They blame<lb /><lb />_ the system. But most of all, they<lb />blame the new immigrants. They<lb />are ruining it for blacks, who are<lb />just now starting to get paid, they<lb /><lb />In doing that, though, many in<lb />-. the community are missing the<lb /><lb />point and falling into an old trap<lb />that has worked once before.<lb /><lb />It was just after the turn of the<lb />_ century. The labor movement was<lb />burgeoning, and poor whites and<lb />blacks had discovered that they<lb />had quite a bit in common.<lb /><lb />They banded together, most<lb />prominently in the Grange move-<lb />ment, to try to improve the lot of<lb />the working class: better pay,<lb />higher wages and improved<lb />safety. .<lb /><lb />American industry had been<lb />. getting a free ride from its labor<lb />for a long time. The captains of<lb />|. industry got together and came<lb />_ wp-with-a:solution. _<lb /><lb />The résult was .the White Su-<lb /><lb /> _premacy movement. It was stun-<lb />ningly successful, not only in the<lb />South, but in the heavily union-<lb />ized North and Midwest.<lb /><lb />Racial hatred, fear and: the un-<lb />certainty of the times was used to<lb /><lb /> opit one group against the other | ?<lb /><lb />and drive wages back down.<lb /><lb />~~ Workers in the North were told,<lb />~ oTf you keep on demanding more.<lb /><lb />money and better conditions,<lb />we'll just bring in more Negroes.<lb />They just came up from the cot-<lb />ton fields down South, and they Tll<lb />work. for half what you earn and<lb />not complain about safety. ? Guard ar-<lb />mories and lodge halls to decry<lb />the tumult T T that society had<lb />been placed in since the forced<lb />emancipation of the Civil War.<lb /><lb />Everywhere, the speakers said,<lb />there were black people running<lb />businesses, holding elective of-<lb />fices. Blacks were riding buses<lb />and trains, and even working<lb />alongside whites. __<lb /><lb /> oWhat will be next? Will Ne-<lb />groes want to go to school with<lb />your children? ?<lb /><lb />The result was a mass ejection<lb />of black union members in the<lb />North and a slew of Jim Crow<lb />laws in the South.<lb /><lb />Poor white and black workers<lb />had successfully been turned<lb />against each other, to the extent<lb />that they remain almost uni-<lb />formly hostile to this day.<lb /><lb />Now we see the same dynamic<lb />working. The economy is boom-<lb />ing, and wages will have to go<lb />up "that Ts the way a free<lb />economy works.<lb /><lb />In an effort to short-circuit this<lb />and keep the windfall from the<lb />boom where it belongs T T "the<lb /><lb />middle and upper class "the same<lb /><lb />thing is being done.<lb /><lb />Will it work again, or will<lb />blacks and Latinos band together<lb />to make sure that everybody gets<lb />a share of the pie?<lb /><lb />We happen to think there Ts<lb />enough to go around for every-<lb />body.<lb /><lb />Whether it does, will be seen.<lb /><lb />A Whole New Race<lb /><lb />As is noted in our front-page<lb />story, the much-watched New<lb />York Senate race has turned into<lb />a completely new ball game.<lb /><lb />When the idea was first floated,<lb />it seemed like a very tight con-<lb />test, with First Lady Hillary Clin-<lb />ton getting the benefit of sympa-<lb />thy for her stalwart performance<lb />in the wake of the Monica<lb />| Lewinsky affair and the impeach-<lb /><lb />ment that followed.<lb /><lb />Then, after that wore off, it<lb />looked like a cake walk for New<lb />_ York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani,<lb /><lb />_ with his tough, I-cleaned-up-<lb /><lb />Timés-Square image counterbal-<lb />_ ancing her bleeding-heart liberal-<lb />ism among the conservative up-<lb />_. Having no record means<lb />nothing that opponents can seize<lb />on to point a finger at. |<lb /><lb />And the First Lady has nothing,<lb />if not a record. Whitewater, the<lb />several mini-scandals that con-<lb />servatives continually harangue<lb />over but which seem not to bother<lb />anybody else, and even hubby<lb />Bill Ts antics will surely dog her in<lb />her attempt to barge into New<lb />York politics.