nosed with breast cancer at Tage<lb />30. I couldn't believe it! I didn't<lb />understand how this happened to<lb />me. It was more common to hear<lb />of older women having breast<lb />cancer. I cried the day that I found<lb />out | went for a walk and had a<lb />talk with God. He spoke to my<lb />heart and asked me, "Where is<lb />your faith? Don't you see where |<lb />have brought you from?" | finally<lb />gave this situation to God. |<lb />realized what | experienced with<lb />the psoriasis and How God healed<lb />my body, so there was no doubt<lb /><lb />that he would do the same with<lb />this breast cancer.<lb /><lb />It was because of my faith. God<lb />was preparing me for my next<lb />test. It was only<lb />in one spot and I only had to have<lb />a lumpectomy instead of a mas-<lb />tectomy. God was ordering my<lb />steps. Because | had previously<lb />taken chemo, | knew what it was<lb />like to lose my hair and | knew<lb />what it was like to be sick from<lb />chemo.<lb /><lb />| had a lumpectomy on<lb />November 30, 1999 and all of the<lb />cancer was removed. | had to<lb /><lb />All Things are<lb /><lb />=<lb /><lb />ie a<lb /> he,<lb /><lb />take four  chemotherapy ¢<lb />ments and am presently undef<lb /><lb />ing radiation. | am cancer  freé.<lb /><lb />today... Since |<lb />started chemotherapy in January,<lb />1 have been experiencing such<lb />severe headaches that the doctors<lb />thought I had an aneurysm on my<lb />brain or the cancer had resur-<lb />faced. Once again, | gave the<lb />situation to God. I'll have you<lb />know that on March 24, 2000,<lb /><lb />| was given an MRI treatment<lb />and it was NEGATIVE! Thank<lb />you God!<lb /><lb />So | say to you no matter what<lb />you're going through, don't give<lb />up. Give it to God. | am indeed =<lb />one of God's miracles. God<lb />has done a miraculous thing in my<lb /><lb />life and | just want to share it. I<lb />give Him all the praise. I'm so<lb />honored that He chose me to go<lb />through. Keep your eye on God<lb />and He will see you through -<lb /><lb />I now dedicate my life to doing<lb />God's work and telling people of<lb />His goodness. One involved<lb />a group of suspected Death Row<lb />record label supporters and/or em-<lb />ployees, veteran  ogangster ? rapper/<lb />producer Dr. Dre, and possibly Long<lb />Beach gang affiliated rap artist,<lb />Snoop Doggy Dogg.<lb /><lb />Eyewitnesses say a group of about<lb />10 to 15 seemingly young African<lb />American men wearing Death Row t-<lb />shirts reportedly rushed the backstage<lb />or rushed from the backstage into the<lb />audience heading toward Dr. Dre to<lb />lay hands on him.<lb /><lb />Other press agencies claim that<lb />Snoop Doggy Dogg was also a target<lb />of the wolf pack Ts anger, but that<lb />hasn Tt been confirmed. Reports of<lb />physical damage to either rapper<lb />wasn Tt known at press time.<lb /><lb />eee<lb /><lb />0 RE SSS See<lb /><lb />_ dressed inregular clothes and seemed<lb />_as if they were part of the talent, But<lb />Shortly after greeting people, they  "<lb />went into the bathroom and changed.<lb />_ into their Death Row paraphernalia.<lb /><lb /> oWe saw a group of men running<lb />towards Dr. Dre and we didn Tt know<lb />what was going on. Everything hap-<lb />pened so fast, ? said Williams.<lb /><lb />Another main event broke out<lb />between the entourage of Vallejo,<lb />Calif., rapper E-40, and another<lb />Northern Californiarapper by the name<lb />of Minister, According to hip hop spe-<lb />cialist Davey d Ts_ website,<lb />www.daveyd.com, E-40 was con-<lb />fronted by Minister and then provoked<lb />when the disgruntled rapper pushed the<lb />multi-millionaire, E-40. Sadly, Minis-<lb />ter apparently got the beat down ofa<lb />lifetime and is now planning to sue his<lb />arch-rival.<lb /><lb />Other fights were also reported, but<lb />because of the mass confusion, the<lb />accuracy of who and why are still in<lb />question. Many have vocalized that the<lb />happenings at the Source Awards not<lb />only puts a damper on hip hop, but it<lb /><lb />also puts a mirror to its face and forces<lb />everyone to examine the state of hip<lb />hop and the direction that it will go.<lb /><lb />As for The Source, many are also<lb />wondering if the so-called  oHip Hop<lb />Authority ? will make it through this<lb />perfect storm.