<lb />Serving Eastern North Carolina Since 1981<lb /><lb />Article from Tri-State Defender<lb />March 25-29, 2000<lb />By Larry Reeves<lb /><lb />The Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. has<lb />made it one of his priorities. So<lb />has the Rev. Al Sharpton follow-<lb />ing the excessive shooting in New<lb />York of Amadou Diallo. Even<lb />Johnny Cochran has joined the<lb />circle of civil rights activists<lb />pledging legal action against po-<lb />lice for racial profiling. Jackson<lb /><lb />and the others contend - it Ts a<lb /><lb />national crisis, and charge Black<lb />and Latino youths are the most<lb />susceptible.<lb /><lb />While several prominent police<lb />organizations nationally refute the<lb />claims, there are some cops who<lb />prefers the opposite. oRacial<lb />profiling is a reality, ? an under-<lb />cover cop in Atlanta told the<lb />Tri-State Defender.<lb /><lb /> oIt not only occurs in Atlanta,<lb />but in almost every city in<lb />America, ? paid the policeman<lb />who asked us not to use his name.<lb />But, TSD discovered. Most<lb /><lb />profiling isn Tt random. oA lot<lb />depends on what a_ potential<lb />Suspect is wearing. ? In other<lb />words, this long-time Atlanta<lb />policeman strongly suggests that<lb />Suspects, especially Blacks and<lb />Latinos, are selected on the basis<lb />on their dress.<lb /><lb />An old axiom is that, oClothes<lb />make the man. ? Obviously the<lb />new axiom is that, oClothes<lb />makes the suspect. ? In an effort<lb />to substantiate the officer Ts claim,<lb />TSD traveled to five other south-<lb />ern cities including Memphis to<lb />see if other officers agreed. Let us<lb />say a sincere prayer that he gets it.<lb /><lb />A PBS program, oDebate; ?<lb />asked, oIs racism a mental illness? ? The follow-<lb />ing is an edited version of the views of Dr. Alvin<lb />Poussaint, clinical professor, psychiatry, Harvard<lb />Medical School; Jeffrey Schaler, psychologist/<lb />professor, School of Public Affairs, American T<lb />University; Ben Toledano, attorney, New Or-<lb />leans; and Ron Liefer, MD, psychiatrist and<lb />author, which appeared i in the January/February<lb />issue of Crisis magazine.<lb /><lb />Dr. Alvin Poussaint: My position is that ex- .<lb /><lb />treme racism is a mental illness becausegt repre-<lb /><lb />sents a delusional disorder. Anyone who feels .<lb /><lb />that all blacks or all Jews are responsible for all<lb />the problems in the world and that they have to<lb />be exterminated to correct it, this represents a<lb />delusion which fits into the category of the<lb />psychiatric nomenclature for a delusional disor-<lb /><lb />.der. And, I think it Ts treatable. ...<lb /><lb />« oExtreme racism is not just false belief. These<lb />people reach the point that they are very delusional<lb />about it. Racism does have kind of ascale. There are<lb />gradations of racism «.. F think that someone who<lb />moves on their delusion, which basically is a para-<lb /><lb />'] noid delusion, that person has gone beyond any-<lb /><lb />thing ordinary. That person fits the criteria for<lb />delusional disorder, persecutory type.<lb /><lb />These people who get into a genocidal mode<lb />based on their delusions are mentally disturbed<lb />and are probably treatable if we took a construc-<lb />tive view and didn Tt imply that somehow, this is<lb />Just hatred and there Ts nothing we can do about<lb />it. I think we can educate with mild forms of<lb />racism. I think for people who reach the extreme<lb />stage, we should see that as a mental disturbance<lb />and try to do something about it and get those<lb />people some help to prevent catastrophes.<lb /><lb />Some argue that we are absolving people. ...<lb /><lb />when we say they have a mental health problem,<lb />but that Ts not absolving them. The disturbance<lb />takes all kinds of shapes. There Ts a public health<lb />approach which should be major because it Ts a<lb />public health problem. And then, there could be<lb />the individual treatment approach. Really acute<lb />people..<lb />and need some help and clarity. They're out of<lb />control. It Ts not just a moral thing.<lb /><lb />When I say oextreme racists, ? I Tm looking at<lb />those people who are far gone, who are ready to<lb />go out and kill, who represent a danger to others.