<lb /><lb />The o carpetbagger T ? People love to move to New<lb />York to run for office.<lb /><lb />The outcome of the race will<lb /> largely hingé on the new candi-<lb />date.<lb /><lb />Will he present a sane, moder-<lb />ate alternative to Mayor Mad-<lb />man?<lb /><lb />Or, pressed to take stances on<lb />hard issues, will he be unable to<lb />resist the urge to go ideological<lb />and self-destruct as well?<lb /><lb />_ Stay tuned.<lb /><lb />ons or concerns<lb /><lb />creed. full buman rights. Apparently Minister Farrakhan called for the<lb />meeting and interview with Attillah to clear the air about<lb />what role, if any, he played in the assassination of Malcolm<lb />X on that fateful day at the Audubon Ballroom.in Harlem in<lb />1965 "a horrible event made more tragic by the fact that<lb />Dr. Shabazz and her children witnessed the: murder of<lb />Malcolm. Recovering from prostate cancer and apparently<lb />intent on moving the Nation of Islam (NOI) closer to ortho-<lb />doxy and more widespread acceptability, the highly publi-<lb />cized meeting/interview seemed designed to take yet an-<lb />other step to heal the painful wounds opened within the<lb />black community over the calculated demise of our oBlack<lb />Shining Prince. ?<lb /><lb />Much of the pain and anguish associated with the assas-<lb />sination of Brother Malcolm centers around allegations and<lb />suspicions that the up and coming Haleem Abdul Farra-<lb />khan, a young, charismatic and ambitious minister, turned<lb />on and betrayed Malcolm, his mentor and friend, to curry<lb /><lb />favor with. the Honorable Elijah Muhammad<lb />takin, Piao piace in T the hierarchy<lb />Some have even accused Farrakhan of giving th<lb />kill Malcolm. Certainly the words he uttered in various<lb /><lb />speeches and public appearances prior to Malcolm's death<lb /><lb />were damaging and deadly. In one such speech, the fiery<lb /><lb />Farrakhan proclaimed that Malcolm was oworthy of<lb /><lb />death, ? Given what we know about the command structure<lb /><lb />and discipline of the NOI, such words could easily be con-<lb /><lb />strued as encouragement and sanction to kill Malcolm.<lb /><lb />Concerns about Farrakhan Ts role in the assassination of<lb />Malcolm X have also been fueled by negative and disparag-<lb />ing statements the Minister has made over the years. In<lb />another speech to the NOI a few years ago. Farrakhan<lb />angrily said something to the effect that if we.(NOI) dealt<lb />with Malcolm like a nation deals with a traitor whose busi-<lb />ness is it. In 1990 a number of nationalists and activists<lb />(Sonia Sanchez, Haki Madhubuti, Preston Wilcox, Dick<lb />Gregory, Jill Sofflyah Elijah, Dr. Conrad Worrill, Rick Ad-<lb />ams, Dr. Charshee McIntyre, Damu Smith and Ron<lb />Daniels) under the auspices of the National. Malcolm X<lb />Commemoration Commission, headed by oDr. James<lb />Turner, launched a nationwide campaign to proclaim May<lb />19, Malcolm Ts birthday, a National African-American Day<lb />of Commemoration. The initiative was highly successful.<lb />But Farrakhan Ts response to the campaign was to accuse<lb />the organizers of trying to oresurrect a dead man. ?<lb /><lb />Many activists and nationalists havet been ambivalent<lb />about Minister Farrakhan because they genuinely love and<lb />respect the minister and feel that for whatever his flaws,<lb />he is a gifted and anointed leader with much to offer Afri-<lb /><lb />can people in the United States and the world. His<lb /><lb />longstanding, steadfast, militant and jpeg egace de-<lb />nunciation of racism and white supremacy rightfully<lb />earned him tremendous respect among the masses of black<lb />people. It is for this reason that most of the members of the<lb />Malcolm X Commemoration Commission cited above stood<lb />with Minister Farrakhan when he undertook the difficult<lb />but essential task of rebuilding the NOI. It is also for. that<lb />reason that many of us have consistently urged the Minis-<lb />ter to take responsibility for any role he may have played<lb />in the assassination of Malcolm X and cease and desist<lb />making disparaging remarks about one of the most ad-<lb />mired leaders in the history of Africans in America.