Don't feel entitled to anything you dont sweat and strugg<lb /><lb />Mat Bh Hrs<lb /><lb />By Kwaku Person-Lynn, PhD<lb />Special to The Sentinel<lb /><lb />* In February 1926, Dr. Carter G.<lb />Woodsoon, the reputed father of<lb />black history, started T Black<lb />History Week. In the 1960s, it<lb /><lb /> oexpanded to a whole month.<lb /><lb />Through time, consciousness amd<lb />terminology evolutions, many now<lb />refer to it as African American<lb />History Month. Some go even<lb />further and call it African<lb />American History § Month.<lb />Whatever the title, the purpose is<lb />generally the same; a time to<lb />reflect upon a lost history that was<lb />written out of the history books<lb />during the time of the slave trade<lb />and slavery. This basically<lb />occurred around the 14th,- 15th<lb />and 16th centuries when European<lb />Christians and Jews involved<lb />thhemselves in the illegal transport<lb />of Africans to the Americas &amp;- "<lb /><lb />western Africa. Arab Muslims<lb />had already began their version of<lb />the slave trade approximately 600<lb />years prior on the eastern coast of<lb />Africa, which still exists to this<lb />very day in the northeastern region<lb />of the contiment.<lb /><lb />All of this, from a Western<lb />perspective, could probably be<lb />traced to some earlier events in<lb />Europe. During the 1200s, Nicolo<lb />and Maffeo Polo, the father and<lb />uncle of Marco Polo, starting from<lb />Venice, traveled throughout cen-<lb />tral Asia all the way to China<lb />(then called Cathay). They re-<lb /><lb />In. 1271,<lb /><lb />out for China again. On their<lb />return journey, they took a differ-<lb /><lb />ent route back, which exposed<lb />them to India. In 1298, Marco<lb />published a book, Description of<lb />the World. This fired the imagina-<lb />tion of the Europeans regarding<lb />the exotic lands and potential<lb />treasures to be captured.<lb /><lb />In 1492, Spain, which was<lb />suffering its oown economic woes,<lb />along with its desire for explora-<lb />tion and the possibility of convert-<lb />ing so-called- pagans to<lb />Christianity, saw these new new-<lb />found wealth. By the way, we call<lb />indegenous people of America<lb /> oIndians ?, and the Caribbean the<lb /> oWest Indies ?, because Columbus<lb />lied to the Spanish crown in<lb />reporting that he had landed in<lb />India; his ultimate destination.<lb /><lb />This was the beginning of a<lb />European explosion of world ex-<lb />ploration. When new lands were<lb />found, the immediate need to<lb />exploit these territories was labor.<lb /><lb />The indegenous people of these<lb />newly discovered lands did not<lb />work out as a new labor force. The<lb />church also opposed using them,<lb />preferring to make them converts T<lb />and servants of the faith.<lb /><lb />The church had no oppostion in<lb />using Africans as the labor force<lb />for these new lands. In fact, it<lb />even used biblical stories, such as<lb />the curse of Ham Ts descendents,<lb />theoretically black people, to jus-<lb />tify enslaving Africans. The curse<lb />was said to have turned Ham Ts<lb />descendents black, making them<lb />heathen and non-human, which is<lb />not in. the Bible at all. . Since<lb />Afficans were now classified as<lb />nonhuman, this released the guilt<lb />Christians might have felt other-<lb />wise. Thus, it was not difficult of<lb /><lb />them to rationalize the first ship to<lb />illegally otransport. Africans to<lb />America, was called oJesus ?...<lb />They didn Tt stop there. This was<lb />also a time when Africans were<lb />excluded from world history, or<lb />depicted as people who. had no<lb />history or culture of any conse-<lb />quence. Thus, Africa was labeled<lb />the Dark Continent. This trend<lb />would continue for centuries and<lb />laid: the foundation for white<lb />supremacy and racism. The true<lb />history of African people in the<lb />world has only begun to seriously:<lb />surface in the last three decades;<lb />though there were isolated exam-<lb />ples that were hard to find*<lb />Publishers and bookstores owned<lb />by people of African descent have<lb />made significant difference in<lb />making this literature available by<lb />black scholars and writers.