Another driver was sent<lb />to pick up the caller, who would<lb />take the passenger to the: police<lb />station with Grullon to meet them<lb />there. But the suspect, Luis Soto,<lb />caught wind of the scheme when<lb />he saw Grullon Ts car driving<lb />alongside him.<lb /><lb />Soto leaped from the car<lb />with Grullon in hot pursuit.<lb />When Grullon got to withing a<lb />few feet, Soto shot him. First of all, to refuse to<lb />for ust one day and then go back to doing business as usual the very next<lb /> day will do nothing to improve the economic status of black people. As for<lb />_ ghowing the establishment how much we spend and how great a role we play<lb />a in their economy, they already know how much we spend, what we spend it on,<lb />i lly every other aspect of our buying habits, Check out Ken Smikle Ts<lb />. Target Market News, or just go to your local library and do some research on<lb />A gonsumption spending by black people.<lb />~ * Qur buying habits as well as our economic impact on business are well<lb />documented. Believe me "they already know.<lb />_. | So what will oshowing them ? do for U.S.? I submit, very little or<lb />- dbsolutely fiothing. I am for withdrawing our money as much as possible<lb />from as many non-black owned businesses as possible, but I am also for<lb />ing something that will have a positive impact on black businesses and<lb />tilack consumers. If we concentrate merely on hurting someone else or<lb /><lb />Proving a point for a day, such as Gas Out Day last year (Look at gas prices<lb />now and you can see how much impact we had on that industry) we will<lb />not achieve the goal of our protest: economic empowerment.<lb /><lb />. We must incorporate positive action in our strategies of protest and<lb />Hoycotts so that our people benefit from our actions. How many black<lb />people are now buying Texaco gas? How many of us are eating at<lb />Denny T s? How many of us are renting cars from Avis? How many blacks<lb />are collecting bottle caps for Coca-Cola? How many of you have turned<lb /><lb />. io your 10% discount coupons at Comp USA?<lb /><lb />* Another example is the flag in South Carolina. If it came down<lb />tomorrow, what would black people gain economically? Back to business<lb />as usual with black people getting little or nothing from the tourism<lb />industry in South Carolina.<lb /><lb />That kind of strategy makes no economic sense. Or maybe it does, to<lb />those black people who get paid off to say oEverything is fine now, you<lb />can come back to South Carolina and spend your money, black people. ?<lb /><lb />The result of our being angry and protesting should be economic<lb />empowerment, collective economic empowerment, not a few individuals<lb />getting paid, a few nice commercials on television, or a new ohired hand ?<lb />with a black face for showcasing purposes only. The result of our being<lb />mad at someone should result in our making positive moves toward<lb />getting true freedom, both psychological and economic.<lb /><lb />* Demonstrations of our anger alone will not do that. Only positive<lb />action toward one another will get us there. Going back to the status quo<lb />after the fight is over does nothing for black people economically. Protests<lb />af this kind must go on for much longer than one day, and they must not<lb />therely concentrate on causing a little uneasiness for someone else. We<lb />cannot and must not allow our anger to be the only driving force. It Ts not<lb />about othem; ? it Ts about us.<lb /><lb />: Please think about this and know that we must not only make a point<lb /><lb />. Hy withholding our money on one day, we must also look at ways to enrich<lb />ourselves as a result of our actions. Those stores we do not shop at on May<lb />20 will be there the next day and will probably Le just as much or more<lb />after we oprove our point. T<lb /><lb />-* - Now, what is the answer? What shall we do? Well, here is one answer. How<lb />about a Black Dollar Day? Let Ts call for black people on May 20 to take one<lb />of those dollars they do not spend and start a black fund in their city. Thereafter,<lb />an the 20th of every month, let Ts continue to do that. One dollar, each month,<lb />from every black person who cares to participate, deposited in a black financial<lb />institution, if possible. Now that Ts what I call proving a point. That Ts what I call<lb />demonstrating black economic impact. Just think what can be done across this<lb />nation in our various cities if we would do that. Withholding our dollars from<lb />spmeone else and using those same dollars to empower oursel ves "to support<lb />eurselves. What a concept!