          <lb />BY HERB BOYD<lb />Special to the AmNews<lb /><lb />Putting the final touches on their<lb />case, defense lawyers in the<lb />Amadou Diallo trail, where four<lb />white cops are charged with<lb />second-degree murder, summoned<lb />two officers and a professor of<lb />criminal justice to the stand.<lb /><lb />Officer Michael Barrow of the<lb />K-9 division testified to the dim-<lb />ness of the vestibule at 1157<lb />Wheeler Ave.. where Diallo Ts<lb />body was riddled with 19 of 41<lb />bullets fired at him last February.<lb /> oThe lights were so dim that | had<lb />to use my flashlight to see, ?<lb />Barrow told the court.<lb /><lb />The next witness, Sgt. Robert<lb />Patelli, who, like the accused<lb />officers, is a member of the Street<lb />Crime Unit in the Bronx, recalled<lb />the conditions of the officers<lb />following the shooting . He said<lb />Officer Kenneth Boss appeared<lb />pale and that Officer Sean<lb />Carroll's face was red and his<lb />eyes were welled with tears.<lb />Professor James Fyfe spent a<lb />good part Wednesday morning<lb />and afternoon telling the court<lb />about the training, standards and<lb />practices police officer go<lb />through, and corroborated the<lb />officers T methods approaching<lb />and attempting to apprehend<lb />Diallo, who was unarmed and<lb />whose wallet, the officers be-<lb /><lb />lieved, was a gun.<lb /><lb />While their remarks substanu-<lb />ated previous testimony, they<lb />were anticlimactic compared to<lb />the stories the officers told when<lb />they took the stand, and none of<lb />the words from the officers were<lb />more dramatic than the teary<lb />testimony of Carroll.<lb /><lb />Carroll could not hold back the<lb />tears on Monday as he recalled<lb />the events surrounding the shoot-<lb />ing, and more than one spectator<lb />in the Diallo camp wondered<lb />where his compassion<lb />and understanding was that fateful<lb />night last February, when he held<lb />his pistol and fired 16 of the 41<lb />shots that rained down around<lb />Diallo in the vestibule of his home<lb />in the Bronx.<lb /><lb />Visibly shaken, Carroll repeat-<lb />edly removed his glasses and<lb />covered his face as prosecutor<lb />Don Levin peppered him with<lb />questions. oI don Tt know who<lb />fired the first shot, ? Carroll an-<lb />swered, when asked about the<lb />sequence of shots, adding, oThere<lb />was no pause in my shots...if there<lb />was a pause it came when Officer<lb />McMellon flew past me. ?<lb /><lb />Whether there was a decisive<lb />pause in the volley of shots, and<lb />whether Diallo was still standing<lb />after the heavy fusillade are the<lb />questions at the core of this<lb />2-week-old trial in Albany, which<lb />has been -attended each day by<lb /><lb />Diallo Ts parents. oHe was still<lb />standing, ? Carroll continued.<lb /> oMy bullets seemed to have no<lb /><lb />effect... | thought he was wearing ©<lb /><lb />a bullet-proof vest...and he never<lb />made a sound. ?<lb /><lb />The officer said he continued to<lb />fire because he believed the<lb />muzzle flashes he saw came from<lb />the alleged gun that in reality was<lb />a wallet. oDid:you shoot Mr.<lb />Diallo while he was down on the<lb />ground? ? Levin asked. oNo, ?<lb />Carroll responded.<lb /><lb /> oAre you aware that the bullet<lb />that pierced Mr. Diallo Ts foot<lb />came from your weapon? ? Levin<lb />persisted. One of many objec-<lb />tions from the defense attorneys<lb />followed this question and Judge<lb />Joseph Teresi sustained it.<lb /><lb />Most of Carroll Ts tears came<lb />when he recounted what hap-<lb />pened after he discovered that<lb />Diallo Ts supposed gun was actu-<lb />ally a wallet. oI bent down over<lb />him, pulled back his coat and saw<lb />that he had two wounds ito his<lb />upper body, ? Carroll told the jury<lb />of six white women, four Black<lb />women and two white men.<lb /><lb /> oHe was still breathing and | said,<lb /> oPlease don Tt die, please don Tt<lb />die. ? | held his hand and checked<lb />his vitals. 1 put my hand to his<lb />chest and pumped a few times.