<lb /><lb />Dr. Woodson would be proud of<lb />those who use February as a time<lb /><lb />to rekindle a history long denied.<lb />Unfortunately, there are those who<lb />have reduced it to eating events,<lb />fashion shows, dinner dat :<lb />parties and other social events<lb />have-absolutely no historical sig-<lb />nificance. There is nothing wrong<lb />with the events themselves; it Ts<lb />just that the purpose for the month<lb />are completely lost within them.<lb />Minister Malcolm X Shabazz<lb />once made the statement, oThe<lb /><lb />worst thing the white man did to -<lb /><lb />us was to teach us to hate<lb />ourselves. ? That hatred is mani-<lb />fested in not knowing who we are.<lb />Even. in the. ancient<lb /><lb />in Africa, they stated oMan Know<lb />Thyself. ?<lb /><lb />Bennett College host White Breakfast<lb /><lb />Bennett College "White Breakfast", shown are some of the lovely ladies in attandance wh ecognize<lb />as phenomenal women for the year 2000. It Ts well-known that blacks and Latino are far<lb /><lb />_ less likely to file complaints against abusive police officers because of<lb /><lb />a Baca also claimed that it would be too costly and time consuming to<lb />__ . keep racial stats. This is just as flimsy an excuse. Police chiefs in the other<lb /><lb />_ Gites have found time and the money to compile the figures and they have<lb />Rot complained about the cost and effort. In fact, if cost was really a big<lb />Obstacle the California Highway Patrol would: probably squawk the<lb />loudest. It makes more traffic stops statewide than any other state police<lb />_. agency in the country. Yet CHP officials voluntarily began compiling<lb />stats in 1999, and they did it without any complaint.<lb />._ Baca Ts excuses make so little sense that one has to think he refuses to<lb />_» keep stats because he is afraid of what he may find. And with good reason.<lb />. In recent years, swelling numbers of African-Americans and Latinos,<lb /><lb />. many of them respected elected officials, busines spersons, professionals, .<lb /><lb />'. and that includes a black state senator and judge, have accused law<lb /> enforcement agencies in L.A. County of targeting them for odriving while<lb />. black and brown. ? In Northern California, the ACLU has filed a class<lb />. action suit against the CHP on behalf of Latino motorists who claim that<lb />| they were racially targeted. Nationally, a Justice Department study found<lb />| that blacks comprise about 14 percent of the population, yet account for<lb /> more than 70 percent of all routine traffic stops.<lb />_._ Racial profiling has ignited more impassioned fury among black and<lb />. Latino leaders than almost any other issue. It has sparked demonstrations,<lb />' lawsuits by dozens of black and Latino motorists, denunciations by many<lb />: State and national officials, and a demand by Democratic presidential<lb />. contender Bill Bradley that Gore prod Clinton to Sign an executive order<lb />_ banning racial profiling. The practice is so prevalent and damaging that<lb />__ the Justice Department in December wrung a promise out of state officials<lb /> oin New Jersey to stop racially profiling motorists. .<lb />_ But Baca certainly must know that black and Latino leaders can<lb />_ complain all they want about odriving while black and brown ? abuses. Yet<lb />| there Ts no way for them to prove their claims without producing hard<lb />_ fhumbers on who's being stopped, the reasons they're stopped, and<lb />' whether a search and arrest was made as a result of the stop.<lb />| The actions of police agencies in L.A. County are intently watched and<lb />| frequently emulated by other departments across the country. If Baca had<lb />' agreed to the Supervisors T proposal it might have spurred police and city<lb />' Officials elsewhere who have dodged or foot-dragged on the issue of racial<lb />| profiling to take action on the Problem. It also gave him the golden<lb />_ Opportunity to silence once and for all the legions of critics who contend<lb />_ that the Sheriff's department routinely harasses and intimidates blacks<lb />and Latinos on the streets and highways.