<lb /><lb />* I don Tt know how large your city is; so I will use mine as an example.<lb />Cincinnati has over 100,000 black citizens. If just half of us participated<lb />in Black Dollar Day, we could invest in new businesses and community<lb />frojects, build and support our own institutions, and help those among us<lb />who are less fortunate or those who run into difficulties from time to time.<lb />Who knows? You may be the next one to need help. Isn Tt a $1.00 per<lb />month investment worth it?<lb /><lb />* Get your Black Dollar Day started now. I have already called for one<lb />in our city. You have until May 20 to save your first dollar.<lb /><lb />*<lb /><lb />~ While I will support this effort, I must offer some<lb /><lb />_ if you were black.<lb /><lb /> oMost black folk, other than: the<lb /><lb /> oones who lived there, avoided both "<lb />cities after dark. It was kind of an ?<lb /><lb />unwritten law that you were going<lb />to be stopped and harassed by law<lb />enforcement in either place if you<lb />were black and it was after dark or<lb />if you were black and happened to<lb />be driving an expensive car.<lb /><lb />Hold your breath. -<lb /><lb />The city of Signal Hill has just<lb />elected a black man as the mayor of<lb />that city. His name is Edward H. J.<lb />Wilson. In addition to being a certi-<lb />fied public accountant. He is also a<lb />manager for the Nissan Motor Cor-<lb /><lb />A graduate of the University of<lb />Southern California, oEd ? Wilson<lb />has served in at least 15 different<lb />major roles in both Southern Cali-<lb />fornia government and policy-mak-<lb /><lb />ing groups. Put a pin in all of that. .<lb /><lb />A couple of years ago, after he<lb />was ousted as president of the<lb />Compton Branch of the NAACP,<lb />some say unfairly, well-known<lb />Compton accountant Royce Esters<lb />decided to form a new Civil Rights<lb />group. It is called the National As-<lb />sociation for equal justice in Ameri-<lb /><lb />URBAN<lb /><lb />Dr. Manning<lb />Marable, profes-<lb />sor of history and director of the<lb />Institute of African American Stud-<lb />ies at Columbia University, offers a<lb />thoughtful analysis of race and<lb />ethnicity in the Feb. 25 Chronicle<lb />of Higher Education. Though not<lb />unique, Dr. Marable Ts views pro-<lb />vide a significantly different frame-<lb />work for understanding the com-<lb />plexities of race and ethnicity. His<lb />is a more comprehensive approach<lb />than that of the anti-identity poli-<lb />tics school, which appears to have<lb />singular access to both the conser-<lb />vative and liberal public media.<lb /><lb />Dr. Marable begins by pointing<lb />out that while a great deal of schol-<lb />arly attention has gone into study-<lb />ing race and ethnicity, too often the<lb />discussion has been mired in old<lb />debates and definitions. He asserts<lb />that to understand the changes<lb />around us, we need a new and criti-<lb />cal study of the increasingly com-<lb />plicated relationship between race<lb />and ethnicity.<lb /><lb />Part of today Ts confusion stems<lb />from the fact that the concepts of<lb />race and ethnicity have evolved very<lb />differently. Race is a dynamic so-<lb />cial construct that has its roots in<lb /><lb />hall<lb /><lb />ia a<lb /><lb />Only through hard work dedication<lb />and education will one gain the tools<lb />| needed to succeed. |<lb />| Remember Read Your Black History<lb /><lb />Read the "M" Voice Newspaper<lb /><lb />executing people when it has been<lb />proved that trial evidence or case<lb /><lb />Oral arguments<lb />are expected to<lb />begin this month<lb /> in imprisoned journalist and police<lb /><lb />tion.<lb /><lb />was wrong or tainted post-convic-:<lb /><lb />«abuse activist Mumia Abu-Jamal Ts<lb /><lb />fight for a stayed execution and a<lb />{new trial. Mayor Ed<lb /> Wilson of the city. of Signal Hill<lb /><lb />will be the guest of honor.