<lb />Then somebody grabbed me by<lb />the shoulder and told me there<lb /><lb />was nothing | could do. ?<lb /><lb />to<lb /><lb />Ins -e Fraud Don't<lb />Let lt Happen to You<lb /><lb /> i<lb /><lb />INSURANCE FRAUD DON TT<lb />LET IT HAPPEN TO YOU<lb /><lb />_ By Faith May<lb /><lb />Rev. He<lb />was not people oriented.<lb /><lb />At the time he was young all he<lb />thought about was selling insur-<lb />ance. For three years he was one<lb /><lb />of the top insurance salesman in<lb /><lb />North Carolina. :<lb />October 4, 1978 Rev. Aaron<lb />Pittman lost his mother. He found<lb />Out after his mother Ts death that<lb />she had paid on a life insurance<lb />Policy for years. The person that<lb />Serviced her was very kind and<lb />polite. After<lb />his mother passed, the money was<lb />not there for funeral expenses.<lb />Afier thinking that everything had<lb />been taken care of the family<lb />ended up borrowing money to<lb />bury his mother.<lb /><lb />The family was very hurt because<lb />of this situation. After working<lb />on the farm for years his mother<lb />was finally able to move off the<lb />farm and purchase a home of her<lb />own. She only spent one year in<lb />her home until she died. Instead, there were at least<lb /><lb />-300,000 black people waiting to<lb />take part in the march. They had<lb />begun to form as early as 8 or 9 a.m.<lb />.. The march was not scheduled to<lb />begin until about 2 p.m.<lb />. . Although the march had been<lb />advertised as a freedom rally or<lb />civil rights rally, as the people gath-<lb />ered, it was almost as if this was a<lb />sacred religious service. The high-<lb />est-ranking black police officer in<lb />the city, Lt. George Harge, was as-<lb />signed to meet Dr. King Ts plane and<lb />to be with him throughout the day.<lb />This event had been so widely<lb />ballyhooed, that some of the big-<lb />gest liberal names in town came to<lb />take part in the march. The front<lb />row of the march was like the who Ts<lb />who in Detroit liberal politics. An-<lb />other aspect of the march and rally<lb />was that it took place, on the 20th<lb /><lb />Parallel processes are underway<lb />locally to select a superintendent in<lb /><lb />the Los Angeles Unified School Dis- .<lb /><lb />trict, which has over 700,000 stu-<lb />dents and in neighboring Inglewood<lb />Unified School District with 16,000<lb />students. Both districts are seeking<lb />a chief executive to improve educa-<lb />tional results and effectively mana<lb />age operations and finances "<lb />LAUSD Ts budget exceeds $7 bil-<lb />lion annually and requires a team of<lb />accounting experts to understand<lb />its many ramifications. Most im-<lb />portantly, the superintendents must<lb />have a vision and strategy for re-<lb />versing the culture of failure, espe-<lb />cially for African American stu-<lb />dents who continue to languish at<lb />the lowest achievement levels.<lb /><lb />Although essential, management<lb />and political skills alone are not<lb />sufficient to effectively impact the<lb />complex challenge of providing<lb />every child in every school a sound<lb />education. However the political<lb />will of school boards and others of<lb />influence in any school district is<lb />critical for educational success.<lb /><lb />A community actively partici-<lb />pating in the process of selecting a<lb />new superintendent actually helps<lb />validate that process. Without com-<lb />munity involvement, school boards<lb />are left to traditional, unilateral self-<lb />serving decision-making. Histori-<lb />cally, this has been the rule rather<lb />than the exception; community par-<lb /><lb />ticipation has been little more than .<lb />window dressing, i.e., a obragging<lb /><lb />point ? for school boards with virtu-<lb /><lb />os 7 ing in Detroit. The a » how-<lb />a. - ever, never grew impatient. The aura<lb />| were plastered all over town and<lb /><lb />_ |. the local radio stations played it up<lb />~ for all it'was worth. The name of<lb /><lb />Dr. King was becoming a house-<lb /><lb />_ Dr. King T spline saree ary.