<lb /><lb />Since Los Angeles County is the nation Ts largest county with blacks,<lb />Latinos, and Asians soon to make up a majority of the population, police<lb />officials should be duty bound to quell all doubts that they treat minorities<lb /><lb />_ unjustly. Though Baca blew his chance to do this by rejecting the<lb />Supervisor Ts proposal, they must keep pressing him to do his duty.<lb />(Earl Ofari Hutchinson is a nationally syndicated columnist and the<lb />_ director of the National Alliance for Positive Action. <lb />8 oaupacon._ |<lb /><lb />mission to study the feasibility of paying<lb /> oreparations to the black descendants of the _ U<lb />victims of slavery. The bill authored by<lb />House Democrat John Conyers Jr. would "<lb /><lb />allocate $8 million to fund the commission.<lb />The city council Ts endorsement of the bill<lb /><lb />drew the instant wrath of the white council<lb /><lb />_ They claimed that the reparations issue<lb />is too murky and messy, will deepen racial<lb /><lb />fault lines, demonize the federal govern-<lb /><lb /> ment, dredge up a long by-gone past that<lb /><lb />should be buried, unfairly compare the.<lb /><lb /> plight of blacks with other victim groups<lb />that have received reparations, and ignores<lb /><lb />the huge economic and social gains blacks "<lb /><lb />have made since slavery. The slim majority<lb /><lb />Of the council that passed the resolution<lb />| dismissed these objections. But the reasons<lb /><lb />the council members objected to it can Tt<lb />easily be dismissed.<lb /><lb />' They, like many Americans, bristle at<lb /> the notion of paying blacks for slavery.<lb />They fervently believe that the passage of<lb />three civil rights bills, numerous affirma-<lb />tive action statutes, piles of court decisions<lb />that guarantee civil rights and civil liber-<lb />ties protections, a tepid acknowledgment<lb /><lb />» from President Clinton that slavery was<lb /><lb />wrong, and massive government spending<lb />on business, education, housing, health and<lb /><lb />' social programs for blacks have done much<lb /><lb /> to right the historic injustice of slavery and<lb />its legacy. Since the toppling of legal seg-<lb />regation, the spectacular rise of a wealthier,<lb />better-educated, and more upwardly mo-<lb />bile black middle class, they say, is con-<lb />-vincing proof that blacks have gone far in<lb /><lb /> shaking loose the legacy of slavery. They<lb /><lb />also raise these troublesome questions on<lb />the reparations issue.<lb />* White liability. The U.S. government,<lb /><lb />mately ended slavery. Northern industrial-<lb /><lb />ists supplied weapons and financing forthe<lb /><lb />wat and many white churches relentlessly<lb /><lb />called for the total destruction of slavery.<lb /><lb />Moreover, millions of European immigrants<lb />came to America decades after the Civil<lb />War ended and slavery was formally abol-<lb />ished in 1865. They derived no tangible<lb />economic benefits fromit. = = = =~<lb />* Money and consequences. No one has<lb />yet come up with a credible sum that should<lb />be paid, nor a method to pay it for slavery.<lb />If the U.S. government is indeed liable, the<lb />burden of payment would fall on taxpayers.<lb />This would ignite a monumental backlash<lb />among many whites to the use of their tax<lb />dollars for reparations. It would cause night-<lb />marish jitters among many African-Ameri-<lb />cans, who regard the reparations issue as<lb />too little too late, that they would be targets<lb />of massive scorn and vilification for harp-<lb />ing on an issue that is many decades past. It<lb />would prompt Chinese Americans, Mexi-<lb />can Americans, and Native Americans to<lb />rightly claim that since they were racially<lb />abused, viciously exploited for their labor<lb />and had their lands ripped-off, so they are<lb />also entitled to compensation. At the very<lb />least, they would justly claim that their tax<lb />dollars should not go to pay reparations for<lb />slavery. _<lb />Reparations to others. Japanese-Ameri-<lb />cans, Holocaust survivors-:and the Korean<lb />comfort, women bagged big cash payments<lb />for atrocities committed against them. But<lb />there Was near universal public and official<lb />consensus that they were the victims of<lb /><lb />that cost thousands of white lives, and ulti-<lb /><lb /> ojewelry to them. The bankers shamefully ©<lb /><lb /> clear obligation to repay them for their<lb /><lb />In 1997, the black survivors and family ©<lb /><lb />members of the two-decade long syphilis: @<lb />experiment begun in the 1930s by the U.S.