<lb /><lb />There is a peculiar irony here. Now he is the mayor of<lb />the city. You cannot deny that is<lb />progress, ? Esters charged.<lb /><lb />As an aside, Esters and other<lb />member of NAEJA are urging<lb /><lb />PERSPECTIVE<lb /><lb />the transatlantic slave trade, the<lb />establishment of plantation econo-<lb />mies based on enslaved labor, and<lb />the ideological justification for the<lb />vast extermination of millions of<lb />indigenous Americans. White<lb />Americans have thought of them-<lb />selves in terms of racial categories<lb />for several centuries.<lb /><lb />By contrast, ethnicity is a rela-<lb />tively recent concept. There are no<lb />references to ethnicity, per se, in<lb />the social science literature of the<lb />19th and early 20th centuries.<lb />Ethnicity surfaced in the writings<lb />of sociologists during the Great<lb />Depression, as a means to describe<lb />the diverse immigrant population<lb />that came largely from Southern<lb />and Eastern Europe. Later, ethnicity<lb />was used to describe the develop-<lb /><lb />ment of modern European national-<lb /><lb />ism and the conflicts developing<lb />among various communities defined<lb />by their cultural and social tradi-<lb />tions.<lb /><lb />_ Because of the hegemony of race<lb />and racism in the social develop-<lb />ment of the United States, Euro-<lb />pean immigrants who arrivéd here<lb />quickly learned that the key to their<lb />advancement and power was to<lb /><lb />claim the status of being white. In<lb /><lb />other words, during the 19th cen-<lb />tury, race was much more powerful<lb />than what we might today call<lb />ethnicity in determining the lives of<lb />most new immigrants.<lb /><lb />Given the history and complexi-<lb />ties, there is small wonder that there<lb />are currently major academic dis-<lb /><lb />agreements over the meanings and .<lb /><lb />materiality of both race and<lb />ethnicity. For example, should race<lb />be subsumed under ethnicity as a<lb />subcategory? Or is race an excep-<lb />tional social category in its own<lb />right, because of its peculiar his-<lb />torical development, discourses,<lb />relations with culture, etc., which<lb />set it apart form ethnicity? To what<lb /><lb />Judge Yohn grant the petition, an<lb />evidentiary hearing would be next.<lb />If Yohn denies the petition, another<lb />death warrant would be signed<lb />(though Abu Jamal would have two<lb />more appeals, to the Federal Ap-<lb />peals Court and the U.S. Supreme<lb />Court). Because federal courts<lb />rarely overturn state convictions,<lb />this case must be watched to make<lb />sure the federal courts don Tt give<lb />too. narrow an interpretation of<lb />Mumia Ts claims. Clearly, his claims<lb />have merit.<lb /><lb />The Mumia case, as did the<lb />Geronimo ji Jaga case, exposes the<lb />flaw in the-American judicial sys-<lb />tem when convictions come about<lb />as a result of a railroad case where<lb /><lb /> chremmnetanpe ond authority (police)<lb /><lb />eainhin te aside<lb /><lb />Hill was a lost cause. The notion of<lb /><lb />ment in that city was at best, a pipe<lb /><lb />dream. ?<lb /><lb />He continued, oIn a way it is<lb />kind of like the pride we felt when<lb />Douglas Dollarhide, the first black<lb />mayor of Compton as elected back<lb /><lb />in the 1960s. His father was a career<lb /><lb />military man. He graduated from<lb /><lb />high school in Holland and came<lb />back to the US to attend college.<lb /><lb />His accomplishments make him<lb />sound like a candidate for oWho's<lb />Who in America. ? He is a member<lb />of the Board of Governors for Long<lb />Beach City College. He is a mem-<lb />ber of both the American Institute<lb />of Certified Public Accountants and<lb />the California Society of Certified<lb />Public Accountants.<lb /><lb />Wilson also served as chief fi-<lb />nancial officer for Family Savings<lb />Bank as well as s the Internal Au-<lb />dits manager for the California<lb />Credit Union.<lb /><lb />extent, if at all, should race be mea-<lb />sured by biological, genetic, or cul-<lb />tural differences among groups?<lb />Can ethnic minority groups who<lb />are at least partly defined by their<lb />legal racial categories, such as Af-<lb />rican Americans, be guilty of orac-<lb />ism ? themselves?