<lb /><lb /> of the day was that something won-<lb />derful was going to happen and<lb /><lb /> onobody wanted to miss a second of<lb />- whatever was planned.<lb /><lb />Finally, Dr. King pe I was<lb />prepared to see an average sized<lb />man, but instead, there was this<lb />diminutive, rather ordinary little<lb />man, with a hair line that looked as<lb />though it was ready to recede and a<lb /><lb />quiet, serious face. had never heard<lb /><lb />him speak, and was not quite sure<lb />what to expect. As a matter of fact,<lb /><lb />I might have even been a little dis-<lb /><lb />appointed in what I saw.<lb /><lb />The march took place without in-<lb />cident. Professor Thomas Shelby,<lb />minister of music at New Bethel, had<lb />pulled together a mass choir with about<lb />1,000 voices. The choir had been sing-<lb />ing while the march was going on and<lb />the people were filing into Cobo Hall<lb />in Downtown Detroit.<lb /><lb />Never before in the history of<lb />Detroit, had there been such a gath-<lb />ering of black people in support of<lb />the civil rights struggle. As a rela-<lb />tively young newspaper reporter,<lb />this was the momentous event I had<lb />ever covered. <lb /><lb />My managing editor, Albert J.<lb />Dunmore, had given me the assign-<lb />ment because he knew I had never<lb />seen Dr. King, and that I had no<lb /><lb />ally no bearing on their actual deci-<lb />sions.<lb />There is little the community<lb /><lb />can do to ensure that its input is<lb /><lb />considered, except regularly remind<lb />school boards that they are ulti-<lb />mately accountable to the people.<lb />(Appeal to school boards T integrity<lb /><lb />;and good will have not been known .<lb /><lb />tq succeed.)<lb /><lb />The Los Angeles and Inglewood<lb />districts are faced with a plethora of<lb />old and emerging problems that call<lb />for a superintendent who must prac-<lb />tically walk on water. Both districts<lb />are seeking the community's views<lb />on what constitutes an effective<lb />superintendent. What do parents and<lb />other community members believe<lb /><lb />- are the important characteristics and<lb /><lb />skills of a superintendent?<lb /><lb />LAUSD established a Superin-<lb />tendent Criteria Selection Commit-<lb />tee which is scheduled to conclude<lb />its work by Jan. 24. Thereafter, the<lb />board will likely name a selection<lb />committee which will probably help<lb />screen candidates for the board Ts<lb />consideration. A search firm has<lb />been hired to coordinate the selec-<lb />tion process.<lb /><lb />The top priority issues in both<lb />school districts reflect the need to<lb />improve achievement scores and<lb />address concerns around changing<lb />demographics. In addition, a host<lb />of other problems such as facilities,<lb />textbooks, teacher recruitment<lb />preparation and effectiveness are<lb />also pressing.<lb /><lb />In LADAD, SD, some key issues for<lb /><lb />ix velevision cameras "<lb /><lb />cameras and note paper during the<lb /><lb />microphone. Somebody on stage<lb /><lb />found a Coca Cola case and placed<lb />it behind the podium for him.<lb /><lb />As I took stock of my surround-<lb />ings, I realized I was standing next<lb />to an attorney from nearby Pontiac,<lb />MI., named Milton Henry. Henry<lb />had an impressive freedom-fight-<lb /><lb />ing resume behind him. He had been<lb /><lb />an infantry officer in the U.S. Army,<lb />but had given up his commission to<lb />enter fight training and become a<lb />member of the famed<lb /> oSpookwaffe. ? He had also been<lb />court-martialed for being one of the<lb />leaders of a group of black officers<lb />who went into a white officers club.<lb />It is my opinion that Milton<lb />Henry had a sense of the impor-<lb />tance of the day. He was an amateur<lb />photographer and was taking pic-<lb />tures all over the place. He had also<lb />brought his Nagra recorder and had<lb />recorded every word that was spo-<lb />ken in that packed arena that day.