<lb /><lb />In that spirit, in January of 1995, 1 wrote a series of<lb /> Vantage Point ? articles entitled, The Assassination of<lb />Malcolm X: Time to Heal the Wounds." T This series was<lb />written in the wake of the government's plan to exploit the<lb />divisions in the black community over the assas<lb />Malcolm X by. atiaaaphing to implicate Qubila<lb />Malcolm and Dr. Shabazz Ts daughter, in a plot<lb />nate Minister Farrakhan, Rather than falling<lb /><lb />however, Minister Farrakhan stepped forward to express<lb />the view that Qubilah was not involved in any plot to take<lb />his life. The Minister mously offered to raise mon-<lb /><lb />ies to pay ves yr ae h oe defense. <lb />Commemoration<lb />| Honoring Malcolm<lb />_ X. Malcolm X was<lb />__ One of our great Af-<lb />- fican in America<lb />- leaders who was<lb />born on May 19,<lb /><lb />1925 in Omaha, Neb.<lb /><lb />Even though Malcolm is no longer physi-<lb />cally with-us his spirit still lives and his<lb />profound -ontributions to worldwide Afri-<lb />can Liberation remain significant.<lb /><lb />It was on Feb. 21, 1965 that Malcolm X -<lb /><lb />was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom<lb />in Manhattan, N.Y. by forces that were<lb />trying to stop his impact on our movement.<lb />They were not successful. He will forever<lb />remain our oShining Black Prince. ?<lb /><lb />Malcolm X is a man that should be<lb />studied carefully in our efforts to examine<lb />a critical period in our history- the 1960s.<lb />For it was during this period that Malcolm<lb />X became an internationally known and<lb />respected African in America leader, whose<lb />ideas were widely discussed and debated.<lb />It was through the Nation of Islam, un-<lb />der the leadership of the Honorable Elijah<lb />Muhammad, that Malcolm X was given an<lb />opportunity to develop his tremendous tal-<lb />ents as a teacher, researcher, orator, and<lb />organizer.<lb /><lb />Malcolm X joined the Nation of Islam<lb />while in prison in 1952. After his release in<lb />the mid-1950s, Malcolm X became a<lb />full-time minister for the Nation of Islam<lb />that became one of the most important<lb />organizations in the history of African in<lb />America, people. From his main base in<lb />Harlem, at Mosque Number 7, he launched<lb />his talents onthe world.<lb /><lb />Malcolm X was a revolutionary who<lb />presented a model of black manhood that<lb />shook the world. When Malcolm X finally<lb />left the Nation of Islam, because of internal<lb />differences, he decided to take his first trip<lb />to Mother Africa. Malcolm spent five weeks<lb />in Africa, from April 13 to May 21, 1964.<lb /><lb />This trip helped reestablish our links<lb />with the movement to reclaim oAfrica for<lb />the Africans. ? Malcolm met many of the<lb />leaders and people of Africa. He visited<lb />Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Nigeria,<lb /><lb /> Gee Moervvla, Liberia, ead. Tan-<lb /> " " " " " " " " " ~ zania, Guinea, Morocco, and Algeria.<lb />- On May 19 through-<lb />out-the world, we.<lb />will be celebrating<lb />the 75th Birthday<lb /><lb />This trip and subsequent trips abroad<lb />helped Malcolm sharpen his understanding<lb /><lb />that the worldwide system of white su-<lb /><lb /> premiacy was the number one enemy of<lb /><lb />African people throughout the world. Land<lb /><lb />has not changed. "<lb /><lb />After leaving the Nation of Islam,<lb />Malcolm began to broaden his organizing<lb /> strategies by attempting to reach out and<lb /><lb />work. with many of the more established<lb /><lb />-civil-rights organiza-<lb />tions and movement<lb />tendenciestoacom- ff<lb />mon organizational "<lb />vehicle. Malcolm be-<lb />gan building this ve-<lb />hicle through his es-<lb />tablishment of the "<lb />Organization for §<lb />Afro-American _<lb />Unity (OAAU).<lb /><lb />. Malcolm felt that "<lb />a United Front was<lb />the necessary mecha- |<lb />nism by which the<lb />political conscious-<lb />ness of African ~<lb />American people<lb />could be raised. Also, ~<lb /><lb />he felt that this .