<lb /><lb />Many different theoretical ap-<lb />proaches have been proposed to ad-<lb />dress such questions. At one end of<lb />the ideological spectrum are the ra-<lb />cial-ethnic theorists, the<lb /><lb />. multiculturalists, who insist that<lb /><lb />racialized ethnic groups should be<lb />studied together. This group main-<lb />tains that racialized minorities are<lb />fundamentally different from other<lb />ethnic groups because they share a<lb />common history of oppression. Af-<lb />rican Americans cu 1¢ to this his-<lb />tory involuntarily in chains. Ameri-<lb />can Indians were subjected to a de-<lb />liberate policy of genocidal exter-<lb />mination.<lb /><lb />A common history of residential<lb />segregation, economic subordination<lb />and political disenfranchisement has<lb />created the basis for a comprehensive<lb />approach to the study of such ethnic<lb />minority groups.<lb /><lb />Social scientists such as Robert<lb />Allen and Robert Blauner provide a<lb />variant of that argument, using po-<lb />litical economy to understand race,<lb />asserting that racializéd minorities<lb />share not only uniquely different<lb />social histories from white people,<lb /><lb /> but also that their existence is strik-<lb /><lb />ingly similar to that of a colonized<lb />nation.<lb /><lb />At the opposite end of the spec-<lb />trum are the cultural universalists,<lb />who, for divergent reasons, attack<lb />or dismiss all kinds of ethnic stud-<lb />ies that factor in race. They main-<lb />tain that ethnic identity is not bio-<lb />logically-based, but rather a prod-<lb />uct of social forces and voluntary<lb />choices. Some, such as Nathan<lb />Glazer and Patrick Moynihan<lb /><lb />rying Out sentences on tainted tri-<lb />als. The reversal of so-called jus-<lb />tice in America is still a gray area<lb />because rarely will a criminal jus-<lb />tice system self-incriminate its so-<lb />called ofair ? process. On the other<lb />side of that coin you have people<lb />trying to expose the flaws in this<lb />system being blocked by lack of<lb />access to court systems and people<lb /><lb />that will heartheircases. The Mumia .<lb /><lb />case is just one of thousands of<lb />cases where persons were convicted<lb />and sentenced because the system<lb />and other processes, failed them. I<lb />get dozens of letters a, week from<lb />prisoners seeking to get their cases<lb /><lb />out in the open because they were<lb /><lb />somehow, legitimately compro-<lb />mised by the judicial process. This school vilifies<lb />those who emphasize the<lb />discontinuities and conflicts among<lb />various racial and ethnic groups.<lb /><lb /> oEthnicity ? is an oinvention, ?<lb />nothing more; all Americans, re- |<lb />gardless of their respective racial or<lb />ethnic identities, share far more with<lb />each other "culturally, socially and<lb />politically "than they do not share.<lb /><lb />Finally, there are the social theo-<lb />rists of race and ethnicity, who,<lb />frankly, do put forward essential-<lb />ists and identity-bound models of<lb />cultural difference. The most influ-<lb />ential school of thought, presently<lb />expressed, in many black studies<lb />programs, is afrocentricity. It is a<lb />concept initially developed by<lb />Molefi Asante, former chair of black<lb />studies at Temple University, and<lb />bases itself on an oppositional<lb />stance toward Eurocentrism, the<lb />cultural ideology and supremacy<lb />practices of the white West, and on<lb />a belief in the endearing meaning of<lb />race and ethnicity.<lb /><lb />It is not surprising that a na-<lb />tional conversation around issues<lb />of race and social diversity such as<lb />the 1997-98 President Ts Race Ini-<lb />tiative is so difficult to carry out.<lb />The discourse about race continues<lb />to be politically charged, both in<lb />public policy and on the nation Ts<lb />college campuses, and people gen-<lb />erally talk past each other "pre-<lb />cisely because there is no consen-<lb />sus in abstract theory or in the real<lb />world on what is meant by race and<lb />ethnicity. .