<lb /><lb />And this is where yoy draw the line. I think we<lb /><lb />. in some way, they need to be contained "<lb /><lb />are offering something to these people who are<lb />extreme racists who might say, oMaybe I have a<lb />problem. There Ts something I can do about it. ?<lb /><lb />' Attorney Ben Toledano: The term, oextreme<lb />racism, ? is a problem for me because I didn Tt<lb />know it had been divided into categories or<lb />Classes, minor racism, moderate racism, extreme<lb />racism.<lb /><lb /> My experiences in the field of being on the<lb />streets, in the neighborhoods around just regular<lb />people who are trying to deal with political, day-<lb />to-day problems. And I Tll tell you this. As long<lb />as this racism continues, in my opinion, we Tre<lb />not going to solve real problems. Everybody is<lb />so busy pinning labels on people today, it Ts<lb />become really an industry of sorts. We don Tt get<lb />a chance to deal with how to actually solve it.<lb /><lb />If we were to follow Dr. Poussaint Ts sugges-<lb />tion of treating everybody that doesn Tt like blacks<lb />or doesn Tt like Jews or doesn Tt like Catholics,<lb />then tne bigots will have a field day, because it Ts<lb />néver going to be possible for psychiatrists to<lb /><lb /> oput: everybody woe got a Unehetio on the<lb /><lb />couch.<lb /><lb />Education isa big. alternative. Teaching T<lb /><lb />people what Ts wrong about racism, the Judeo-<lb />Christian principles of how to treat other human<lb />beings is a hell of a lot more productive and a lot<lb />heakhier than putting labels about something<lb />being a mental illness. I think it Ts a moral ques-<lb />tion, not a medical question. Wanting to murder<lb />people and wipe out people, genocide, for ex-<lb />ample, is a totally different question from preju-<lb /><lb />dice. We have this giant wall which separates us,<lb /><lb />but much worse, which we call racism.<lb /><lb />And, we Tre doing very little about it. I Tve<lb />seen the failure of politics to solve this problem.<lb />I don Tt think the politicians can do it. I don Tt<lb />think the doctors can doit. ... Itcan only be done,<lb />and this is very much speculation, by religious<lb />leaders, spiritually.<lb /><lb />Professor Jeffrey Schaler: oRacism is no more<lb />a mental illness than homosexuality or mastur-<lb />bation. And this is why racism, and even mental<lb />illnesses are not listed in standard textbooks on<lb />pathology, because they don Tt meet the criteria<lb />for disease classification. ? This seems to me<lb /><lb />raciSts with mental illness. Racism is a moral<lb /><lb />-and ethical question, but if some people have<lb />their way in clageifying racism as an illness;<lb /><lb />sone kind of political ploy to classify people as |<lb /><lb />URBAN PERSPECTIVE A ee<lb />Racism Is Racism by Any Name<lb /><lb />you Tre exculpating people for the evil acts they<lb />commit.<lb /><lb />It seems to me that we all abhor racism and<lb />we Tre differing in terms of what we might do<lb />about it. I think your position implementing<lb />formal social control, psychiatry, make sense in<lb />that you Tre angry at people who are racists.<lb />However, I think you Tre unbelievably naive in<lb />terms of the slippery slope that using institu-<lb />tional psychiatry can bring about. ... There would<lb />be no end to what people will diagnose as a<lb />mental illness.<lb /><lb />Years ago, Jews were considered a public.<lb />health problem. Homosexuals were considered<lb />sick. Masturbation was considered an illness,<lb />and the father of American psychiatry, Ben- |<lb />jamin Rush, declared black skin to be a disease. °<lb />He said that blacks and whites should not inter- -<lb />marry because it would spread acongenital form |<lb />of leprosy he called negritude.<lb /><lb />Dr. Ron Liefer: There Ts a lot of consequences<lb />to classifying racism.as.a mental illness. Calling<lb />members of the Ku Klux Klan mentally ill would<lb /><lb />_ make it possible to send in the mental help troops,<lb />not only on Ku Klux Klan tallies, but on Khalid T<lb /><lb />Muhammad T s rallies. If the psychiatrists are white -<lb />and decide that Khalid Muhammad is a racist, :<lb />they could commit him to a mental hospital. We <lb />are opening a Pandora Ts Box of oppression and ~<lb />dumbing down America to moral issues.