<lb />United Front would |<lb />be the common voice<lb />we needed to repre-<lb />sent the Black Lib-<lb />eration Movement in<lb />this country. Many of<lb />us are still working<lb />to build this United Front concept of orga-<lb />nizing toward our liberation in America.<lb /><lb />In the spirit of Malcolm, let us summa-<lb />rize his contributions:<lb /><lb />1. Malcolm X was a concrete example<lb />that if you discipline yourself and find a<lb />new outlook on life you can transform your<lb />behavior.<lb /><lb />2. From 1952 to 1963, Malcolm X helped<lb />the Honorable Elijah Muhammad build the<lb />Nation of Islam into a powerful force.<lb /><lb />3. During this same period, Malcolm<lb />became the spokesman for the Honorable<lb />Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.<lb />and thus, became a spokesman for the Black<lb />Nationalist Movement in one of the most<lb />important periods in our nistory "the pe-<lb />riod of the mid 1950s through the 1960s.<lb /><lb />4. In this role, Malcolm articulated many<lb /><lb />: ; ced concepts.<lb /><lb /> MALCOLM X<lb />... Praying in Mecca<lb /><lb />in this country, as well as, the Civil Rights<lb /><lb />Movement. His speech, oThe Ballot orthe |<lb />Bullet, ? still rings in our ears. His concep-<lb /> otion of the role of oHouse Negroes ? vs.<lb /><lb /> oField Negroes ? is still with us today. And<lb /><lb /> his coining | the phrase, oBy any means nec-<lb /><lb />essary ? is just one of a few of the ideas and "<lb />concepts that concretely impacted the black<lb /><lb />movement.<lb />5. -Malcolm X defined Black Nationalism<lb />in simple terminology that<lb />appealed to the black masses<lb />_ when he said, oThe political<lb />#) _ philosophy of Black Nation-<lb />= alism is that blacks should<lb />8: control the politics and poli-<lb />ticians in our own commu-<lb />nity. ... The economic phi-<lb />losophy of Black National-<lb />ism must be designed to<lb />re-educate our community to<lb />\ the importance of control-<lb />ling the economy in which<lb />we live by owning and oper-<lb />| ating the businesses. The so-<lb />. Cial philosophy of Black Na-<lb />tionalism is we must become<lb />socially mature enough to<lb />realize the responsibility on<lb />us to elevate the conditions<lb />and standards of our com-<lb />munity to a higher level. ?<lb />6. Malcolm X linked the<lb />black struggle in this coun-<lb />try with the struggle of<lb />' African people around the<lb />world.<lb /><lb />7. Malcolm helped shape black pails s<lb />pride in themselves and by so doing, he<lb />exposed, by teaching, that the greatest crime<lb />of white people was they taught us to hate<lb />ourselves. It was Malcolm Ts spirit that gen-<lb />erated the black pride, black studies, and<lb />black power phases of our movement. "<lb /><lb />So, on the one hand, Malcolm helped<lb />internationalize our struggle and on the<lb />other hand, he linked it up to the mass<lb />struggle and issues that faced our people in<lb />America. By taking this approach, Malcolm<lb />was able to provide a basis for the contin-<lb />ued historical efforts to build worldwide<lb />African unity. Yes.<lb />"For the unbelieving husband is<lb />sanctified by the wife, and the<lb />unbelieving wife is sanctified by<lb />the husband: else were your<lb />children unclean; but now are they<lb />holy." (I Corinthians 7:14) The<lb />children of all believers are justi-<lb />fied through the faith of their<lb />parents up to the time they reach.<lb />years of mental maturity. Family<lb />prayer is very desirable in the<lb />homes of the Lord's people.<lb />Children should be taught from<lb /><lb />You know that noise<lb />your heart makes "<lb />when you work out?<lb /><lb />their blessings and ask Him to "<lb />_ help them in time of need. If we "<lb />- would have our children actively<lb /> oand properly pray, we should not<lb />expect others to bring or guide<lb /><lb />them .to- ry "throne = grace".<lb />----especially in a secular setting:<lb />Daily--morning, . afternoon and<lb />night--we as parents can pray<lb />together with our children about<lb />our thankfulness, our needs and<lb /><lb />our cares. Children learn best<lb /><lb />when parents actively and prop-<lb />erly pray together with them.