<lb /><lb />~y<lb /><lb />ending Available<lb />C52.<lb /><lb />ff  "~ Famity VIOLENCE PROGRAM, INC.<lb />COLENIT COUNTY.           <lb />The Interview with<lb />Kam Williams .<lb /><lb />KW: Was there competition<lb />among the four of you on the<lb />Kings of Comedy tour?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oNo, there Ts so much<lb />mutual admiration that we actually<lb />had a good time. Plus, DL and |<lb />had already done a nice theater tour<lb />together after being the hosts of<lb />Comic View. We love being on the<lb />road with each other. ?<lb /><lb />KW: The 100 city tour made<lb />$40 million. Why make a movie?<lb /><lb />DL:  oSometimes people just<lb />don Tt like being out among folks<lb />they don Tt know. ?<lb /><lb />Steve:  oWhat you're really<lb />saying DL is... ?<lb /><lb />Bernie: (cuts him off)  oWhite<lb />folks can Tt wait to see this movie. I<lb />talked to a bunch of White folks the<lb />other day. ?<lb /><lb />DL:  oHow many? ?<lb /><lb />Bernie:  oSeventy-five. I<lb />declare all of them asked me the<lb />same thing:  When Ts this movie<lb />gonna come out? T ?<lb /><lb />KW: What Ts it like to do<lb />stand-up live in front of huge<lb />audiences of 10,000 to 25,000<lb />people every week for two years?<lb /><lb />DL:  oSome people jump out<lb />of planes, some ride roller<lb />coasters, some go.to scary<lb />movies. We tell jokes, but it Ts a<lb />similar type of euphoria we<lb />expéfience. ?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oA lot of people will<lb />never experience sitting in the<lb />center of the stage of a joint<lb />filled to the rafters with 25,000<lb />people stomping and kicking and<lb />laughing. And to share the stage<lb />with these three guys is a<lb />phenomenal feeling. And I<lb />couldn't even tell you how to<lb />prepare for that. For me, every<lb /><lb />night I did it was the same: scary.<lb />The first 2 or 3 minutes was just<lb />unbelievable, because you didn Tt<lb />know if they were going to<lb />accept you or not. ?<lb /><lb />KW: What was Spike Lee Ts<lb />influence once you decided to film<lb />the show. Did you have to tone<lb />down or change your acts?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oWe didn Tt have to<lb />change material, for the most part,<lb />because it Ts a concert film based on<lb />the success of the tour. We edit<lb />ourselves, anyway, after we get on<lb />stage and feel what direction the<lb /><lb />crowd wants us to go. We took the  "<lb /><lb />energy of performing live and<lb />trusted: the cameras to catch it.<lb />Spike had enough cameras there  "<lb />he had us covered so we could go<lb />out and do our thing. They<lb />recorded the true essence. There<lb />were 16,000 people in the theater<lb />so we had to perform for the live<lb />crowd. We couldn Tt really think<lb />about playing to the cameras. ?<lb /><lb />KW: Which of you is the leader<lb />of this group? Who Ts the<lb />headliner? .<lb /><lb />Steve:  oWe've never had, in the<lb />two years we Tve been together,<lb />even one incident of ego. Never<lb />had foul words or disputes. We sit<lb />in the dressing room together and<lb />everything. When we started this<lb />we understood one thing: that if we<lb />stuck together, we could win. But<lb />if we acted like rappers or some<lb />damn singers with tremendous<lb />egos, we'd lose this opportunity. ?<lb /><lb />KW: So, no star trips, even<lb />though you were on the road so<lb />long?<lb /><lb />Steve:  oYou do not read about<lb />us in tabloids because we have<lb />families we respect. You don Tt see<lb />the IRS coming after us, because<lb />we understand that we have to pay<lb />our taxes. We have the best<lb />financial people in the game with<lb />us. All of us are very smart<lb />businessmen. When we talk turkey<lb />backstage, it ain Tt about babes and<lb />all that b-s, we Tre talking about<lb />stocks and mutual funds. We keep<lb />our noses clean, we do our business<lb />and we go home. ?<lb /><lb />KW: Did-you expect the tour to<lb /><lb />AY Z OXY OLY<lb />Joy i Bz 10<lb /><lb />reenville<lb /><lb />. | wit ook Ga oer tas We're of<lb />~ very professional. And after we<lb />saw the ball rolling, we want to  "<lb /><lb />keep this thing nice and smooth.