<lb /><lb />I don Tt believe racism is a mental illness, but<lb />I do think that racism is an example of a general<lb />human tendency to create and identify antitheti-<lb />cally. The only way we know who we are is by<lb />defining who we are not. And, if we have a poor<lb />sense of identity, we'll create it on the least<lb />common denominator, skin color, which is a<lb />rather stupid way of defining idenity.<lb /><lb />If we Tre going to call the basic human phe-<lb />nomenon of creating an identity mental illness,<lb />we are medicalizing human activity and harm-<lb />ing ourselves by dumbing ourselves down so<lb />that we can Tt distinguish good from evil because<lb />we're calling all evil mental illness and sending »<lb />it to psychiatrists to treat. Both<lb />orking hard in the black community.<lb /><lb />Photo by Jim Rouse<lb /><lb />Suejette Jones<lb /><lb />' THE OCCULT<lb /><lb />The word ooccult ? refers to what<lb />is hidden, concealed, or secret.<lb />The occult involves the spirit<lb />world of darkness. The occult is<lb /><lb />particularly deceptive because the<lb /><lb />spirit world is very real.<lb />Practitioners are dealing with<lb /><lb />~ reality--but dark, forbidden, and<lb /><lb />eyil reality.<lb /><lb />There are two kinds of spiritual<lb />reality. The first is God Ts spiritual<lb />Kingdom of truth and light, where<lb />Christ .is King, the nature of<lb />which is orighteousness and peace<lb />and joy in the Holy Spirit ?<lb />(Romans 14:17) and where God Ts<lb />holy angels dwell, worship, and<lb />serve Him. The second is the<lb />world of Satan (a fallen angel), a<lb />world of darkness and hopeless-<lb />ness, void, and where other fallen<lb /><lb />* angels (called demons) who hate<lb /><lb />God, work to advance this evil<lb />kingdom under their leader, Satan.<lb />This latter world of spiritual<lb />darkness is that which is experi-<lb />enced through the sinister prac-<lb />tices of the occult.<lb /><lb />The bible does not reveal a<lb />adualism?"?, or co-equal forces of<lb />good (represented by God) and<lb />evil (represented by Satan). Satan<lb /><lb />_is totally subject to the sovereign,<lb /><lb />omnipotent Creator. But God has .<lb /><lb />| given Satan certain authority to<lb />operate in the earth as a result of<lb /><lb />man Ts sinful fall. He operates<lb /><lb />| through the minds and wills of<lb /><lb />fallen humanity and he has con-<lb />structed a complex web of many<lb />evil schemes, including occult<lb />practices, even religious, to T de-<lb />ceive and snare people by appear-<lb />ing to offer access to supernatural<lb />power and knowledge. The Bible<lb />says that such deception will.<lb />increase in othe last days ? before<lb />Christ returns (I Timothy 4:1).<lb /><lb />| But the Bible also says, oThe Son<lb /><lb />of God appeared for this purpose,<lb />that He might destroy the works<lb />of the devil ? (I John 3:8). Those<lb />who trust and obey Jesus Christ<lb />have protection and victory<lb />through Him.<lb /><lb />Any degree of involvement can<lb />produce problems of oppression,<lb />depression, despair,<lb />hopelessness, and many physical<lb />problems, sometimes bringing<lb />death, even _ self-destruction.<lb />Demonic influence can produce<lb />Obsessions, phobias, bizarre be-<lb />havior, violence, homicide and<lb />sexual perversion in its victims.<lb />Worse, it can deceive a person<lb />into eternal darkness. The occult<lb /><lb />is a form of idolatry and a sin -<lb /><lb />expressly forbidden by God<lb />(Deuteronomy 18:9-13). In the<lb />New Testament when the gospel<lb />was proclaimed and received, the<lb />liberated people gladly burned all<lb />the occult materials (Acts 19:19).<lb /><lb />Here are just a few of the many<lb />occult practices; various kinds of<lb /> ofortune telling ?, " witchcraft,<lb />Satanism, seances, spiritual meet-<lb />ings, voodoo, magic charming,<lb />involvement with the psychics,<lb />use of mediums of ochanneling ?<lb />automatic writing. There is even<lb />compelling evidence that UFO Ts<lb />are real, but supernatural and<lb />often occult manifestations of<lb /><lb />fallen angels whose ultimate pur-<lb /><lb />pose is to deceive humanity into<lb /><lb />thinking that super-intelligent ex-<lb /><lb />-traterrestrial will help usher the<lb /><lb />earth into a golden oNew Age ? of<lb /> happiness without God, But with<lb />God rejected and without His.