<lb />Should children pray in school?<lb />Of course, they should. But they<lb />do not need to have formal<lb />legislation that allows for commu-<lb />nity prayer in the classroom. In<lb />fact, it would be unfair to impose<lb />such a religious practice in a<lb />public school. Children should be<lb />encouraged to pray anywhere, any<lb />time--. before school, on the bus,<lb />in the cafeteria, the class-<lb />room,etc.--as well as in their<lb />bedrooms before sleep at home.<lb />Our lives should be a prayer. As<lb />we wake till the time we sleep at<lb />night, we should have an attitude<lb />of conscious awareness of our<lb />Heavenly Father's presence. "In<lb />everything give thanks..."<lb /><lb />(I Thessalonians 5:17,18) Prayer is<lb />the vital breath of the new<lb />creature in Christ. How often do<lb />we breath? For the past five years the event<lb /><lb />organizations and scholarships to high school seniors. I n<lb />the past three years, education has been the primary focus<lb />of the organization. Four students have received scholar-<lb />Ships on behalf of the Pastors Basketball Association. Past<lb />scholarship recipients have been Jennifer Barrett (NC. State<lb />Univ.), and Ju Torri Harvey (East Carolina Univ.). This<lb />years recipients were Quenesha McNair, who w ill be<lb />attending the Univ. of Maryland and Corey Haynes who<lb />will be attending NC. A & T Univ. Their were three games<lb />this year. The first game featured various associate<lb />ministers, the second game featured the ladies with four of<lb />the pastors wives participating. The highlight of the evening<lb />was the pastors game which featured | 8 of the areas finest<lb />pastors. The game also featured a half-time shoot out for<lb />cash in which two spectators won cash prizes for hitting a<lb />lay up, a free throw, and a three pointer. Special guest this<lb />year was Ms. Christine E. Johnson, mother of former NBA<lb />star "Magic Johnson". Ms. Johnson thrilled the crowd of<lb />400 spectators as she discussed the need for strong T families<lb />_ and the value of a good education. Steve Hamilton,<lb />_ formerly of the Washington Redskins was also on hand to<lb />lend his support to the event. Willie Joyner Jr,, the founder<lb />of the organization says the event has grown so much, that<lb />_ they plan to change venues next year. His supporters say 34 ju-<lb /><lb />dicial reviews over 19 years have<lb />still not lead to full examination of<lb /><lb /> crime scéne witnesses, or the fact<lb /><lb />that the 22-caliber pistol presented<lb />at the trial wasn Tt the weapon that<lb />killed victim Bobby Lambert. The<lb />judicial reviews were not so much<lb />related to claims of innocence as<lb />they were challenging laws, rulings<lb />and procedural matters, they added.<lb /><lb />Minister Robert Muhammad,<lb />Southwest Regional Minister of the<lb />Nation of Islam and one of Mr.<lb />Graham Ts spiritual advisors, said,<lb /> oOn May 22, I will begin a fast that<lb />will last until the scheduled execu-<lb />tion date. I am asking for the prayer<lb />warriors to start praying, the activ-<lb />ists to get active and the marchers<lb />to start marching. The courts have<lb />spoken, but now the people must<lb />be heard. ?<lb /><lb />Mumia Abu-Jamal, from his cell<lb />on death row in Pennsylvania, is-<lb />sued a statement. oAt the tender age<lb />of 17 a youth named Gary Graham<lb />was faced with a terrifying reality.<lb />The state of Texas and Harris<lb />County district attorney picked him<lb />as another expendable Black life<lb /><lb />From kings<lb /><lb />judge Michael A.<lb /><lb />neve<lb /><lb />ta<lb /><lb />form: a Black youth to feed to'the<lb />death machine. In a case of mur-<lb />der, where neither fingerprints nor<lb />ballistics nor any credible evidence<lb />points to any notion of guilt, Gary<lb />Graham faces legal murder, ? said<lb />Mr. Abu-Jamal, whose supporters<lb />say he is also be denied a fair trial.<lb />he was convicted of the 1980s mur-<lb />der of a Philadelphia police officer,<lb />but several witnesses in the case<lb />have recanted testimony. They say<lb />police coerced them into implicat-<lb />ing Mr. Abu-Jamal.