<lb /><lb />So we'd have exchanges like:<lb /><lb />_  What do you need to be successful  "<lb /><lb />tonight?"  Well, Steve, if you<lb /><lb />could bring me on like this. T  OK,  "<lb />cool, what you need? T  A little<lb /><lb />more time on the back end  ocause<lb />I'm closing the show. T  Alright,<lb />I'll cut some of this down. T  Mac,<lb />tonight I Tm gonna do a tight five<lb />and then I Tm gonna bring you<lb />because the crowd looks a little<lb />tired. T ?<lb /><lb />KW: So, you really worked at<lb />supporting each other.<lb /><lb />Steve:  That was collaboration<lb />among veterans who've been doing<lb />ita long time. We Tre smart enough<lb /><lb />to know not to screw this up. We  "<lb /><lb />make, to be honest with you,<lb />millions of dollars. ?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oBut we paid our dues.<lb />Humble beginnings... Smoke filled<lb />rooms... not getting paid. But<lb />we're at a whole other level now.<lb />There was a time when we could<lb />give a damn about life insurance..<lb />We have.to consider more than<lb />ourselves. We have people to take<lb />care of.<lb /><lb />Steve:  oLike the brother said,<lb />we've got kids, parents and<lb />families, man. We've been<lb />fighting too hard to get here. So,<lb />we just stay unified. We don Tt<lb />have no leader. There Ts none of<lb />that, period. ?<lb /><lb />DL:  oThis has been a long<lb />struggle  " I Tm just glad somebody<lb />went through it with me. Even<lb />three years ago, we couldn Tt get<lb />booked into mainstream comedy<lb />clubs. So, when we played<lb />Madison Square [Garden], that was<lb />a humbling experience. I<lb />remember whispering to Steve,<lb /> oWe can Tt blow this. T ?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oWith a tour of this<lb />magnitude, you can Tt afford to lose<lb />an audience of 20,000 people. So,<lb />if you Tre the one on stage at any<lb />time, you're the headliner. It Ts<lb />your job to keep the ball rolling<lb />once that crowd is up and laughing.<lb />We knew we had the right<lb />combination and we trusted each<lb />other. That's why this tour worked<lb />for us. We knew that no matter<lb />what position you were asked to<lb />hold, we each knew we could hold<lb />it. We switched up to do whatever<lb />was necessary to make that night Ts<lb />show work. That allowed for a lot<lb /><lb />of good times, we sat up, laughed,<lb />made money and had fun. ?<lb />KW: So, what did Spike Lee<lb /><lb />just a voyeur.<lb /><lb /> And he proved he tdertod |<lb />a ty. ? eet<lb /><lb /> DL:  oThey forced him on us.<lb /><lb />We don Tt even like Spike. He was<lb />Spike had the<lb /><lb />amazing talent to stay out of the<lb />way and not really influence<lb /><lb />anything. No, he brought a "<lb />creative vision to the show. He ©<lb /><lb />didn Tt want it to look like straight<lb />stand-up ?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oRudy Ray Moore was<lb />my choice for director of the<lb />movie. ?<lb /><lb />Bernie:  oSpike's last five:<lb /><lb />projects failed. And he saw an<lb />opportunity. He called me 10<lb />times before I returned his call.<lb />I Tm telling you the God Ts honest<lb />truth. ?<lb /><lb />DL:  oHe wanted to call it<lb /> Crooklyn 2. T ?<lb /><lb />Steve:  oBernie said he wanted<lb />Mario Van Peebles to direct. ?<lb /><lb />Bernie: (Getting worked up)<lb /> oThis was the easiest shoot for<lb />Spike. All he had to do was turn<lb />the light on. He didn Tt have no<lb />script. He didn Tt have to write<lb />nothing. We wrote our own script<lb />and did all the hard work. And<lb /><lb />he Ts taking all the credit. The more<lb /><lb />I think about it the angrier I get.<lb />That little cricket came up and got<lb />on a train. He got on a good ride.<lb />And if this thing does well, I Tm<lb />gonna speak up about it. He didn Tt<lb />have to do nothing. All he had to<lb />do was point all night, saying,  Get<lb />that, get that, get that. ?<lb /><lb />Cedric: (Cuts him off)  oDon Tt<lb />Say it, Bernie. ?<lb /><lb />Bernie:  oI already did his film<lb /> Get on the Bus. T He didn Tt give<lb />me nothing for that. I can Tt let<lb />Spike just go on pimping me like<lb />that. If things don Tt go right, I'll<lb />tell you, I Tm kicking Spike Ts ass. ?