<lb /><lb />Public Health oy iriver end<lb /><lb />guinea pigs got $10 million from the gov-<lb />were victims of medical genocide conducted<lb /><lb />_ with the full knowledge and approval of the<lb />U.S. government. The government was duty<lb /><lb />~ bound to pay and apobogize to them for<lb />their suffering. Cea<lb /><lb />These are the objections that many "<lb />Americans repeatedly make whenever the.<lb /> demand is made to pay for slavery. But = ?<lb />these objections don Tt alter the fact that<lb />slavery was a morally monstrous system<lb />that wreaked severe pain and suffering on<lb />America, generated stupendous profits for<lb />bankers, industrialists, and big landown-<lb />ers, saddled many blacks with the horrific -<lb />legacy of poor schools, a drug and crime T<lb />plague, high rates of incarceration, family<lb /><lb /> deterioration and racially-isolated neigh-<lb />borhoods. .<lb /><lb />If it takes a federal commission to help<lb />explain if, why and how reparations should<lb />be paid for slavery, then Congress should<lb />move quickly and set it up. This just might<lb />do a lot to make reparations much less of a<lb />touchy question for many Americans.<lb /><lb />(Earl Ofari Hutchinson is a nationally<lb /><lb />- syndicated columnist and the director of<lb />the National Alliance for Positive Action.<lb />He can be heard on KPFK Radio, 90.7FM,<lb />Tuesdays, 7-8 P.M.) ummm<lb /><lb />MEDCATIONS.<lb /><lb />TO APPLY FOR AID OR TO FIND OUT MORE, CALL THE<lb />MARGARET BLACKMON AT 355-5726 BETWEEN 104M<lb />2PM WEEKDAYS. po<lb /><lb />hat oe It Ts never too early to start makin A i a<lb />fp, plans for your next family reunion. |<lb /><lb />| he<lb />a<lb /><lb />e<lb /><lb />Come experience all the fun and ,<lb /><lb />| Open Monda<lb /><lb /> o= SAAD RENTALS<lb />1-, 2-, and 3- bedroom housing units<lb />REAL ESTATE<lb /><lb />' 907 Dickinson Ave., Greenville, NC, (252) 757-3191, Accepted<lb /><lb />a "-_ Bee LE) 7 @ ai _ inviting accommodations that |<lb />- : . <p>|<lb /><lb />reotines in the name of the Lord<lb />Jesus Christ: =<lb /><lb /> The Work declares in<lb />II Timothy 3:12 - 13 oYea, and all<lb />that will live godly in Christ Jesus<lb /><lb />_ Shall suffer persecution. But evil<lb />men and seducers shall wax worse<lb />and worse, deceiving, and being<lb />deceived. ?<lb /><lb />We live in a time today, in<lb /><lb />which we must know who we are<lb />in Christ Jesus. Another transla-<lb />tion states oEveryone who wants<lb />to live. as God desires, in Christ<lb />Jesus, will be hurt. But people<lb />who are evil and cheat others will<lb />go from bad to. worse. They will<lb />fool others but they will also be<lb />fooling themselves. Can you imag-<lb />ine evil men getting anymore evil<lb />than they already are and seducers<lb />getting worse that what they<lb />already are? But the Word said it<lb />would be and the Word is the<lb />absolute. The persecution is not<lb /><lb />going to come so much from»<lb /><lb />_ withcut but from within. A man Ts<lb /><lb />enemies are the men of his own<lb />house (Micah 7:6).<lb /><lb />We can learn from Jesus. 1 know<lb />of no man that suffered so great a<lb />persecution as He did, but He<lb />stood His ground. What people<lb />thought or said about Him did not<lb /><lb />Shake him. He came to do the will<lb />of His Father and that He did.