<lb /><lb /> oOver half his life spent in hell-<lb />ish and harsh Texas death cell, Gary<lb />Graham has grown into the man<lb />known as Shaka Sankofa, a young<lb />man who is deeply conscious of his<lb />individual and collective self of his<lb />place in history.<lb /><lb />If there is a crime for which<lb />Bloody Texas seeks his death it<lb />is this: it is a crime in a racist na-<lb />tion for a Black youth to be con-<lb /><lb />_ scious and thinking in political<lb />and collective terms. For Sankofa<lb />innocence is not enough. The<lb />state and federal judiciary have,<lb />it is true, provided oceans of pro-<lb />cess, but not an iota of justice. His<lb /><lb />and queens<lb /><lb />not received a fair trial<lb /><lb />life, and the life of thousands of<lb />young men and women like him<lb />were expandable at birth not just<lb />at trial. Why should it be other-<lb />wise before the lily white and<lb />wealthy appeals courts? ? asked<lb />Mr. Abu-Jamal.<lb /><lb /> oThe Sankofa case presents a<lb />challenge to all. of us, not just<lb />those of us who steadfastly op-<lb />pose the death penalty, but for<lb />those who say we believe in fun-<lb />damental fairness and basic hu-<lb />man rights. Under the terms of in-<lb />ternational human rights pacts (io<lb />which the United States is a party)<lb />the execution of a person who is<lb />a juvenile when the alleged crime<lb />occurred is a violation of interna-<lb />tional law. But the American<lb />empire sneers at international<lb />law. It is necessary to mobilize<lb />unsparing protests and stiff resis-<lb />tance to death machine to bring<lb />about what should be our obvious<lb />goal: the life and freedom of<lb />Shaka Sankofa, ? said Mr. Jamal.<lb /><lb />Prosecutors maintain Mr. Gra-<lb />ham is guilty and has been given<lb />ample chance to appeal the death<lb />sentence.<lb /><lb />nd activists... 8<lb /><lb />the history<lb /><lb />continues.<lb /><lb />F3<lb /><lb />The Minority Voice N<lb /><lb />e?,?<lb /><lb />With Microsoft® Encarta® Africana 2000<lb />multimedia encyclopedia, you can share with<lb /><lb />_ your children the experience of 4 million years<lb />of African and African American culture. It was appalling that<lb />most of the board members<lb />seemed uninterested in such an<lb />unprecedented curriculum. It's a<lb />shame that. those members have<lb />not implemented such a curricu-<lb />lum to reflect the rich cultural<lb /><lb />diversity in Pitt.<lb /><lb />Michael Dixon, the black vice-<lb />chairman and Sidney Scott, the<lb />white chairman, should be<lb />ashamed of themselves for .not<lb />understanding the value and<lb />strength of diversity, given such<lb />diverse student populations in this<lb />county of over 126,000 people.<lb />Board member Ephraigm Smith, a<lb />candidate for Pitt County<lb />Commissioner (District B). was<lb />silent as well. If white members,<lb />traditional obstructionists and<lb /><lb />procrastinators, don't wish to<lb /><lb />move, minority members should<lb />take the initiative to do what's<lb />right.<lb /><lb />School board members didn't<lb />have the guts and conscience to<lb />express an opinion about multi-<lb />cultural education. Whom do<lb />they represent? Concerned citi-<lb />zens hungry for change are tired<lb />of empty suits who have personal,<lb />special interests to advance.<lb /><lb />We should refuse to reelect any<lb />board member who lacks the<lb />vision to promote a more just and<lb />humane society. This vision must<lb />be shaped and nurtured within<lb />both the family and school sys-<lb />tem. It's no wonder that there are<lb />very few black teachers and<lb />administrators within Pitt County<lb />Schools.<lb /><lb />I'm surprise that the Daily<lb />Reflector said nothing about the<lb />informed speakers who addressed<lb />multiculturalism and its impor-<lb />tance to the Pitt County School<lb />System. This was definitely<lb />newsworthy.<lb /><lb />The Winston-Salem, Forsyth<lb />County School System has a<lb />progressive, respectable K-12<lb />multicultural education curricu-<lb />lum.