<lb /><lb />Cedric:  oLet it go, man<lb />Bernie:  oYou can quote me on<lb />that. ?<lb /><lb />Steve:  oI Tm starting to feel like<lb />Bernie towards Spike, now. I<lb />haven Tt seen the movie yet. I don Tt<lb />even know how it looks. But I<lb /><lb />know he went into the editing room<lb /><lb />with his little short ass. John<lb />Brown died at Harper Ts Ferry, West<lb />Virginia in 1859.<lb />-+ The  oreal ? John Brown had an<lb />entire book written about him in<lb />1909 by W.E. Burghardt Dubois<lb />which was most recently reprinted<lb />in 1996 by International Publish-<lb />ers. One of the greatest women in<lb />African American history, Harriet<lb />Tubman, regarded this John Brown<lb />and not President Abraham Lin-<lb />coln, as the true emancipator of her<lb />people. The real John Brown was<lb />born in Torrington, Connecticut on<lb />May 9, 1800 about four months<lb />before the attempted insurrection<lb />. of slaves under Gabriel in Virginia<lb />in September of the same year.<lb />.He was raised in Hudson, Ohio<lb />where his family migrated in 1805.<lb />By the age of 16, he had already<lb />joined the church and soon became<lb />such an experienced bible student<lb />that  owhen any person was reading<lb />he would correct the least mistake. ?<lb />His love for religion was exceeded<lb />only by his love for family where he<lb />fathered 20 well-disciplined, hard-<lb />working children. After seven of<lb />his-children died before adulthood,<lb />fe concluded that in some way his<lb />bwn sin and shortcoming were<lb /> bringing upon him  othe vengeful<lb />punishment of God. ? He felt his<lb />greatest sin was not doing enough<lb /> oto increase the amount of human<lb />happiness. ?<lb /><lb />In 1839, a turning point occurred<lb />in Brown Ts life when he was visited<lb />bya black preacher named Fayette.<lb /><lb />tte described slavery as  othe<lb />west and filthiest blot on 19th<lb />ealury civilization. He added:  oAs<lb />#thool of brutality and human<lb />suffering, of female prostitution and<lb />male debauchery; as a mockery of<lb />marriage and defilement of family<lb />life; as a darkening of reason, and<lb />spiritual death, slavery has no par-<lb />allel. ? John Brown fell to his knees<lb />and  oImplored God Ts blessing on<lb />his purpose to make active war on<lb />slavery, and he bound his family in<lb />$olemn and secret compact to labor<lb />for emancipation. ?<lb /><lb />John Brown was convinced that<lb />the first step toward emancipation<lb />was education. He noted that all<lb />pro-slavery staies were vehemently<lb />Opposed to educating slaves and<lb />tnade this a capital offense, John<lb />Was also aware that slaveholders<lb />aotively pursued African American<lb />sohools and churches and burned<lb />them to the ground after Nat<lb />oe slave revolt on Aug. 21,<lb /><lb />I,<lb /><lb />Brown felt that once the master-<lb />slave relationship was broken, black<lb />people deserved their own state and<lb />educated blacks would be needed<lb /><lb />for, self-government. To this day | still remem-<lb />ber hearing my late Aunt Alarce,<lb />my great grandma Renes and my<lb />grandma Edna talk about the<lb />good times they had at these<lb />amily reunions and how family<lb />is everything. You can always<lb /><lb />count on family and God to have<lb /><lb />your back no matter what you've<lb />done. Someone is always pray-<lb />ing for you no matter what.<lb /><lb />I'm writing you this essay to<lb />tell you what this family reunion<lb />means to me. This family has<lb />shown me so much and have<lb />taught me so much. Not only has<lb />this family taught me about what<lb />family, really is but what family<lb />means. family is your backbone<lb />and moral support. Family is<lb />who You turn to when your<lb />friends have turned their back<lb />on you. And no matter what has<lb />happened with your family they<lb />might not always act like you<lb />want them to, but they're gomg<lb />to always love you. Knowing<lb /><lb />someone is always going to be<lb />there to love you, or just some-<lb />one to talk to, is a lot of<lb />assurance that we young people<lb />need more oft these days.<lb /><lb />Family in general to me means<lb />seni .