<lb />A majority of Jesus T persecution<lb />. did not come from the sinners but<lb />from obelievers ?. The sinners re-<lb />ceived Him more readily than the<lb />believers. The sinners were the<lb />ones receiving salvation, miracles<lb />and deliverance. He met their<lb />needs because they believed and<lb />received Him. They believed the<lb />Word. When Jesus stood within<lb />the synagogue and read from the<lb />Old Testament scroll according to<lb />Isaiah; the spirit of the Lord is<lb />upon me, He listed purposes of the<lb />spirit Ts ascension upon Him. First<lb />of all , it was to anoint Him to go<lb />about His ministry unto the Father,<lb />to preach the gospel to the poor, to<lb />heal the broken-hearted, to preach<lb />deliverance to the captives and<lb /><lb />back in the right direction. Be<lb /><lb />careful that you are not deceived.<lb /><lb />Beware of wolves in sheep cloth-<lb />ing. Ask the Lord to anoint your<lb />eyes and discernment. It is yours<lb />for the asking. Ask and it shall be<lb />given. Seek and ye shall find.<lb />There are no big oI Ts ? and little<lb /> oyou's ?,<lb /><lb />It is important to know<lb />who your are in Christ and where<lb />you stand with Him. This is a<lb />know-so-thing. Regardless of what<lb />people think about you, regardless<lb />of the way they feel about you,<lb />regardless of the way they treat<lb />you, you must know for yourself!<lb />You must know who you are in<lb />Christ and you cannot be shaky<lb />about it! You must know your<lb />rights! You must know your<lb />authority and exercise it! You<lb />must know where you stand with<lb />Christ! I cannot stress to you the<lb />importance of this! You have got<lb />to know! Proving time is at hand!<lb />There are people in the church that<lb />the devil has raised up to try to<lb />block your progress (note I said<lb />try) if you let them. The devil can<lb />do no more than YOU allow him<lb />to do. oChurch ? people that try to<lb />hinder and hurt you oIN THE<lb />NAME OF THE LORD ? are not<lb />of God but of their father the devil.<lb />They are wolves in sheep clothing<lb />and venomous snakes.<lb /><lb />Jude verse 17 says these<lb />people complain and blame others,<lb />doing the evil things they want to<lb />do. They brag about themselves<lb />and they flatter others to get what<lb />they want (New Century Version).<lb /><lb />The Lord said in prophecy<lb />to the church that we are going to<lb />know who He the churches, which<lb />He has already begun to do. We<lb />may not understand why God<lb />moves the way He does but He<lb />said His thoughts are not our<lb />thoughts, neither our ways His<lb />ways.<lb /><lb />" Toften think about Jesus T ministry<lb /><lb />here on earth. He was awesome!<lb />He was able to meet every<lb />circumstance and situation with<lb /><lb />He did it; where deliverance was<lb />needed, it was done; when He had<lb />to be hard, He was able to do that<lb />too. When the time came for Him<lb />to give His life for the sins of the<lb />world, He willingly and obedi-<lb />y.<lb />surrendered Himself to be nailed<lb />alive to a tree. He wasn't a<lb />weaking but He demonstrated the |<lb />power of an Almighty God. He.<lb />was a man in a class by Himself.<lb />Jesus knew how to minister in.<lb />every given situation. When the<lb />devil roared in His face, the Holy<lb />Spirit rose up greater in Jesus. The<lb />devil never got the upper hand.<lb />Jesus was always victorious. He<lb />was always thhe conqueror. We<lb />have the same power/authority<lb />that Jesus had while here on earth.<lb />He lives on the inside of each of<lb />us that has of our sins.<lb />He said greater works than these<lb />shall we do.<lb />God was pleased with Jesus<lb />because He obeyed Him. If we<lb />want to please God, we must obey<lb />Him. Obedience is better than<lb />sacrifice and to hearken than the<lb />fat of rams.<lb />In conclusion, I say unto you<lb />beware of evil men and seducing<lb />spirits. When you see that some-<lb />thing or someone is hindering your<lb />spiritual-growth and process, you<lb />should do just like J did in<lb />the case of Potiphar's wife, run for<lb />your very life! Run just as fast and<lb />as hard as you possibly can in the<lb />other direction because your very<lb />life is at stake.