<lb />From a musical perspective,<lb />there probably will never be a choir<lb />as large and as well rehearsed as<lb />those voices in that hall. They didn Tt<lb />need amplification. They were mo-<lb />tivatéd to sing the Songs of Zion<lb /><lb />the African American community<lb />include Magnet schools, raising<lb />academic achievement, improving<lb />attendance, upgrading school facili-<lb />ties, quality of school personnel,<lb />including principals and teachers,<lb />course selection (e.g.) Advanced<lb />Placement), safety in and around<lb />school campuses, school supplies,<lb />including textbooks and library<lb />books and increasing the number of<lb />African American students apply-<lb />ing for post-secondary education.<lb />To assist, the Criteria Selection<lb />Committee, the district provided draft<lb />criteria which included the need for a<lb />strong leader and manager to inte-<lb />grate all aspects of the district to sup-<lb />port student achievement; leadership,<lb />(e.g., consensus-building), manage-<lb />ment, (e.g., has record of transform-<lb />ing a large organization, including the<lb />business side); education, (e.g., must<lb />provide vision and instructional lead-<lb />ership), and strategic thinking, (e.g.,<lb />proven record of charting) and imple-<lb />menting a strategy for a large, com-<lb />plex organization. In addition, aschool<lb />community questionnaire was widely<lb />circulated, soliciting the commtunity Ts<lb /><lb />views on the most important criteria<lb /><lb />for the board to apply to candidates in<lb />selecting a new superintendent.<lb /><lb />The Inglewood Unified School<lb />District is also actively seeking com-<lb />munity input in the superintendent<lb />selection process. At least, one well-<lb />publicized Town Hall meeting has<lb />been held to hear the community Ts<lb />thinking on what skills and qualities<lb />the board should be pokins for in<lb /><lb />rally. One of the things that stands<lb />out in mind as I recall all of the<lb />things which took place, was Dr.<lb />King asking for abox that he could<lb /><lb />to Present and we had to sare the speak<lb /><lb />. When he talked about his chil-<lb />dren and white children playing to<lb />together and being judged by the<lb />content of their character rather than<lb />the color of their skin, I knew I had<lb />heard the greatest leader, the great-<lb /><lb />,eSt preache, the greatest freedom<lb />fighter I would ever know.<lb /><lb />When he came to the climax of<lb />the sermon-oratory-speech and said,<lb /> oIn the words of the old Negro spiri-<lb />tual. oFree at last, free at last! Thank<lb />God Almighty, I Tm free at last! ? I<lb />could not see the podium. Everybody<lb />agrees that there is less of it than<lb />there used to be.<lb /><lb />Leadership is the pivotal force<lb />behind successful organizations<lb />and that to create vital and viable<lb />organizations, leadership is neces-<lb />sary to help organizations develop<lb />a new vision of what they can be,<lb />then mobilize the organization<lb />change toward the new vision.<lb /><lb />Some great leaders are Moses,<lb />Pericles, Julius Caesar, Jesus<lb />Christ, Ghandhi, Dr. Martin<lb />Luther King, Jr. Archbishop<lb />Desmond Tutu, and Winston<lb />Churchill among many others.<lb /><lb />Management VS_ Leadership:<lb />Managers are people who do<lb />things right and leaders are people<lb /><lb />who do the right thing. Let's get<lb />rid of management. People don't<lb />want to be managed. They want<lb />to be led. Ask your horse. You<lb />can lead your horse to water, but<lb />you can't manage him to drink. Talent, genius, education "<lb />will not make leaders, but persis-<lb /><lb />tence, determination are omnipo-<lb />tent, 0 AER ae<lb /><lb />Leaders might use five skills:<lb /><lb />1. The ability to accept people as<lb />they are, not as you would like<lb />them to be.<lb /><lb />2. The capacity to approach<lb />relationships and problems in<lb />terms of the present rather than<lb />the past, though we can learn<lb />from the past.<lb /><lb />3. The ability to treat those who<lb />are close to you with the same<lb />courteous attention that you ex-<lb />tend to strangers and casual<lb />acquaintances. We tend to take for<lb />granted those to whom we are<lb />closest.