<lb />blessings, occult-practicing, lost<lb />and depraved humanity will soon<lb />bring itself the end-time global<lb />holocaust prophesied by " the<lb />Bible.<lb /><lb />If you now or have ever been,<lb />anytime in your life, involved<lb />with any cult or occult practice,<lb />you can be set free of it and any<lb />symptoms it may have brought by<lb />doing the following:<lb /><lb />1. Confess sincere faith in and<lb />commitment to Christ.<lb /><lb />2. Confess the cult and occult sin<lb />to God, naming and forsaking<lb />each one.<lb /><lb />3. Renounce Satan in Jesus T<lb />name, and his demons to depart.<lb /><lb />4. Receive and claim your<lb />liberation by faith, without doubt-<lb />ing, trusting in authority and total<lb />faithfulness of God and His Word.<lb /><lb />If you do this, Satan must obey<lb />and release you, by the authority<lb />of Jesus T Name and God Ts Word,<lb />and any symptoms that Satan puts<lb />on you must disappear.<lb /><lb />Note : Portions of this article<lb />have been taken from books of<lb />reference, and do not reflect the<lb />opinouns of Suejette Jones or The<lb />"M" Voice Newspaper.<lb /><lb />Reference: McDonnell, Josh and<lb />Stuart, Don.<lb /><lb />Understanding the Occult<lb /><lb />Submitted by Suejette Jones<lb /><lb />Suejette Jones is currently en-<lb />rolled in a bible studies program<lb />at Pitt Community College.<lb /><lb />Make Your Voice Heard, Vote May 2nd.<lb /><lb />FROM THE HEART:<lb />HYPERTENSION<lb /><lb />BY: Gordon Wilson<lb /><lb />If you are black, middle-<lb />aged, elderly, obese, a heavy<lb />drinker or a woman who is taking<lb />oral contraceptives, you are at a<lb />higher risk for hypertension.<lb />People with diabetes mellitus,<lb />gout or kidney disease have a<lb />higher frequency of hypertension.<lb /> Hypertension is the medical term<lb />for high blood flowing against<lb />artery walls. High blood pressure<lb />or hypertension can lead to an<lb />increase risk of coronary heart<lb />tisease. Most people do not<lb />realize that heart disease leads to<lb /><lb />eart attacks and strokes.<lb /><lb />«Normal blood pressure is consid-<lb />ered to be 130/85 to 139/89. The<lb />larger number is blood pressure<lb />when the heart pumps or beats;<lb />the lower number is pressure<lb />when the heart is between beats.<lb /> In recent years, doctors have<lb />identified three stages of hyper-<lb />tension, for example:<lb /><lb />Stage one is the mild stage, the<lb />blood pressure is 140/90 to<lb />159/99. Stage two is the moder-<lb />ate stage were the blood pressure<lb />js 180/110 or higher.<lb /><lb />fn<lb />|<lb /><lb />i<lb />f<lb />S<lb /><lb />4<lb /><lb />: WF f,<lb /><lb />.<lb />wee<lb /><lb />Hypertension can be controlled by<lb />modifying your risk factors:<lb /><lb />* Eating habits are a big contribu-<lb />tor to high blood pressure in most<lb />Americans. Most people can not<lb />handle a lot of salt or sodium in<lb />their daily diets and the increased<lb />use of salt can lead to high blood<lb />pressure. If people are diagnosed<lb /><lb />with high blood pressure a doctor »<lb /><lb />will often place them on a<lb />restricted diet low in salt or<lb />sodium. Reducing the amount of<lb />salt consumed will help to lower<lb />blood pressure in most people but<lb />not all. People should avoid<lb />cooking with salt and also cut<lb />back on eating foods that were<lb />cooked with salt.<lb /><lb />* For obese people reducing your<lb />weight and keeping it down can<lb />lower your risk of hypertension.<lb />Over time if you gain weight you<lb />might be advised to cut back on<lb />calories and lost a few pounds.<lb /><lb />* Physical activities will also help<lb />reduce the risk factor of develop-<lb />ing heart disease. Exercise will<lb />not only help control your weight<lb />but it will control your weight but<lb />it will also help reduce your blood<lb />pressure.<lb /><lb />* It is recommended that you limit<lb />your consumption of alcohol in-<lb />take to no more than<lb /><lb />24 ounces of beer or one glass of<lb />wine per day. Alcoholic drinks<lb /><lb />contain a high level of non-<lb />nutritious calories, so if you are<lb />trying to lose weight, try to avoid<lb />alcohol. ,<lb /><lb />A doctor can prescribe: the right<lb />diet for you that is both safe and<lb />satisfying. There is nothing better<lb />than a daily program consisting of.