<lb /><lb />BETWEEN THE Linc iii iiiimileaciMieriiaiA nies exbne- 05200 ma enim ace anG<lb /> We Must Stand On Alert for the Evidentiary Hearing of Abu-Jamal<lb /><lb />puta person to death "an act which<lb />is irreversible "before it will con-<lb />sider admitting the system failed<lb />and having to reverse its error, Why?<lb />Because if it really acknowledged<lb />how frequently it does happen (as<lb />we Tre.finding out in Los Angeles<lb />with its police scandal), then the<lb />criminal justice system will break<lb />down,<lb /><lb />The Mumia case is one of<lb />America Ts biggest tests to see ifitis<lb />as aggressive in correcting criminal<lb />injustice by the courts as it has been<lb />in applying criminal justice in the<lb /><lb />life hang in the balance, the cred-<lb />ibility of a whole judicial system<lb />hangs in the balance, Can we afford<lb />not to be on onational alert ? in this<lb />effort to save Mumia? It is evident that the reason<lb />He did not was that He knew they<lb />were not in harmony with the<lb />written Word of God which they<lb />claimed to teach. In Johr 5:46,47<lb />Jesus stated flatly that the relig-<lb />ious authorities did not believe the<lb />writings or Moses. On another<lb />occasion He addressed the scribes<lb />and Pharisees thus: "Ye hypo-<lb />crites, well did Isaiah prophesy or<lb />you, saying, This people draweth<lb />nigh unto me with their mouth,<lb />and honoreth me with their lips,<lb />but their hearts are far from me.<lb />But in vain they do worship me,<lb />teaching for doctrines the com-<lb />mandments of men."<lb /><lb />(Matthew 15:7-9)<lb /><lb />Jesus went on to point out the<lb />dire consequences which could<lb />result from a continued course or<lb />reliance upon oral tradition: "Thus<lb />have ye made the commandment<lb />of God of none effect by your<lb />tradition." It you do not cast<lb />down wicked imaginations that<lb />enter your mind. and bring them<lb />into captivity and obedience of<lb />the Lord Jesus Christ, they will<lb />eventually work their way into<lb />your spirit.<lb /><lb />James 1:15 says that when lust<lb />(evil desire) has conceived, it<lb />bringeth forth sin, and sin when it<lb />is finished bringeth forth death<lb /><lb />As we look at the condition of the |<lb />world and as we read and study<lb /><lb />that we are rapidly approaching<lb />the end of another era. The Word<lb />of God is being fulfilled right<lb />before our very eyes.<lb /><lb />One day as | was meditating upon<lb />the above scripture, the Lord gave<lb />me a startling revelation. If you<lb />were to do a study' on the various<lb />destructions of mankind you<lb />~ would note that only a handful of<lb />people escaped each time. When<lb />God sent warning to Abraham<lb />that He was going to destroy<lb />Sodom and Gomorrah, and when<lb /><lb />What it all boils down to is the<lb />people turned mentally violent.<lb /><lb />Everything breeds after its own<lb />kind. Look at what is happening<lb />in the Roman Catholic church and<lb />compare it with denominations.<lb />Isn't the same thing going on<lb />today? Don't get me wrong<lb />Everybody that belongs to a<lb />denomination is not going to hell.<lb />I believe the Lord has some real<lb />born again believers in denomina-<lb />tional churches that are really sold<lb />out to Him and love Him.<lb /><lb />In conclusion, choose ye this day<lb />whom ye shall Serve. Will it be<lb />God or Baal? It is time to become<lb />steadfast, unmovable and abound<lb />in the work of the Lord.<lb /><lb />By Henry Williams<lb /><lb />"Put one against the<lb />other and that will impede their<lb />progress as a group of people."<lb />If one steps forward that one is<lb />criticized, stigmatized and ostra-<lb />cized. Since you are so gifted<lb />and have such a firm grasp of the<lb />English Language, then why<lb />don't you step forward? Why<lb />don't you step-up to the plate?<lb />The saying that "We are our own<lb /><lb />~ "<lb /><lb />worst enemy" carries a lot of<lb />weight with us as a people. Who<lb />says that I have to use foot long<lb />words to be a candidate? Who<lb /><lb />HOME EVERYDAY. (SMILE) STAFF PHOTO<lb /><lb />Self Destruction<lb /><lb />says that I have to raffle off a lot<lb />of empty promises to be a<lb />candidate? Who says | have to<lb />be from a well-known elitist<lb />group to be a candidate? We as<lb />a people are making these things<lb />mandatory in order to run for<lb />any office. The candidates with<lb />the deep pockets have made the<lb />rules, and as a people have<lb />sanctioned them.