<lb /><lb />4. The ability to trust others, even<lb />if the risk seems great.<lb /><lb />5. The ability to do without<lb />constant approval and recognition<lb />from others, It should not really<lb />matter how many people _ like<lb />leaders. The important thing is<lb />the quality of work that results<lb />from collaborating with them. It<lb />is the large part of a leader's job<lb />to take risks.<lb /><lb />To the successful leader, failure is<lb />a beginning, the springboard of<lb />hope. To worry puts obstacles in<lb />the way of clear thinking.<lb /><lb />Effective leadership negates pro-<lb />test, grievance and career change<lb />as well as resignation and apathy.<lb />Lao Tzu said, "To lead, we must<lb />follow"<lb /><lb />People want to do a good job and<lb />be associated with success.<lb />People will do a good job if:<lb /><lb />Management that Leads<lb /><lb />Their efforts are recognized and<lb />appreciated iw .<lb /> We attach no blame to "failure"<lb />Everybody assumes responsibility<lb />for the produce.<lb /><lb />We leave workers alone and allow<lb />them flexibility "<lb /><lb />The above will earn respect and<lb />belief, trust, satisfaction and fun.<lb /><lb />Lao Tzu said, "Fail to honor<lb />people, they fail to honor you; but<lb />of a good leader, who talks little,<lb /><lb /> owhen his work is done, his aim<lb /><lb />fulfilled, they will all say, "we did<lb />this ourselves".<lb /><lb />Trust is the emotional glue that<lb />binds followers and leaders to-<lb />gether. <lb />Dr. George Hawkins<lb /><lb />' BE Leda THYSELF<lb />ave been doing some thinking<lb />afr: the various runing here in<lb /><lb />itt County and surrounding coun-<lb />ties. The Word is being preached<lb />everywhere yet it seems as though<lb />the believers of the Body of Christ<lb />are getting worse. The Word is<lb />supposed to bring about a change<lb />in our lives. I have observed that<lb />the more believers attend church,<lb />the more Word they hear, the<lb />harder they get. The Word is a<lb />looking glass to our soul.. Instead<lb />of pushing it off on someone else<lb />and looking at someone else Ts life,<lb />we should be raking that Word to<lb />ourselves and our focus should be<lb />on the Lord Jesus Christ.<lb /><lb />I hear believers witness to the -<lb />truth by ouh huh ? and Amen, etc.<lb />and no sooner than the service has<lb />ended, nasty attitudes are mani-<lb />fested and attributes of the flesh<lb />are demonstrated before they can<lb />get out the door.<lb /><lb />The Lord has revealed to me that<lb />in the natural, these believers<lb />appear normal when looking at<lb />them in the flesh and it seems like<lb />they are receiving the Word, but if<lb />you could see their spirit man as<lb />God sees it, you would see that<lb />their spirit resembles that of a<lb />severely deformed person or as<lb /><lb />- preaching and<lb /><lb />fast. In any case,<lb />whenever and however they are<lb />manifested, right then and there is<lb />the time it deal with it. If you<lb /><lb />don Tt, you will not grow Spiritu-<lb /><lb />ally. You will be spiritually<lb /><lb />all that He has ordained for you.<lb /><lb />We have really heard uel<lb />teaching. Nat are<lb />we doing with it? Is it justifying us<lb />or condemning us? Is it bringing us<lb />closer to the Lord or ing us<lb />further in the opposite direction?<lb />Only time will tell.<lb /><lb />Consider the parable of the<lb />wheat and the tares. Tares are<lb />nothing but weeds. The food seed<lb />was sown but fhe enemy came<lb />along and planted tares among the<lb />wheat and went his way. So to<lb />from uprooting the wheat (Good<lb />seed), the sower let them both grow<lb />together and at the time of harvest,<lb />the reapers were to gather together<lb />first the tates and bind them in<lb />bundles to be burned but gather the<lb />wheat into the barn.<lb /><lb />'<lb /><lb />In conclusion, I leave you with a<lb />question to ponder. When the<lb />reaper (Jesus Christ) comes, will<lb />He gather you as a tare to be<lb />burned or will He gather you as<lb />wheat to be harvested? Take an<lb />inventory of yourself.