<lb />exercise and the right diet. -<lb /><lb />For some people, losing weight,<lb />cutting back on sodium and other<lb />lifestyles designed too reduce<lb />high blood pressure. If hyperten-<lb />sion is identified in a person they<lb />can typically get it under control<lb />with medications and making<lb />changes in their lifestyle with the<lb />guidance of a health practitioner.<lb /><lb />There are a number of medica-<lb />tions available to help control<lb />hypertension.<lb /><lb />Many medications are available .<lb /><lb />to reduce high blood pressure.<lb />Some get rid of excess fluid and<lb />sodium of salt; others relax con-<lb />stricted blood vessels; and others<lb />prevent blood vessels from<lb />constricting and narrowing.<lb />Because there is usually no cure<lb />for high blood pressure, treatment<lb />generally must be carried out for<lb />life. If treatment is stopped, the<lb />pressure may rise again. <lb />Republican Truth<lb /><lb />"Building Bridges Toward<lb />Minorities"<lb /><lb />The New Majority Council<lb />(NMC) was started by our<lb />Chairperson, former Senator<lb />Henry McKoy, to broaden the<lb />base of the Republican party,<lb />communicating to America's mi-<lb />norities the same ? ideas _ that<lb />brought Republican majorities to<lb />Congress and state governments<lb />across the nation: quality and<lb />choice in education, safe streets,<lb />_ safe schools and relief from<lb />burdensome taxes and regulations<lb />that stifle and destroy the entre-<lb />preneurial initiative. Our message<lb />of heritage. hope and opportunity<lb />is already engaging men and<lb />women of racial and cultural<lb />diversity throughout this country.<lb /><lb />The Republican party not only<lb />wants to increase the number of<lb />those voting Republicans. but is<lb />committed to helping Republican<lb />State parties with their efforts to<lb />recruit and support Republican<lb />minority candidates for local,<lb />state and federal offices. The<lb />NMC comprises male and female<lb />leaders from business. industry<lb />and government, as well as the<lb />community - parents and teachers<lb />- who are committed to making a<lb />difference at the local and national<lb />levels.<lb /><lb />The message is that the<lb />Republican party has a powerful<lb />message for America's minorities<lb />- we trust you to make a<lb />difference for your family and<lb />your community.<lb /><lb />Support:Henry McKoy " -<lb />Treasurer (919)881-9029<lb /><lb />Jess Ward - U.S. Congress<lb /><lb />(919)467-9438<lb /><lb />The Republican party evolved<lb />during the 1850's when the. issue<lb />of slavery forced divisions within<lb />the existing Whig and Democratic<lb />parties. Some believers spend a<lb />majority of their time praying for<lb /><lb />_ the same things over and over<lb /><lb />again. That's T a sign that they did<lb />not believe that they received<lb />what they asked for the first time.<lb />He said T what things so ever ye<lb />desire when ye pray, believe that<lb /><lb />ye receive them and 5 ?,? shall have i<lb /><lb />| them. The Lord said you ask by<lb />~ faith, believe by faith, and receive -<lb />by faith, but the key to the<lb />1 manifestation. of what was asked<lb />dies in praise and worship. When<lb />we get in this atmosphere of.<lb />| action, we will find that we will<lb />| always be praising the Lord for<lb /> something, Why? Because: when<lb />we pray we believe that. we.<lb />| receive therefore. creating an at-<lb />| mosphere of thanksgiving unto<lb />the Lord. It will always be a<lb /> ocontinuous flow. We also have to<lb />be willing to wait on God's<lb /><lb />timing, purpose, and season but in<lb />the meantime, we are continually<lb />setting the tone for the manifesta-<lb />tion of our request. by praising<lb />Him Whenever the thing prayed<lb />about comes to mind that has not<lb />yet manifested, you can say |<lb /><lb /> thank the Lord | believe | receive<lb /><lb />what I have asked of the Lord. It<lb />may not come today, tomorrow or<lb />even months from now but you<lb />must have a determination to<lb />believe regardless of what it looks<lb />like. You have to look beyond the<lb />present circumstance and situation<lb />and see the mighty hand of God<lb />You must even look beyond the<lb />present and see the future out-<lb />come by faith.