<lb /><lb />"The more things<lb />change, the more they remain<lb />the same." We are content to<lb />live in another's shadow. We are<lb />content to close our eyes to<lb />injustices and pretend that we<lb /><lb />are wallowing in progress. It is<lb />time that we open our eyes and<lb />face reality. It is time we<lb />combine forces and work for the<lb />good of all people, not just a<lb />selected handful. Until we do<lb /><lb />this, we may as well close our.<lb /><lb />eyes and keep them closed<lb />because we are just pretending<lb />to be alive - We are actually<lb />Dead.<lb /><lb />A sincere "Thank You"<lb />to those of you who voted for me<lb />to be your State Senator. An uplifting message of<lb />hope. This Too Will Pass transports us to Pitt<lb />County and Greene County, North Carolina. We<lb />visit the Green and Vines families in this<lb />semi-autobiographical drama. These poor, south-<lb />ern, black folks speak in dialect, "You mo T<lb />stubborn than a white mouth mule" and in<lb />standard English as reflected by the settings in<lb />this choreopoem. The characters will make you<lb />laugh, their tragic circumstances will make you<lb />cry, and their good ole' foot stomping spirituality<lb />will make your spirit fly.<lb /><lb />The story is told through poetry and prose as the<lb />characters reflect on their lives and interact with<lb />each other. It takes a special kind of family to<lb />live with dignity and honor and to keep their<lb />faith when life's circumstances only seem to<lb />change for the worst The story unfolds by taking<lb />the reader back and forth through the years from<lb />the 1920's to present, with scenes depicting the<lb />affects from the depression, alcohol abuse, war,<lb />and abandonment.<lb /><lb />In the present day, the family reflects on how<lb />these issues affected not only their family, but<lb />impacted society as a whole. Through war,<lb />premature death, alcoholism, and all of society's<lb />ills, the family learned that the one unchanging<lb />truth in changing times was their faith. Leigh, the<lb />granddaughter, is the keeper of the family's<lb /><lb />Stories. Leigh passes on the family message that<lb /><lb />no matter what you go, through, this too will<lb /><lb />| pass.<lb /><lb />The play opens with Agnes singing, "Lord, don't<lb />move that mountain, just give me the strength to<lb />climb/Lord, don't take away my stumbling block,<lb />but lead me all around." The opening lines are a<lb />pantoum that reflects on history. Agnes laments<lb />"You think you been through so much, try being<lb />what they call an unskilled black woman. I been<lb />taking in laundry all my life and now | ain't even<lb />good enough to do that. When I was born/the<lb />flappers danced/jazz music played/next came the<lb />new deal..." Patterson even tackles body image<lb />as reflected in this tanka when Jean shares what<lb />she remembers most about her mother "her<lb />hips/gracefully swaying/baby or basket propped<lb />on/pendulum swinging skirts that fly up in the<lb />wind/as the men watch and wonder."<lb />Commenting on abandoning his family,<lb />Theodore muses "I dream/I lie/I leave/lost hope/I<lb />cannot cope/their always growing needs." Other<lb />poetry styles include the villanelle, rondelle, free<lb />verse, and the sestina. Patterson pulls off all the<lb />styles with equal aplomb.<lb /><lb />Old Negro spirituals, jazz' blues, and urban<lb />contemporary music are all referenced in this<lb />timely piece. The musical score was written by<lb />Anthony Daniels. Daniels is Patterson's cousin<lb />and works with Darryl Simmons having worked<lb />with Elton John, Kleopatra, and many others.<lb />The play ends with a song featuring this chorus<lb />"This too ,will pass/everything will be<lb />okay/Troubles won't last/tomorrow's a new<lb />day/Hold your head up high/look to the<lb />Sky/you'll know why/this too will pass. These<lb />lyrics hold the secret to the beliefs of the<lb />characters and inspire the reader to keep their<lb />head up. }<lb /><lb />This Too Will Pass is slated for punication May<lb />15, 2000.
